meeha/ece/tx - Hello!
Melissa - I have a question. Do any of you have enrichment teachers in your school
Paulie - You the teacher that posted that question to several boards?
meeha/ece/tx - Mel -- almost all teachers on our campus are "Gifted and Talanted" trained ... every teacher is pretty much responsible for "enriching" for "gifted" population
meeha/ece/tx - Hi Dee!
Paulie - Is this a job where student coem to you or where u help teachers with enrichment?
meeha/ece/tx - 'evening, Carol -- how are you doing this evening?
Carol - Hi to everyone its been a busy day
Melissa - there was an advertisement for an enrichment teacher which I think is different then gifted and talented
meeha/ece/tx - What group of children does everyone here work with? I work with a special needs preschool population near Dallas, TX.
Paulie - I think enrichment teacher helps all teachers
Melissa - yep, just curious if anyone knew
Carol - Do any of you have escapers in your classrooms. You know the children who just want to walk home when they want to
Paulie - sometiems they just get materials for a teacher, sometimes they teach soemthign they are good with
Melissa - I think so to, I know at this particular school the gifted and talented teacher is seperate from the enrichment teacher
meeha/ece/tx - Hi, bklynteech -- welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
bklynteech - Thanks Meeha. This is my first year in first.
bklynteech - So far I love it.
Dee - I teach K and I have 2 special needs kids in my classroom all day long One of them is still in Pull-ups and he is 5
Paulie - Carol that must be a real problem
Melissa - thanks for the info
Paulie - Dee does he ahve an aide?
meeha/ece/tx - Dee -- I just sent a 5-year old to K ... he still wears pull-ups, but is about 85% trained.
meeha/ece/tx - Carol -- what age group do you work with?
Dee - I have an aide for the two the other one was problems walking so she needs a lot of help
meeha/ece/tx - bklyn -- how is is going in your first year? Did you take advantage of the mentors who were online every evening last week?
meeha/ece/tx - hi Amy! welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
Carol - Our Mental Health Consultant was observing today Her thought was we could shock him every time he left the room or playground
Paulie - shock?????good grief
Amy - Hi thank you. I just started teaching Nursery School in New York City.
Carol - I teach 3 - 5 year olds this year I have 10 threes
Paulie - hi juli
bklynteech - Nope, I was so tired by the time I got home I never logged on LOL Things are going well. I have a full time para for a mandated student, which is a tremendous help
Amy - Before that I assistant taught Kindergarten and then First Grade
juli - bk - I LOVED teaching first!
Paulie - He is not an animal to be trained with shock sensors good grief
meeha/ece/tx - Carol, your "job" on the playground will be to make the playground more enticing than the surrounding area ... a tough job!
juli - Hi Paulie, and everyone else!
meeha/ece/tx - Hi juli! welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
bklynteech - I had been looking forward to teaching third, but now I find that I just love first.
juli - I;m a former k-2 teacher now SAHM sort of homeschooling my dd
bklynteech - I've been fortunate in that my register is very low for a NYC school --- so far. The other shoe hasn't dropped yet. I only have 17 so far.
Carol - But we know licensing would have I absolute fit so that's not a real option. But it does realize some stress
RO - I need some help
Amy - We have three teachers and thirteen three year olds...a pretty good ratio, huh? It's a private school
juli - what do you need help with RO
Amy - Bklynteech what grade do you teach?
Paulie - RO if you are a teacher we will try to help
meeha/ece/tx - You set the guidelines for the playground area ... stated positively ... (Stay here ... NOT "don't go _____) licensing would have a fit? it would be downright ILLEGAL here! (we can't even hold a child's hand to walk them to time-out in TX!!!!!
bklynteech - Amy, first grade
meeha/ece/tx - Hi RO and jj -- welcome to tonight's early childhood chat! How can we help, RO?
Amy - Oh wow. Can I ask what school? Where in Bklyn?
bklynteech - I'm in East Flatbush, do you know Brooklyn? I'm teaching at the school I grew up in many, many years ago.
Carol - meeha that's the direction we are headed to also
Paulie - hi Amy missed your entrance
RO - I am interviewing for a 1st grade position tomorrow and I know the School district here is using Four block
Amy - Hi Paulie
meeha/ece/tx - So, Carol, this is a 3-year old who won't stay on the playground? What have you tried?
juli - Bk -When I taught first I had 12! What an awesome year!
bklynteech - There is much to be said for a small class, especially with the littles.
Amy - Oh that's nice to teach in the school you grew up in. I went to schol in Brooklyn a while back...I went to St. Ann's in Brooklyn Heights for late elementary/junior high.
juli - Four block is very interesting Ro.
