KindergartenCop - Is anyone here for ec chat?
Deb - Hello Ladies! I need 100th day coloring. Know where I can get some?
Deb - I have been looking on the web for an hour can't find a thing
KindergartenCop - Deb, use 100's chart - call out numbers and have the k's color them (DO you have K?)
meeha/ece/tx - 100th day coloring what?
KindergartenCop - I teach all day, alternate day K
Deb - No- I am a music teacher looking for her 3 year old son
Deb - I wanted something he could color and pin on
KindergartenCop - Deb, how about 10 circles with 10 of different items in each circle - makes 100
meeha/ece/tx - Could you help him lace 100 pieces of macaroni? He could wear it as a necklace. ... or could do fruit loops, etc.
meeha/ece/tx - Is tomorrow the day 100?
KindergartenCop - Meeha - the cereal one is a good one - I've had my K's do that many times
Deb - Necklace= didn't think of that
Deb - Ugh! I never should have waited until the last minute!!
KindergartenCop - Can also make a page with 10 boxes and have him use stampers to make 10 stamps in each box for 100
KindergartenCop - Has anyone made the igloo for kids out of gallon milk jugs????
meeha/ece/tx - Deb -- how about a $1 bill ... or a $100 bill? either would represent 100 "somethings"
Ret - If you want to get messy, make ten sets of handprints (pudding, paint, etc)
Deb - OOO the money thing. He has just be getting into what is money
meeha/ece/tx - KC -- I've not done it ... but have read many teachers discussions about the experience!
Deb - Not into messy right now with a 9 month old too
KindergartenCop - I have been working on the igloo for two weeks - boy, what a PAIN!! hot glue would NOT work for me!! So far, liquid nails and a caulking gun is the deal
meeha/ece/tx - KC-- don't forget ... you have to take it down when you're done!
Deb - KC- have you asked you Art teacher what might work?
meeha/ece/tx - If you look back in the archives you'll see some igloo ideas and hints in winter discussions a couple of years ago!
Deb - How about ticky tack?
KindergartenCop - No art teacher - and my husband thought it was GREAT that I was going to try and use a calking gun!!
meeha/ece/tx - seems I remember someone using wire to hold handles together!
KindergartenCop - Deb, ticky tack is an idea, but to do it, you need something that is REALLY going to hold!!
meeha/ece/tx - I'm trying to remember the address to Addie's kinder site -- she had info on the igloo there!
Deb - Plus, you would need a ton of it
KindergartenCop - meeha - I have Addie's directions, but she must be more artsy than I am
meeha/ece/tx - Ret -- are you a teacher in a private or public school? What age?
Addie/mo - hi everyone
meeha/ece/tx - there's Addie! ((((( Addie)))))
Deb - Well, ladies thanks for the GREAT ideas! My husband just got home-TTFN
Addie/mo - ((((meeha))))
meeha/ece/tx - good luck, Deb!
KindergartenCop - Oh, well, I just want to get it 6 blocks high - put a paper or wire cover and be done!! the kids think it's looking great
Addie/mo - what is the topic
meeha/ece/tx - Addie -- Kinder wants help with her igloo!
KindergartenCop - Addie - the topic is your igloo that I'm trying to make LOL
Addie/mo - I have to admit that I never actually built it I got the idea from elsewhere on the web and added it to my unit. I wish I had the opportunity to do it, but I left the classroom too soon
Addie/mo - what is the problem you are having?
meeha/ece/tx - Joyous -- do you teach? what group?
bette/tx - hello hope I can stay in here I have problems with his room'
meeha/ece/tx - (((((bette)))))
bette/tx - hello Addie, meeha, kindergarten cop
bette/tx - I saw a neat site on the chatboards to make an igloo out of milk cartons
Addie/mo - will hot glue not work?
KindergartenCop - Addie - I tried hot and low glue guns - neither worked So I'm using liquid nails in a calking gun
KindergartenCop - Hi bette, ever make the igloo???
meeha/ece/tx - Addie -- it doesn't have the holding power one would hope for ... pops apart pretty easily.
