Rose - hi
Barbie/K/WI - hi, are we the only ones here?!?!
Rose - looks that way -- I came late
Barbie/K/WI - everybody must be as tired as I am
Barbie/K/WI - do you teach K?
Rose - everyone must be out voting or getting dinner late as they voted after school?
Barbie/K/WI - that's true
Barbie/K/WI - just got the baby to bed
Rose - that is a relief! I bet
Barbie/K/WI - are you all day or 1/2? I am 1/2 day - 2 sessions
Rose - all day I love it have been half day
Barbie/K/WI - I feel like I am going nuts this year trying to fit it all in!
Barbie/K/WI - trying Building Blocks and now have our Reading Recovery teacher in for 1/2 hr and it's caos!
Rose - half days are a challenge
Rose - why does the reading recovery teacher come in?
Barbie/K/WI - our district will NEVER go all day
Barbie/K/WI - extra Reading support
Rose - sad that they only thing of the money in hiring another teacher or getting a new building for k
Addie/mo - is reading recovery a pullout for k or is it a push in (early literacy)
Rose - Why are they giving extra reading support in K half days so soon in the year?
Barbie/K/WI - she is in the room
Jen - What Reading program is everyone using?
Addie/mo - we have reading recovery in our school and the rr teacher goes in and does a class lesson with kindergarten, but second semester she will work with a group when they begin guided reading
Barbie/K/WI - well, apparently, the other teacher and I aren't doing our jobs right! lol
Barbie/K/WI - she is a wonderful resource
Rose - guess they don't expect u to be developmental in K anymore?
Barbie/K/WI - according to our new standards we have to have the kids reading and identifying 25 words by the end of the year and we have a lot of low income kids
Jen - We have a program called EIP Early Intervention Program that works with students at risk as well as other students,
Addie/mo - our school uses balanced literacy which is not a program per se, but a philosophy. we use the fountas and pinnell method of guided reading along with shared reading, self selected reading, writing to, with , and by students and word work
Barbie/K/WI - I swear... we feel like we are teaching 1st grade!
Addie/mo - balanced literacy is done k-3 in my building
Barbie/K/WI - with only 2 1/2 hours a day
Rose - Sad isn't it? I wish all K could go back to being DAP
Addie/mo - we have full day k
Barbie/K/WI - lucky you
Rose - Addie u have a good program then
Jen - I use Literacy Centers, Building Blocks and Writer's Workshop.
Barbie/K/WI - in your centers are the students expected to do certain "assignments" first then free choice
Addie/mo - i think we do. we are part of the missouri reading initiative, which is a three year training program. the school is in its third year of the program. i left out literacy corners in grades k-2, third grade uses some lit corners, but is organized in literature circles
Jen - Our problem is that we don't have enough sets of books to use for guided reading
Barbie/K/WI - Oh, I got a flyer for a Jean Feldman (?) workshop, anyone familiar with her?
Rose - Is that Dr jean?
Barbie/K/WI - I'm pretty sure
Addie/mo - jen, that is a problem. have you seen the website readingatoz.com? they have leveled readers that you can print out, but you have to pay a membership fee.
Barbie/K/WI - I've looked at that too Addie. One of our 1st grade teachers uses those. Loves them!
Rose - there are 30 books there u can print free too
Jen - I use EIP centers in the morning. The students rotate daily so that they go to every center by the end of the week. After lunch I do Writer's Workshop and free choice Developmental centers
Jen - Thanks for the info on the website.
Rose - well not free it is your ink and paper
Barbie/K/WI - or your schools if you do all your printing on the weekend! Shhhh!
Addie/mo - yes, but i would say it is much cheaper than purchasing guided reading materials from wright group or rigby
Addie/mo - what math programs do you all use?
Rose - maybe but the wright group and Rigby have more sturdy covers
Addie/mo - true, rose, you get what you pay for!
Barbie/K/WI - we have Heath(?) Connections...none of us use it though
Addie/mo - is that a workbook based program?
Rose - I love heath Connections when I taught 2nd gr
Barbie/K/WI - we just make sure that we cover everything in our standards
Jen - Our problem is that we are only provided with 3 packs of Xerox paper each month. It stretches pretty thin.
Barbie/K/WI - most of our math is during calendar time
Rose - I look at standards and choose manipulatives appropriate I don't liek papers that are worksheets for K
Barbie/K/WI - oh wow, Jen! I should never complain!
