Avalon - Hi, I have been looking for a teaching position for 3 years. Is it my cover ltr.
Angela - I have not taught since 1993, but now that I have moved to Nevada, I would like to get back into it, and I am not sure if I am not getting called for an interview because I haven't taught, or because I am new in the area or...
Jack - I'm one of your "panelists" for the conference. I am a Supt. in Nebraska (270 kids K-12), a small rural district. I interview teachers for about 1-2 positions annually. What questions might you have?
Debbie - What is the best way to find out if you even have an opening?
Addie/k/mo - welcome, jack!
PamAZ - Jack, I would like to know what kind of questions to ask when I interview
Kat/Kathleen - Hi, Jack, thank you for helping us with this "workshop"! :-)
Bob R/CA - greetings everyone :o)
Kat/Kathleen - Bob, meet Jack Moles, one of our guest leaders :-)
Bob R/CA - Jack, I'm Bob Reap, the site administrator, just give a holler if you need any help here :o)
Jack - Avalon, it's hard to know what the problem might be without seeing the letter.
Bob R/CA - (thanks Kat ;o)
Kikilia - and how do you explain in an interview a bad first year experience without making it sound personal?
Kat/Kathleen - Jack, do you have enough questions for now ;-)?
Jack - Kikilia--we have all been in the situation of having to address a bad situation. Try not to place too much blame on the other party, but it still may come up. Just be honest and tell what you learned from the experience.
Kikilia - and when is it not appropriate to phone bldgs or districts about openings?
*Janet/Ar* - Hi everyone! What are some of the questions that are asked by administrators during interviews?
Jack - Kikilia, you can always send letters of inquiry or make calls. I, personally, don't usually do much with those other than to file them unless I have a specific opening. I don't hold it against anyone, however.
Kikilia - what type of thing are administrators looking for when they ask about your best/worst experience?
Dana - What would make an administrator consider a first-year teacher?
shimell - Tell us some things that you look for in candidates you interview.
Angela - Jack, when you do have a specific opening, do you go back to the resumes on file?
Debbie/sub - I have been subbing for 6 years. I love it but I want a full time job. I have been on a long-term, for the same teacher, twice this year. First for six weeks, and now I've been in for seven weeks. It just makes me want my own classroom MORE.
Debbie - What I gave as my worst experience was a situation where I couldn't help a student because he had so many home life problems.
Crys/IN - Because there are so few jobs, the competition in IN is sooooo great. How can I get an edge over the next person?
Jack - Janet/Ar--some of the questions I ask are: 1. Why this specific position? 2. What do you have to offer our school? 3. What strengths do you have that should put you above others? 4. What extra things can you provide us with (i.e. coaching, sponsor
Dave - Good evening all. Sorry I am late... I am Jack's co-host
Kikilia - and is it okay in an interview to be so honest as to say... i want this grade because grade x just didn't work for me?
Addie k/mo - welcome, dave!
unique - How do you answer the question "Tell me about yourself"... I mean, i'm 21 and just graduated... I'm pretty dull
*Janet/Ar* - I have not long termed yet. I have my apps and coverletters and resumes out so hope to get called soon.
PamAZ - I am going from a state that stresses whole language and into a state that is not useing it much any more....how do I explain that I do a balaned program and that I don't like whol language for special kids , but not wanting sound that is is a put down?
Jack - Crys--you have to market yourself based on your special abilities, interests, skills, etc. Administrators are often looking for someone who can fill may roles.
Kikilia - and why do social studies positions always seem to be tied to coaching?
Jack - Hi Dave--good to talk with you again.
*Janet/Ar* - Me too unique. I am a plain jane but I love working with children and want to make a difference in their lives some how.
Bob R/CA - Hi Dave!
Kikilia - should i forward a cover letter to the districts i've applied to? they only asked for a resume
Dave - Looks like we have a ton and a half of questions...
Kat/Kathleen - Hi, Dave, thank you for coming tonight to do this "workshop" for Teachers.Net!!
Jack - Kikilia--I am an old Social Studies teacher and coach!!!!!!! Many who want to coach enter SS for some unknow reason. I wanted to teach history and coaching was something that also held my interest.
Debbie - How much infor mation should the cover letter have about YOU and how much about their school?
Dana - What are your views on portfolios? And should you try to go over them during the interview or leave them for an administrator's perusal?
*Janet/Ar* - Jack, I am cert. in elem. ed./spec. ed./and social studies. So I feel that I am a well rounded cert. teacher.
Kat/Kathleen - Dave, just pick a question and work on one at a time, we'll try to pace our questions
Debbie/sub - What can you do to make sure that you get an interview? My district isn't very loyal to its subs.
Jack - Kikilia--I would certainly send a cover letter--it gives you a chance to blow your own horn.
shimell - Portfolios--What items do you like to look at in them?
Kikilia - i'd like to teach history/soc. studies too... but because i'm not a coach...even at middles school level, i feel stuck in elementary school
Kikilia - what things should be in the cover letter?
May - Is it worth applying to schools that have not yet posted a position?
Deb/IA - I send a cover letter in a small portfolio with my resume plus a few other nice things! Still can't get a full time job!
Jack - Shimell--I haven't dealt much with portfolios. We did have an art opening this past year and only one applicant brought his portfolio to the interview. I was surprised.
Kikilia - it's not that i'm not qualified to coach some things.. but i want a life outside of school.
Kat/Kathleen - Let's hold further questions for a bit to give Dave and Jack time to answer some..
mona - how important is a portfolio? If you haven't taught for quite some time what should go in?
Dave - Okay Kat, thanks... Let me share my experience with the application process, both applying and what to submit
Kikilia - may: that's how i got my first ft job. i applied to a district without openings and was called at the last minute
Addie k/mo - most people in our area that are fresh out of college have portfolios. they include a philosophy of ed, sample unit plans, letters of rec and photos from stu. teaching.
Dave - The Application process... ready all?
Jack - Kikilia--its obvious that your location might demand some coaching. How about doing some volunteer coaching to get some experience and background?
