Mentor Grace/IL - Hi Shelley, are you here for the new teacher chat?
Shelley M - yes I am
Shelley M - Besides student teaching, today was my 8th day - does that make me new?
Mentor wizzle - Hi EVERYBODY!
Mentor Grace/IL - Isabelle, that's great. Hi Wizzle & Fishes.
Fishes82-Edu.stu - Hello
Mentor Grace/IL - My, such lovely colors this evening!
Mentor wizzle - So new teachers, hows it goin so far???
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I actually got on at the right time-I'm in a diff. time zone and didn't even think about that last night! Oops
Mentor wizzle - Yes, Colorful Thursday....
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Well, wizzle-I said last night-I feel like a chicken running around with my head cut off!!
Mentor wizzle - I think Monday was mostly BLACK!
Mentor Grace/IL - Looks like we have lots of student teachers tonight. Are you all from the same university?
Mentor wizzle - Hey Hey Hey Mentor Magoo!
MagooMentor - Hello!! I swear, if this computer went any slower, it'd be in reverse!!
MagooMentor - (((((wizzle)))))
Fishes82-Edu.stu - i'm just in an education classes at school...i still have at least a year left before i student teach
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I don't think so!
Mentor Grace/IL - Hi Magoo. Yes, my computer is slow this evening too.
Shelley 4th - It's going well, but I wish I a clone
Mentor wizzle - Isabelle, yes I remember. I didn't want to tell you this but I have been teaching a long time and there are days when I run like a chicken too!
MagooMentor - Isabelle, have you found your head yet???
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I'm currently student teaching-in my 2nd week and started full time yesterday already
Mentor wizzle - Fishes, are you getting excited about teaching?
Shelley 4th - nice grammar, can you tell I'm tired. It's only after 5:00
Missy stu. tea. 1st - Hello!
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - yes, I waved the white flag today in surrender, and told my co-op teacher that I NEED help in planning!!
MagooMentor - Okay, does "Shelley 4th" mean that Shelley teaches 4th or is in her 4th year of school, or came in 4th in the Miss America Pagent, or what???
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I'm glad to here that wizzle-I mean that its not just me!!
Mentor wizzle - Isabelle, that is GREAT. It is good to ask for help!
Mentor Grace/IL - Hi Missy, I'm retired from first grade. How is it going?
MagooMentor - I am nosy and would like to know where everyone is from........I am in Washington state.........
Missy stu. tea. 1st - Today was day 10!
Shelley 4th - yeah, I'm Mrs. Washington, lol. I teach 4th grade, first year, day 8
buffy/sped - Hi
Mentor wizzle - Isabelle, it is part of the job. Even when you get experience there are always new challenges coming your way.
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I am in Minn.
Missy stu. tea. 1st - We had a party. Going good so far.
Fishes82-Edu.stu - Michigan
Mentor wizzle - FLORIDA, Land of sun and low teacher pay!! LOL
MagooMentor - Hi, buffers!!! Did today go better for you??
Mentor wizzle - Fishes, what part of Michigan?
Mentor Grace/IL - Isabelle, I'm a native Minnesotan. In what part of the state are you?
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - that makes it fun wizzle right?!!!
buffy/sped - It went well ... Only got cussed once!
Fishes82-Edu.stu - near grand rapids
MagooMentor - I've got a sis-in-law in Michigan.......
Missy stu. tea. 1st - can you give me any advice?
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Northern MN-where teachers lose their jobs thanks to Ventura!!
Jen24 - i have a question
Shelley 4th - magoo, i'm in sw WA, are you close?
MagooMentor - Buffy, was the cussing done by your aide or a kid??
Mentor wizzle - Isabelle, yes fun after the running is over. You hate the stress, but when it is all over you really enjoy the accomplishment.
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - yes Jen? go for it!
