milymo - What is EIP?
janniebug - they are one step above sp. ed.
milymo - Paulie, are you one of the ones that play Bookworm?
milymo - Would they be the ones that are often in Title programs?
janniebug - that is why i am here. been teaching 31 yrs. Getting ideas from others is what its all about
Paulie - I don't even know where Bookwork is
milymo - It's a downloadable game. Very addictive.
milymo - Hi PAJARazul!
milymo - Are you out of school for the year, jannie?
janniebug - yes, and planning for next year
Paulie - Hi {AJAR are u a preschool or Primary teacher?
janniebug - i hate to ask, but is your school using Max Thompson
Paulie - I meant Bookworm
Paulie - what is max Thompson?
tina - I teach first in OK. How about you?
milymo - Ours isn't. I haven't heard of Max Thompson.
milymo - Hi tina!
milymo - I am teaching second this next year.
janniebug - oh, my! just go to the chat board. that is all we hear
Paulie - what chatboard?
janniebug - on Teachers.Net-----our school is implementing it
janniebug - it is called Learning Focused Schools
Paulie - which board I have not heard about it
milymo - Guess I'll have to look closer next time I'm on the chatboard.
meeha/ece/tx - Howdy!
Paulie - hi meeha looks like u got back to TX k
janniebug - When you first log into this site, it gives several places that you can choose from. one is chat board
meeha/ece/tx - Hi Paulie -- Yep ... home today! ..... well, to my parents' house last night late and to my place this afternoon!
meeha/ece/tx - Hi Tina!
Paulie - mauce talked to me twice in AIM meeha thanks
meeha/ece/tx - YW, Paulie!
Paulie - which board janniebug?
milymo - Hi meeha! ltns! Hope you had a great vacation!
Paulie - YW?
Paulie - Sat is the first official day of summer
Paulie - hi Carol I got your paper yesterday -- thanks! I read it and enjoyed learning about it
meeha/ece/tx - Carol, Jen, Josie! Welcome to this evening's early childhood/primary teachers' meeting!
Carol/pre K/WI - I'm glad you got it
meeha/ece/tx - Josie -- yes, I've been finished since 31 of May!
milymo - We finished June 4.
Paulie - I was gonna write u a email but sicne we wre mtg tonight I figured I would tell u in "person" lol
Josie - How are you preparing for next year this summer? Or should I say, are you preparing?
Jen of PA - ok, I have had 3 years as long term sub....supposedly (haven't heard anything except from my principal) they are calling all the long term subs in from this year for a "talk" don't know whether it's formal or informal. The principal didn't know either
Carol/pre K/WI - I've been out of school since May 16th.
Jen of PA - we finished June 13th
meeha/ece/tx - (((((Jen))))) good luck!
Paulie - do u know any teacher that doesn't prepare over the summer?
vicki/kdg/mo - Josie, I've been working on a schedule incorporating my lnaguage arts with science and social studies
tina - Josie-I started "Mosaic of Thought" today.
Jen of PA - thanks meeha...I am being positive or at least trying to be
Paulie - welcome amy did you join the K board at Tnet? there is an amy there posting BUT she has taught before
amy - any other K teachers out there?
vicki/kdg/mo - I teach K
Josie - I am going to buy that this week~ I have wanted to for a while.
meeha/ece/tx - Josie -- I'm attending several hours of classes this summer ... and will try to get into the school building to set up my classroom (different building, same class), trying to do some long-range planning
amy - i have posted a few things on there, but ive noticed another amy on board, too
milymo - I just finished a year of k, but I am going back to second.
Carol/pre K/WI - Ithink we all try to make change over the summer
Paulie - mauce and JenTX will probably be here they both teach K
Jen of PA - THEN took my daughter to her 15 month check up and the pediatrician wants me to run his day care!
Josie - Vicki, I would love to hear of your plans!
meeha/ece/tx - -- long-range plans are difficult when I don't know the levels of the children coming in -- and I'll have probably 11 new kiddos in the fall.
Paulie - you might want to add somethign onto amy then for your name
Paulie - that other amy is also from TX
meeha/ece/tx - Last year the ability levels ranged from 10 months to about 7 years! Talk about individualized learning plans! LOL
amy - and so am i...lol
milymo - Josie, I am taking a couple masters classes and working on a Behavior Support Team over the summer.