Marcie - How long do districts keep a credential file?
Debbie - Getting references: as a sub I am uncomfortable asking for people to be my references for possible other jobs. Should I still ask them?
Dave - The application process: first, find a position that you would like to fill, for whatever legitimate reason you see fit... interest, skills, training, experience
Jack - Marcie--we have been advised by our attorney to keep credential files for a full year from the time of hiring so that if someone is disgruntled we can use them in evidence.
Dave - Second... Get a copy of the job description and application from the agency
Jack - Someone is not getting concrete answers (couldn't read name) what are you looking for?
Addie k/mo - debbie, definitely ask those that you know that are in a position to write a recommendation. they will understand your desire for a full time position
Dave - Third... write a cover letter, including a resume, the application, and any other documents that are requested... get them in ON TIME!
Kikilia - dave: what should one include in the cover letter?
Debbie/sub - I think subbing is great experience, but it seems that most districts around me (Northern NJ) want REAL experience. As for being a parent, life experience sometimes helps to make the best teachers.
JJ/NM - Dave, would you suggest calling an agency after submitting a resume etc.??
Angela - What if references are from non-teaching positions--will that have any negative effect?
Dave - Fourth... wait for an answer.... you should get something from the agency (district, county office, whatever)... it may take a bit... the answer may be thanks but no thanks.
*Janet/Ar* - When I went to the central school disctrict office they gave me some simple reference forms for people to fill out. I had no problems with getting a principal.teacher. and the one that calls to subs to fill one out and send it in.
Kikilia - what goes in the cover letter?
Jack - Kikilia--in a cover letter I would include reasons why you are interested in this specific position and district, what you can offer my school, and your specific strengths that give you an advantage over others.
*Janet/Ar* - Angela do you sub? If so get some of the teachers you feel comfortable with to write one for you.
Deb/IA - Is there a good reference book you could recommend with teacher cover letter, resume samples?
unique - what if you dont get an answer when you wait? It's been 5 weeks since an interview for a job I really want. the principal told my mentor that I was the top prospect for the job but I havent heard anything from them... should I call them again?
Dave - Okay... to answer some questions, it is okay to call the agency after submitting it, but don't rush... do it after waiting a reasonable amount of time or, to inquire if the material was received... not a problem
JudiFL - any advice for someone returning to education after several years?
Ariel - I've been asked for a "letter of intent" is this the same as a cover letter?
Debbie/sub - Some teachers have suggested that you call or repeatedly send in your cover letter. That seems a bit pushy to me. What does anyone else think?
*Janet/Ar* - Shimshell, I have been told to maket ones self!!!
Jack - Angela--references from a non-teaching position are not negative as long as you provide some from education.
Rose - One of the questions is : What are your future educational goals and how do you plan to achieve them?
Kikilia - okay....what goes in the cover letter?
Avalon - I have sent a resume, cover ltr. transcripts, certificate, letter of recommendation etc. I have even filled out the applications, but I never hear from any of them until I get the rejection ltr.
Mali - I live in a small town...a city school system and a county system...I was told last year there were no openings in either...but there were...just small town politics?
Angela - No, I have subbed in the past (about 5 years ago), but I am currently working in the education department of the local PBS station--related work, but not direct teaching experience.
Dana - I keep calling the personnel director every 3-4 weeks. They seem okay with it and it's very informative.
Jack - Unique(?)--I would definitely make contact by now
Dave - What goes in the cover letter, Kikilia wants to know... in my experience, paragraph 1... "I am applying for the job..." Paragraph 2 "Here are 3 highlights from my enclosed resume" Paragraph 3 "I hope to see you soon at an interview" one page... period
Kat/Kathleen - Jack, is it a good idea to call weekly?
unique - jack.. I called them 2 weeks ago and he said that they were going to get serious about it that week. at my interview he said they hoped to have someone by the end of the shcool year (last week)... should i call again?
Jack - Unique--I would
Dave - Some districts work slower than others... if you call for a status report, ask when they expect to have interviews set up... if you don't hear from them by that time, most likely you will not have been chosen for interview
Kikilia - what if the cover letter needs to be general..open to different grades? or should it be sent to bldg administratiors
Jack - Mali--small town politics can be real. Often it is WHO you know. I know most administrators in the state and get good response from them and them from me.
Dave - Janet... the cover letter should be no more than one full page... brag but be clear with your experience and skills
e - I know they will ask your philosophy about classroom management. What is a good response?
Debbie - Mali: My landlady (not a teacher) knew 2 weeks before I did that I got a long term subbing job.
Dave - The cover letter needs to go to whatever personnel office sent out the announcements, unless you know or hear otherwise
mona - when an administrator looks at your resume and cover letter what will stand out and give you an interview?
Mali - Jack, I do "know" some...but how do I sell myself to those I do not, and those that have been cool...thanks
*Janet/Ar* - Dave, mine is less than a page. I heard that the coverletter is the most important and sometimes the resumes do not get seen until interview time.
Marcie - Jack what are the three steps you said?
Dave - Mona... what needs to stand out in a cover letter is a friendly request to have them look at your resume
Dave - What needs to stand out in your resume is enough information that says that you can do the job and have related experience
Dave - Your resume should not give away all your secrets, but should want a district to have you come in to talk with them in an interview
Jack - Mona--in the resume I look for neatness and design that will catch my eye (the first impression is important). For substance I look first at experiences, then professional accomplishments, community ivolvement (small town teachers need to be involved), s
Kikilia - so just general... any openings that may occur?
Avalon - How does a new teacher get a position if she does not have related experience?
Dave - I absolutely agree with Jack... resume that has relevent, logical info in a way that someone can scan it in 30 seconds, yes 30 seconds
Pip - Avalon - perhaps you've worked in summer camps or have done something with children.
*Janet/Ar* - Dave, I got a lesson published in a book that is coming out this summer. Should I mention it in the resume and also I have my own website. I have been told to put those in.