Amy - Small classes are great
Paulie - Four Blocks is great
RO - I need to know the basis of 4 Block
Paulie - basis? you mean each of the blocks?
Amy - I was looking into teaching in the NYC public school system but this other job came up. I do think I might like to teach in public school, though. I just recently qualified for state certification. With the budget cuts and everything, it's a tough scene. But there are some great city schools and there sure is a need for good teachers
RO - Yes and I would incorp. into a 1st environment
Paulie - hi sky hi lol that soudns funny
meeha/ece/tx - Hi Claire and sky hi!
meeha/ece/tx - welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
Paulie - hi Claire
Carol - Currently, an adult is with him or in sight of him and we know have the parent more involved. The true problem is our building is in the community center in the complex where he lives and when he's not in school he is allowed to have free roaming
Claire - Hi everyone
Paulie - You know teachers net has wonderful info on 4 Blocks
Claire - I agree Paulie - its' the best four block info I hyave found on the net
bklynteech - Amy, this is my second year at this school. Last year was not a pleasant one for a long time. My original class was collapsed because of low enrollment and I became a "floating" writing teacher for all the grades. 500 students a week. It was very strange. I think I wasn't comfortable with it until around January.
Paulie - they even have some printouts for 4 blocks (and BB too) on their site under resources on the side
Amy - That sounds rought, bklynteech
meeha/ece/tx - R0 -- have you checked out the Gazette here for 4-block info ... and the archive here at http://www.teachers.net/archive
Amy - It must be nice to have your own class now
bklynteech - WE did not have a supportive administration last year, but this year we have a new principal and things are looking up.
Amy - I like the Bd of Ed. raises I should get in the system soon
bklynteech - Yes, I love having my own class. I love the children in my room. They are so sweet. Talky, but not a mean bone in their bodies.
Amy - It's good to have a supportive administration, that's for sure
meeha/ece/tx - Carol, when your children go out to the playground do you sit them all down and very clearly state expectations, limits, etc? Have you considered posting "red ribbons" at the end of play areas (kind of reminders to "STOP") while you're out?
RO - thank you for pointing me in the right direction
bklynteech - Amy, if you are interested in a NYC public school, please do yourself a favor and research the districts. Go to specific schools and try to meet the principals.
bklynteech - Don't rely on job fairs.
Amy - First grade is great. I assistant taught first grade last year at a private school in Manhattan.
meeha/ece/tx - Good luck with the interview, RO!
meeha/ece/tx - You may also want to check out the 4-blocks chatboard here.
Amy - Yeah, I was going to go to the job fair at the Brooklyn marriot hotel last month but I didn't b/c I had already committed to this other position. What is your district?
juli - I'm wondering if you guys can help me with my reintroduction to teaching.
meeha/ece/tx - how, juli?
juli - As I mentioned, I taught K-2 over the course of 10 years but I left 3 years ago when dd was born.
juli - Now I'm beginning to feel the itch to go back and want to be prepared this spring when resumes are needed.
meeha/ece/tx - Hi sunshine! welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
juli - I haven't written a resume in a loooong time.
meeha/ece/tx - Hi, jen! welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
juli - I'm not sure where to begin. THings have changed some. What are today's standards?
bklynteech - Amy, I'm in District 18.
Amy - I thought I wanted only Districts 1, 2 or 3 but in the future i might look into others. Like in Brooklyn or the Bronx.
meeha/ece/tx - juli, make it a point to get out and visit some principals this year ... visit with teachers on campuses where you think you might enjoy working next year ... and make your name known! (volunteer! sub! bring the team lunch!) Make yourself "unforgettable!"
bklynteech - District 22 in Brooklyn is a good district if you can get in. The plum districts in Queens are 24,25, 26 and parts of 27
meeha/ece/tx - juli, you've only been out three years, right?
meeha/ece/tx - what state are you in?
bklynteech - You should read the state report cards on all the districts and schools. It will give you an idea of what is happening around the city'
bklynteech - anyway, getting near to bedtime for me. 5 a.m. comes pretty quick. Have a good night all.
Amy - good advice where do I get that info? at the nycenet.edu site?
juli - Meeha, I've only been out three years, but my resume is a lot older than that. I've also moved to ME since then.
juli - I also moved to a town with an award winning elem school that I would love to teach in someday.
meeha/ece/tx - juli, microsoft office has good resume formats in the templates ... that should be no prob. for you! Resume needs to be ONE page ... ideally no more!
