Kathleen - OK, eraser, you're on! Thank you for agreeing to do this session for Teachers.Net educators!
¤êrã§êr¤ - hey Folks!!!
¤êrã§êr¤ - I am hosting the chat for tonight
¤êrã§êr¤ - have you heard of "firstsearch"
Maestra - No, I haven't either heard of firstsearch
Sadie - What type of info is on firstsearch
¤êrã§êr¤ - firstsearch..is a data base..for journal articles..a useful link for those in a masters program
¤êrã§êr¤
¤êrã§êr¤ - many data bases are accessible via a code # or password from a linked college or library system
Halie - What is a first search. Any url?
sue - eraser, what I need help with is narrowing my serach terms, never seem to get them right
al-IA - Sue, you need to read the how to's for each engine you use. Each one is different
¤êrã§êr¤ - sue..in general searches...like yahoo..webcrawler..etc quote marks help alot
al-IA - some use quotes, others and , or,
¤êrã§êr¤ - http://aj.com = ask Jeeves...he is user friendly too...but watch out for the frames while trying to bookmark
¤êrã§êr¤ - Kathleen recommended this chat as i have access to data bases for journal articles...via library systems
¤êrã§êr¤ - YOU can have access too via library card numbers....or college ID from the libraries
sue - would like to serach for articles for parent meetings
¤êrã§êr¤ - http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itweb/cavespr see this link and see that a password is required...get it from school
sue - eraser, will all schools have a password?
¤êrã§êr¤ - Sue..schools that are on-line will have passwords
Kathleen - eraser, introduce us to how to get into online libraries
¤êrã§êr¤ - online libraries @ http://sjcpl.lib.in.us/homepage/PublicLibraries/PubLibSrvsGpherWWW.html#wwwsrv
Halie - Is it applicable to colleges in the US only, for the card or ID?
Mary K&1 - Do you have to pay to get access?
Kathleen - eraser, do we sign up for a virtual library card at that site?
¤êrã§êr¤ - ask a reference librarian for help...it is all coordinated locally
sue - eraser, public or university libraries?
¤êrã§êr¤ - its not a virtual card # for me @ the buffalo library..I use MY REAL card # its easy if you find out about it
¤êrã§êr¤ - Sue...BOTH!
Kathleen - eraser, is there ever a charge for accessing the libraries?
¤êrã§êr¤ - "first search" and "info trac" are systems purchased by libraries....for the use by patrons like YOU
Kathleen - eraser, and what do you have access to via these online libraries? Is there a central data base somewhere, different from ERIC?
¤êrã§êr¤ - these "systems" are free..often hosted by colleges for the use of students REGISTERED at the college...or those with an active card @ local library
Joan/1/NY - where are you located eraser, what city or state, I mean
¤êrã§êr¤ - any reference librarian will walk you through the steps...I just happen to live with one
¤êrã§êr¤ - I am in buffalo and go to http://www.nioga.org
PJ - what does having these "systems" do for us?
Mary K&1 - What kind of info can you find in this way?
¤êrã§êr¤ - it means you can get information from journal articles...without going to the library
¤êrã§êr¤ - well if you are in a masters program..it means you can do homework in your underwear!!
Paula - any suggestions for sites re: distance learning at the elementary level?
Joan/1/NY - Wow thanks, I'm in Buffalo too! Just bookmarked it
Mary K&1 - We have Grolier's and UMI in our district - it costs big bucks - but it's really great
¤êrã§êr¤ - I am talking about scholarly stuff for school
Mary K&1 - Is there a wide selection of journals?
¤êrã§êr¤ - web searches are a different cookie all together
Paula - exactly - i'm workingin a masters program on the topic - my project is to do something with it at the level i teach - which is third grade.
¤êrã§êr¤ - Paula..call your College library...and find out about the online data bases
¤êrã§êr¤ - its really simple...ya just gotta ask
Kathleen - eraser, are you able to order print copies of journals you access online?
¤êrã§êr¤ - many high schools are on line for the infro-trac data base
¤êrã§êr¤ - Kathleen...yes I have...but it is tricky at first...I am lucky with the librarian roomate
Kathleen - eraser, have you completed any coursework using only online references?
¤êrã§êr¤ - although I can't give out my passwords...you all have passwords via local libraries that are online
¤êrã§êr¤ - Kathleen...yes!!!
Joan/1/NY - Would I be able to get a password by going on line with them, or do I have to go into the library?
¤êrã§êr¤ - these data bases help me write papers and reference sources too
Kathleen - For those who don't know about the AskERIC feature, go to http://ericir.sunsite.syr.edu/. You can submit questions and real people will return info within a week
¤êrã§êr¤ - Joan...a call will do ...I am sure...to the reference dept.
Kathleen - Amy, welcome to eraser's discussion about accessing education related information online via libraries, etc
¤êrã§êr¤ - Kathleen ...good source...but I am talking about teacher journals
Kathleen - Learn about the entire ERIC system (wonderful resource!) at http://www.accesseric.org:81/home.html
Mary K&1 - How local do you mean by local? I'm in a very rural area, our local libraries are lucky to have a building and some books, they don't have this kind a capability. Can we obtain access privleges through a larger system in the closest city?
Kathleen - eraser, I understand that the libraries offer journals. ERIC is helpful for quick references, digest articles
¤êrã§êr¤ - I am only stressing 1 point - and that is that there is so available if you call your library...or college library and seek the help of the reference dept.
