Kathleen - Welcome to Teachers.Net:-)
Kathleen - Does anyone have an idea for a Mother's Day activity, project, gift?
Rosie - I am having my students pick their best art painting and then I will frame it on black paper for mother's day
bordercollies - I use the digital camera and take a picture then put it on a cut out of kids hand and laminate. With a magnet on the back for fridge
meeha/ece/tx - grace -- it is a trade-off ... we go back to work on august 3 and the kids return on the 14th!
Kathleen - Subscribe to the early childhood mailring (if you haven't already) and visit http://teachers.net/mentors/early_childhood
Rosie - What is the mailring Kathleen?
grace - Kathleen, we are inviting the moms in for muffins and a little classroom visit. We are planting flowers for them and making a booklet.
Kathleen - grace, tell us about the booklet
Kathleen - Rosie, a mailring is an e-mail discussion group, terrific way to be in touch with hundreds of others at your grade level
meeha/ece/tx - i'm still toying with hand imprints in plaster encased in a balloon ... if i can figure a way to make it make sense...
bordercollies - I am on the mailring, that's how I found out about this chat
Rosie - how do you sign up Kathleen?
Kathleen - meeha, you need to tell us more, that sounds very interesting
grace - The booklet contains a picture of the child with his or her hand print. Then the child draws a picture of his or her mother and answers questions like, I love my mom because..... My mother can...... My favorite thing to do with my mother is.... You can get some really outrageous answers.
bordercollies - Also fun to do a "favorite recipe book" where kids tell you how to make their favorite food that mom makes for them.
Kathleen - Rosie, e-mail me at kathleen@teachers.net for help, the subscription page is at http://teachers.net/mailrings
meeha/ece/tx - kathleen -- i remember doing something similar as an elementary student ... fill balloon with wet plaster, then just have the child hold the balloon (2 hands) until the plaster soft-sets ... then let go to hardset ... remove balloon & let kiddos paint ... then spray varnish ????? anyone know if it may work?
Kathleen - grace, that sounds very nice! Once I had a page on which the child filled in blanks: my mother is --- years old. She weighs about ------. The thing she cooks best is _________,
meeha/ece/tx - I'll probably try it at home this weekend and see if it has possibilities ...
bordercollies - OOH Kathleen....I'll bet that book was a riot!!!
grace - Kathleen, love those ideas. Think I'll add those to the book. I bet you get some great answers.
Leslie PreK - Our preschool is doing a "Take Your Mom To Hawaii Day" based on an idea Britt posted on the chatboard a while back. Our music teacher worte us a piggyback to Baby Beluga and then our moms will come back to our rooms for breakfast.
Gumbo - I like the book idea......wish I had started it earlier.......
meeha/ece/tx - Leslie ... how sweet!
Kathleen - grace, they are a riot, can't remember the others, probably height, what makes her mad, etc. but you get the idea
bordercollies - Those of you who have moms come to the classroom, do you have good attendence and what about kids whose moms don't/won't come?
Leslie PreK - We are making picture frames that the children will decorate with seashells.
Mary/PA - Add to the book, "Mom's best recipe is ..." Have them tell about it, how to make it, etc. It's usually very funny
Red - I'm a sub. Tomorrow I'm subbing for a K class. I;ve never subbed K before. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm looking for suggestions as to what I can bring to "keep them busy" if they finish the work that was left by their teacher OR if there are no plans left...???
meeha/ece/tx - Leslie ... if you don't have a beach nearby, the DOLLAR TREE sells baskets of shells for one dollar ... probably enough to do three or four frames, anyhow!
Rosie - Where are you subbing Red?
grace - When I taught in a private school, I had 100% attendance almost every year. In the urban school where I am at now I have about 50%. I get the para to act as moms for the others.
breesbaby - Is any teacher willing to answer one question that I have to do for school?
Kathleen - Red, play a game like Doggie, Doggie, Who has your bone?
Gumbo - you can also use buttons to decorate the frames if you can't get shells.....
Leslie PreK - Since this is our very first year, brand new school. we are hoping this will become a "signature" event and each year we can take the Moms to a different destination. A good chance to add a multicultural element to the curriculum.
bordercollies - Hi Red. A good anytime time filler is the "freeze dance" Any song on a record will do and kids dance to it while the music is on, but you stop it periodically and they have to freeze.
Red - At a public elem school in NY
meeha/ece/tx - Red ... color or shape based "I SPY" in the classroom ...