Debbie/sub - What do you consider "involved". I have volunteered my life away for the past ten years in this town.
Kikilia - avalon: tutored?
Mali - Avalon, I detailed my student teaching...
JJ/NM - Because of distance, I have a phone interview tomorrow! Any suggestions????
Jack - Avalon--a new teacher needs to be able to sell a true love of teaching, kids, and subject or grade area. Related experiences are also very helpful.
Debbie - I'm looking into relocating where there may be more openings; however, you need the funds to get there, and as a sub, I just don't have them yet. Suggestions?
Dave - Pip... classroom experience would be under "Teaching Experience" and camps and the like would come under "Related Experience" and important to say
Pip - Janet - Anything that you have done that has gotten published realted to teaching should most definitley be included:) Give yourself credit and a pat in the back.
Peachy - What would you look for in an older teacher applying to the public system for the first time?
Marcie - do you need to wait for an opening before submitting your credentials?
Dave - Janet... put in what is relevant to teaching... your book would be valuable... your web site may or may not... yes if related to education
Rose - Jack: One question is What are your future educational goals and how do you plan to achieve them? Do they mean me personally, or the childrens?
Debbie - Do you recommend complete sentences for the information in your resume, or partial ones?
Pip - Marcie - I tell teachers or soon-to-be teachers to send resumes to school even if they are not looking at the time b/c you never know. They may call you foe subbing.
Dave - Length of documents submitted is very important... STOP and THINK... an administrator looking for a teacher gets 75 apps... how much time per app do you think each one will get?
Dave - Debbie... summary phrases are fine
Jack - Rose: I think that question means you personally, at least when I ask it!
Jaime - Does every state have the "seniority" rule?
Dave - Janet... PUT IT IN! Shows initiative and computer skills, very valuable and competitive
Ariel - My district is very political, but I do know a few teachers. Do teachers have much "power" to help out another teacher trying to get a position??
Debbie - thank you. As an English teacher, I was afraid they might be leary of that on my resume.
itsabouttime - TN does not have the senority rule.
Dave - Jaime... what do you mean about seniority? Current staff or new hires?
Dana - My resume is three pages, but I have two years of substitute experience, plus graduate school education, and stud. teaching details (concise), then two other job experiences (we're military and moved a lot til now) Is this going to hurt me?
Deb/IA - Dave - here in Iowa elem and ms can expect 200-600 applications for jobs
Marcie - will getting my masters in reading specialist help me?
Dave - Ariel... helps to know who to know, if nothing else, to know what to say if you get to the interview
Sam - If you have quite a bit on your resume, can you just list your experience without any added detail as to what you did?
Pip - Ariel - I definitely think a teacher can get another teacher in. That's how I got into the school I'm in now. Thanks to a good friend who I worked with before and was leaving. I got her spot.
Jack - Ariel--it matters who the teacher is. If they are a good staff member they would carry weight. If they are not cooperative I might not put much weight to their input.
Avalon - Mali and Jack-I've done that. I had my own daycare, I write short stories, and would love to teach 4-8 grades. Maybe IL is a tough state, but I am getting worn out after 3 years of no job. How long does it take? Good question Peachy!
Dave - Dana... Get your resume down to the most important 2 pages and stop there
Jaime - Must all states, by law, hire teachers with experience before teachers without experience?
unique - same here deb... my college alone graduated about 600 elem majors, but in oklahoma, the projected number of openings is about 100
Jack - Ariel--other teachers might carry weight, but if matters on who that teacher is. If they are a good staff member definitely. If they are not cooperative I probably would not give their input much weight.
Dave - Jaime... different districts will hire the person with the most sense but may have to look at your credentials and know that you have one before they will hire a person without
Pip - Jaime - I know that when a catholic school closes, principals have to interview those teachers first but that doesn't mean they get hired.
*Janet/Ar* - Thanks, Dave I already put them in hoping that I had done the right thing that I was being told. My resume is one page and less that a half of another page very short. My previous jobs have been limited due to working at the hospital for 20 years now.
Dana - Dave, what would you recommend? (importance on resume) I've worked non-education jobs to get by while we were moving so otherwise I'd show a gap. ?
KC/PA - Debbie, that sounds familiar but here they're looking for men in the elementary schools
Dave - Ready for the interview discussion yet?
mona - you get an interview ha ha what will they look for what if you are not very articulate?
Dave - Dana... put only relevant experience in your resume... your non-educational time could be explained in your cover letter
Mali - KC, they are looking for men and "minorities" here...
bob - I had a one year contract and need to reinterview for my job for next year. How do I make a super impression during the interview?
Dave - Here comes the INTERVIEW, folks...
Rose - I am from NJ and I just passed my NTE's I am not certified yet until after my first year of teaching. Do I just leave that blank on the application?
Pip - Here's a question - I used to work as a bookkeeper/cashier at a supermarket over 8 years ago. Should this be taken out of my resume. I always felt it was important b/c it showed that I could be trusted with lots of things and had managerial responsibilites.
Marcie - what is the difference between cover letter and letter of intent
Kikilia - i'm qualified for middle school and could do secondary.. i've enough hours... problem is.. I was a history major and don't coach
Sweetpea - I have 16 years experience and relocated to another state. Will my years help or will they look over me for the new hires?
Debbie - sarahw: I am long term subbing in the middle school I attended. I think that is one reason I got this job.
Dave - One last answer about letters... letter of intent is the same if you say in your cover letter that you are applying for the position... interveiw info in 30 seconds... tick tick tick tick.........
Jaime - Good question SweetPea
Jack - Kikilia: I'm back on. I'm computer illeterate sometimes.
Debbie - What should you wear and bring to an interview?
Jack - Kikilia: what questions do you have about interviews?
Sam - Interviews - I was asked a question that was very specific to the grade--how do you prepare for those toughies if you haven't taught?
Dave - The interview... first question... what should you bring (thanks Deb)... dress up! Look good and PROFESSIONAL
Kikilia - how do administrators feel about women who wear pant suits as opposed to skirts? if women of same qualifications were interviewing, would skirt get job if all else was equal?
itsabouttime - Should we look like we are taking notes?