Barbie/K/WI - there are workbooks for each unit with connections, yes
Rose - Yes Connections is workbook -- well for 2nd it was but ahd so many suggested activities on TE pages
Addie/mo - rose, do you have them record their work with manipulatives at some point with symbolic or pictorial representations?
meeha/ece/tx - 3 packs for the entire school ... grade level ... teacher?
Barbie/K/WI - I used the workbooks the first year, very colorful but a waste of money if you don't like sit down paper work!
Rose - yes use rubber stamps
Rose - and they also write numbers later in year
Addie/mo - i'll bet the kids enjoy stamping...are they special stamps that come with the manipulatives?
Jen - Somebody was asking about Dr. Jean. I've seen her several times. She used to teach in our county and she has done several staff development inservices. I saw her last year at the Kindergarten Conference. She has soooo many neat ideas.
Rose - nope I ahd to buy myself have pattern block ones, bears, numbers, etc
Jen - The 3 packs are for each teacher monthly.
Addie/mo - sounds neat, i had a bear stamp when i taught k, but not others to go with manips.
Rose - also use rubber stamp for geobaords
Barbie/K/WI - good Jen, thanks, I need to pick a workshop for this year and I didn't know if I should ask my principal to go to that one or wait until the Kindergarten conference later in the year
Rose - they stamp those and draw things with colored pen
Jackie/SD - I will use the workbook pages as "homework" for my students. I tell my students to go home and show their parents what they've learned. Hopefully, if the students have and problems in certain areas, parents will help out. Then students bring that paper back to school for a treat. Seems to work well.
meeha/ece/tx - 3 packs per month would leave my room standing in paper!
Rose - have different bear stamps (colors) so they can do patterning too
Addie/mo - 3 packs of 500 sheets? That is 1500 sheets a month! i would think that would last all month
Rose - and also use small diecuts for that
Rose - of anything
Jackie/SD - Some of my students are having great difficulty with patterning. I've used colored pasta, differents pattern shapes cut from colored paper. Wow!
Rose - well I use the paper for newsletter each week too
Addie/mo - i just quickly estimated what i used to use, even counting a weekly newsletter and i would have used less than half of that. do you have two classes?
Barbie/K/WI - when you break it down like that Addie, that is true
Jen - The great thing about a Kindergarten Conference is that you get several ideas from a variety of presenters. You meet teachers from all types of schools.
meeha/ece/tx - Jackie -- do you use your calendar for teaching patterning?
Jackie/SD - Yes!
Barbie/K/WI - 1/2 day does make a difference, I have to run 39 copies of anything for all my students
Rose - and sometimes I ahve printed those little books that you get like about each color
Rose - for each child
AdrienneHC - Is anyone in the room using the Hougton Miflin series Legacy of Literacy
Rose - for their personal libraries
Addie/mo - jen, was that the kindergarten conference in kansas city? one of my kindergarten teachers went to that and came back with this thick book of ideas ! it was great!
Barbie/K/WI - not me Adrienne
Jackie/SD - I also use a number line. We also count and use patterning, such as clap and stomp
Rose - y color and read and take home because many don't get taken to library or own even one book
Rose - hi Adrienne not me do u use it and like it?
Addie/mo - i had full day when i was figuring my numbers and estimated 7 sheets per student per week, but that was probably generous
AdrienneHC - where do you teach that children don't even own one book?
Barbie/K/WI - for those of you that teach all day, how many kids do you have?
meeha/ece/tx - I have a HUGE roll of stickers (happy faces) I bought at Wal-Mart ... my kiddos are starting to use them for creating or extending patterns
Jackie/SD - I have 17 students full day!
Rose - 22
Barbie/K/WI - do your districts put a limit on k enrollment?
AdrienneHC - is this chat mostly for kindergarten?
Jen - It does sound like a lot of paper until you figure in all the math practice sheets we are required to use and the science papers we have to copy because our count did not spend the money on consumable workbooks. I also have 25 students.
AdrienneHC - if so I will see you all later
Rose - preschool thru 2nd gr
Addie/mo - our kindergarten classes each have 23, but we are adding another k teacher and the classes will be down to 16, 16, and 14. our state standard says minimal standards are 22 and desired standards are 20 in k
Barbie/K/WI - one of our 1/2 day teachers has 24 and 26 in her AM and PM and the numbers can keep rising!
meeha/ece/tx - Barbie -- state of TX limits K to no more than 22 per classroom.
