Teacher Gnat - This is my 4th year in K
Paulie - and 2nd gr
Teacher Gnat - I love K too -- except for the tantrums!
JenTX - Paulie, I thought you had a class. I always read your posts!
Paulie - <----never had a tantrum in K (the kids haven't had any either)
AP - Since all three of you are k teachers can you believe this. We just learned that our poor k's will start taking a bubble format test in the spring
Paulie -
Paulie - AP that is sickening
JenTX - No way AP. I;'m shaking my head!
Paulie - so sad NOT DAP
Teacher Gnat - That is pretty crazy!
AP - So were we when we learned this!
Paulie - Jen nope but I liek to help when I can thanks
JenTX - Gnat, what state?
Teacher Gnat - I have really, really young kids this year.........can't imagine
Paulie - can't u fight it?
Teacher Gnat - I am from Idaho
Paulie - is this because of NCLB crap?
AP - No. It's all tied to DOLLARS
Paulie - <---------born in Pocatello, Idaho
AP - Yup!
Teacher Gnat - Where are you guys all from?
AP - Michigan
Paulie - Vancouver, WA now
Teacher Gnat - Cool Paulie.........where now?
Paulie - Gnat what town in Idaho?
JenTX - You guys are enjoying some REAL weather!
Teacher Gnat - Well...........Meridian.......but right by Boise
Teacher Gnat - Oh it's so nice htere!
Teacher Gnat - here
Paulie - have lived in so and no California, Hawaii, Connecticut, Massachusetts, S Carolina, Idaho and WA
Paulie - I know whre Meridian is
AP - WOW ! And which state is your favorite?
Paulie - real????? It was 62 this past week broke all time records for high that day this month no snow yet!!!!!!!
AP - Anyone listening to George W? He's on TV right now.
JenTX - Have you celebrated the 100th day of school?
Teacher Gnat - You're husband must get transfered a lot!
Teacher Gnat - Yeah.......I'm watching as I type!
JenTX - He's blabbing as aI type!
Teacher Gnat - We will celebrate the 100th day on Feb. 12th
Paulie - I liked Idaho for the seasons and snow, I liked hawaii cause I learned so much but cost of living is too much, south carolina was just 4 months so did nto get to know it, I ahte CA -- north and south I love this city but I want more snow CT and Mass were ok
AP - We will be celebrating the 100th day next Wed.
Paulie - we were in military then been divorced long time
JenTX - We celebrate on Th the 30th
Teacher Gnat - Oh I'm sorry
Paulie - I'm not
JenTX - Paulie, my husband & I were married in Seoul, Korea
Paulie - in the military Jen?
JenTX - He was Army. I was just around eyed civilian visiting my sister.
AP - Why Korea?
Paulie - Bush is speaking so we will suppor his war
JenTX - I do not want this war
Paulie - nice
Teacher Gnat - Definately do NOT want war.....
Paulie - me either both my sons were in the last Gulf war
JenTX - More money will go to the war & less to education
Paulie - one is still in navy and might get sent there and the other is in Reserves and got called up but they changed it and now he is on standby
AP - It really make me sad to think we might be going to war
Paulie - if he goes he will miss his daughter's high school graduation
JenTX - My baby just got out of the Marines in June & is safely home going to college PTL.
Paulie - well if they took all the money in the NCLB and improved school buildings and resources for all schools the kids and teachers would both benefit
JenTX - Paulie, is your son on stand by
Paulie - that is good jen
Teacher Gnat - I just hope that we won't regret NOT going to war later in the years
Paulie - AP we are at war already
Paulie - cause of 9 11 but this is just another part of it
JenTX - AP, makes me sad, too. My first year of teaching, I had kids with parents going to the Gulf War
Paulie - the Navy Reserve one is on standby
Paulie - er one is on shore duty til may and then who knows if his new ship out of maine will get sent there
JenTX - Hi, Pam! Welcome. What grade?
AP - Hi Pam! What grade do you teach?
Pam - Hi! I teach first grade in Texas
JenTX - Where in TX? I'm at San Antonio
Paulie - welcome Pam come each Tuesday night we are here
AP - Jen and Pam what's the literacy focus these days in Texas?
Pam - Thanks. I spend a lot of time on the message boards but have never done a chat. Hope you don't mind if I visit
Pam - I'm in West Texas
Paulie - I think a couple of the regulars might be watching the president instead of coming they will be here later because this chat is three hours well really two but no one leaves the hour between the two schedules for this chat
Paulie - You can come and listen or talk up when you want to this is not scheduled topic so you can talk about anything
JenTX - Our district is strong on balanced literacy. Focused on 6 Traits Writing this year!
Paulie - (that is appropriate) lol
Teacher Gnat - Any Kindergarten teachers here who do Kid Writing?
Pam - Literacy focus- hmmm... well, we spend too much time testing instead of teaching, but that's not really the literacy focus.
Paulie - 6 traits is great
Paulie - I will use Kid Writing if I get another K class
Teacher Gnat - Same here.......IRI
JenTX - Just ordered the book, but haven't had time to read it yet. I have great writers tho
AP - Would Ginny Hoover be the best resource for finding out more about 6 Traits?
JenTX - My kinder class has to present a 6 Trait lesson for ideas in March
Pam - We are strong on guided reading (Fountas and Pinnell)
Teacher Gnat - IRI -- Idaho Reading Indicator
JenTX - Ginny has lots of info. I keyed in 6 Traits & found more
Paulie - AP o yes she has a wonderful 6 traits site
AP - Thanks!
JenTX - I love F & P. Did guided reading 6 yrs in 1st & am bumping along in kinder.
Paulie - Gnat what is that?
Teacher Gnat - It's a state wide test for grade K-3 to see if they are reading on level
Pam - I am Reading Recovery trained so using the guided reading in my class along with the RR techniques has been pretty successful this year.
Paulie - o no testing those little K kids?
AP - Hi Lucy and writers block!
Paulie - hi writers block
JenTX - We are doing the TPRI & I have it
Pam - Hello Lucy and hello Writer's Block
Lucy - Hi all
writers block - hi, I need a mini lesson in writing for thursday
Teacher Gnat - Oh yes..........and the teachers get the pressure if the kids don't do well
JenTX - Pam, I worship R.R. teachers!