Paulie - meeha, meet amy I talked ot her a lot the week you were gone
vicki/kdg/mo - Josie, They are based on the Harcourt materials several of us use. I posted them today on the k charboard.
Paulie - I know amy that is why I thought you should change yoru name a bit
meeha/ece/tx - Hi, amy! Pleased to meet you. I get to work with preschool-aged children who have "special needs" (((as if they ALL don't have special needs!)))
Paulie - meeha . . . amy is a new first time K teacher
milymo - "Differentiated instruction" - That is supposed to be our year long focus this year!
Josie - Does anyone have to take in-service days in the summer? I have 15!!! days worth! At least we get a stipend.
vicki/kdg/mo - milymo, I started my masters class today
amy - i might just find a name i have wanted to use instead...haha..
Jen of PA - we have 3 (IF I get hired)
Paulie -
meeha/ece/tx - Josie -- I don't HAVE to ... and they generally find 20 hours I HAVE to take in the school year even if I do ... but I've selected a few good classes this year!
vicki/kdg/mo - Josie, I'll be in two days of inservice tomorrow and Thursday. We also get a stipend
Paulie - wow Josie hope it is somethign good
milymo - Where are you taking your classes? What college, vicki?
vicki/kdg/mo - University of Mo.
Paulie - Jen u don't have a job yet?
amy - at least you get a stipend, josie, for your inservice days.
Jen of PA - Paulie...LOL...no
meeha/ece/tx - I've been reading a good book for the past few days ... THE CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS ... Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth
tina - You gals from Texas and Missouri ought to look into Great Expectations here in OK. Great stuff!
Paulie - did u just graduate jen?
meeha/ece/tx - The authors are Stanley Greenspan and Serena Wieder -- GOOD stuff!
milymo - I am doing the distance learning program through Marygrove in Michigan. I have these two classes and then two more and I will be DONE!
Carol/pre K/WI - Vicki masters in what? I just finished mine.
amy - what are you getting your masters in?
Paulie - Congrats Carol
Jen of PA - Paulie...yea back in 1998 :( :(
vicki/kdg/mo - Elementary Ed with a certificate in reading
meeha/ece/tx - I wish teachers who work with the general population would read the information in this book ... or some related information (sensory dysfunction and how it impacts learning and behavior) ... such practical information -- and user-friendly!
vicki/kdg/mo - Carol, what is yours in?
meeha/ece/tx - Jen of PA -- if it helps you feel better, I looked for 8 years for a job in MI before b eing hired in TX!!!
Carol/pre K/WI - meeha, I have been at a training on problem solving with preschooler and the one presenter recommended his book
Jen of PA - thanks meeha
milymo - My masters is in the Art of Teaching.
vicki/kdg/mo - Meeha, Would this help with students on the austims spectrum
Carol/pre K/WI - Vicki, Master of Education Professional Development
meeha/ece/tx - Carol, it is rich with examples, easy to understand examples and application information -- and I've not even gotten to the "application" part of the book.
Jen of PA - problem solving....I want to write the book!
Paulie - Jen so you have not taught at all?
Josie - Gotta go! Major plumbing problems!
meeha/ece/tx - vicki -- absolutely! a LOT of the information is specifically geared to working with children with autism!
meeha/ece/tx - the book is actually written to parents more than teachers!
vicki/kdg/mo - Good Luck Josie
Paulie - milymo what does that mean "the art of teaching"
meeha/ece/tx - I have two or three parents I want to share the book with after I finish reading it ... may buy a "library" copy when i find it at the 1/2 price books tore!
Carol/pre K/WI - T
Paulie - nite Josie
meeha/ece/tx - come back if you can, Josie!
Carol/pre K/WI - my computer is acting up
milymo - My classes cover things like models of effective teaching, working with parents, inclusion, collaborative action research, multiple intelligences and learning styles...