Jackie/SD - No, our district does not put a limit on kindergarten enrollment.
AdrienneHC - ok well I really need help with my new reading series so I am going to surf around and see if there is anyone out there
Jackie/SD - I've had as high as 25, and as small as 12.
Addie/mo - in missouri, there isnt a state law that requires a certain size, but if you dont follow the standards, it can affect you accreditation
Barbie/K/WI - I asked one of our principals and she said they would do nothing, no extra teacher or aide if our numbers keep going up! No Money!
meeha/ece/tx - Adrienne -- I don't use a reading curriculum with my kiddos -- hope you find the help you need!
meeha/ece/tx - Barbie -- are you all willing to or interested in parents helping in the classroom?
Jen - Addie, The K conference that I went to was in Atlanta, Ga. I have gone the last 3 years.
Addie/mo - cool
meeha/ece/tx - Have you all put your heads together and thought about how you could train parents to be an active, integral part of the daily function of the classroom?
Jackie/SD - I've had a full time aide for the last 10 years. This year, I have to share an aide with another kindergarten class. I also have a sped child who has a full time aide.
Barbie/K/WI - yes, but when I have to beg and plead to get help on field trips and at parties, I don't think I would get much help in the classroom!
Jackie/SD - I haven't had much luck in getting parents in to help.
meeha/ece/tx - ((I actually LIKE parents in my room ... it makes it a lot more possible for them to carry out/extend at home what we do at school!))
Barbie/K/WI - that is one reason our Reading Recovery teacher is in our rooms for a 1/2 each session
Barbie/K/WI - I have really considered getting a student teacher
Barbie/K/WI - that would probablly be more work for me though
meeha/ece/tx - brb ... going to get dinner off the stove!
Jen - Our state standards state k with a para 22. Without a Para 18. We have 6 Kindergartens and we have just added on Another teacher. We just don't hve any place for her to go until they move another teacher out to a trailer.
Barbie/K/WI - we are so close to a university, I don't understnand why we don't send them to our school for their participation and obsevation
Barbie/K/WI - I have said I would move into a church with no phy ed or music just to be all day!
Jackie/SD - You are very lucky to be so close to a university. I wish I was that lucky!
Jen - One year I had 32 students. Talk about crowded.
Barbie/K/WI - yes, and for my observation and participation in college they sent me to a daycare where I rubbed backs at nap time!
Barbie/K/WI - talk about a waste
Jackie/SD - Jen, I hope you had lots of help with that many students! How could you meet all their needs?
meeha/ece/tx - Barbie -- make a contact ... ask the profs. in education if they are in need of add'l "lab" / observation / field experience sites!
Barbie/K/WI - how did you survive Jen!?!
Vic - Hi Rose.
Barbie/K/WI - hi Rose
Barbie/K/WI - I really need to meeha!
Carol/pre K/WI - Barbie , checking into a student teacher I don't think its going to get much better in the state for teachers ant time soon
Rose - hi again barbie -- this chat started with just us . . .
Barbie/K/WI - yep
Vic - Todaywas the last day for my college participant. We will really miss her. We are near 2 colleges
Barbie/K/WI - Carol, did you hear who won for governer?
meeha/ece/tx - Barbie -- you might also check with student leadership teacher at local h.s.! We have a cadre of students who visit our campus weekly to help out in classrooms!
Jen - I had 1 para & an EIP teacher. She was only in for an our hour. I was also pregnant that year . We had kids using housekeeping and sth sand table for a desk. The kids were wonderful even though it was crowded.
Carol/pre K/WI - No, been at the library all night working on master's journal; article
Jackie/SD - I'm going to slip out and check out the SD election races! It is very close this year for governor, and in the Senate!
Vic - I have 1 university tutor, 1 college participant, and I had 1 student in for a 2 hour observation. I feel like I've got a revolving door.
Barbie/K/WI - and I think I am going to bed, thanks for all your good advice all!
Carol/pre K/WI - Goodnight all also its been along day.
Vic - Has anyone had any experience with a lame duck administrator?
meeha/ece/tx - it has been awhile since i was there, Vic!
Jen - Good luck to every body. I hope everyone elects strong supporters of Education. I enjoyed chatting with everyone. Goodnight.
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, Jen -- take care.
Vic - I have one right now and after today, I'm not sure I want to go back tomorrow.
meeha/ece/tx - Bless your heart -- what happened, Vic?
inatizzy - what happened?