¤êrã§êr¤ - they give all the passwords and login names...some as simple as "welcome"
Kathleen - Good question, Mary, our little library smells musty,no computer in there! And you have to walk AROUND the librarian's dog who doesn't like kids (growls at them)
¤êrã§êr¤ - Mary..in that case..go throught the next link @ county wide system
Kathleen - eraser, what does a new user ask for when s/he enters the big county or university library looking to get started?
¤êrã§êr¤ - my branch library has SQUAT..but the county link gives it all up!
Kathleen - eraser, can people sign up and receive passwords over the telephone? the Internet?
¤êrã§êr¤ - Kathleen ..it is worth a personal visit then...ask Q's and take notes...the rest is a walk in the park
¤êrã§êr¤ - often over the phone....I did that via a college library
¤êrã§êr¤ - my local links to all colleges give you directions to the how's and all that...just ASK
Kathleen - eraser, before the session began, you were offering sites and pointers about some searches I'm not familiar with. Would you post them here now?
AMY - Can someone help me out--i'm having trouble following this conversation
¤êrã§êr¤ - oh yes... http://aj.com is ask jeeves and he can be tricky because of frames...if your "go" key is a winner hit the "no frames" AND BOOKMARK the site...use the back button then to return to the querie session
Kathleen - Amy, new messages appear at the top of the screen.
¤êrã§êr¤ - okay AMY ask your Q
AMY - okay--but i'm trying to determine what exactly your discussing
Kathleen - We're talking about accessing education journals online
¤êrã§êr¤ - amy...data bases...like from college or the library - only without being there
¤êrã§êr¤ - take a second and see this http://www.searchbank.com/searchbank/cavespr but you have to find out how via locally
Kathleen - so, eraser, you access an Internet site with your password, and then you see listings of all of the journals available? or is each journal on a separate site?
AMY - oh--so other than ERIC what else exists? i think you were just mentioning some sites.
¤êrã§êr¤ - I access a data base via password and do a search internally...subject/author..like that
AMY - erasure--i just tried the searchbank site--i need a library card # where would i get one?
Kathleen - Amy, eraser's library card allows her access to a lot of ed related references on the Internet
¤êrã§êr¤ - AMY!! excellent work!!...now get a library card number from your library...its like checking out a book...its a servise!
¤êrã§êr¤ - service...sorry
Joan/1/NY - I was doing research on phonemic awareness activities for a challenge grant then I could have used this?
AMY - but how do i get a library card # from my library? who do i ask?
¤êrã§êr¤ - ya know how you gotta check-out books with a card - and the card has a number - well the same # is good on-line! Isn't this grand?
¤êrã§êr¤ - Joan..yes you are right..I did loads of art therapy research on-line
Joan/1/NY - Yes, I think it IS grand!
AMY - really? that is all there is to it? i just use the library card number from my library card?
¤êrã§êr¤ - they are BOL = books on-line
Joan/1/NY - And I thank you for sharing the infor!! Thanks eraser
¤êrã§êr¤ - and journal articles too...ask the reference dept.
¤êrã§êr¤ - whew!!! am I tired! it's really easy once you ask...the librarians will help where ever you are
¤êrã§êr¤ - many colleges offer choices from data bases...like from "are you in a lab on campus" or from home...it's all set up differently
¤êrã§êr¤ - this link offers a taste of some libraries that are on-line http://sjcpl.lib.in.us/homepage/PublicLibraries/PubLibSrvsGpherWWW.html#wwwsrv
Kathleen - wow, that last link takes one to a long list of libraries online! thanks!
Joan/1/NY - I just pulled up the NYC Library
Joan/1/NY - fascinating
Beth - Hi - did I miss something? Tried the Infotrac site w/ local library card # & didn't access it?
¤êrã§êr¤ - anyway...it is really easy and folks are there to help - just ask
AMY - was looking at this interesting site a professor of mine recommended--don't know if it relates but thought i'd let you guys know anyway--http://www.mts.net/~jgreenco/jerdeb.html
Kathleen - Beth, I'll bet your card has to be issued with that purpose in mind. eraser, what do you think about Beth's problem?
¤êrã§êr¤ - Beth, that info trac system is via another school - your local system has probable purchased access via your card # via a designated link...not the one I posted
Kathleen - Amy, "student research sites" looks interesting. Thanks for the info :-)
Beth - Thanks - this info tonight has been a big help
¤êrã§êr¤ - Amy - great link....thanks
Kathleen - so, each of us needs to go to our nearest university or other large library and walk up to the desk and say, "Please tell me how to gain access to online libraries with a card and number from this library."
¤êrã§êr¤ - but accessing data bases is done locally...via the network of passwords and # distributed for the system
Joan/1/NY - I'd like to thank you eraser!
¤êrã§êr¤ - Kathleen...thats are there is to it...just ask for help
Kathleen - In any case, I have to leave now, but want to thank eraser for opening another wonderful information highway to us!
Kathleen - continue chatting about tapping the resources of the Internet in general if you wish. Good night and thanks again, eraser and all participants!
Mary K&1 - Thanks ¤êrã§êr¤ I've learned a lot :o)
Joan/1/NY - Goodnight Kathleen, thanks to you too
¤êrã§êr¤ - my pleasure Mary
Joan/1/NY - Goodnight all!
¤êrã§êr¤ - Kitty were you here for the chat session?
¤êrã§êr¤ - 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1....last chance folks...i got a pizza waiting for me
