Rita - Hello all
Chris - I begin the day after Labor Day.
Rita - Is that just for teachers?
Darcy/PK - what age do you teach?
Rita - I teach K
Darcy/PK - I taught that for 2 years then had to go teach Head Start. I like K a lot better.
Rita - I have done volunteer work Pre K I like K alot better
Rita - Last year I began the year in first but I had to go back three weeks into the year
Rita - What level do you teach? Have you started yet?
Topsie - I'm teaching 1st grade. This is going on our 4th week of school.
Rita - Wow, four week and I haven't even started yet
Rita - How's it going?
Topsie - Our superintendent seems to think that starting school in Phoenix at the beginning of August is a good idea. Go figure.
Rita - We have NO air conditioning so we don't start til late and we go late
Rita - Isn't it hot?
Topsie - I would rather start after Labor Day. At least it's starting to cool down. We also have a lot of ELL students that don't come up from Mexico until after Labor Day. Yes, it is hot!!! At least it's drying out some now so the heat isn't quite so bad.
Rita - Topsie,You must be well into it by now.
Rita - Hi issfitz
missfitz - Hi everyone. I'm new!
Rita - Me too!
Topsie - Getting there. We just implemented a new math series (TERC) and we are in the process of defining our writing standards. We have had so many meetings that I'm on overload!
Topsie - This is just my third year of teaching so I'm still relatively new also.
Topsie - I can agree with the exhausted part! It is starting to get better though.
Rita - I've been teaching for 17 years
Rita - I'm new here though
Rita - It's the beginnings and the endings I find the most exhaustive and the most rewarding
missfitz - I'm teaching dual grades 1 and 2 with 15 kids. Sounds like a dream but it's more work than I bargained for!!
Topsie - Do you think students have changed much over the years. I helped out in school when my children were little moved up to a Teacher's aide, was trained as a PAL aide for Title 1. I also was an emergency sub before I went back to school to get my degree.
Cindy - I am student at Eastern Kentucky University, my assignment is to chat online with teachers and have them answer 4 questions, could someone help?
Rita - Children have changed but it's a direct result of parents and demands on them/us
Topsie - Hi, Cindy Sure, I'll try to help. I've been in that position too.
missfitz - Yes...I can say that I never would have behaved the way that my students behave! The respect just isn't there anymore.
Rita - Sure Cindy, go ahead...
missfitz - I agree Rita.
Cindy - What were your major concerns during your first year of teaching?
Topsie - Some of my students think everything should be done for them. I am trying Marvin Marshall's discipline and it's working great so far.
missfitz - Topsie, where can I get info on that?
Rita - Ha, getting started -- HOW do I really do this?? Then it changed to WHY am I doing this
Rita - What is the Marshall plan?
missfitz - Cindy...classroom management. I thought I was prepared after having 31 second graders during student teaching. It all changes when YOU are the teacher!
Cindy - Rita, next question, What type of support was helpful?
Rita - Seriously Cindy, classroom management, report cards and parents
Topsie - Some of my major concerns were: Was I teaching what I was supposed to be teaching, was I challenging my students without frustrating them, how can I get everything taught in the amount of time I have available for just a few.
Rita - I found the best support then is still the best support now- other teachers who have similar positive outlook
Cindy - Missfitz, what things become easier as you go through the beginning of the year?
Rita - Time is definitely a big issue - how and when can I get all this done
missfitz - One of my major concerns is that the school I work for is pushes phonics a lot, but I'm a whole language kind of girl. It's really difficult to make us both happy!
Topsie - The support I found most helpful was a shoulder to cry on when things built up so much that I wanted to run screaming out the door because I was wondering why I wanted to teach.
Rita - Amen!
Rita - Staff development this summer said I'll be doing alot more phonics and I'm not sure what to think of that
Topsie - Marvin Marshall has a book called Discipline without Stress, Punishments or Rewards. He feels classroom management is the teacher's job and discipline is the student's job.
Rita - How's it work?
