Darcy - hi
Hock - I need an idea for a Kwanzaa project...any thoughts?
Darcy - I've been trying to figure that one out myself.
Hock - we are going to weave mats
Darcy - I found a great website they will give you some ideas.
Hock - what grade do u teach?
Hock - cool, what is it?
Darcy - HOLIDAYS PAGE
Darcy - oops. hold on a minute
Darcy - http://www.eagle.ca/~matink/holidays.html
Darcy - pre-k Headstart, and you?
Hock - oh I would love to teach the little guys
Hock - 12-1-1..K-2 right now
Hock - in actuality they function much lower
Darcy - what is 12-1-1?
Hock - Spec Ed for children with severe needs
Darcy - If some of mine functioned any lower, they'd need bottles. lol
Hock - can't handle a reg classroom, and I can only have 12 kids MAX in my room
Hock - true
Hock - oh, and the 1's stand for 1 teacher and 1 aide
Darcy - well, I'll hand it to you. I can't teach spec ed. I tried it and don't have the patience.
Hock - so what are some things you are doing for X-mas crafts?
Darcy - I got it.
Hock - I am going to do 2 neat books with my class...we will make them...one is the 5 sense of X-mas, and the other is an X-mas shape book...they will like these
Darcy - sorry, I keep on getting booted
Hock - I wonder where everyone is?
Hock - I see
Darcy - I am absolutely swimming in holiday ideas from the net and from teacher books.
Darcy - I just don't have the energy to sort it all out.
Hock - HAHA...me too, but what cool ones are you doing?
Hock - I need a few more
Darcy - Had bronchitis over thanksgiving and now I have a bad cold.
Hock - I know how you feel
Hock - yuck
Darcy - gonna put me on the spot, huh?
Hock - well, we are going to make a Santa our of construction paper (2 day affair) to hang
Darcy - Well, I read a good idea on the listserv today.
Hock - let me see...uhm, make a Grinch Santa..
Darcy - Cut out Xmas trees, let kids decorate and then cut them horizontally into 1 inch pieces. Attach a piece of yarn tot he back and voila, a mobile.
Hock - today we used that craft foam and I drew a tree on it...they cut it out and used glitter and other things to decorate it...then I hot glued a string on top for an ornament
Hock - oh that's cool
Hock - we Hanukkah we are going to make potato latkes
Darcy - basically, the same idea.
Hock - I wish I had my plan book so I could see what else we have done cuz we did a lot
kindercop - hi, I'm a K teacher
Hock - hi kcop
Hock - what kinds of things are you doing for x-mas?
Darcy - though. I am the only Jew in my school, including students. Makes me teaching about Hanukkah kind of awkward,
Hock - we painted wreaths out of paper plates to hang,
kindercop - I'm the scrooge of my school, Holiday program tonight and I'm not doing ANYTHING till next week
Hock - Darcy-what's a good book I can get about Hanukkah that they would understand?
Hock - HAHA
kindercop - I do a craft day - have moms come in and help
CoolSixy - hello everyone
kindercop - One thing I do is gingerbread boys/girls - with clothes cut out of wallpaper samples
Hock - oh, Darcy your kids would LOVE this...We used the roll of brown butcher paper, and traced a LARGE gingerbread guy on it...I let them cut it out, then using white and pink paint we painted them...really cool
Darcy - I haven't been able to find a book on the pre-k level. I like The Matzo Ball fairy though for learning about Passover.
Darcy - I am doing gingerbread next week!!!!
Hock - kcop-how big is the pattern?
CoolSixy - I am doing gingerbread next week too
Darcy - I was looking for ideas for g.b. too.
kindercop - I also have kids make "Rudolf" hat - brown strip around head, trace hands for antlers, and a little short brown strip on the front with a red ball for the nose
Hock - Darcy...the gingerbread men are about the same size as the kid...if you fold the paper in half, and then trace half the body...its easier to cut out and do
Darcy - you know what's a good book for reindeer? "Imogene's Antler's"
Hock - K-cop I like that
CoolSixy - Darcy, I have seen a book for the theme of gingerbread
SammiKteacher - I am looking for a simulation and hands-on activity for teaching WWII to my kinders. It is state-mandated, and I am having trouble coming up with ideas.
kindercop - The gingerbread kids are about 8 inches or so. The kids trace from a pattern on brown construction paper and decorate faces with markers
Darcy - Teacher book or trade book, cool?
Hock - thanks kcop
kindercop - SamiK - what state are you in?