Jen of PA - Paulie....I have done 1 yr full time day subbing (means I was assigned to one building and was there each day...the 2 yrs long term subbing in learning support and then this year was in 2nd grade
Paulie - Jen I am also looking for a new job I subbed 8 long years, taught 6 and moved back to WA and haven't had a job in two years
vicki/kdg/mo - meeha, Could you repost the name of the book?
Paulie - well that is a start jen I am looking too
meeha/ece/tx - mily, how much of the information you're getting now do you find "useful" in your classroom? I definitely found the masters' level of study more relevant to my teaching than the undergrad classes.
meeha/ece/tx - vicki -- THE CHILD WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Paulie - I taught all day K one year, first one year, 2nd one year, half day K with two sessions 2 yers and 4th gr one year
milymo - Also, motivating learners, authentic assessment, using the Internet, and Classroom management.
meeha/ece/tx - Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth -- authors S.I. Greenspan and S. Wieder
Carol/pre K/WI - I think we could all write a problem solving book
Jen of PA - since I don't know whether this so called "talk" is formal or informal.....I don't know how to prepare for it. THe Principal said "Just come ready to share what you did this year, your goals, etc"
Paulie - sounds interesting milymo
Paulie - lol Carol
Paulie - well maybe it is an interview when does this happen Jen?
vicki/kdg/mo - Jen, I would prepare as if it was a formal interview. Show your interest and professionalism!
milymo - meeha, I think the masters classes are much more relavent. It's nice to have a classroom to go back to to "try out" what I am learning.
meeha/ece/tx - Jen -- be sure you have your "professional vita", any portfolio of work, know the district's philosophy of education, etc. Be Positive! Be Confident! Be Radiant!
meeha/ece/tx - mily -- that is what I found, too.
Paulie - lol meeha
Jen of PA - I created a problem solving format this year....wanting to write a book for it
Paulie - amy . . . why so quiet tell us what you ahve been doing
Carol/pre K/WI - Our presenter Betsy Evan wrote the textbook we used You can't Come to My Birthday Party
meeha/ece/tx - (BUT ... I still found that there is "too much theory" in the education of teachers ... and all of it slanted toward things that have really had limited success in the past!
Jen of PA - July 1st or 2nd
milymo - It makes some of our inservices quite boring though, because they go over a lot of what we are learning in our master's classes.
Paulie - be sure to talk about that jen
Paulie - good luck Jen
Jen of PA - oh I will be talking about it! I will also be sharing what changes I'm planning to make with it
Jeanine - Jen, one suggestion I have for an interview is to visit the shcool systems website and visit the school's website. That really helped me to know what their philosphies and preferences were when I ineterviewed last year.
Jen of PA - professional vita?
Paulie - I picked up an application for a K job in Skamania county 21 miles from me today farming community school built on a hill but 7 miles out of the bigger town where I would ahve to live if I want to be closer
milymo - meeha, in my undergrad classes, there was a real push for "Whole Language" curriculums. I am finding that I work much better in a balanced literacy classroom.
Carol/pre K/WI - milymo I found the same thing when I was taking my master's classes
Paulie - Jen can u tell us a little more about it now?
Jen of PA - thanks Jeanine...I've been with this district for 5 yrs
milymo - Keeping my fingers crossed for you Paulie!
Paulie - now what makes balanced literacy different than whole language?
Jen of PA - good luck Paulie
vicki/kdg/mo - milymo, I had the same push for whole language. This was when the research was pointing to balanced. Wish the universities would catch up!
Paulie - hehe milymo boring inservices lol
Carol/pre K/WI - best of luck to you Paulie
Paulie - Jen don't think i will get it -- I don't drive. . .
Paulie - going to send in my application for practice anyway tho
vicki/kdg/mo - Paulie, I think balanced literacy includes more direct instruction with lots of language experiences
Jeanine - Paulie, I believe that whole language focuses more on the story first and much less on the phonics components. A balanced program provides both so that all learning styles are addressed.
milymo - I think there is more phonics included in balanced literacy. Is that correct?
milymo - I love my Four Blocks!
Paulie - well maybe how some people used it actually some people forgot phonics altogether with whole lang but it was supposed to be there all the time I feel that balanced literacy is a new name for wht they were supposed ot be doing all along
Jeanine - I believe four blocks offers a balanced literacy program too.