AP - Lucy and Writer's block..What grades do you teach?
Pam - Jen- I just finished my mid-year TPRI's
Teacher Gnat - Do you do Kid writing writers block?
writers block - 2nd grade
Paulie - You know when all we do is "teach to the test" we really aren't teaching a love of learning
JenTX - What do you think of it. I meant to say hate it below.
Paulie - an u get kids to be excited about education if all education is full of testing and no time to explore and wonder???????
Pam - It's such an awesome program. Our school is training EVERY primary teacher in RR so I have to wait my turn to get back into it
writers block - never heard of Kid Writing.....writing isn't my strongest area
Paulie - writer's block what gr level?
JenTX - You are so right, Paulie. It is awful in TX or at least my district.
AP - I teach second grade, too. Why do you need a mini-lesson for Thurs.?
writers block - 2nd grade
Pam - Paulie- I agree with you 100%
Paulie - o 2nd gr
JenTX - Pam, we have RR teachers in training now
Paulie - that is why I won't go to TX or FL to teach and now CA got on the bandwagon and I got out of therre almost not fast enough
writers block - principal is observing....'course he asks what do you feel is your weak point? I say the truth "writing" and he says...I'll observe that then...AHHH
Pam - Are they doing the classroom model or strictly RR? Last year I did 1/2 day first and 1/2 day RR.
JenTX - Strictly RR, very intensive!
Pam - Paulie- you probably already said, and I missed it, but what state are you from?
Paulie - Well writer's block what are u doing in writing now so we can help you think of something good to use?
Paulie - WA state
AP - Hmmmm. What does your curriculum guide say that you should be teaching in regards to writing?
writers block - we are just finishing up our snowflake stories...thursday will be something new....they still need help in adding detail
Paulie - do u use 6 traits writer's block?
writers block - writer's worshop
Pam - Writers block- now you know what to tell the principal for next year, don't you?? Tell him your strongest area instead!!!
JenTX - I love writer's workshop in first, but haven't had time in K
writers block - Pam....LOL....sure do! I wanted to change my mind this year!
Paulie - so u want to do more about your snowflake writing?
Teacher Gnat - I sort of do Writers Workshop in K but it's driving me crazy.........they just can't write for that long!
Paulie - for the observation?
JenTX - So true Gnat
writers block - 6 traits ...no....I've heard of it somewhat
writers block - no...for the observation I want to start something new
Paulie - o
JenTX - My kinders love to write, but 20 minutes tops
AP - What about a lesson on details? You could pre-write a story and have them help you rewrite the story using more details.
Paulie - what about using a calendar picture to write about?
Teacher Gnat - What did you do Jen to keep your kids loving writing?
writers block - ome mini lesson on adding details?
Paulie - first model on overhead yur thoughts
Paulie - n have kids do with a brand new picture?
JenTX - We started our journals the first day & there's writing in all literacy centers, home center too
Pam - Giving details about themselves so that the others have to guess who each one is?
Paulie - in describing the calendar picture (bunch of teddy bears in wagons and on trikes and standing and turnign somersaults) lol lots to describe
writers block - ok, I have an idea can I run it by you and please give suggestions
Teacher Gnat - Yeah........I started journals the first day too........but some of my kids dread journal time........why?
Paulie - OR
Paulie - u could write a basic sentence on the board
Pam - Paulie- I do this with my first graders all the time- they LOVE to write about big calendar pictures!
JenTX - I'v been sitting with them during writing center & journals one-on-one to teach them how to say a word, stretch it, clap, it & write the sounds they hear. They are amazing me
Paulie - The cat sat.
Paulie - The fat, lazy cat sat
Teacher Gnat - yeah..........I do that........Kid Writing
Paulie - he fat lazy cat sat on the porch
Paulie - fat lazy cat sat on the front porch
Paulie - etc
JenTX - We started journals with just pictures, names, classroom environmental print
Paulie - Pam the calendar picture -- describe the pic in writing is a great activitey for any gr
Pam - Shoot- gotta go- phone call. Thanks for letting me pop in gals!
JenTX - bye pam
Teacher Gnat - I have a word wall and we're working on sight words
Paulie - come back pam we will be here for a couple more hours
Paulie - sight words in K?
JenTX - Bush says he has the terrorists on the run
AP - Going withPaulie's idea you could give everyone a picture from a magazine or clip art and do what Paulie said in building more complex sentences that describe the picture
Paulie - well he has to say that
writers block - I'd use index cards or sentence strips.....I would put a noun and verb on cards or sentence strip and they must add detail to make a sentence without using my words. For example.....dog ran. They might say...."The beagle raced by the green bench in the park.
Teacher Gnat - I have a 20 to 30 minute time when I model my own picture and then they quietly work on their own.........and the last 5 to 10 minutes it's a no talking time..........
JenTX - Yes, sight words on the word wall. Use highlight tape to find them in the morning message , books, etc
Paulie - first draft of calendar pics don't have to be wonderful because the lesson could be on how to improve them
JenTX - Gnat, how do you stop them from talking? I played Enya today
Teacher Gnat - I just have a few who don't want to do journal time and it is becoming frustrating
JenTX - Are they low, high, Gnat
Paulie - well then use that writer's block but I think using the calendar would be better for observation
Teacher Gnat - I put a stop sign out and go around and praise the heck out of tables on task
writers block - does that sound alright or not?
Teacher Gnat - A couple complainers are pretty high but also pretty young and the others are really low
Paulie - Gnat are they required to do a certain way in Journals?
JenTX - What do the low ones do in their journals? Do you share? We do most of the time
Teacher Gnat - They write about anything they want -- is that want you mean?
writers block - I don't have to use that....that is just what I was thinking today
Teacher Gnat - At Centers is when I have specific topics for them to write about
AP - As long as the group can see the index cards and/or sentence strips. I think the overhead idea that Paulie suggested is a good idea because it makes it easier for the kids to see and the darkened room keeps them focused
Paulie - I don't knwo. . .I think I would write the sentecne on sentence strip and post then get the kids to brainstorm lots of words that could be inthe place of the neouns, verb and adjectives
JenTX - Mostly pictures? Writing? ABC's from the room? Names of friends? What do you see them writing about
Paulie - then each could choose from the "pot" to make their own unique sentences
Teacher Gnat - See......I don't do the share part........the low ones just write strings of letters and my really, really low one makes a really little picture with a couple letters
Paulie - do u ever let them write in journal anything they choose without a topic?
