Djinn - Hello Everyone! Welcome to the ece chatroom. Tonight we will be talking about math.
kidbiz - We use addison wesley in my district.
Yonder - no series. We draw from Math Their Way and Aimes
k - Anyone use MathLand?
Jules - We use Anytime Math, I don't care for it.
Djinn - I teach Kindergarten and use a lot of Math Their Way -
Djinn - Jules -we are using anytime, but not very effectively
Katharine - I have Mathland. My district bought it for everybody.
Doug - k- I piloted mathland kept the materials and our district bought Quest
kidbiz - I have also used the Box it and Bag it ideas.
Laurie/AR - We are using Scott Foresman/ Addison Wesley for this year only. Next year we are using Investigations in Number, Data, and Space.
Katharine - I teach 1-2. I like the Mathland manips because they are very MathTheir Way, but came all ready to go.
Djinn - Right now I am prepping my first unit from Math Excursions - K Heinemann
Katharine - But Mathland doesn't reach many of the state standards. If any
Djinn - What kinds of center materials are you using? Is there something that is working well for you?
Mary K&1 - Am I the only one who doesn't use any particular program?
k - This is true katharine. I taught kinder this year and it didn't cover addition or graphing (i think) -- we had to ad-lib
Sandy/K/MO - my kids love the pattern block puzzles
S.G. - Hey everybody, how about home made manipulatives?
Sandy/K/MO - no Mary... I don't have any books.. :-)
Katharine - Djinn, for centers all the Maththeir way games are perfect. I have them in shoe boxes
Yonder - You aren't alone, Mary.
Doug - Want to laugh at our district? We (in K) have so many benchmarks and problem of the weeks that we basically just test kids...its very sad
Laurie/AR - My kids liked to play with Attribute Blocks. We have this neet game they play. They love pattern blocks.
Jules - my kids liked patterning too, pattern links, puzzles, etc
Casper - I use Math Their Way...most manipulatives are homemade...
Djinn - S.G. I use a lot of dyed macaroni! That way they can glue and record patterns
S.G. - Spray paint lima beans on one side only, throw on table use for add and subtraction.
Jules - Doug, you aren't alone. We test too much too!
Katharine - Mary, we haven't anything good to use. I've saved a workbook for 8 years so I can make dittos from it!!!
Laurie/AR - We use dice to make addition sentences at the beginning of the year. Soon after though I fizzle out of ideas.
Sandy/K/MO - we do a dice game with the links... they like to play that and dice addition bingo
kidbiz - Dominos are fun to use also for addition and subtraction.
Jules - Stamps are fun for patterning too. They have these really neat jumbo stamps at art stores that come in all different shapes, designs.
S.G. - I made math boxes using everything you can think of , button, beans, screw, shells, beads..
Casper - Does anyone have a sequence that they teach with?
Doug - Djinn- any nice good starting points for K? I like to start with information about ourselves
Marcia - I have used dice games allot. So many to choose from.
Linda - Our teachers hate Mathland.
Yonder - S.G. Those are my favorites too. When i teach the numbers, I use them so they get the concept of addends.
Katharine - We use dominos to make addition sentences too.
k - We used the GEMS Treasures Unit to collect math mateirals to add to our existing program. It was great to have so many authentic, personal manipulatives
Laurie/AR - What do you have them do with he math boxes, S.G.
Djinn - I am going to start with All about Me this year and then go into buttons and sorting
Katharine - Linda, I hate mathland too. I just like the 'toys'
S.G. - Yes, yonder. Patterns , more and less, one more than one less than etc.
Casper - I call those junk boxes...
Djinn - Because or standards have expanded I am going to have to Up the ante on my program this year
Casper - You can do patterning, addition, subtraction,... The kiddos bring items from home (more personal)
Sandy/K/MO - we start with M&M's counting and graphing
Mary K&1 - I teach all math using manipulatives of all sorts - never do "papers" - at the end of the year, I gave the kids an addition paper just to see what would happen, and every child did it completely correctly except for one child who has some serious learning disabilities - I found it to quite interesting.
Jules - Do any of you use the Everyday Counts program?
Laurie/AR - There's a great button activity to use with Frog and Toad Together The Button. You have to skip around with the pages or the kids will figure out which button is the "Lost" button.