Kindernut - Hey, I just made an igloo and it worked great just with the jugs and a hot glue gun.
Addie/mo - I wonder about liquid nails, does it dry solid and hard or does it have some flexibility to it like caulk?
Kindernut - I won't be able to move it at all but it seems okay.
KindergartenCop - Addie, it has some flex, not much, but it seems the higher the wall gets, the better it stays together
KindergartenCop - Kindernut - did you glue (like) handles to handles?
meeha/ece/tx - KC -- I think I've heard that from others who have build the igloo!
Addie/mo - then maybe it is important to go ahead and build it all the way with milk cartons so that it will have more staying power
Kindernut - I have to say it is soo neat to chat here after seeing and using some of your websites. Wow!
Addie/mo - do you want to hear a funny story?
Kindernut - I tried to glue the flat sides together -
bette/tx - okay back ..hubby out of town
bette/tx - Addie what is the story?
bette/tx - hello Kindernut..have you seen Addie's site?
KindergartenCop - OK - enough from me about the igloo What is everyone doing for a Feb. home assignment? (like the Santa vacation for Jan)??
Kindernut - You bet!
Addie/mo - well, my son's girlfriend is over and her mom teaches second grade.
Addie/mo - her mom hung up a picture of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln up for presidents day.....
bette/tx - KinderCop I have book bags and if they check one out and return they get to choose a book...my parents are teenagers
kat - Hi, just finished an igloo. Used hot glue gun and about 150 milk
Addie/mo - and one of the little girls in the class asked her if that was a picture of her husband and son!!!!
bette/tx - kat is it sturdy??
bette/tx - Addie how funny
KindergartenCop - kat - did you take pictures while making it?
meeha/ece/tx - Addie -- that is TOO cute!
bette/tx - now put a picture of INsync and they know who it is
bette/tx - KinderCop I saw last yr on the chatboard someone posted pictures
meeha/ece/tx - KinderCop -- what kind of monthly assignments do you make?
KindergartenCop - Addie - good story - reminds me of when it's my BD and the K's try to guess my age!!!
Kindernut - I've gotten raves for my igloo and we will use it for our Cultural Fair - we don't have to do too much else because people seem to be in awe of the igloo.
bette/tx - Kindernut what site did you get if off?
bette/tx - KinderCop there is a site with instructions out there...try google.com
Addie/mo - yeah, my kids used to always want to know how old I was and I would never tell them, so they would guess....anything from 18 to 80!!! LOL
Kindernut - I think I could e-mail it to you. I'm sure it was Britt.?
KindergartenCop - meeha - for Nov. I sent home a Big (half on each page) turkey for the families to decorate, Dec. was a big tree, and Jan was a Santa in his long johns to dress for his vacation.
meeha/ece/tx - February is Dental Health month, Heart Health month, African-American History month ..... plus valentines' day, Presidents' Day .....
Addie/mo - LOL, bette, they would know nsync!
bette/tx - kindergarten cop I did that in private school...now in my program I am lucky they show up
Kindernut - One year a student guessed I was 7 and another 1000. Just shows their immaturity. Because some snicker when they here those guesses and others have a straight face. LOL
bette/tx - KinderCop Book bags are our big thing ....check one out and return it get a book free
meeha/ece/tx - KC -- how about doing a heart and teeth-healthy food pyramid this month?
bette/tx - meeha I was looking for a unit ...healthy food thanks
KindergartenCop - Kindernut - I would LOVE to hear your directions j_kmoney@yahoo.com OR KidWritingK - groups.yahoo
Kindernut - I just set up assignments for sharing. This month they are bringing collections and then we review the number word.
bette/tx - Addie we go to a Mexican food restaurant and they have a juke box ..we give 11 yr a 1.00 for music and she puts on Nsync
bette/tx - meeha how many students do you have now?
