BDA Education Rep - Hello
Carter - Can you tell me about available positions in the Bahamas?
BDA Education Rep - Good Evening Everyone. Do you have any questions about teaching positions in Bermuda?
Merlyn - Hello, I love Bermuda and to teach there sounds so inviting!
Stanley - I just saw this & have not had time to even do any research on Bermuda. What is your relationship to the British govt?
nicole - Yes, what do you have available for next term?
BDA Education Rep - Yes, Bermuda is beautiful. Teaching here is also very interesting and rewarding!
Merlyn - Are there ESL positions available in Bermuda?
patricia - I am a special ed teacher with 15 years and a masters and am looking to relocate
Merlyn - I have been to Bermuda twice on a cruise and it is a beautiful island
BDA Education Rep - A team of persons from the Ministry of Education will be in Atlanta, Ga. to interview persons who may be interested in teaching in our education system in September 2001- 2002.
Pam - What teaching positions are you trying to fill?
nicole - I realize that working in Bermuda would be different from vacationing there but I've been trying to find a way to teach abroad in the Caribbean for about two years now and this is so exciting for me!
Carter - Bermuda is a place I truly would love to live. I've vacationed there and want to know if you have positions in the field of home economics?
BDA Education Rep - Bermuda is a British territory.
patricia - I have sent my credentials and resume to Veronica Todd. I would like to make sure she received it. Her email on the listing does not work
Stanley - Will they be anywhere else in the USA? Plus, I'd be MORE interested down the line a few years...
nicole - September? When does your school year begin..or are these interviews actually for the following year?
BDA Education Rep - We are looking for Spanish teachers, special ed., reading teachers and learning support teachers.
Stanley - What is the govt's policy on non-British citizens teaching? Would one be expected to eventually apply for British citizenship?
nicole - I'm full of questions tonight- when you say reading teachers, does that mean a reading specialist certificate is necessary?
BDA Education Rep - Patricia- Please fax your information to 441-236-6859. Sometimes our system does go down.
BDA Education Rep - The school year begins the day after labour day.
Carter - Do all positions require certification?
Merlyn - Would one need a work visa to teach?
Gumbo - When is labor day-----is it the first Mon. in Sept?
nicole - If the school year begins the day after labor day, when will the interviews be held? I am wondering about the paperwork, too, and how long it all takes
Merlyn - Yes Gumbo
BDA Education Rep - Stanley - No to your question re application for citizenship. We bring you to Bermuda for a specified period of time-2/3 years. Then if you wish to stay longer you then ask for an extension to your contracted time
BDA Education Rep - Carter: Yes, only trained teachers will be considered- certified!
Gumbo - merlyn-----I was wondering if it was the same in Bermuda, since they're a British territory.......
BDA Education Rep - Yes, Gumbo.
Gumbo - so the contract would be for 2-3 yrs?
patricia - How does salary and benefits compare to the US
nicole - Is there an application available prior to the interview?
Stanley - Do you have any particular need for elementary Ts?
BDA Education Rep - Yes, immigration approval is requested, but if one is selected/hired, we do all the necessary paperwork on your behalf. You do supply pertinent information which we will send or give at the interview in Atlanta
patricia - Will an interview be set up after faxing my paperwork
Merlyn - What about duties, observations, state/island testing, etc?
BDA Education Rep - The contract depends on the need, and a contract could be for 1, 2 or 3 years.
nicole - by pertinent info, do you mean for immigration or for the job?
Pat - What do you require for reading teachers? Is Reading Recovery training an asset?
Gumbo - I guess there's no need for kindergarten or lower elementary grades, are there?
BDA Education Rep - Salary for a person who has been teaching for three years with a BSc degree in education is 48,094.80.
nicole - What are the chances of an American being hired?
nicole - Is $48, 094 in US ?
BDA Education Rep - Patricia- If you have the requirements , we will telephone you to set up an interview.
Merlyn - What is the cost of living? I know that cars are few and far between!
nicole - Patricia- how did you get your hands on an application?
BDA Education Rep - Pat; Yes!, it would be excellent if you have such.
Stanley - The salary you state is *HIGH* for the USA. What is your cost of living there?
patricia - I didn't - I just called the number on the posting and was given a number to fax my resume and certifications and transcripts
BDA Education Rep - Gumbo- Not sure at this time. However you can fax us infor re yourself
BDA Education Rep - Nicole- Bda dollars are on par with US dollar