S.G. - Laurie they each have their own box and we do these activities together. I model by putting the same objects on the overhead sometimes.
Doug - Djinn- tell us more
Yonder - We had peanut allergies so M&Ms were out this year. We used Skittles instead.
Katharine - I forget how to dye macaroni -- something about food coloring & vinigar?
Jules - SG...so each kid has a box?
Kathleen - Mary, that's an interesting observation, that hands-on IS an effective way to teach so that kids can still do well on tests
Casper - use alcohol...
S.G. - Jules, Yes, I teach alot of large group activities with these.
Doug - Anyone tile with Marci Cook stuff?
Sandy/K/MO - we do both with M&M's and skittles this year *gasp* some didn't like choc.
Linda - State of CA seems to feel the same about mathland.
Peachy/K/NC - rubbing alcohol, Kat? Haven't used vinegar.
Djinn - In Kindergarten they are expected to write, sequence and recognize numbers from 0-30. In the 1st grade it is to 100
Laurie/AR - I have some Math tiles too. I didn't use them this past year though. I need to drag those out for next year.
RainyD/K/FL - macaroni--food coloring and alcohol works
Linda - Yes and in 2nd to 1000.
Mary K&1 - Kathleen, they really understand the concepts and I think that that is the most important bottom line - they aren't  just going through some motions without understanding exactly what they are doing
Djinn - I also have to add problem solving to the mix
Casper - Does anyone do "counting on"?
Katharine - alcohol, okay. no vinegar
Kathleen - Math Their Way materials and training can be found at the Center for Innovation in Education http://www.center.edu/
S.G. - I teach mykids to write to 100. We use calender math also.Great for place value and more.
chris - casper, what do you mean?
k - mathland won't meet the new CA math standards. It doesn't cover enough. We found that out when we got the nes standards in Feb and were told to start implementing them.
Peachy/K/NC - rubbing alcohol, Kat? Haven't used vinegar.
kidbiz - Yes counting on and counting back.
Linda - Pressure is really on K teachers in CA
Kathleen - alcohol and food coloring for coloring macaroni and rice, yes
angelasteachr - there are some really neet things i used last year as counters
Djinn - Our standards say that students will determine the answers to addition and subtraction problems for two numbers- each less than 10
Casper - Like you have the number 13 and the children count on adding manipulative till they count to 20.
S.G. - Does anyone use touch math?
Jules - What, in your opinion is THE MUST HAVE manipulative in your room?
Mary K&1 - The only papers that do are blank papers when they practice writing the numerals - that of course comes after a lot of chalk board writing and playing with magnetic numerals and other tactile numerals - they really get a" feel" for the shapes of the numerals <gr>
Kathleen - SG, tell us about Touch Math
Casper - Kid: What activities do you do?
Linda - Some of my students learned it in K
Katharine - I think that touch math sounds real exciting!! have you tried it?
Sandy/K/MO - Casper, we "count on" discuss place value a lot with calendar days
Laurie/AR - Yes, I've been interested in Touch Math. I owuld like to know more about it.
Peachy/K/NC - I've been hearing so much about Touch Math. Do you use it SG?
angelasteachr - we had to teach addition and subtraction last year
Kathleen - hmm, good question, jules...I'll have to think about that. I like dice, playing cards, unifix cubes..
Linda - Jules--must have clocks, money, base ten, geometric solids,
chris - casper, I use a hundreds chart and dice. They roll the dice and count to that number. For the older children I have them talley how many rolls it took to reach 100. I also write numbers on the board and they have to tell me which number comes before it and which number comes after.
Laurie/AR - I love pattern blocks.
k - Yes, Djinn. Our kids got the additions and subtraction -- even for #s up to 10 (10 9=), but it took about 4 really good weeks of concetration and review.
Katharine - Just one thing, Jules? Decks of cards.
Casper - I think milk lids, erasers (oriental)...
Sandy/K/MO - I found a recipe of cornstarch & sand... cook it till cornstarch & water disappear works great for making numbers & letters
Kathleen - jules, I know! milk in cartons! LOL, the kids love to be the milk person, reading the chart, counting out the milks
Linda - Oh, and fractions blocks.
