Kathleen - This is a meeting on the topic, "Job Hinting Tips" for those applying and interviewing for teaching positions
Deb/WI - Hi everyone! I'm to be your moderator for tonight, but I am stuck at school right now so I'll try to answer as many things as I can.
Deb/WI - So how's everyone doing at the end of the year? I'm ready for a break :o)
Kurt/CA - Well its been interesting,
smj - I teach part time so its not too bad. I really could keep going.
Deb/WI - I suppose I should give you some background. I'm a new administrator who's been coming to TNet for over a year now.
Deb/WI - The reason I am at school is because of 5th grade graduation and I forgot.
Debbie - What do you think about bring a portfolio with you to your interview?
smj - I can't seem to overcome being so nervous at interviews that I can't concentrate on my answers
Kurt/CA - I decided this year to try the scattershot approach to applying, apply everywhere for anything I'm qualified for
Deb/WI - Portfolios are nice especially if you can use it to show what you did in an interview. Most admin may ask you to leave them and others don't even take the time to look at them.
Deb/WI - What do you think makes you the most nervous smj?
Debbie - I use them to help me get over being nervous...it helps to fill in the blanks.
Kurt/CA - I think everyone is nervous at interviews, I usually tell them that up front
Kathleen - Deb, thanks for doing this tonight. John and Keith are planning to be here too.
smj - Having 3 or 4 admin. all staring at you waiting for you give them the answer they want
smj - good idea kurt - I'll try that next time
Kurt/CA - I just try to be honest, you only know what you know, no sense trying to guess what they expect
Deb/WI - Smj just focus on the person who's asking you the question. That always helps. Take a deep breath and there's nothing wrong with thinking before you answer.
John - Is there a perfect number of resume pages ?
smj - I am too quick to answer without thinking but my nervousness makes me do that
Kurt/CA - Usually 1 I think,
Deb/WI - I was just telling Kat that I may get booted because our district is having server problems. If I disappear it's not because of you guys.
Kathleen - I walked into an interview once expecting to meet with the principal, but there were about 10 people, the school was a lab for the local teachers college, so the admins and profs were there/. I blew that one, so nervous!
smj - I do have a portfolio and I always ask them if they want to see it.
lorip123 - Deb, did you have a lot of interviews before you got your administrative job?
Deb/WI - I try to keep mine to 2 John. As I've gone up into admin though I find I need more info.
Deb/WI - Hi Leeza! Yes I did and we have a lot of openings this year due to retirements.
Kathleen - Rocky Road! Everyone, here is another school administrator who agreed to field questions for the hour. Thanks, Rocky!
Rocky Road - well hi all
smj - A question I get a lot is Where do you want to be in 5 years. and I always say that I want to be a better teacher then I was 5 years earlier
Kurt/CA - I started early, but I haven't heard anything, either positive or negative, which is rather odd
Rocky Road - I was going to use my real name of John but already saw a John
Rocky Road - just letting everyone know I am K-5 Admin
smj - Rocky Road - What do you think is the most important quality of a K-5 teacher
Rocky Road - sense of humor and honesty
Rocky Road - when I interview I look for humor. Someone who can give and take a joke where appropriate
Rocky Road - in teaching you need that quality
lorip123 - Rocky, how do I "portray sense of humor and honesty on the resume so that you will want to interview me?
Rocky Road - you can't really but in the face to face you need to bring that out
lorip123 - So what catches your eye in a resume?
smj - In NJ they can get up to 700 applications for 2 jobs. How can I get mine to stand out among the rest
Rocky Road - I look mainy at the cover letter first for my impression
smj - do you look for anything specific
Rocky Road - read the ad and respond to what they are looking for in your cover letter.
Rocky Road - sell yourself there
Rocky Road - bug them till you get an interview
Rocky Road - then sell yourself
lorip123 - What's the best way to bug them?
Rocky Road - calls
Rocky Road - speak to the prin not the secretary
lorip123 - How many calls are reasonable?
Rocky Road - I would say until they tell you the postion is filled
smj - spaced how far apart
Rocky Road - once a week would be ok for an advertised postion
Kathleen - Deb/WI is having server problems, so might not be able to get back on here.
Rocky Road - stop if they say you are not being considered but ask why for future reference
Kurt/CA - does the same apply for district level applications ?
smj - when you call do you just ask if the positionis filled to try to tell them more about yourself
Rocky Road - Kurt sure
Rocky Road - I would not ask first just try to talk to them and make a good impression
Kurt/CA - the reason I ask, most district applications don't refer to the specific hiring school
MnM - Are there any helpful phrases or questions that could actually get the secretary to let you speak to the principal?