Vic - A student who has threatened to bring bullets to school before and light them with firecrackers to blow me up, threatened the administrator today that he was going to bring a gun to school tomorrow.
Rose - I had a gun threat when I taught 4th gr
inatizzy - yikes!
Vic - The principal finally called the police. They came and said that he needs to be hospitalized immediately.
Addie/mo - the student should be so expelled
Rose - instead they brought big pocket knives -- 4 of them
Vic - All I knew until the end of the day is that he had gone off this a.m.
Lucy - Does anyone have the text for the we the people book?
Rose - my student was given a three day suspension and then allowed back in school
Vic - Then at 2:30, I was told this story, after they had sent him to my room for the day.
Rose - what is We the People book? something about the constitution?
inatizzy - why was he sent to your room?
meeha/ece/tx - Vic -- the student was NOT hospitalized? (but ... can the police say that?...) I think I might have "chalkboard fever" tomorrow!
meeha/ece/tx - We the People book???
Vic - He's threatened to bring a knife to school, that he did have a knife (he didn't), and he has physically assaulted so many other children in the building, as they won't let me restrain any longer, even though I'm trained. He has bipolar, and his mother has lied to the doctor. We called the doctor today.
meeha/ece/tx - how old is the student?
Vic - Nope meeha, not hospitalized, sent to my room.
Vic - The little kiddo is just in 2nd grade and about the size of a beginning 1st grader.
Rose - Lucy is it a picture book?
Lucy - no
meeha/ece/tx - Is the district offering any counselling for the student? He certainly isn't getting the help he needs!
Vic - I've asked and asked and asked for help. He's been suspended for over the 10 day limit, and still, he is sent back to my room. I don't know how much more of this I can take.
Rose - guess I don't know anything about it then sorry
Vic - Meeha, I've had the counselor talk to him, but when he is out of control (daily) you can't talk to him.
Lucy - made by the center of civic education
Rose - maybe u can find it online did you do a Google.com search?
meeha/ece/tx - what state, Vic? We can write a letter refusing the student access to our room ... unions are good about supporting teachers when such need arises (just be SURE you have strong documentation re: behavior prior to taking that step!)
Vic - This is just one of 5 EXTREMELY volitale students that I have this year. Yep, I do teach special needs, but these kids are the worse group that I've had EVER, and I've been doing this for over 20 years.
Lucy - excellent idea
Vic - meeha, IA. I talked to my union steward today. He told me to contact the special ed. director tomorrow a.m.
Vic - sorry everyone. Only a she not a he.
Rose - ut I say he when I don't know
Vic - It's easier to read, that's for sure.
Rose - ause that is the way I was brought up (masculine word if not known)
Vic - So, any other advice anyone. I'm really tired, exhauste, and not sure where to go next.
meeha/ece/tx - Vic -- I had a young lady like that last year ... kinder-aged ... most frustrating student I've ever worked with ... poor baby was "broken" when I got her and I couldn't "fix" her ... I was SO distressed!
Vic - meeha, been there done that, what or how did you survive?
meeha/ece/tx - Your classroom ED, Vic?
meeha/ece/tx - Have you seen the "TOUGH KID TOOLBOX" or similar social skills books?
Vic - multi-cat. meeha. My kinders have learned that you get out of class by throwing a chair.
Vic - No, tell me about it..
meeha/ece/tx - She moved on to a new district, with an aunt who wanted to "do right by her" ... we loved her, just weren't the right placement for her!
meeha/ece/tx - Well, let me pull it real quick -- just bought it -- have seen some presentations from it!
Vic - I don't feel any longer that I am the right place for him either. Can't tell you the last time I got any work out of him.'
meeha/ece/tx - "THE TOUGH KID TOOL BOX provides teachers at all grade levels with straightforward, classroom tested, ready to use materials for managing and motivating tough-to-teach students."
Vic - I have k-3rd grade this year and it has been one of the most difficult of my career. I'm not sleeping, not eating, having major migraines, and my back (previous injury from an assault by a student) has really been acting up. I'm ready to just go on disability and call it good.
meeha/ece/tx - It is "designed for teachers who want to save time buy who also want to use effective, positive procedures to manage "tough kid" behavior in their classrooms."