Amy - good night, bklyn teech Enjoy your first grade class
Amy - good night everyone
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, Amy -- you're leaving?
juli - How many of you brought portfolios with you to interviews? Never did this when I was job hunting. How critical is it?
Native Girl - I just joined. It is only 5:25pm here in Alaska
juli - Meeha, I know the format, but was really wondering what info seems to be standard these days.
meeha/ece/tx - juli, portfolios are kind of new ... student teachers now create portfolios to present themselves to interviewers.
meeha/ece/tx - Hi Native Girl! welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
Paulie too - had to restart my cursor would not move
meeha/ece/tx - w/b Paulie!
meeha/ece/tx - Hi sdsue! welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
Native Girl - This is my second time on a chat line. I am taking an on-line class on how to integrate technology in the classroom. I don't teach yet but hope to be teaching K in a year or so.
Paulie too - thanks
sdsue - my first time, just updating what has been going on so fr
meeha/ece/tx - Native Girl -- welcome to Teachers.net ... one of the friendliest sites on the web! You'll find a lot of support and help here! Welcome to you, too, sdsue!
Paulie too - native girl there is a wonderful interactive math site called http:www/mathcats.com
Paulie too - oops
meeha/ece/tx - Native Girl -- are you having to create a portfolio as a part of your teacher preparation coursework?
Paulie too - ttp://www.mathcats.com I think
sdsue - I have to.
Paulie too - http://www.mathcats.com
Native Girl - I will check that site out. I had to do that for my preliminary credential. I am not getting my Professional Clear
meeha/ece/tx - http://www.mathcats.com ?
Paulie too - yes
juli - Even though I'm not a paid teacher, I'm happily using what I know to homeschool my 3.5 year old this year.
Paulie too - I was typing too carelessly
meeha/ece/tx - thanks, Paulie!
Paulie too - Native Girl wendy updates the program often she wriote the logo for it (comp lang)
meeha/ece/tx - juli -- that is great! I'm sure your little one loves learning! They are SO excited to get to learn w hen they're little!
Paulie too - I love the tesselations part myself
Native Girl - How long do we stay on line
juli - sdsue, what is to be included in your portfolio?
juli - Thanks, Meeha.
meeha/ece/tx - Paulie -- have you checked out http://www.coolmath4kids.com ? as well?
juli - Well, it would be easier if I didn't also have 1 year old twin boys!
Paulie too - pe but I will meeha thanks
Addie/mo - it has been a long time
meeha/ece/tx - jul you're a braver woman than I! You want to go back to school with three under the age of 5? ((((( )))))
sdsue - so far, it is still in progress. They talked about putting in pictures as well as resume and teaching goals and expectations
meeha/ece/tx - Hi Ann! welcome to tonight's early childhood chat!
Addie/mo - juli, i have been reading for a while and i will offer you my perspective, both as an admin and as a "job seeker" which i was last spring
juli - Ha-ha, Meeha, perhaps that's the reason! Just kidding...
juli - Thanks Addie, fire away!
meeha/ece/tx - Addie -- you were a job-seeker last spring? did you get a principal position?
Paulie too - I made an online portfolio
Ann - anyone teaching K?
Paulie too - (I wish)
juli - Will you share the link, Paulie?
Addie/mo - yes, i would put together a portfolio. i had one that i used in my admin interviews that included my transcripts, resume, letters of recommendation, awards and newspaper articles and a couple of thematic units that i had written. the portfolio impressed the interview committee
meeha/ece/tx - Ann -- I work with special needs preschoolers ... have 5 who are approaching K level
Addie/mo - yes, i got a principal's position in a new school district. i am at kirbyville, mo, which is by branson
Ann - sorry, trying to figure which screen I'm working on...two keep coming up!
Paulie too - only if you writer to me personally because this is archived and I ahve personal info on it that I don't hoep to share with the whole www
juli - Okay, Addie... but since i've been out of the classroom for over 3 years, how do I put one together now?
meeha/ece/tx - Congrats! (I've been SOOO absent from t.net of late -- hadn't even heard! I'm happy for you!
Native Girl - I will have to be leaving now to pick up my 3 and 1 year olds. There is a time difference so the chat room may not be open when I have a chance to get back on later. Pauliee too.... I would like to see your on line portfolio. I will be doing one next week.
juli - Understood, Paulie.
sdsue - paulie too, can I get the website as well, what is your email address?
Paulie too - DearMrsS2@aol.com
meeha/ece/tx - Native Girl -- there will be another meeting at 11 pm Eastern time ... about 1.5 hours from now ... you can try back then! nice to meet you!