Rocky Road - but you could call the supers office and find out where the openings are
Kurt/CA - true
Rocky Road - MM be persistent with the secretary eventually they will let you through
Rocky Road - and persistence pays a lot for you
MnM - For education positions, about how long are resumes on average?
Rocky Road - I don't like one that is more than 2 pages
Rocky Road - have up to date references
Rocky Road - anything over 3 years I really don't feel like reading
Kathleen - Hi, Keith! Keith is a Director of Human Relations in Maryland, and is assisting tonight. Thank you, Keith!
andie - Hi there! I need some insight on cover letters
Rocky Road - Who are the admins here tonight?
MnM - That's good to know.
Rocky Road - me K-5
andie - I can't get started I have every book you can imagine but don't know what will get the needed attention
MnM - Rocky Road - Would you want to see a complete list of places taught or just the three years worth?
Rocky Road - the complete list for me
smj - someone told me to mention education authors I've read
andie - smj, are you referring to cover letters?
Rocky Road - and respond to what the ad wants and is looking for in yur cover letter tell them why you should have the job
Kathleen - Keith, can you think of one or more vital pieces of advice you would like to post for anyone applying or interviewing for a teaching position?
Keith - always put down all of your experiences. we look also what you do outside of grades - tutoring kids on campus, clubs, sports, etc.
smj - yes
KW - Keith, I have sent out my resumes to 10 or so schools. i called our job line and one of the schools supposedly has a position for 3rd grade. When I called the school they said they had no such position. It is still posted on the job line!! This is very frustrating since this is the ideal school and it is 5 minutes from my house. When should I make follow-up calls to the others?
Rocky Road - I agree with Keith
andie - I am not responding to a specific add just a posting on the net
MnM - What kind of info would you like to see for each school?
Kurt/CA - Sometimes that happens, I applied for a job and due to reshuffling of the staff the opening closed up
D.E. Wurth - Is there anyone looking for an elementary job in Illinois?
andie - I will be relocating,,, so do I start of with that in my letter?
Rocky Road - I like to see the years and grades
judith - how do I get into the room where they are talking about getting a job
Keith - the best applicants are well rounded and teachable - don't worry about knowing everything - be open and willing to express yourself about taking classes - etc
Jen - When is it appropriate to ask about salaries?
Rocky Road - andie yes
Dodie - I had a position that was called "temporary". It was not renewed. Still looking 2 years later. How do I respond to the inevitable question WHY?
Rocky Road - In my district the super handles that after I sent the applicant to him
Keith - andie- yes and give a call to the HR offices in the surrounding school districts - get on the net and look for them - are they town districts, regional or county
D.E. Wurth - I had my first elementary job this week, but they chose another candidate. I hope and pray that I find a teaching position for the fall.
andie - Do I then just say why they would want me in their school district? Emphasizing my experience, willingness to try things, etc?
Keith - dodie - that is ok - use your experience and be honest with the HR people that it was temp
Rocky Road - dodie the expalnation is the word tremporary!
Keith - andie- tell them you are inquiring about district - you have a certificate and would like to apply
KW - I keep hearing from fellow colleagues that I will have a job in the fall. I don't want to be hired after school starts (like my county does) and have to set my room up in a day! where should I begin?
Jen - anyone who is looking for a job, the Houston area is full of opportunities. My husband and I moved here three years ago, and they're still begging for teachers.
joanne - Question, what states are the administrators from that are here tonight?
kat>^..^< - What do I do if I want to switch from high school special education to elementary regular ed?
Dodie - Rocky Road - now here's the clincher. The Union went to bat for me, and now I'm afraid that it's why I'm being overlooked. Do you think that's the case?
andie - well thats the problem... I am moving to CA and do not have a certificate there
Keith - kat - are you certifficated - if so go for it
Teresa - I have 7 years experience, excellent references, high Gpa, masters work, been published, serve on state committees and can not get an inbterview..any suggestions?
Rocky Road - Dodie it could be unions are powerful! I do belive in them though even as an adminstrator
Kathleen - Joanne, New Hampshire and Maryland
John - I am an alt high teacher in Mich. any regular contract positions ?
Dodie - Yes - thank heavens for their help when needed.
Keith - andie - most certificates are accepted in other states
joanne - Thanks, Kathleen!
Marc - Teresa, you have to network to find a job
Kathleen - John, you can post directly to the screen, but I'll submit that last question for you: - are alternative teachers "looked" at differently
Rocky Road - I agree dodie
Keith - i am from Md. - southern Md.
joanne - I'm looking for a Music job in Denver...........
Kathleen - - are alternative teachers "looked" at differently
andie - NOT CA!! It is amazing how difficult it is to get totally certified there
Keith - Teresa - don't know why - sounds good to me
KW - I keep getting th run-around from my county. where should I begin?
andie - What makes a cover letter stand out?
