Mae - Hello! Everyone ready to chat?
Brad/3 - feeling a little dry, must get something to drink, brb
judy3ca - Hi, Brad and Mae, I 'm here--but exhausted. We just finished week one of two weeks of standardized tests.
Kim/K/SCal - Brad must be getting the drinks..........
judy3ca - Who is reading Wondrous Words?
Kim/K/SCal - ME ME ME
Mae - Me too
Brad/3 - What a week!! Glad it's Friday!! 20 to go!!
Kim/K/SCal - Sympathies, Brad..........didja bring Managritas for everybody
judy3ca - Do you love it? I'm going to try what she calls 'choral reading' next week and I'm very excited!
Mae - I was a little confused as how she goes about choral reading
Brad/3 - I'll be looking forward to hearing about that judy
Kim/K/SCal - I just love it. I am on the chapter about ENVISIONING........but keep skipping ahead to READING ALOUD....
Sharon - hi all
judy3ca - Brad, it's probably going to be a big dud, but I'm excited anyway, LOL. I've invited my Lit Coach, so I hope it's decent.
Mae - reading aloud is critical!!!
judy3ca - Oh, Kim, I just loved the chapter about envisioning!
Mae - judy - it will be grand
Kim/K/SCal - Reading Aloud is GOSPEL to me.........
Mae - I feel like I will read WW over and over
Brad/3 - My kids really got into something I tried this year called "Poetry Cafe"
Mae - Me too Kim
judy3ca - Thanks, Mae, actually her way of doing it made me think of an old post of yours about Readers Theater.
judy3ca - How does that work, Brad?
Mae - OOOOH....
Brad/3 - they really are a bunch of performers; looking to incorporate more of similar activities next year.
Brad/3 - We had Poetry Notebooks, which we practiced reading "poem of week" different ways, echo, choral. . .
Mae - I have a background in drama and I really feel like I haven't utlilized it enough
Brad/3 - Then on Wed., we would do some comprehension/word work with it
Sharon - what grade, mae?
Brad/3 - Then on Fri., I would have groups sign up for performances of any of the poems in the notebook.
Mae - I'm trying to do more w/poetry - I've been doing some choral reading, but I change up who and how many read which lines
judy3ca - Sharon!!! Hi! ((((Sharon))))
Mae - 4th
Kim/K/SCal - I just bought two of Regie Routman's poetry books, K and 1st..........
Mae - That is cool Brad
Brad/3 - We would "snap-clap" beatnik style, and I turned out all the lights and shone the overhead light on them like a spotlight.
Sharon - awwww judy.... i thought you weren't speaking to me *sniffle sniffle*
Mae - I have Calkins poetry books
Brad/3 - Some weeks they got a little out of hand, but mostly we had a blast.
Kim/K/SCal - I am trying to add more poetry to the day........doing better this year.
judy3ca - Brad, that is great! Now where did I just read about that? I think it was in Reading With Meaning, right?
Kim/K/SCal - ewwww........Brad I wanna be in YOUR class...........
Brad/3 - I actually had one of my reluctant reader behavior problems ask in his writer's workshop piece last week why we "don't do it" anymore.
Sharon - yeah, judy..... i read about it in RWM
Mae - I wanna be in Brad's class too
Kim/K/SCal - Hi to sharon, btw........
Sharon - hi kim... thanks
Brad/3 - judy, I flipped when I read it in Reading with Meaning, cause I thought, "hey she stole my idea!" LOL
judy3ca - Thanks, Sharon, and she had jazz playing, too, right?
Mae - Is RWM geared for primary or does it suit a range?
judy3ca - Brad, independent invention, right? Or great minds think alike?
Kim/K/SCal - don'tcha hate that brad? now SHE is getting all that money................
Mae - hi Alta Rose
Sharon - just think brad, you could have written that book and been all famous and stuff
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi, everyone!
judy3ca - Kim, LOL, oh, right, big teaching money.
Kim/K/SCal - I think it is great minds thinking alike. THAT is scary sometimes...
judy3ca - Hi Alta Rose
Brad/3 - And maybe I could've used the proceeds to buy some dishtowels for my tables
Sharon - judy, what did you think about her using the terminology with her firsties?
Sharon - hi alta rose
Kim/K/SCal - Wow Brad........ guess you are going to have to DO the poetry thing again.........
judy3ca - Oh, Sharon, I'm so completely impressed with everything she does. I'm still leery of too much jargon, but I love the way she does it.
Kim/K/SCal - Speaking of dishtowels, I wonder where Kathy B is...................
Brad/3 - sharon, i wondered about that myself. I find that is one of my bigger problems, "watering down" vocabulary for primary
judy3ca - Roll of thunder, hear my cry....Kathy!
Sharon - it's wondrful to have these high standards to work towards
Kim/K/SCal - haw haw haw ......... (snort)........ judy..............