Mary K&1 - Jules, that's too hard to answer!
Djinn - Here's another one " decide about the approach, materials and strategies to use. Use tools and strategies to model problesm, make precise calculations and check the validity of the results from the context of the problem
Linda - Djinn-do you have the standards in front of you?
Doug - Djinn- can I bring up an issue for Kindergarten? I find that the benchmark and problem of the week assessments are not authentic. Some kids who can't count to 10 do well on the counting test while others who can pattern using AAB in one context but can't use AB in another. I am slowly trying to make a point. the point being that we are not testing what we want to...the original problem of authenticity...anyone feel this way?
Katharine - Djinn, I can't even stand to real all that!!!!!!
angelasteachr - is it really developmental appropiate for subtraction in kindergarten?
S.G. - Kathleen, it really helps the children learn to recognize numbers to 9 and it's excellent for adding and subtracting. There are specific places where the number has a bot. One has one 2 has two, etc. The children touch the dots and count. After they've learned the location of the dotes they no longer neeed them. They siimply count the placces on top and count on using the dot spaces on the bottom number to add, then start with the top number and count backwards using the dot places on the number on bottom to subtract.
Djinn - Doug! I understand your pain!LOL
Laurie/AR - Touch math is just a visual way for them to count on and count back, right.
Linda - How do you teach a child to count past 29. No matter what we do she can not count past 29, and she is in 2nd grade.
Djinn - Linda- I have the standards right here
Laurie/AR - Would you use Touch Math for the entire class or just for some who have difficulty with adding and subtraction?
Casper - Is Kindergarten really entirly developmentally appropriate anymore?
Sandy/K/MO - Sub. is a little more diff. but the kids handle it well angel
Djinn - Laurie- we introduced touch math in Kinder last year - kind of an experiment - it helped
k - I guess my 1st graders will be meeting alot of the 2nd grade standards next year, since they'll be together
Kathleen - Doug, you are talking about California benchmarks and standards?
kidbiz - angelasteachr, I think if k understands the concept of taking away is less and adding is more that is sufficient.
S.G. - Anything is developmentally appropriate if the child is ready. But yes, we have to teach addition and subtraction in kinder , angelastea
chris - Are there any pre-k teachers here? What are some things you do?
Laurie/AR - Some kids transferred to our school and they were taught with touch math. It seemed to really help.
angelasteachr - last year was my first year in k and i felt that sub. was extremely hard for them to understand
Denise - For the teachers who use Touch Math in our school, the whole class uses it
kidbiz - I don't think it is necessary for k to be memorizing facts!
Jules - We teach addition, but only introduce subtraction in K
Djinn - Our State standards are being reflected in our Star test - they will go back and say well they should have learned that in K and 1
k - My kids actually really enjoyed learning additon and subtraction. We'll see how much they retain.
S.G. - I find that touch math has helped them recognize the numbers faster and help those kids who just couldn't learn them.
Marcia - s.g. I like what you said. anything is app. if the child is ready.
Mary K&1 - Linda, this may sound strange, but tell her that the people who named the numbers should have called the number after 29 - Threety and then Threety-one, Threety-two etc. she apparently isn't seeing or hearing the pattern - if you call it like it looks, she may then start to understand where the names came from
angelasteachr - addition was easy for them
Sandy/K/MO - my kids call it big kid math and love it.. we also do a lot of sub. with cereal and they eat it away
kidbiz - A fun way to practice subtraction with K is to use food. 5 skittles take away 1 have them eat the manipulatives.
Laurie/AR - I have a teacher friend who has the materials for touch math. I may use it next year for my struggling students.
Djinn - I do a great deal of sorting and tubbing to begin with.
Doug - Laurie- is that the dotted thing on the numbers?
Casper - Do ya'll do Whole group math or small group math?
Denise - Has anyone seen the Accelerated Math program? If so, what's your opinion?
Marcia - coming from a Montessori setting I like to use the kids and their bodies as much as possible for learning
Peachy/K/NC - Neat idea, MaryK&1. I'll try and remeber that!
Laurie/AR - Yes. Each number has that many dots.