Topsie - I also agree that the teachers with several years of experience were helpful. They were willing to listen and help me figure things out when I ran out of option of my own.
missfitz - Fitting everything in the schedule. I was having a hard time teaching every subject to both grades. Now I'm actually left with a little spare time (15 minutes) to work with students individually who may need help. Everything else is still in the works! After two weeks, though, I'd say I'm pretty comfortable in my 'teacher' shoes!
Lydia - i have just had a very stressful day
Lydia - not at school but this time the stress came from home
Cindy - Missfitz, what advise can you give me as a prospective teacher?
Darcy/PK - that's good missfitz
Lydia - i teache kindergarten and this is my fourth year
Rita - Congrats missfitz - you've got a big job I'm glad I just have one grade level
milymo - Lydia, during the school year, we have a lot more stress in our household.
missfitz - I've had some difficulty with the experienced teachers in my school. They treat me like a complete idiot. We also have some very differing ideas on how to teach.
Darcy/PK - what grade do you teach, missfitz?
missfitz - First and Second
Topsie - There are four levels of behavior. Level D is Democracy. It has three points: The student develops self-discipline, Shows kindness to other, Does good because it is the right thing to do. (The movtiation is internal) Level C Conformity The student listens, Practices, Cooperates (The motivation is external) These two levels are acceptable behavior. Level B is Bullying/Bothering The student Bosses others, Bothers others, Breaks classroom standards. Level A Anarchy The student is: Noisy, Out of control, Unsafe.
Lydia - my 7 year old son was causing the stress today
milymo - I've been very lucky. The older teachers at my school have respected my ideas and even borrowed some of them!
Darcy/PK - In which way do they treat you like an idiot?
Rita - Yeah, I am much more comfortable with likewise minds and hearts. Just 'cause you're experienced doesn't mean you've got anything to share...sadly
meeha/ece/tx - Hi, all! What are we talking about tonite?
Topsie - I'm not sure I could handle a class of two grade levels. I commend you.
missfitz - I was very naive going into this job. I was only thinking, " Wow, 15 students! No problem!" But dual grades are double the work!
Cindy - Milymo, what advise can you give me as a prospective teacher?
meeha/ece/tx - missfitz, what state are you in? do the standards for both grades pretty much line up?
Topsie - My school is pressuring the teachers to specialize in either Reading or Math and then team with another teacher. I'm not sure I like where they are going.
milymo - Hmmm... thinking Cindy....
meeha/ece/tx - Cindy -- spend time in the classroom and helping around schools to BE SURE this is what you want to do! A lot of young people spend a long time preparing to go into the classroom and find it to be totally a different experience than they expect. Many stay in the classroom less than five years.
Darcy/PK - I've been teaching for 5 years and I still get the ""I'm better then you are" look from career teachers. Don't give it a second thought.
Rita - Topsie last year all but 5 children were in the level B or level A
meeha/ece/tx - (I say that, but I believe that teaching IS the profession for me ... and I love what I do. The day it becomes more "work" than "fun" is the day I find a new profession!)
missfitz - I just get the vibe from two in particular that because I'm fresh from college, I don't have any real experience.
Rita - Why can't we just be the generalist we need to be?
Darcy/PK - Cindy, are you in teachers college?
milymo - Cindy, after getting my degree, I subbed for a year and a half. That experience really helped me when I got my classrooms.
missfitz - I'm in Florida. There are a lot of thing we do as a whole class, but a lot of reading and math instruction needs to be separate.
Darcy/PK - My first job was like that mf. I was the youngest teacher there by literally 20 years.
Lydia - anyone using tucker signing strategies for readin
Cindy - Thanks to everyone that answered, I really appreciate...
meeha/ece/tx - missfitz, listen to them, learn from them -- BUT ... take what is "best" from their practices and build from there. I used to keep a notebook of ideas I saw in different rooms so that I could pick and choose techniques -- noted botht he positives and the negatives.
Darcy/PK - no Lydia
meeha/ece/tx - Lydia -- no.