Rocky Road - alternative certification program teachers? Is that waht you mean?
Jen - andie, they don't have a temporary license available?
Kathleen - John, what do you mean by "alternative" teacher?
MnM - For the admin. out there - What was the most memorable aspect of any resume you've received?
Keith - andie - no big deal on the cover letter - tell them what you are looking for and when available. I don't like all the cute stuff - what do you teach 1st
D.E. Wurth - If anyone has any knowledge of job openings in central illinois, let me know.
Kathleen - Rocky and Keith, is there any hope for teachers with lots of experience? (translate: up there on the salary schedule)??
andie - My understanding is that you can get an emergency certificate but you also have to take the CBEST which is a test for teachers
Rocky Road - to me I go with the bigest possible sometimes we are tied to a salary figure but we can work around that too for the right person
Keith - kathleen - we are always looking for experienced people and pay all years. No - cheap is not always better
Jen - andie, can you take the test after you're hired?
John - teaching students who drop out due to problems; drugs, attendance, ability etc....
Maggie1NC - does anyone have any advice for those of us who would like a job in the educ. field but not in the classroom?
andie - I am not sure about that
Marcia - I took the CBEST in Dec. and am hoping to get a job this fall in northern Ca.
Kathleen - Check out the Jobs Center here at Teachers.Net. Look for a job by region, post jobs, talk about jobs, be notified when jobs are posted: http://teachers.net/jobs
John - keith where are u from ?
Kathleen - Keith, does Maryland accept Conn. certification?
Jen - in Texas, we got a temp one year certificate and took all the certification tests during our first year of teaching.
Kathleen - Keith is from southern Maryland
Rocky Road - andi stay away from phrasaes like I love children and really want to teach and watch them grow. to me that is too cute
Keith - Charles County Maryland
Marc - Maggie- Check out substituting as a first way to get known, then try to work your way into the system
Keith - I think Conn is a recipracal state with Md.
LAURI/HS math - marcia, what's the cbest test?
MnM - Is there any "rule" about paying for experience? I thought that might be an issue the last time I was hired, however there were so many applicants that they simply didn't pay for my years of experience.
andie - Thank you Rocky Road and Keith
Kathleen - Maggie, specialize with courses toward reading cert, spec ed, remedial
John - Jen does texas give yrs of experience ?
KW - When following up on a job, what is the best way to approach the principal?
Maggie1NC - Marc, I am already in the system and am teaching but am ready to get out of the classroom and do something different.
Kurt/CA - I think it depends on the district
Jen - John, do you mean salary steps?
Keith - Durrently Md. graduates about 2500 teachers and we need over 7000 each year. There is a lot of opportunity in Md.
Rocky Road - MM life experiences can help too.. Negotiate your salary if you can
John - I have 10 yrs as a noncontract teacher, where could I be on the pay step ?
Keith - Maggie - get into leadership positions and prove yourself - teamleader - workshops etc
teacher245 - Keith-What's the best newspaper to locate job opportunities in?
Jen - To my understanding, you would be on the 10th step.
andie - One more thing about the Cover letter.. do you need to toot your own horn or just state the facts.
John - do u know the pay ?
teacher245 - Keith-I'm from NJ--MD is not too far away
MnM - I'm in the process of moving and where I'm going, they don't have a 1 year temp. certificate. That would be nice, though.
Keith - I would go to the net - and look up teachers jobs - we have our own net page where you can send a resume on line
Rocky Road - and toot a little but dont be too cute
Kurt/CA - I think my masters kept me from getting a job last year, I was too expensive
Jen - varies from district to district--state minimum is $21,000, but my district pays $27,000. Our steps average $500 each.
Keith - teacher245- no - we hire many from NJ
teacher245 - what's the address?
andie - I think I steer away from cute as a rule
LAURI/HS math - Keith, where's this web page?
Rach - Maggie - what county are you in?
andie - Kurt where do you live in CA
Rocky Road - JRMS what is your first name?
Maggie1NC - Forsyth Co, Rach.
Kurt/CA - In northern cal
Keith - Charles county public schools PO box D LaPlata , Md. 20646 att; HR
john - Keith, how much Knowledge of MSPAP should I have for a MD interview?
Keith - look up Charles County Public Schools - Maryland http://www.ccboe.com/
MnM - Since technology is a great addition to any candidate, would admin. rather receive credential packets via mail or anything by e-mail?
Rocky Road - I prefer real mail
kat>^..^< - I'm not certified in elementary ed but was wanting to get in on a t-certificate and work on certification.
