Mentor Chat 8pmE - Mentors Online will be conducted in a very informal format. New teachers are encouraged to log on with questions and concerns. Note that new messages appear at the top of the screen, unless you click on the backwards "R" in the left frame, causing new messages to appear from the bottom of the screen.
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Welcome to Teachers.Net Mentors Online!
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Linda, welcome! Go ahead and tell the mentors what you need help with.
mentorwizzlewolf - Linda, what do you need help with?
Linda - May I ask a question from a mentor?
mentorwizzlewolf - Sure, shoot Linda
Linda - I failed my Connecticut portfolio, and I am very upset!
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, are you a new teacher?
Linda - I really thhough it was very good. Can I ask it to be re-scored?
mentorwizzlewolf - I am not familiar with the Connecticut portfolio process. Is the like a teacher internship or your first year requirement?
Kathleen/Moderator - Hi Diane, welcome to Mentors Online.
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, we aren't necessarily familiar with individual state requirements. Tell us more.
Diane - thanks
mentorwizzlewolf - Linda, you need to contact your district or state Dept. of Ed. to find out the specifics of the scoring process.
Gumbo - hi,ya'll.........can't stay long......
Linda - You must submit a portfolio in yor second year of teaching. You can try three times and then it is over.
Kathleen/Moderator - Thanks for coming, mentors!
mentorwizzlewolf - Is this your first, second, or third try?
rampinot2 - OK i have a question. I am a new 7th grade lang. arts and Social studies teacher and i dont know where to start
Ginny - Hey, I'm here! A little slow as I wasn't watching my time.
Kathleen/Moderator - Mentors Online will be conducted in a very informal format. New teachers are encouraged to log on with questions and concerns. Note that new messages appear at the top of the screen, unless you click on the backwards "R" in the left frame, causing new messages to appear from the bottom of the screen.
Ginny - rampinot2, do you have a curriculum guide?
Magoo - ***puff, pant, wheeze*** sorry I'm late!
rampinot2 - yes but it is very very broad
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, who is the contact person for your BEST program?
Magoo - OOPS, sorry Ginny!! BRB....
Ginny - Me too Magoo, I was faxing in-services to Junction City and time just got by me!
Kathleen/Moderator - Mentors, I suggest you sign on with "mentor" before your name, or M/ if mentor is too long...
Magoo - Howzzat??
Magoo - MentorMagoo
Linda - I contacted the Best program. But my point is that these documents are very subjective.
Ginny - Okay, first in language arts, I'd get a sample writing and score it. Are your required to keep a portfolio of writing?
Kathleen/Moderator - Mentors, rampinot2 is a new 7th grade lang. arts and Social studies teacher and doesn't know where to start
MentorMagoo - I'm getting dizzy here.............
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, what was the response from the BEST people? Though "subjective," you are subjected to the decision of that body.
uni - sorry computer froze up!
Ginny-M - Okay, now I'm officially a mentor!
Linda - I know! That is what is bothering me.
Kathleen/Moderator - Mentors, you might log on with Mentor/ before your name (or M/ if the entire word mentor doesn't fit).
Linda - I feel my document deserved a better grade.
mentorwizzlewolf - Linda, do they give you a rubric or scoring rationale or something for you to follow?
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, did you "fail" in one specific area that can be re-done, or have you run out of opportunity?
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, is there an appeal process built in?
mentorwizzlewolf - Rampinot2, can you restate your question. I missed it.
Ginny-M - Sorry Linda, I logged off to put the M with my name and then forgot my color...I'll be right back
Linda - Yes. I'm going to meet with a Best scorer. she will give me a general idea of what I must do. But won't go into details.
MentorMagoo - Okay, I confess.....I don't know what BEST is.........
uni the Mentor - what is a "Best" scorer?
Linda - Well, then there is no one here that can help me?
Ginny Mentor - rampinot2 , can we take up again your thread?
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, you might check back here on Wed. this week. Hal Portner will be mentoring here. He is a former CT State Dept of Ed person and might have some advice.
Kathleen/Moderator - Mentors, just contribute when a question is within your area of expertise. Linda's question is very state-specific.