Kindernut - Kindergarten Cop - The igloo really was a breeze after following the simple directions.
meeha/ece/tx - could do a feelings unit and have family create "faces" on hearts ... show at least four or six different emotions/feelings
KindergartenCop - oh, meeha, a healthy food pyramid might work!! It would teach the PARENTS about healthy food, too!
bette/tx - Kindernut where did you get the directions?
meeha/ece/tx - bette -- at present I'm at 18 (19 of 20 spaces filled -- 1 is full-day)
bette/tx - meeha what about a wind unit for march any ideas?
Igloo Picture - http://teachers.net/gazette/FEB02/crafts.html Enjoy!
bette/tx - meeha and how many aides?
Kindernut - Hey, has anyone done the blubber glove experiment?
KindergartenCop - bette - for wind let the kids make paper airplanes - they LOVE it
meeha/ece/tx - kites, wind socks ... several years ago we gave kids a plastic shopping bag and had them "catch a bag of air" ... then return to the circle ... they always went to the same area to "get " their air!
bette/tx - thanks igloo picture person
Addie/mo - Kindernut, none of my kids have guessed that old or young....I always let them think that 18 or 19 is right (without really stating it). I wonder what their parents say when they go home with that tidbit? LOL
bette/tx - kindergarten ..cop I have 2-3yr olds
bette/tx - meeha that bag idea is great ....good for outside time
meeha/ece/tx - I went to a World Market this past weekend ... bought a product called ""TOUCHABUBBLES"" -- blow tiny bubbles, let them float for a few secs, then catch them on fingers, hair, clothes ... they stack, land, stay bubbles! Kids at school loved them!
bette/tx - meeha never seen those
meeha/ece/tx - paper pin wheels are good -- or could bring in plastic from home
Kindernut - Oops I got lost trying to see the igloo picture. Yes, only two students made those silly guesses as to my age and they weren't all that funny - more WHAT?
Addie/mo - we used to make paper airplanes during our transportation unit. we would have contests to see which one would fly the farthest and which one would do the most loops. it was fun.
bette/tx - meeha good idea I can make them up they could paint or color them and then I could make them into pinwheels
meeha/ece/tx - straw paintings, bubble paintings would be good for "wind" unit, too
meeha/ece/tx - ... could blow cotton balls across table with straw and with out ...
Addie/mo - the book "it looked like spilt milk" is good for straw painting if you want to incorporate a book. it doesn't really have to do with wind though.
kat - any great open ended art project for Feb. I'm being observed.
meeha/ece/tx - Maybe the old movie about the Red Balloon -- anyone remember it?
Addie/mo - except that the clouds are blown around by the wind and that is what causes them to change shape
meeha/ece/tx - kat -- what age kiddos? what theme? how long?
kat - oh, and yes we took many igloo pictures and it was very sturdy
KindergartenCop - kat, any pictures of igloo you could put on line or email?
kat - three and four, themes are dinosaur and dental health and time is about 20 minutes
myrose - hello fellow Kinder teachers
Kindernut - I'll put the igloo picture I followed onto the tnet
Kindernut - Anyone done the blubber glove experiment about whale blubber
myrose - Are we all Kindergarten in this meeting?
Addie/mo - you could let them paint with toothbrushes! that would be open-ended
meeha/ece/tx - kat -- could you provide some dino shapes and toothbrushes, paint, markers, pasta, paint, glue, glitter ... and let the kiddos go?
KindergartenCop - kat - how about make a mouth out of playdough and add teeth of ??? nuts? small beads??/ blocks??
meeha/ece/tx - Kindernut -- haven't heard about it!
kat - I don't have them home but could e-mail them to you late this week.
Addie/mo - I have seen it, but never done it
KindergartenCop - myrose, I'm K
Kindernut - As you can tell I'm desperate Ha - Just heard about it and thought I'd do it for our culture Fair
Addie/mo - I used to be K, but I am an elem assistant principal
Kindernut - You guessed it I'm K too!