Mentor Grace/IL - Isabelle, I came from Clay County, over near the Red River.
buffy/sped - I told the non-listener today that I wasn't going to repeat myself and if he missed it then he could write why and what he was suppose to do
MagooMentor - Shelley, gimme a minute....SW.....nope, I'm in the SE part....the UGLY side, near the Idaho/Oregon line.
Mentor wizzle - Fishes, I am originally from Detroit.
buffy/sped - lol Magoo.... The kid
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - wizzle-it makes the day go by so fast, and you don't have time to realize your hungry or tired
Mentor Grace/IL - Hi Jen, ask your question. What grade level?
buffy/sped - Not to mention wanting to cuss the aide out myself...
Shelley 4th - ah magoo, my dh hunts in Polmeroy (sp?)
MagooMentor - YAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYY, BUFFY !!!!!!!!! YOU GO, GIRL !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mentor wizzle - Buffy, that is good! It is a start!
Mentor wizzle - Jen, what is your question?
buffy/sped - He caught on quick today..
Jen24 - 3rd
Jen24 - 3rd
Mentor wizzle - Buffy, remember you are looking for little successes.
MagooMentor - Shelly, it's 'Pomeroy' and I am about 30 minutes east of there. Pomeroy is one of those towns where, if you sneeze, you miss it, 'cause your eyes are closed.
Beth/1 - Hi everyone!
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I had success today
Jen24 - i need to find a site on spelling tests
buffy/sped - She screamed and yelled at one boy and told him that he was not coming to class tomorrow.. That he would go to the 1st grade room b/c he didn't know how to act (a different one not the non-listener)
Shelley 4th - I was wondering if anyone used Scott Foresman for reading and how do manage everything in it?
Missy stu. tea. 1st - What is the beat way to motivate a child who does not care?
Mentor Grace/IL - Hi Beth, Any first grade questions?
buffy/sped - Pomeroy, where?
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Missy-find things that interest them
MagooMentor - I always feel the need to confess to the group........I am not a 'real' teacher, I am a Professional Substitute, in my 9th year. Prefer elem., and absolutely LOVE 4th grade
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Good for you Magoo-my mother-in-law is too!!
Fishes82-Edu.stu - i'm not a teacher either...not yet anyway
Beth/1 - A question. We are starting after school tutoring for our lower students. I have hands on math on Tursdays. I want to start with # sense, counting, shapes, etc. Anything else I need for beginning numbers/math? Where can I look?
MagooMentor - Missy, a whip and a chair.......oh, no, not anymore.......sorry!
Mentor Grace/IL - Missy, sometimes that's hard to do. First you have to figure out WHY he doesn't care. Maybe he's feeling bewildered and using "I don't care" as a cover-up.
MagooMentor - too much caffine again, Kathleen will skin me.........I will try to behave tonight.......
buffy/sped - Did they bring the cheesecake??
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Jen-what about spellig tests??
MagooMentor - Buffy---Pomeroy, Washington
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Edhelper can make word finds, crossword puzzles, etc. if you put in your words
buffy/sped - oh
Mentor wizzle - Jen, you want a website that has spelling tests? spelling curriculum?? Can you be more specific.
Jen24 - sorry i got kicked off
Mentor Grace/IL - Beth, I think you need to assess what they already know and go from there.
MagooMentor - Jan brought cheesecake last night and ATE THE WHOLE THING, which I think was very, very tacky........
Jen24 - i am student teaching, tomorrow will be my 5th day
Mentor/Hal - Hi all, sorry I'm late
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I am right now too Jen!!!
Missy stu. tea. 1st - Actually, the child is not the problem.
Jen24 - i am giving a spelling test
Shelley 4th - I have a management question
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - what is then Missy??
MagooMentor - ooooooo, a REALLY nifty place to make puzzles is puzzlemaker.com It's part of Discovery and it's more fun!!
Beth/1 - I'd love to assess them. But, (I know, excuses!!!) I'll have kids from my class plus the 2 other 1st grades. Potentially 21 students in all and only have 1 hour with them.
Missy stu. tea. 1st - What is the best way to motivate parents!!!
