trese - 4 blocks literacy chat
sioux - I think it officially begins at 9:00 PM EST
sioux - so what do you teach and where are you in your Four Blocks implementation?
sioux - I am an elementary school principal trying to support my teachers in the implementation of Four Blocks.
Me - I always get on late. This is different! So I will start with a question. To day was my second day of school and I did all 4 blocks. Sort of. Is that too soon?
sioux - I don't think it is too soon. I am proud of your for jumping in and trying it. What went well?
Me - I teach 2nd grade. This is my erd year but last year was very difficult and I didn't do a very good job of it.
sioux - So - what went well today?
sioux - What book did you read aloud during SSR?
Me - Actually, I thought everything went fairly well. I think I have a lot of good students and they just do whatever I ask of them.
sioux - I am glad everything went smoothly.
sioux - Hi kryn
Me - I read Curious George goes to school and then I intoduced the book baskets and most of the students read but some just looked at pictures.
sioux - You may want to consider reading "First Day Jitters" - it is funny and second graders would get a kick out of it!
Me - How do you get them to read at their own level. Should I resort to what I have done other years and give them individual bags?
sioux - So kryn - what do you teach?
kryn - I think I am in the wrong chat space. I teach at the college level - need to "chat" for a class for clear credential.
kryn - I have taught middle and high school. Will look for chat in that area. Thanks.
Colleen - Hello
KimT - Hi everyone
Karen - Hi all! This is my first chat room experience. HOw do we start?
KimT - I am brand new to four blocks. I teach 5th grade.
sioux - Sioux got a phone call and is away from the computer - her husband
Karen - Kim, are you using four blocks?
KimT - Hi Karen... yes, we just started school Tues. and today I taught my first Writing block
Karen - How did it go?
KimT - It went beautifully well!
cw - hello all
Karen - Great! I'm going to have more questions than anything, because I'm not teaching yet. I've been at home with my kids but plan to start in the next year or two.
KimT - I modeled writing a letter to my students telling them about me... then asked them to do the same... it gave me a great chance to see what they already know about writing... tomorrow we will continue working on these letters and I'm hoping to get the finished ones from them Friday
KimT - I'm just starting 4 blocks for the first time, so I have lots of questions too.
cw - any suggestions on spelling practice without giving up time in my blocks?
mcr - Hello everyone!
KimT - hi cw!
Colleen - This is my first time in a chat room. Am I doing this correctly or is there no one sending messages?
Sparrow - Our kids come back tomorrow . I'm Sp. Ed. co- teaaching in seacond grade . NOt yet familar with 4 block
KimT - hi mcr!
zoey - hi
KimT - Colleen, I'm getting your messages. Hit update and then keep scrolling through the messages, I guess
mcr - Hi Kim. I started last year but still have lots of questions!
cw - i have been doing the blocks for 4 years and love it!
KimT - mcr what grade? I'm 5th
Colleen - thanks for your answer
Sparrow - cw can you please tell me a little about it?
KimT - cw... great!!! What grade?
Karen - Have you guys had plenty of support from principals, etc?
mcr - I tried (I'm 2nd grade) having the kids draw a picture today and then whisper their complete sentence. Didn't get to everyone. Should I continue this tomorrow?
mcr - I have fantastic support, thank goodness.
cw - there are 4 blocks in the framework, a guided reading block, a writing block, a self selected reading block and then a working w/ words block, they are taught everyday but not necessarily back to back
cw - i teach 1st
zoey - hi this is my first year teaching full-time in grade 2
zoey - hi this is my first year teaching full-time in grade 2
zoey - sorry..never used this chat before
KimT - My principal is new to the school this year. She seems to be just taking it all in, seeing if what we do works, and then I guess next year I'll know whether I have her support or not. I know that sounds weird. And this is my first year to try 4blocks
Me - I teach 2nd and I modeled writing about myself and then let them write for about 7 minutes and then draw a picture to go with the writing. The kids did great- mostly.. This writing will be my baseline for the year.
mcr - cw, can I continue tomorrow with sharing since I didn't get to it today? I hate running out of time.
cw - sparrow, it's a great way to organize your language arts instruction where you adrress all levels of liyeracy in your room without ability grouping
cw - you don't have to have everyone share on the same day, so you can leave some for tomorrow
zoey - I teach second as well
Me - MCR, I think I would continue since some will feel left out if you don't.