Leslie PreK - Thanks, Meeha, we are lucky to be in S. Florida about 15 minutes from the beach!
Kathleen - nat, are you here??
Rosie - Red you can read them a story and then have them draw a picture of their favorite part.
grace - Red, my K love letter hunts. I say a letter, count to 15 or 20 each child needs to go found that letter around the room and put their finger on it. It's a quick game for fun
Kathleen - In the Lessons Bank there is a post about a sort of Mother's Day festival with an island theme, including decorations, gifts, songs, etc. Just go to http://teachers.net/lessons and search "Mother's Day" to locate the Kindergarten Island Fever Mother's Day post. Leslie, is that the one you were talking about a minute ago?
bordercollies - Red- also you can act out nursery rhymes
meeha/ece/tx - grace ... what a neat game idea!
Leslie PreK - Yes, Kathleen that is the one,,,it really gave some great ideas!
Kathleen - Leslie, it sure is a complete plan!
Rosie - I love that game Grace - you could also do it with the sounds
grace - meeha, thanks. It's quick, and fun.
Red - Grace great idea, thanks :)
Kathleen - I read in one of the mailrings about someone making die-cut letters to spell Mom, mounting them on paper or cardboard, with child's picture inside the "o" in Mom.
grace - rosie, good idea
Gumbo - I like that idea, Kat......
Kathleen - My very simple perfumed bath salts "recipe" is posted in the Lessons Bank, just go to http://teachers.net/lessons and search "bath salts."
meeha/ece/tx - the ec mailring had the terra cotta flower pot filled with plaster -- pen cap set in plaster while wet ... cover plaster with moss ... wrap flower around pen with florist tape, put pen in cap -- pretty table decoration, nice gift!
Red - Kathleen, I don't know the game "Doggie, doggie, who has your bone" Is that like Who stole the cookie fro the cookie jar?
grace - Good luck to you Red. I think you will enjoy K.
Leslie PreK - I also have the children paint portraits of their moms and attach this interview...My Mom: looks her best when _______, likes to nibble________, cooks the best________, likes to go to _________, is special because_________
Red - Thanks grace, I do love teaching, I can't wait to have my own class. Hopefuuly shortly after grad school
meeha/ece/tx - Red ... do you have a "bag of trick" for each grade level you go to yet? it is a good idea to have three or four bags with tried and true activities to fill in for extra minutes ...
Rosie - Red just a note about subbing in K - the kids really want everything done exactly like their teacher and they ALL want to help you with everything
Rosie - It is just one of their quirks
Kathleen - Red, one child, the doggie, sits back to group with eyes closed tight, "bone" placed on floor behind him/her. One child from group is selected to come up silently to take the bone and conceal it. Then the group chants, Doggie Doggie who has your bone? and the doggie turns and guesses.
grace - Rosie, is right. You will have plenty of assistances. They can be very critical if you do not do things like their teacher.
Gumbo - .....and the next day, they'll tell the teacher-----WE told her HOW to do it........LOL
Kathleen - There are some Mother's Day ideas in the 4/27/99 transcript for May themes in the EC/Primary section of http://teachers.net/archive
grace - Gumbo LOL how true!
Red - Meeha, thanks!! No I don't have that yet. Actually I've been subbing in spec ed. where the classes are very small and there are plenty of TAs to help In spec ed there doesn't seem to be much extra time...
Kathleen - Any other Mother's Day ideas to post here for the transcript
Gumbo - we're making the handprints, poem on heart cutout in center, kids sign it, we glue one of their pics in heart.......
Kathleen - Has anyone done anything with ceramic tiles to create gifts for Mother's Day?
meeha/ece/tx - all of the "hand" poems go over well ...
Gumbo - this year we're going to make pins, too......LOL......have no idea how they'll turn out......
meeha/ece/tx - my latest favorite is "this is the hand you used to hold when i was only ___ years old"
Gumbo - no, but I like that idea, kat....... :-)
Red - Thanks all. I hope all goes well tomorrow...
meeha/ece/tx - best wishes, Red! it should be great!
Leslie PreK - I once received a trivit made from a ceramic tyle. My son had painted his "design" on it and the teacher backed it with felt.
Gumbo - what kind of paints---acrylic/craft-type paints?
Kathleen - Oh, once we made ladybug pins, molded the plaster in a spoon, painted red with black dots, hot glued on the clasp, very cute
meeha/ece/tx - Kat -- cute!