Jen24 - i need the test paper
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - that's what edhelper.com does too!!
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - that's a tough one missy!!!
Mentor wizzle - OK Jen, can you be more specific about spelling tests...Do you need spelling curriculum or just tests, I don't understand.
Jen24 - i looked on some clip art sites
Mentor Grace/IL - Spelling test questions. You can print out some assessments from my website that will tell you where your students are breaking down. Spelling is a really developmental subject.
MagooMentor - Jen, take deep breaths, there IS life after student teaching.......
buffy/sped - lol Missy... Good Luck
Jen24 - like a big tropical bird they could color in when they were done
Mentor wizzle - Shelley, what is your question?
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - We have agendas-the students write in them everyday and parents have to initial them for students to earn points
buffy/sped - Grace, where is your site??
Mentor wizzle - Missy, promise them FOOD.
MagooMentor - Buffy---did you say that your aide screamed at a kid again today??
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - But there is NO life during student teaching!!!!
Beth/1 - Any 1st grade teachers out there who can answer a curriculum question?
Mentor Grace/IL - Buffy, it's http://www.spellangtree.org.
buffy/sped - Yes, and told them that she would not let them come to class tomorrow
Missy stu. tea. 1st - FOOD! Why didn't I think of that!
Shelley 4th - During writers workshop and reading groups, what do you do with the 2 students who can't work independently, even though they are capable?
Mentor wizzle - Beth, what is the question?
MagooMentor - Isabelle, I know a bunch of teachers who use that agenda system, and they like it and the kids like earning the points, and the parents have no reason to complain if they don't know what's going on.
buffy/sped - Thanks Grace
Mentor Grace/IL - There is a link to the Site Map. You'll find the assessments there.
buffy/sped - Oh good I will go look after here
Holley - Hello all
Mentor wizzle - Shelley, do you have any kind of routine of consequences for off task behavior?
Mentor/Hal - hi, Holly
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Magoo-we also have parents initial homework assignments
MagooMentor - Buffy, I'm going out on a limb here, but if it was/were (I'm never sure about that one) me, I'd start documenting like crazy on a daily basis. Who she hollers at, why, when, what the students' reaction is, etc. Of course, you don't tell HER you're doing this.......but it will give you ammunition......
Mentor Grace/IL - Hi Holley, what grade level?
Shelley 4th - I use token economy. They quietly don't work, so I don't catch them off task easily.
Holley - is there a defined topic or just toss out a line and see what bites?
buffy/sped - She told him that he would have to go to the 1st grade class like it was her place... My mouth just dropped
Mentor/Hal - Toss away, Holley
MagooMentor - Holley, just dive in and we'll promise to not let you sink!
Holley - I'm just looking to see what I can learn, that's all!
Beth/1 - I am having a hard time with what to teach during my Language time (I have spelling & handwriting down) it's the McGraw Hill stuff and Writing. McGraw has sooo much stuff... Are we expected to get thru it all?
Mentor wizzle - Shelley, sit them next to you for a little "proximinal control". They will be less likely to fool around and/or will stay on task more often.
MagooMentor - Buffy, you gotta talk to the princ. about this lady. She may well have some sort of horrible personal problem, but she must NOT be allowed to do that. A r
MagooMentor - well, I guess I hit the wrong button........
Shelley 4th - whizzle, that is exactly what I told one of them today, he would have to sit on the floor by my reading group
MagooMentor - A 'regular' teacher (as opposed to an aide) would be called on the carpet for such behavior.
Jen24 - my chat's won't update i think i am doing this wrong
Holley - I have a unique situation. I am teaching 1st grade in a charter school for Somalian students. Their academic background is varied and I'm not sure how to manage behavior with 25 kids in a room the size of a bathroom! lol
buffy/sped - I did talk to princ today and she just shook her head and said that she didn't know what was wrong with her
Mentor Grace/IL - Beth, most reading programs include more than teachers can handle. You have to decide what activities will accomplish what you want to do and toss out the rest.
