Michal - I think it's the art eacher chat - how many are here?
Jo - Yes , it's the art crew
wizzlewolf - Oh cool!!!! I am glad people are here!
wizzlewolf - OK, who had a good art day?
Michal - I did - the kids were quiet!
wizzlewolf - Hello Mary and Peak!
Jo - Great day trying to find information foil frames for an English friend
peaknut - thought I'd join
Mary/NC - hi wizzlewolf
wizzlewolf - I had a FANTASTIC day until about 3/4 of the way through. I saw my principal and was bragging on how great my classes were. Then the next class was YUCKY!!! I should have knocked on wood!
Mary/NC - <<<<<<<isn't really an art teacher, but i love arts and crafts and i teach second grade
wizzlewolf - Mary, That is great!! You must be a "shadow artist"
Michal - what are foil frames?
Artie - Hello to everyone....
peaknut - I had a good observation today
wizzlewolf - (((((((Artie)))))))!!
Mary/NC - can't wait to retire and take art classes wizzlewolf
wizzlewolf - Peak, what kind of observation?
Mary/NC - way to go peak
Mary/NC - hi artie
Jo - Frames made from heavy foil. I use to do it with copper years ago for maskes and book covers.. it seems to have come back in
Homeschlmom - Hello I teach every subject to my boys so I am always looking for new ideas
wizzlewolf - Michal, I don't know. Where did you hear about foil frames?
peaknut - classroom the usual kids were all on task at least 4 fifferent tasks
Michal - Jo just mentioned them
wizzlewolf - Oh do you mean like aluminum for tooling?
Mary/NC - what ages homeschmom?
Jo - Hurrah you have it
Michal - I like the idea of using tooling foil for book covers
Homeschlmom - 12 and 10
peaknut - lot of familiar names here, this is hard to follow
Artie - Homeschlmom, why do you home school? just wondering....
Michal - Yuck! it was 50 degrees today and it was so hard to stay inside and teach!
wizzlewolf - I just bought a retablo that looks like tin tooling around the outer frame, but it is clay sprayed with silver paint. It looks very cool. I want to try to figure out a way to use this technique in class.
Homeschlmom - God has called our family to homeschooling
Michal - Wizzlewolf - where did you buy the retablo? Sounds like a great project
Michal - Jo, you have a pond? my other addiction!
wizzlewolf - Jo, YES! It is finally getting back to being Florida! I saw some buds on my flowers.
Jo - Agree with Michal it would br fun to try
Bicyclken - I have a pond as well
wizzlewolf - Michal, I bought it on Ebay from an artist in New York. I felt bad because I got it so cheap and it is such a great piece.
Mary/NC - Way to go homeschlmom
paula - I remembered!
Jo - Since I have lost my island have to have water and fish
debio - Is anyone doing clay right now? I am almost to the end of my unit (6weeks), I have some nice things again this year!!
Michal - E-Bay? Oh, no! I spend way too much money there! *L*
Mary/NC - are most of you secondary teachers?
Artie - I am starting clay...
Bicyclken - What is everyone teaching now?
Michal - Mary, I'm K-12
wizzlewolf - I am doing clay on and off right now. Some classes are and some not.
Homeschlmom - Thank you Mary. My youngest son has a passion for drawing and he draws every spare minute he has. He is becoming quite good at it
Bicyclken - I am a secondary teacher
Jo - I done a little bit of all age groups
paula - I teach 2 thru 8 special ed
Artie - I do clay when its COLD!!!!
Michal - I'm doing clay as well
wizzlewolf - Bicyclken, I am doing TOO MANY different things. I am driving MYSELF crazy.
peaknut - I'm secondary
Bicyclken - I have got some big mosaics going on now
Jo - Love clay could have spent the whole year doing it
debio - I am elemetary and even do wheel throwing with grades 4 and 5
wizzlewolf - I have to get back on track because things are too crazy in my room. I am doing too many different media at the same time.