Vic - Who wrote/publishes it meeha?
meeha/ece/tx - Wm. Jenson, Ph.D., G. Rhode, Ph.D., and H.K. REavis, Ed.D are authors\
Rose - where did u get it? online?
meeha/ece/tx - sopris west ... http://www.sopriswest.com
meeha/ece/tx - actually I kind of 'lucked out' -- found it at the 1/2 price book store the other day!
Vic - Any good ideas?
Vic - Rose, I'm glad to see that you are still here.
Vic - Thanks for the link meeha.
Rose - why? did u think I left?
Vic - You've been quiet. I think that I'm "hogging" the discussion tonight. Sorry
Rose - no problem . . . sometimes it si good to listen
Rose - you have the problem . . . glad u could ask for help and meeha had an answer
Rose - I love looking in bookstores sometimes I could spend all my money there, Meeha
meeha/ece/tx - I'll need to look at it more -- but it looks like there is no need to "re-invent the wheel" with this book ... there are charts and potential "motivators" beyond any I've ever seen!
Vic - k. We've been calling his bluff lately and he is backing down a bit, but I'm exhausted by 1 every day. Luckily I have a terrific husband who doesn't mind cooking when he gets home. I eat and go to bed, I'm working on updating IEP's and report cards for conferences Thurs. & Fri.
Rose - no one hogs the discussion here we talk when we ahve soemthign to contribute
meeha/ece/tx - Rose -- me, too!
Rose - I wish I ahd that book several years back
Vic - I wonder if my district will splurge for this for me.
Rose - {{{{{{Vic}}}}}} I wish you luck
meeha/ece/tx - Vic -- when you find yourself in such a situation as this it is important to get the suport and help you need!
Rose - doesn't hurt to ask
meeha/ece/tx - I don't know what the original price was ... I got it (almost new!) for $6.98!
Rose - Gosh I forgot Addie was here too
Vic - I guess that that is why I'm here tonight. I had a meltdown after school in the office tonight.
Vic - Me too Rose
Rose - Glad u stopped by even if to just vent Vic
Vic - When I wasn't getting the support I needed from my union steward, I lost it.
Rose - don't blame u
Vic - Then my husband got home and they told him that he is going on salary instead of hourly starting on Friday, for an $8,000/yr. pay cut. Not exactly what I needed tonight.
Rose - gosh so sorry
meeha/ece/tx - Vic -- not the best day!
Rose - Things have got to get better -- don't know if they can get worse. . .
Vic - nope.
Vic - Don't say that Rose.
Rose -
meeha/ece/tx - Vic -- I might be inclined to buy it new (for myself) and not wait for the district -- only $19.50!
Vic - me too
Rose - why not soudns pretty "down" to me
Vic - Thanks meeha, I may just order it tonight.
meeha/ece/tx - I'd go for it, Vic ...
meeha/ece/tx - encourage administrator to order a copy, too!
Vic - Thanks for the suggestion meeha.
meeha/ece/tx - I'm trying to think of the other book I got last year ... about angry children ... title just isn't coming!
Vic - Definitely will talk to administrator about it tomorrow too. I definitely need to confront him (he's retiring at the end of the year) about his lack of communication to me today. This CAN"T continue. I need to know these things.
meeha/ece/tx - check out the sopriswest website ... looks like they may be a well-spring of info!
Rose - definitely
Vic - I had this happen to me (lack of communication) one other time when a student brought a loaded gun and crack to school and I was inches from his face all period. That's when I switched to elementary.
meeha/ece/tx - Well, it wasn't just you he put in danger today -- every other child and adult in that building is at-risk when a child is threatening such violence! It is FAR better to hyper-react early in that situation and aim for damage control after-the-fact than to assume the "wait and see" stance!
Rose - well they brings guns and knives in elementary now too
meeha/ece/tx - If he is retiring at the end of the school year he still has several months to work! If that isn't happening ... well, as I said above ... DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT!
Vic - yep, and drugs too. We had that last year, and the drug dogs went all through the school. Ugh!!!!! Our "education" governor (NOT) looks like he's going to be re-elected. I don't think that Iowa's kids can take any more of his bright ideas.
meeha/ece/tx - ... and do it at home ... paper/pen notes
Vic - I have a 3" 3-ring binder full of notes on students and admins. response. Been doing that since day 1
meeha/ece/tx - can you find some strengths in the students who are giving you so much trouble ... build on their interests and strengths?
Vic - One of my little kinders, who decided to throw chairs yesterday, well, his mom NOW thinks that he needs to go back to preschool.
