Grace/IL - Hi Terry. I'm here for the primary chat also.
Grace/IL - Let's get reacquainted. I'm retired from first grade. Paulie and Terri, where are you?
Grace/IL - Lucy
Terri F. - hi all
Terri F. - I'm a K teacher in Bakersfield, Ca.
lucy - hello everyone
lucy - sp. needs preschool 5 yr. olds
Paulie - bak Iam in Vancouver WA not teaching this year looking for a job after moving back here from teaching in CA 6 years
Grace/IL - Paulie, you taught first, didn't you?
Paulie - <---taught all day K, first, 2nd, two yers of half day K two sessions a day, and 4th gr
Paulie - I like to keep up with what is happening in first even when I teach K cause then I know how far to take my kids
Grace/IL - What do all of you think is necessary to teach letters and sounds to K?
Grace/IL - I ask because I'm trying to put together a K manual for my Spel-Lang series.
Terri F. - do you materials or activity ideas for alphabet?
Paulie - you need to do the sounds and letters together first before expecting them to write it
Paulie - but it si good to have motions with them too
Terri F. - I would say to start with lowercase alphabet using short vowel sounds and hard consonant sounds. A "hook" or motion is usually helpful most especially with lower students. Several sets of flashcards to be used in centers, by teacher, in pocket charts
Carol/pre K/WI - Hi everyone
Paulie - and don't do letter of the week
Grace/IL - So far -- a sound/symbol chart; explanation of how sounds are formed in the mouth (for those who need a bit of help); letter cards for tracing letters so they learn correct form; some extension of sound/symbol representations.
Grace/IL - I absolutely agree, Paulie. Review the whole thing daily.
Terri F. - I agree with no LOW, used shared reading, children's names, etc... (I use building blocks) for letter recognition and beginning sound practice
Grace/IL - But it might help to do further work on certain letters.
Grace/IL - For example, teach 'a' first, then possibly 'm' and one can write 'am.'
Terri F. - I would die without magnetic letters- I use them alot with name practice in the beginning of the year and sight words as the year goes on
Paulie - I liek t second and make at
Grace/IL - I don't want to get into the literature issue because new stories are always being written for early childhood.
Paulie - because you can make lots of other words with the at family
Paulie - I like tying in literature
Grace/IL - I'd probably go with 'n' third, then 't' but that's a personal choice. I like 'm' and 'n' because they're continuants. Kids can stretch the sounds.
Terri F. - I'd like to do that too, but I am required (forced) to use the HM series, leaving me little time to add in anything else
Grace/IL - I think I'd leave the literature issue open for teachers to choose.
Terri F. - brb.....
Terri F. - ok, needed caffine
Grace/IL - "am" is such a great word because kids can start to write, "I am _____."
Grace/IL - buckeye. Are you kdg also?
Terri F. - oops, hit the wrong button
Terri F. - buckeye, what grade do you teach?
buckeye - hi all i think i came in the middle of a discussion

Tina/TX/Pre-k - Hey!
Mauce - Hi Tina
Paulie - Our governor had a wonderful response
Jackie - your governor's response?????
Paulie - I agreed where he disagreed with Bush
Paulie - and usually the response is by a congressional member
Paulie - neat to ahve it by our governor
Paulie - wish he could be president lol
Tina/TX/Pre-k - How is everyone tonight
Jackie - thought it should have been more reactive to the actual sppech and not so prescripted! They always are, though!
Jackie - speach
Jackie - speech....it is getting late
Cheryl/NH - Hi Tina
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Hello Cheryl
Paulie - He was given the focus of what Buish would/might say and had to respond to that
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Did I walk into a tense subject?
Cheryl/NH - Did we miss a lot of people from the chat earlier?
Mauce - I'm fine. How are you, Tina? Has it been a difficult week for you? Where in Texas are you?
Paulie - nope we were just talking about tv
Paulie - bring up any thing u want to
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I'm late...had to get the kiddos to bed
Cheryl/NH - No Tina...they are talking about their governor's response to the state of the union address.
Jackie - Just a friendly discussion about the presient's speech and the WA governor response!
Cheryl/NH - Same here Tina.
