Djinn - welcome
to the ECE chat room. Tonight we are going buggy! And I don't mean that
literally. Well - maybe I do!
Djinn - I think I
have collected so many buggy ideas this past month that I could prbably
do them for a whole year.
Djinn - Sandy - how
is your Pond unit going?
Sandy/K/MO - we are
having a GREAT time..
Djinn - these are
posted to the lesson board http://www.teachers.net/lessons/posts/721.html
Doug - I have some
old socks that I am thinking of using to make for caterpillars for The
Very Hungry Caterpillar. Should i dye them green?
Sandy/K/MO - Doug
I tried painting them green in a class and it was a MESS :-) but the cutouts
of the food are good
Djinn - We are discussing
"Buggy " activities tonight. Sandy is doing a pond unit
deb - We just got
some caterpillars and a butterfly house...anyone been to www.insectlore.com?
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.yucky.com/teachercenter/index.ssf?/bugs/index.html#k2
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/Entomology/images.html
Djinn - our Lesson
Exchange has at least 6 bug lessons
Doug - they turn
into beautiful moths
Djinn - Doug- I have
never used mealworms - what do you observe
deb - Ours are supposed
to turn into Painted Lady butterflies!
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.entsoc.org/educate.htm
This one is really neat :-)
Djinn - I have used
silkworms and they are really fun
Djinn - Keep em coming
Sandy!
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/Entomology/ythfacts/entyouth.htm
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.ent.iastate.edu/misc/insectsasfood.html
this site will gross them out.. eating insects
Doug - Segments,
legs, reaction to water, wind. I like to be a psychologist and put one
each into each end of a straw and observe what they do.
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.ent.iastate.edu/imagegallery/
Djinn - LOL Doug
- can you do that with kids too?
Djinn - We start
out with the Very Hungry Caterpillar
Djinn - Sandy - did
you get Pond ideas from Mailbox?
deb - Have you been
to Eric Carle's website? it's got some cute ideas!
Sandy/K/MO - our
conservation dept made monarch models parts of it but also took a wetlands
course
Doug - deb- do you
know the address?
Djinn - Not recently
Deb- thanks I'll check it out
deb - http://www.eric-carle.com/
Djinn - Sandy - how
many times will you visit the pond?
Sandy/K/MO - the
real one only once. Our Conservation lady will take us and help us out
deb - Sandy- are
you going to do the tadpole to frog thing?
Djinn - How wonderful
- it's so expensive to take buses that we don't get to go on trips too
often
Doug - Djinn- i know
what you mean. We are given one trip a year
Djinn - http://www.teachers.net/lessons/posts/450.html
Sandy/K/MO - the
pond is about a mile away so will take cars and our buses are owned by
a Grandfather so anything close he drives for free :-)
Sandy/K/MO - Djinn...
did we get all the songs posted in the lessons?
Doug - Any ideas
on using KidPix with insects on the computer?
Djinn - Sandy - I
think I got them all - I made 3 posts
deb - Wow! We have
access to vans and go on a field trip every week! We went to a greenhouse
today!
Sandy/K/MO - I did
the tadpoles one year had SO many we were over run :-)
Doug - deb- you are
very lucky
Djinn - http://www.teachers.net/lessons/posts/372.html
Sandy/K/MO - Doug...
a couple of those sites had pictures.. and the Orkan site at the smithsonian
has an interactive journey
Djinn - http://www.teachers.net/lessons/posts/983.html
Djinn - http://www.teachers.net/lessons/posts/974.html
deb - is anybody
going to do the Earth Day theme next week?
Djinn - Deb- Earthday
is now in our archives
Sandy/K/MO - http://naturalpartners.org/InsectZoo/index.html
Djinn - http://www.teachers.net/lessons/posts/984.html
deb - Great-I'll
check it out! What site is that at?
Doug - deb- my wife
says that using insects for Earth Day is a REAL stretch. What do you think?
Gumbo/K/La - doing
recycling/Earth day this week and next.....
Sandy/K/MO - http://www.alienexplorer.com/ecology/topic9.html
Djinn - Deb - look
to the left of your screens - hit on archive and scroll down to ECE
deb - I think she
might be right! Of course Earth worms are good recyclers!!
Sandy/K/MO - the
alien explorer site is really cool has pond stuff too
Gumbo/K/La - not
a stretch-----insects very important to us in general and rainforests in
particular.....
Djinn - http://www.teachers.net/lessons/posts/985.html
Sandy/K/MO - I usually
tie in the rainforest and our butterflies to earthday BUT butterflies didn't
cooperate
Djinn - Doug- aren't
bugs the ones that will inherit the Earth. Saw a movie about that once.
Sandy/K/MO - bugs
survived the Dino's :-)
hershy - i am having
an inclass field trip about bugs the end of this month
Djinn - I am collecting
egg carton for making catepillars and butterflies
hershy - djinn my
friend did that and made the cutest bulletin board
deb - I have a cute
snack idea for "butterfly bites"!
Djinn - My kids had
an inclass field trip today - 3 little guys with rolly pollies int their
pocket!
deb - it's pretty
simple...celery stalks filled with soft cheddar cheese, pretzel twist wings
and pretzel stick antenae, raisins for eyes!