MagooMentor - wizzle, you sure know a buncha big words! 'proximinal'.......
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - wow Holley!!!!
Mentor wizzle - Shelley, well you did the right thing. I would have one on one side of me and the other one on the other side. I would eye them like an eagle. Pretty soon, if they started to work, I would eventually loosen the "leash".
Holley - yes I was impressed by that word too!
Beth/1 - Good! LOL! I was feeling there was no way to fit it all in!
Shelley 4th - thanks wizzle, at least I know i am on the right track. time for dinner, bye
MagooMentor - Buffy, then tell the Princ. that you have decided to document, because if a PARENT comes down on YOU about this, you want to cover your...a-hem.....backside. See what she does.
Mentor wizzle - Magoo, don't be impressed. I am not even sure if I spelled it right, but you get the idea....
Jen24 - do i just keep hitting up[date
Holley - Jen, I have to do that to keep up as well
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - To the rest of you newbies....How much time do you spend in plannin geach day??
Mentor wizzle - Thats a UNIVERSITY word. I remember it in EDU 101
Mentor Grace/IL - Jen, type in your message, then click "Update."
MagooMentor - I would like to be a bug on the wall in a classroom of wizzle's.......I think I would learn a buncha stuff!!
Shelley 4th - I think i plan in my sleep and every waking hour
Mentor/Hal - Jen, or just hit enter
Beth/1 - I am a newbie and spend about 1.5-2 hours. My lessons for Reading are already done (just nee to organize) and Math is pretty complete, too.
Mentor wizzle - Magoo, A bug on the wall?? You would have to tell one my kids to move over....They bounce off the walls all the time!!
Holley - At least you can sleep Shelley...I can't sleep because my brain won't STOP thinking about it!
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Good Shelley-I thought I was the only one!!!
Mentor wizzle - Beth, do you teach all the subjects?
MagooMentor - Student teachering is a bear...you have NO life, you get NO sleep....
Jen24 - my computer is sooo slow
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I think my toughest problem is that my co-op. teacher doesn't use the basal, so I'm having to come up with stuff on my own, but being sure to hit the concepts that are in the basal-VERY TOUGH!!!
Beth/1 - I agree. St. teaching is hard! You are "cooking in someone else's kithcen!"
Holley - Wait Magoo...this is my 3rd year and I still don't sleep! lol
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - And what really sucks, is I am supposed to be working on my honors' thesis, and can't get my license until I finish that-at this rate, I won't get it done!!!
Shelley 4th - magoo, finishing your masters, student teaching, and taking of family with two little ones is more than a bear!
Beth/1 - Sorry about my typing. I can spell, just not type very well!
buffy/sped - I think about school all the time..
Jen24 - anyways i need a spelling test sheet
Mentor wizzle - Isabelle, you must know student teaching is very tough because it is like jumping through a big hoop. When you get your own class it will be more fun.
Mentor Grace/IL - Beth, I like that comparison -- cooking in someone else's kitchen.
Jen24 - can i get those on line
MagooMentor - Here's a trick for getting to sleep---I use it when I am stressed or worried about something: mentally, take yourself on a trip. I almost always go to my Grandma's farm in Indiana. I walk myself thru each room, I look at everything in the rooms, etc. I wander out to the gardens, etc. and pretty soon I am asleep.
Jen24 - nt a picture on the side that they can color in
buffy/sped - When wizzle??
Holley - I'm not sure Jen
Shelley 4th - I love having my own class now. I am tired, but am enjoying my students so much, they are all mine!
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - good idea magoo!!
Beth/1 - a friend of mine told me that. Use their spices and do what they would do. You will have your own kitchen soon!
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - I can't wait to have my own class!!
Mentor Grace/IL - Jen, are you thinking of setting up an individualized spelling program (need test sheet)?