Paulie - Gnat that is fine that is beginning writing
JenTX - It wounds like you're doing everything, plus lots of good praising
Teacher Gnat - Oh everytime...........I never give them a topic in Journals..............only at Centers on regular paper (separate from journals)
JenTX - Sounds, not wounds
Paulie - AP . . .and you are using more media in lesson which is good too
writers block - well here's what I was also thinking...I was thinking of coming up with 4 different sets of cards and having them grouped and working on the sentence as a group.
Paulie - being a K teacher I knew u meant sounds lol
Teacher Gnat - I just want them to be excited about writing like I hear from EVERY teacher who uses Kid Writing.......wish I knew what I was doing wrong!
AP - How many students do you have writer's block?
Paulie - 4 groups is pandemonium for that kind of observation IF they never did before
JenTX - For awhile, all my kids did rainbows and houses. Thought I'd lose my mind
Paulie - I never had a separate journal time -- Journals was a group for centers
Teacher Gnat - Yeah............me too..........many are doing better........but some have such a hard time adding detail and staying at their seat until the 20 minutes are up
JenTX - I haven't used the kidwriting yet. Still have to read it
writers block - 16 students
AP - Jen...Where can I find out more about Kid Writing? I'd like to give the info to our k teachers.
Teacher Gnat - It is just what you are doing Jen
Paulie - sometimes yu can ask them to write in Journals about the weather (snow, rain or whatever) and you won't always get rainbows
AP - I have 16 students too. So management shouldn't be a problem.
JenTX - I ordered mine from the Wright Group. Got it from the kinder board.
Paulie - so put a small basket of books to look at when their writing is finished
writers block - no management probs...they are a great group of kids
AP - Thanks!
JenTX - Yeh, we had fog today. My kids said it was froggy. They are so cute.
Paulie - jsut put Kid writing into google.com and you will ahve address
Teacher Gnat - LOL
writers block - I was thinking the group thing because our district is big on groups
Paulie - I love froggy weather!
Paulie - writer's blcok then go with what you feel most comfortable
Teacher Gnat - That's true Paulie..........I could have books out.........but I'm afraid they would quit writing too soon and not put much time into drawing or writing
JenTX - When my kids say they are finished, I ask them to add a few more details. I ask them about their picture, then say "Could you add ......"
AP - On Monday's my second graders write in their journals about their weekend of a show and tell item that they are allowed to bring to school. After 15 minutes of writing, they get into three groups to share. They love it.
Paulie - Gnat then train them
Teacher Gnat - I do that too
Paulie - ave the whole class do journals at one time
AP - Hi jeri!
JenTX - That sounds great, AP
Paulie - you do the journal on chart paper or on board
writers block - what if...I did a short story on the overhead having them help add details...THEN gave them the cards and they added detail to make a sentence?
Paulie - draw your pic and write some Think outloud
Paulie - model model model
AP - That was...write about their weekend OR a show and tell....
JenTX - Hi jeri1
Paulie - del writing just a little with a pic and then model how to write a little more and then model how to go wover it and write even more then get a book a read quietly
jeri-gr1 - hello!
Paulie - model
Teacher Gnat - Yeah........that's exactly what I do..........every time we do journals..........I guess I just have to figure out what it is the kids don't like about journals (some really like it)
JenTX - So true about modeling. Paulie
jeri-gr1 - This is my first time here
Paulie - writer's block that sounds fine do u have time to practice it before your observation?
JenTX - How was your day today in first?
Teacher Gnat - Yeah........that's a good idea.......modeling adding more and more.........I have done that though....but they are 5 and 6 I guess and it will take time
Paulie - come every Tues nite 9-12 eastern time
AP - My son didn't like journals in K because he didn't know how to spell and he did not have a word wall or anything else to rely on to help him put his thoughts down on paper.
writers block - the reason I'm avoiding the calendar pics is I've done that already
JenTX - Do you guys come every T? I haven't been in awhile
jeri-gr1 - okay! I taught K for 2 years, now I've been promoted!! I think
AP - They also were writing in spiral notebooks on college ruled paper.
Teacher Gnat - I teach them not to worry about spelling...........just how to sound out the words and then I add words to the wall as needed
Paulie - but the principal doesn't know u did the calendars already
writers block - Paulie, you mean practice w/ the kids before the observation?
Paulie - only a couple Tues have I been absent
Paulie - as none this year on New Year's eve or Christmas ee tho
Paulie - not the same day writer's block
writers block - Paulie, but the kids know it and even though I have a good group....they will say without a doubt "We did this before."
Paulie - and not with the same materials
JenTX - Yeh, writers block. Be careful about doing that
AP - His teacher did tell him not to worry about spelling, but he really did not receive much phonics instruction so he would draw instead of write.
writers block - well the observation is Thursday and tomorrow is already Wednesday and
writers block - well the observation is Thursday and tomorrow is already Wednesday
Teacher Gnat - Did he ever begin liking writing?
Paulie - I usually had a poster board with theme words for them I did one for winter I put a picture of a coat and wrote c o a t below it
JenTX - My journals are spirals, because I don't have time to make journals. It doesn't bother my kids. We ignore the lines
Paulie - s like a theme work wall and was put away when winter was over
jeri-gr1 - I don't want to be interrupting the conversation... but do they draw in their jornals
writers block - found out yesterday he was coming to observe
AP - No. He's better at it now, but no, he still doesn't care to write. His sister loves to write.
JenTX - Writers block, what kind of writing is displayed in your school
Paulie - we used zoo phonics where the kids had actions in the shape of the letters and they remembered the animal I could see kids writing in journals doing the actions fo the sounds they heard and then writing it
Teacher Gnat - Oh yes...........draw and write
writers block - well thank you all for all the wonderful ideas
JenTX - Mine do jeri. They draw first. Write. Color last.