Karen - Sparrow, you're going to love four blocks. Discovering it really made me want to teach! There is nothing exactly new about it, but it pulls together many proven teaching methods in a way teachers can use imediately. At least, that's what I've read. I'm here to listen to "real" teachers.
KimT - Me - that sounds good, a lot like what I did except different grade level
mcr - Thanks cw and Me.
mcr - Wish I could stay longer but I gotta run. See ya.
KimT - I'm soooo uncertain about guided reading. I hadn't planned to start that block until next week since it is all so new. Any advice for upper grades??
Sparrow - Our school uses direct instruction for phonics - does it fit into the plan?
zoey - feeling a little overwhelmed
Me - Zoey, what have you done so far?
Colleen - I am a 1st gr teacher. This is my first year trying to implement 4blocks. We have new basals to use and lots of small books as extras.
zoey - Making words...word wall
cw - Kim get the book! there isn't anything that i have tried that didn't work ve tried that
zoey - self selected reading
Me - That's a good start. How are the kids liking it?
zoey - they like it
Jennifer - KimT, start with RT or a poem or very short section of text from social or science...it helps you get the feel of what you're doing.
zoey - just find I am overwhelmed with planning
cw - sorry everyone, i can't type!
zoey - struggling with the guided reading part
Me - Zoey, isn't it fun to teach this way. I really worried about the Guided Reading block but once I got into it I found I really had many more materials than I need.
zoey - no big books
Karen - I think I'm getting booted. By, everyone!
KimT - cw- thanks for the advice, I have the upper grades modifiying book, the guided reading book, and phonics for upper grades. i guess what I'm worried about is I have a LARGE number of gifted students (10 out of 20!!!)..... keeping them challended...?
cw - i started very slowly with my planning, only focusing on one block at a time, i read all that was written about that block and gave myself permission to go slow, i feel like that as the key to implementing the components correctly and not being overwhelmed
Me - You don't have to have big books but they are really great. Do you have multiple copies of anything?
Jennifer - I found WWW difficult last year because of the huge spread in ability, KimT
zoey - what do you think about taking stories from other reading programs, putting them on chart paper and using them as part of guided reading
KimT - Jennifer... good idea!!! We have a new Science text that would be good to work from... the kids really like science more so than social studies!
cw - i also gave myslef permission to use our basal for the gradelevel days, i didn't worry about trying to find material for those days when i had leveled stories right there and enough for my whole class
zoey - I have multiple copies of the stories for paired reading
KimT - Jennifer... I considered that problem (WWW)... I may end up focusing more on goals 3,4,5 if I find that my students are proficient enough with the high frequency words... what do you think?
zoey - worried about what level to start at
Alta Rose / 2 - Zoey, what grade level?
zoey - 2
cw - it's also goog to order scholastic news, one grade level BELOW yours snd use those for you fluency days, laminate the one that match your ss and science objectives and save them for next year, i did that for three years and have quite a collection
Me - I have never resorted to that but I think it would work. Lots of work though. I use my basal for lots of my GR block but I also use poetry that I run off (for the easy days), Scholastic News, Science books, social books and multiple copies that my school ordered with the reading sries or I got free with book orders.
Jennifer - KimT, also goal 6 in Modifying 4Blocks for the upper grades
Alta Rose / 2 - Same here. Do you have some Gr. 2 basals you can start with, to get the feel of where they're at?
Kevin - Hi everyone...what's the topic about?
Alta Rose / 2 - Hi Kevin--4Blocks Literacy.
zoey - well I have an old journeys collection
Kevin - Can I use 4Blocks in the 5th grade?
zoey - my class was totally empty of resources when I walked in
Me - Alta Rose, I would love to but my basals are really hard for 2nd. According to Accelerated Reader most of the stories are 3rd grade level. I do lots of support.
KimT - Jennifer... I forgot about goal 6. I've been reading a lot from the upper grades phonics book.
zoey - so would you suggest that poetry would be the best way to start
Kevin - I guess not?
Alta Rose / 2 - Yes, Kevin. Nan has a site for 4Blocks for upper grades, and Cheryl Sigmon's column talks about that, as well.