Paulie - only two ro three people left from earlier more will come yet
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Paulie, found a great fundraiser to get my laminator
Cheryl/NH - Oh....so most of us are night people I see!
Jackie - see ya all!!!!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - LOL...Just can't get it off my mind
Paulie - hi Tina (think I missed u)
Tina/TX/Pre-k - e Jackie
Cheryl/NH - Nite Jackie
Paulie - nite jackie
Paulie - Tina what funraiser did u get?
Mauce - nite Jackie
Tina/TX/Pre-k - No you said hi...but were in the middle of something
Paulie - o
Tina/TX/Pre-k - The parents and other members of the community turn in used ink cartidges and cell phones for cash
Paulie - so what fundraiserr?
Paulie - oic will that bring in a lot?
Cheryl/NH - My daughters school is doing that as well!
Mauce - What do you do with them?
Paulie - How do you get information to do that?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Oh? Does it seem to be a good idea?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Well, it seems like it
Paulie - I heard about the print cartridges but never cell phones for anything but for abused women
Tina/TX/Pre-k - www.fundingfactory.com
Cheryl/NH - I'm not really sure how it works....the newsletter said they are collecting cell phones this month...I had never heard of it before.
Paulie - I don't know what did they promise u?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - They rpovide all shipping boxes. prepaid for you to send them back to them and the pay you for each depending on the kind
Cheryl/NH - Her school has raised over 5600 points so far.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - of ceel phone or cartridge
Paulie - what are the points for?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - You can buy things off their site with points or they will pay you cash
Cheryl/NH - That's what I'm not sure about.
Cheryl/NH - Oh, now I see.
Cheryl/NH - Their goal is to purchase compters and cameras.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - It's worth a try
Paulie - I wrote the site down will ahve to look can anyone do this?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I hate selling stuff
Mauce - Can any group do this? My son's high school band is always looking for ways to raise cash.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Yes
Paulie - hmmmmmmmmm then why don't all schools collect them?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - It really seems like a easy fund raiser, just in teacher alone I have over 20 cell phones already
Mauce - I've sold so many pizzas I can hardly stand to eat them anymore
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I think it may be new...not sure
Cheryl/NH - LOL, me too Tina. I guess you can try to get local businesses to join in as well and they can call and register listing themselves as a sponsor for your school (I guess you would get credit for their donations as well)
Tina/TX/Pre-k - LOL...Mauce
Paulie - do the cell phones have to be in working order and how do you get the cell charges off that phone?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Yes...then we plan to provide a pizza (sorry Mauce) party if we reach our monthly goal
Cheryl/NH - LOL Mauce. I have one in marching band as well....car washes, ad book sales, the dreaded "lets gain pounds upon pounds on chocolate bars before Christmas" etc!
Paulie - Is there a certain type of printer cartridges?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Well, so many people change cell phones now. When a new company offers a better deal then you can't use that phone anymore
Paulie - I have never thrown any of mine away in all these years saved them in a baggie
Tina/TX/Pre-k - It will give you a list of the cartridges and phones they collect and laser cartridges as well
Paulie - ink thingies I mean not cell phones lol
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I figure we can collect and sort them out at the end of each month
Mauce - We've done pizza kits, cookie dough, flowers, my favorite is the discount card that gets you money off at local businesses.
Cheryl/NH - What is your goal Tina?
Paulie - what do u collect them in so the ink does not get all over there is always some still in the cartridges
Cheryl/NH - Mauce....me too! I LOVE that card! We are on a first name basis with the Dominoes guy!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Actually about 3000...we need two new carpet (thise come first) playground equipment and if there's enough a laminator
Paulie - so ahve you picked out your laminator Tina?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I don't know...Maybe I need to ask them to enclosed them in baggies...I have received my boxes yet
Paulie - o ok
Cheryl/NH - Tina, are you in a private or public preschool?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - No, any suggestions
Tina/TX/Pre-k - private
Paulie - nope lots fo different laminators around cold and hot and automatic roll and hand rpess ones
Cheryl/NH - Oh, so trying to get local businesses to help may really help you to reach your goal.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I guess when I see what's left I'll go from there
Cheryl/NH - I have one but it is only 9X11" (hot laminator)...a larger one would be nice!