MentorMagoo - Sorry I can't help, Linda......
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, another place where you might find help from another new teacher who has gone through the process is on the CT chatboard clickable from http://teachers.net/states/
Linda - Thank you anyway!
Kathleen/Moderator - None of us will be able to answer ALL questions
Ginny Mentor - rampinot2, I was wondering if you had to have a portfolio for language arts.
Kathleen/Moderator - New teachers are encouraged to log on with questions and concerns.
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, otherwise, how are things going in the classroom? Do you feel well prepared for the responsibility?
Linda - I posted a message there. No one responded. I just want someone else to rescore my portfolio.
MentorMagoo - hi, MomBean
Kathleen/Moderator - Linda, come back here on Wed. when Hal Portner is online. Also check about an appeals process and the possibility of review by a different scorer.
MomBean - Hello!
Linda - Yes! I love to teach. This portfolio is not helping my teaching but rather is making me so nervous I can't concentrate on being creative.
Mentor Chat 8pmE - New teachers are encouraged to log on with questions and concerns. Don't be shy!
MentorMagoo - yo, Stanley!!!
Ginny Mentor - Greetings to all of you. This can be an interesting experience. Just ask any question. We may not know the answer, but we'll give it a try!
MomBean - I am having some general anxiety and issues getting started
MomBean - i've been doing a lot of getting to know the kids
Stanley,7th yr sub - Greetings, Magoo!![]()
MomBean - the teachers in my grade are divided in the way they handle things
uni the Mentor - what age MomBean?
Kathleen/Moderator - Thank you to all the mentors who are donating their time to such a worthwhile effort!
MomBean - second grade
MentorMagoo - MomBean, what grade do you teach??
mentorwizzlewolf - MomBean, what grade do you teach?
MomBean - second
Kathleen/Moderator - MomBean, tell us all about it, the mentors will contribute advice.
Ginny Mentor - MomBean, Level of concern is good--and it's natural for a beginning teacher.
MentorMagoo - ***mumbling to self*** I am slow tonight....
MomBean - i feel like they know what all the mini lessons are
MomBean - and they are so busy and assume i know things
MomBean - its ok magoo..im not far behind
MentorMagoo - MomBean, is this your first year with your very own classroom???
uni the Mentor - snd nstursl for experienced teachers with new students & psrentd esch yesr
Ginny Mentor - MomBean, in what way are they divided in the way they handle things and is it causing a problem?
uni the Mentor - sorry slipped fingers!
MomBean - i took over a class last jan for a teacher that passed away
Kathleen/Moderator - MomBean, sometimes it just takes a while to get a feel for where the students are...and coming back from Summer break they probably need review and settling in time.
MomBean - they do different reading...they do math in a different order
mentorwizzlewolf - "They" meaning the other teachers?
MentorMagoo - Oh, wow!! Tough way to get started!!
MomBean - i feel torn and as if i dont know how to start once i assess where theyre at
MomBean - yes
uni the Mentor - do you switch for any subjects - are the kids divided for math or reading levels?
MomBean - no
MentorMagoo - MomBean, how many other second grades are there in your bldg??
Stanley,7th yr sub - MomBean, when did you take over?
Mentor Chat 8pmE - New teachers are encouraged to log on with questions and concerns. You are as anonymous here as you wish to be, so log on with your questions. Mentors are here to help.
MomBean - 3..one is gifted
MomBean - so they are totally different
MomBean - this year they are mine from the start..last year i took over in jan for the gifted class..which i dont have anymore
MentorMagoo - Do the other second grades do things their own way, or do they do the same stuff??
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Mentors who have not yet sent their bios (paragraph) please send them to me kathleen@teachers.net
uni the Mentor - first of all don't try to plan for a regular class like the gifted (is it self-contained?) teacher does
mentorwizzlewolf - "They" meaning the other teachers?
MomBean - similar but not same
MomBean - right...that i got..
MomBean - i actually like these kids a lot..which i know is a good start
Ginny Mentor - Is there a rule that says you must teach the same material in the same way within grade levels? If not, don't worry and teach the way you teach best.