HI - JEN
MagooMentor - ***preparing padded room for Shelley, who is on 'overdrive'***
Mentor wizzle - Jen, I would love to help you but I don't understand what you mean by spelling sheet. You have to have a word list before you make the test.....(?)
Mentor/Hal - 'Lo, Hi
Jen24 - yes
buffy/sped - I do enjoy the kids ... If I can control my aide and complete my Graduate classes
Shelley 4th - lol today wiped me out, but I still want to go back tomorrow!
Mentor wizzle - Buffy, when what? I think I missed something here.
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - brb
Jen24 - yes they know there words
buffy/sped - You said that getting your own class is fun.. And I asked when does it get fun/
Mentor Grace/IL - Jen, you can also go to my website, http://www.spellangtree.org. Click on "Free Resources" and you'll find a treatise on setting up an individualized program.
Jen24 - i need the actual sheet for them to put their answers on
Mentor wizzle - Jen, so the kids have a word list, now you have to make a spelling test...Is that the question?
MagooMentor - Isabelle, thanks--the farm is long gone, just corn fields there now. My Grandma died 23 years ago, my Grandpa 30 years ago. But.....the memories are GOOD ones.
Jen24 - great thanks
Jen24 - yes
Mentor wizzle - Buffy, I MAKE it fun. No matter how long you teach, there will always be things to tire you out and make you grumpy. You just have to LOVE it so much, you make yourself laugh. I have a blast in my room even when the wolves are at the door.
MagooMentor - Jen, can't you just have them write their test on the lined paper at school?? Or is this a special situation??
Missy stu. tea. 1st - Can any one think of any resorce musts for early childhood teaching?
MagooMentor - I have a blast in a classroom ESPECIALLY when wolves are at the door
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Jen-why can't they use regular paper?
Jen24 - i wanted a fun picture on it
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - just use clip art
Mentor wizzle - Jen, hold on a minute. I am looking.
Mentor Grace/IL - Missy, I'm very partial to multi-sensory activities for spelling, reading, and math.
Jen24 - my co op wanted me to make one
buffy/sped - I play games with my kids and make jokes with them and my Aide constantly makes comments about the games... She does it to other teachers too... My landlord works at our school and is my best friend's mom.. Well my aide went and told her that I play too many games and I am too nice to them
Jen24 - my co op wanted me to make one
D.D - HI
buffy/sped - If it wasn't for my aide then I would have a great year!!
MagooMentor - Jen--find a picture you like. Trace/copy it on a piece of plain paper. Then paste the plain paper to the top/bottom/whatever of the lined paper and run copies--viola'
Mentor Grace/IL - Jen, "fun" stuff doesn't always get the job done. Sometimes it distracts the students.
D.D - HELLO!!!!
Jen24 - clip art isn't programed in my computer
Jen24 - the one's i found on the internet were actual pictures
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - That is true Grace-especially students with LD
buffy/sped - I mix games with the book stuff... so it is not all games
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Jen, you can always get clip art off the net
MagooMentor - YOU GOTTA MUZZLE THAT AIDE, BUFFERS Where are you again?? I am not scheduled to sub Monday---I could come over and help you. :) She is annoying me and I don't even know her!!
Jen24 - we are doing island things this week
buffy/sped - I teach in Ohio
MagooMentor - Generation Gap.....I am used to making my own stuff......I keep forgetting computers can do everything but flush the toilet.....
Jen24 - we dresses up today lie islanders and made fruit salad, everyone brought in a fruit
Mentor wizzle - Well Jen, I found oodles of "Spelling Test Generators" but they are not free. You can do a search on the internet using the words SPELLING TEST GENERATOR FREE
Bill Page - Jen I use the pair/share. Have kids give eaach other the word list and draw their own pictures.
Mentor Grace/IL - Jen, do you have a scanner. Paste a picture on the paper, then scan and copy. It does sound like a lot of extra effort to me when plain paper will do the job.
MagooMentor - "Why, oh, why, oh why-o.....Why did I ever leave Ohio?" Hmmmmm, Ohio is a fer piece from hyar......