Michal - debio - you are really brave! *L*
Artie - I love my extruder!! Just got it last year!
Jo - Debio, good for you that age should love it
wizzlewolf - Bicyclken, do you have any photos of your mosaics?
peaknut - too many things--my disk is full and i can't find delete
Michal - artie, was it worth the money?
Bicyclken - I have that same problem, painting pastels mosaics etc.
wizzlewolf - Artie, I am jealous!! I want an extruder and a pug mill.
debio - You wouldn't believe how good they are by 6th grade, but alas they have been moved to the "middle school" -
Mary/NC - homeschlmom, have you got the book Drawing on the Right side of the Brain? i love that book
Bicyclken - I can make some in progess
peaknut - wizzle i know what you mean i let every kid chose for each project
Artie - Yes, it was worth it! (extruder)...so many things to make with the caly!
wizzlewolf - Peak, I can't even blame it on the kids. It is my own fault because I keep thinking HEY LETS DO THIS TODAY! Duh!
Jo - Ack ... you are spoiled last time I did clay kids had to mix in bathtub
Mary/NC - <<<<<lives in an area of NC that's well known for its' pottery
debio - I have a pug mill and would like to get rid of it - it is a huge mess, but I have no storage for large amounts of purchased clay
Michal - I just requistioned a new kiln. Administrators fought it, but I told them my program will die if I quit doing clay.
wizzlewolf - I love doing clay. I wish I could do it all year because the kids are so cooperative and love it so much.
Homeschlmom - writing that title down mary
Michal - Jo, what are you doing with clay in the bathtub! *L*
Artie - Clay is my main 3rd qtr. project!
wizzlewolf - Oh Deb, I wish I a pug mill. However, I don't really have the room either.
Jo - Since we are talking clay and kilns has anyone done Egyptian paste latley?
Mary/NC - Our city has a pottery festival that the local art teachers promote and the festival gives money to the public school art probram
debio - How do you elem. teachers do clay? by the assignment or a freer method?
Bicyclken - I have never taught clay I should some day
Michal - I did Egyptian Paste a few years ago, the kids really enjoyed it
Mary/NC - hope it's the right title mom.....i went to check but i have lent it out
Artie - I do assignment with letting them "add" to it...for elem.
Jo - Some how I end up with dry in bag! Came from wharehouse some where
Michal - I would NEVER let my elementary students have free choice on clay. Maybe if I had the budget to do more of it with them
wizzlewolf - Bicy, I had never done clay until about ten years ago. It was the first school with a kiln. I just taught myself. I love it now!
debio - I have egyptian paste, but haven't used it yet
wizzlewolf - Michal, do you have pics of your Egyptian Paste projects?
Mary/NC - what's egyptian paste?
Artie - Is egypt. paste a self drying? I always use white art ceramic clay..
Bicyclken - we have two full time 3-d design teachers
debio - by free choice, I have them do 3 -4 things, one must be cold or slab, one a "liviing thing" and then one with a cover, but lots of choice in the matter of subject
Jo - Debio...I bet if you have someone doing ancient history Egypt they would love you
wizzlewolf - You have to be careful with real egyptian paste because certain kinds are toxic. You shouldn't do it with little kids.
Michal - I didn't take any pics - should have. I had them do pendants. Artie - the egypt. paste is a self glazing type clay
Jo - No paste has to be fired
debio - As I recall, the paste is not that expensive either
Jo - You are right I used it only with fourth grade and up
Artie - why paste? instead of clay??
paula - yeah, I am trying to keep up with the reading.... first time I am in a room....
Jo - Lighter weight doesn't have to be glazed
Bicyclken - Anyone here going to the NAEA conference?
wizzlewolf - Egyptian paste has a very unique texture and color. It if very beautiful and looks very rare.
Michal - I don't know why it's called that. But it is more of a clay that glazes when you fire it. I found out the hard way the first time I fired it!
