Sandy/K/MO
- Welcome everyone to March ideas :-)
Sandy/K/MO - Should
we start at the beginning and do Dr. Suess b-day 3-2 ?
Kathleen - Seuss
:-)
meeha/ece/tx - sounds
like a good plan, Sandy!
lorip123 - Is anyone
doing "Read across America?"
disney cathy - Is
anyone doing anything special for Dr. Seuss's Birthday on March 2nd?
TeachNS - We did
a unit on Dr. Seuss two weeks ago.
tyke_patrol - We
are doing our kickoff for Read
blt - we will do
seuss activities all day and have a birthday party in the evening
Sandy/K/MO - I am
going to use the websites during computer time.. and have celeb. readers
...
disney cathy - Teach,
what were some of the fun activities you did?
lorip123 - Does anyone
have a good source for Seuss activities?
Sandy/K/MO - Cooks
are going to make us green eggs and ham for lunch
blt - tomorrow we
start a trivia question each day about seuss, winners drawn each day will
get a prize, we will have a question each day thru 3/2
meeha/ece/tx - That's
nice of them, Sandy!
TeachNS - We read
Green Eggs and Ham, then we made green eggs. The kids loved it.
tyke_patrol - We
are doing our Read Across America kickoff with a Senior housing facility.
We are having a reading hour. The activity will be featured on the cover
of the local magazine!
al-IA - Any one doing
anything for women's month
blt - we also have
a fishbowl full of gummy fish in display case of library, kids guess how
many, winner from each grade gets a "cat hat"
meeha/ece/tx - one
school I subbed in a few years ago had someone dress up like the Cat in
the Hat and read to each of the primary classrooms. I think they read "Oh,
the Places You'll Go!"
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.afn.org/drseuss.html
TeachNS - For the
Foot Book we painted the kids feet and let them stomp on paper
disney cathy - oh
boy teach,I know they loved stomping their feet!!!
tyke_patrol - We
do an intergenerational activity 1x/month
blt - last year we
had the "phantom bookmarker" going around all day, if you were caught reading
she gave you a bookmark
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.randomhouse.com/seussville/
tyke_patrol - Teach,
great idea, we do foot painting every year, but I have never connected
it with that book!!
kc - For Reading
Month, our theme is March into Reading.
TeachNS - disney,
What level do you teach?
kc - How do you manage
foot painting, do you have help?
disney cathy - teach,
I teach kindergarten
TeachNS - Great Age!
Jan/ohio/2 - Do you
celebrate Right to Read Week?
blt - kids brought
all their seuss books in, we weighed them for each grade level, then made
a graph
Sandy/K/MO - tyke
& Steach did you go to t net and mailring and sign up again?
tyke_patrol - Yes,
I have help with footpainting. We put paint in a 9x13 cake pan, lay roll
paper on the floor, walk in paint then on paper. Careful, it gets slippery!!
jpm/ct - we are doing
these themes for march good health nutrituion green week signs of spring
using our senses any ideas
Kathleen - Did you
get this one (NEA Read Across America)? http://www.nea.org/readacross/
bmde - what kind
of graph
Sandy/K/MO - At the
beginning of the year we did an exchange with a class in England about
our favorite Suess book...
TeachNS - That sounds
neat Sandy.
Sandy/K/MO - do any
of you do weather? lion/lamb
bmde - how about
the one fish two fish red fish blue fish!
meeha/ece/tx - when
i paint feet, i try to apply lotion or oil to the kids' feet before the
paint -- it helps the clean-up to go faster!
blt - bmde--we made
a bar graph showing the book weights for each grade k-6
kc - I can't imagine
getting the feet clean, but I will try next week!!!
Kathleen - You can
Venn Diagram red, blue and red&blue fish
blt - bmde--that's
why we are doing the fish in the fishbowl
jpm/ct - one fish
two fish red fish blue fish is my favorite book i remember i made my dad
look forever for it in the library when i was 5
Sandy/K/MO - graphing
is great with the younger kids. :-)
bmde - oh cool sounds
like a neat idea did they win a prize for the books that weighed the most
Ron, Intern/1/FL
- Sandy, how'd you get the hook-up with England?
Sandy/K/MO - here
at t net.. on the main board
blt - bmde--no prizes,
but the satisfaction of winning, you could give a prize though
jpm/ct - how do you
vhen diargram it
Sandy/K/MO - moving
on in the month... St. Pat's day activties..
tyke_patrol - I would
love to do that with another Prek, Sandy, is anyone here interested?
blt - this year we
are graphing our favorite seuss books
TeachNS - Well I
have to go help my son with his homework. It has been great chatting with
all of you.