Jack - Debbie: I would dress appropriately, plus some, for the position you are interviewing for. Dresses or suits for women and suit and tie for men are appropriate for most positions.
Dave - Next, bring a copy of your application and resume
Debbie/sub - In NJ, you don't get a permanent certification right away anymore. You have to be mentored your first year--then you get your cert.
mona - i want to know what they mean by tell us about yourself my educational philosophy
Dave - Next, bring a sample of things you have done with the grade level you are looking to capture
Jack - Kikilia: can't speak for all my comrades, but dress versus pantsuit carries no weight with me--as Dave said just look professional
Dana - What if you're a new teacher, dave?
sarahw - Kik-- I've been on our campus interview committee for years. Never notice pants vs skirts, just look for dressed nicely and appropraitely (had one with lots of showing --umm, -cleavage--she didn't get the job!)
*Janet/Ar* - Dave, with me being triple certified should I bring samples of each?
Debbie - Hair up or down? I know it's a small thing, but I always wonder.
Mali - Jack, I have certification for grades 4-8...but never had a education course in math or science...I already had 2 BA's and a MA...I have told interviewers this fact...did I shoot myself in the foot?
FEDUPINAL - I need some expert advice.. I want a job... I've done everything except scrub the toilets for the past 5 yrs and I get good evaluations, but never HIRED! Please tell me what to do to make a difference.. I have an interview on MONDAY
Pip - A friend of mine put together a portfolio and got hired on the spot. She still hasn't shown it to me though so I don't know what was in it.
Jack - Mona--I never ask someone to tell me about their edu phil. I think that is a lousy question. Specific questions as to teaching style, discipline style, etc. are more valid. They should outlaw that question.
Dave - Next, have potential questions in mind... what kind of curriculum are you already familiar with? How do you do discipline? Have you had particular experiences in the latest buzzwords?
itsabouttime - What would be an example of good example of past work?
Jack - Debbie--hair up or down doesn't matter to me as long as it's neat and kept nice.
*Janet/Ar* - I have never been evaluated as a sub here. Should I check into that?
Kikilia - what do you want to hear for discipline style? Harry Wong or Positive discipline?
FEDUPINAL - is race a big thing in your state?
Dave - Next, be honest! If you don't have an answer, no prob. What would be your best guess and answer it that way
Kat/Kathleen - Dave, would photographs of a classroom in action be acceptable? (for Peachy)
Marcie - what should I say when asked "tell me about yourself?
Debbie/sub - Pip, I'm not sure what states they accept. You might have to take a few course. NJ also has an alternative route. They might accept you under that.
Jack - Kikilia--positive discipline is my preferred
Pip - One question that might be asked is this - try and answer it. What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Mel/NJ - Marcie just try and list your best qualities and what makes you you
Dave - For Peachy... photos might be nice to show what kinds of things you have on the wall or other materials you have made, but showing kids would be just for fun, which, in some interviews, may not be a bad idea
Debbie/sub - Rose, yes I am. Are you?
Jack - FED...--race is not a big thing here. We probably get 99.9% caucasian applicants. It would play no part, however, in who got a job.
JJ/NM - Would student work be appropriate for a portfolio??
Kat/Kathleen - Dave or Jack, is it a good idea to bring portfolio items to leave with the interviewer to be picked up later?? give an opportunity for more contact?
JudiFL - Iget very nervous during interviews- any words of wisdom?
Ariel - Dave/Jack --did you ever say that it is important to bring samples to the interview?
Peachy - Dave, what about age?
*Janet/Ar* - Dave, I am triple certified should I bring samples of each?
Debbie - All I keep hearing about are block scheduling and multiple intelligences.
Dave - itsabouttime... bring things that will show your unique talents and skill... ALL... bring but don't force it on an interview team... respect their time and other needs
Marcie - should I tell about my nursing credits/science class?
sarahw - Dana-- hang around the teachers.net chat board to pick up all teh latest stuff!
Mali - Jack, our district has been put on notice by the NAACP, that we have to have more minorities...
FEDUPINAL - I am being told that "we are under court order to hire minority, particularly "African American"... I have African American friends, but that should not guarantee you a job... in my opinion ! What is your opinion on that issue?
Dana - Teachers.net has a section on portfolios that's pretty good if you all haven't seen it
Dave - janet... bring copies of all those important documents... they may hire you on the spot and you could register them at that time
Dave - Peachy... what about age?
Jack - Kat/Kathleen--as I stated earlier--I've got little experience with portfolios, but they would most certainly help in showing the abilities of the candidate.
Kikilia - where do we find info on job fairs in our areas?
unique - I'm Native American.. will that help me in getting a job... and should I mention my heritage since I dont look it?
JJ/NM - Jack or Dave, how do I handle a phone interview??? I can't show them my portfolio???
Peachy - Would a person over fifty have much of a chance, Dave??
Kat/Kathleen - Is maturity (as in age) a plus?
Dave - Marcie... if you have subbed or taught, bring anything you consider relevant, but focus on your classroom activities
Marcie - what is it under?
Kat/Kathleen - JJ, maybe you could send a packet in advance of the interview?
FEDUPINAL - me too unique... I am a member of the MaChis Creek Indian Tribe... but that is NOT considered minority in the state of ALABAMA!
Jack - Mali--we have almost no minority applications. We are a very rural area and other schools in the area report the same thing. Some of my colleagues and I discussed that one time and we couldn't quite explain it.
Dana - Ditto on the telephone interview question- I'm out of state
*Janet/Ar* - Thanks Dave. How does the weeding out process go when administrators are weeding through coverletters and resumes to see who gets the interview and what does one look for in order to choose one for the interview?
JJ/NM - Wish I could, they just called me and the interview is tomorrow!!!!
