Paulie - I want to know what phonics and math programs you use in K in yur school?
pez - We use Phonological Zoo, but I do Building Blocks
pez - MAth Their Way is what we use
Paulie - yes, I liek BB

Paulie - why do u like phonological zoo?
pez - I don't know, I live in Florida
Paulie - lol that is the name of it
Paulie - and kp what do you use for phonics and math?
pez - I don't really like it. It's a resource we have. We also use the Wright Group
pez - Oh, LOL, didn't know.
Paulie - I liek wright group also and Rigby
pez - A lot of the strategies in phono zoo I can do with Building Blocks
Paulie - I really know how to spell like but my fingers don't
pez - and my kids love to write.
Paulie - that is good -- we had used Zoo Phonics a CA program in years past
Paulie - that is great -- I love to encourage writing
pez - I think phono zoo would be better in pre-k

pez - I don't think so
Paulie - I don't know phono zoo -- not familiar with it
Paulie - their name is here maybe they don't know how to write a message?
pez - it's possible
Paulie - so how long u use BB?
pez - Lots of rhyming, segmenting, blending etc, but I can do that and more with BB
pez - This is my 2nd year using BB and I've seen more of a jump in learning this year
Paulie - ahve u used BB as a stand alone phonics program
pez - I also teach the ESOL kids and BB really helps thems
Paulie - I am on the curriculum committee for a new school here in WA
Paulie - and we are in the process of getting books for K and first gr
pez - Since I have to do shared reading and guided writing, I do use it as a stand alone. I just make sure to incorporate the wright group and rigby
Paulie - kp left I guess
Paulie - so you have lots of leveled books from wright and rigby?
pez - I have from level 1 all the way to 17 I think
Paulie - neato
Paulie - Does your state have standards for K?
pez - It really is. I have 5 girls that are reading on level 11
Paulie - great
pez - yes, it does.
pez - We are an all day program
Paulie - WA only has benchmarks for 4,7, and 11th grades
Paulie - I wish they had standards too get u to those levels
pez - In fact I have to do running records next week
Paulie - finally got them two years ago
Paulie - running records are being phased out
pez - I wish they would phase them out down here
Paulie - lol
Paulie - I liek all day K I taught it only one year The rest were half days
pez - It must be so hard to get it all in a half day
pez - you have time for all thespecials and time for the kids to play
pez - in a full day
Paulie - you got that right but we had two teachers and part time aide and jsut 20 kids
Paulie - sometimes their play time suffered
pez - Wow, we don't have aides. Right now I'm sitting at 23. 15 girls and 8 boys. 4 kids don't speak English
pez - Are you doing anything special for the end of the year?
Paulie - My team teacher taught the model B (spanish) class with me helping her and one kid knew NO English
Paulie - so he had to learn to understand it and was speakig it away at end of year
pez - I have 3 that speak spanish, one that speaks polish
Paulie - I am not teaching this year but hope to be in K on this new school we are starting in fall
Paulie - what kind of things do u mean by end of year?
pez - end of year activities
Paulie - we always made memory books
Paulie - the kids filled in words and drew pictures
Paulie - front was a photo of them from first week of school
Paulie - as the center of a flower and we ahd them add petals
Paulie - and it was a Kinder Garden memory book had a poem to go with it
pez - We make them too. Actually, I have a big project coming up next week. We partner with an 8th grade english class. They interview the kids and write a fictional story. This year because my kids love to write, we're going to write stories for them too