Sandy/K/MO - angelasteachr.. do some adding and sub from day one if you do the calendar math.. helps later on
Djinn - Anyone using tangrams?
Marcia - Sue plus Tom equals Dan
k - I use mostly small groups for math
Yonder - I introduced subtraction with a goldfish game. Each child had a watercolored fish bowl. they rolled 2 dice -one with #s and the other with and -. was to add fish to the bowl. - they ate the fish. My kids love ediable math.
Jules - both, Casper
Sandy/K/MO - I use tangrams a lot
pez/Fl - I do both whole group and small group.
Doug - Djinn- rules for tubbing...mine are: no throwing, no putting in pocket and no eating...can I change them for better ones?
Marcia - Then give them each a number value
Linda - Djinn--i think the fractions is a bit much in 2nd. They not only have to recognize and name fractions, but they have to compare them from 1/12 to 1/2/
pez/Fl - We do a lot of tubbing also
Yonder - Other die had plus and minus.
Sandy/K/MO - start out with the story Grandfather Tang...then I have puzzles they complete
Marcia - Easy fractions can be fun. Start with a pizza
Mary K&1 - Doug, why would you want to change those rules? They sound good to me ...
Laurie/AR - How do you manage centers in your classroom?
Sandy/K/MO - pizza hut here did have a pizza fraction game for free
Peachy/K/NC - Are your puzzles teacher-made or commercial, Sandy?
Djinn - Touch math has a web page. http://www.touchmath.com/
Linda - They can name and recognize, but have trouble comparing unless they are using manipulatives.
Casper - How early into the school year do you start your small group?
Doug - Mary- they are a little negative..no?
Sandy/K/MO - I have both kinds Peachy...
angelasteachr - has anyone heard of or using Saxon math?
Marcia - I created some games on fractions for the overhead. Kids loved doing it. They learned to wait their turn, too
Djinn - Linda - they also talk about decimals but don't spell out the specifics
angelasteachr - we may be using that next year
Denise - I'm piloting Saxon Math for 2nd grade this fall.
Sandy/K/MO - I do my own math... don't have books
Mary K&1 - Doug, sometime you have to be direct!
Djinn - Sandy _ I have several books - but I'm creating my own program
Doug - Mary- ain't that the truth
Peachy/K/NC - I don't have books either.
Sandy/K/MO - Marcia... do you have the butterfly they make from cutting fractions. 2- 1/4's & 1/2 on one side and a whole on the other
Laurie/AR - We are preparing our kids for the 4th grade ACTAP test where they have to write about math.
angelasteachr - the district has saxon phonics and saxon math for k..and we may get it
Denise - Djinn, I think we all do that. I haven't found any program that really completely fits my style or the kids' needs.
S.G. - After teaching K for 19 years, I always go back to using my own methods of teaching math too. Those teachers guides just don't cut it. We're getting something new this year. I always remain hopeful for something good.
Linda - Heard of and saw samples of Saxon--staff didn't like it.
Casper - How early into the school year do you start your small group?
Katharine - They bought every classroom some $200 worth of Mathland manips, and NO BOOKS -- I'm so used to figuring out my own way, i wouldn't know what to do with a text.
Marcia - no, I haven't done that. I got transparent pastel report covers and cut circles and squares into 1/2 and 1/4
Sandy/K/MO - they stopped buying any thing for kdg. about 9 years ago but when they review new series I see how I am doing
Jules - Casper, I start mine in the first weeks of school.
Djinn - In grade 2 they must know the multiplication tables, of 2,5,10, use mental arithmetic to find sums of 2 digit numbers , add and subtract three digit numbers
Denise - Linda, why didn't the staff like Saxon. I haven't even see the program yet,
Casper - We start a text this year...seems ok a little babyfied...
k - Don't worry katharine - you're not missing much without the book
Sandy/K/MO - Marcia.. it's really cute and explains it well :-)
S.G. - Casper , if you're talking about kinder, you start just as soon as you get them to sit still, stay on task, don't interrupt. maybe after 3-4 weeks.
MT3 - we use mathland. I really like it
Casper - Jules: What grade do you teach?
Marcia - I did the 2,5,10 during line up times.