Rita - no Lydia
milymo - Good idea meeha! I've learned a lot from the teachers around me.
Topsie - I found the same thing when I looked at my classes from the last two years. This year is much better. When a student is not at an acceptable level, I ask them what level their behavior is on. We have had several duscussions and read some books to help the students understand the levels. They can tell me what they are doing and the level it is on and what level they should be on. I don't have to keep track of cards, stoplights or any of that stuff. I am very proud of my students they are beginning to self monitor. I have even had some of them walk over and turn off the lights and say "Anarcy, it's too noisy I can't hear." Not bad for the 4th week of school.
Darcy/PK - and maybe try and ingratiate yourself with one of them. Just like a clique. If one of them accepts you, the others will follow.
milymo - I'm lucky to be around teachers who love their jobs and keep updated with what is going on.
Lydia - how long has everyone been is school this year. i am starting my third week
missfitz - I have gotten some really good ideas and I'm using them. I've just had an especially frustrating day with one of them. Sometimes it's difficult to see the good when the bad is right in your face. But I know you're right!
LisaL - today was my second day
Topsie - This is the beginning of my fourth week.
meeha/ece/tx - Topsie -- that is a BIG accomplishment!
Rita - Not bad at all Topsie - I've been skeptical but with 30 kids how do you conference with them all?
Lydia - wow Topsie and i thought we started early
missfitz - Topsie, sound really interesting. I'll have to check it out. Do you think it would work in 1 and 2?
milymo - Tomorrow will be my third day of my fifth year teaching.
LisaL - Yesterday was my first day in Kindergarten after teaching first grade. After the first 10 minutes I thought that I might have made the worst mistake, but it got better.
meeha/ece/tx - missfitz, you might try a "thank you for your kind support" type card ...
Lydia - lisal i teach kindergarten and it does get better
Topsie - I was very skeptical at first not knowing how it would work, but I thought it had to be better than the alternatives I'd tried before.
milymo - 30 is so overwhelming Rita! What grade?
missfitz - This is the beginning of my third week of my first year.
LisaL - My afternoon class is totally different than the morning. It's like a whole different grade.
meeha/ece/tx - Lisa, in K you need to set the rules, the procedures, the routines ... set the habits for school... many haven't ever b een in school before! It can be trying at first.
Rita - LisaL - ease into it but then don't be afraid to take the plunge - K is great
Lydia - lisa how many in each class
meeha/ece/tx - You (Lisa) may want to consider a picture schedule for awhile.
Topsie - Mr. Marshall says it will work with any age person. I'm working on it with my 3 year-old granddaughter and even she it starting to get it.
Lydia - i have 16 in both classes
Rita - yep - in kindergarten!!!
Topsie - I have 31.
LisaL - 28 in the morning, 19 in the afternoon
milymo - I have extended day kinder the second half of the days. My little ones are so tired at the end of the day!
Rita - I used to have am pm a few years back 34 in the am and 32 in the pm
missfitz - I'm in a small school...there are only five teachers and three specialists.
Lydia - anybody using building blocks this year
meeha/ece/tx - I work with preschoolers -- with special needs -- my morning class can barely talk, the p.m. class is telling me the letters for sounds as I do the daily "write-to" ... and two of the full-day kiddos are approaching "ready-to-read"! Ability/performance levels range from 10 months to about 66 months!
Rita - WOW!
meeha/ece/tx - Rita -- that is nothing short of a crime!
milymo - I'm trying Lydia!
Topsie - Tired? Some of mine put their heads down on the table and fall asleep. I try to do more of my movement things in the afternoon and it seems to be helping.
LisaL - I will use parts of BB
Rita - Yeah
missfitz - I have 4 ADHD kids, 3 learning disabilies, and lots of talking. Any ideas on how to keep control of the chaos?! Help!
missfitz - Lydia...are you talking about Four Blocks? If so, I'm trying!
Lydia - yes building blocks is the 4 block alternative for k
Lydia - we are working on the name activites
Rita - We do early balanced literacy here it's much like bb with a few additions
Topsie - Check out Marvin Marshall's book Discipline without Stress Punishments or Rewards. I have some very active students and they are responding well to his approach to discipline.