Djinn - We will be
doing life cycle on paper plates using different kinds of macaroni
Doug - I like to
pass out sour worms that you can get at Costco and we eat and dance to
Eating Worms by Robert McCracken
Sandy/K/MO - take
cinn. doughnut holes, cut one in half for head. Two potato chips for wings,
licorich (string) for probiscus and have a bee
deb - We are making
"mud" this week with gummy worms and sunflower seeds!
hershy - you can
also make the edible dirt with the worm in it
Djinn - LOL Doug!
Anyone Ever heard of the Bungee Jumping Cows? Band plays science music.
Termite flatulence is a favorite
Doug - Good ones...never
forget the classic ants on a log (celery, peanut butter and raisins)
deb - Another cute
food experience is cinnamon caterpillars. Just take a bread stick, twist,
sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar, bake. Add raisin or m&m eyes!
hershy - what about
symmetrical painted butterflies.... put some paint inthe middle of the
paper and fold comes out really cool
Doug - any insect
dances?
Djinn - You can make
butterflies with dot markers and coffee filters - I posted to the lesson
exchange under butterlies
Sandy/K/MO - bug-O-bingo.....
fill a bingo card with letters they think they will hear in insects names..
then call out different insects
Sandy/K/MO - draw
a honeycomb and have the numbers across the middle add up to 12
hershy - we have
a place called butterfly world to go to for field trips
deb - Has anybody
seen the "footprint" butterflies idea? You have each child rub sole of
shoe with a crayon onto paper for wings, add a body & wings and attach
this poem: Please keep these footprints to remind you when I'm tall...That
once I was quite little and my feet were also small!
Doug - deb- you get
the prize
Sandy/K/MO - bug-a-mation
put some bugs in a jar (plastic ones) and have them estimate how many
deb - hershy- I bet
butterfly world is awesome!!
Djinn - deb - i paint
their hands = middle finger black for body - then each finger symmetrically
a different color - spead the fingers then print of paper - add antennae
hershy - it is really
neat the butterflies actually land on you
Djinn - Sandy - I'm
going to add bug sorting this year -
twin - I am teaching
a summer program at a local university and the unit I have selected is
insects.
Sandy/K/MO - for
the Grouchy Ladybug make a story mat of a leaf and aphids for counters
or ladybugs :-)
Sandy/K/MO - I do
the footprint with reindeers
Djinn - You can also
make butterflies using folded paper and dropping paint - then fold . When
dry cut out.
Sandy/K/MO - twin..
I have a wonderful multi- intelligence unit on bugs :-)
deb - The April/May
issue of Mailbox this month has cute butterfly ideas!
Sandy/K/MO - caterpillar
measuring, graph favorite fruits, add and subtract fruits, textures of
fruits then sort by smooth/rough
Sandy/K/MO - grouchy
ladybug clock with hands to teach time
deb - preschool at
our
local Headstart!
twin - Deb-what level
of mailbox?
Djinn - Sandy - i
love that book - do you make paper plate lady bugs?
deb - The preschool
level
twin - Sandy-is it
possible for me to get the unit from you, or at least a list of resources?
Sandy/K/MO - yes
and the kids LOVE it.. yes twin email me and I will send it
deb - Sandy- Another
cute idea for the Grouchy Ladybug is to make paper bag lady bug costumes
and let the kids act out the story!
Djinn - deb- what
a great idea! Do you make vests?
deb - Yes!
Djinn - We make antennae
using a band of paper around the head and straws
deb - Another great
antenae headpiece is to use a girl's plastic headband and attach pipe cleaner
antenae
Djinn - I just got
a set of magnifying glasses - tomorrow we will take a closer look at the
rolly polly bugs.
twin - Djinn-before
I sign off, did you order the rolly polly bugs?
Djinn - I have 12
boys and 6 girls - this unit should really get some excitement
Sandy/K/MO - I have
just a couple of those cube magnifying glasses, they put the bug in it,
Djinn - twin - no
they came in from recess in pockets today!
deb - Eric Carle's
site has cute Grouchy Ladybug activities also!! They have a message board
for each story and people contribute their ideas!
Djinn - deb - thanks
for reminding me about that site! I forgot all about it until tonight
deb - Djinn-Wow!!
12 boys and 6 girls! What age do you teach?

Sandy/K/MO - I am
an all day kdg.
deb - That's about
what I have my 3-5 year old class of 17 at HeadStart!
Djinn - We have no
aides - so we trade off helping each other out.
Djinn - I'm loving
this samll class size - we can do so much more!
Djinn - boy are my
fingers going "buggy"!
deb - The nice thing
about HeadStart is it's federally funded so...I have a 36 hour aide, a

so...needless to say we had a field trip to see our chicks!
Djinn - Sandy- I'm
going to ask for an incubator for next year.
Djinn - Deb - how
neat for the kids - mine think that milk and eggs come from the supermarket!
Sandy/K/MO - they
bring the incubator on Fri, eggs on Mon and have chicks by Wed. and go
home on Fri. :-)
deb - Chickens Aren't
the Only Ones is a great book!