Rose - why go back to preschool? maybe parents need to work with him more at home
meeha/ece/tx - frustrated ... not ready to handle the work at the kinder level!
Vic - Let's see, strengths. He likes bows and arrows and shooting. Don't think that will work, but maybe wild animals?????? What do you think?
meeha/ece/tx - wild animals ... yes!
Vic - Rose, you are exactly right, mom too busy (single parent) doing ecstasy and making her 9th baby that is due in Dec.
Rose - maybe zoo animals
Vic - hmmmmmmm
meeha/ece/tx - you COULD use an arrow to a target as a kind of incentive, though ... like x number of moves from start to target, end result = some "reinforcer" he would enjoy?
Rose - really sad being a single parent is no excuse I was and my three kids were all great -- in gifted classes
Vic - He read a book about rattlesnakes today, seemed to enjoy that.
Rose - of course we had books and went to the library soemtiems twice a week
Vic - meeha, thanks for the suggestion, did try that, he doesn't even make it into my class many days. Today was one of those.
meeha/ece/tx - Wild animals ... what grade level, 2nd? what does he need to do to meet state guidelines? think "individualized education"! what is a good book at his level in this genre?\
Rose - maria what gr do u teach?
Vic - meeha, unfortunately only reading on a level 4-6 DRA.
meeha/ece/tx - okay, then picture cards with animal names, country names ... maybe could earn pics for a book by learning to "read" the name and country or continent where the animal lives?
Vic - Cool, thanks meeha, you've been a TREMENDOUS help tonight. I've got 3 more kinder. report cards to do, so I better go. Again, thanks everyone.
meeha/ece/tx - "The _____ lives in _____. It is ____ there." The tiger lives in India. It is hot there."

meeha/ece/tx - Vic -- you might also post a note at the beh. mgmt. and SPED chat boards and see if you can get some additional ideas for working with your troubled kiddos!
Vic - Yep, I got the addy
meeha/ece/tx - keep me posted!
Just Me/Mi - Good news! We have a new govenor! Jennifer Granholm - 1st female gov in MI No more Engler!
Vic - Thank meeha, you have been a wealth of info. tonight. I haven't been real thrilled with the sped board lately. Lots of personal attacks on there.
Rose - great Just me
Rose - sorry u have a cold Just me
Just Me/Mi - All the kids in my class have one. I didn't want to be left out!
Rose - I don't mind being left out of that kind of sharing Just me
Vic - Rose, thanks for your help as well. I really need to get these report cards done now. So off I go for real this time, or it will be another 1 a.m. night. Have a good one. Wish me luck with conferences on Thurs. and Fri. I do have some good news. One little fella (another 2nd gr.) who was supposed to be a real handful and has lots of extra support from outside agenso
meeha/ece/tx - I don't do much more than the ECE board most of the time, Vicc.
Rose - Vic, it is so sad that people have to attack each other on a support baord. . .
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, Vic ... blessings!
Rose - nite Vic
Just Me/Mi - Is anyone else about to start parent-teacher conferences? We do ours next week.
Vic - agencies, is being integrated out for reading now and soon, we start him out for math as well. He is waaaay toooo advanced for the rest of my class.
meeha/ece/tx - Rose -- daughter came in for help with homework!
Rose - wonderful Vic
meeha/ece/tx - JM -- I do conferences "when" and "where" my parents wish!
Vic - where is the ECE board meeha? I'm just aware of the sped board?
meeha/ece/tx - Vic, that is SOOOOO cool!
Rose - well u got to help her too I was just commenting because this site usually been running into trouble for this talk
meeha/ece/tx - Vic -- if you go to the t.net homepage and follow the link to chat boards, in the left corner where the "grades" are, EC is the top board!
Rose - jsut click on chatboards at top of teachers net and youw ill see them for preschool, K and primary upper grades and more
Rose - meeha why that kind of schedule?
meeha/ece/tx - There are more than 100 chatboards here at t.net!
Vic - duh!!!!!!! I think I need to go to bed. Bye everyone and I'll be back, maybe I'll be able to help all of you next time.
Rose - Vic take care
meeha/ece/tx - Rose -- sped preschool aged kiddos ... I just find the when and where needed schedule for conferences works well for parents and me!
milymo/oh/k - Just Me, we are doing P/T conferences next week too.
meeha/ece/tx - 'nite, Vic!
meeha/ece/tx - Hi, Susan!