Me - Last year I had a low ability, difficult class and I started with Nursey rhymes.
KimT - a question about GR... how will i keep my gifted readers challenged? I'mnot ready to do book clubs this early in the year
zoey - I have a pretty good group
Jennifer - Does anyone know if Magic School Bus books come in big book format? (In particular, the waterworks book.)
Kevin - What is 4Blocks anyway?....in 10 words or less...
Alta Rose / 2 - Yes, poetry would be a good start. Is your Journeys collection good? How old? Sometimes, if it's older, the stories are still fine.
KimT - Kevin... I'm 5th too and JUST starting 4 blocks for the first time!
zoey - at least 12 out of 23 reading at a 2 level at the end of grade 1
Me - Kim, keep in mind that GR is teaching the strategies, regardless of the level. They will read at their own level during SSR
Jennifer - Kevin...balanced literacy
Alta Rose / 2 - Yes, Jennifer, I got a big book of MSB from Scholastic a few years ago.
zoey - yes I think some are good stories
Me - Jennifer, I have one Magic School bus in big books form so they must. Try Scholastic
sioux - 4blocks is working with words, writing, guided reading, and sustained silent reading every day for about 2 to 2.5 hours
Alta Rose / 2 - Kim, Brad made a really good post that talks about that on the chatboard. He explained it very well. I dont' know if it's still there, though.
Jennifer - Thank you, AltaRose...I am totally clueless about primary and in complete shellshock after starting grade two yesterday!!!!!!1
Kevin - I will have to look up more info on 4Blocks...I like the way I've been teaching lauguage arts so far.
zoey - me to Jennifer
KimT - Me.. good point
Alta Rose / 2 - I'd start with your journey basal then, zoey. At least you will have multiple copies. I'm using my basal.
Alta Rose / 2 - I'd start with your journey basal then, zoey. At least you will have multiple copies. I'm using my basal.
KimT - My kids so far LOVE SSR
zoey - good...was getting stressed over what to do
Alta Rose / 2 - brb
Sparrow - Can anyone sugguest a web sight for good info on 4 block - not just sales of mat'l
zoey - I just don't have enough for everyone in the class
sioux - what are some good books you have read aloud during SSR for the beginning of school?
Kevin - I guess I kind of do 4Blocks...I may even be doing 5Blocks.
zoey - enough for paired reading
KimT - Alta... did brad post that recently? I'll look for it
Me - Sparrow and anyone else, if you want great help join the 4 Blocks mailring. I don't know what I's do without it.
KimT - sioux... we just started school Tues. I read "Thank you Mr. Falker" yesterday and today.
sioux - many people believe that 5 blocks is more the way to go, kevin.
zoey - how do you do that
Me - Kevin, what's the 5th block?
Sparrow - me, is the mailring through teaaachers.net?
sioux - Kim - that is a GREAT book! I use it for open house and read it to parents.
Jennifer - Also, for more information, check out the 4 block Chatboard and the articles (about 80) written by Cheryl Sigmon (at www.teachers.net
Alta Rose / 2 - Sparrow, there are lots! I will post them on the 4Blocks chatboard for you.
jsinc - hello everyone
Kevin - I read to my class every day...they have SSR, they read aloud and pair read....I don't know what 5Blocks are?
Alta Rose / 2 - Do you have enough books for the kids to share, zoey?
Me - Yes, the mailring is through Teacher, net. But get a separate account for your mail. Lots of wonderful ideas, websites, etc.
Alta Rose / 2 - Fairly recently, Kim. I'll go see if it;'s still there. brb
zoey - yes
jsinc - this is my 2nd year using 4blocks
Me - Zoey, I sometimes use 4 or 5 books for my entire class of 19. They can and like to read together in groups.
Kevin - What am I missing?
sioux - how is it going jsinc?
KimT - My husband set up a separate folder in my inbox that all 4blocks mailring mail goes to. Makes it easier to sort through what's 4blocks and what's personal
zoey - not sure how to go from the guided reading to the groups
jsinc - fairly well, I really like the program
Jennifer - Kevin: Writing Block, Working with Words, Guided Reading and SSR are the four blocks
Karen - Hey, someone answer! WHat is the "5th block?"
sioux - writing - both shared/ modeled and indiependent as well as writing conferences? but you probably do that Kivin.
jsinc - the only problem I have is finding time for all of the conferences
Alta Rose / 2 - Yes, it's there, Kim. It's under 4Block Testimonials.