AP - jeri....you are not interrupting. Just type away
writers block - mostly narratives, some persuasive
Paulie - so practive with one thing u r doing tomorrow and then on Thursd let the kids know u will be doing the same thing with different theme writer's blcok
jeri-gr1 - I would explain to the principal what your outcomes are
Paulie - jeri K kids draw in journals
jeri-gr1 - I would explain to the principal what your outcomes are
JenTX - What's your fav kind of writing with your kids, WB
Paulie - we always had to turn in a paper with what we were teaching, resources, objectives, standards covered etc
jeri-gr1 - Do you have adult support in your classroom?
Paulie - do u mean aides or parents jeri?
writers block - i really don't have a fav
Teacher Gnat - I have some parents and Title 1 for half an hour to work with really low kids
Paulie - she hates to write lol
jeri-gr1 - I did journals once a week in my classroom with adult support saying words slowly, articualing sounds
writers block - i do have an aide in at writing time...this is my 1st yr teaching and as I said before...writing is not a strength
jeri-gr1 - I did parents last year. K teachers have paras this year
JenTX - Will the aide be there for the observation
writers block - yes the aide will be there
Paulie - I have to make a phone call I will be abck in about 15 minutes sure hope u guys will stay and be here when I get back
Teacher Gnat - Yeah............I think K teachers scare off the parents for the future years........LOL
jeri-gr1 - Well Welcome to the teaching world! I struggled with writing my first year
JenTX - My kid's best writing comes from what we're reading
Paulie - Be sure to use the aide to help with your lesson then
JenTX - You better come back, Paulie
AP - Bye Paulie.. I think I might take a break too
Paulie - I will
Teacher Gnat - I have to go too
jeri-gr1 - What I really helped me was presenting my class with a model my own
writers block - well I don't want to take up anymore of your time with this...thanks for all the input!
jeri-gr1 - They helped me write the sentence, interactive writing
JenTX - What have you decided WB
Teacher Gnat - Thank you for all your help with my question too!
Teacher Gnat - You guys have been great!
jeri-gr1 - I can help you if you want It's no trouble
writers block - JenTX...sadly ...I'm still not sure
JenTX - I'm feeling nervous for you
Teacher Gnat - I've got to go get something done! Have a great night!
writers block - don't feel nervous for me, I'll be nervous for the world
JenTX - bye gnat
JenTX - That was funny WB
jeri-gr1 - Can I help you? Maybe I can give you insight
writers block - good I'm glad you thought so
writers block - jeri, I just need a lesson for writing (2nd grade) dealing with adding details
JenTX - Would this be too simple? Find your best picture book. Read it. Discuss how reading books can give you good ideas to write about. Ask them what they would write about after hearing the story again. Then, let me draw pictures, write & share with a buddy as you walk around.
jeri-gr1 - Oh! my Friend did a great lesson
writers block - what was that heri?
JenTX - The details will come in the pictures. You could comment on all the good details you see & tell them how you can't wait to see the details in their writing.
writers block - JenTX ...they are....mostly beyond that
writers block - oops heri=jeri (SORRY)
jeri-gr1 - She typed a really boring paragraph about treasure. She talked about words that would make this a better piece
jeri-gr1 - they brainstormed interesting words, then rewrote a new paragraph on the treasure
JenTX - That sounds great, jeri
jeri-gr1 - then they discussed which one was more interesting and why
writers block - what if.....Together as a whole group we did a few sentences for adding details ....then had them break into groups and have a paper already for them that had a BORING story and each group had to make it more interesting by adding details
writers block - then each group could share their details
JenTX - The sharing is the hard part of an observation so think how you would share their work
JenTX - So they work well together in groups?
jeri-gr1 - Great ide, I think she did that the first day and built upon it each day until they were independently writing, interesting paragraohs
jeri-gr1 - you could jigsaw? or have them share their most interesting sentence
JenTX - Hi WB
WB - I'm back (writers block)
WB - what is jigsaw?
JenTX - Did you get kicked off
WB - yes I was kicked
jeri-gr1 - Thats when they work in groups and then share with one other group, instead of whole group sharing
WB - oh ok
JenTX - It's good that they used to working in groups already
WB - yes, we do a lot of group problem solving
JenTX - my son is going to pop me some popcorn
WB - how old is he?
jeri-gr1 - Your roll during group work is facilitating, asking probing questions, helping with strugglers
WB - I have a 11 month old daughter
JenTX - He's 22, an ex Marine & a cutie patootie
JenTX - WB, what a great age
WB - JenTX ....LOL....proud mom huh?
jeri-gr1 - I have a 2 year old 2/14/01
JenTX - Oh, yes. And, he made it safely home in June
jeri-gr1 - boy
JenTX - How do you guys teach with some little ones?
JenTX - I mean such little ones
WB - yea, she's a cutie too, looks like her mommy
jeri-gr1 - Struggle! I am getting my masters too
WB - it is TOUGH but you do what you have to do
JenTX - Oh my gosh, jeri
jeri-gr1 - Yep!!! I ve been teaching for 4 years
JenTX - When you are motivated, you can do anything
WB - and to make matters worse LOL....I'm first year teacher but it is a long term position meaning I'm not permanent even though I have them the entire year
WB - so this observation puts even more stress on me
WB - he observed me in November and couldn't find a negative thing to say but that was in math and that is my strong area!!!
jeri-gr1 - I've been there!! At least they where yours, I long term subded feb-june!! Not fun
JenTX - My husband & my son are standing over me & interfering with my concentration
jeri-gr1 - As long as you are adressing the needs of your students, providing appropriate lesson sequence you should be fine
WB - alright, I'm off to plan plan plan plan plan and rip out some hair
jeri-gr1 - Make sure your honest in your post ob!!
JenTX - It will be over before you know it, WB
Paulie - o I get it duh . . .WB is writer's block
jeri-gr1 - good luck!! You'll be great!!!
Paulie - gosh lots fo people left
JenTX - Let us know how it went
WB - scream a little, pace some....AHHH
Paulie - our governor Gary Locke here in WA state is so against Bush's proposals tonight from schools to the elderly YEA!
JenTX - Yeh, Paulie, they read to hear George go blah, blah, blah
WB - night all
JenTX - night wb
jeri-gr1 - remember deep breaths!! Tell your class he's checking on them
Paulie - bye WB and good luck
jeri-gr1 - night
Paulie - give them all a peppermint candy and their brains will be stimulated
Paulie - t give to them before prin comes
JenTX - Peppermint really works!