Sandy/K/MO - I think they don't have much on the pages for the kids to do IF they were going to do worksheets
cathy - I use our text as mini-homework
Jules - Casper, Kindergarten
nat/k/ma - I came to the meeting tonight because I wanted to hear teachers say that they don't use books. I firmly believe in Math manipulatives. My prinicipal is insisting that I use the workbooks so that my class will stay on line with the whole school. Where has kindergarten gone? I've been teaching for 28 years and think workbooks for k is crazy.
Marcia - I also gave then cardstock of the same shapes and they did theirs while someone did it on the overhead.
Laurie/AR - Our new book this years seems to move real slow. First four chapters are on adding and subtracting. That's just facts to 18, not regrouping.
Sandy/K/MO - nat I only use manipulatives no workbooks
Djinn - Anyone use Verstiles? I just found out about them. Really cool for 1st and 2nd as a center. Check them out at : http://www.etauniverse.com
Katharine - you are right, nat -- K shouldn't have workbooks
Yonder - I'm with you nat.
Linda - They thought Saxon was too similar to Mathland
cathy - Like I used, use them as homework...its a win-win situation-the kids like it, he likes it, the parents like it, and you don;t have to use it!!
S.G. - That's just it, workbooks and teacher's edition move too slow.
Laurie/AR - Oh, yeah, I have those too. It was confusing for some students. Most really liked it.
Marcia - After the kids could do the fractions with manip. I drew the shapes on the chaulkboard and started doing it there. They drew their shapes on paper.
Mary K&1 - nat/k, I'm with you - I tell them to just tell me what they want the kids to know and I'll teach it to them and I can do it without a book!
Casper - I don't remember the series, but our books are ok...they go right along wiith Math Their Way and are very simple...
Djinn - We do very little paper and pencil - it's all manipulatives. Yes they have to practice writing numbers, but everything else is with manip.
Denise - Is Saxon math scripted, like Saxon Phonics?
k - How do you assess where the children are at in math skills at the beginning fo the year?
nat/k/ma - she is insisting on workbooks for math and phonics. Please, this is just crazy. Kindergarten should been child-centered. watch me hide the workbooks!!!!!
cathy - Can someone explain how you manage tubbing in yourr classroom?
Marcia - I had a 1/2 at a private Montessori school. Some of the kids were doing 1/6, 1/8
Laurie/AR - One trick I have learned is to write in the plan book what they want to see and then do what you know is best for your students.
MT3 - nat have them in plain site on the shelf so the principal can think you are using them...and if push comes to shove, send some pages home for homework. The kids will probably love it.
Sandy/K/MO - k... we count things... but I test them in the spring so I pretty much already know :-)
Casper - Cathy, Everyone does it a little different to meet their own needs. I do it kinda like MTW, but with stations.
Jules - Laurie, don't give our secret away! :-)
Djinn - Cathy - I introduce and model each tub as a whole class. Then put it on a table for a small group. We go over procedures and rules. Everyone gets a turn - then I put it in the math center for free exploration until I am ready to assign a task
Eliz - Are there any 5th grade teachers here?
S.G. - K- I usually calll them one-by-one and see if they can identify numbers, count sets, one-to-one correspondence, shapes, match a set to a number. Sometimes you just stop at the beginning since they don't know anything.
Sandy/K/MO - I am up the steps so they don't generally come up to see what we are doing.
S.G. - That is how I assess what they know at the beginning of school.
Peachy/K/NC - Djinn, what kinds of procedures and rule, say for unifix cubes?
k - How about 1st or 2nd teachers? How do you assess at the beginning of the year?
Marcia - of course the most popular in my room is math baseball.
Linda - Most of my homework is math oriented, because too many of my parents do not speak English or they didn't go very far in school.
Sandy/K/MO - Peachy I have to tell them not to put in their mouths and they aren't swords
MT3 - I am 3rd but I use the inventory from the math series. Usually pretty accurate.
Linda - Yes, kids love to play math baseball. Also Quizmo.
Djinn - Peachy - first rule NO THROWING !!!!!! LOL not kidding.
DEE - I do a lot of individual testing one on one
S.G. - I would put together a test to assess in 1st and 2nd.
nat/k/ma - I have refused workbooks but they have been ordered. They are in boxes in the store room. We are going from 2 kindergartens to 1 (me). So now she has spent all that money $25 a book and wants me to use them. Watch!!!!!!!!