Jen - to the administrators--i'm looking to move back to Iowa from Texas in a couple of years. Any tips for making my experience in Texas stand out?
D.E.Wurth - If you are nervous during an interview, will that hinder you from getting a job?
Rocky Road - Jen make sure its on yur resumea nd ghave up to date references
Sue - What would be looked at more, substituting or having your own classroom? I'm now looking for a public school position after 2 years of having my own class. Do you think I have a better chance now?
Keith - john - I would find out some - basic info on Mspap - goals- of it etc. your teaching background - 4 block reading - writing - coop learing - very important
LAURI/HS math - What's the best way to prepare for an interview???
andie - How important are portfolios
Teresa - What do you look for in portfolios?
Rocky Road - DE everyone is nervous at first and we know that too
Rach - I have a coworker that came from Winston Salem
Rocky Road - anie I like to see them
LAURI/HS math - What does everyone have in their portfolio?
Rach - Wake County, NC is always needing teachers! Soooo many new schools..
andie - Keith do you know if 4 blocks is hot every where or just on the East coast?
Rocky Road - lauri reseach the town and school check them out on the net etc.
Maggie1NC - really, that is where i teach, Rach. Where are you?
kat>^..^< - What exactly makes a real good impression at interviews?
andie - RR What should be in them
Kathleen - Welcome, everyone, to a session on Job Hunting Tips with John "Rocky Road", school principal from New Hampshire AND Keith, Director of Human Resources for a county in Maryland
Keith - portfolios should not be pushed on the interviewer - ask politely if they would like to see it - if not sell yourself on your classroom knowledge
Jen - My husband teaches 4 blocks near Houston
LAURI/HS math - Thanks Rocky Road!
teacher245 - rach-does wake county have a web site?
Laurie - In my portfolio, I have a lot of information from my student teaching experience. Now that I have had a classroom for a year, should I take all that out?
Maggie1NC - Where is Wake Co. , Rach. I have only lived in this area for 2 years.
Keith - tell the inter. what you accomplished with the students and relate real exper.
D.E.Wurth - The team I interviewed in front of didn't even ask to see my portfolio
Rach - Yes - let me get it for you - jobline updated every Tues & Thurs.
andie - Laurie my portfolio is the same way
MnM - How much should "jargon", educ. topics and the like be represented in your materials? I found I this year that we were implementing much of 4-block, but no one called it that.
Rocky Road - laurie yes weed some out
Dodie - I have only one portfolio; should I take it along or provide copies of it to the various schools?
Rach - Raleigh is center of Wake Co http://www.wcpss.net/HumanResources/hrjobs.html
Kathleen - E-mail kat@teachers.net with suggestions for future sessions.
john - rach, what's the cost of living like in wake?
Sue - Mine is too, Laurie
Rocky Road - be assertive and show them DE
Keith - DE - so what - you can doll up the portfolio -
Rocky Road - take it along
D.E.Wurth - I have a table of contents, my resume, letters of recommendation, educational philosophy, and examples of reading research since that's my interest
Marcia - Rocky- how do pricipals feel about teachers who have taught at private schools, but not public? Do they consider the experience the same?
andie - Dodie what is in your portfolio?
D.E.Wurth - I am also going to include sample lesson plans
Keith - then tell them the reading approaches you used to get kids to read
LAURI/HS math - Laurie, what things from student teaching do you have in your portfolio?
Laurie - after a 15 minute screening interview, how important is it that I send thank yous to all the principals?
Rocky Road - I do Marcia in fact I started a private school and know how differnt it is
Jen - Rocky or Keith, how do you feel about teachers with bilingual experience? I have three years.
Kathleen - Rocky and Keith, do you have anything to say about how important the appearance of the resume is? And spelling, grammar?
teacher245 - Rocky-when interviewing, do principals want to see evaluations? They are so standard and don't reflect true accomplishments
Rach - Wake Co has the best pay (supplement) in NC
Kurt/CA - I would think spelling in the age of computers is a must
Keith - Jen - good - especially depends in what area you are going in the usa etc.
Kathleen - E-mail kat@teachers.net if you are willing to moderate a future session
Rocky Road - Jen it is a plus even if the sachool is English speaking.. Think of the extra stuff you can do with the languages for enrichment
Laurie - Lauri - I have two complete units, one for second grade and one from fifth. In my class this year, I'm just not writing the same kind of lesson plans, so I'm not sure how to put that in. I have lots of pictures of the kids working in groups, centers, etc.
Teresa - How much sampling of students work should be included in a portfolio?
Maggie1NC - Sounds good Rach. How much is the supplement for a teacher with 11 years experience and a Master's.