Paulie - yes it is brain food
jeri-gr1 - I do brain gym!!!
Paulie - brain gym is good too
JenTX - What is brain gym
Mauce - I'm taking a break from 45 report cards - my brain is numb!
JenTX - welcome back AP
Paulie - physical exercises that movements cros sthe heart and get the brain in all its parts to be working
Paulie - rehi AP
AP~ - Thanks!
Paulie - Mauce thought u were listening to president
jeri-gr1 - It's a series of excersises that stimulates the brain
jeri-gr1 - There are series of hand exersises too. to train the break
Paulie - I think that is what I said . . . :
JenTX - Oh, we do that during calendar. Didn't know what it was called. We make X's with our body & my kids tell me they're working their brains
jeri-gr1 - oops brain
Paulie -
AP~ - So, peppermint, huh? Maybe we should give some to our 4th and 5th graders before they take the MEAP .
Paulie - yup Jen
Paulie - AP yes I did when I taught 4th grade
jeri-gr1 - you did!! My puter is so slow, and it takes long to post!
JenTX - We do exercises every day before the morning message
Paulie - ter bottles are great too BUT u can't have on desk for those tests
JenTX - I read it as putter the first time
Mauce - Hi AP! Happy MEAP week to you!
Paulie - lol
JenTX - What grade, Mauce?
meeha/ece/tx - Poor Mauce ... what a terrible week! (((TEKS week comes in March or April!)))
Paulie - knowing that the MEAP is so sooon after Christmas u could ahve bought peppermint candy canes after the holidays for next to nothing
jeri-gr1 - Well it is 10:30 here and I have 21 cherubs waiting for me in the am
Mauce - I play a movement tape while I put the attendance in the computer. then when we do the calendar, etc. e walk to where the flag hangs, say the pledge, and go back to the calendar area using a different movement each day.
meeha/ece/tx - 'evening, Jen! How are you?
Paulie - coem next week jeri
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, jeri-grl ... rest well!
AP~ - But not happy MEAP week. Sad MEAP week. Our 4th graders are not going to do well.
JenTX - It's only 9:30 here & I was tired before I sat down
Paulie - good plan Mauce
JenTX - bye jeri
Paulie - 7:30 here
jeri-gr1 - I 'm not sure! I take two classes on Tuesday night
Mauce - Hi, Meeha! My classes do not take the MEAP but the whole school offfers encouragement to the 4th and 5th graders who do take it. Schedules work around it, etc.
meeha/ece/tx - 2 classes, jeri? What are you studying?
Paulie - well take them pepermints and have their teachers cross their chect sith arms and then footsteps so brain gets in gear
Paulie - no class tonight?
AP~ - Actually Paulie, Meijer food store donated boxes of candy canes last week for our math night, and we still have a boat load left over!
Paulie - well dig them out AP
meeha/ece/tx - Jen -- where are you in TX? I'm in Arlington!
jeri-gr1 - I'm getting my masters in SPED for a cross endorsement
Paulie - they can use all the help they can get
AP~ - Will do
jeri-gr1 - I'm finish!! Got out early
meeha/ece/tx - Go, jeri! I finished up my masters (SPED) last May ... looking toward doctoral degree now!
JenTX - Boy, SPED is in demand here
Paulie - they need to eat before the test not during
JenTX - I'm in San Antonio
jeri-gr1 - Im in CT!! COLD COLD COLD HERE!!!
meeha/ece/tx - I like that part of the state ... the hill country is so pretty!
Paulie - jeri we are here from6-9 eastern time every Tuesd almsot
jeri-gr1 - did I mention I also have a 2 year old??? LOL
JenTX - It gets a little cold here & our kids don't get to go out for recess. Can you imagine the wiggling?
AP~ - Wow! Doctoral degree. Woohoo! Wish I had the time and energy to go for mine.
Paulie - well there are teachers who come here with little ones too
jeri-gr1 - well I might miss you then I get out of class @ 9 ish,
Paulie - Jen get soem records/tapes/CDs or soem kind of music and let them get the wiggles out
Mauce - We will be looking for you, jeri, come whenever you can
Paulie - jeri where are u?
jeri-gr1 - did I mention that it was -13 the other day? We haven't been out for recess in 3 weeks
JenTX - We do Limbo Rock
meeha/ece/tx - AP ... I"m very single ... really enjoyed the collegiate atmosphere ... trying to decide if I leave the classroom while I study or do part-time study.
Paulie - I said it wrong I meant west Pacific time
Paulie - 9-12 eastern time
meeha/ece/tx - We went out today -- was supposed to be about 70 degrees ... of course the winds turned, felt about 40 while we were out there!
JenTX - 13 DEGREES
jeri-gr1 - CT, Middletown
AP~ - What will you do once you get your degree?
Mauce - We are above zero for the first time in days. Heatwave 20 degrees without the wind chill!
Paulie - o CT time for on here is 9-12 sorry for mix up
jeri-gr1 - negative 13 degrees -13,-13
Paulie - had 62 the other day this week sickening when we are supposed ot ahve snow by now
meeha/ece/tx - Mauce ... I remember 20 degrees and wanting to pull out the summer clothes when I lived up there!
AP~ - LOL ..We'll be wearing shorts by the weekend. Right, Mauce?
JenTX - BRRRRRRRRR, jeri
jeri-gr1 - okay!! that's good!! We had a heat wave of 24 on sunday
meeha/ece/tx - AP -- eventually I'll teach at university ... or private practice ...
JenTX - What are you guys studying with your kids right now
jeri-gr1 - lol very jealous!!!
Paulie - yes when I lived in upstate New York (I forgot that one lol for almost 4 years) we had really cold winters and were glad for 40 degrees
AP~ - How cool, meeha. I envy you. I've been told by many that I should consider teaching at the college level.
Paulie - wow meeha never knew u wanted ot leave your wee ones
meeha/ece/tx - This week finishing up "Penguins and Polar Bears" ... next ... FEELINGS
jeri-gr1 - We are studying ourselves, countries, Matter and normal LAnguage and math
AP~ - Let's see Jen....Sound, /- with regrouping, fairy tales, and economics.