Mentor wizzle - Grace, I don't agree. I can't even think of any subject material that you can't present in a FUN way.
Mentor Grace/IL - Magoo, some toilets flush automatically too. Must be computer controlled. LOL
buffy/sped - well I am going to go to Grace's site... Thanks All LoL @Magoo
Jen24 - i am computer illiterate
Isabelle4_stdt.tchr - Well, I'm off to finish my lesson plans for tomorrow -Have a TGIF!!!!
Jen24 - i am computer illiterate
Missy stu. tea. 1st - What do you think about pets in the class? Good or bad idea?
buffy/sped - Thanks all
Mentor wizzle - Jen, it is time to learn technology. That is a big teacher requirement now.
Jen24 - tanks for the advice
Mentor wizzle - Missy, I think it is a great idea, but lots of work.
MagooMentor - Grace, you are right....how could I forget those flushers??? I hate them! They scare me!
Beth/1 - As a new teacher, which committee would you join at your school? Which academic focus group? Committee: Discipline, social, academic. Focus Group: Reading, Writing, math.
Kathleen - Hi, I'm sorry! I had a connection problem!
Beth/1 - I think I am going to join Academic and Writing (my weakest area)
MagooMentor - Missy, depends on the make up of the class, and the pet.....rabbits are not good because they are so fragile...
Mentor Grace/IL - Kathleen, we've missed you but we're carrying on -- LOL
Mentor wizzle - Beth, you could go in many directions. Join the committee of your interest or your weakness or the one who has a teacher friend. Many choices.
MagooMentor - Hmmmmm.....could there be a SNERT amongst us??
Bill Page - Missy! ask your question again. They missed it
Beth/1 - What is a SNERT?
MagooMentor - Someone is having trouble making a decision.........
Beth/1 - thanks!
MagooMentor - Snotty, Nasty, Egotistical, Rude Teen........meaning anyone who comes into a chatroom to cause trouble.........
Mentor Grace/IL - lop is creating a rainbow.
Holley - Hi again....who was looking for a spelling sheet online?
Kathleen - lop, are you a new teacher?
LK - I teach computers and technology today day 11 of my career I had a child have a seizure. I have never been so afraid in my adult life!
Kathleen - LK, even veterans would be shaken in those circumstances. Is everything alright with the child?
Mentor wizzle - LK, that is aweful. Is the child alright? Are you alright?
Kathleen - That probably wasn't people logging off, was someone with a banned number trying to log on.
MagooMentor - wizzle, I just emailed the person to whom you spoke..........
LK - She went to the hospital in an ambulance. But before anyone called 911 they called family! If that were my kid I would want help called first!
Beth/1 - Question. How far in advance do you plan? 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks? Which works best?
Kathleen - Holley, we're here
Holley - Thanks Kathleen, I was worried I wasn't
Missy stu. tea. 1st - Does any one know where I could find some good sponge activities?
MagooMentor - OMG, poor kid! Poor you! Did you know the child might have one, or did no one tell you??
Mentor wizzle - LK, I know that must have scared you. Things like that have happened to me since a lot of my kids have medical issues.
Holley - Is Jen24 still here?
Mentor Grace/IL - Beth, I had an overall plan for the year. Everything rather fell into place, even with a semi-individualized program.
LK - No she has never had a problem before.
Mentor wizzle - I think Jen logged off a while ago.
Beth/1 - Grace, I have a VERY GENERAL year plan. But I mean the actual lessons. What you will actually teach wach day.
Mentor Grace/IL - LK, that happened to my daughter in her first year of teaching. She was petrified at the time. But, that's soooo long ago now.
MagooMentor - LK, how old is the girl??
LK - I wanted to cry. I was so worried. I'm lucky I have a para so I could send the other kids to the hall with her
Holley - oh darn...I found a spelling sheet online for her!
Missy stu. tea. 1st - LK It might have been the computer program. You might want to check into that!