Rita - I'll try anything
Paulie - Topsie how do you explain his 4 groups to K kids?
meeha/ece/tx - missfitz -- look into some information about "sensory integration activities" and employ them with your kiddos -- if you can keep them moving and working toward mastery of skills.
Lydia - i am a big fan of bb
Rita - seriously, I'll try to read it before I start school
milymo - I think Four Blocks is great to use with a multi-age class. My LD kiddos really fit into the Four Blocks routine as well!
Topsie - I'm doing the Working with Words, the writing block and the guided reading with my 1st graders. I'm still trying to get everything implemented.
Lydia - i no longer do letter of the week
missfitz - It's hard with with two grades. I don't quite have enough time to do what I want to do. Plus my school just bought a new reading series that we are required to use, so I'm trying to adapt that.
Lydia - i am able to use my reading series as a guide
Lydia - don't do everything in the series i just pick and choose
Rita - what are you using
missfitz - Me, too. There are a lot of good skills to cover, I'm just not thrilled with the stories.
milymo - What grades do you have missfitz?
Lydia - Rita Harcourt
missfitz - me, too
Topsie - We did a lot of class discussion about what would fit in each level. My students were very creative. I also have read them several books. Miss Nelson is Missing for Level A, Disappearing Ducks for Level D, Snow White and the Seven Dwarft for Level A, B and C. We also did the Three Little Pigs for Level B.
missfitz - I have 1 and 2
missfitz - six in first, 9 in second
Rita - I think our new one (we get a new one every 2 years) is Harcourt - Trophies but my school is using Signatures
Paulie - thanks Topsie I will write that down BUT
Topsie - My students are starting to tell me Mrs. Hullihen that student is on Level A. It's amazing!
milymo - That would be so difficult missfitz!
Paulie - When they misbehave how do you use the chart to point out which of the 4 if they don't read yet?
missfitz - It's definitely a challenge I wouldn't recommend to other first year teachers!
Topsie - I would put pictures by the options under the Levels. You might ask the students to tell you what would help them remember mine sure do surprise me sometimes with the ideas they have.
Paulie - so what kind of ideas for pictures did your kids come up with?
missfitz - I've rearranged desks three times in two weeks. No one can get along. Chaos!
Paulie - can u put a picture of the story u used? will they remember?
Topsie - We are still doing a lot of discussion about what each level would look like. Mine love to show me Level A behavior (especially noisy) they have that one down pat.
missfitz - What are your biggest challenges?
Rita - I have to go I hope to chat with everyone next week. Bye Have a great week!
Topsie - Bye, Rita
missfitz - milymo, what grade do you teach?
milymo - I am teaching kinder this year, after 3 years in 2nd and my very first year in kinder.
Topsie - Paulie, Mr. Marshall also recommends having students create examples of situations that exemplify each of the four levels. Each student could then create a picture that shows what the level means.
Topsie - I don't see why you couldn't put a picture by the levels. Anything to help the students internalize the levels.
milymo - My biggest challenge so far this year has been motivation. I was upset (disappointed) that I could not teach 2nd again.
missfitz - I don't think I could ever teach kinder. I commend anyone who can handle them!
missfitz - What happened that you couldn't teach 2nd?
Topsie - It sure is a big change. The students are more independent at second grade.
milymo - Now that I have met my kiddos, I have started to enjoy it.
missfitz - My first graders are actually more independent and better behaved than my second graders!
milymo - I knew it would be okay, I just had to get my room arranged and ideas to get started.
Topsie - Well, got to run. My grandson is hungry and I need to get him fed.
missfitz - Time to get some housework done. Bye!
Just PS - Thanks Topsie I see your rremark is still here for me
milymo - Bye missiftz!
milymo - Good luck! Hope to see you here again.
milymo - Did you get the kindergarten class then?