Paulie - Go to city ahll and the school district probably lots of ink cartridges also the library
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Yes! I'm targeting real estate offices, lawyers and doctor offices...I figure they use alot
Cheryl/NH - Do you have a Kinkos around?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Good Idea!
Mauce - We just got a new one. I don't know the brand but it has a guard across to keep your fingers off the rollers and it helps to keep the heat in so the film sticks better.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Yep...maybe them too! Thanks for the hint
Tina/TX/Pre-k - That's the kind I want...I would also like a small ellison cutter
Cheryl/NH - Also, local college campuses (especially if they have a computer lab AND an ECE program...they'd make a great sponsor!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I don't want much huh?
Paulie - love die cuts
Paulie - but when u have one u always want new more cuts and it never quits
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Good idea!
Cheryl/NH - LOL....go Big Tina....why limit yourself!!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I'm with you Paulie...I could die cut all day
Tina/TX/Pre-k - That's my way!!!!
Mauce - I love our ellison cutter. did you know that they now make one that is sold at craft stores? I've seen them at Michael's.
Paulie - I used to do die cuts waiting for my car pool and I have lots in baggies to this day
Mauce - 't know the quality but it looks a lot like the one we have at school.
Cheryl/NH - Sorry.....what are die cuts?
Cheryl/NH - Sounds like it could be a new addiction!
Paulie - o really I will ahve to look at our Michaels I know in CA they used ot have a scrapbooking place called mtrs. Anderson's and you could use the die cut free f you bought their papers
Paulie - shapes
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I'm trying to find one like that Mauce... Can't seem to find one...Found one on E Bay but by the time I pay shipping I can buy a new one
Paulie - cut on a machine
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Punky Doodles... Is the name brand we use down here
Paulie - to see what they are go to ellison.com and get a good picture
Mauce - die cuts are like cookie cutters that you put into a machine that has a lever. You move the lever to push the die onto a piece of paper to cut out the shape of the die. They are wonderful
Cheryl/NH - so you can make pattern block die cuts and not have to copy black line masters, photo copy, blah, blah , blah??
Paulie - some die cut machiens have a roller others you just press and cut
Cheryl/NH - I will....thanks Paulie
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Gosh I hate to cut with scissors, but I would love to be able to make centers with these
Paulie - yes they do have the oens for pattern blocks
Paulie - heck IN K we used them for counting books
Cheryl/NH - OMG....I must be living in the dark here in NH!!
Paulie - the mini apples were great for a 1-10 counting book
Cheryl/NH - I still get excited about my laminator!!!
Paulie - I cut out letters from the die cuts too
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I bet you have seen them, just didn't relize that what they are
Paulie - you use letters for bulletin baords and all no more tracing and cutting
Mauce - the Ellison Company makes hundreds of dies that you can buy that fit the machine. There are two sizes of machines to fit the large and small dies
Tina/TX/Pre-k - OH>>>>THE SHEAR THOUGHT MAKE ME WANT ONE!!!!!
Paulie - also you can fold your paper jsut so and make like a werth of the same die cut
Paulie - lol
Cheryl/NH - WOW ! My head is going to explode...let me back up, where is that Funding Factory number again!! LOL
Cheryl/NH - (JK...I have the number and website!)
Paulie - in one school I taught we ahd a different die cut machine It rolled your die cuts thru a space and cut them one at a time
Tina/TX/Pre-k - www.fundingfactory.com
Cheryl/NH - STOP, STOP! NO more info! lOL
Cheryl/NH - I want one, I want one
Mauce - I make bees for my "Superbee" (leader) birthday cakes for birthdays, letters for bulletin boards, photo frames, and many other shapes for school and also for scrapbooking at home.
Paulie - lol
Tina/TX/Pre-k - LOL
Paulie - and birthday cakes for birthdays
Paulie - and frogs for books
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Oh , I would be in heaven
Cheryl/NH - Tina, and you said you hate selling things!!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - So, I take it you have one Paulie and Mauce
Mauce - AND you can even cut foam meat trays or thin sponges to make center activities.
Paulie - did where I taught rememebr I don't have a job this year
Tina/TX/Pre-k - What about fun foam?