Kathleen/Moderator - a very good start!
MomBean - nope..well thats the thing
MomBean - dont know whats best
MentorMagoo - And, you said that the other 2nd teachers are not exactly helpful or sharing?? Or are they just assuming a bunch of stuff because you did the gifted kids last winter??
uni the Mentor - MomBean I was just saying that because I have the 6th grade self-contained and am terrifying our new 6th grade regular classroom teacher
MomBean - they assume
Kathleen/Moderator - If you're allowed to, find your own way. your students aren't duplicates of those in other classes. Refer to your curriculum, but be creative (if that is allowed)
MomBean - they will sort of help but leave me hanging on the follow up
Stanley,7th yr sub - Ginny, **PERFECT** comment, IMO!!
uni the Mentor - or just assuming you know cause you did teach last spring?
MomBean - ll give me random lessons..but i need to know things like what kinds of questions to ask during read alouds and stuff
uni the Mentor - give an example
MomBean - we can def. do that, kathleen..but im not 100% sure of the curriculum
MomBean - uni, see below
MomBean - we are encouraged to be creative, sure..i have to know what im being creative with!
Mentor Chat 8pmE - MomBean, you need to get a copy of the curriculum.
Ginny Mentor - Sometimes it is important to get to know your students and their needs. That won't happen over night. You can try one approach, and if that doesn't work, try another.
Mentor Chat 8pmE - rowlf, welcome to Mentors Online. What grade do you teach?
MomBean - i have a book with some things..
MomBean - i just feel overwhelmed
uni the Mentor - you don't have a state standards or local curriculum you are required to follow?
MentorMagoo - You should be able to get a printed, written down copy of the curric. from somebody, to make sure you are covering everything.
Ginny Mentor - Thank you Stanley!
MomBean - i do hve books...but they are overwhelming
uni the Mentor - many states have them posted on line
MomBean - i think i also need to convince myself that one day at a time is ok
Kathleen/Moderator - MomBean, it's natural to feel that way, don't be discouraged by feeling overwhelmed. At the beginning of each of my 28 years, I felt overwhelmed during the first few weeks.
MomBean - ere are a LOT of seasoned teachers in my school
MentorMagoo - I get the feeling that you feel like you are drowning, MomBean???
MomBean - YES MAGOO!
MomBean - i have the least experience in my school
Mentor Chat 8pmE - New teachers are encouraged to log on with questions and concerns. We have a LOT of mentor power here, need YOU.
uni the Mentor - I understand that MomBean - our curriculum for local county is more than 6 inchess thick --and not totally in line with state requirements
Ginny Mentor - I have a suggestion. Look over the curriculum and think about your talents. Start with something you feel very secure about. That will give you a knowledge base.
MomBean - its great because they know a lot..but they arent helping me get to things myself
MentorMagoo - One DAY at a time??Why doncha start with one HOUR at a time and build from there....might not feel as overwhelming.........
mentorwizzlewolf - Mombean, take it one step at a time, one day at a time. Get to know your kids and study bits of the curriculum as you go. Pretty soon you will feel much more comfortable.
MomBean - eek, uni
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Least experience, but newest level of enthusiasm and outlook.
MomBean - our routine is coming into place..one teacher said thats a great first step
MentorMagoo - It has been my experience that the veteran teachers often just plain FORGET what it's like to be the new kid on the block.
Stanley,7th yr sub - Feeling "supersaturated" isn't unusual -- cf. Kathleen's comment!
MomBean - YUP
mentorwizzlewolf - It is!!!
Kathleen/Moderator - Where are all the new teachers? Come one, newbies, join us. This is fun and informal.
MomBean - am i the only one? wow..thought i was just being selfish
MomBean - but im loving the affirmations..thank you
MentorMagoo - Listen, it's very early in the year....as long as nobody gets hurt, it won't matter if it takes a bit to 'settle'.
Ginny Mentor - I was wondering if you felt a bit overwhelmed by all the attention! (haha)
Kathleen/Moderator - MomBean, are all of your issues related to curriculum implementation? How is classsroom management going?