Susan - meeha have u been checking out the prek curriculums
Vic - nite everyone and thanks all of you, you really helped.
Susan - hi everyone
Just Me/Mi - I meet with parents as needed too, but next week the district schedules two nights and a full day with no kids to meet with parents.
Rose - sounds like a plan meeha
meeha/ece/tx - If I had to do conferences when the school said to do them, well, often they are just not needed then!
Just Me/Mi - Hi Susan
meeha/ece/tx - Susan, no ... is pre-k getting curriculum in TX next year? I work PPCD moreso than Prek, we are the "after-thought" where curriculum is concerned!
Susan - yes I heard that DLM is really good this year
Susan - lol I teach PK and I'm hired by a School Dist but we are housed at HeadStart so talk about afterthoughts
meeha/ece/tx - I"ve always liked DLM's curriculum! ... although in reality I generally prefer "seat-of-my-pants" teacher-generated curriculum ... it flexes SO MUCH MORE when the kiddos don't get "A" we get to try it again!
Susan - we haven't seen anythg or heard anythg until I saw the news on Teachers net
Rose - sounds like a plan Meeha
milymo/oh/k - Ugh! Just remembered 7:45 staff meeting. Think I'll get to bed!
Rose - what is DLM?
milymo/oh/k - Goodnight everyone!
Susan - I like a curriculum because some of the teachers I work with would rather do crafts like a daycare
Rose - nite milymo
meeha/ece/tx - Well, we don't do so much "crafts" as art in my room ... lots of exploration ... process is more valued than product ... I like to get ideas from curriculum, but often there isn't the latitude needed to meet the needs of the variety of learning needs I must address -- at present we do have a scholastic (BUILDING LANGUAGE FOR LITERACY) kit, but I was REALLY disappointed with it.
Susan - one of my best friends teaches ppcd too
Susan - we have fun taking our classes over to her room to do activities with her kids
Susan - today we did spider stuff coz we missed last week
Susan - made spiders out of donuts, pretzels etc
meeha/ece/tx - There is no pre-k on my campus ... we really aren't overly-welcome to "visit" Kinder classes ... inclusion is a challenge!
Susan - we take turns taking our pk kids over to her room and she comes up with cute activities
Susan - like a spider song , book etc
meeha/ece/tx - last week we made "spider webs" by winding string around black poster-board (with small slits cut at the edges) again and again -- variety of "paths" ... then added plastic spiders. In the past we've made spiders using pipe-cleaners.
Susan - sds fun
Susan - talk to the k teachers and see if they would like to come to your class
Susan - and do stuff with your class
meeha/ece/tx - I've been attending an Early Literacy Academy ... and revising how parts of my day are done to enhance the language-development portion of the program to better prepare the kiddos for literacy!
Susan - I taught kinder for `15 yrs before teaching pk
meeha/ece/tx - I think my program coordinator is taking care of it next week ... she has a "plan" she has developed kind of unilaterally ... I'm hoping it is well-received!
Susan - and we did stuff with my friends class even then
meeha/ece/tx - all say they would love to, but none make time to do it!
Rose - how sad huh?
Susan - we just have so much to learn in Kinder now its more like 1st grade used to be
Rose - did Just me leave?
Susan - but our Pks take turns and there are 5 of us
Rose - I hope she gets rid of her cold
meeha/ece/tx - I know! the curriculum keeps filtering down ... pretty soon kiddos will have to be able to recite alphabet to leave nursery at the hospital at 3 days of age!
paranoid - I'm paranoid...have my first ever parent teacher conferences tomorrow
meeha/ece/tx - ahhh ... just relax!
paranoid - relax? HA what's that?
meeha/ece/tx - #1 -- say a positive about the child #2 -- talk about any "problems" #3 -- answer questions/concerns (or find out what they are and agree to get back if you don't know the answer!) #4 -- say another positive ...
Rose - I hope your first conference goes well then u will breeze thru
meeha/ece/tx - you're absolutely right, paranoid ... 1st year you can't relax! always so busy! good luck tomorrow.
paranoid - and of'course just brainstormed tonight...thought it would be nice to have a sheet for parents "How to help your child with math" "How to help your child with Reading" I teach 2nd....but now I'm stuck on what to put on the sheet
paranoid - thanks all...