Paulie - and can cut felt
Paulie - to make the color bear or ghost stories
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Oh...is that a good thing or a bad thing Paulie?
Mauce - I don't have one but our staff convinced the Parent Club to buy one for us. We did a fundraiser last year to raise money for more dies
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Oh gosh...may have to increase my goal to include dies!!!LOL
Paulie - not having a job is not good but I moved and have not been agressive
Cheryl/NH - Then you could decorate the bulletin board, send out invitations (die cut in pizza shapes of course), napkins, etc...for your pizza party!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - There you go!
Cheryl/NH - OR...have a die cutting party...all the parents get to come in and try it and all your things get cut out for you!!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Well, get going sister! JK!
Mauce - The dies can be expensive - most cost at least $25 but they do have some "packages" like seasonal dies that area better value.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Where is Jeanne tonight?Cheryl you are on a roll
Tina/TX/Pre-k - But I think in the long run it would be worth buying one
Mauce - Since you are a private school, could you somehow tie it into a way parents could use it at the school (don't let it leave the building) to make things for scrapbooks? They might be willing to buy a die or two if they could use the machine.
Cheryl/NH - Good idea Mauce!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Yes!
Cheryl/NH - Well all...I need to finish glueing on some bottles to our igloo and then go to bed
Mauce - It is an investment but it is worth the money. You can use it so many ways.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Good Luck Cheryl! Have agreat night!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I agree!
Cheryl/NH - It was great meeting you all....I hope to chat with you again soon!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Come back next week
Mauce - bye Cheryl - nice talking to you
Cheryl/NH - I'll try...probably be late again!!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Better late then never
Cheryl/NH - Nitey, nite!
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Paulie....I hope I did offend you
Mauce - I just remembered. I have a question. While I was cleaning my art cabinet last week I ran across some old dry tempera paint that the teacher before me left behind. It is still good. We now use premixed paint. I was wondering. does anyone have an idea that used dry paint?
Paulie2 - darn I missed Cheryl talking about her igloo
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I know you can sprinkle it on paper and put the paper out in the rain
Paulie2 - just mix with water it keeps forever dry
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Good Paulie...I thought I made you mad
Paulie2 - nope cursor was tempermental wehn i got an Im too
Tina/TX/Pre-k - You can also toss it in a bag with popcorn and it colors the popcorn
Paulie2 - well cher did not stay long
Paulie2 - why don't u want to use it like paint? put the paing in something disposable and then toss after the kids use it
Tina/TX/Pre-k - No...she didn't
Mauce - Good ideas - I knew I could count on you! I was thinking of sprinkling it onto wet paper to watch the colors bleed. Now I have several ideas. Thanks
Paulie2 - I like using the dry tempra
Paulie2 - sprinking causes mess on hands
Tina/TX/Pre-k - We buy liquid in gallon jugs and they are a pain to use
Paulie2 - l you sprinkle with
Paulie2 - What will
Paulie2 - I prefer the dry paint
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Do either of you know the story of when letter Q married letter U?
Paulie2 - mix what you want and toss it afterwards
Paulie2 - have that story soemwhere BUT you can put that in google.com and find it faster
Mauce - I was thinking of using old glitter bottles with the holes in the top to keep it off their hands.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Really? What would I type in?
Mauce - I don't know that story, sorry.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Or seasoning bottles would work
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I have a million of those. One thing the parents do contribute is recycables
Tina/TX/Pre-k - W are making discovery bottles now
Mauce - I'm the building pack rat. Parents are always sending in things that are "too good to throw away". Whenever anyone needs egg cartons, toilet paper tubes, paper plates, etc. they know the place to go. lol
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I found a great list of them on Dr. Jean's website
Tina/TX/Pre-k - LOL...Me too.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - never throw anything away
Tina/TX/Pre-k - never throw anything awayOourse everyone come to me for ideas to use with them too.