JenTX - We're doing bugs. I have mealworms right now
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- just coming to understand that I can't sit on ten-inch chairs until I'm almost 70! May stay with little ones for several years yet!
jeri-gr1 - I miss kindergarten, when themes are free from curriculum demands
Paulie - bugs in the winter?
AP~ - That was suppose to be / - with regrouping.
Paulie - not anymore some places jeri some are having their K kids do bubble tets now sigh
Paulie - tests
JenTX - Actually our theme comes from Harcourt L.A. & the science framwork in our district. I prefer to do bugs in the spring when you can SEE them
jeri-gr1 - lol! chairs are a little bit taller in 1st grade
Paulie - amen Jen
JenTX - And, I have to do Math Investigations in K
meeha/ece/tx - got a call from our program coordinator today ... she's sending me a special little one who comes with a parent already upset with the district ... my job -- in addition to educating the little one -- is to finnesse the mom back into feeling good about and working with the district! I told my t.a.'s that having a good reputation as we do comes with a price!
Mauce - We've been testing, testing, testing, I rearranged the room on records day so I will be introducing new equipment and we will really tackle journals and our new word wall.
AP~ - Agh! I guess my addition symbol isn't working.
jeri-gr1 - We do State testing too!!
Paulie - wow what a challenge meeha
JenTX - I miss the good old days of choosing my themes 7 really immersing my kids in good instruction. Now, they want my kinders reading by the end of the year. I'm trying my best
Paulie - they don't make the addition symbol in this chat room
jeri-gr1 - WE do SAXON!! K-4, Mcgraw hill 5
AP~ - Any ideas on how to teach second graders economic concepts like opportunity cost and capital resources?
Mauce - We will be working on addition and subtraction. I want to do more with snow once we get some more.
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- I've done it before ... the ladies I work with are absolutely superb ... the four of us together work quite well with parents and accomplish what we reach for!
jeri-gr1 - In Ct they are suppose to be reading at the end of K!!
Paulie - I think if kids are ready to read in K that is ok that is why I like BB
JenTX - do you like saxon. I did it 4 yrs ago in 1st & didn't like it
Paulie - great meeha
Paulie - I have always had soem reading well in end of K but not all
jeri-gr1 - I HATE IT!!! not Dev APPROPRIATE!!!
JenTX - Thank you. I AGREE
meeha/ece/tx - AP -- I can't really help you in that area ... economics is NOT my strong-suit!
jeri-gr1 - I provide enrichment with Math centers and other tricks
Paulie - Mauce at least u ahd some snwo already we haven't had any and last year it was jan 21 for first snowfall and that date is long gone now
JenTX - Paulie, what number would SOME be? This is my first year in K
AP~ - Oh, well. Maybe I'll post my question on one of the boards.
Mauce - Meeha, i think you will do well whatever you do and I think that when you teach adults you will remember the little kids and encourage adults to treat them as children not little adults.
Paulie - I have never heard good things about Saxon math
JenTX - You either love Saxon or you hate it
meeha/ece/tx - Jen -- at a literacy training last night one pre-k teacher came in with papers her kiddos did one day -- her principal demands that ALL children in her class draw a picture and print the word EVERY DAY in her classroom! Poor babies ...
Paulie - jen I don't understand your question (what number would SOME be?)
JenTX - What question AP
jeri-gr1 - We are getting ready to give it the ax!!!
AP~ - That's what I've heard in regards to Saxon. What about Singapore Math?
meeha/ece/tx - Thank you, Mauce ... I hope I always remember that!
Mauce - I'm not sure if I am much help either, AP. We really don't do much with economics.
AP~ - My econ question.
JenTX - How many would you say are reading at the end of the year. You said some ....
Paulie - I think in K you should just have great manipulatives
Paulie - the teacher do their own math according to stanmdards for K
jeri-gr1 - It helped unify our district in being competent in teaching math
Paulie - oic about 2/3 basic readign and 5 or 6 kids reading quite well independantly
meeha/ece/tx - I think in K kiddos should be taking field trips, singing songs, listening to books, chanting nursery rhymes, and PLAYING!
jeri-gr1 - jen, last year out of 18 I had 14 reading
JenTX - We used to do our own math according to standards also & I loved Math Their Way
jeri-gr1 - jen, last year out of 18 I had 14 reading
Mauce - AMEN! Meeha.
Paulie - and movement too
AP~ - You are so lucky Mauce. Our whole ss. curriculum revolves around teaching the geography of Lansing, the history of Lansing, the economics of Lansing and one more. It is sooooo hard to teach especially when we have no resources
JenTX - Wow, jeri.
meeha/ece/tx - Oh, yes, coloring * cutting * painting * gluing * running * climbing * .....
Mauce - Lots of messy art projects too
JenTX - Lots of movement, because they do it so naturally
jeri-gr1 - FED GOV says NO TIME!!! MUST FORCE THEM TO GROW UP!!!
JenTX - No Nap! No playing! No recess! No centers!
Paulie - and kids that only go to school to learn to take tests never develop a love of learnign so they never exercise their brains besides what is required of them to pass
jeri-gr1 - teaching 1st right now! I have 5 reading end of 2nd, 6 reading middle of second, 4 grade level and 3 below grade level
meeha/ece/tx - jeri -- we're paying for this forced blooming of children ... in premature puberty, teen pregnancies, poor grades/school failure, drop-out rates, murder & suicide, depression .....
JenTX - And they get turned off in school earlier & earlier now, Paulie
Mauce - Our SS curriculum is in the works right now. We have a standard for "goods and services" but until we get the revisions done we are not expected to do it.
Paulie - jeri sounds good to me they catch up by 3rd gr usually
AP~ - jeri what do you use to measure their reading grade level?\
Paulie - amen Jen
JenTX - Our distrcit is working on a social studies framework, too
Paulie - meeha the politicians don't care
JenTX - We use the TPRI & the DRA
jeri-gr1 - Running record, and Developmental REading assesment, Concepts of Print assement
AP~ - Politicians are all about talk!
Mauce - We are building a house on a very shaky foundation.
Paulie - in K we ahd a standard about concepts of print
JenTX - That's what we had last year, jeri. Loved it. Then, we got the TPRI
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- the pendulum seems to swing back and forth ... now it seems to be at an extreme end -- maybe it will begin the return sweep soon and we can get back to the business of teaching children (not politician's pork barrel legislation!)
