uni - Hello out there GATE world!
MikeS/TN - I am just dropping in for a second to brag about the new program in TN
MikeS/TN - The article is at http://www.tennessean.com/williamsonam/archives/01/03/03262994.shtml
uni - Good to have someone able to brag - in Indiana they just did away with the GT part of the Education Department - we are now under Special Ed
MikeS/TN - I guess I am the mike your are talking about at www.giftedtn.go.to
MikeS/TN - Does indiana get IDEA protections?
uni - Since I don't know what that is, probably not
MikeS/TN - We are fighting in TN against gifted being moved out from special ed because we would lose IDEA, IEPs, FAPE
MikeS/TN - IDEA is Indiv with disabilities act
uni - I am trying to load your page but it is taking its good old time here!
uni - Well we thought we had a pretty good deal here - and I did not have IEPs but I teach in a gifted magnet - so I have a self-contained classroom
MikeS/TN - the article or http://www.giftedtn.go.to
uni - All my usual chatting GATE friends are pregnant or mothers of newborns and they don't show up to chat very often
Anne - It's still early
uni - Are you also a GATE teacher Anne?
Anne - Yes, they're getting the little ones to bed
Anne - Yes, I'm a resource room teacher for grades 2-5
uni - I am in Indiana and teach in a magnet program
Anne - All-day pull-out weekly
uni - So how often do you have the same kids?
Anne - uni - I meet weekly with each group of 12 0r 13 for the day.
uni - Are you a GT teacher and where are you located?
uni - How does that work for you? And does that mean you have a different grade level each day? Please do? I am 50 mi south of Indy
Anne - It is crazy but stimulating. I have a different unit going for each grade level 2 thru 5. Each day I have a different grade level. On Fridays, I meet with 2nd grade in the morning and 5th gtrade in the afternoon. Whew!
uni - Well I teach 6th grade and my students are reading at college-adult level - we read literature books, have discussions, write responses or develop products.
uni - And I have the same group all day long except when we regroup for math
Anne - That sounds great....Great Books program?
Indyannie - So when you come to a new genre you must do the GR
Indyannie - Discussions get pretty deep, I'll bet
uni - Im math I teach 7th and 8th grade levels (Pre-Algebra) and I have two 5th grade boys taking Algebra
Anne - Wow! Very intense preparations for you!
uni - Yes very deep. No, although I have been trained for Great Books and use a lot of those techniques. I pick lit sets based on social studies integration - have four or five at a time.
uni - Yes I work all the time!
uni - Especially as my strenghts are in Social Studies, English and Art!
uni - obviously NOT in spelling
uni - But I teach in Integrated units so I can appreciate your time spent, too, Anne
uni - What kinds of topics are you covering?
Anne - Yes, there is soooo much material using social studies. What about nonfiction? Did you read Nonfiction Matters?
uni - Yes, we read non-fiction. Right now some are reading CRY OF THE KALAHARI about Africa
Anne - Topics - 2nd grade: insects, ants and bees in depth.3rd grade: Inventions.4th grade-the Scientific Method with a Science Fair.5th grade Toastmasters
uni - My brain is a bit numb as I am on Spring Break and can't think of what my reading lists include - also a lot of classics
uni - Wow - what do you do for toastmasters?
uni - It looks like heavy duty science except for 5th???
Anne - My brain is numb due to fatigue. Looking forward to Spring Break in a couple of weeks. I also have a teenage son. He keeps looking over his shoulder, asking when I will be finished.
uni - Are you expected to tie to the curriculum or can you pick anything and do any kind of enrichment
uni - I have three teens so I understand
uni - One is away, one is watching a movie and the other is with her friend
uni - Usually I am not permitted to have the internet so long!
uni - Whoops gotta go too