Marcia - II have taught pre-k for 25 years. A private school gave me the chance to teach a 1/2 class. That inspired me to work toward the california emergency credential. I was wondering what reception I would get from principals.
Keith - Kathlleen - very important - no mistakes
Rocky Road - teaher it doesn't hurt ot have them in a portfolio
john - I recently sent Wake an app. is it a good place to be a teacher(first year?)
Jen - Since my husband and I are both elementary teachers, how do we bring that up in a letter/resume?
Dodie - Andie - letters of reference, transcripts, my "mission statement", resume, sample lesson (printed screens from PowerPoint), etc.
Sue - Is there such a thing as "over-preparing" for an interview? I think I have done this last year.
Rach - That's about what I make - $36000 I think (terrible that I don't know exactly!) Are you originally from up north?
andie - should you put in pictures of the students engaged, etc?
Kathleen - Rocky and Keith, is there anything that absolutely turns you off to an applicant 1) on paper 2) in person?
Keith - Jen - tell them that you are - many of us like to see that because it bring stability to couple moving to area
Rocky Road - Sue just be yourself in an interview.
Rocky Road - turn offs = one who complains about their present job
kitty - I am interviewing for an ass't princ. position--what advice can you share?
Rocky Road - andie yes
Maggie1NC - No, Rach. From Alabama
Keith - when the applicant thinks they are better than the school district they are inter. in -
Sue - Thank you. It's nice to hear coming from an admin.!
Rach - Turn off when I interview - thinking you know it all with all the right lingo but no experience!
Rocky Road - on who does not have a sense of humor is a turn off
andie - I have not taken that many pictures... time to start!!
Keith - yes. don't knock the job
Rocky Road - one who is not dressed for an interview
andie - What else do you like to see in portfolios?
Rocky Road - Good point Rach
Rach - Just wondering - NY requires Masters
Kathleen - Ah, talk about dress for an interview Keith and Rocky
LAURI/HS math - Lauri, I sent thank you notes (last year) after each screening interview....I think it helps them to remember who you are....especially if you reiterate something that was said during the interview. I always ask a non-ed.question at the end...something that they'll remember me by. for example, one man had a Mr. Potato Head on his shelf...out of curiosity, I asked who gave it to him. (o: Then, in my thank you note, I mentioned how I thought it was cute that such-and-such gave it to him....
Maggie1NC - Rach, are you an Administrator?
Jen - what is the biggest selling point in an interview?
Rocky Road - andie when you show your portrfolio be excited about it
Laurie - andie-my kids keep asking why I take so many pictures...I'm not sure what to tell them. :^)
Keith - vp -job - know the workings of the school level - what you can give to the position etc.
Rach - No- grade chair who interviews candidates at times - might be adm. someday after my son finally goes to Kdg! (No more day care bills) lol
Keith - dress neat and clean - we know that many kids out of college can't afford a designer suit, etc.
Kathleen - Keith and Rocky, does a nervous interviewee concern you alot, or do you accept that as natural?
Dodie - Re: thank you letters. Many times the decision will be made within a few hours of the end of interviews. What to do? Is it okay to fax?
andie - I showed it at the screening interview for the job I have now but getting it up to date is going to take forever I am not sure I can do it in time!
Maggie1NC - Do you have any inside infor on jobs in your county as I have found it is who you know and not what you know that gets the job sometimes.
KB - What about T-certificate teachers...is that a mark against us before we even try?
Rocky Road - natural for me but I hope to set them at ease quickly
Keith - nervous - we try to work around that and joke etc. have them relax and have some fun during talk
Rach - Just FYI - I once interviewed for the second time with a district where there were 8 at a conference table and the 3 final candidates - you had to tell why you were better than the other 2 with them there!! That was soooo stupid!
Kurt/CA - I've always wondered, once a person is interviewed, how long it generally takes to be notified ?
Laurie - I am going to be called for in interview that requires a lesson to be taught. what pointers can you give?
Rocky Road - Rach really I agree with you
andie - Rach- THat sounds like the dating game
Rach - There are so many jobs if you're willihng to live anywhere within the county. What grade level? We need a fifth grade teacher
Rocky Road - Kurt ask in the interview
Anetski - What can a person do when they find out that they may have a less than flattering reference from one former principal?
Maggie1NC - I'd hate that Rach.
Jen - how do I ask a current principal for a reference?
Rach - Do you mean the interview or fifth grade??
Kathleen - Wow, seems that asking a candidate to teach a lesson tests something other than teaching ability: abililty to teach under extreme and unnatural stress!
Kurt/CA - Bummer, it escaped my mind at the time
Maggie1NC - I am certified K-6.