Addie/mo - as an admin that interviews teachers, i like to see portfolios and i like to see photos of the classroom how it is set up, etc. i also like to see units that people have written. i want to see if it is organized and neat. it can make a candidate stand out above the crowd
Addie/mo - juli, that will be a challenge....do you have any units or any photos from when you were teaching before? then you will need to include your resume, transcripts and letters of recommendation. oh, and your certification
Paulie too - we don't leave we are here through that time
Addie/mo - an online portfolio would be even better because the person could go back and view it at his/her leisure. also it shows that you are tech savvy
Paulie too - You just need to send me email privately I don't say the url here because this is archived
Ann - I like the idea of online portfolios!
Addie/mo - oh, and i had samples of the classroom newsletter that i did in it
Paulie too - that is what I thought Addie
juli - Most of those things shouldn't be a problem. Mostly, I was wanting to know that it wasn't just a fad and that it is really worth my time and effort to go rummaging through what has been in storage for a long time.
meeha/ece/tx - It would speak "volumes" ... could be included on your resume, which would allow interviewer to "preview" you ... and look back again!
Carol - juli, you could also include ways you have remained current professional organizations ect..
Paulie too - I forgot to show my newsletters gee will ahve to add another page
meeha/ece/tx - (just be careful about posting pics of kiddos)
juli - Baaahhaaaa, Carol! I've had three children in these three years out of the classroom!
Addie/mo - on resumes, what i have read is that if your experience warrants it, it is okay to have a second page in your resume. i did and i dont think it hurt anything, but i had two pages worth of relevant stuff. i also included a picture on it that i scanned onto the resume, which some people say is a "no-no" but again, it didnt hurt me any
Paulie too - I have photos of kids It does not have their names and years ago I ahd permission so I use them
Paulie too - picture of you?
juli - So Addie, what do you recommend my adding about my hiatus?
juli - Addie, did you used to teach first grade?
Addie/mo - you will just have to explain what you have been doing during that time. i dont think i would list it on your resume unless it is related to teaching, but be prepared to answer that question in an interview setting
Addie/mo - i used to teach kindergarten
Paulie too - so what do principals think about ta teacher who just moved and could not find a job so they didn't teach for awhile?
juli - I really like the idea of an online portfolio. Thanks!
Addie/mo - i guess it would depend on the job market in the area. if i knew there was a tight job market, i proably wouldnt think too much about it, but if there were lots of jobs available, i might wonder why the person had not found a job. i would ask some questions about it probably like exactly what positions the person was interested and so forth. that would help me to understand why the job search had been difficult. it would just be one piece of info to figure in to the experience, references and interview
meeha/ece/tx - juli -- good luck in your job-search! good night, all ..... take care and God Bless!
juli - Before i can even apply to teach next year I need to get recert in my old state and cert in my new state. That means 75 hours of prof dev.
Addie/mo - night meeha
Addie/mo - be sure and document all that prof dev for your portfolio. also, find out what is "hot" in the districts that you wish to apply in and focus your prof dev in that area, so you will be knowledgeable about what is important to them
juli - That's a really good point, Addie. I know that the district I moved to will be going to full day K in a few years, so I thought I'd focus on ECE.
Paulie too - thanks Addie
juli - But fine tuning even further may be good.
Addie/mo - for instance in my district we have an emphasis on balanced literacy and integrating technology. next year we will be looking at reform-based math curricula...someone strong in one or more of these areas would interview better in my district than someone who did not know about this.
Carol - nite all, enjoy what your children have to offer
Addie/mo - nite, carol
Paulie too - what is reform based math?
Paulie too - bye carol
Addie/mo - standards based math...follows the state and national standards..programs like everyday math and bridges....students are learning both process and content and they have to write about what they are learning and explain it....
Paulie too - oic like marilyn Burns
juli - This was a focus where I used to teach. In fact, I was on both the lang arts and math curriculum standars committees.
Addie/mo - most of the programs spiral, so that the students are exposed to the content multiple times in different contexts to build understanding. it is not like traditional math where you have the addition chapter and then the subtraction chapter, etc and the two never interact
Paulie too - o so it is like some math let's see saxon math?
Addie/mo - juli, you probably gained some valuable insight from those committees. highlighting your leadership abilities is a good practice too on your resume and interviewing. it shows that you are working to better the school and profession as a whole rather than simply staying in your own little world of the individual classroom
Addie/mo - no, saxon math is very skills driven, but it does have the spiraling concept
juli - Yes, Addie, but that's the problem. I don't know where or how to include that type of info since when last I wrote my resume I didn't have those experiences.