Me - Kim, I had to do that too. Or consider moving out. It 's a lot of mail.
lisa/3/nc - there is no 5th block
REI/2/IL - There is no "5th Block".
Kevin - Guided reading with the teacher?
Jennifer - Karen, some people have problems dropping small group guided reading and continue that as well.
KimT - Alta...thanks so much! I am going to find it. Then it's bedtime.. Thanks everyone, good luck and have a great year!
Karen - Thanks!
zoey - yes
Alta Rose / 2 - http://personal.bellsouth.net/lig/n/a/naneb/index.html Here is nan's site for upper grade 4 Blocks.
Kevin - I made up the 5th Block...maybe this is the start of something wonderful...
sioux - the fifth block takes guided reading and really splits it into two blocks - a block where kids work on their instructional level every day and a second time where kids work on grade level reaading every day
jsinc - does anyone really do all of the conferences required or suggested?
lisa/3/nc - actually if people would just trust that Four Blocks works...and that you can still do some small group work during Guided Reading
lisa/3/nc - Sioux...that's SSR and GR
Karen - Funny! And I thought this was breaking news!
Kevin - Are there set rules for 4Blocks?
lisa/3/nc - Jsinc...you have to do what works for you
KimT - Alta... I've been to Nan's site! IT's awesome! Thanks for your help. (You can tell I've been doing a lot of reading on the chatboard and mailring this summer! i'm psyched about 4blocks!) Bye!
Alta Rose / 2 - Not "rules" per sae, it's a framework.
Me - Their are no 4 Blocks police.
Kevin - Breaking News....There are now 6Blocks!!
sioux - you can look at it that way - however, there is no direct instruction during SSR - more conferencing and a small amount of modeling
Alta Rose / 2 - Night, Kim.
lisa/3/nc - Kevin...there are procedures...but in essence, you do what you need to do...what works for you
sioux - "rules" - no, but guidelines
Sparrow - what is all the "conferencing " about?
Kevin - Ok...I a 4Block guy now
jsinc - I hope to do more conferencing this year, but it was all i could to to keep alive
Kevin - Bye Rose
sioux - congrats, kevin - actually you can call yourself a "blockhead"
Alta Rose / 2 - I'm going to sign off now to spend some time with the family. I will pop back after the kids are in bed, if you're all still here. Take Care.
Kevin - Thanks
jsinc - we have a supplemental reading program we have to teach in addition to the 4Blocks program
sioux - jsinc- what is the program, and how do you have time for it?
sioux - hi emma!
jsinc - it was put in place by my district. It is for students that are still developing on our state reading inventory. I teach it during SSR to about 7 kids
jsinc - it's called RAP
Kevin - SSR...Guided Reading...paired reading...reading aloud ...writing ...and what's the other
sioux - so sort of a remedial reaing group within your classroom?
jsinc - anyone here working in NEISD San antonio?
jsinc - yes
Me - Working with Words
jsinc - 30 min 3x a week
sioux - Kevin - the four blocks are officially referred to as 1) working with words 2) guided reading 3) writing and 4) SSR
jsinc - it's a great remedial program, there is just so little time
Kevin - working with words how...Me...Am I talking to myself?
sioux - kevin - do you want to know what working with words is?
Me - Yes Kevin, youare talking to Me. Are you confused yet?
Kevin - Next time my name will be You.
Kevin - Yes sioux
sioux - how about who as in who is on first?
Me - I love it! We will have fun talking!
jsinc - kevin-I have a really cool power point presentation for working w/ words, I could email it to you
Karen - (laughter from the the audience)
Kevin - What a team!!!
jsinc - It's a guess the covered word game
Kevin - Ok jsinc
sioux - jsinc - would you email it to me????
Me - And me?
sioux - or Me? ha ha
Kevin - I no longer feel special
jsinc - sure! its at school on the intranet, so it would be tomorrow
sioux - jsinc - will you give me your email address and I will email you?