Jen of PA - well it breaks it down into steps for them...they first have to look at what they know, then what they need to find out, then they actually do the work either number sentence, picture, etc then they use all the above to write about it it's confusing to have to type it
Paulie - If you use Kid writing and Building Blocks in K you got balanced literacy
amy - sorry, the phone rang....i'd love to hear how you all implement the four blocks in your classroom!
meeha/ece/tx - brb ... phone call
Paulie - amy no 4 blocks in K just Building Blocks
Jen of PA - four blocks...don't know that one
vicki/kdg/mo - gotta go, my friend is ready for our evening walk..
Paulie - gosh u never heard of 4 Blocks?
amy - gotcha...Building Blocks is K...I got the book this week and am reading it now
meeha/ece/tx - see you soon, vicki!
Paulie - nite vicky
meeha/ece/tx - Hi, carolinagirl! Welcome to this evening's early childhood/primary teachers' meeting!
Paulie - great amy that was fast did u have it locally or order it?
amy - ordered it off Amazon
Jeanine - Paulie, I look at it like a triange, the base of whole language triangle is the story and the phonics componenets the small angle at the top. Phonics progams go the opposite way with the phonics potions at the base. I think they need to be equal.
amy - i think it will be a very helpful resource...
Jen of PA - ok, I heard of it but never SEEN it
carolinagirl - Hello everyone!
milymo - I remember reading articles in college like "Whole Language vs. Phonics." In my student teaching class, there was NO phonics component.
Paulie - did u check out that Tnet site I sent u amy on BB? That should give u good ideas as it was lesson plans
Jen of PA - what's the book called?
Paulie - Jeanine I never heard it explained that way
amy - yes, that is really helpful....ive added most all of the sites you listed to favorites...super and really helpful
Jeanine - Hello Carolina
meeha/ece/tx - I've really had minimal phonics training ... really appreciate what I've learned from programs like BUILDING BLOCKS, FOUR BLOCKS, and KID WRITING ... all seem to have a strong positive impact on early literacy!
Paulie - Month by Month Reading and Writing for Kindergarten
amy - mily, are you saying you haven't seen a class that hasn't used phonics at all?
Jeanine - Paulie, I don't know if that makes sense but that's how I view it.
tina - month by month phonics is a must-have for first grade!
Jen of PA - 4 blocks...is it good for 2nd grade?
Jeanine - Meeha, I want to learn more about Kid Writing this summer. Did you use it last year?
Paulie - well I have always ahd a bigger phonics approach no matter what you call the reading/writing literacy
tina - Jen-it's great for second
meeha/ece/tx - brb ... gotta go put clothes in the dryer so the kid doesn't rip my head off (GOD FORBID she have to fold any of MY clothes!)
Paulie - month by month Reading and writing is a K tool
Paulie - 4 blocks starts with first gr
milymo - I was raised on phonics and learned extremely well that way. In undergrad classes, my classrooms I observed had little in the way of phonics. When I went to teach, the districts used phonics and I just went with the flow.
Jen of PA - what's Kid Writing?
Paulie - meeha your exchange student will soon be gone lol
amy - how is 4 blocks diff.? like what do they do that building blocks does not have?
Paulie - a wodnerful program ot get kids engaged in writing very young
milymo - Jen, I love 4 blocks for second grade! In fact, it was after I read the 4 blocks book that teaching language arts really made sense to me!
Paulie - 4 blocks is structured a bit different into guided reading. writing, self selected reading and working with words
Jen of PA - well, IF I get the position that I'm hoping for it will be 2nd grade
Jeanine - I've hear Kid Writing is a wonderful apporach to teaching children writing. I think someon named Isabel something wrote the book and I've heard great things about it for all writing abilities (pre-K and up I believe)
tina - What I like about 4Blocks is that you can use most of your existing resources. Cheryl Sigmon's articles on T-Net are motivating.
meeha/ece/tx - okay ... back again!
Jeanine - Meeha, did you use Kid writing last year?
amy - i wish i had learned about these resources like Kid Writing, 4Blocks/Building Blocks in school...it would have been very helpful.
milymo - Building Blocks uses shared reading, predictable charts, journal writing, and morning message.