JenTX - It is a sand foundation
Paulie - t o know fron and back of book the title page has two things on it, the writing of wrods fo from left to write ane top to botom to read and that is it
jeri-gr1 - I love the CAP!! except that I think it tricks K kids
AP~ - Do you feel those specific test rate the kids on the high side. I find that the same kids that our RR teacher say are on grade level or even above, still struggle with the Houghton-Mifflin reading tests.
Paulie - sigh I can't type when I am trying to write fast
jeri-gr1 - Especially with the no child left behind ac!!!!
JenTX - I remember the developmental testing we did the last 5 or 6 yrs & I have that in the back of my mind when I teach
Paulie - wht is CAP?
Mauce - I was just trained in DRA, we use MLPP in Michigan, it must be like your TPRI
Paulie - o that concepts of print?
JenTX - Is that the CAP with Stones?
jeri-gr1 - Concepts of Print by Mare Clay
Paulie - maybe not
meeha/ece/tx - Probably so, Mauce.
JenTX - That's the one we USED to use.
Paulie - should that not be COP then lol
jeri-gr1 - Yep and MOON
meeha/ece/tx - I'll be back in a minute ... daughter just got home, need to run chat with her.
Mauce - I did CAP with "Sand" now we use other leveled books
Paulie - c u soon meeha
JenTX - It's CAP. Concepts about print or concepts of print. We always said concepts of print
jeri-gr1 - lol true!! I don't make it up I just test them
AP~ - Bye meeha!
Mauce - CAP = Concepts About Print
Paulie - wonder where milymo is tonight?
Paulie - oh I call if concepts OF print
JenTX - I teach many of the concepts of print using the morning message
Paulie - what is MOON?
JenTX - bye meeha
jeri-gr1 - I think that it is a little distrusting to the little ones. here they are expecting you to read them a story and WHAM!!! you ask them lots of questions
Mauce - bye Meeha
Paulie - each time I read a book we talked about the front and back, the author and illustrator and the pictures
jeri-gr1 - moon is another CAP book
JenTX - The high ones think the mistakes are funny in the book
Paulie - oic gosh we used any and all books for that
jeri-gr1 - True!! I had one tell me I better write a letter to the illustrator! and tell them about the mistake
Paulie - mistake of what?
JenTX - Today in guided reading, we talked about the front, back, title page, fiction & non-fiction
Mauce - a page is upside down
Paulie - o right we did fiction and non too
jeri-gr1 - how the pictures are upside down, words reversed and spelled wrong
Paulie - on purpose it is upside down?
JenTX - The mistakes like when the picture is upside down. Or print lines are reverse.
jeri-gr1 - yes thats the assesment,, can they notice these things
JenTX - That is so neat about the illustrator remark, jeri
jeri-gr1 - your assessing do they have the CONCEPTS needed to understand PRINT!!!
Paulie - wow never heard of that we used real books
AP~ - Mauce....What grade do you teach again?
JenTX - The assessment gives you feedback on what to teach during shared reading & writing, guided rdg, etc
jeri-gr1 - funny!! huh!! clever!!! Yes these are specific testing booklets, the new RAVE in New ENgland
Mauce - Kdg - two sessions - AM and PM
Paulie - oic well anythign to make a buck gee you could just hold the book upside down
jeri-gr1 - I do read reall books to my class, these are just assessment tools
Paulie - Mauce . . . never got yoru package. . .
AP~ - Is there a push for full day k in your district?
jeri-gr1 - lol! my thoughts exactly!!
Paulie - I know but I don't find those assessment tools necessary
Mauce - There is a whole text to what you say and how you hand the book to the child also, Paulie. It's really kinda interesting to do.
Paulie - I loved teaching all day K my first year
jeri-gr1 - We are full K in my district
JenTX - This is a good assessment tool though, Paulie. It is time consuming, but woth it
Paulie - Mauce we did all that with a natural book
jeri-gr1 - Actually they are extremely useful!! gives you teaching points and allows you to see where they are developmentally! giving less push to the district for reading!@
JenTX - We are full k also. Have been for a long time
Paulie - well we never had that when i was teaching K we had to do our own thing
JenTX - One thin with the assessment is that it is consistent across the district, Paulie
Paulie - <=====would liek to find an all day K position again
jeri-gr1 - now it is 11:00 and the alarm comes early! especially if my son decides not to sleep through the night
Paulie - ok
Paulie - jeri come back when u can any Tues
JenTX - good night jeri. hope he sleeps
Mauce - good night, jeri see you soon!
jeri-gr1 - ME TOOO!!!!!! Thanks for chatting!! I will try!! If I am not tired, or have to much homeword
jeri-gr1 - bye!!!
Paulie - short break would be good jeri
Paulie - nite jeri
AP` - Got disconnected
AP` - Wanted to log back on to say good night.
JenTX - me too , you guys, I'm going to bed
Paulie - oic u have to go too?
Paulie - nite AP and jen see you next week
Mauce - I should go too, reports have to be done tomorrow
AP` - Night!
Paulie - nite Mauce
meeha/ece/tx - I'm back!
JenTX - good nigh all. see you next time. enjoyed it
Mauce - bye, Jen and AP see you soon!
Paulie - I guess I don't want to talk to myself either
Paulie - I will say good night also
meeha/ece/tx - Sorry ... gotta check with the teenagers when they're about!
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, all.
Paulie - o are u staying meeha?
Paulie - everyone else is leaving
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- I can s tay for a bit.
Paulie - ok then I won't go yet
meeha/ece/tx - cool!
Paulie - what cha want to discuss?
Mauce - I'm still here - I should go but I 'm so-o-o-o-o tired of report cards
Paulie - barely 8 here
meeha/ece/tx - I'm going to be slow for a minute or two, but I"m here.
Paulie - Mauce u are too funny
Paulie - Mauce did you get your IMessenger yet?
Mauce - Without a sense of humor I'd go nuts!
Paulie - Mauce when are your report cards due?
Paulie -
Mauce - Cards are due to principal tomorrow
Paulie - o no
Paulie - how many more u got to do?
Mauce - IM had to wait. got stuck with report cards, Jr Prom, family, etc.
Paulie - Is that all?
meeha/ece/tx - Mauce -- I'm so fortunate ... don't have to do cards to principal ... just send 'em home!