KindergartenCop - kat - I would love to see the picts. My email is j_kmoney@yahoo.com
meeha/ece/tx - myrose -- I work with special needs preschoolers.
kat - I am in an integrated preschool half specials, half typically developing
Kindernut - I have 19 kinders in each class
Addie/mo - I think that you use some Ziploc bags with Crisco and somehow make it like a mitten. then you have the kids put the blubber mitten on and put their hands in ice water, one with the mitten and one without and feel the difference
myrose - At my school we have four Kinder classes, and a Special Ed "Mix" preschool class
KindergartenCop - thanks all for your help - especially the igloo info!!! have a good night and rest of the week!
Kindernut - I wondered if I could just use margarine? Do you think?
meeha/ece/tx - provide toothbrushes, floss, white paint, sand or salt ... let the kids loose with paper and your 'classroom expectations'
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite Kindergarten Cop
myrose - Kindernut, do you teach two sessions of Kinder?
meeha/ece/tx - kat -- I keep wishing for that! the only kiddos they will 'include' are at-risk (ESL, low income, sped) for kiddos under kindergarten age
Addie/mo - a fourth grade class in our building tested whether or not their dominant hand felt colder or warmer in ice water and timed how long they could leave their arms in the water. they averaged the boys and girls times and the girls were able to leave their arms in the ice water longer
Kindernut - Yes, every other day
meeha/ece/tx - Kindernut -- margarine should function about the same ... you could try it out and see what happens.
Addie/mo - kinder, you mean margarine instead of Crisco?
myrose - Do you "share teach", Kindernut?
Kindernut - Yeah You are right I should just try it - I'm being cheap because I have margarine - but not Crisco
kat - thanks for the ideas. have fun with the igloos, they are a lot of work but worth it. meeha/ec/tx - it is a great combo. they learn so much from each other!
Addie/mo - I would think that the margarine would not insulate as well, but I could be wrong
myrose - Hi Iteach, do you teach Kinder or preschool, too?
meeha/ece/tx - it just might melt faster than the Crisco
Addie/mo - true, Crisco is solid at room temperature and margarine will melt eventually at room temp.
Iteach - Kindergarten in a parochial school
Kindernut - Good point
Kindernut - But in the ice water maybe it will not be an issue? I don't know
meeha/ece/tx - Kindernut -- you might check with the school cafeteria -- they just might "spot" you two or three cups of shortening!
myrose - Are you a "Sister", Iteach?
meeha/ece/tx - (maybe even a local bakery ... you won't know until you ask!)
Kindernut - No school cafeteria here - but yes I'm sure I could purchase some - just We spend all of the budget and many things come out of my pocket anyways I'm just very short
Addie/mo - it may not be an issue
Iteach - What's all the talk about margarine?
Addie/mo - the talk is if you make those "blubber gloves" that you are supposed to put Crisco in , and you don't have Crisco, would margarine work as a substitute?
Kindernut - We are doing the Inuit for our Cultural Fair - I'm basically doing the Arctic animals ... then blubber experiment came up for my class -- I'm cheap!
Addie/mo - have you seen the polar pairs game on the net?
Kindernut - See I often run into problems because I always substitute!
Addie/mo - if you have a computer hooked to the net in your room, you could have it on this website for your visitors
Kindernut - Great idea! - I did find an arctic animal memory game that I thought I could use - but I'll check them both out!
Addie/mo - that may be the same site, I will look in my favorites and post it for you. brb
Kindernut - SUPER!
meeha/ece/tx - Kindernut ... substitutions often get us in trouble, don't they?
Kindernut - One last time Addie - I will say I loved your site when I came across it a year or so ago! And I feel like I know you and ... well I live in Sask. Canada!