Sheila - My question too, Jen
Keith - be truthful with the inter. - you can admitt that it was a tough year. you will have to try to sell yourself
Rocky Road - Anestski don't use it! but make sure you have others
Maggie1NC - experience in 1st and K
Anetski - Thanks Keith
Laurie - Kathleen, it is a common practice in new york and michigan
Rach - Laurie - I would integrate as much as possible and prepare the lesson for a variety of learning styles - what do you think adm out there??
Anetski - Rocky--can I just leave out a year of teaching on my application?
MnM - Since most applications ask for super. and princ. from last two positions, should they also be the four references or could the references be different? Would you want to see a variety of references? ie different positions, gender, etc.
KB - During the interview (or before) how do principals view teachers that are not yet CERTIFIED but are working on a T-certificate?
Keith - Rach - that is a poor way to interview- especially with the amount of people - I would do my best and if you don't get it - they didn't by not treating the canidate fairly
Rocky Road - anetshi no don't leave it out. I ask where the year went
Rach - NC will hire you if you can be certified within that year (like taking NTEs) but very base pay
Keith - KB - depends on the district - if they can get certified teachers they will probably hire them first
Kurt/CA - I always get the proverbial "do you have any questions" are there any questions that should or should not be asked during the interview ?
Anetski - Then how do I skip the reference?
Dodie - Any suggestions on my ? about follow up via fax if time is of the essence?
Rach - I agree but if they ask for it - that 's my advice
Rocky Road - I agree with Keith I go with certified first
Jen - How do I ask a current principal for a reference?
lvan/CT - KB - We don't even give an interview if a candidate doesn't have the credentials.
Maggie1NC - That is true Rach. I had to take the Nte after being a tenured teacher and holding a valid Ala teaching certificate. It was tough.
Kurt/CA - I told them I was trying to update my portfolio
Rocky Road - Jen can you trust him or her to respect your need to leave
john - Keith, what is the need for ElEd. teachers in your district presently?
Keith - Jen - you must be honest if you are going to look for another job - tell the principal and ask for a reference - we accept the latest evaluation also
andie - What should be in a portfolio?
teacher245 - I have permanent K-8 certification in NJ-is this acceptable is all states?
lvan/CT - Jen - I wouldn't ask for one unless I was a finalist for job I really wanted.
Anetski - Kathleen--please tell us where Rocky and Keith are from. Thanks.
Rach - Me too! 10 years of teaching & permanantly certified in NY and then my ability to teach here in NC was based on one test or I would lose my job - totally unfair!
Laurie - i have been told by other teachers that my principal gives bad references to even teh best of teachers. what do I do?
Rocky Road - NH for me
Kathleen - Rocky-New Hampshire; Keith, southern Maryland
Keith - good need - expecially if you have a minor in spec. ed
Keith - 245- yes in MD
Jen - Thanks Keith and Rocky--you've been a big help.
Sheila - How do you feel about people sending their resumes/cover letters when the district hasn't even advertised an opening?
Maggie1NC - NC has reciprocity with some states but still requrire the NTE and their certification.
Rocky Road - Sheila I send them to the supers office to be filed
Keith - Laurie - then use your evaluations
Rach - Gotta run - anyone interested in teaching in NC - Wake Co - email me at Rachinnc@aol.com - gotta love the weather!
Maggie1NC - I know what you mean Rach.
Linda - Jen. It depends on how well you know your administrator. Our former principal was a great gal and knew to offer when I was out looking for something else. Our current top dog is a hatchet man sent in by the district. I wouldn't ask him for a postage stamp.
Keith - shiela - send it - we keep them on file - you never know
Laurie - Keith - do you mean evaluations that he has done on me?
lvan/CT - Sheila - In our district we like it. We keep them on file for possible openings later.
Kathleen - Rocky and Keith, do your states require NTE or any other teacher tests?
Rach - The selling point for me in NC was they honor private school teaching which NY never would - for step pay
Keith - yes - nte- after july - praxis
Rocky Road - tests for new teadhers entering the state
LAURI/HS math - Should first year teachers apply for interim positions, or just go after full time positions?
KB - Is there anyone on this board that hires 665 teachers?
Maggie1NC - I got my step pay too, Rach.
Rocky Road - the Praxis
Linda - What are the bilingual teacher possibilities out there?
andie - Rocky and Keith what should be in a portfolio?
Kathleen - Rocky, by 'new' do you mean new to NH or new to the profession?
Keith - linda - good - you probably could be and ESOL teacher also
Kathleen - KB, what are '665 teachers"?
Dodie - Rocky Road and Keith: Sometimes the decision will be made after the final interviewee leaves. There's not enough time to snail mail a thank you letter. Is it okay to fax? Or should it be eliminated for that particular position and be general thanks in case I don't get the job?