Artie - OK, its a self glazing clay, right? what cone do you fire it to???
Michal - I fired mine to 06
Amanda - the big conference in Min,St. Paul?
¤êrã§êr¤ - ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º° hey...I'm late?°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤
paula - where is the conference this year?
Bicyclken - yes in Minn.
wizzlewolf - Everybody, it is helpful if you put the name of the person to which you are speaking before your text (if you are speaking to a specific person). That makes it easier for people to follow the threads.
wizzlewolf - Hi Era!
wizzlewolf - I love your designs!
paula - eraser, how do you do those characters?
¤êrã§êr¤ - its an alt key code thing
wizzlewolf - How was your bubble bath eraser?
paula - ERA, on the reg. letters?
¤êrã§êr¤ - ô¿ô
Amanda - Anybody going to Missouri MAEA conference?
¤êrã§êr¤ - bath was great...candles too!
¤êrã§êr¤ - to get the symbols press alt key and a code - on the # keypad ALT 0169 = ©
paula - Deb, I am here reading...
Artie - amanda, I don't get released time very often to go to conferences...
drawntou - I need some advice. Is an Elmo machine a good substitute for either an opaque or overhead projector?
paula - Era, that is so neat..
Homeschlmom - I use to have the addy for a list on how to do all those cool designs
paula - Debs, how are you feeling?
Amanda - he,he, release time
wizzlewolf - Artie, don't feel bad. I just got back from a conference and I wished I would have stayed home!
Jo - I have often wondered why all the good conference are during the year when you are teaching!
¤êrã§êr¤ - I am looking for the address now
Bicyclken - I don't know what an ELMO machine is
wizzlewolf - Jo, EXACTLY. However, it is because the teachers putting them on want the summer off too!
peaknut - Jo, that's a good point, although during the summer it's hard to get teachers to do anything
Bicyclken - JO ,it's so more people can go and not take up your summer
drawntou - Bicyclken, an Elmo projects, and I think it replaces both types of projector. Wondered if anybody had experience
wizzlewolf - Peak, I know I don't want to do teacher stuff in the summer. I put my ARTIST hat on then.
Amanda - don't you all get professional development days?
paula - Debs, can you see my posts?
Artie - Iconferences, I figured the admins. didn't want to let the teachers go to conduct them or to go to them...during school time!
¤êrã§êr¤ - administration has $$$ put aside to send us? ...Just a thought
paula - I think we are overloading the system
Jo - Ah, yes professional development days ... strange ours were always plan for by administration!
wizzlewolf - Eraser, you are lucky. I am in Florida and our money is down the toilet. Hard times ahead!
paula - So what state is everyone from... Me, NJ
Bicyclken - Sorry, I have to go and make dinner, See ya
¤êrã§êr¤ - if your screen goes wacky - look for the resume in the upper right corner
Artie - Admins. think more about readin', writin' and math...
Amanda - they should have a professional development fund to fund conferences
wizzlewolf - Bye Bic!
peaknut - money is tight EVERYWHERE
¤êrã§êr¤ - anyone in grad school?
paula - Debs, excellent.....
Artie - the $$ is
Jo - Florida, but now retired and gone back to weaving
Artie - MY DISTRICT!!!!
peaknut - era Grad school here
wizzlewolf - Amanda, we used to have that. In fact, they would even pay for travel and registration. Not anymore.
paula - Artie, what's up with the new classroom? hi okla
Artie - the $$ is flowing in my district!
¤êrã§êr¤ - and your thesis topic?
Amanda - well, our school is getting reviewed by the state this year, maybe they are just trying to make us say good things about P.D
debio - artie, you are one of the few, up here in the north, we are having big $$ problems
wizzlewolf - Peak, what degree are you going for?
Amanda - maybe it will be diff. next year
Jo - Artie, count your stars and stock up I think winter is coming along with testing cost
peaknut - Era don't have to do a thesis but i'm researching assessment in art ed
wizzlewolf - Debio, I think a lot of districts all over the US are going to have big time $$$$ problems very soon.