Mauce - I've considered making discovery bottles but I don't know where I would store them. My room is small.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - That's a problem with me too...My room is large but I have to take all my stuff out of the room when I leave so the afternoon class doesn't mess it up
Tina/TX/Pre-k - he afternoon teacher doesn't seem to take care of other people things
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I invested in a cart to store all my belongings, and I just roll it out into my office
Mauce - That's too bad. I am very protective of my things - I'll loan them to anyone but I expect them to take care of my things.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Me too, especially when you put your time into making them
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I'm trying to build up a center collection for every month...but they afternoon class all but destroy Decembers centers
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Live and learn I guess
Paulie3 - I can't find it on google or on my hard drive sorry maybe it is in the lesson bank
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Your back!
Mauce - Paulie, is your computer acting up again?
Tina/TX/Pre-k - That's ok...I'll lokk for it in the AM...I don't need it until Friday...Thanks for looking though
Paulie3 - no I jsut don't know how to leave her eand check internet and staye here too
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Me either
Paulie3 - I bet it is in Tnet lesson plans
Mauce - I have parents help make things. The kids are very good about taking care of the things their parents helped to make.
Tina/TX/Pre-k - I'll check there
Paulie3 - some night it does give me problems -- this site not my computer
Paulie3 - Mauce tell me about the angel I forgot why u sent me that
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Hmmmm. I might try that
Mauce - Belated Christmas gift - that package kept missing the post office for over a month
Paulie3 - Is the angel something yoru kids made?
Paulie3 - I wonder what happened to Meeha and milymo tonight?
Mauce - I got it at the church bazaar where I grew up.
Mauce - I got it at the church bazaar where I grew up.
Mauce - I got it at the church bazaar where I grew up.

Paulie3 - Meeha said she would come the 2nd hr
Tina/TX/Pre-k - Thanks!!! Good Idea...BRB
Paulie3 - Mauce the movement paper is great

Paulie3 - I have only read 25 pages
Paulie3 - I will give you comments when I finish
Mauce - I have tried to use some of the ideas but I need training to make it work better.

Paulie3 - things in environment
Clue - oh...thought u meant something here on puter.......lol
Bird - hello
Clue - good idea.......
Paulie3 - at and the kids naems should be on your K word wall to help them learn words and be familiar sith letters
Paulie3 - that
Clue - how did u use environmental print?
Paulie3 - with letters
Bird - Print Rich Environment
Paulie3 - I asked the kdis to all bring in an empty wrapper or box or ad from newspaper or magazine
Paulie3 - en we talked about what each said
Paulie3 - just the main name
Paulie3 - and then taped it or stapled to a baord
Paulie3 - dis could point to and read them in center time
Bird - Label everything!
Bird - library, books, table, toys, books, etc bathroom everything is labeled
Clue - yes. we label
Paulie3 - Bird that is aprt of a print rich environment u can also label thigns in the class liek door,, sindow, wall, baord, desk, table, chair
Paulie3 - sinck etcv but that is not environmental print
Bird - i can't follow this chat for anything
Paulie3 - enviro print are the things kids see printed in grocery stores, as you walk down the street and stuff liek that
Bird - i have to go write an email
Bird - byeee
Clue - bye bird
Paulie3 - different than labeling
Paulie3 - and if you have a word wall with each letter of the alphabet and put their names on it under the proper beginnign sound they will elarn
Clue - .well........technically, it's all environmental
Paulie3 - no because the signs u make aren't usually there
Paulie3 - but the box of cheerios is always there int he sotre and on yoru shelf
Paulie3 - and so is the stop sign
Clue - it's part of their classroom environment
Paulie3 - and for the names baord
Paulie3 - ou should then take the beginning sound off and use it with another letter LIKE this
Paulie3 - Paulie
Paulie3 - baulie, caulie daulie, faulie etc so they see jsut the begiiing phoneme changes
Paulie3 - nonesense words to su
Clue - sounds good
Paulie3 - it is ok because it is the sound you need to teach not the letter
Paulie3 - and for forming letters fi they have prob
Clue - OC does some of that
Paulie3 - I think Bird forgot to log out
Paulie3 - you could use salt in a tray they use their fingers to make them
Clue - well.........i need to do some email, and other stuff.......
Clue - so.....bye for now
Paulie3 - or finger paint on their desk or shaving cream
Paulie3 - ok bye
Clue - yes..........i know about those things....
Clue - thx.........bye