Addie/mo - here it is: http://www.nmnh.si.edu/arctic/game/
Addie/mo - I am glad that you enjoy my site
Kindernut - Yes, sometimes I come up with neat things and other times ... well you just got to laugh
meeha/ece/tx - thanks, Addie!
kat - good night folks
Kindernut - Thanks - that's service!
myrose - good night kat
Addie/mo - night, kat!
meeha/ece/tx - Addie -- we've talked about your site more than once tonite -- why don't you post it here so that others who read this later can check it out!
Kindernut - Bye
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite kat! nice meeting you!
Addie/mo - okay, it is: http://www.geocities.com/athens/aegean/2221 that is the main page. if you have trouble with it, try again at the beginning of the hour. geocities limits the traffic on free sites and mine gets shut off frequently
myrose - Is there a host?
meeha/ece/tx - this evening's chat will be posted at http://www.teachers.net/archive ... or is that archives ... in a day or two -- you can return to get web sites or information if needed!
myrose - Or does everyone just discuss issues?
meeha/ece/tx - myrose -- we all had a first time! we're glad you're here! where do you teach?
Addie/mo - lately it seems that everyone just discusses what they want
meeha/ece/tx - pretty much we just meet and chat -- we're here every Tuesday evening at 9 pm Eastern Time.
myrose - I teach in Los Angeles
Kindernut - Yes, sorry I have been here only once or twice before and I just butted in with my questions.
myrose - I am lucky to be in a good school with good parents and staff
Addie/mo - myrose, that is lucky. we have a good school too with supportive parents and community, but not everyone has that!
meeha/ece/tx - Kindernut -- that is exactly what we do here! I'm glad you came ... I've learned from you!
Kindernut - Awe shucks
Addie/mo - Kindernut, I am glad you jumped in with questions too! gave us something to talk about! LOL
Addie/mo - Kindernut, you are blushing! LOL
myrose - I've taught Kindergarten and/or first grade for the last 12 years
meeha/ece/tx - myrose -- at the archive site I posted a few minutes ago you can read the meetings from many, many, many teachers.net meetings -- a powerful resource!
Addie/mo - I gotta go! L8R!
Kindernut - I must admit my mind is racing with questions because I am the only K teacher on staff and so THANKS
myrose - thanks, meeha
myrose - bye Addie...
meeha/ece/tx - Kindernut -- be sure to check out the ec and kinder chatboard and mailrings!
Kindernut - Bye Addie - my hero HA!
myrose - Do you work in a private school, Kindernut?
Kindernut - Now I am blushing - Anyways I teach at a simple K - 7 public school in Canada
myrose - Earlier you said that you teach every other day, I don't understand how that works?
Kindernut - I truly love my job and have - I teach a full day K with two groups that switch off every other day
myrose - In Canada, schools go from K to 7, that's interesting
Kindernut - Some do or they could even be a K - 12 school
myrose - Oh, I see. Do they trade off days every other week, for example, one group goes MWF, then goes TW the next week?
meeha/ece/tx - Well, I need to excuse myself -- morning comes early here! Nice meeting you both, hope you're back soon and often! (The main chatroom -- room one -- is open 24 hours a day ... nice folks in there, too! ) Have a great week.
myrose - oops, I meant TTH
Kindernut - Thanks - I see you on the tnet
myrose - bye meeha
Kindernut - Myrose what do you teach?
meeha/ece/tx - I'll be about! 'nite
myrose - I teach Kinder, excuse me for a minute
Kindernut - Where are you from? What unit are you working on now?
Kindernut - I'm just doing report cards. So I really should get to a few tonight
myrose - We are working on a unit called Finding Friends
myrose - We are also beginning to learn about all the February holidays, in America we have Valentine's Day, Lincoln and Washington Birthdays
myrose - We also do 100 days of school activities
Kindernut - Yeah we just did Groundhog's day then a cultural Fair school wide, Valentine's day
Kindernut - Sorry - but I have got to go for now. Thanks for your ideas.
myrose - Bye Kindernut
myrose - I'm going to go now, too. It's time to get the kids settled down and in bed.
myrose - Enjoy your chat, Beverly and Ttalk
