Sandy/K/MO - Welcome to Teachers.Net EC/Primary Teachers' Weekly Meeting. Tonight we will be discussing Multiple Intelligences
Sandy/K/MO - Hi Joedy :-) Do you use this in your classrooms?
Sandy/K/MO - I did find this wonderful site that looks like it has a lot of information http://www.lincolncity.org/schools/teach/theory.html
nat/k/ma - I am here to learn about MI, because I don't know too much of anything about it.
maestra-TX - I'm doing a presentation on logical mathmatical intelligence. What do I need to tell teachers.
Sandy/K/MO - I have gone to several workshops and am eager to try it out. there is a school in St Louis that does nothing but MI
cindy - I'm taking a course now for my master's on MI
carolinajoy - We have based lots of projects and activities on the multiple intelligences for the past several years.
Sal - Give student experiences using maps, graphing, creating 3-D models, etc. Hands on MATH!
Sandy/K/MO - maestra. try the site I posted... it has technology programs posted and major info
cindy - I haven't used it yet, but it sounds interesting.
nat/k/ma - Can someone explain what is multiple intelligences?
Grace/IL - Carolinajoy, what kinds of projects did you do?
maestra-TX - There are eight ways to be smart.
Sal - Everyone is strong or smart in several areas-in kid language...
Heather - I had a grad course last year that focsed on using MI in the classroom. I have been using it in my 4th and 5th grade LS room all year with great success. The kids love it and I would like to incorporate it more into my whole curriculm. Right now I mainly use it during my trade book instruction.
Heather - Eight smarts? What is the new one?
Sandy/K/MO - Gardner developed the 7 intelligences but I think there are 8 now ... Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily/Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Naturalist
(Multiple Intelligences)
Carol/CO - I heard that Naturalist and Existentialist are two new intelligences- is this proposed by Gardner?
maestra-TX - We are using music across the curriculum now. It works.
Heather - There are a couple of propposed intelligences in his book, but he says that he has to find the neurological evidence before he will make it an official intelligence.
nat/k/ma - O.k. 30 years ago when I went to college, it was called, educating the whole child
Sal - well... nature is science smart, but the logical-mathematical and space (spatial) are connected.
katieTX - maestra, how do you use music across the curriculum? give examples please
maestra-TX - I enjoyed the workshops so much, refreshed my almost burn out
maestra-TX - Would you like an insect song?
Carol/CO - spatial also applies to artistic tendencies, nature is also an interpersonal type (if the "person" is not necessarily human)
katieTX - maestra, what I mean how do you tie it to your core curriculum?
maestra-TX - Kagan explained nature as more of a naturalist, in tune with living things.
Kathleen - Not for early childhood, but an example would be: For example, the teacher can suggest that an especially musically intelligent child learn about the revolutionary war by making up a song about what happened. [modify to meet the needs of curriculum at your level]
Doug/Ca - maestro- do you use known songs and change the lyrics?
Grace/IL - When I taught music as a part of our first-grade curriculum, I used song charts so that children could see the words. In that way they were learning songs through both auditory and visual memory.
maestra-TX - Mostly we make up songs to help students remember our curriculum
maestra-TX - We change the lyrics to well known songs.
Heather - Another way to incorporate music is simply to create rhythmic rhymes to assist your students in memorizing information
Sal - My students have the list of "kid smarts", and we've been covering where we're smartest, and where we need to practice. They share their "smarts" with each other. 8-)
Carol/CO - Music can be used as a mnemonic, Katie. Also finding patterns (rhythm) in language or math could lead to a musical connection.
Grace/IL - In the reading program, Sing, Spell, Read and Write, songs are used at every stage of early reading. The author, Sue Dickson, also has math and geography songs.
katieTX - grace, I've observed that when I take my HS students into the elem. It seems to work well. Anybody have any suggestions for my HS students. They get very offended if they think they are being taught "down".
Sandy/MO - We are doing a money rap and a reptile rap and they are learning
maestra-TX - Eric Cork has a great Parts of Speech song. Set to "I Feel Good" by james Brown
Kathleen - Here is an article that sounds interesting: Lazear, David (1992). Teaching for Multiple Intelligences. Fastback 342 Bloomington, IN: Phi Delta Kappan Educational Foundation. (ED 356 227) (highly recommended)
Sal - OOh- I want the Parts of Speech song.
Heather - Sal, I taught the smarts to my kids to and being an LS class, I think it really boosted their self esteem.
Sandy/MO - Task Card Overview/Multiple Intelligences - http://www.metronet.com/~bhorizon/teach.htm
maestra-TX - Would the high school students be more comfortable with a rap?
Heather - Do you have a reference for finding the parts of speech song?
Grace/IL - In a seminar at Illinois Reading Council a couple of years back they used Venn diagrams, story webs, etc. and considered that using multiple intelligences.
maestra-TX - There are great books at the Kagan Coop Learning site on the net.
