Melanie - I do units that are generative topics not taught in the reg classroom.. and you?
Melanie - Hi, Bill.
Bill T 6 NC - Good evening, Melanie.
josi - My units must be extentions of the regular curriculum in some way. Presently I am teaching a PBL unit on acids and bases
Melanie - What kind of resources are good for PBL?
Bill T 6 NC - I teach Science and Social Studies to grade 6. One of my classes is a gifted class.
josi - Usuallly I pick a problem from the newspaper which effects the community and try to develop one from that. It takes about 3 moonths
Melanie - I'm not familiar with how PBL works.
Jen - IDE in Ramsey, NJ has great info on PBL's
Jen - try http://www.idecorp.com
josi - I wish I could type. PBL is problem based learning. The content to be taught is within the problem. Try http://www.imsa.edu/team/cpbl/cpbl.html
Jen - My students have had great success with PBL
josi - Do you teach thinking skills?
Melanie - Yes, integrated thinking skills into units of study
josi - What materials do you use?
Jen - i have a 3-6 grade pull-out program where i create my own curriculum
Melanie - Well, it depends on the unit, but some vendors I like are Prufrock Press, Synergetics and Zephyr
Jen - Sorry! Jersey girl here
Melanie - Jen, what units do you teach?
Jen - Prufrock Press is a great catalog
Melanie - Hi, Jen 4018
josi - Have you used Catch Them Thinking?
Jen - I have done units on inventors, whales, general technology, and much more
Jen - I have not used it
Melanie - No, I haven't... Is that by Robin Fogarty? I've seen it in a catalog.. Do you have and use it?
josi - I am trying to find someone who has used it before I purchase it. I have used Catch Them Thinking and Writing when I taught 8th grade English.
josi - no
jen4018 - sorry no
Melanie - If it's by Robin Fogarty, I'm sure it's good. I have her metacognition book and I used the assessment one, as well.
jen4018 - I don't know if anyone can help me but currently i am student teaching in a first grade classroom, one of my students is working at the fourth grade level, but I have yet to find anything that can keep him occupied
uni - How are you and babes?
Melanie - I was just thinking of you today, when I pulled out the unit plan you sent me.
uni - 4th grade level in everything?
jen4018 - yes
Melanie - We, three are doing well. Babies are getting big, acc. to doc.
jen4018 - and the problem is he has really bad behavior problems
uni - Do youhave no gifted programs in your district?
Melanie - What are the students' interests, Jen4018?
jen4018 - so i am trying to find something that he can do but will really challenge him
uni - Jen that often goes hand in hand with young gifted kidds whose needs are not being met
jen4018 - for first grade all they have i s a half hour once a week for math
jen4018 - I know he is interested in sports
jen4018 - and pokemon and video games
Nikki - Nobody said hi to me !!!!
uni - so he is only gifted for half an hour a week? No, just kidding - he needs to be challenfged every minute. Have you tried reading Teaching Young Gifted Kids in a Regualr Classroom?
Melanie - Nikki, I said
uni - Hello Nikki - you didn't say hi either!
jen4018 - no is that a book?
uni - Yes
Nikki - Thankyou for caring I was there!!!
Melanie - How about a research project involving someone he likes in pro sports?
jen4018 - sounds like a good idea
uni - How about a hobby or collection report
uni - maybe he collects sports cards or memorabilia - gifted kids often are great collectors
jen4018 - ok I can ask him
uni - http://www.prufrock.com/
uni - Jenn at this site is Prufrock Press which offers lots of resources for gifted
uni - It includes Teaching Gifted by Sue Winebrenner and Teaching Young Gifted Kids in a Regular classroom
jen4018 - ok great thanks
Melanie - I just ordered the Assessing CPS book. I really need to work on my assessment
uni - Has Mim been in tonight?
Melanie - Mim has not been here, as yet. : -(
uni - I am working on developing leadership units and more creative problem solving
uni - We are in the midst of our Invention Unit, just completed building Rube Goldberg contraptions and tomorrow the firemen come in the Cherry Picker for the egg drop
Melanie - I love the cherry picker idea.. how cool.
uni - Next year I need new ideas for liniting the egg drop structures and force more creative problem solving -too many arguments over materials this year
Melanie - Do you have an invention convention?
uni - Our local firemen love it I have to take their pictures each year with all the 6th graders
uni - Yes our Invention Convention is March 7
uni - I am going to Indiana gifted conference on March 1 & 2
Melanie - Any big wig keynotes at the conference?
uni - Are you still teaching Melanie
Melanie - I'm still teaching, for at least 3-4 more weeks if I keep doing well.
uni - Carolyn Tomlinson and Bertie Kingore
uni - Carol Ann
Melanie - Wow! I'd love to hear both of them someday. We use Bertie Kingores portfolios for K identification
Melanie - jen4018... still there?
uni - I've never heard Kingore
uni - TOmlinson has been there several tiemes as has Sylvia Rimm
Melanie - We had Jim Delisle last year.. my personal fave.
uni - Yes heard Jim Delisle too
uni - and Jim Fay
Melanie - Uni, Bill was here for a brief time but he left
uni - Anyway Kingore and Tomlinson are the two keynote speakers
Melanie - I've never heard of Jim Fay
uni - Jim Fay talks about discipline
Melanie - Hi, JennRose. What do you teach?
uni - He was mostly there for parents of gifted -- he has some interesting tapes
uni - Hello Jenn ROse
uni - I wish Bill had stayed - he has some wild problems going on all the time
uni - I guess I liked him cause I have gifted teens
uni - Hi Jenn Rose - I teach 6th grade in a self contained gifted magnet program
uni - I meant Jim Fay not Bill
Melanie - I teach K-5 in a pull-out
uni - I think we are alone Melanie!
Melanie - Shucks... I'm disappointed Mim didn't make it. I can only stay about 5 more mins because my 4year old needs a bath and to get to bed
uni - Well my 15 yr old wants the computer for homework so I understand - told her to wait a bit
Mathnerd - hi room
uni - Hello mathnerd!
Melanie - Hi, Mathnerd... cute nick

Mathnerd - is she married?
Mathnerd - joking

Mathnerd - never been there
Mathnerd - too busy lately
Mathnerd - portfolio
Melanie - portfolio for you or for your kids?

Mathnerd - mine, working on my first two entries, Assessment, and Assignment
uni - teacher portfolio?? That is what Indiana is going to
Melanie - We have the portfolios in MO, also
uni - Yes, Melanie I know... remind me of the ones that call me every day
Mathnerd - for National Board Certification

Melanie - Wow.. that's exciting... that seems like tremendous work
uni - Mathnerd you must live in a state where it pays - here nothing
Mathnerd - too much, hoops
Melanie - I was meaning the parents on the GATE chatboard who love to stir up..
Mathnerd - i'm in Redondo Beach CA , uni