Dave - fedupinal... difficult to deal with how different districts deal with gender/race/disabled issues... you may want to call and ask them their policies... some are under fed and state laws
Jack - For info on job fais check with area colleges and universities in their placement departments.
sarahw - When we innterview, we look for folks who are familiar with current research (or have an idea how to access it) and who seem flexible--age doesn't matter
Pip - On my first interview, my resume was on blue paper, it stood out and I got called in and got hired that day.
Dave - Marcie, it should go in your resume under "related experience"
Addie k/mo - JJ could you fax paper documents ahead of your interview?
itsabouttime - Does the stationary your coverletter or resume come on have any influence?
unique - good idea addie
*Janet/Ar* - Jack, the fact that I am hearing impaired myself have an impact on an administrator hiring one.
Dana - Re: telephone interview- the districts I've applied to already have my certifications, stud. teaching evals., references, applications, should I send anything else? (oh, and resume too)
Angela - Does blue or colored paper or "cute" paper with pencils and apples on it really get you noticed, or do people think it's too cute?
FEDUPINAL - I faxed my resume and cover letter today to another district hoping to get an interview..... just waiting to hear, 3 out of 6 principals have to have an interest in you to get an interview
Debbie - I keep hearing all this hyp about a massive retirement of teachers. Dave or Jack, do you see this happening?
Jack - itsa...--the stationery does have a subliminal effect. It helps to make that important first impression.
Dave - Janet... how does an admin choose among the stack of apps that come in? Look for experience and appropriate credentials first, related experience next, anything that indicates current education in process for specialized stuff and then other things
Mali - Would the fact that I had taught Adult Ed hurt me?
Dave - Debbie, depends on the state... CA just had a massive amount of openings... class size reduction... look for those things
Kat/Kathleen - Dave, isn't an administrator looking to fill "gaps" in his/her existing faculty?
Jack - Angela: I wouldn't use the "cute" paper items for resumes. Use a very professional heavier bond paper.
Debbie - I can't afford to work on my Master's Degree yet. How do I deal with this topic if they ask?
Dave - If you have a special ed credential or experience, LIST it... or speech/language experience, etc.
Ry - I have an interview for a fifth or fourth grade position in a distsrict I have been subbing in for four years --any suggestions?
Kat/Kathleen - Dave, I meant is sometimes looking to fill gaps
itsabouttime - Is being bubbly good or bad for a teacher interview. Calm and collected?
Jack - Kat/Kathleen: filling gaps is important in a rural district. We may ask for coaching, sponsorships, teaching outside of area for a class or two, etc.
sarahw - itsa-- calm and collected , PLEASE ;-)
Dave - As a special education admin, I fill gaps but look first for those who match the needs we have programmatically, then begin to look at other potential candidates
Jimmie/ESL/TX - I have always done resumes (education or business) on a buff, cream, eggshell high quality bond paper. It's just the way I was taught.
Pip - its - I think you should keep your professionalism but if you have a good sense of humor you should show it.
Angela - Jack--thanks--that's what I use, but I was recently at a job fair and I saw a lot of people with the cute stuff--just wondering.
JJ/NM - Dave, would you list committee work such as curriculum or NCA??
Jill - I'm a sub in several school districts and I've been told that they are very pleased with me. I'm also certified and have a masters in early childhood ed. I hear that sometimes being a good sub does not help you get hired because they need their good subs so badly! What do others say about this?
Dave - Debbie, tell them if you are planning to go for a higher degree
Deb/IA - I use the cute paper to frame my room pictures, schedules, parent letters, etc, in my portfolio
Kat/Kathleen - I know that for many interviewers, bubbly comes off as ding-y or shallow, cool, calm, friendly &  professtional; is better
Marcie - do portfolios help?
Jack - itsa...: Overly bubbly is out. Showing enthusiasm is in. There is a happy medium. Only act cool and collected if that is your nature.
sarahw - Jill, good subs are hard to find, but they ought to give you a job if they are pleased w/ your performance (or make you a permanent sub w/ benefits and a decent salary/!)
Dave - JJ/NM... committee work related to education is valuable... list it under related experience
Debbie - How can I avoid looking desperate for a job at the interview?
Addie k/mo - calm, but there still has to be a measure of enthusiasm...a friend of mine (suppossedly) didnt get hired right away because she didnt appear "friendly" and "outgoing" enough
itsabouttime - I just sent out 3 resumes on sky blue paper that had a hint of white coulds going through. I figured it would show creativity and excitement.
Debbie/sub - Jill, I hear this all the time. In my district it is getting harder and harder to get any subs, let alone quality subs. I've been told that they won't even look at me becauce they can't afford to lose me as a sub.
Jack - Jill: unfortunately I think good subs are sometimes at a disadvantage. I try not to let it affect me, but it may.
Pip - The best thing to do would be to act yourself, but rememebr that first appearances go far beyond that.
Ariel - After listening to Dave & Jack, I've decided that I didn't highlight the right things in my cover letter, and it's already turned in. Any recourse? Should I mail a new one?
Kat/Kathleen - addie, that's good advice, not too bubbly, but warm..yes
Dana - how could a sub get more involved (like committee work, etc.) in case I have to sub again next year?
Dave - Debbie, walk in as if you are interested, but don't absolutely need THIS job
Deb/IA - Jill - I am in the same boat. I have been complimented by 2 administrations on how well I handle BD and sped kids! They specifically ask for me to handle all problem classes! I'll never get out of the great sub rut!
*Janet/Ar* - Jack, I am hearing impaired myself, does that really have an impact on administrators when hiring someone?
itsabouttime - Is a light yellow summery long dress appropriate?
Kat/Kathleen - Ariel is worried that her cover letter (already submitted) is not adequate... what should she do??
Dave - Ariel... just use this info the next time... probably too late this time, just let it ride, but keep applying
Jack - Ariel: I would not mail a new one. I don't think it would serve your intended purpose.
Debbie/sub - Jack, If a person is such a good sub, shouldn't you want them to have their own class. It seems as if administrators are penalizing us for subbing.
Angela - But even the best subs get sick of waiting for a full time job and look elsewhere--that's how I ended up working first at a college then at the PBS station here.
