Kathleen - This hour is set aside for grade 4 teachers.
Kathleen - Daisi, are you feeling pressured by a lot of testing?
Daisi - Yes! I live in VA where we have to give the state SOL's.
Kathleen - SOL...what does that stand for?
Daisi - Standards of Learning-guidelines set by the state.
Daisi - We give them in the third and fifth at the elementary level.
Kathleen - ah, I see
Daisi - And social studies only in gr. 4.
Kathleen - Well get ready for annual testing, our new pres wants every child tested every year
Kathleen - And teachers will be held accoutable. Not sure how, in what way
Daisi - We are trying Reading Renaissance for the first time this year.
Kathleen - Daisi, are you happy with that? Are you familiar with 4-Blocks Literacy framework?
Daisi - So far I like RR, but I have 27 kids in half a double wide trailer with little space.
Daisi - I do not know about 4 blocks.
Kathleen - LOL calico, well, at least that's a fairly small group. It could be 20 first graders from hades ; o)
Kathleen - oh, Daisi, that's not good
Susie - Ihave 19 4 th graders I'm having a great year
Daisi - I do have a wonderful group of kids this year, which makes teaching tolerable.
Susie - Tell me more about the 4 blocks
Kathleen - I'm no expert about 4-Blocks Literacy, but I recommend you look into it, it fits with just about any reading program, but covers everything students need, is spreading like crazy, is research based, many supporters
Susie - Is there a book you could suggest
Kathleen - I follow the 4-Blocks mailring here at Teachers.Net and everyone who tries it seems to become an enthusiatic supporter
Kathleen - 4-Blocks was created by Pat Cunningham (Classsrooms that Work) and Dottie Hall. Here's their website (and Teachers.Net hosts a mailring and chatboard, articles page, etc): http://www.wfu.edu/~cunningh/fourblocks but also write to me: kathleen@teachers.net for more urls
Susie - A second grade teacher has told me about Pat Cunningham. She really is sold on it, too.
PS - No 4th gr discussion today?
Kathleen - Susie, I don't get paid to promote 4-Blocks, it's just that I hear so much about it, and see so much enthusiasm among teachers who try it
Susie - I'm just into sharing what works well. The more options you have in the teachers bag of tricks the more your able to reach them
Kathleen - Susie, I agree
Kathleen - Teachers.Net has free mailrings for every grade level and for 4-Blocks, many others. You can sign up at http://teachers.net/mailrings
Kathleen - I'll leave now and let the gr. 4 teachers chat. Calico, be sure to e-mail me for 4-Blocks info, Susie too if you wish: kathleen@teachers.net and I'll give you the urls
Susie - Thanks for the info