Linda - Another game we play is T-Races. I posted it on AtoZ teachers Stuff.
Laurie/AR - I teach 2nd. I take work from 1st grade and I see who needs help, who needs enrichment.
Marcia - Last year I had one boy who I swear was dyslexic. He could do math in his head faster (almost) than I.
Katharine - re assess -- I use the MTW one on one assessment
k - Test, assessment, yes -- one on one? in 1st or 2nd
Sandy/K/MO - Nat... put them in a box for rainy day fun at recess :-)
Jules - Sounds like most of y'all do your own entrance assessment. Is Georgia the only state with a "formal" assessment in math for kindergarten?
Gumbo/K/La - nat----out math series has nothing but big flip charts and videos (!!!) and 3-4 books of blackline masters........
DEE - We use Saxton math I really like it. Does anyone else use it. It has a lot of manupulatives
Djinn - WE talk about taking care of the things in our room. How to put them together and how to take them apart and put them away. We make a long strip and then I show them what happens if it gets too long. So they can choose to work on the floor and not the table.
Mary K&1 - nat, if you have to use them, then put them in the play center and let the kids play school with them :o)
K - Does anyone use Everyday Math? If so, how did you organize the manips?
Linda - 2nd grade made up an assessment (needs revised) to check out students at beginning, mid and end of year.
Denise - Dee, I've asked before and didn't get a response. Is Saxon Math scripted?
MT3 - We use Investigations and my school bought mathland.
DEE - Denise yes Saxton is scripted.
Laurie/AR - MT3 How do you like Investigations. We will be using it next year.
Sandy/K/MO - Dee, I don't use any math books.. I think that's the way several of us are
Linda - Does anyone know of some formal assessments for math that are not standardized tests. Would like for K-2.
Djinn - Anytime math is scrpted - very difficult for teacher to follow
Denise - Do you follow the script, or just take the basic ideas and run with it?
Katharine - Do any of you use a big "task board" type system to run kids through so many centers a day?
DEE - I find that even though you are to read it. After so long you pretty much know what to say
Laurie/AR - I don't think I could do anything that's scripted.
MT3 - I like it. It has too many "worksheets' to run off, that really shouldn't be worksheets. Like they will have a question at the top and then the rest of the page blank for the kids to answer the question. heh. big waste.
Sandy/K/MO - Linda.. I just make up my own assessments for the quarter
DEE - Does any one else use Saxton
Gumbo/K/La - we don't use math books either.....we usually cover more than Quest and the other series......
Jules - Djinn, my Anytime Math sat in the corner this year. A couple of good games and the lions are about all I use! Oh, the big books...
Denise - Yeah, that's my fear. I don't think my principal will say anything about not following the script, she's pretty cool. It's my year for evaluation though.
Linda - Sandy--that's what we did.
Laurie/AR - We have a copy limit. They will have to do away with that next year. I used the Geometry section of Investigations. I did leave out half the worksheets. I liked it though.
MT3 - Laurie, but the program is good once you make all the games and stuff. The manual is not that teacher-friendly, and there's lots of prep. But you can find ways to cut the load of teacher prep if you are clever.
Djinn - Jules - the games are great for centers- especially the 2nd grade kit
Tina - Does anyone use Everyday Math? What do you think?
cathy - What gripes me is that they order these math series that do suggest great activites to go with literature, but then they never buy the literature!!!!
Linda - The kids enjoy almost all math games.
MT3 - Laurie, our teachers last year had a special investigations limit separate from their regular copy limit. heh.
Jules - Djinn, I just have the K, but it does have great games. The kids like them.
Denise - Our first and second grade has used Saxon Phonics for a few years, but second grade is going th MCP or teacher-made materials. We found that kids who come in the middle of the year have a hard time picking up the sytem of marks.
Casper - What are some must haves for reading in the Math center?
Laurie/AR - Our school agreed to buy the literature mentioned in our new books. Thank goodness. Now I don't have to go searching. I'll just have to fight with the other teachers to get it.