Marcie - Dave, should I send out a new act clearence every year?
Jack - Janet/Ar: as long as it would not substantially hamper the position you are interfering for it should not have an effect, but I can't say that it won't.
Dave - Debbie/Sub... apply to districts where you don't sub... your foot is already in the door... it might be nice to mention that to your current employer so they know you are serious about working full time
FEDUPINAL - I keep hearing tips of doing what I've been already doing... wonder what is not right?
Dave - Marcie I don't understand the question... a new "act clearance"?
Debbie/sub - I've tried that. But I've been told that THEY hire from their sub lists. I guess it is time to start subbing in other towns.
Dana - Dave or Jack, the committee work, etc. for subs?
Jack - Debbie: I don't think a good sub should be at a disadvantage, but we have a very serious shortage of good subs. It does cross the mind. I can't say that it has affected me, but I know in some cases it does.
*Janet/Ar* - I feel with me being hearing impaired myself and the struggles I went through in school would be good experience and I can empathize more with specially challenged children. I wear hearing aids and do very well. My speece was not effected due to loosing hearing 3 years ago.
Ry - I am in the same boat. I have been subbing for four years and am tired of hearing what an excellent job I do and still do not get hired. My interview on Friday is my third interview for this district.
Mali - I have applied in a system where I am also a parent...is that a problem in itself?
Dave - Kikilia... look for what the job announcement tells you... type a resume that matches that position, rather than always sending out a general one
Island Girl - I have a position for next year, but still had questions about standard response screening tests.
Dave - Janet... know your rights under ADA
mona - about portfolio when i went to school they didn't have classes on that its been years since I taught and I don't feel I have enough to really show should I put something together anyway?
itsabouttime - What is a question that is often asked that might fluster the interviewie?
FEDUPINAL - ADA?
Marcie - the criminal and state clearences- Dave
Island Girl - Mali, I wouldn't think so, but I got a FAST reject letter where my kids are.
*Janet/Ar* - Dave, Where do I find the ADA rights?
unique - fed... american disabilities act
Addie k/mo - janet, i think that you have a valid point, that could be strategically brought up in an interview.
Dave - Mali... being a parent is not a problem as long as what you are applying for looks like a legitimate request to the district as if you were not a parent there
Jack - A suggestion for subs might be to get involved in the school on a volunteer basis. This might show that extra bit that is needed. Of course, the way some of you are describing things this may work in reverse.
itsabouttime - Should I have a list of questions about the district or would that be too pushy?
Island Girl - Mono, My school had a whole list of things to include in a portfolio, classroom rules, sample letters to parents, sample student contracts and on and on.
Debbie - When I was just daily subbing, I always held any detentions myself. I think this made a good impression.
Marcie - Jack , does subbing in a district help?
Deb/IA - I have a part time classroom in my district, sub, do committee work and work the FB games - still no help in getting full time!!!
Dave - Janet... the ADA rights are on the Internet... but very complicated... look under American Disabilities Act in Infoseek or Yahoo
Jack - itsa...: Showing some knowledge about the district and having some questions about the district show a desired level of interest by the candidate.
Jill - Does being a permanent sub in a school give you a much better chance to get hired there? I've been offered that possibility but did not take it because I wanted to remain visible to the other schools.
Ry - I have put a poem that I wrote as the opening page of my portfolio. It expresses my interest and some of my qualities. Does anyone think this is inappropriate? I have asked other teachers and they thought it was great!
Debbie - Marci: I think that should help you. Stress how important the school is to you.
Dave -  more and more and more special ed inclusion coming and "willing" teachers will be sought
Debbie/sub - Marcie, Don't the sub callers get mad when you tell them you can't work because you are working in another district?
Jack - Janet: didn't want to give you the wrong impression. I am just saying that in reality some administrators might take this into consideration, just as some administrators might take race, creed, gender, etc. into consideration. It doesn't make it right,
Dana - I'm taking sign language classes in case I have any children in myclass who need it? Should I mention this/
Dave - By the way, I am an admin in special ed, operating deaf, blind and severly handicapped programs.... tons of jobs for special ed folks... think about additional credentials
Debbie - Jack or Dave: What is the best way to end an interview? Just a handshake? Asking when they will know?
Jack - Debbie: those are great experiences that should give you a leg up.
itsabouttime - My question of taking notes or asking questions to the interview was not answered or I might have missed it.
Dave - How to end an interview... watch for the team to give you the lead, but do offer a handshake to EVERY member of the team... really helps... thank them for their time and ask any questions during that opening, such as when the team will be making decisions
Jack - Debbie: asking for a timeline on the selection is very appropriate.
Ry - Does anyone have any advice about adding a poem written by me to my portfolio--Any adminisrtators?
itsabouttime - We keep hearing how there is a desperate need for teachers. How come it is so hard to find a job?
*Janet/Ar* - Jack, I understand. I just do not like the idea of administators not even giving specially challenged people a chance. I am very honest and people know that I am hearing impaired. JJ I am in Arkansas. (Hot Springs)
mona - is it inappropriate to ask an interviewer to rephrase a queation or to elaborate? sometimes I am not quite sure what they are asking.
Dave - Ry... add a poem if part of what you do with kids, otherwise do it at your own risk
Dave - Janet... have you thought about teaching in Deaf/Hard of Hearing?
Addie k/mo - dave/jack, does it impress you or influence you when you receive a hand written thank-you note for the interview? i always did this and advise others to. is it helpful?
Jack - mona: I find it a sign of confidence when an interviewee asks for rephrasing or takes time to think through a question.
*Janet/Ar* - Dave, Do administrators pull out specific things from you resume to ask you at the interview.
Dave - Mona... don't be afraid to ask someone to rephrase a question or to clarify... it looks good on your part to do that
Jack - Addie: I've always been impressed by a thank you letter for the interview. Doesn't always help, but never hurts.