Rocky Road - sample plans units pictures letters from parents newpaper clippings
teacher245 - how hard are the nte's? I got my certification 25 yrs ago. Hate tests!
Rocky Road - Both Kathleen
Keith - andie - your experiences - grades - certification - resume- references
Sheila - I just moved to CT and have a RI certificate. Is it okay to send that and let them know that CT cert. is in the process?
Rocky Road - dodie play it by ear or give a personal call of thanks
Kathleen - Rocky and Keith, do you have the authority to hire even if a candidate doesn't pass the "required" test/s?
Linda - Yes, I have taught ELD and love it. My MA is in second language development and I am bilingual-bilterate in Spanish.
Rocky Road - sheila yes
Keith - Dodie - e-mail the thank you or drop it off in the Post office after you walk out
andie - Does anyone have a sample of a cover letter they would be willing to share via email
KB - Oh, I was hired on a 665 which meant that I have a college degree--just not in education. I then passed all three parts of the NTE this year so I'm on a T-certificate which is a little higher status than a 665. Our state is very short on teachers and will hire teachers that way.
Dodie - Thank you, Rocky Road. BTW - your name is making me hungry for some ice cream :-)
Maggie1NC - Rocky, What if you had a bad experience with a former principal bec of personality conflicts? Will it hurt you chances at getting another job?
andie - KB what state?
LAURI/HS math - Keith/RR ~ should first year teachers only go after full time positions and NOT interim positions?
Rocky Road - kathleen yes but it is pending certifiaction or passing the test
KB - andie -- Louisiana
lvan/CT - That wouldn't happen in our district, Kathleen - if you don't pass the tests, you don't get the certification and you don't get the job.
Keith - lauri - it can be a foot in the door
Rocky Road - Maggie it could but be upfront as to why you had the probs
Linda - KB - What state is that?
KB - Linda -- Louisiana
Keith - if anyone wants to look at our county - look us up at www.ccboe.com - we will be hiring about 150 teachers this year
LAURI/HS math - Where can I find a sample of a cover letter on the internet?
Maggie1NC - i have never had probs until this year and this is a new school with a new principal who came in with her own groupies. Sshe hired me late and doesn't like outsiders. I am afraid to ask for a reference from her, Rocky.
teacher245 - When moving to a new state-What's the best way to start job hunting for teaching jobs?
Keith - lauri - just a simple - you are interested and what you are certified in - ask for application - when available - thats all
Rocky Road - Maggie then don't ask for one
Sheila - Ivan, are you an admin. in CT?
andie - Lauri I am having a terrible time finding samples of cover letters. I have cover letter books but none have anything about teaching except career change
Kurt/CA - Depends on the state,
Maggie1NC - How can I explain it in an application and interview.
Rocky Road - many amplicants will not have a refernce from the present admin but teacher refernces can help too.
Maggie1NC - That was for you Rocky.
lvan/CT - Sheila - I am a teacher - leader in CT. Have admin. certification and am involved in all hiring decisions at my school.
Anetski - Rocky--do you mean having references from other teachers can help???
Keith - 245 - go to the state and look up school systems on the net and look at the home pages
teacher245 - thanks kathleen-any other sources of investingating when in a new town?
Kathleen - Rocky and Keith, how much weight do you give to letters of rec from parents of students?
LAURI/HS math - andie ~ I'm not very good at surfing the net...and am not an English major. (o:
Sheila - Okay, I just moved to the Norwich area.
Rocky Road - maggie just be honest
Rocky Road - yes aneski
Keith - not that much - administrators more
Maggie1NC - Well that is good to know Rocky because other teachers have probs with this principal too and know the type of job I do in the classroom.
Rocky Road - letter from parents are good ones if a parent trakes the time to write just because I love to see those
Sue - Hello, everyone, A quick question, I'm interviewing for a position in a neighboring school system, I currently have a job but am seeking a change, My question is my daughter is having hip surgery in the fall and I will have to miss about two weeks of school. Should I mention this at my interview??? My gut feeling is yes but many of my coworker say no. Feedback???
MnM - Someone may already have mentioned this, but I wanted to make sure I understood correctly. If no state certificate, don't send in credential packet; especially if it's for a position that wasn't advertised? I never know whether just sending in my info will be good or not.
Rocky Road - Keith the first time we disagreed lol
Maggie1NC - Do principals in general realize that sometimes their can be conflicts in past jobs.
Anetski - Thanks a lot Rocky and Keith, from San Diego! You've both been very helpful. Bye
Rocky Road - sue be upfront and honest
LAURI/HS math - Rocky Road ~ What does one say when their sooo nervous, they can't come up with an answer to a question? For me, interviews are like taking exams....I get very nervous.