Addie/mo - the standards based programs also include a lot of manipulatives and "games" where the kids practice logical skills. saxon, at least how i have seen it implemented doesnt do much in these areas
Paulie too - o good I ahte saxon
juli - Addie, what about letters of recommendation? How old is too old?
Addie/mo - most of my leadership experiences were related to professional organizations so i listed them under professional memberships (i think). you might create a category called "professional responsibilities" and list them under that heading.
Paulie too - but addie u have to be on committees at school there is NO choice really u might get to suggest which ones but u have to do several usually
juli - I like that catagory.
Paulie too - why should any be too old?
Paulie too - It shows continuity
juli - Not true, Paulie, where I used to teach. We were always invited to be on committees.
Paulie too - were wre never invited we had to select three
Addie/mo - i had several in my portfolio from 1996. they were really nicely written and i will probably keep them in it forever, but i will add new ones as i get them. i had several in my "leadership packet" from the university that are not in my portfolio that are more recent. should the current supt. or other principal in my district decide to leave for any reason, i will ask them for a letter of rec before they go
juli - I'm just wondering whether the letter I have from a principal where I student taught would have relevance 12 years later.
Addie/mo - paulie, i would just put a positive spin on the committee work and use it to your advantage. what did the committee accomplish and how did you contribute?
Paulie too - I use my one still from the teacher I taught for
juli - I guess the attitude here was that if you wanted to be included you'd have better input. But, I suppose, if no one volunteered things would be different.
Paulie too - o right I udnerstand addie but I never thought that would make a huge difference in my participating on portfolio/resume I just thought it showed cooperation
Addie/mo - if you have several other letters, i dont know if i would include it or not. i am sure that you have grown alot as a teacher since then and i dont know how relevant it is. however if it is particularly complimentary or well written, you might want to include it
juli - Good advice, Addie.
juli - I do not have any new ones since 1995.
Addie/mo - paulie, i think it probably depends on how much you have to list. i didnt list every committee i have been on or even chaired becuase i had other stuff to list. i think that in the absence of other things, i would definitely list it, especially if it provides the opportunity for you to showcase talents that are not listed elsewhere
Addie/mo - is that when your hiatus began?
Paulie too - ok
juli - No, I left in Jan '99. I actually thought I'd return that year but after having my dd, well, I just didn't want to. I didn't think to get letters at the time.
juli - How appropriate would it be for me to contact my former principal now to ask for a letter? We;ve both since moved, but I know hwere she is principal.
Addie/mo - do you not know where anyone that you worked with at your previous job is? i would try to get something positive from that last position, because if you leave it blank, it could raise questions about how things went there
Addie/mo - i think it would be very appropriate to contact your former principal.
juli - Ohhh thank you! I've been wrestling with this for days!
juli - I feel so out of touch. This mothering has made my brain mush!
Addie/mo - all that prof dev will get your brain back in shape!
Paulie too - does it have to eb the principal or can it be a team teacher u worked with or a mentor?
juli - Oh, one more thing. I have a video that my principal took during a formal observation. Include that?
Paulie too - It might be too old depends on what you were teaching I would think
juli - There are several colleagues that I can ask, as well as board members.
juli - What value would a letter from a parent of a student I had hold.
Addie/mo - paulie, i think any of those people would be fine. after my initial interview for principal, they called me and wanted a list of references. they didnt say how many, so i gave them seven. i was assist. principal and i listed my supt, principal, spec. ed director, assist. supt. and two teachers that i had taught with and also supervised. i thought that the more variety the better.
Addie/mo - i would take the video, but i am not sure that the interviewer would have time to watch it. i would offer it, though
Paulie too - I ahve some nivce references also from parents one was a teacher in the same district i was in but not same school
Addie/mo - oh and the spec. ed process coordinator
Addie/mo - some of my portfolio references are from parents
Paulie too - I can't type
juli - Funny, about the video, how things change. Wasn't that a big thing awhile back?
juli - Now it's online portfolios! LOL
Paulie too - u still have to make a video for the national board certification
Addie/mo - board members are a good idea too, but i didnt exercise that resource because it would have been a poor move politically if i had not gotten the new position
Paulie too - is your portfolio online addie?
Addie/mo - no, it is not online. i have a resume online if you want to see it... http://www.geocities.com/athens/aegean/2221/resume.html
Paulie too - I think I saw your resume before thanks it is impressive
Paulie too - we miss u in K tho
juli - Addie, I wrote an essay when I taught first grade on why I thought there should be a computer in my classroom. I entitled it The training Wheels Are Off and We're Headed For the Superhighway. I wrote it and received a computer in about a week.
juli - Thank you for the offer to view your resume.
