jeri-gr1 - hello! Is everyone a first grade teacher?
Cricket - Hello First grade here
jeri-gr1 - Hello! where are you from?
Cricket - Wisconsin Where are you from?
jeri-gr1 - Connecticut
Cricket - Do you have a reading recovery program
jeri-gr1 - Yes! do you?
Cricket - Yes, I love it. But, it we have a high need this year.
jeri-gr1 - hi lizAz! how are you?
jeri-gr1 - Yes I do too!! Do you do DRA Assessments ?
LisAZ - Hi everyone
Cricket - We developed our own assessments with IRI, CAP, Vocab. Dictation, etc.
LisAZ - doing great...thanks jeri...how are you?
jeri-gr1 - We do CAP in kindergarten. Do you teach Reading recovery?
jeri-gr1 - I 'M DOING OKAY!
Cricket - No, First grade but, I would like to be trained to use in my room.
jeri-gr1 - In connecticut it is an intensive training program. I think that the state is actually thinking about cutting it from the education budget!
Cricket - That is the rumor here. They don't feel that it reaches alot of students.
jeri-gr1 - People need to realize that not all students come to school reading, and that we as teachers cannot force children to read when they aren't ready
Spoiled Cat - Kindergarten teacher here, just wanted to ask a quick question
jeri-gr1 - LisAZ are you a classroom teacher?
jeri-gr1 - hi spoiled cat
Cricket - I agree. Over half of my class has a May-Aug birthday. Mostly, boys and they are just not ready.
jeri-gr1 - what's the question
Spoiled Cat - Hi! What do you all want the kids to know coming into 1st grade
Spoiled Cat - what is really important to you?
LisAZ - Hi Spoiled CAt...yes I teach 1st jeri
jeri-gr1 - 25 high frequency words, all alphabet, beginning sounds, and some ending sounds
jeri-gr1 - Cat where do you live?
Spoiled Cat - Wisconsin
Cricket - Spoiled Cat - Me Too Are you hoping for a snow day?
jeri-gr1 - Then you probably want an answer from CRicket!!! I live in CT, our standards are different Ithink?
Spoiled Cat - always hoping for a snow day!
Spoiled Cat - jeri, you answered good, just wanted to make sure we are focusing on the right things!!! Thanks a bunch!
Cricket - I would agree with Jeri - But, I realize that each child comes in at a different place. I would hope for sounds, 25 freq. words, maybe reading at a RR level 1-3?
jeri-gr1 - Your welcome. I taught k for 2 years, now I am in 1st grade, and I realize the importance for those skills to be in place
jeri-gr1 - Is that Fountas and Pinnell or Clay?
Cricket - Clay but can be easily converted.
jeri-gr1 - I would say Joetta Beaver A, B, 1, 2
LisAZ - how about counting...number recognition
Spoiled Cat - You gals have a good night! Thanks again!
jeri-gr1 - Oh that is a definite to! But depending on the program that can come
Cricket - I tried a new calendar math this year that is working out great.
jeri-gr1 - WE do SAXON!! K-4, Mcgraw hill 5
Cricket - Do you like it? I haven't heard about that one.
LisAZ - I do calendar math too...it sure does add to knowledge base! I also love it for introducing what's coming up.
jeri-gr1 - well, it's okay, somethings are not dev. appro
jeri-gr1 - brb.. baby crying
Cricket - Do you do your own Lisa. What do you focus on? Some people have Monday Money etc.
LisAZ - How do you like Saxon jeri? I am not using at this school I'm at but have in the past. Now I just try to incorporate things I used in Saxon.
Cricket - I like how it builds a number sense in my students. We play a fun game called no more.
jeri-gr1 - I'm back. I think some of saxon is rote memorization
jeri-gr1 - I incorperate math centers into my classroom
jeri-gr1 - Our district put saxon in place 5 years ago to get the district all on the same page. now we are looking to revamp it
jeri-gr1 - Our district put saxon in place 5 years ago to get the district all on the same page. now we are looking to revamp it
Cricket - Are your centers during regular centers or seperate?
jeri-gr1 - I do literacy centers and math centers separate
Cricket - I just get aclamated to guided reading and centers and now they are talking about guided math with centers. I don't have time for Science and SS.
jeri-gr1 - I feel the same way! in CT everything is standards driven.. I miss kindergarten
Cricket - This year I am team teaching with another first grade teacher. Together we seem to have more time and try to hit the SS and Sci in our Literacy centers.
LisAZ - I do my own Cricket...I have time, money, problem of the day, days of week, odd/even number
jeri-gr1 - Thats alot like saxon. I also do math journals and use whiteboards
Cricket - Have you ever done the Month Macarena? by Dr. Jean? It's fun. How do you use your math journals
jeri-gr1 - I havent tried that what is it?
jeri-gr1 - I start in the begining of the year modeling story problems, Then as they gain independence they begin to write their own story problems and have a buddy solve, by drawing a picture and adding a number sentence
Cricket - You use the music and steps from the macarena but you just say the months. I found it at the WI First Grade Conference I went to this year.
Cricket - You can by the CD by Dr. Jean.
jeri-gr1 - interesting!!
jeri-gr1 - how long have you both been teaching???
Cricket - Do you have them write a real-life problem to solve a number sentence. The research I have seen lately. Seems to indicate lots of communication and relating to real life.
jeri-gr1 - Yes! Like I have 5 dimes I used 2 to buy Icecream how much money is left
jeri-gr1 - this servers is so sloooooowwwwww
Cricket - The example I have seen is ..respond to 5 7 = the students then write 5 7=12. I had 5 tootsie rolls and my brother gave me seven now I have 12.
LisAZ - I've been teaching 5 years...We make class books of story problems too using same idea jeri.
Cricket - Hey what happened to the plus mark?
jeri-gr1 - YEs similar... it ran away!!! I was wondering how 57 related to 12. my teacher brain doesn't function well after 10:00
jeri-gr1 - Okay this is just way too slow!!! Are you feeling the same way
Cricket - Do you set benchmarks for your students each quarter? We use Marie Clay levels and set 4 levels each quarter. We test quarterly for report cards. But, I feel like I am pushing them through the reading levels. I want to explore more with fluency and compreh.
Cricket - Yes, this is slow
Cricket - Hi Barb. Where are you from?
jeri-gr1 - We do state DRA assessments 2 times a year, and then are able to use it off season so to speak it , also evaluates fluency and comp.
LisAZ - hi barb...yes this is slow for me too!
barb - I'm trying to find a book that uses student names in literacy related activities. Can anyone give me the title?
Cricket - When you test for fluency do you time it? or do you take two readings one for fluency and one for word accuracy?
barb - I'm trying to find a book that uses student names in literacy related activities. Could anyone give me the title?
LisAZ - hi Meldy
jeri-gr1 - No! Usually informally, I take a fluency running record of familiar text. Formally flunency is calculated by the rubric
jeri-gr1 - Barb, phonics lessons by fountas & Pinnell uses some
Cricket - Sorry Barb, I don't know any
jeri-gr1 - I can give you ideas barb, I do alot of activities with students names int he beginning of the year
Meldy - Hello good evening dear teachers
jeri-gr1 - hi Meldy
barb - I wanted to order this book for my library. I think I'll go to a bookfinder site. Thanks.
Cricket - Did you want Phonemic ideas, Barb, or written recognition with connections?
Meldy - hello Liza, cricket and jeri,
Cricket - Hello Meldy
Meldy - Are you all grade one teachers?
jeri-gr1 - yes
Cricket - Yes,
Meldy - what plae? I used to teach grade one for a year and I missed it......