Sandy/MO - Multiple Intelligence - Howard Gardner - http://www.aenc.org/ABOUT/MI-Gardner.html
Ky-Deb - Are you familiar with DWOK
katieTX - Maestra, HS students sometimes are too cool for school. Some of them get offended or pretend to if they think you are babying them
Kathleen - Fogarty, R., & Stoehr, J. (1995). Integrating curricula with multiple intelligences. Teams, themes, and threads K-college. Palatine, IL: IRI Skylight Publishing Inc.
Sandy/MO - Multiple Intelligences - http://www.earlychildhood.com/articles/artmi.html
Grace/IL - Maestro, high schoolers would do well with rap. In her winnings program, that's what Sue Dickson uses.
Sandy/MO - Amazon.com has many of Gardners books.. can order through t-net
maestra-TX - I plan to post it on the message board when I can remember to bring it home. Eric Cork is out of Houston, TX. Does Rap, Rhythm, and Rhyme workshops all aover the US.
Kathleen - Here is an ERIC Digest that summarizes Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences (9/96): http://www.ed.gov/databases/ERIC_Digests/ed410226.html
Sandy/MO - My kinders are learning better using the raps, poems, songs since I started using them.
cindy - What do you know about Whimbey's Taxonomy?
Grace/IL - I have a printout from Camille Blachowicz at National-Louis University on how to use MI in vocabulary instruction -- present visual and auditory forms of words is one.
Ky-Deb - I would like more info about printout Grace
maestra-TX - Kagan told of a girl that couldn't read so her teacher told her to dance the alphabet.
Grace/IL - Blachowicz also encourages play of all types, games, word play books, riddles, jokes, puns. Each of these appeals to different students.
cindy - Have you planned lessons using Whimbey's Taxonomy?
maestra-TX - I believe the Kagan site is http://www.kagancooplearn.com
Sandy/MO - how Maestra?
maestra-TX - She made up movements for each letter of the alphabet.
cindy - "Thing making" is the lowest on the taxonomy.
Grace/IL - One of our teachers has had training in movement to the alphabet. Make a big letter on the floor and have students move (dance) through it.
maestra-TX - She was several years below grade level. First she danced her name. Then words. Then sentences and so on. Then one day she stopped dancing, but she was reading at a 6th grade level.
Sandy/MO - do any of your music/art teachers carry your unit/themes into their classrooms?
cindy - We are using the Linguistic Network Method.
Grace/IL - Cindy, what is the linguistic network method?
Heather - Can you explain Cindy?
maestra-TX - Yes ours is wonderful. I'm not much of a singer.
nat/k/ma - My Art teacher tries very hard to coordinate with my themes.
maestra-TX - She teaches a preposition song that goes to "Yankee Doodle"
cindy - It's when you use graphic organizers to map out your thinking.
Anne - Sandy, yes, ours do--we let them know monthly what we are studying, though we have schoolwide science themes
Sandy/MO - That is really nice that they do that.. Maestra, that's why I like kdg.
maestra-TX - I teach 5th grade.
cindy - There are several different types: Explain, characterize, sequence
cindy - There's also Result, Cause/Effect
maestra-TX - The Parts of Speech song, "I Feel Eight" is copyrighted, but I can give the source.
Sandy/MO - ok that would be great thanks. :-)
maestra-TX - We are using our body smart Monday by making a human graph.
Grace/IL - I think that whenever we use visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile senses and add music, we're going to reach a lot of students. Intrapersonal activities include personal logs that relate to character/book. Interpersonal activities inclue group games, and activities. Blachowicz questions whether humor might be another intelligence.
cindy - There's also definition. The maps are used to categorize thinking.
Sandy/MO - I went to MI and tech. for the logical/Math use database, spreadsheets, problem solving, strategy gams and multimeadia authoring
Anne - Keep the info coming..tell us more about MI !
maestra-TX - We have the whole 5th grade line up by the month of their birthdays. That's a bar graph. Then stretch yarn across letting the first person in each line hold it and you have a line graph. Then you can make a circle graph by moving the kids.
nat/k/ma - Sandy that sounds interesting. I am very techie and would love to hear about your conference. Did it apply to kindergarten
jazzy - Where can I find a MI test for elem students?
cindy - This Linguistic Network Technique is great for all grade levels. It can really help kids organize their thinking.
Grace/IL - Maestra, great idea with the graphs.
maestra-TX - Kagan gave us one at the workshop.
Sandy - its at that first web site Teacher Resources: Theory and Practice ... http://www.lincolncity.org/schools/teach/theory.html
maestra-TX - Great to test teachers too.
Sandy - for bodily kinesthetic... use joystick, mouse, touchpad, keyboarding animation programs and programs that let them move things around, manipulating
Sandy - IntRApersonal... games against the computer, self awareness/ self improvement
maestra-TX - Tomorrow my presentation for teachers will be on using logical mathmatical intelligence in Reading and Language.
Sandy - intERpersonal.... programs with group, decision making, tv production..