LJ - bmde -- would
you give prizes? if so , what?
jpm/ct - tyke patrol
what ??? I am interested in doing something that sandy did
meeha/ece/tx - jpm
-- for the 5 senses, try checking out this site: http://www.ghbooks.com/activity/19216410.htm
bmde - Do you guys
know of the web site "The
Perpetual Preschool". It has alot of different ideas about holidays
and different themes
Kathleen - VEnn Diagram-
you could use 2 hoops, or yarn circles, overlapping to create a third section
in the middle. Lead the kids to sort red fish into one, blue fish into
the other, then ask them where the 2-colored (red&blue) fish would
go..lead them to put them in the over lap
Ellen/MA/1 - St.
Pat's day is a day off from school. Called "sleep in"!
blt - st. pat's day--aims
has a great activity to do with lucky charms
tyke_patrol - My
favorite St Pat's idea is rather labor intensive, we do a scavenger hunt,
with hundreds of little green footprints all over and clues to the next
starting point. The end result is a pot of gold(gold candy coins) and a
new game or piece of equipment for the classroom
kc - I have a bulletin
board "At the end of every rainbow is a pot of good books". Goes along
with reading month. Has a black bot with book jackets inside>
Ellen/MA/1 - Evacuation
Day
blt - this year i
am doing some "spud stuff", each student will get a potato, draw it, name
it, measure, count eyes, etc.
LJ - tyke patrol
-- that sounds neat and fun
gene - evacuation
day, that's a Boston holiday...are you from boston?
TeachNS - Any pre-k
teachers interested in a pen pal program for a class activity.
meeha/ece/tx - tyke
-- that sounds like fun! (I read of a teacher last year who hid green shoes
in the classroom and sprinkeld green glitter about the room ... the little
fella did quite a work of mishcief about the room, the kids got to fix
it, then the fella left 'prizes' for the help!
Ellen/MA/1 - meeha,
that is really a cute idea. Was it messy to clean up the glitter?
Kathleen - I have
a few St. Patrick's Day activities in the Lesson Bank, but they don't show
up with a search of St. Patrick's, it is Lesson #313, or search for my
name
bmde - jpm/ct go
under the file tab on the top of the screen and chosse open then when the
box opens type in the whole e-mail address
meeha/ece/tx - kc
... LEPRECHAUNS NEVER LIE (Lorna Balian) is great!
blt - i also have
an irish tale called "fair, brown, and trembling" (like cinderella) that
i read, then we read cinderella and compare using a venn diagram
blt - slices of green
pepper are great for printing shamrocks
Sandy/K/MO - any
lion and lamb activities? signs of spring?
kc - Does anyone
have a St. Pat's party?
jpm/ct - sandy in
the Feb addition of mailbox there are 2 cooking activies for lamb and lion
we are graphing the days
Leaner - We have
a party on the calendar but not anything planned yet. Any ideas?
Sandy/K/MO - kc..
my kids bake cookies.. they shape them
Kathleen - We do
a Robin Watch, kids take home a paper with drawing of a robin, record the
date when they see their first robin (in Conn, a sign of Spring:-), color
the robin and return it to school, where we announce it at Circle Time
jpm/ct - thanks kathleen
sounds cool
Cathie/NC/3 - I used
to have green jello, green juice and green cupcakes for our St. Pat's party
blt - kathleen--i
like the robin idea, we could do that here in pa
Sandy/K/MO - we planted
tulips with the journey north projects and they are coming up now :-)
Kathleen - Leaner,
check Lesson #313 in the Teachers.Net Lesson Bank for some St. Pat's ideas
http://teachers.net/lessons
blt - cathie--i have
had the kids bring a green snack for a read and feed on st. pat's day
Kathleen - we make
green mashed potatoes, create potato heads with traced, cutouts and wiggly
eyes, etc.
Sandy/K/MO - can't
spell it but that green pudding as a secret mix
meeha/ece/tx - must
be spring here in Texas ... there must have been 10 or 15 robins in my
backyard just yesterday!
Gumbo again! - pistachio??????
Sandy/K/MO - Laura
would you be willing to host a flat stanley from Mo?
Ellen/MA/1 - As I
arrived late, did you post directions on how to make those red/white hats-The
Cat in the Hat?
Sandy/K/MO - no Ellen..
I would like the directions too
tyke_patrol - Good
question, Ellen, I would love to find an easier way than I am doing it
tyke_patrol - I use
tagboard, make a brim, then a ring of cardboard for hat and circle for
top, tape all together, very time consuming, not very sturdy
blt - tyke--i've
done the same thing and they lasted for the day so the kids were thrilled
tyke_patrol - That's
a good start, easier than tagboard
meeha/ece/tx - when
you attach the 'pipe' to the brim, do you cut little tabs to tape under
the brim? that will help strengthen the joint a lot!