¤êrã§êr¤ - I am doing visual culture stuff
peaknut - Wizz, MEd I'm just doing it for the money
¤êrã§êr¤ - seems to be a big topic
Jo - eraer, what kind of visual culture stuff
wizzlewolf - Peak! You are HONEST!! Tee Hee ;-0
peaknut - Era, I wan't to do visual culture stuff but my prof said it was too broad
wizzlewolf - oops I meant
Amanda - it's sad when you can't even count on finding a job as a teacher
wizzlewolf - Peak, I bet you know all about Donna Kay Beattie
¤êrã§êr¤ - thats odd...I am doing it based on my special ed kids
paula - who is donna Kay?
peaknut - yeah, Wiz I've avoided the degree, but i keep looking at teh salary schedule king at teh
Jo - Amanda don't get discuraged the art jobs are out there sometimes you have to find a backdoor.
wizzlewolf - She is an author of Art Ed books and has a great one on Assessment in the Art room.
¤êrã§êr¤ - visual culture stuff - demystifying modern culture in the kids world
wizzlewolf - Eraser, that sounds facinating!
Artie - Do any of you also hold other teaching certificate?
Amanda - Has anybody ever ordered from Molly Hawkin's before?
peaknut - Thanks Wiz, sources on assessment in the arts are slim
¤êrã§êr¤ - ...MTV, NIKE sneakers...the visual stuff from malls to TV
Jo - Ok, eraer, I need a couple of examples
wizzlewolf - Amanda, Jo is right. You will find a job. You just have to really be persistent.
debio - Artie, never thought I would need more than K-12 art!!
wizzlewolf - Peak, oh gee. Donna Kay Beattie's book is like an assessment bible!
¤êrã§êr¤ - Its really cool...and the kids love talking about it
peaknut - Era, VCAE seems to threaten art teachers, have you found that?
Jo - Artie, I made a point oof having at least one other certification, have some look at your course work and see what extras you could pick up. You maybe surprised
peaknut - Wiz, is that the book been talked about on the getty list? from Davis pub.?
¤êrã§êr¤ - I want to know more about VCAE...its where the kids are at- they don't care about the dead white guys in the galleries
debio - Artie doesn't need to, she already could be a classroom teacher!!
Artie - Jo, I already have it, I went back in '84 and I have a reg. teaching certificate....
wizzlewolf - Artie, I am certified in Special Ed and Art K-12. I could always use my special ed certificate. However, the thought makes me want to
¤êrã§êr¤ - teaching about visual culture has a lot to do with communication, advertising, thinking openly, reflectively
Michal - I keep thinking I need to get certified in something else, but I really don't want to teach anything else!
Artie - I sway, sometimes I think the "classroom" teacher has it a lot easier, but I don't think I could give up art..I love teaching art.!
¤êrã§êr¤ - Wizzlewolf...me too! behavioral and learning disorders
paula - Wiz, are you working in a sp ed environment now?
savannah - Tell me about Molly Hawkins
debio - Is Molly Hawkiins a catalog?
wizzlewolf - Artie!!! Oh my goodness. If our classroom teachers heard you say that they would stone you! They all think the specialist's job is like a vacation! LOL LOL LOL
wizzlewolf - Paula, YES. I work at a school that is exclusively for severely emotionally disturbed K-12
Artie - wiz, like "art is fun" and all play!!! ????
wizzlewolf - mbpart!!! HELLO!!!!!
debio - the classroom teachers are clueless, most of the time and most of them -(bad day)
Jo - Michal, hang in there But look at your credits it can't hurt to hold other certifications sometimes good art jobs come along after a year has started
wizzlewolf - Artie, Oh yeah!!! It is so much fun, we just "COLOR". We don't do any "work" right????? DUH!
¤êrã§êr¤ - Wizzlewolf...do you have an aid
debio - Don't you usually find aids to be in the way? or they try to do the work for the kids?