Grace/IL - Another book is "If the Shoe Fits, How to DevelopMultiple Intelligences in the Classroom by Carolyn Chapman (Palatine IL: IRI/Skylight Publishing, Inc. 1993
Anne - Can you explain a little, Maestra?
maestra-TX - Kagan has a great same/different activity using pictures for each holidy
Grace/IL - Book -- "Multiple Intelligences in the Classroom" by Thomas Armstrong (Alexandria, VA: ASCD, 1994)
Grace/IL - Book -- "7 Kinds of Smart" by Thomas Armstrong (New York: Penguin Books, 1993)
Grace/IL - Book -- "Seven Ways of Knowing" by David Lazear (Palatine IL: Skylight Publishing, 1991)
Grace/IL - Book -- "Seven Pathways of Learning, Teaching Students and Parents about Multiple Intelligences" by David Lazear (Tucson AZ: Zephyr Press, 1994)
maestra-TX - Way to use logical mathmatical intelligence in Reading and language are...show cause and effect, compare and contrast, solve a mystery, create a time line, predict outcomes, justify a conclusion, make an outlline and my favorite...
sue3 - sandy, isn't there an 8th intelligence now?
lorip123 - Do you believe that you teach the child to use their stronger intelligences?
Grace/IL - Book -- "Multiple Assessments for Multiple Intelligences by Bellanca, Chapman and Swartz (Palatine IL: IRI/Skylight Publishing, 1994) That's the end of this bibiliography LOL
Sandy - yes they have said there is another one.. I thought spiritual
sue3 - spiritual? please explain, how can we do that in public school?
maestra-TX - ....put spelling words or vocabulary words into categories, such as parts of speech, person place or thing, or animal, mineral vegetable
Sandy - In a interview I read Gardner said that the ed. system is slanted toward logical/math and linguistic... but that Intelligences need to work in concert not isolation
sue3 - lori- I think they do that instinctively
maestra-TX - I think we need to give them opportunities to develop the ways that they are smart
Sandy - I really don't see how you can use that one in public school unless it would be in the study of Indians..
Sandy - I hope to, use more of the different Intell. to reach some of the kids that are having trouble. I think your idea of dancing the alpha will help one of my boys. :-)
maestra-TX - Teacher Created Materials has a great book called Multiple Intellegence activities
sue3 - sandy, maybe by nature study, aesthetic awareness?
Kathleen - The eighth added by Gardner is the naturalist
Sandy - Sue, that would work.. ye..
maestra-TX - Oprah does it.
lorip123 - Does anyone incorporate the intelligences into their weekly planning? Do you make sure that you are using all of the intelligences?
maestra-TX - not yet Lori
sue3 - I think if you structure your activites based on the old KTVA mode it will help you reach all the kids intelligences
maestra-TX - I just work them in when they fit with the lesson.
Grace/IL - Thanks, Kathleen, I had read it recently but it wouldn't come to mnd.
Sandy - I have been using more of the body/kinesthetic and music this year
maestra-TX - Sandy, I think those are the most fun
Sandy - they learned their money recogn. better
Kelly/MO - I'm new at this.....did I miss a response about a test to give to determine the specific intelligence(s) of a child?
lorip123 - I think music is one of the most "unused" ways -especially with upper students.
Sandy - Kelly there is a test located at one of the sites
maestra-TX - Because it's easy to come up with corny songs for 5th graders, HS would be harder
Grace/IL - Kelly, I don't think there's a good test. Some years ago we tested for visual and auditory learners but the results were very inconclusive.
sue3 - sandy, could the test be used with the little ones?
Grace/IL - Lorip, how about having the students create corny songs?
maestra-TX - I liked the test Kagan gave, then he gives a chart to show how you are smart.
Sandy - it wasn't hard.. quest. like.. I ike to be alone
Pat - Sandy, how did you teach money recognition using body/kinesthetic and music?
Sandy - I like to work by myself? people tell me things those kind of questions
lorip123 - My first graders love to create songs and maybe I'm underestimating older students. I'm thinking mainly of high schoolers.
Sandy - I have a money rap.. and we clap and use fingers for value
Sandy - show 25 cents flashing our fingers and they go crazy
Pat - Sounds great. We teach phases of the moon to Billy Boy
maestra-TX - The test asks questions like for recreation I like to... and gives choices from each intelligence
maestra-TX - We could do a whole web site on songs.
Sandy - I think we all need to post these raps on one of the boards :-)
Pat - I'm game
Sandy - have a reptile rap that is awesome too
maestra-TX - Teachers in Killeen TX came up with songs to help with state mandated test objectives.
Kelly/MO - Please do! I know I'd appreciate it! But don't forget, I'm the newbie! So tell me how to find them! Thanks! :)
Pat - We are so creative!!!:)
Sandy - This has been wonderful for me tonight. I can see where I need to get deeper in this. :-)
Kathleen - Sandy, thank you for another informative and helpful session!
Sandy - I have learned so much this went by SO fast :-)