Jen of PA - we just got Kidspiration on the computer this year
meeha/ece/tx - Jeanine -- with the "population" in my classroom, I did not use anything like KidWriting or Building Blocks ... just introduced basic "letter sounds" and early skills.
meeha/ece/tx - we primarily focus on building ORAL language skills in my classroom ("Special Needs" Pre-School)
amy - mily, you must teach a younger age group, right?
tina - In the guide to 4blocks, it suggests using a timer for the mini-lessons. That helps me keep from trying to hold attention and pushes me to address the skill and move on!
meeha/ece/tx - tina -- I LIKE that idea! teach the point, don't beat it to death! thanks for the tip!
amy - i think the timer idea is good for alot of grade levels, not just with the 4Blocks approach!
milymo - I just taught k this year and i will be moving back to second.
Jeanine - Amy, to me, some of these are new. As a teacher, there's always something new and you just keep learning yourself. You don't have to adopt everything. But every now and then I find someting that sparks your interest and hopefully makes me more effective.
tina - Thanks, Meeha. Does anyone use story bits?
It's me. . .Paulie - http://www.kidwriting.homestead.com/
It's me. . .Paulie - that link is for Kid writing the author's home page
meeha/ece/tx - Jeanine -- that is SOOOO true! As a teacher, I find that the "eclectic" approach works well. I read and learn what I can that may help my students, keep what works and store the rest for future reference! What 'works' for me i make "mine" in the classroom!
milymo - My pm class this year did not function well until I started using a timer. I would have gone crazy without it!
tina - I teach in a rural Oklahoma town. I don't know how I stayed up on current trends without T-net.
Jeanine - Thanks Paulie and welcome back.
It's me. . .Paulie - thanks
amy - Paulie, I had that added to my favorites that you had listed before...thanks
It's me. . .Paulie - and u r welcome
It's me. . .Paulie - yes but someone else asked
meeha/ece/tx - with the preschoolers I work with we really work on auditory comprehension ... I'll read a page in a book, (or just a sentence), then ask a question about what we just read ... s-l-o-w-l-y we build the length of the selections ... building auditory comprehension helps prepare kiddos for reading comprehension!
milymo - T-net is how I learned about 4 blocks. For the most part, nobody in my district had heard about it yet.
It's me. . .Paulie -
Carol/pre K/WI - There is so much new information and I think we need to balance the needs of our kids and the new ideas
amy - i know that I am "free" to use what works best for me in my school, but one teacher said using Building Blocks has made all the difference in her class...so, I def. think I want to learn as much as I can about it
Jeanine - Tina, I agree! T.net is a wonderful resources for being aware of the latest trends and ideas. Love it!
It's me. . .Paulie - and 4 blocks baord ahs a wonderful resource where teachers submit plans in pdf form so you can download and even ahve some BB ones too
It's me. . .Paulie - yup if all the K classes used BB and all the rest 4 blocks they would see great strides
Jen of PA - ok, I typed four blocks in at amazon .com and what title am I looking for?
amy - jen, what grade are you hoping to teach did you say?
Jen of PA - 2nd grade
Jeanine - Meeha, I have a hard time asking too many questions during the story cause my kids actually say, "Can't we just read the story already?" How do you get around that?
meeha/ece/tx - Jen -- check out http://www.wfu.edu/~cunningh/fourblocks/
Carol/pre K/WI - T.net is the absolutely the greatest it saves me lots of research and planning time
meeha/ece/tx - or http://www.four-blocks.com
meeha/ece/tx - or ... http://www.readinglady.com/4blocks/
meeha/ece/tx - ... or www.k111.k12.il.us/lafayette/fourblocks/general_information.htm
milymo - I saw huge differences in my student's self esteems using Four Blocks!
It's me. . .Paulie - go here http://www.teachers.net/gazette/JUN03/sigmon.html it tells u all the resources for 4 blocks by name on the left side
meeha/ece/tx - http://www.evsc.k12.in.us/curriculum/reading/fblocks.htm
It's me. . .Paulie - lol I see meeha was busy too
meeha/ece/tx - http://www.carsondellosa.com/fourblocks.htm
amy - does this approach take any more "effort" or planning on the teacher's end?