Kevin - Me?
jsinc - anyone that wants it email me at jsinc121@neisd.net and I'll send it out on Thursday
jsinc - It is set up for meet the teacher
sioux - thanks!!!!
jsinc - I used it for orientation
sioux - hi jen!
Kevin - kpi4098@aol.com
sioux - hey - it sounds as if you may be a district person or a principal?
jen - Hi, I'm looking for a lesson plan for The Legned of Sleepy Hollow for forth grade. Any Ideas?
Kevin - THIS IS GREAT.
Kevin - I'm relaxed now.
sioux - kevin - what grade do you teach and where?
Kevin - 5th grade connecticut
jen - Hi, sioux. Any ideas about the lesson plan?
Kevin - I sound like I may be a pricipal?
sioux - actually - no - but if you go to google.com and type in "lesson plans" "legend of sleepy hollow" my guess is you will get lots of results - be sure to sue the quotes
sioux - no - not you kevin - jsinc
sioux - kevin - you sound like a teacher
Kevin - Am I the only guy here?
sioux - hi j
jsinc - oh no 1st grade teacher
j - hi all
sioux - i don't know kevin - are you? - but if you are in an elementary school, you are probably used to it.
Kevin - I was going to wear a suit to work tomorrow
sioux - don't say "just" a fitst grade teachers - teachers are the backbone of everything! be proud!
Me - A suit! I am impressed!
sioux - a suit? wow! is it dress up day or something?
Kevin - I a new teacher...I know I sound experienced..
Kevin - I'm
sioux - usually fridays are dress down days every place i worked
sioux - a first year teacher??? congrats!
jsinc - jen found a site: http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?ID=256
Kevin - Tomorrow is Thursday
sioux - hi gina!
gina - Hello. Can anyone say something encouraging? I am really bummed.
j - looking for lesson plans?
Karen - sioux, jsinc, Kevin, thansk for letting me listen in. Gotta put the kids to bed... Bye!
sioux - oh - yeah - and we missed monday - so i must really be having another senior moment!!!
Kevin - I come to this room no matter what the topic...I just like learning about education
sioux - bye karen!
Me - Gina, what's up?
Kevin - Bye Karen
gina - We had a terrible staff meeting about standards, rubrics, test scores, etc.
Kevin - I have to go also...I have to teach tomorrow
sioux - Gina - you are a teacher - and teachers make a difference in many students lives -
gina - thanks, but I feel like my hands are tied by my dopey administrators.
Kevin - Profound..yet true
Me - Gina, can you do anything about those things>
gina - i'm not allowed to make any instructional decisions anymore.
Kevin - Bye everyone
sioux - gina - standards are here to stay, so you may as well make the best of it - just go in there and do the best you can every day - love the kids - continue to gro and reflect on your craft - do something fun for yourself sometimes
Me - Wow, I really feel for you. So who is making the decisions?
gina - don't know. i went down to kinder thinking i'd have a bit more freedom.
Me - Bye Kevin
sioux - try the Learning Laffs website for lots of fun jokes and things - or try The Daily Motivator to get inspired
gina - SAT9 makes the decisions in CA.
Me - Are you allowed to do 4 Blocks?
sioux - hey - i didn't know it is this late - past my bedtime - good night all!
jsinc - Jen-how do you like that site? here is anothehttp://www.educeth.ch/english/readinglist/irvingw/r:
gina - well not really. i was doing 3 blocks but for reading we have sfa.
Sparrow - it's getting late, any last thoughts about 4 block before I retire?
Colleen - Good night from me also
jsinc - NOT SFA!!!!!!!!!!!! do you teach in texas GINA?
sioux - keep on keeping on, sparrow! don't give up, blockhead!
Me - Gina, it's really the teacher that makes the difference, not the programs. You care so I bet your students are getting what they need.
gina - no. Calif. what do you think?
gina - i just feel so constrained, they constantly check up or police us.
Me - What is SFA?
sioux - success for all
jsinc - I've heard it is a bad program. The girl who teaches next to me taught it for 6 years
jsinc - it was killing her
gina - Success For All
sioux - hi marcia - where in georgia - i am from fayetteville, GA
gina - it's awful, and it's worse for the kids
Me - Is that the one that tells you what to say from a script?
gina - yep
Marcia/1st/GA - sioux, I am in Kennesaw. Not too far away
sioux - cool - marcia - are you a "blockhead"?