Gumbo/K/La - math center books: Ten Sly Piranhas....Ten Black Dots....hmmm-ten theme going here :-)
Mary K&1 - Tina, I've been told that those who have been well inserviced for Everyday Math love it, those who haven't, hate it.
Yonder - That's why they pay you the BIG Bucks, cathy- so you can provide them! LOL
Laurie/AR - The Greedy Triangle!!!
Kathleen - Three Little Pigs, Three Bears (3 Theme, get it? ;-)
Djinn - I use Grandfather Tang to introduce tangrams. Another is 3 Pigs, One Wolf and & magic shapes - scholastic
Sandy/K/MO - what was really fun and we've talked about it before was a family math night where parents come in and try to use the manip. with their kids :-)
cathy - Six Dinner Sid, The Grouchy Ladybug, Anno's Counting Book, Bears, Goldilocks and the Three Squares
DEE - Casper I would have some activities with number words and sets. Simple story problems. Depends on grade level
k - The Doorbell Rang
Jules - Fish Eyes, Five little monkeys, ducks, etc.
S.G. - Our school uses family math.
MT3 - Gumbo how about Sea Squares and Eating Fractions. Inch by Inch and Each Orange has 8 slices...Bunches and Bunches of Bunnies
Yonder - We got Newbridge Math Big Booksthis year. Have only used a couple as they came at the end of the year.
Laurie/AR - Bunches and Bunches of Bunnies.
cathy - The 1ooth Day of School, Jim and the Beanstalk
Gumbo/K/La - love eating fractions.......so many I forgot---brain on vacation.....LOL
K - Tina, we use Everyday Math. First year was last year. There's so much - and we're a 1/2 day program.ear.
Sandy/K/MO - counting jelly beans,
Djinn - Big Fat Hen
cathy - The M & M Book
Jules - The Cheerio Counting Book
Linda - How about Math Start series?
Laurie/AR - Max's Money, Alex. who used to Be Rich. . .
Djinn - Counting Mice
cathy - The 12 Days of Christmas, The Nine Days of Camping
Tina - My K, 2,3,4,5 teachers like it my 1st grade teachers are leary.
Djinn - or is that Mouse Count? LOL
k - Does anyone have ideas to use the Millenium as a math -- 100 years -- 100 bring a math standard for 1st.
Mary K&1 - The Right Number of Elephants
DEE - 101 day use 101 dalmations
S.G. - Five little ducks, Five little monkeys
Peachy/K/NC - Five Little Monkeys,Buttons, Buttons, Each Orange Has Eight Slices
Sandy/K/MO - 5 little monkeys... can't remember them all
Djinn - 10 apples
MT3 - Greedy Triangle
cathy - We are going to try to save 2000 pennies!
Jules - Even Steven, Odd Todd
Denise - For older kids, oh, I forgot the name . . . the one about doubling one grain of rice each day.
cathy - Cookies Week, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Rooster's Off to See the World
k - good idea cathy!
K - Good concepts taught in Everyday Math, but we found our kids a bit weaker in computation by the end of the year compared to last year with Math Their Way.
MT3 - One Grain of Rice, Denise?
Djinn - A Chair for Momma - my aplogies if not correct
Jules - Denise..Anno's Magic Seed?
cathy - Picking Peas For a Penny, Monster Money(sch.)
Peachy/K/NC - Tana Hoban's books
Casper - Awsome list of books we have compliled!!!
cathy - Jack and the Beanstalk(meas.)
Djinn - One Potato, Two potato
Linda - Anno's Magic Counting Jar
Tina - Two of my teachers have taught Math Their Way and thought the Everyday Math was more organized.
nat/k/ma - Isn't the book, A Chair For Mother
cathy - Three Billy Goats, Three Bears(size seriation)
Djinn - You got it nat!
Linda - We need organized math at our school. 1/2 of the students leave.
Peachy/K/NC - Fish Eyes, Ten Black Dots
Kathleen - Tina, I think Everyday Math is more scripted or planned out. Math Their Way is more natural. Both probably good, what do you think?
DEE - Where are you from Linda that 1/2 of your students leave
Laurie/AR - Does anyone else use Scott Foresman/ Addison Wesley Math. This is our first and only year to use it.
nat/k/ma - My vote is for Math Their Way. Our school voted for Addison Wesley
cathy - Laurie-How did you adpot a book for 1 year?