Jen of PA - thanx meeha
It's me. . .Paulie - the Gazette has archives about 4 blocks too
Jen of PA - thanx Paulie
meeha/ece/tx - You should be able to purchase the FOUR BLOCKS book at a local "teacher store"!
It's me. . .Paulie - welcome
meeha/ece/tx - the information we talk about this evening will be archived at http://www.teachers.net/archive ... give it a day or two to be posted!
It's me. . .Paulie - amy there is always lots of effort to exude at first Then it becomes natural
meeha/ece/tx - Jen, there are SEVERAL prior meetings about FOUR BLOCKS and BUILDING BLOCKS archived here already!
It's me. . .Paulie - Yes they got the last two meeting archived recently
milymo - For my k class, I had a reading time where they could self-select books, and "read". I had a visitor form they other k class in my room one day and told him that he could go to the carpet and "read". He said that he didn't now how, and when I told him that he could "read" the pictures, you should have seen how his face lit up!
meeha/ece/tx - mily, how special! you MADE a reader of him!
It's me. . .Paulie - yup that is fun reading pictures because you can say anything!
amy - mily, that is SO neat! that's how reading begins!
tina - Amy-I think it has stream-lined my "planning". I have a loose schedule for certain activities, like "making words" and "guess the covered word" activities on certain days.
amy - that is encouraging, tina...
milymo - Amy, I found it easier than what I was doing before. I felt very unsure of the way I was teaching before 4 blocks.
tina - My favorite time of day-as well as my students' favorite is Self-Selected Reading. We LOVE it!W
amy - tina, are you saying that you will do "guess the covered word" on Monday, for instance, "Making Words" on Tuesday, etc.
Jen of PA - I needed to medle writing more this year
amy - how long of a period do you devote for SSR?
It's me. . .Paulie - milymo u can start with the phonics part in first names and then add more each week
Jen of PA - medle=model, WOAH
It's me. . .Paulie - I meant amy
tina - Yes-Amy. I do making words activities twice per week.
It's me. . .Paulie - in half day K there is no time specified for SSR
Jeanine - Sorry, I got to go, my hubby needs the computer. Good night.
amy - i thought that's what you meant - just checking!...
It's me. . .Paulie - I love medle hehehe
amy - i know my school has 15 minutes of Rest, Relax or Read time...
It's me. . .Paulie - is yours alld ay K amy?
amy - yes
It's me. . .Paulie - so that is good to do right after lunch then
Jen of PA - hehe
milymo - I felt like I knew each individual student and his/her strengths and weaknesses better than I did before I started using 4 Blocks.
amy - when did you start using the 4Blocks in your class?
Jen of PA - just modeling to find mistakes
milymo - brb - getting hubby off to work.
It's me. . .Paulie - in first gr
It's me. . .Paulie - you start liek the second day of school with BB first is too harried
milymo - Amy, 3 years ago! Started experimenting the year before that.
milymo - Now I'll brb!
It's me. . .Paulie - oic you meant how long ago Thought u meant in a school year lol
amy - as someone told me, alot of the learning with what works is just trial and error...lol
tina - When I do the read-aloud model for SSR, I often do not interject any comprehension questions until the end. (Someone asked about that earlier.) I try to read at least four read-alouds per day, if I'm not in a chapter book.
It's me. . .Paulie - yup amy and after u use it awhile it will become so natural you won't even realize that you are doing each component
It's me. . .Paulie - by the way, so you know you can get free journals by going to http://www.starfall.com
It's me. . .Paulie - they will mail free to your school all they want in return is some feedback
It's me. . .Paulie - If you put in order now they will be there for the beginning of school
Carol/pre K/WI - good information to know Paulie about the journals
Jen of PA - now that (www.starfall.com) I know about! It's great!
It's me. . .Paulie - yes all teachers can use FREE stuff
amy - what is starfall again? i dont think i know it
It's me. . .Paulie - clcik on the link amy
tina - I ordered starfall last week. I liked the online movies-games were a bit slow i thought.
tina - So you like the journals, PAULIE?]
It's me. . .Paulie - but u can't knowck free stuff
amy - and this is really free?