Artie - Do any of you have a text book, like classroom teachers do?
wizzlewolf - Eraser, no aide. I am the only teacher in the school with no aide. I don't need one. I am a one woman army. Ha Ha Ha
Michal - Jo, Actually I've been teaching 9 years now - I just have to fight to keep my full time status - 1 art teacher and 2 1/2 music teachers. Just doesn't make sense!
Jo - Come on group "we" weren't not All clueless!
Artie - To me, aides are a pain, you have to keep them "busy" or they just nose around...
¤êrã§êr¤ - Hey, me too! Except the elementary classes come with an aide, but they do the activity ...like another kid in the room
Jo - Mochael I know the feeling there were years when class enrollment went down and it was the art teacher that went first.
peaknut - Michal I think it's because Music always has all those strong parent support groups
wizzlewolf - Jo, actully saying ALL classroom teachers don't respect art teachers is false. That is a generalization. I have a lot of teachers who really marvel at what I do and get the kids to produce.
wizzlewolf - Debio. LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!!!!!!!!
¤êrã§êr¤ - Do we have a topic here? or are we just chetting?
Jo - Debio, I know I wouldn't do stage props or posters
¤êrã§êr¤ - chatting...sorry
Michal - Jo, I even showed them that everywhere our test scores are high is what I teach.
Jo - chatting
wizzlewolf - Deb, or Mother's day cards, Fathers Day cards, Easter Cards, Birthday cards, Retirement cards, etc. etc. etc.
mbpart - I just had a discussion with classroom teachers today who marvel at the work I can get "non-productive" students to produce. It has taken me several years to build up the respect of my classroom colleagues.
peaknut - our elementary staff works very closely with the classroom teachers and teh S.S. supervisor actully includes us in HIS budget
Artie - shant we chat?
paula - Dont you just love it when the classroom teachers NEED your artistic talents for their bulletin boards?
paula - To top it off they interupt your class to ask you because its their prep period....
debio - I draw the line (ha ha!) at bulletin boards!
Artie - I get mad when the classroom teachers to ART in the classroom...and STEAL my ideas!!!
Michal - paula - I've thought about hiring out my high school students to make their boards!
wizzlewolf - Paula, Ha Ha Ha Ha This is cracking me up! They come in and say "Would you draw me a bird?" LOL LOL
¤êrã§êr¤ - ¤º°`°º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º° artie? From Florida?º¤ø,¸¸,ø¤º°`°º¤
paula - right.... they claim to be so artistically challenged...
debio - what is a prep period??? when you hang the stuff inthe halls or when you wash the paint brushes and maybe eat??
Michal - artie - just show them - move your projects down a year so the kids will have already done it! *L*
wizzlewolf - Artie, I never care about stolen ideas. I don't even care about that in my own work. My ideas never come out the same when someone else does them.
paula - seems like I am constantly refilling the glue!
Artie - or "I need a star"...I finally got a perfect star on the internet and made copies!!!!
Michal - *LOL* @ artie
wizzlewolf - Paula, no I am constantly cleaning out the sink drain
paula - how about lettering? no one can do that
debio - Artie, even I don't get them coming in to get a star, you must be awesome!!!!8>
wizzlewolf - Artie, that is a good one too!! A star!! LOL Yep, been there!
Michal - I got a new sink with one of those drain traps but they forgot to hook up water to it! *L*
Artie - wizz, you are right, the artistic flair comes from within and we bolster that with the kids!!!1
paula - Wiz, I wish I had a sink to clean out !
Jo - Lets see there was the year my principal descide I could have two preps in the spring, myclassroom burned doen a pack of hound move in under the back porch and a mother possum took over my supply closet. the was the old boar raccon that won't share his sand pile when I tried sanddrawing!
wizzlewolf - Paula, that is so easy for me. I just tell them I can hardly write my name let alone do lettering. Thank God for computers now!