Topsie - Your welcome. E-mail me if you want more information or check out Marvin Marshall's website. http://www.marvinmarshall.com : )
Just PS - I am coming to that chat with Dr Marshall tomorrow night
missfitz - Sorry, no rest for the weary!
Just PS - I read his site already
Just PS - what is your email?
Topsie - Sorry, carla_hullihen@qwest.net
Just PS - thanks
Topsie - Bye and thanks for the opportunity to chat with such nice people.
Just PS - I wrote it down thanks
Just PS - so . . . milymo have u started school yet?
milymo - Yes, today was my second day.
Just PS - How did it go? what grade?
milymo - Did you get the kindergarten class you were waiting for?
Just PS - I am waiting til tomorrow to find out if I got a job
Just PS - won't know til wed
Just PS - I have been so busy I keep forgeting what grades people are in
Paulie - why did u leave?
milymo - Sorry! I hit loggoff instead of update on my last post!!!
milymo - I guess it's a sign of a long day! LOL!
Paulie - o I thought maybe my chat breath was bad or soemthing
Paulie - oic what gr?
milymo - I am teaching kinder.
Paulie - ok I thought so
milymo - I am enjoying it, but it is an adjustment from second.
Paulie - so are you using marshall's plan for discipline?
Paulie - understand I also taught 2nd one yr
milymo - No, I do the 3 strikes and you get a phone call home.
milymo - No rewards though.
Paulie - oic I like the stoplight one actually
milymo - I've used the same 3 rules for 5 years now and they fit most situations.
milymo - You mean the card pulling one?
Paulie - I liekd in 4th gr when they got play mpney for things (rewards) and three tiems that yr I had an auction but I guess that is not acceptable anymore either
Paulie - well I do it with a colored yardstick and clothespins
Paulie - what three rules?
milymo - Basically it's like that, but I keep the "strikes" in my head instead of on the board.
Paulie - be kind, be safe, and do my part were mine
Paulie - actually I said "I will shwo respect by being kind, being safe and doing my part"
Paulie - oic then how did you document?
milymo - Listen to the teacher and raise hand to talk. Keep hands and feet to self. Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Paulie - sounds liek mine in just different words
Paulie - when I type fast I spell badly
milymo - If I had problems day after day, I would write notes home or call. After a couple months, I don't have to do much more than warn them when they are breaking a rule.
Paulie - great
milymo - I need to pack hubby's lunch. be back in 5 min, if you'll still be here!
Paulie - ok I will I stay for the late chat
Paulie - Barbie came but I ahd run for potty break lol so she left
milymo - He was running late (again).
milymo - Hopefully she'll be back.
Paulie - he work nights?
milymo - Yes. It kind of stinks, but he watches our 2 year old in the mornings, so I know she's in good hands.
Paulie - after he comes hoem from work he stays up to watch two yr old?
Paulie - do u work just half a day then?
Paulie - what gr level do you teach teri?
milymo - Yes. He watches her until about 1:00 and then takes her to my mom's house until I get home around 5:00
Paulie - nice
Paulie - waiting to see if I got a job tomorrow
milymo - I tried a reward system my first year, and it was difficult to keep up with. I noticed that they were behaving, even when I didn't keep up with my system.
Paulie - I never had a reward for behavior in K
milymo - I forgot how wiggley kinders could be!
Paulie - but in first and second grades I did have group rewards kids had to fill the can with jellybeans by me catching someone doing the right thing
milymo - I did that my first year of second grade.
Paulie - but u get the wiggles out by doing different ssongs and things
milymo - Yes, I've given them more free play here in the beginning. We have a rest time in the p.m. as well.
Paulie - and the group that filled their can first got a prize and everyone got to divide up the jelly beans and eat them after they graphed the colors
Paulie - another tiem I gave them each a real dollar bill
milymo - You always have such good ideas Paulie!
Paulie - and then they gave it back to my aide who was the banker
Paulie - thanks
Paulie - and in return they got a deposit slip
milymo - I enjoy your posts on the kinder mailring... I post under Michelle/OH.