It's me. . .Paulie - friend ahs them I am not employed now so can't order
It's me. . .Paulie - yup
amy - no hidden fees or membership, etc.?
tina - It says the shipping is free too.
Carol/pre K/WI - Paulie what are the journals like
It's me. . .Paulie - nope no gimmicks they do want u to give opinion that is all
It's me. . .Paulie - you ahve to check the site Carol I forgot sicne I could not order them yet but friend did and likes them
amy - hmmm...interesting
tina - Carol-there are sample pages on the website.
amy - i'm always afraid to try out these "free" things - you just never know!
Carol/pre K/WI - thanks for the imput
tina - I hear you, Amy. My husband signs up for the "FREE" stuff and some how it ends up costing us. I hardly let him answer the phone anymore.
amy - i am taking about 30 boxes of things to my new classroom this week! i am excited!
milymo - I ordered the Starfall Journals this year and it's exactly the way they say! Free! All they ask for is your feedback on their materials.
meeha/ece/tx - amy -- how exciting for you!
It's me. . .Paulie - wow amy u ahve collected a lot then
tina - Sounds great Amy!
amy - yes i have! and now it is leaving my house and finally going into a classroom! more room in the house for me now!
It's me. . .Paulie - did you like using them milymo ? and how long did they last?
It's me. . .Paulie - you are very fortunate to get a job right out of college amy!
tara2ndgrade - hello all.....is everyone happy school is out!
amy - i really am....i only know one other person who has a job and the others havent even been called for interviews yet at all
meeha/ece/tx - Hi, tara! break is nice ... but I'm missing my kiddos now!
tara2ndgrade - oh really......I don't think I am. Not yet anyway
Carol/pre K/WI - I've been off for a month already and miss my kids too
amy - i'll p[rob. be one of those that cries when my kids leave the school year...lol!
tara2ndgrade - I taught PK last year
milymo - I started using them at the end of the year, so I wasn't able to finish them. If you used one take home book and did the corresponding journal pages in a week, it would take you five weeks. Then, there are 10 additional take home booklets. The take-home booklets are in color!
tina - I don't miss'em. I see most of 'em at the pool every day. "Mrs. L-Watch me dive, swim, flip, sink!
It's me. . .Paulie - o neato
meeha/ece/tx - Carol, summer is hard for me -- but I stay in touch with several of my families even through the summer ... some for several years after they leave my class!
tara2ndgrade - They have moved me to 2nd this year.....I think I am looking forward to it
amy - thats cute, tina!
tara2ndgrade - I ordered the starfall stuff for next year
tara2ndgrade - hehehehe tina
It's me. . .Paulie - and drown? lol
Jen of PA - I cried this year
meeha/ece/tx - mily -- I just ordered a set ... will try it with my "more advanced" kiddos this fall and see what happens!
scrappy - My goodness, Amy you sure have a lot. I have a few rubbermaid small containers worth of things but most of those are books.
tara2ndgrade - I was shooing them out the door this year!
meeha/ece/tx - Hi scrappy! Welcome to this evening's early childhood/primary teachers' meeting!
scrappy - I'm new to teaching and second grade and I just don't know what to buy.
mudbug - sorry , my computer shut down
tina - tara-I've been dreaming of 2nd grade.
It's me. . .Paulie - wb mudbug
tara2ndgrade - I didn't have a good year
amy - ive been buying stuff since high school, really....i'm glad to finally have somewhere else to put all this stuff!
tara2ndgrade - meaning you want to go to 2nd or just dreaming
Carol/pre K/WI - I go back to the neighborhood and the full year classroom at once every two weeks.
scrappy - I'm so excited, nervous- I dream about my classroom every night. Its scary.
meeha/ece/tx - scrappy -- don't buy until you know the grade level you'll be working with! (general books okay, but .....)
It's me. . .Paulie - 2nd graders still can use centers buy them puppets too and rubber stamps
milymo - I helped them complete the first two weeks of journal pages and by the third week, they could do them on their own. Fill in the blank type stuff. (Still talking about Starfall.)
amy - what did you teach before they moved you to second, tara?
tara2ndgrade - I am just finishing up an 8(g) grant that I got this year
tina - Check into the 4blocks stuff, for sure, SCRAPPY
tara2ndgrade - I taught PreK for 6 years
amy - me, too scrappy...it IS scary!!!!!!!!!!