Addie/mo - juli, i am just speaking for myself. i know that when we interview we have several people back to back for one thing. also, i dont happen to have a tv/vcr in my office. i could go get one from the library. if i was really trying to make a final choice and i had videos from each of them i would probably watch them.
Paulie too - nice juli
Addie/mo - that might be good in your portfolio to illustrate your written communication skills
juli - The essay was written for a man in our community who said he would buy the computer if I could convince him first graders needed one. he is now on the school board there.
Paulie too - god community involvement Juli
Addie/mo - that would impress me, because i am a "techie" also it shows initiative and resourcefulness
Paulie too - I meant good
Addie/mo - gotta go
juli - Okay, enough about me. What do you teach Paulie?
juli - See ya, Addie. Thanks so much!
Paulie too - I think I said I moved and don't have a job yet
Paulie too - I stopped applying when I thought I was gonna get this one with BB and developmental K that I really wanted
juli - I only caught part of that. I wasn't sure if that was hypothetical.
Paulie too - but I didn't get it so now am without a job still
juli - Sorry, what is BB?
Paulie too -
Paulie too - Building Blocks
juli - Oh, that would be a really cool position IMO. So sorry!
Paulie too - it was all day K in a new school
juli - What were you teaching, or have you recently graduated?
Paulie too - and they had tons of storage and a technology lab
Paulie too - I taught for 6 yrs in CA and then moved back here thinking a church school was opening this year but it is delayed
Paulie too - so nwo I am not teaching
juli - My sister just got an aide position in first grade and I'm so jealous. I think starting back as an aide would be great for me since now I have the kids. But then again after a week I might feel stifed.
Paulie too - so I jsut keep trying to keep up on the latest and come to chat
Paulie too - but if you have a 2nd income u might be able to do that
juli - I think I'll need to spend more time here, as well. This is my first time here in so many years.
Paulie too - another group comes in at 8 Pacific but usually soem of us just stay here for all the chats and in between too
juli - Yes, dh owns his own business. But I don't know if I'd like working for 8 bucks an hour!
Paulie too - Be sure to read the baords too as it keeps u up to date on new things happening
juli - Have you taken any online courses?
Paulie too - nope but I was thinking about it
Paulie too - Have u?
juli - I'm wondering how beneficial they are from a school districts perspective.
Paulie too - I have heard there are some good ones
juli - No, I haven't taken any yet. I used to get info from Heinnemans (sp?) and might check there again.
Paulie too - I haven't heard of that one
juli - It's a teacher's resource print publ.
Paulie too - o
juli - So, Paulie, what would be your ideal position?
Paulie too - ESD #112 is about 4 blocks from me so I get their booklet each quarter
Paulie too - they also offer online classes but I usually just take their teacher or tech classes right here
juli - When you said you moved back, where were you referring to?
Paulie too - all day K with developmental practices that uses Building Blocks and stresses art and computers besides literacy in reading and writing and math and has lots of storage for my things
juli - LMAO! Hi Sharon!
sharon - What is ESD#112?
juli - Paulie are you gone again?!
Paulie - was in a spin and it would not send so had to restart
juli - Sharon, what do you teach
Paulie - ESD = educational service district
sharon - now, second grade
Paulie - from CA to WA
sharon - Taught first for six years and loved it
juli - I taught second grade two years myself. Liked it, but liked first better.
Paulie - Juli why were u laughing at my response?
Paulie - I taught 2nd gr one year If I can't teach K I want 2nd gr
Paulie - I taught first just one year it was ok
juli - Oh, only because that was exactly what I should've guessed you'd say.
sharon - I moved to a new school and they didn't have a first grade open
Paulie - o
sharon - So the last 2 years I had a 2 & 3 class
sharon - This year only second
Paulie - I like 2nd because I liek to teach them to write and they are at a stage where they are beginning to grasp techniques in 2nd gr
juli - Well, you two, gotta go. It's ben fun!
SANDY - I just started teaching K for a K maternity leave. I taught pre-k last year. I was just looking for ideas
Paulie - for what?
Paulie - Have u posted also on the K chatboard? everyone tries to help there
SANDY - Anything. No, this is the first time that I actually signed on to talk.
Paulie - If you have a topic maybe I can help
SANDY - I usually just read through them
Paulie - that is good but u can also ask for specific help do you have any specific ???? now? More will coem to chat in half hr too
Paulie - I taught K three eyars
Paulie - years
Paulie - will u just teach a few month or the rest of year?