MentorMagoo - OH, MOMBEAN, you are getting paranoid here, dearheart!!! NO, you are not being selfish, you silly.
Stanley,7th yr sub - Ginny, **TERRIFIC** comment re seeking out your comfort zone![Kind of like doing what you know FIRST when taking an exam, no?
]
Kathleen/Moderator - Good point, Magoo, no one will be hurt if you take a bit of time to get settled.
MomBean - lol
MomBean -
MomBean - kathleen, YES
MomBean - my management is pretty held down (as of now)
Kathleen/Moderator - Good for you, MomBean! That is important!
MomBean - im not letting the kids get an inch of me now..
MentorMagoo - Okay, MB, what part of the second grade curric do you absolutely LOVE the best??
MomBean - so i can think about how im going to carry things out
MomBean - i like the maps...
Ginny Mentor - For language arts it is very good to take a writing sample from the first of the year. If you haven't done that, you might want to .
mentorwizzlewolf - Classroom management is more than half the battle...good for you!
Mentor Chat 8pmE - All of this collective wisdom and experience...now we need some NEW TEACHERS to log on.
MomBean - i had them write
MentorMagoo - OOOO, good idea, Ginny!!
MomBean - we are writing tomorrow..maybe ill have them put it on paper so i can look at it more
Kathleen/Moderator - Yes, concentrate on establishing where those kids are NOW, BEFORE you work your magic.
Ginny Mentor - I wonder if we have some lurkers out there...come on in. We might even be able to find some snikerdooles...or something.
MomBean - mm snickerdoodles...now im lured
Kathleen/Moderator - MomBean, and that will help you understand where to go next with them.
Ginny Mentor - Make sure you file their first efforts in writing so the kids will have a comparer at the end of the year!
MomBean - i actually took some notes on fridays writing
MentorMagoo - Okay, you like maps.........you could maybe start with that........then you won't be nervous, because you like maps.......you can sneak in some math (how many blocks is it from Janie's house to school?), and some writing (they could write a couple of sentences about what Janie might see if she walked to school)...that sort of thing.........maybe??
MomBean - spelling is a big issue, as is sentence structure and paragraphing
Ginny Mentor - Yes, you got the message even though I misspelled it!!!!
Stanley,7th yr sub - Hey, Magoo, that's MY line -- complimenting Ginny!ROTFL!! However, once AGAIN, Ginny hit pay dirt with encouraging the writing sample!
MomBean - good idea magoo..
MentorMagoo - I probably should 'fess up to MB here and tell her that I'm not a 'real' teacher, I am a substitute (elem.) starting my 9th year..........
MomBean - i subbed before getting offered my job
MomBean - best experience
Ginny Mentor - http://www.geocities.com/ginnyks/blankmaps.html At that site you will find a list of free blackline masters...it really helps to have good maps for mapwork!
MentorMagoo - Oh, fiddle, don't mess with paragraphs, etc. this early in the year.
MomBean - nice
MentorMagoo - The kids are barely back from summer.....they won't remember what a noun is for at least a week
MomBean - see? should i start there? lol
MomBean - have magazines..we can go over that and cut pics out
Ginny Mentor - http://www.geocities.com/ginnyks/summer.html I'm a state trainer, so I also have a link page for all the areas of social studies...each leader picked out the best sites on the internet for their area.
MomBean - you are an amazing resource!
MentorMagoo - Y'know, this map thing.........you could make a map of your town........have the kids label the school, the grocery store they go to, etc.............you could make up math probs with it---if Stanley walks 3 blocks to school, and then he walks 6 blocks to the Boys Club, how many blocks does he walk all together?
Stanley,7th yr sub - MomBean, you mentioned what questions to ask during read alouds. Basic PREDICTING might be a good place to start. What do the rest of you think?
MomBean - yup! i had my kids make an imaginary or real place last year with map, itenerary (sp?), etc
Ginny Mentor - How about using the magazines for sequencing a story. Pick out pictures that belong in a certain order. We do that for comics too. It is fun to watch the kids figure out what frame comes first, second, etc.