Kathleen - acrylic I think
grace - Kathleen, love that idea. I love ladybugs, we go look for them in the garden every spring and fall.
Leslie PreK - They were acrylics, still have the trivit and wiped it down many times, perhaps she polyurethaned over the top?
Leslie PreK - Oh, Kathleen I like those, we have been exploring ladybugs for the last three weeks. My children are fascinated!
meeha/ece/tx - Leslie ... has your class read "I Love ladybugs"?
Leslie PreK - No, Meeha, tell me more!
meeha/ece/tx - I'm trying to remember some of the text ... it was from DLM in one of their 1980s curriculums ... I can hug my mommy and i can hug my daddy, but I can't hug a ladybug!
Gumbo - well, gotta go cut out pics for the gifts.....I kill 2 birds with one stone and make father's day gifts at the same time since we're not in school by then.......bye, ya'll........
meeha/ece/tx - how much longer are you doing ladybugs, Leslie?
Leslie PreK - Our playground was a giant laboratory filled with ladybugs, so we made bug catchers...since then a local elementary released 80,000 ladybugs to celebrate earth day...now we are really overrun by the little creatures!
meeha/ece/tx - how exciting, Lesile!
grace - What a great way to celebrate Earth Day
bordercollies - BTW a good father's day gift is a card made to look like a shirt with a pocket and put a slit in the pocket with a black man's comb taped in it.
Leslie PreK - Yes, this was completely emergent curriculum! Lots of fun!
CHANITA - i wanted to ask if anybody knows of a link to show how to make holiday boarders in school rooms
meeha/ece/tx - once upon a long time ago i did ladybug math where you make ladybugs with moving wings ... different #s of dots on the 2 sides ... x y = z kind of thing ...
grace - bordercollies, neat idea. I've done a shirt with a paper tie, but the comb is great and inexpensive
meeha/ece/tx - cute idea, bordercollie!
Leslie PreK - meeha, your ideas are always so good...thanks for sharing.
bordercollies - REAL cheap way to get your combs is when the photographer comes, keep the combs that are used for individual kids. Soak them in alchohol and keep till you need them for the cards!
Leslie PreK - bordercollies, that is a great idea, those always get tossed out!
grace - Super idea, the photographer was just at school a couple weeks ago. I'll remember that for next year
CHANITA - i need a new board idea for mothers day
meeha/ece/tx - okay, since we went there, are there other ideas to share for fathers' day?
meeha/ece/tx - can't hurt to plan ahead! especially since many of our kids won't be in classes then ... we can be prepared ahead of time!
grace - We pick a day close to the end of school for donuts with dad.
bordercollies - Chanita- how about animal mothers and their babies and what they are called like Dog-Puppy Horse-Foal Sheep- Lamb etc...
meeha/ece/tx - Chanita ... school or daycare setting? age of the kids? particular room theme?
meeha/ece/tx - i was just thinking ... a big award (the circle with ruffled ribbon and ribbon streamers kind of thing) with a lift-up button ... would read "...and the mother of the year is ..." lift the button and a mirror would show the mother ...
grace - meeha, what do you do for dad?
grace - great idea meeha
meeha/ece/tx - grace ... i never have done for dads ... we're out of school waaaayyyyyy early! might just do the 'father of the year' as noted below! :-) (new ideas just pop in at times!)
Leslie PreK - We usually have a Man In My Life breakfast during the school year..I do a People Magazine cover; Cut and past the logo at the top, children draw their special guy and then on the back I do an interview
meeha/ece/tx - Leslie ... that sounds kind of interesting!
grace - We are in school until June 9th, which is sort of close to dad's day
bordercollies - I just tell the kids to save it for dad for father's day and mark on the calendar that they make each month when father's day is in June
grace - my server just went goofy on me. Leslie great idea!
Leslie PreK - The dads have always liked it, but the best thing I ever did was to record the children talking about their dads one on one with me. Sent the tapes home with the dads and I can't tell you how many told me they had tears on their way to work!
Kathleen - I've decorated 8 by 8 ceramic tiles with nautical pics for Dads, kids finger paint ocean and sky, glue on flet for boat, white triangle sail, fluorescent yellow sparkly little pom pom for sun, sponge paint white clouds
Kathleen - Leslie, that sounds precious, the tape
grace - kathleen, how cute! what type of paint do you use on the tiles
meeha/ece/tx - i think the tapes often mean more than we realize!
Kathleen - grace acrylic I think
Leslie PreK - Kathleen, we ordered those 5 minute casettes. They were perfect. Love the nautical tiles.