Dave - Addie... always a good thing to thank the team after the interview... address it to the team lead person, handwritten or otherwise
Dana - dave/jack- one of the questions I've heard refers to the most recent journal you've read - where can those of us not near a college read journals? I've tried the internet with no success
Jack - Janet: I take specific things out of interviews and letters of application.
Avalon - Should you call the district after you have sent in your application package? How long should you wait before calling?
Island Girl - Has anyone else had standard response screenings?
Dave - janet... we are suppose to use the same questions for each candidate, but may try to clarify, so if you answer a question that someone can use to expand, that helps
Kat/Kathleen - Dana, have you tired ERIC online?
Kat/Kathleen - Island Girl, I haven't heard of Standard...Screens, during job applications???
Jack - Dana: try your local library, your local district's teachers lounge, and the internet.
Addie k/mo - the international reading association has an excellent online journal
Dana - Kat- I did but I'll try again- it just gave me summaries and order information (I don't want to pay for each one)
Dave - Dana... subscribe to one of the teaching journals or look in your school for some... the internet may have access, your public library should or any university librabry will
Jack - Avalon: you should call the district to make sure that all required items are in.
itsabouttime - I will be getting to OR in mid June. I have already sent applicaitons etc. Do I make contact with someone when I get there?
Island Girl - Kat, Here, in order to get a building interview you have to pass a screening that consists of stadard questions with a rubric of answers, if you don't score high enough you don't get an interview.
Dana - I'm out of state and I've spoken with the personnel directors a few times and some principals too . I told them I'd get in touch when I got a local address- okay to stop by the school instead?
Debbie/sub - It didn't get me the job however. Went to a former aide.
Dave - Addie... yes... depending on who is doing the interview process.... locally, we ask the same questions in light of fairness to all candidates, but can expand if we want more... we also ask some open questions so a candidiate can legitimately brag
Jack - Debbie: I had a teacher walk in with her materials and asked to visit with me. We ended up having the interview right then. Although I didn't hire her she was next on my list (out of about 20 applicants). A walk in could work.
Debbie - I thought it might help and I might get to meet the principals. It worked both times. =)
Island Girl - The reason I'm asking is I didn't get a single interview that way. Luckily not every district is doing this.
Dave - itaboutime... call them and ask the status of your applications
*Janet/Ar* - Do a lot of administrators just go through the motions of interviewing when they already know who they want to hire?
Dave - Dana... best to call ahead only if they are busy when you get there... otherwise, they should not mind
itsabouttime - Dave..I should not go by the office and ask the status?
JJ/NM - What are the most common questions asked in an interview????
Ry - Are interviews different for elementary teachers as opposed to secondary?
Addie k/mo - IG, i have been "on the other side of the desk" so to speak. there were certain viewpoints on discipline and classroom mgt that they were looking for and the more you elaborated and gave examples for your answers, the higher you scored
Jack - Janet/Ar: My first impressions about who I am most interested often work out, but not always. This goes to show, though, that the written materials carry a lot of weight.
Dave - Janet... we legally have to open up an interview, if we don't have known individuals... some places have the people "wired" for the job, so they may just go through the process... it is a fact of life, although not fair and difficult to prove if they are
Mali - In my town, on the applications, there are blocks to check for teacher or paraprofessional...didn't check parapro last year...how do I let them know w/o sounding desperate now, that I'd take a parapro slot?
Dave - JJ... question in an interview would relate to the position you are applying for and your general knowledge of current methods in the teaching profession
Debbie - If you are applying for a job, should you also check that you are willing to sub? Does this hurt your chances?
Kat/Kathleen - Mali, I would let them know that you want very much to work with children, that you might consider such a position
Dave - Mali... call the admin in charge of the program and ask how you might get a paraprofessional position... honesty is usually respected
Jack - Janet: you didn't offend me--hope I didn't offend you. I was just stating what you probably already have experienced from some administrators.
Dave - Debbie, ask if there is a sub list in case you are not chosen
Dana - What are your views on subbing? Is it better to have subbed at manyschools or just a few, but those few know you well?
Addie k/mo - i would do well, now that i have seen the questions!!! from what i saw while i was rating answers, was that elaboration was the key. For instance, if they asked how you would maintain positive relationships with parents, you would need to give specific examples such as "I would send home "happy grams" to let parents know what their child was doing right, contact them by phone if a child was absent for several days to see how they were doing, provide frequent feedback about progress and send home a monthly newsletter to highlight class activities. I would welcome parents into my classroom to volunteer with projects and be willing to conference before and after school when requested"
FEDUPINAL - one school in particular, hires subs who have just high school diplomas when there are certified teachers like myself waiting for a job.. I have a MS by the way
Jack - Janet: keep at it--things will work out.
Debbie - If you do not want to sub, but want a full time job, do you think this hurts your chances? Should you just let them put you on their sub list?
itsabouttime - Should we take notes and ask questions?
Island Girl - Dana, I wondered about subing also, is it an asset?
JJ/NM - Dave, what are some common questions asked for an interview?? Headstart
unique - fed.. here also.. it's cheaper to have a non-certified sub
Dave - Dana... we will take successful subs often as a first choice, if they did a good job and are credentialled in the area we need (remember I am in special ed)
mona - what about your weaknesses and strenghts what would they be looking for
Debbie/sub - Debbie, It depends on the district. Some hire directly from their sub lists. Mine doesn't.
FEDUPINAL - not in alabama... its about the same a whopping 42 dollars a day BEFORE Uncle Sam eats it up
Dana - IG, I don't know. Many principals have told me that if you sub there first, they mgiht hire you when a position comes open next year?
Dave - Debbie, only sub if you want to and are willing to wait out a f/t position
Jack - The question about subbing: I think you need to know what is happening in your area. If you believe it hurts don't use it. If you think it will help do so.
Island Girl - Addie, so many of the people screening were elementary, I really wondered how they could rate my secondary answers.
Addie k/mo - if you only said that parent contact was important and that you would keep the parents informed about how their child was doing, you wouldnt score very well, because this isnt specific enough and isnt as thought out. although it answers the question, it wouldnt get a top rating
unique - heheh island girl.. my thoughts exactly! ~!!! what is your field of study?