Paulie - lol
Mauce - I'm working on the comments
Paulie - with your double sessions I would think u would get a longer time to do them
Paulie - when I taught K my first year of ful time teaching I had to develop the report card myslef
Paulie - I cam e up witha 4 page one!
meeha/ece/tx - Let's see, Mauce ... double the students, assessment has to be completed 1 on 1 ... WIDE areas of assessment ... same due date as all other grades -- do I have it right?
Paulie - good thing I only had an average of 15 kids
Paulie - unfair huh meeha?
Mauce - We had time to work on them last Friday but I cleaned and reorganized my room instead. I'll get them done, I always do. I just won't write as many comments.
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- it may be, but it "is what it is" ...
Paulie - and she probably has to enter it all on the computer too
Mauce - Not on computer yet. Just on NCR paper.
meeha/ece/tx - It would be SO much faster for me on c omputer ... mine all have to be done on 'puter -- BUT the only copy of my program is on the school's computer -- HAS to be done in my classroom!!!
Paulie - o
meeha/ece/tx - and after I copy them I get to go to the workroom and make copies! (cheaper than running duplicate copies ... and I have to mark some areas by hand, anyhow.
Paulie - so much fun
Mauce - I make more work for myself because I enclose a checklist to the parents of things them can do to help at home.
meeha/ece/tx - Mauce -- that day between semesters is really important to getting the new semester off to a good start, isn't it?
Mauce - Sure is, Meeha, I want to start with new ideas.
Mauce - I've had a lot of kids out sick so this week has been spent testing those who were out.
meeha/ece/tx - I came in, told my TA's what I'd thought about and how I wanted to change the schedule ... they agreed ... we've had SUCH improvements in behavior this term (so far, anyhow!)
Paulie - Mauce that is really neat!
Paulie - great meeha
Mauce - I'll take pictures to send to you Paulie and Meeha as soon as I get a few more things set up.
meeha/ece/tx - I give them an idea and they take it and run with it! My lesson plans are REALLY general -- they have learned to go with the kiddos at their individual levels, which is -- after all -- what special education is all about! Every kiddo is engaged, no one really has time to get into trouble anymore!!
Paulie - great always enjoy your photos
Paulie - I wish you would ahve sent your class photos to Tnet tho
Mauce - I'm also starting with my parent volunteers in February so I'm getting things ready for them. Some will work in the room on Fridays. Some will work at home making materials for the class.
Paulie - great meeha
meeha/ece/tx - I look forward to seeing it, Mauce. Tell me, does your room have windows? (((We have a skinny one -- to the hallway -- in our door)))
Paulie - great mauce
Paulie - lol does her room have indows hehehehe
Paulie - a triangular room
Mauce - We have one window by the fire escape door and a window on the door to the hallway. The rest is cement block.
Mauce - Oh, and the collapsable wall that makes my room a triangle.
meeha/ece/tx - cement block ... exciting stuff to work with ... you've discovered bulldog hangers, right?
Paulie - wht are bulldog ahngers?
meeha/ece/tx - they are little white plastic hangers with four short brads in the back of the disc toward the top --work on concrete/cement walls!
Mauce - I do a lot with sticky tac and push cabinets against the walls. Then I stick things on the cabinets.
Paulie - o
meeha/ece/tx - ..... and they don't mar the wall up too terribly badly!
Paulie - someone told me they used glue gun for laminated stuff on concrete
meeha/ece/tx - E-Z Up Clips (little clips with wax on the backs ... reuseable) aren't too bad, either.
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie, I've heard that, too.
Paulie - I don't liek thpse clips much the papers fall out
Mauce - There's really not much wall space left. I'll send pictures, Meeha.
Mauce - I use E-Z Up clips too.
Paulie - I am making a website of my walking treks
Paulie - n walking almost everyday in the new year for exercise I ahve some beautiful waterfront pictures
Mauce - Send me a link, Paulie. I like your web sites.
Mauce - Hi, Joy!
Paulie - doing this with a first gr group of teachers from T net
Paulie - Mauce I only got 6 photos on so far will give you later when I ahve more up
Paulie - thanks Mauce
joy - walking for you or the kids?
Mauce - Do you live near each other? How did you meet?
Paulie - I just been in a funk and not getting a whole lot done around here . . . if it would snow I would feel so much better
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie ... sometimes they work for me, others they don't
Paulie - noep it is from the first gr mailring
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- wander up to BC and the mountains some weekend ... enjoy the snow!
Paulie - we made a special site on yahoo and we right letters to each other each night to encourage each other to not give up
Paulie - I wish I could I don't drive
Paulie - heck I take pictures of mt Hood covered with snow (Oregon) down by the Columbia river can't get there either
meeha/ece/tx - No train service out of your area, Paulie?
Paulie - meeha this is my 2nd year of no job I can't afford to go
Paulie - yes we have trains
Mauce - Math problem - If Paulie walks 20 miles per day, how long will it take to get to Meeha's house?, to Mauces's house? Extra credit - how much snow would she see on the way?
meeha/ece/tx - sorry ... I understand the $$$ issues!
Paulie - lol I walked just under 9 miles the other day I would take forever to get there
Paulie - I am doing a cyber trek tho traveling from jan Brett's hoem in Mass to Patricia Pollaco in Michigan
meeha/ece/tx - you'll get to Mauce's house faster than meeha's ... let's see ... maybe 160 days to Mauce ..... 180 to meeha ??? whaddaya think, Mauce?
Paulie - lol
Paulie - in western WA
meeha/ece/tx - sounds interesting, paulie.
Paulie - I have to add up my miles and see if I got our of mass. yet lol
Paulie - joy say soemthing
Paulie - just jump right in
meeha/ece/tx - WELL ... I think it is about bedtime for me ... Mauce -- good luck with the progress reports!
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite ... hope to see you again next week.
Paulie - nite meeha
Paulie - see u next Tues
Mauce - This time for sure - I must go - son wants the computer and my report cards are calling me bye all!
Paulie - bye mauce see u Tues
Paulie - Joy are u here?
Paulie - well next tiem I hope you will jsut chime in
Paulie - I guess I will go too sicne I don't talk to myself too much (they say that is a habit of people with money in the bank and i don't have any so)