MomBean - goood
MomBean - im copying and pasting..hope you dont mind
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Send to me kathleen@teachers.net. Deadline for entries, Friday at 9:30 pmE. ONLY THOSE NEW TEACHERS WHO PARTICDIPATE IN MENTORS ONLINE ARE ELIGIBLE> But you don't have to buy anything.
MentorMagoo - Stanley, that's a good idea! Could do that with magazine pics/photos...........make up some "What Happens Next?" stories.........
Kathleen/Moderator - All new teachers who chat here during Mentors Online week will be eligible (if they enter) for a drawing to give away a copy of Educating Esme, Diary of a Teacher's First Year by Esme Codell. You must log on, then e-mail me with FIRST YEAR in the subject line, provide your screen name and real name, e-mail address.
MomBean - thats almost a center, too
Ginny Mentor - Have you looked at all the great lessons on Teachers net? They are wonderful.
Kathleen/Moderator - The transcript of this chat will be archived.
MomBean - whats your email kathleen?
Stanley,7th yr sub - MomBean, I BELIEVE Kathleen said there would be transcripts of this posted to the archives, though that does normally take at least a few days…
uni the Mentor - jey I have 6th graders forgetting what a pronoun is
MentorMagoo - Or, maybe, you could put the kids in small groups, give them a commonly known story/fairy tale, have each group WRITE (there, you get the writing in!) what happens first, second, third, etc.
Mentor Chat 8pmE - All new teachers who chat here during Mentors Online week will be eligible (if they enter) for a drawing to give away a copy of Educating Esme, Diary of a Teacher's First Year by Esme Codell. You must log on, then e-mail me with FIRST YEAR in the subject line, provide your screen name and real name, e-mail address. Send to me kathleen@teachers.net. Kathleen/Moderator - Teachers.Net searchable Lesson Bank http://teachers.net/lessons . Just type in a topic and voila!
Kathleen/Moderator - send entries to kathleen@teachers.net
uni the Mentor - there are many lesson banks on line as well as here
MentorMagoo - I love thinking up lesson plans.........wish somebody would pay me to do that!!
Ginny Mentor - Yes, I was just there a few minutes ago. I plan to recommend it as a resource at an inservice. That's what made me think of it.
uni the Mentor - me. too, Magoo - I love writing curriculum, integrating themes
MentorMagoo - MomBean, what state are you in? (And you can't say 'state of confusion')
MomBean - whew..
Ginny Mentor - Magoo, me too. I would like to have a job just writing CREATIVE lessons!
MomBean - NY
Ginny Mentor - What size is your school?
MomBean - its small for NY
MomBean - 3-4 classes on a grade..
MentorMagoo - "New York, New York, a wonderful town, the Bronx is up and the Battery's down, the people ride in a hole in the ground..."
Ginny Mentor - I wondered. Are you in the city?
MomBean - lol
MomBean - oh and did mention we have to deal with 9/11
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Any mentors who have not sent their one paragraph bios, please send them to me this evening kathleen@teachers.net
MentorMagoo - sorry, I tend to relate things to musicals.......or food.........
MomBean - im in queens...one of the 5 boroughs
MomBean - lol its ok
Kathleen/Moderator - If you're here helping, you're a mentor
Ginny Mentor - Hi Becky
MomBean - but im in a suburban area..near long island..
uni the Mentor - I think all of us need to deal with 911 in one way or another
MentorMagoo - Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, ummmmm...Staten Island??
Kathleen/Moderator - Hi Becky! Welcome to Mentors Online! What grade do you teach, and what can we help with?
Becky - I teach third grade, what would be appropriate for third graders to do for 9-11?
MentorMagoo - hi, Becky!!!
Kathleen/Moderator - true, uni.
Kathleen/Moderator - true, uni.
MentorMagoo - Becky, was your area greatly affected by Sept. 11??
MomBean - impressive, magoo..
Stanley,7th yr sub - Can I straddle the fence between mentoring & questioning?[Once outside of subbing, I've LOTS of questions…
]
MentorMagoo - I think that makes a difference........out here, we barely got any news after the first month or so........
Becky - No, I am in Montana
MomBean - wow!