SANDY - I have a little girl who seems to think it is OK to not follow instructions. She just goes through the day doing whatever, whenever. I asked if her hearing was Ok and she said yes! The aid in the class says she is always this way. So I guess I am wondering how to keep her focused and on task with out teaching to her directly constantly?
Paulie - can she be your helper?
SANDY - Yes, I have the class until x-mas
Paulie - How long has school been in session with the other teacher?
SANDY - Yes, but I have to give her the instructions at least 5 times for ever action.
SANDY - We started August 12
Paulie - you say instructions ask another child to repeat and then ask her to repeat
Paulie - mayeb she won't feel "picked" on if you ask someone else first
Paulie - what kind of rules do u have?
Paulie - did u begin the eyar with the class?
SANDY - No, I have shadowed the teacher a few times, and this is the first week to be on my own.
Paulie - Feel like I am talking to myself
Paulie - oic and the teacher did not tell you what she does with ehr?
SANDY - Her class is set up where the kids learn self discipline and are able to be responsible for thier actions
Paulie - Do u have contact with the teacher?
Paulie - o that is good she must use Dr marshall's plan then
SANDY - She has sent a few notes home with mom, and they feel like mom and dad have always done everything for her. therefor she does what she wants when she wants to.
Paulie - we have a chat on wed at the end of the mno with Dr marshall coem for it 5 PM Pacific time
SANDY - Today when she lost her recess, she said good becasue it is hot outside!
Paulie - Sounds liek maybe she is in the "Bothering" mode for this type of classroom discipline
SANDY - Most of the time I am wondering if she even hears what I am saying
SANDY - I don't understand
Paulie - So then she should ahve had to sit at a table outside int he hot sun
SANDY - She lost recess today meaning she will have to sit out tomorrow
Paulie - dr marshall has his discipline plan online you can get the link from teachersnet gazette
Paulie - it is http://www.marvinmarshall.com
SANDY - I remember hearing his name on Oprah I think
Paulie - He wrote a wonderful newsletter article this mo in the gazette too at teachersnet
SANDY - thanks I bookmarked it
Paulie - His plan is wonderful
Paulie - He wrote a wonderful artcle about the Horse Whisperer in this month gazette
SANDY - I have found myself directly teaching to her. going over every direction and I feel that is taking away from the rest of the class
Paulie - why can't your aide sit by her
Paulie - sometiems if you are talking to whole class and stand near her she will pay attention
Paulie - before dr marshall I believed in rewards
SANDY - I also would like tips on kepping students together. Today we were doing the Ss page and we were on the 3rd step and when I was able to walk around the room I noticed there were 3 who had not even began. How do I make sure that they are keeping up?
Paulie - the reward is a good education and she gets that by following class procedures and self discipline
Paulie - ask them to raise their hand when they ahve it finished (that part0 or some other fun signal
Paulie - u know like wiggle two fingers in the air or close your eyes
Paulie - or fold your arms
SANDY - that is what this teacher also believes and her class is very well behaved. I have learned SO much in the few weeks just being around her, and the way her room is set up
Paulie - something that won't bother the rest of the class
Paulie - you got a lucky job then
SANDY - we have been using hold your pencil in the air, but it seems that the quicker students get tired of holding their arms up
Paulie - well then ahve them fold arms
Paulie - mayeb tell them to check their work before they hold hands up
Paulie - what is your aide doing while you are teaching?
SANDY - I got very lucky! I just moved to the area and got the position when I enrolled my own son in K! I also live 1 minuste from the school! How much better could I have had it? other than a permannt position!!!I feel very fortunate and blessed!
Paulie - Yes it is great u are teaching your own child?
Paulie - that was two comments sorry
SANDY - How much time should I spend? Should I wait until each student is finshed and walk around until? No my son is in with another teacher down the hall. We have 4 Ks
Paulie - o that is good about your child
Paulie - t is your aide doing?
Paulie - waht
Paulie - what
SANDY - She has a break during that time and usually is doing other things
Paulie - Can't you also talk to the rest of the 4 K teachers? We had grade level meetings and that helped
SANDY - I don't think she is in there at the time of teaching she has other duties too
Paulie - Well, I would ask her to change her break time and help with this child
Paulie - o
Paulie - well this is too long to let her keep on with this
Paulie - if she interrupts u and your teaching of whole class BUT
SANDY - I have been talking with my sons teacher. She is a lot of help. Just getting more ideas. She says I need to teach to the majority and stand near her like you said!