Mentor wizzle - Beth, I don't do my lessons until about a few days before. I have to wait that long because my kids are so unpredictable.
LK - The child is 9
Mentor Grace/IL - Beth, each evening I would assess what each child needed and kept my plans on clipboards for the various subjects.
Kathleen - The strobing of a computer monitor, or the flourrescent lights could have resulted in the seizure.
LK - We were in Word. Had been there for only 3 minutes. Do floursent lights cause problems?
rowlf - For my students who have seizure disorders, I always ask the parents what causes them at the beginning of the schoolyear so that we are prepared. We have a seizure plan in case.
Beth/1 - Grace, individaul plans for each student?!?!?!
LK - Opps there's my answer
MagooMentor - Bless her little heart! Must have scared the parents to pieces, also.
Mentor wizzle - LK, the lights can cause problems for epileptics
rowlf - LK, they can-- Blinking/flashing lights can be a problem
MagooMentor - flooressant lights cause seizures?????
Beth/1 - Wizzle, that is how I am going about it now. 2-3 days in advance. I was wondering if I needed more days.
MagooMentor - I had NO idea.........
Kathleen - New teachers chatting here, e-mail kathleen@teachers.net and I'll put your name in a drawing for a book, drawing at 9:30 pmE tomorrow.
Mentor wizzle - Magoo, that is the scariest thing in the world. My daughter and I stopped in a little store on the way to school a few years ago and she lost consciousness and fell into a pile of boxes in the store. I was screaming my head off!
Kathleen - Magoo, they can in some.
LK - I'm going to ask for more info about the cause.
MagooMentor - LK, has anyone given you some info you can pass along to the other kids, so they don't point and stare when she returns??
rowlf - LK does your school have a nurse?
Mentor wizzle - Beth, that is an individual thing. Try to do it at your speed and see if it works out.
Mentor Grace/IL - Beth, yes. It was group and regroup as they completed the steps I expected them to take. Everyone covered the same material but at different rates. It was great because absentees could be plugged in wherever they left off.
rowlf - good idea magoo.
LK - No nurse.
Kathleen - everyone here should click on Update so your name shows in the occupants box
rowlf - do you know what to do if this student has a seizure again?
LK - I only see them once a week
rowlf - I get specific guidelines from the parent and doctor as to what to do if they have a seizure
MagooMentor - LK, try the internet, or call a clinic and ask for info--just basic stuff--you can turn it into a science lesson/teachable moment......when the girl returns, if she feels like sharing her experience, she could tell what it felt like, etc.
LK - I expect we will write a plan in the next few days
Beth/1 - Grace, what grade? That just seems overwhelming to me!
Mentor wizzle - Beth in fact, do everything that way. It is like a cycle "Plan-do-see if it works-adjust the plan"
rowlf - make sure you get it to all her/his teachers
rowlf - the the principals office and such.
rowlf - put it in your sub plan folder, too.
MagooMentor - LK, another thing--find out what famous people have had seizures...might make the little gal feel a little less 'strange'.
rowlf - just in case.
Mentor Grace/IL - First grade, Beth. Of course I had taught for beaucoup years by then. I got into it via "Programmed Reading" which allowed for individual progression. There was a big push for that in the 70s.
LK - Our school is in the process of making a flip chart of all kids with special medical needs. Photo and description of the problem so all on staff will have knowledge of needs
rowlf - there is a really good book out on seizure disorders
LK - Magoo--great idea. What is the book rowlf?
rowlf - Jay Lo books
Mentor Grace/IL - Beth, 4blocks operates a bit like that -- whole group for some things and individualized reading added in.
MagooMentor - Grace, my kids were in elem school in the mid-late 70's.....78-79, etc. My son was in one of those indiv. reading programs....he went thru the packets so fast he got bored and would play cars on the floor, waiting for the other kids! Teacher finally started giving him 3 pkts a day instead of one.
rowlf - (800)801-0159 I am not sure of the title.