Sandy/K/MO - do you
remember any mailbox giving the directions?
tyke_patrol - I do
make two or three out of fabric for the dress up area
tyke_patrol - no
I haven't meeha, but I will now! that should help
meeha/ece/tx - if
you check at craft stores and/or places like walgreens around hallowe'en,
they're "dirt cheap" -- I've picked up a number of hats like that one for
$2 and $3 in the past two years!
Sandy/K/MO - Dr.
Suess site lets you ask the cat and he answers along with other games..http://www.randomhouse.com/seussville/
meeha/ece/tx - tyke
... we're just starting our Outer Space unit -- the boys are rather involved
in planets, rocket ships, start ... we've not gotten to satellites, comets,
etc. yet -- could be fun and very interesting!
Steach - March: Wind...kites,
windmills, etc
Sandy/K/MO - for
a comet we painted a styrofoam ball yellow and stuck a craft stick and
crepe paper in the bottom and they could run with it
meeha/ece/tx - tyke
-- i teach sped preschool, they get what they can! (we have a lot of fun!)
one kid went home Monday and told his mom NOT to send him to Mercury, he
would be melted!
Sandy/K/MO - I have
some really neat snacks too that are easy and fun will bring home tomorrow
tyke_patrol - What
about weather, what are some of the things you all do for that unit?
meeha/ece/tx - today
we found a really fun song by Thomas Moore -- THE OPERA SINGER -- a take-off
on Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star -- all 18 of my kiddos sang it! (that doesn't
happen often!)
Steach - I do Rain
Experiment
Sandy/K/MO - we make
a rain guage, wind indicator, lion and lamb puppets, keep caledar :-)
tyke_patrol - Steach,
Rain experiment?
Leaner - What do
you use to make your rain gauge?
Sandy/K/MO - this
year going to do a sundial if we ever have sun :-)
Cherie - In weather,
we make rain, put thermometers under black and white paper to see which
conducts heat the best.
Steach - put lots
of ice in container on top of a clear container and observe :)
Sandy/K/MO - just
a small plastic test tube.. and a ruler
tyke_patrol - We
can't do rain guage here, still getting snow!
meeha/ece/tx - kites
and the little hand held wind mills are fun, too!
Sandy/K/MO - we put
out a couple, one under a tree and out in the open.. then decide why they
aren't the same.
tyke_patrol - I have
tried kites a few times with little success, any suggestions?
Sandy/K/MO - ok snow
guage :-) make a rainbow mobile
meeha/ece/tx - How
about letting the kids make 'wind socks' -- roll a 12 x 18 " piece of construction
paper ... glue or staple into a long cylinder. punch holes around the bottom
and tie (staple, glue, tape ...) crepe paper streamers, attach string at
three points at the top for hanging
Leaner - What about
a paper plate with streamers for a kite?
Sandy/K/MO - instead
of kites... I had the kids make 3 butterflies and string them with yarn,
then yarn through straw an they run... butterflies seem to fly
nat/k/ma - Do you
celebrate St Patrick's Day in other states. That is another holiday that
we spend a week on studying Ireland, etc.
Steach - tyke I use
the cardboard roll from paper towels and cut to size, paint and add strips
of tissue paper to end they love to take it outside to playground
tyke_patrol - Wind
socks are a definite yes, we'll try them, do you actually get kites to
fly?
meeha/ece/tx - really
and truly ... I bought two or three kites at the dollar store last year.
kids made paper kites that barely fly
meeha/ece/tx - really
and truly ... I bought two or three kites at the dollar store last year.
kids made paper kites that barely fly!
Sandy/K/MO - he is
also patron saint of Engineers and Mo. has big engineering school
meeha/ece/tx - you
can let them tie a plastic grocery bag on a long string -- it will fly
most of the time (they just run and up it goes!) balloons work ... paper
kites are very inconsistent
Sandy Mo - you have
evacuation day?
Ellen - It is called
Evacuation Day, The day we forced the British Army out of Boston, during
the American Revolution.
tyke_patrol - We
do a lot of things with Irish and Scottish music for St Pat's, it is such
unique music
nat/k/ma - Thanks
Sandy. Evacuation Day. I mention it as the days is closing after having
a St Patrick's Day party.
Kathleen - I never
heard of Evacuation Day! interesting
Ellen - Holiday here
in Boston, Kat, no school.
tyke_patrol - I have
never heard of it either, are you sure it's not just a bankers holiday?
LOL
Kathleen - Ellen,
only Boston, right? not the rest of Mass.?
Ellen - It is strictly
a Boston holiday!
Kathleen - Mass.
has Patriot's Day. we don't have that holiday in Conn.
Ellen - I live outside
of Boston, in Quincy and the kids here have school.
nat/k/ma - We also
have Bunker Hill Day off. Ellen are you in school that long?
Ellen - oh, yes,
we also have that day off in April, but it is during our April vacation
week, off that week too!
Kathleen - Next Week:
Balanced Literacy. Djinn hosts. :-) bye