Gumbo - What about taxes......
BDA Education Rep - Stanley: Very high
Merlyn - How much would a 2 bedroom apartment rent for
BDA Education Rep - Gumbo- we do not have taxes, but deductions are made for superanuation, health insurance, union dues and government pension.
nicole - What parts of Bermuda are we talking about- are the schools more rural or in tourist areas?
Gumbo - When are the interviews in Atlanta?
Pat - Your salary quote was for three years experience. For how many years do you add salary increments?
patricia - Is there help available for relocation
BDA Education Rep - Merlyn:Studio Apt. $850- $1200, 2 Bedroom - $1850-$2,200. We do find housing for the initial set up, but one can search for other accommodations when they arrive or have had a chance to settle in
nicole - Again, do you have any suggestions for getting myself started in this process?
BDA Education Rep - Salary increments depend on the length of time one has been teachin. Usually after 5 years one is frozen. However, negotiations occur between the union and the Gov. every two years
Merlyn - Do you have a website with information about your school system??

Kathleen - BDA rep, would the learning support teacher have his/her own classroom, or work within other classrooms?
Kathleen - Nancy, I don't have that info. This is a meeting for those interested in applying for teaching positions in Bermuda.
Kathleen - nancy, try posting at http://teachers.net/chatboard
BDA Education Rep - Kathleen: Both situations occur in Bermuda
Pam - Are you interviewing anywhere else in the U.S.? I am a long ways from Atlanta. Is there a website to find out more information?
Kathleen - BDA rep, which are you seeking, the learning support for separate classroom or in classroo, or both?
Stanley - Why might there be a T shortage in Bermuda??
BDA Education Rep - Pam fax your interests/application/ teaching experience/resume to me on Fax #441-236-6859
BDA Education Rep - Stanley: There is teacher shortage worldwide.
Kathleen - Stanley, my guess: tiny country (only 22 miles long), therefore lack of specialties due to low # of teachers
Pam - What is the average number of students?
Kathleen - Many areas are lacking teachers
BDA Education Rep - Pam: Where are you from?
Pam - I presently live in the Kansas City, MO area.
patricia - Thank you for the information. Hope to be hearing from you soon. Sounds like a teaching adventure I'd be very interested in.
BDA Education Rep - K-2 = 15 students, 3-5 = 20 students
Stanley - So, general K-8 is not an area of need? Also, you mentioned Spanish. Is that because you HAVE Spanish-speakers, or because there's a desire to teach it as a 2nd language?
BDA Education Rep - You're welcome Patricia
BDA Education Rep - Teachers I will be wrapping up in 5 minutes. Thanks for coming.
Pat - If I called the # given on Monday would i be able to talk to someone about my own situation or is it just for resumes?jus
Kathleen - I'll send unanswered questions from the transcript to BDA rep then post them w/her responses on the main chatboard on on Jobs mailring
BDA Education Rep - Yes Stanley it is. Spanish is taught in middle and senior school level.
Pam - Thank you for all of the information provided here tonight. It is definately something to consider.
BDA Education Rep - Yes Pat remember Bermuda is an hour ahead of EST

Stanley - THANK YOU, BDA rep! But general elementary in NOT an area of need?
BDA Education Rep - Well teachers it has been a pleasure. I look forward to recieving your information.
Kathleen - Stanley, I guess only those specialities are needed at this time