Paulie - and it was ten dimes stamped on a paper that they kept on their desk
Paulie - and this time i took away when i saw "bad" behavior
Paulie - and if they ahd any left the end of the mo I had a store for them to buy really nice things I had shopped for
Paulie - oic well I try thank u
milymo - My seventh grade science teacher would save crazy things and we could earn them somehow... I forget how though. My fifth grade teacher did something similiar as well.
Paulie - Of course they were marked ridiculous prices because they cost more than the dollar they ahd to spend Each week I would show them a couple more things I bought for them to buy if they ahd money
milymo - Did you use your own money or class money?
Paulie - my money
milymo - How expensive!
Paulie - but they learned about math subtraction and value of a dollar
Paulie - kinda
Paulie - with my 4th gr auction I had many thigns donated
Paulie - travel agencies and places where people worked
Paulie - I guess the other aldy left
milymo - That's good.
milymo - I don't think she logged out though.
Paulie - o well I did not mean to hog the conversation
milymo - No problem, just learning what I can!
Paulie - How many K do you ahve?
milymo - I have 15 in my a.m. class and 9 in my p.m. class.
Paulie - wow why so few?
Paulie - that would be heaven
milymo - The 9 are extended day... they tested low in screening so they come an extra half day.
Paulie - oic so u have half days
milymo - Several of the p.m. kiddos will probably end up tested by the second grade.
Paulie - the job I wanted had full days and a brand new school and they all used BB for K and 4 blocks for upper
milymo - Yes - we have made the switch to full days yet.
Paulie - by second gr? huh?
milymo - What a dream!!!
milymo - I mean tested for disabilites... they don't always like to test when the kids are in kinder.
Paulie - nono this is the job I interviewed for It was not a dream
Paulie - oic further testing I thought u meant they were gifted
milymo - Some years it can be a slow process to get an evaluation.
milymo - Is that they job you are waiting to hear about?
Paulie - yes
milymo - Good luck! I really hope you get it!
milymo - What state are you in?
Paulie - sorry
Paulie - thanks WA now
Paulie - the job is in AZ
milymo - Wow! That would be a move. Where were you born?
Paulie - Idaho
Paulie - lived in Hawaii, CT, Mass, S Carolina
Paulie - northern and souther n CA
milymo - I've been in Ohio all my life except when I went to college in Indiana.
Paulie - My three kids were born in Mass, hawaii and northern CA
Paulie - have also visited most of the states except not the southeastern ones except I did go to Arkansas
milymo - Can I ask how you've been able to live so many places?
Paulie - military
milymo - That would have been my guessAre you/ were you in the military, or your husband?
Paulie - ex was
Paulie - 13 moves in 10 years
milymo - Where do your parents and kids live?
Paulie - parents are dead
Paulie - heaven
milymo - Even though you got to see many places, that would have been very stressful for me.
Paulie - two sons in WA daughter in Idaho
milymo - I live 2 miles from my parents and my brother and sister both live within 25 minutes of me. Can't imagine being too far from them.
Paulie - Dad died at 69 when I was in Hawaii Mom died at 80 when I moved to WA
Paulie - my twin sister and an older brother died also
Paulie - so lets talk about school again
milymo - Okay.
Paulie - so why is your class so small?
Paulie - country school?
milymo - I'll bet you have so many ideas bursting in you head to use WHEN you find out that you get that job tomorrow
milymo - Well, they added another section of kinder because the class sizes have been so big.
milymo - The first grades both have around 28!!! Second grade is at 22.
Paulie - oic well that is why they need another teacher
Paulie - they had 35,34 and 36 kids in three classes
Paulie - so they would still ahve big classes if divided by 4
Paulie - but they have a fulld ay aide all of them
milymo - So you will be the fourth teacher, if all goes well, right?
Paulie - yes if I were to get it but maybe they will get someone closer
milymo - Did you have to go to AZ for the interview? Any prospects in WA?
Paulie - no phone
Jennifer N. - hello this is the chat for discipline correct?