Kathleen - Oh, I hot glued rope around the tile to finish it, with enough loose at top for hanging
grace - do you put a sealer over the paint for protection?
Kathleen - grace, I didn't but I understand I should have.
Kathleen - They came out pretty, and the kids did the work (except for the hot glued rope)
Leslie PreK - It's the end of the year and we still have so many ideas...amazing :)
Kathleen - Leslie, it's amazing we've lived this long to talk about it!
meeha/ece/tx - if the kiddos can write with a fair degree of competence, you could do a craft stick puzzle where you tape several together and they decorate a message (I love you dad ...... etc.) remove tape when dry and put all in an envelope/card to the intended .....
grace - Well, I am still trying to get back on schedule after spring break so its time for me to say goodnight. Talk to you all tomorrow. Have a great day at school!
meeha/ece/tx - for moms or dads ... or other events ... if you have access to fair sized (fist -sized or slightly larger) river rocks (smooth surface), the kids can paint them with tempera, you spray with a clear varnish -- make nice paperweights -- leslie, these could be ladybugs, too!
Kathleen - Or other animals
Leslie PreK - Sorry, I'm so tired my eyes are closing...and I think I've run out of ideas. As always, it's been wonderful chatting :) Yes, Meeha, more ladybug ideas thanks!
meeha/ece/tx - mom and i have done about 60 of them up as garden markers over the past 2 years -- used acrylic paints then ...
Kathleen - someone posted in the mailring about a cute card with the wording: my love for you grows and grows and the card is long (vertically) and accordian folded, with a loooooong stem, and flower blossom at top
meeha/ece/tx - that is a cute card, Kathleen!
Kathleen - The card unfolds to reveal the flower "growing"
meeha/ece/tx - could do that with a hand-print flower and leaves ... a finger trail of paint for the lllllloooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggg stem! :-)
Kathleen - ah, yes, that would be great
meeha/ece/tx - i might just get out the fingerpaint and start that one tomorrow! that sounds great!
Kathleen - could be a much larger card done that way
Kathleen - hi rgray, ready to share some ideas for Mother's Day?
Kathleen - meeha and I have about exhausted our repetoire of Mother's Day ideas, do you have any to add?
thunder Ü - i missed everything....sorry...we are makinf flower magnets with child pic in the middle..
meeha/ece/tx - Kathleen ... I think i've about hit the end of my ideas ... be sure to reference previous year's discussions -- seems like last year we did a similar session ... is it still archived?
Kathleen - thunder, gumbo was saying she puts the pic in the middle of child's cut out handprint and laminates. just another idea
thunder Ü - that is what we are doing.....gluing to a stick and putting it into a potted plant
Kathleen - I'd really like to try the mini-flower pot filled with plaster, with pen cap inserted as pen holder, embellished with silk flower, "moss" to cover plaster
thunder Ü - Kathleen....I have seen them they are sooooo cute..
meeha/ece/tx - Kathleen, that one sounds fun ... may save it for Valentine's day next year ...
Janel - Just out of curiosity...is there a way to get a log of these meetings?
Kathleen - thunder, I wish I could see one before I attempt it. And meeha is attempting handprints in plaster done with the loose plaster in a balloon, then child makes the impression until the plastic forms
thunder Ü - not much a 4 year old could do in making.....would be fun for afterschool kids.
meeha/ece/tx - ...or maybe a thank you for volunteer moms!
thunder Ü - I have done the hand prints made with dental impresion material......
Janel - Oh ok...thanks!
Kathleen - thunder, do you have a dentist in the family??
meeha/ece/tx - thunder -- is that material expensive?
thunder Ü - when material sets tou poor dental stone into the mold......our moms cry every christmas.
Kathleen - There is a link to the Archive over in the left frame, too
thunder Ü - i bye it cheaper than the dentest......all my info ia at school
meeha/ece/tx - thunder -- can you post it on the ec chatboard or mailring tomorrow, please?
thunder Ü - it is about 80.00 for 24 children...this year i had material left over....
Kathleen - thunder, maybe you could post the info on the EC chatboard?
meeha/ece/tx - wonder if doc might donate ... have to talk to my sister...
thunder Ü - now i will look real silly...everytime i try to post something it never works.....but i will try again
thunder Ü - I tried to get Dr. to....but he said he could not get it cheaper....and would not. but he has bailed me out a few times when i do not have enough stuff.
Kathleen - Goodnight, thanks for sharing!