Kathleen/Moderator - Becky, our webzine has some suggestions about how to deal with 9/11/02, but I'd like to add that it would be a good idea to consult with the students.
MentorMagoo - ***hey, MB, did I get 'em all??***
MentorMagoo - Hoo, ha, Becky, I am in Washington---on the WA/Idaho state line..........
MomBean - ya did! excellent!
Ginny Mentor - I think things done for 9/11 need to be as positive as possible. Especially because of the little ones.
mentorwizzlewolf - Yes, we have to deal with it, but it is OK to deal with it in our own way. Even quiet contemplation is just fine. It doesn' t have to be a big show.
uni the Mentor - http://neahin.org/programs/schoolsafety/september11/materials/lessonhome.htm
Kathleen/Moderator - Let the students lead the way to what is best for them, listen to them. When you leave here, check out http://www.teachers.net/gazette for several articles, resources, even a poem.
Stanley,7th yr sub - Becky, my favorite site [a barrio K-5 location] will just be observing a moment of silence before entering class Wed.
MomBean - we are doing a message of hope with our younger kisd
Carol - Becky where in Montana
MomBean - kids
MentorMagoo - Becky, did your principal say anything about what the whole school was going to do??
MomBean - talking about feelings about what happened
Becky - Kalispell
uni the Mentor - the NEA site has some excellent ideas and connects to AMerican Red cross site
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Hi Carol, welcome to Mentors Online! What grade do you teach, and how can we help?
uni the Mentor - http://neahin.org/programs/schoolsafety/september11/materials/lessonhome.htm
MomBean - we got lessons from our local hospital..
MentorMagoo - hi, Carol!!
Deadline for entries, Friday at 9:30 pmE. ONLY THOSE NEW TEACHERS WHO PARTICDIPATE IN MENTORS ONLINE ARE ELIGIBLE> But you don't have to buy anything.
Ginny Mentor - Greetings Carol
uni the Mentor - our district left it up to individual teachers
MomBean - eek uni..
uni the Mentor - personally I felt that was poorly done
MentorMagoo - I've been to Kalispell.........they have 2 seasons there, winter and August.........
Stanley,7th yr sub - I've a question for all the contracted classroom Ts: If you could relive your 1st yr with your OWN class, WHAT would you do differently?
mentorwizzlewolf - Our school is pushing a lot of patriotism, red, white, and blue, etc. I am not doing that. We are creating a "Celebrate Life" board which the students write what they love about their lives.
Ginny Mentor - Do any of you new teachers have a mentor assigned to you?
Ginny Mentor - Hi Gigi
MentorMagoo - The school I'll be subbing in on Wed. has not planned anything thus far, which I think is tacky.
Gigi - Hi!!
uni the Mentor - Well Mom you are closer - but I teach in a school filled with Muslim children - not good planning to my way of thinking!!!!
MomBean - wow!!!!
MentorMagoo - hi, Gigi!!
Mentor Chat 8pmE - hmmm, relive my first year? I'd access better information and support about classroom management.
MomBean - NO ginny..
Ginny Mentor - I'll be presenting on Wed..no school here...inservice day.
Carol - Pre- K and been teaching for 10 years just checking out the site right now. But the big question is how involved does one get in pushing curriculum down lower and lower
MentorMagoo - WOW, uni!!
Gigi - this is my first time in the room
Becky - I am a second year teacher, with a mentor
uni the Mentor - not the Muslim children - I mean no guidelines - would be very tacky to do all red white and blue
Mentor Chat 8pmE - Hi Gigi! Welcome to Mentors Online! What grade do you teach and how can we help during the last 8 minutes of this mentoring session?
MomBean - right..uni, where are you teaching?
Gigi - is there a topic of discussion
uni the Mentor - indiana
uni the Mentor - university town
MomBean - ah..
Ginny Mentor - Gigi, just whatever you as a new teacher would like to ask or discuss
Kathleen/Moderator - Gigi, the topic is what you wish to discuss. We're here to apply our many years of experience to your needs.
Gigi - oh!! I am actually trying to get into a teaching job as yet
MomBean - we have a new teacher person in the school but...i dont know who it is this year
uni the Mentor - yes, we actually have cultural crossroads here even in the corn field (more likely soybeans!!!)