It's me. . .Paulie - u wrote the grant yourself?
tara2ndgrade - I can't even get to my classroom!!!
scrappy - Meeha- I was hired to teach 2nd. We do use 4blocks and that's what has me so overwhelmed.
tara2ndgrade - yep....one of 3 this year
It's me. . .Paulie - meeha. . .scrappy said 2nd gr
tara2ndgrade - I wrote 2 Drew Grants and 1 8G
scrappy - The district where I did my student teaching and subbing didn't use 4blocks so I'm trying to learn everything about it this summer.
It's me. . .Paulie - wow what were the other two grants for and were they local grants?
mudbug - is 4 blocks similar to balanced literacy
meeha/ece/tx - scrappy -- there is a wealth of information on 4-Blocks here at teachers.net!
It's me. . .Paulie - what are Drew grants?
It's me. . .Paulie - 4 blocks is balanced literacy!
tara2ndgrade - They were all for technology....the drews were from the Drew Foundation one for $7000 and one for $5000 one for me and one for a friend
tina - Ha! I thought 8G meant $8,000. What is it?
amy - scrappy, i dont know anything on 4Blocks/Building Blocks either and am just learning about it...
tara2ndgrade - The 8(g) was for........are you ready!
mudbug - did ya'll see on teachersnet that walmart gives 20 dollar gift certificates every month
tara2ndgrade - $100,000.00
meeha/ece/tx - no ... to whom -- and how do we access it?
milymo - I thought that the Teacher's Guide to the Four Blocks was an easy read! You know how you sometimes "see" lightbulbs turning on in your students' brains? That's what happened to me when I read the 4 Blocks book!
scrappy - Yeah, I just love this website. I have learned so much in the last 2 weeks.
It's me. . .Paulie - no
tina - WOW,TARA!
amy - mudbug, i saw that....but, i dont know how to get that info!
tara2ndgrade - Actually the 100,000 was for my school for a technology lab.
meeha/ece/tx - tara ... you've got your hands full! how tough is it to administer a 100K grant?
mudbug - me either, I just keep writing and asking about it
tara2ndgrade - tell me that I have not been busy
amy - Tara, that's exciting!!!!!!!!!!
It's me. . .Paulie - 100,000,00??????????
tara2ndgrade - HARD>>>>>>I didn't think that I would have so much trouble spending that much money
tina - What is an 8G grant?
tara2ndgrade - Oh.....it is a grant that you can write here in Louisiana
Jen of PA - ok I did it! I ordered the book for 4 blocks!
mudbug - I got a $2000 grant from my parish and I'm not having any trouble spending it
tara2ndgrade - Our whole prek program is under the 8G grant format
tara2ndgrade - what did you write it for mudbug
mudbug - tara--are you from louisiana too??
tara2ndgrade - you said parish....so you must be in LA too
scrappy - I just finished the Teachers Guide to 4Blocks last week. Now, I'm reading the Guided Reading book and the Classrooms that Work book at the same time.

tara2ndgrade - I wish I had $20 a week from WalMart
It's me. . .Paulie - well I think the 20 a week is for different people
mudbug - what are you spending your money on tara
tara2ndgrade - oh darn
It's me. . .Paulie - must be local grants
Jen of PA - how do I find out about grants?
scrappy - Mudbug- How does that work. Do you have to justify why you need the money and what you'll use the items for?
mudbug - yes, mine is
tina - Paulie-I had just been to a Great Expectations workshop called Art Smart. I sent along the brochure of that and requested the $ for art supplies.
It's me. . .Paulie - wonderign that myself jen

It's me. . .Paulie - oic and what kind of art things did yoru kids do?
tara2ndgrade - and wiring.....lots of wiring
mudbug - my parish gets money from local companies and you just have to justify as to why you need what you want!!!
tina - Amy-OH my NO! Mine was a one-time deal and I was happy. I'd feel like I won the lottery with $20 per week!
tara2ndgrade - I found out though the Grant Dept at the school board office