SammiKteacher - I'm in the Midwest
Darcy - That's kind of out of my area of expertise, sammi. I teach colors and shapes mostly.
Hock - oh Darcy-we are going to make cinnamon applesauce ornaments
Darcy - I am going to do that!!! Making applesauce ornaments. How much applesauce do you need to make them for a whole class though?
kindercop - Boy, SammiK, I only have to teach some of the core democratic values, and community, past and present, stuff like that
Darcy - Sammi, I suggest doing a WebQuest or tellecollaboration project for that topic. If you need, I can send you some links.
SammiKteacher - HELP!
Hock - at least a cup of cinnamon...but has anyone tried adding other things...like flour to cut back on the cinnamon?? Oh, 1 cup of applesauce...duh me...should have said mix equal parts
kindercop - Another Gingerbread, I've seen on line and might try, is making them out of sandpaper, and rubbing cinnamon (SP?) sticks on to make them smell
Darcy - That's good, because I don't want to buy gallons of applesauce only to have it go to waste.
Hock - oh and Darcy- I am going to have the kids write a wish list to Santa...but what I am going to do, is have them cut out pics from mags instead of writing them
Darcy - cinnamon
kindercop - My K's write their letters to Santa with their 6th grade buddies, and I put a copy of their school pictures on and send to our little local paper
Hock - that's neat kcop
Darcy - cute
Hock - my kids don't have any buddies so I couldn't do that
Darcy - cute
Hock - oh Darcy...for Hanukah, I traced dreidels (sp?) onto paper...the kids will write one letter of their name on each dreidel...cut it out and decorate...then we will make a necklace out of them
Darcy - that is too cute hock!
Darcy - I bet your hands hurt after cutting out that many dreidels!
Hock - has anyone hear tried that blue glass ornament, and you use the kids handprint to make snowman?
kindercop - My K's this year are REALLY into anything with coloring, cutting, and gluing. So, one of the easy ones I heard on a group was - make a plain sheet of white paper into a square, color a one inch boarder along the left and bottom (looks like an L) turn the paper over and roll it up. It should be candy cane striped. Worth a try
Hock - NO way...I make the kids do the cutting...and I just used photo copy paper, and ran off copies
kindercop - Hock, the blue ornament with handprint is on KinderKorner group @ yahoo! - It looks really cute
kindercop - I didn't try it but might - have you?
Hat - kindercop- thanks, I was wondering how it would look!
Hock - I don't understand how to look at the pics...but do they use the whole hand or just 4 fingers
Hat - We always make a Christmas tree with cut outs of the student's hands
Hock - would tempera paint work?
kindercop - Use the whole hand, the palm goes on the bottom and the fingers go up the sides, although probably not far cuz of short, little hands
kindercop - Is it against the rules to talk about other groups?
Hat - no, it's ok to talk about other groups
kindercop - Hock, do you belong to KinderKorner?
Darcy - <---- is trying out the candy cane paper and it's not working right.
Hock - yes I do but I am confused about how to look at the pics
Hock - hat we are going to make wreaths..3 green hands and 3 red, then glue their pic in the middle
Hat - that will be great, Hock. I think I will do the same thing, but with candy canes
kindercop - Darcy - when you flip it over, start at the corner OPPOSITE the corner of the L
Hock - that's neat too
Hat - I am going to risk making gingerbread houses!
Hock - hat that will be fun
Hock - use empty milk cartons, and then use frosting and graham crackers
Hat - yes, that's how we will make them
Hock - what are some things you guys do for Kwanzaa?
Hat - sorry, just wanted to try that face
kindercop - Hock - when you go to "groups.yahoo" then get to the KinderKorner Page, on the LEFT hand side their is a row of options - click on files - or pictures- it should work. Files need to be loaded and depending on your computer, may or pay not work. Pic's are thumbnails - just little pic's that you can make larger
Hat - I haven't done anything for Kwanzaa
Hock - thanks kcop
Darcy - Here's a website with holiday ideas http://www.eagle.ca/~matink/holidays.html
Hat - I'm going to go check out kindercorner. bye!
Hock - well I have to get going...thanks everyone...Darcy I hope you can use some ideas
kindercop - One last message - if you go to yahoo. groups check out my KidWritingK group
Darcy - thanks, Hock, I did!
Darcy - ok, cop.
Hock - kcop-I heard about Kidwriting...good or bad?
KinderCop - Hock - I LOVE IT