MomBean - and since i took over for 6 months, they think im not a new teacher but this is my real first year
Ginny Mentor - Becky, are you finding your mentor helpful?
MentorMagoo - I think it's tacky to not remember that other countries lost people, too, even tho the attack was apparently aimed at the USA. We need to remember EVERYBODY.........
Gigi - and I am looking for information
Kathleen/Moderator - Gigi, are there many openings?
MomBean - true, magoo
Becky - yes, she is great
Ginny Mentor - Hi Cheese
Kathleen/Moderator - Gigi, what info in particular?
MomBean - gigi, where are you located?
Gigi - I am in New Jersy
MentorMagoo - MB, you need to make more noise, I think.............take a deep breath and tell somebody that hey, this IS your 'first year'.......
Ginny Mentor - I think the best thing a new teacher can do is find someone willing to mentor if someone hasn't been assigned.
Becky - our school is making flags of all the countries that had a lost
Gigi - I have my education from another country
Kathleen/Moderator - Hi Cheese, welcome to the last 6 mintues of Mentors Online for this evening. We'll have sessions every evening this week, same time and place.
MentorMagoo - hi, cheese
Gigi - also have some teaching experience in my coutry
MomBean - youre not the first to say that, magoo
MentorMagoo - Becky, I like that idea!!
Gigi - t in US things are different
Kathleen/Moderator - Teachers.Net Beginning Teachers Chatboard and mailring: http://teachers.net/mentors/beginning_teachers/
Stanley,7th yr sub - Anyone have an answer to MomBean's question about what to do when you're not PERCEIVED as being "new" -- all because you've been there in a different capacity??
MentorMagoo - MB, I am famous in certain circles for having a big mouth...........I can give you lessons (free) if you want
Gigi - so i am just exlporing all possiblities
Kathleen/Moderator - Gigi, have you become certified in the U.S.?
Kathleen/Moderator - At 9pmE the Reading Recovery group will arrive for their chat...
MomBean - magoo, i would take you up on that!!!!
Gigi - no I am taking the Praxis test in November
Becky - Well thanks everyone, good night!!
uni the Mentor - I wish I did have an answer - I had rather the same experienced - took over in January - was an "older" new teacher and everyone assumes I have 20 yrs of teaching LOL
Kathleen/Moderator - If not perceived as new and wish to be, express that at the next faculty meeting, and ask for support.
Ginny Mentor - Just start asking more questions MomBean and people will begin to realize that you are really new. You could even start with "Since I have never done this before, I wonder...."
Gigi - I am glad I found this place and get a chance to connect to other teachers
Kathleen/Moderator - If not perceived as new and wish to be, express that at the next faculty meeting, and ask for support.
MentorMagoo - MB, meet me in the chatroom some night.......I'll bring the snickerdoodles.........we'll set up a curriculum for you
uni the Mentor - that was 7 years ago and finally feel they are right!
MomBean - ginny, i say that..they look at me like im nuts..
Kathleen/Moderator - National Association of Beginning Teachers http://www.beginningteachers.org/
MomBean - magoo..you name the time and im there!
MentorMagoo - Kathleen is so cool!! I'd probably just stand up and holler, "HEY! I don't have a clue here, I need help!"
Kathleen/Moderator - Beginning Teachers Toolbox: http://www.inspiringteachers.com
wizzlewolf - Look for a teacher that you admire for her teaching style and ask them for help.
Stanley,7th yr sub - uni, your experience will likely be mine: I anticipate having my own classroom next yr -- in a different locale!
Kathleen/Moderator - Any mentors who have personal websites, please post your url now.
Kathleen/Moderator - Good advice, wizzlewolf.
MomBean - everyone just seems tooooo busy
Gigi - when do you meet next
MomBean - or eager to go home..
Kathleen/Moderator - LOL Magoo
MentorMagoo - Bye, Becky!! Don't freeze up there!
Kathleen/Moderator - Gigi, tomorrow, here, 8pmE
Stanley,7th yr sub - THANKS for the URLs, Kathleen!