Rose - I had a sheet of things you could do at home to help your child they covered all subjects
meeha/ece/tx - Susan -- I have program coordinator coming in Thursday a.m. to observe a kiddo and help me figure out what is "missing" in the programming I'm working with one child -- he's just not getting where I need him to go! (cognitively, communication-wise, motor-skills wise)
Just Me/Mi - Are there any other 2nd grade teachers in your building? Ask if any of them have a sheet like you want to use.
paranoid - What was on the sheet rose?
Rose - if you did dnot need it tomorrow I could find it but I don't have easy access to it now
paranoid - I did ask them and they don't
Rose - just think of skills they need and adapt to things they cand o around house
paranoid - math facts are big one!
Rose - I gave it to parents who wanted MORE homeowrk
meeha/ece/tx - Rose -- Ihad something on value of reading ... seems like it was associated with book-it programming
paranoid - and for reading...the big one is Retelling and Sequencing
meeha/ece/tx - Denise, welcome to the friendliest site on the web -- if you have any questions, just ask! Glad you're here!
denisewv - seems to be a pain to have t o go back and click update - any hints or shortcuts?
denisewv - actually that itme I hit enter by mistake and it went anyway
Just Me/Mi - Hit "enter" key
meeha/ece/tx - denise -- just hit the "enter" key on the keyboard\
Rose - I just looked in files I must have it somewhere else sorry
paranoid - that's ok Rose, don't worry about it, I'll figure something out
Rose - there is a good interactive site online tho for math It is http://www.mathcats.com
meeha/ece/tx - paranoid -- tell parents to watch for tips coming home in "weekly news notes" ... give parents a reading/lang. arts and a math "tip of the week"
Rose - paranoid the kdis could retell or even sequence their day activities in a journal
meeha/ece/tx - Providing brief info (small snippets) as in "tip of the week" makes the information a lot more palatable and more likely to be used for the parents.
Just Me/Mi - Good idea meeha - that give you time to get ideas and put it together the way you want it, Paranoid
Rose - hi teaherinsporst
paranoid - so far I have....practice math facts 5 minutes a night....learn 3 facts before trying to learn more, practice in the car, practice double facts, practice doubles plus one, practice with fact families
teaherinsporst - any off use have kids that wear diapers to your school
Rose - nope
meeha/ece/tx - some of mine do, teaher
paranoid - I like the "tip of the week idea"
Just Me/Mi - Sometimes when you give parents too much at conferences it is overwhelming and papers, etc. get put aside. Sending something a few days later may have a greater impact.
meeha/ece/tx - slow rolling room tonite!
teaherinsporst - how do u know if u got a priviet mes
meeha/ece/tx - smell, behavior, statement -- varies by child.
Just Me/Mi - none in diapers in my classes
meeha/ece/tx - where are you, teaher?
meeha/ece/tx - we also check them once or twice per 3-hour sessioin.
teaherinsporst - i am here
meeha/ece/tx - I"m in Texas ... are you Canadian ... Brit ... etc.?
meeha/ece/tx - paranoid ... giving the parents little bits of info ... small steps to support their children's learning ... can often help them learn to be more effective in helping their children learn.
paranoid - thanks for your help all, night
Rose - well the list of 99 things u can do was to be put on refrigerator and marked off . . .
Just Me/Mi - Enjoy your conferences paranoid.
Rose - enjoy? lol now that is quite a statement
meeha/ece/tx - good luck tomorrow, paranoid!
paranoid - enjoy, hmmm...yea first conferences ever and yet they fall on my b-day...yea I'll enjoy LOL
Rose - Happy Birthday paranoid! and many more. . .
meeha/ece/tx - well ... it is bedtimein TX for me ... 'nite all. hope to see you all again soon!
Rose - nite meeha
Just Me/Mi - Bye Meeha. Happy birthday Paranoid!
Just Me/Mi - I really don't mind conferences. Most of the parents just want to know that their child is doing what is expected.
Rose - But they get so long and tiring
Rose - Guess everyone is falling asleep
Rose - Just me were u here when the teacher from Poland was?
Just Me/Mi - Something is wrong. I'm getting private messages answering messages I didn't send. Things I sent to the room didn't show up on the screen.
Rose - I really enjoy when teachers from other countries visit here
Rose - hmmmmmm I got a private message from u and answered it
Rose - I have been here when the private message I sent got posted to whole room also
Rose - Well have a good hump day everyone I am calling it a night Get better just Me Hoep to see u next week
Just Me/Mi - Thanks rose. I hope to see you too. I'm going to leave too.