LK - Hey I work in a library...I'll look it up!
Beth/1 - I wish we did 4 blocks at my school. I have not used it, but everyone talks highly of it. Do you know if it can be incorporated using McGraw Hill things?
MagooMentor - LK, when I was a kid, I thought the ideal job would be to be a librarian and drive a bookmoble to reservations, the mountain folks, etc.
Mentor Grace/IL - Magoo, with Programmed Reading the students read several pages, then had to take a test. I had them write their names on the chalkboard when they were ready to test and spent all my non-instructive time testing two students at once, one at each ear -- LOL.
rowlf - I do components of 4 blocks
Brann-Mentor - ooops...I am WAY late....sorry.
MagooMentor - Grace, now THAT is what I call 'multi-tasking' !!!
LK - I started as a para, then library secretary. Then went back and got a certificate. Now I'm starting a library/media certificate.
Mentor Grace/IL - I really learned how to listen to children read orally. Of course, I needed to work one on one with the really pokey one.
Kathleen - I was late too, Brann.
MagooMentor - Brann, yes, you are way late......some of us were sobbing into our snickerdoodles, wondering where you were.........
Mentor Grace/IL - Brann, you're excused -- if you have a good excuse, LOL.
Brann-Mentor - laughing....thanks....I tell you the 14 hour days I am putting in is daringing.
MagooMentor - If Brann brought us izza, Pepsi and ice-cream, that's a good excuse.........
Mentor Grace/IL - Hmmm -- what typo created darining?
Brann-Mentor - I thought it was at 9ET so I RUSHED home to be here by 6.....
MagooMentor - I wasn't sobbing over K because I thought she was lurking.........peeking out from behind bookcases...........
LK - I've been so busy the past 3 weeks. I can't imagine where I'll find time for 3 credits. And another 3 in November!
Mentor Grace/IL - Oops, I can't type either -- LOL
Mentor wizzle - Ha Ha Ha
rowlf - who brought me pizza?
Mentor Grace/IL - Now, what's on the pizza? I'll take sausage and mushrooms.
MagooMentor - 'daringing' is a little-known expression from the original Greek, meaning a variety of things, none of which I can type in here.................
Mentor wizzle - Magoo, are you playing tricks?
Beth/1 - Thanks to all! This has been so helpful. I am putting kiddos to bed and them coming back for the beginning teacher chat. Thanks again!
Kathleen - taech5, anything we can help with in the few mintues we have left? (In fact, the session is technically over, but a couple of us might be able to stay on, especially those who were late!)
Beth/1 - bye!
MagooMentor - where in the world did that toothy face come from in my post about pizza???
Pizza Delivery - In Brann strolls carring several HOT large pizzas, COLD Pepsi- and all its variety, and Has the Van outside to take EVERYONE to baskin RObbins for all the ice cream they can eat....and it is all FREE!!!!!!
Mentor wizzle - Bye Beth!
Kathleen - This is the time slot for Beginning & Student Teachers' chat.
Mentor wizzle - Pizza! You are making me hungry!
Brann - daringing means draining
LK - Thanks for the info and the up-lift.
MagooMentor - Well, I am outta here!!!!! BR is well-known for it's committment to serving people all the calcium they can hold!!!
Mentor wizzle - Well, I will give them their privacy. I want to go eat something...(thanks a lot Pizza Delivery!)
Brann - who me Kat? Is that finger pointed at me??? LOL
MagooMentor - No, Brann, 'draining' means when the weather is really, really wet and drops fall from the clouds.......
Brann - LAUGHING
MagooMentor - wizzle, you'll return tomorrow night???
Brann - oh thank you for the smile!
Kathleen - LOL I was late, too.
MagooMentor - I must go.......I can only be professional and serious for short periods of time, and it's been an hour.........
Kathleen - Thank you to ALL mentors and new teachers!!! We'll be here same time tomorrow!
Kathleen - Thanks, Magoo. Go eat.