Artie - *grin* Paula, you can come and clean my TWO!!!!
paula - artie, dont rub it in... I hate not having a sink...
debio - I've got 3 sinks and they are so disgusting, but I can't imagine not having them
wizzlewolf - Paula, OH I AM SO SORRY!!! I guess I should be thankful for what I have. However, I have had many a job without a sink, without a room, without supplies, without lots of stuff.
wizzlewolf - I feel like I am living LARGE these days.
¤êrã§êr¤ - <---2 sinks, few kids, no waiting
paula - Wiz, that's what I tell them, then they tell me they dont know how to make the words big. G-d forbid you mention the word "wordART" they go into a frenzy
Artie - PaulaP, I was teasing you!!!! *grin*
wizzlewolf - Well I have two sinks that are chest high on me. More than half my kids can't reach them. <-----Dumb Architects.
paula - artie, lose the P
Michal - paula - tell them to enlarge on the copy machine
Artie - OK
paula - Iknow you were just joshin...
Artie - My sinks are too high, too...
¤êrã§êr¤ - Wizzlewolf: thats what the milk creates are for
paula - Michal, I have tried that, they are just looking for excuses...
Artie - I have 2 wheelchair students, they need a ramp...
wizzlewolf - Eraser, I can't have milk crates laying around. The kids would through them at me. My kids are SED severely emotionally disturbed.
debio - So what is the best thing you have done this week with the kids??
wizzlewolf - I meant "throw" them at me. Duh
paula - Wiz how old are your students?
Jo - wizzlewolf, more power to you
Artie - Stitching and ceramics, and a dynomite drawing project!
savannah - My 6th graders are just finishing up their CD covers this week.
debio - I finished a project that is posted on the teachersnet gazette, with my first graders, they are turning out v. well
wizzlewolf - Deb, I am so excited because my K-1 are creating a book and the rest of us are starting to make movies.
¤êrã§êr¤ - YIKES! mine are lables that too - but they don't through stuff at me. The school is special ed and highly supervised
Michal - debio - I taught my middle schoolers how to matt (with rulers) AND I didn't loose my patience with them! *L*
wizzlewolf - I told them they would be "stars". LOL
debio - Artie, are you going to post your results???? on your website of course
peaknut - wiz making movies with the little ones? great I'm laking movies with the big ones
debio - Michal, good for you! I hate matting and I constantly lose my patience!!!
paula - Michal what do they cut with?
debio - wiz - what kind of book?
Michal - debio - I brought out the rulers and they all got that "DUH" look on their face
wizzlewolf - Eraser, my school is for all the kids not allowed in the regular special ed classes. All of my students have severe behavior problems. They throw, hit, kick, bite, curse, curse, curse, curse, and did I mention curse.
¤êrã§êr¤ - ok...I cant follow this anymore
Michal - paula - we used x-acto knives and I threatened them before we began. I am in a VERY rural school
debio - Michal, I've seen that face before!!!!
Michal - debio - isn't it priceless! *L*
wizzlewolf - Deb, we built a big rocket out of cardboard and then wrote a story about it. It is called "Rocket Dance Party" (their idea). Now we are illustrating on computer.
paula - what face debio?
Jo - wizzlewolf, och I would have thought their one bright spot would be art
paula - Michal, what state are you in?
debio - But I love the AHA face, where they finally get it
debio - Paula, the DUH look- you know clueless
Artie - Debio, are you talking about the "ruler" face...measuring???
Hollyk - My school (regular el ed) has an SED classroom....these kids deserve an education, but does my 2nd grader deserve them telling their teacher to go F herself? WIth no consequence??? JUST because they have an IEP??? I think not
Michal - debio True - that's why we stay in it! Paula - I'm in Kansas
wizzlewolf - HEY GUYS AND GALS, we have to cut our chat off. The EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHERS are scheduled here in ONE minute. You can stay, but it is their room now! See y'all next week!