*Janet/Ar* - My weakness is I want to do too much! Should that be an answer for my weakness?
Debbie - The problem is that I don't want to close any doors by not being available (subbing in another district) when they call.
Dave - JJ... common questions for head start... my best guess is that they would want to know what your experience with preschools has been, what is your awareness/knowledge of developmental information, and teh like... what discipline mihht be unique to this g
*Janet/Ar* - My strengths is my determination and dependiblity. I have 500 sick hours at the job I am at now.
Dana - What are good answers for weaknesses? Is it true that "perfectionist" is cliche?
Addie k/mo - i would think that the secondary questions would be somewhat different and you would just be "competing" with other secondary people. the interview i helped with was elementary music
Kat/Kathleen - JACK AND DAVE, AS WE NEAR THE END OF THIS SESSION: I wonder if you would be willing to !)return for another and, 2) respond to some posts on this topic on the administrators' chatboard during the coming weeks?
JJ/NM - Thanks Dave, just want to make sure I'm prepared!
Debbie/sub - Addie, since my best experience is my current long-term sub position, would it help to say what I did with these parents?
Dave - Debbie, subbing is 1. Good work 2. A foot in the door and 3. Useful to all, including the district
Island Girl - I had heard so many negative experience of subbing that I just didn't. I only had two building interviews, but I guess one job is all you need.
Jack - Dana: I think that perfectionist is somewhat of a cliche.
Debbie - Thank you Dave and Jack. This has been very informative. =)
Island Girl - Addie, that is one thing I found very odd, the same questions were for all levels and subjects.
Crys/IN - Kat--Thank you. I would attend another.
Dana - I have fifteen credits toward an Education Administration masters- does this look good or bad to an administrator? I just know I want to be a principal someday!
Dave - Kat, is there a special board where questions could be posted, so we don't need to filter through the widely used general board?
Jack - Kat/Kathleen: I would be willing to help again. This was a madhouse, but I had a great time. Sorry about not getting to all questions.
Addie k/mo - that is hard, debbie....if you can think of something specific to relate, like maybe one of the kids got hurt at recess and you walked them to the car and talked to the mom about it, showing concern...you might have to just speak hypothetically about what you would do if you had your own class
JJ/NM - Thank you Jack and Dave for helping us!!! :0)
Dave - No prob Debbie... a pleasure... we can do this again
Kat/Kathleen - Dave, we hae a special board for administrators, and we need your help to get the word out to your administrative colleagues :-)
Debbie - I said my weakness was that I get discouraged that I can't impact every student.
Dave - I am in CA
Jack - Deb/IA: I am from Nebraska. GO BIG RED!!!!!!
Deb/IA - Thank you Dave, Jack & hostess Kathleen (&Bob)!
Dave - No prob Kat, but most of my colleagues are not interested. Will pass the word to those that are
Jack - If I had jobs available you would at least all get an interview!!!!!!!!! If I hired all I would have lost all of my fantastic staff!
Dave - Mali... rather than think of weaknesses, think of areas in which you would like to gain more knowledge or skills
Crys/IN - I say that assigning grades are my weakness. Is this bad?
Dana - DAve, as an admin., can you answer my earlier question really quick? Does working toward an edadm degree look bad to administrators when I haven't even taught yet?
Addie k/mo - What is an administrator really looking for in the "weakness" question...ie. what is the point?
Kat/Kathleen - Dave and Jack, you sure jumped into the fire here tonight..a very busy session..since you are willing, I'll communciate about another session :-) THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
Peachy - Thank you Dave, Jack and KAt!!
*Janet/Ar* - Wanting to do too much is that a good answer for my weakness, Kat?
Dave - Kat, it will most likely grow beyond your wildest dreams!
Dave - It was beautiful, Mali, my buddy lives way up the hill from Boulder... can see a hundred miles from his back yard
Dave - To all that are new here... the general chatroom is generally a very friendly place to learn more... don't be afraid to ask lots of questions
Jack - I'm going to sign off now. I enjoyed this experience. KAT: thanks for setting this up. Dave: talk to you more in the future.
Bob R/CA - THANKS FOR YOUR TIME JACK, AND DAVE!!!
Erin - I have been a sub for three different districts and have at least interviewed twice for each one. I have my third interview for one of the districts on Friday. How can I get a position this time?
Kat/Kathleen - Jack, Thank YOU!!
Dave - Bye Jack... many thanks, partner... look for you later
Kat/Kathleen - This was a great sessiion!!! Good work all!!! and goodnight!
JJ/NM - Well I need to get prepared for the last 2 days at my current job!! It was great!!!!!
Erin - There sure seems to be quite a few teachers looking for work. Are things going to get better?
Dave - ERIN... no guarantees about getting the position, but if you do not, call one of the team members afterward and ask them how you can improve your interviewing and application skills... they may tell you more, at which point you should listen and take note
Jimmie/ESL/TX - Erin, go in confident, enthusiastic, and as if you were interviewing them (but be subtle about it, but it will add to the general picture of confidence). Be professional in dress and manner. Be sure that they know you are a team player and that you are concerned for the students and dedicated to doing a good job.
Jimmie/ESL/TX - Dave is right about no guarantees. None of us knows who else is interviewing. But at least you are being called for interviews. That shows that you have done something right.
Dave - Erin... don't get discouraged... keep trying
Erin - For the interview I have coming I have been very involved in one of the schools that are hiring Lack of enthusiasm is some critisism that I have recieved and have accepted constructively. I happen to be a laid back person. What can I do so that I won't look like I'm faking it?
Jimmie/ESL/TX - Remember, Erin, you and the school are looking for a good match. If you aren't a match for the school, you will be more miserable with the job than without it. So, think positive, smile, look them in the eyes, and go for it. :)
Dave - Erin, pick something that really excites you and share it if you have a chance
Dave - I have a stack of papers that I need to dig through, while still in the office... good night all and good hunting