Paulie - I know a first gr teacher that let one little hyper girl stand at her desk instead of sitting and it worked miracles It was not punishment it was just good way for her hyperactivity problem to be solved
Paulie - How are the seats arranged?
Paulie - can u place her near the front
SANDY - Yes, I am frustrated only because it is with every instruction. We have tables of 8, 4 on each side
SANDY - She is in the front
Paulie - I hope some more teachers coem to offer you suggestions -- it is now tiem for the "late chat"
SANDY - what is the late chat
Paulie - maybe she needs a seat off to the side then
Paulie - 8PM Pacific same thing
Paulie - they used to just have this one but some people like me on west coast could not make it if we had meetings so they made an early and late chat
SANDY - she still does not understand back of the line, or she chooses to cut and disrupt every time. She's not disruptive I just wnat her to get it!
Paulie - How many kdis do u have?
SANDY - 33
Paulie - by yourself?????
Paulie - good grief
SANDY - for the most part the aid helps with all the copying, recess, luch duty files etc
Paulie - maybe you ahve to review procedures again one a day
Paulie - I would rather ahve an aide help with teaching than do that with that big a class
SANDY - over the last 2 days we have moved her to the end7 times and have taken her card
SANDY - n't understand, she explains it back to me after we talk about it and then the next time she comes out of the RR or we need to line up she just goes wherever she wants to
SANDY - we wer e to circle all the Ss in the area and I was doing it on the overhead and she still circleld every letter on the sheet
SANDY - I think that I am going to check out the site you gave me thanks for the help!
Paulie - sigh everyone left -- guess that is what happens when the thingie keeps spinning and u can't post and have to restart. . .
Paulie - well I will wait to see if marsha shows up
Paulie - What grade are u teahing this year?
Wendy - how are these chats? Doesn't look like there's been too much activity. I teach 1st.
Paulie - sorry ...type too fast and sometimes it looks weird
Paulie - well everyone left
Paulie - There were people here for the early chat
Paulie - some teaachers have back to school nite tonight
Wendy - Oh.... had that last Thurs.
Paulie - I usually show up for the early oen and we run into the hour that no one is supposed to be here and then I stay for the late one too
Paulie - there is still a half hr people might come
Paulie - Ususally quite a number of teachers here at various times
Wendy - What grade do you teach?
Paulie - not working this year YET
Paulie - I hope to teach K again or 2nd gr
Wendy - Ahhhhhhhh. Hope you find something soon!!
Paulie - well I am not too good at marketing myslef unfortunately
Wendy - What state are you from?
Paulie - thanks
Paulie - WA now
Paulie - ou?
Paulie - you
Wendy - New Jersey
Paulie - o you are up late
Paulie - I taught first gr one year did u need help?
Wendy - They're always saying there's a glut of teaching positions, but you can't prove that by me. They are hard to get here....good ones.
Paulie - understand
Paulie - here we ahve many teachers applying for the open positions
Wendy - No..I don't need help, in fact, I was just going to peek in and see how this worked. I've been up trying to clean up from my little piggies here at home. Oy!!
Paulie - How long have u taught first gr?
Paulie - oic
Paulie - well this is how it works usually lots more here tho
Wendy - LOL We're crossing each other....I'm teaching 1st for the 2nd yr.
Paulie - how many little piggies u got at home?
Wendy - Well, I have three little ones, 18, 13 and 11...not so little....and then there's the big piggy....and me.
Paulie - mine are all grown
Wendy -
Paulie - lol oic I ahve 4 grandkids
Wendy - How nice! Grandkids! Mybe that's one way I'll get a little girl! I have all boys. I insist on every pet we get to be female.
Paulie - lol It took me three tries to get a girl
Paulie - now the grandkids are two of each
Wendy - But you got her! That's nice...oh my...you have a full quiver. That's wonderful.
Paulie - so far
Wendy - Well, I need to hit the hay, because what I usually do it wake up about 5:30 and prep for the day here at home. I need to be sure all my centers are in order....you know, those 1st grade centers.
Paulie - get a good sleep and enjoy those first graers!
Paulie - graders
Wendy - Someone on line had the idea of running a large number of centers with small groups and keeping them up for 2 weeks, that's what I'm trying. 20 kids, 10 centers for 2 weeks.
Paulie - sounds interesting
Wendy - I don't know if you've been on the ring...but I'm the Wendy that's been talking about vocal problems....HA! I can just hear myself tomorrow trying to keep my voice down. Well...we'll try.
Paulie - oh yes I read those
Paulie - get better
Wendy - Thanks, and goodnight. Hope you catch the big one soon. You will.
Paulie -
Paulie - Thanks