Casper - Laurie: We are using that one for the first time this year too!
K - Everyday Math organizes the activities by month. It's easy to follow. The assessments are good too.
nat/k/ma - Laurie/ I just read your question. Yes, we have it.
Linda - From Central CA. Small farming community. 3rd highest poverty rate in state.
Jules - Lucky Laurie. Our adoptions are for 6 years.
Gumbo/K/La - nat-----think that's what we have, addison wesley....(dunno cuz I don't use it....)
Yonder - Childwood has a great set of 3 bears for kids to order by size.
Casper - I am very comfortable with MTW
cathy - Does anyone have childwoods web site?
Laurie/AR - Crazy district. This one is supposed to be a good lead into Investigations series. Isn't that cooky?
Tina - I would agree. They teach thinking skills which our kids lack. Our state scores for 4th grade just came back and ours were terrible so we need to make a change. We were using Heath.
Linda - SF was listed as "Commercialized"--using things like McDonald's.
nat/k/ma - Investigations is great, Laurie without the addison Wesley Math Workbooks
Laurie/AR - We get to keep all the cool stuff that comes with the series. Just won't be buying the consumbles.
Gumbo/K/La - I bought the problem of the day kit from Lakeshore.....really nice......kids loved it.....
Sandy/K/MO - scholastics have the 3 bear manip. by size too
cathy - How much time are ya'll supposed to spend on math?
Mary K&1 - The one thing that I do like about Every Day Math is that it's spiral - you keep going back to something that you strated earlier - that way it gives the child time for the concepts to really sink in and keeps refreshing their understandings
Celeste/K/NC - we have adopted Investigations, and are using SF/AW as additional material
Laurie/AR - I am excited about using Investigations.
nat/k/ma - The Manipulatives that come with Investigations are great. I use them.
Linda - How long does it take you to get used to a new math series? CA is supposed to be changing adoption cycle from 7 to 4 years.
Jules - Cathy, my county "recommends" 60-90 minutes PER DAY. We all just rolled our eyes....
DEE - the time spent is differnent some lessons in Saxton are longer than others
Laurie/AR - Celeste, that's exactly what we're doing.
Celeste/K/NC - we are going to end up with about five days of staff development for the new math series
Mya - gumbo what grade is that kit for?
Gumbo/K/La - mya, no grade on it---early childhood/lower elementary levels can easily use it.....
Linda - Actually, I teach math any way that is necessary.
Sandy/K/MO - I pretty much integrate everything... so can't really pin point how much time... more than 40 min. though
meeha/ece/tx - I think most of the math I teach (now and when I taught Kinder) is taught via the calendar -- counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, 10's -- patterning -- graphing -- more, less -- etc.
Djinn - Linda- we have used Anytime for 3 years and it still sits on the shelf - bad choice!
Laurie/AR - I believe ours is 90 minutes per week. It wasn't as much as I expected it to be. I do much more. I love math
Casper - Great coutning activity: Buy wooden spool holders and cut them in half...use small rings to cout in each spool holder.
nat/k/ma - Jules, you have got to be kidding. How do you fit everything in? Math is something that goes on all day especially at calendar time.
Linda - Started out teaching Title I pull-out math. Never used paper and pencil the whole year. Course only had 4 students at a time.
Djinn - I use math centers twice a week - math everyday in calendar - math for 15 -20 minutes everyday for station activity
Tina - WE teach approx. to 5 hrs. a week for math
Sandy/K/MO - curric. says 30 min. day do more much more
Linda - 40 minutes of math/daily. 10-15 whole group. Rest small group or individualized.
Jules - Laurie, 90 minutes is not a lot, but when they expect k to have 60 minutes of large group "isolated" instruction and 30 "integrated" instruction...
Jules - Nat, totally agree. But, our ITBS scores were "too low" so we have to make up for it!
Casper - Counting: Buy those key chain holders that you can write in the box. Write numbers and have the children add links to the metal ring to match the numbers...
Laurie/AR - I do about 30 to 45 minutes a day.
Djinn - Good Night all !!! You are wonderful!
Kathleen - Djinn, thanks for another terrific session!
