---------------------------------
Of all the resources on Teachers.Net, the Teachers.Net Chatboard stands alone. It has started hundreds of thousands of discussions, has given voice to a million teachers, and has delivered hundreds of millions of thought provoking webpages to teachers over the years. This issue of "Tips" gives you the secrets to the Teachers.Net Chatboard system.
Since Teachers.Net was founded in 1996, one resource dominated
the entire website. The Teachers.Net Chatboard was first resource
we unveiled, and has never stopped being our most popular and active
teacher tool on the entire website.
Originally, there was only on teacher chatboard, which covered the entire
range of teacher topics. But as Teachers.Net grew, we found that
the script we programmed for the first Teacher Chatboard, would serve
just as well for dozens of other specialty purposes. Over the
years, this single chatboard script was improved time and again until it
delivered discussion forums for over 150 different teacher
topics.
Monitoring the Teacher Chatboards
With all these chatboards steaming along in in parallel, it's
difficult to stay on top of all of the great content that streams through
this chatboard network. Fortunately, we've provided you some tools
to monitor the latest, and never miss items of particular interest to
you.
The Chat Center - Echo Chamber for the Chatboards
As mentioned in the
June
16 tip, the
Teachers.Net
Chat Center is the crossroads
of Teachers.Net. This webpage lists not only links to all the
chatboards down the left hand side, it also list all of the latest posts
that have appeared in each of the chatboard groups that we've
assembled.
The Mentor Center - Listing of All Chatboards
To review the entire list of teacher chatboards, visit the
Teachers.Net Mentor Center
(
http://teachers/net/mentors/). This webpage assembles in a easy
to navigate web all of the various teacher chatboard "channels"
we've developed for our teachers over the year.
Project Center Chatboards
In addition to the Mentor Center and the Chat Center, teachers should
also take note that the Project
Center also utilizes our familiar chatboard program, to connect
teachers around the world, who are developing classroom or campus
projects
Classified Ads
We've also adapted our chatboard system to serve as a one-way message
posting system for teachers who are seeking to broadcast a product or
service of interest to teachers. The Teachers.Net
Classified Ads include
over one dozen categories of classifieds of interest to teachers.
There's no cost to post your ad, and of course, no cost to read the
massive amount of ads.
Tips for the Chatboard...
Here are a few tips for getting the most out of the Teachers.Net
Chatboards:
The Latest Posts
The chatboard includes a listing of both the latest posts, and all
listings. To see the latest collection of posts, look for the tab
just above the board title for "latest posts." Scanning
this list will always reveal the latest additions to the chatboard.
just below this list is a second link to "next latest posts,"
which will reveal the next oldest posts added.
All Posts on the Chatboard
To reveal all the posts on the chatboard, click on the "All
Posts" tab, also above the board title in the top center. This
tab returns a list of all discussions sorted by order of date thread
added. You can quickly scan entire threads the length of the
chatboard with this tool.
Tip: New Window Nav
One of my favorite tricks for quick navigating of the chatboards,
involves the browser trick of opening a new window or tab with threads I
want to explore. As I scan the latest posts, or the full list, and
I spot a thread I want to see, I either hold control down and click the
link, or I right-click on the link to the post, and select "open in
new tab" (or window). This trick will pull up a separate tab
with the new post in it, and you ca quickly scan and click through the
entire thread without losing your place on the main chatboard. When
you're finished, just close the tab or the extra window, and the original
window appears below!
Sometimes you may be the first to discover a post that is
inappropriate for one reason or another. If this happens, there is
a red link in the left side at the top, labeled "Report
Abuse." Click this link and a short form pops up.
Filling in this form is a snap, you can put as little information in
there the reason the post should be removed is not obvious, you can fill
in a brief note in the form, and we'll quickly sort it out.
Print and Share
Printing any page is as simple as clicking the word
"Print," which appears in the top left of every page. If
you haven't discovered the "Share" feature (as listed in detail
on June 12) we
encourage you to check it out. This tool allows you to save
personal bookmarks online of your favorite webpages on Teachers.Net, and
lets you email any webpage link to yourself or a friend, and share a
webpage or resource on your Facebook, MySpace, or other popular social
networking websites.
Chatboard-to-Mailring Digests
Every chatboard on Teachers.Net has a corresponding mailring.
The Chatboards are each set up to stream new posts from the chatboard
directly to the corresponding mailring. To catch to all the latest
discussions on your favorite chatboards, be sure to join the partner
mailring.
More To Come..!