Keith - interview and get the job- then talk to the principal when the time comes - make sure you read the contract
Rocky Road - Maggie yes we all have them
Rocky Road - Lauri it is ok to pause think time is good
Keith - Rock - the only thing that bothers me - even a poor teacher can find one parent that loves them
Maggie1NC - Thanks Rocky for the encouragement. it has been a bad year for me.
Sue - Thanks for the advice. I really want this job
Rocky Road - you are right Keith
Rocky Road - good luck maggie
lvan/CT - Laurie - One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was to take the time to formulate your answer before you begin.
Keith - sue - don't hurt your chances - they are not allowed to discriminate for this anyway - talk with the right people at the right time
Rocky Road - great advice Ivan
Maggie1NC - Good Ivan.
LAURI/HS math - Thanks Ivan/CT.
KB - Do most principals ask for tentative discipline plans in interviews?
Sheila - Is a pause okay after a question is asked or is it a red flag to the administrators?
teach - hi everyone, quick question--how do you decide whether to leave or stay at a job
Rocky Road - I like to have or hear the pause
Luv2tch - In college we had to make student teaching portfolios. Is something like that still necessary when working in the field and looking for a new job?
Rocky Road - KB I do
Keith - kb- I haven't been in an interview where dicipline hasn't come up in 25 years - have a plan in your mind
andie - I feel very prepared to interview how do I get an interview!???
Rocky Road - Luv they can't hurt
lvan/CT - Sheila - We like it. We see it as being reflective.
john - keith, briefly can you give me steps of discipline for a disruptive child i.e interview question
LAURI/HS math - andie, I just called and asked for an interview...
Rocky Road - persistence andi
Laurie - thank you for you advice!
Keith - i have enjoyed it - i hope some of you think about maryland - hope i can help our again
teach - yes
LAURI/HS math - Keith & Rocky Road ~ thank you sooo much for your time!!!
andie - And.......??? Did you get it?
Rocky Road - this is helping me to process my thoughts too
andie - Thank you for your help !!!
lvan/CT - andie - When we review paperwork, we look for somebody with a cover letter that conveys a sense of humor and passion for teaching; strong letters of recommendation; a strong academic record; and qualfied for the position.
Keith - john - class plan - next step private talk with child - involvement with home - councelor - then office as last -
Rocky Road - we had some great questions
teach - if you haven't gotten a call back for a demo lesson should you call or is that too pushy
Rocky Road - I agree Ivan
andie - How do I convey those things? I have both
john - keith, thanks hopefully your district will call me back for a second interview
LAURI/HS math - Kathleen, thank you too!!! (o:
Kurt/CA - At this point, any position would do
MnM - To all of you - Thank you for both your answers and your questions. You've been quite helpful. :)
Keith - john - did you apply
Kathleen - I'm always impressed with the talent among our community, and the willingness of people to donate their time and expertise to help others at Teachers.Net!
john - did a job fair inter and it went well, when are you doing next inter?
Keith - john - where did we talk with you
Rocky Road - ask away folks
john - towson state
Keith - private mail me with your name and i will look at the status of the app. on Friday
Kurt/CA - Is having a masters a hinderance or a benefit for a new teacher
Keith - kurk - no problem here
john - thanks, for the help, will do
Rocky Road - kurt it depends on the restirctions the prin has from the local board
Maggie1NC - Rocky, my hubby is working towards a biology degree and plans to teach. How is the market for science teachers where you are and in general.
Keith - maggie- science positions are hot in MD>
Rocky Road - always need good science and math teachers
Keith - can say that again
Maggie1NC - Keith and Rocky, what is the pay like in MD and CA for science teachers.
Rocky Road - don't know Maggie I am in MH
Kurt/CA - It depends on the district, science teachers usually can get a job easily
Keith - 1st year 29,000 with BS
Rocky Road - thats NH
Rocky Road - seems like there is a lull here
andie - I hate to be redundant but... the reason I got on here tonight is because I really am in a slump with the cover letter writing. Input from anyone would be really great.
Kathleen - I think people are talked out :-)
Kurt/CA - This usually happens
Keith - well - it has been a long day that started at 7am and ended with my last meeting at 8:30 i have enjoyed the session - I hope I helped someone out - good luck to all
Kathleen - Teachers.Net appreciates the time John Rocky Road and Keith have given to help our community this evening! Thank you to all participants.
Rocky Road - so Keith did you have fun here tonight?
Maggie1NC - Rocky, oh okay
andie - Thank you Keith!
Keith - great time - the best part of the job is talking to new teachers
Sue - Thanks everyone

Keith - see ya!!!!!!!!