Me - So sorry. I'd die with that!
Marcia/1st/GA - yes, I am for the second year
gina - that's about where i am at!!!
Me - Can you go to another school?
gina - at least in K it's not as bad as the other grades.
sioux - marcia - has your school and or system begun any work on Learning Focused Schools / Max Thompson?
gina - well, i am trying to get pregnant and i don';t want to give up my really good seniority at my school.
Marcia/1st/GA - no, sioux, I have not heard of that. What county are you in?
sioux - Fayette
gina - i think if we are not made to go Open Court next year i will have to start looking around.
Me - I can understand that. I've taught many years and the best I can offer is that "this too shall pass"
gina - will it really? i have been teaching about 10 years, and it's been steadily downhill.
Marcia/1st/GA - Gina, so you want Open Court?
Marcia/1st/GA - sioux, what are Learning focused schools
gina - No way!!! but in place of sfa, at least the district would pay so we could get our budget back!!!
Me - I can't tell you how many fads I have been through. But 4 blocks will probably stay. You are right, teaching has gotten a lot harder in the last 10 years.
Marcia/1st/GA - the teacher across from me did SFA in Fla and she loved it. I don't think I would like my kids leaving my room to work with another teacher
gina - well if i were allowed to do all 4 i would be in teacher heaven!!!
sioux - Actually Learning Focused Schools is a structure for organizing your lessons/ and possibly your school. It basically takes many effective teaching practices (ie graphic organizers, rubrics, collaborative pairs, etc. and brings them all together.
Marcia/1st/GA - gina, what are you not allowed to do?
gina - trust me, Marcia. i know you are a good teacher from your posts. you will hate it!!!
Marcia/1st/GA - sioux, do you like the sounds of it?
Me - Gina, is it the Guided Reading block you can't do?
sioux - yes, i am trying to implement the stucture
Marcia/1st/GA - yeah, well I like to teach my own children. I get a bit of a panic if I think mine are going somewhere!
gina - yes. we were able to get away with 3 out of 4.
Marcia/1st/GA - gina, you are not allowed to do a whole group language arts, or read aloud to work on comprehension?
Me - Do you teach Social or science? You can do GR with those subjects also.
gina - Marcia, it is so scripted that you are down to the minute with their stuff. it is garbage.
Marcia/1st/GA - My read alouds and languag arts often sets my social studies and science themes
Marcia/1st/GA - well, no I wouldn'tlike it at all then.
gina - I guess you could try to do the reading comp. stuff for 20 min. during what is called Star.
Me - Can you use those read alounds to teach the comprehension skills?
Marcia/1st/GA - Gina, just call it something else, like Lanugage Arts, but implement some of the ideas for GR. No one will know any better will they?
gina - we don't really do SS or Sci. anymore due to our superintendent's focus on "improving" reading.
ali~PA - 4 Blocks incorporates the best practices of all the different "trends" which makes it the best of all worlds
gina - Marcia, yes, they will, because they come and police the program.
Marcia/1st/GA - Yes, I use read alouds to teach comprehension. That way I can choose some really rich literature full of great vocabulary and abstract ideas. The kids can't read that level of material, but I can read to them and discuss, do graphic organizers, work in groups, etc.
gina - You have to be doing what they say at any given moment so that they can see when they "visit" you.
Me - Gotta go. Bye all. Thanks.
Marcia/1st/GA - Gina, I would not like that at all. I have a lot of freedom where I am now.
ali~PA - gina... makes you sound like robots!
Marcia/1st/GA - where are you gina?
gina - Bye, Me. Marcia, i wish i did. I used to. Now i just feel tired of defending what I know is good for my kids.
gina - I'm in L.A. Unified, CA.
gina - sorry to be such a pessimist, but i feel it';s my duty to warn others about sfa!!!
Marcia/1st/GA - Well, I am going to have to go to bed. It's getting late on the east coast. Good luck, Gina, I hope things will be going better for you soon. And yes, many peopel on the 4 blocks mailring really dislike SFA
gina - Goodnight to you all.