Alta Rose / 1 - I had a fun week. I bought a book called "Invitation to Munsch." I read 3 Robert Munsch books, and after each book there was a R. Theatre based on that particular story for the kids to do. We performed our last one for the grade 2s. It sure helps with fluency and expression!
Kim/K/SCal - Alta Rose.........that sounds like fun!!!!
Brad/3 - i want to do more reader's theatre next year, more writing of the scripts by students too
Sharon - oh wow, alta rose...... i've gotta havee that book
Kim/K/SCal - Stephanie's Ponytail ROCKS! Now that girl has MOXIE............
judy3ca - Alta Rose--isn't Munsch fun? When I had firsties, we wrote to him and he sent back a story using the kids' names. And have you seen his great website?
Alta Rose / 1 - The R. Theater poems were perfect for kids. Bedtime woes based on Mortimer, etc.
Mae - I need to write a book on reader's theatre and a few scripts
Kim/K/SCal - No peer pressure for Stephanie............. hee hee hee ........"........you are just a bunch of BRAINLESS COPYCATS!"
judy3ca - And Paper Bag Princess! What a woman!
Sharon - i just bought the munsch works grand treasury book..... i didn't see the one with RT scripts
Kim/K/SCal - .....in your spare time, Mae!
Alta Rose / 1 - Yes, I've seen his website. A few years ago we took our classes to him in person.
Brad/3 - also had a "glowing" observation of one of my reading lessons this week
creech - hello, is this natl bds chat room?
Mae - In my spare time! LOL!!!
judy3ca - Brad, congrats!
Kim/K/SCal - hello creech.........naw, just a bunch of professional book junkies..............
Mae - I've been bookmarking author websites - there are loads of them
Sharon - super-indelible-never-come-off-till-youre-dead-coloring markers..... gotta love 'em
creech - hello
Alta Rose / 1 - Lol!
Kim/K/SCal - It's a 12-Step program. First, we admit we have a problem.
Mae - (((hi rudy)))
judy3ca - Shoot, Sharon, what's the title of that one--the one where the girl colors everything?
Alta Rose / 1 - I like Jan Brett's site, too.
Kim/K/SCal - Wow, Brad...........you are a Literacy God.
Sharon - like this: I have a problem... i don't make enough money to support my habit
judy3ca - Hi Rudy!
Mae - Amber Brown?
Brad/3 - aw, shucks, kim, i'm speechless
Sharon - purple, green and yellow, judy
Rudy - Hi Mae. Happy to be with you everyone!
Kim/K/SCal - Brad doesn't make enough money either........ he has to go onto Amazon and lick the screen.
Mae - Sharon - what is money?
Alta Rose / 1 - Can't think of the name now, judy! It'll come to me!
Sharon - but my favorites are mortimer, mud puddle, and pigs
Rudy - Hi judy
Kim/K/SCal - You are NEVER speechless Brad................. congrats, I am serious.
Brad/3 - it's the only way my computer ever gets dusted, kim
Sharon - cant bring myself to read the one about the "@#$%to my class..... anyone done that one?
Alta Rose / 1 - Judy--Isn't it Red, Green and Yellow? Maybe not...
Brad/3 - i thought she might freak out cause i wasn't using the basal
Alta Rose / 1 - Nope, Sharon!
Kim/K/SCal - Mae, it is the stuff you would have if you just STOPPED buying the books. But that is why we are here. WHO would like to share first tonight?
Sharon - ack...... they censored it!
Alta Rose / 1 - Purple, Green and Yellow??
Brad/3 - LOL kim,
Kim/K/SCal - About the WHAT?
judy3ca - Booted, but back....that's it! Purple Green and Yellow. THANKS!
Brad/3 - did judy leave cause now it says she's logged on?
Kim/K/SCal - What did you use, Brad?
Mae - We are reading Night of the Twisters - one of my kids raised the book in the air and hollered, "THIS IS SUCH A GOOD BOOK!"
Brad/3 - reading a-z.com book
Sharon - judy are ou familiar with barn dance by bill martin, jr?
Brad/3 - LOL, Mae, that was on TV tonight
Kim/K/SCal - YES! Way to go, Mae!
Sharon - that is my all time favorite read-aloud
Kim/K/SCal - love BARN DANCE
judy3ca - Sharon, I am. I love Martin and Archambault's books!
Rudy - I love to read Barn Dance to the kids!!
Mae - I've been reading Barn Dance w/a child that I'm tutoring
Sharon - do you sing it like a barn dance call, kim?
judy3ca - I like Knots on a Counting Rope a lot, too.
Brad/3 - never heard of barn dance, what's story?
Mae - On tv? I'm famous already?
Kim/K/SCal - Uh.......Sharon, no.... I am a travesty of a Kinder teacher. I can't sing. This is why God invented CDs.
Mae - Oh - I have Knots on a Counting Rope
judy3ca - Kid wakes up in middle of night, goes out to barn for a wild dance with the animals.
Kim/K/SCal - but i get all rowdy when i read it................
Alta Rose / 1 - I had a bit of a candle. We had all our students fill out evaluation forms re. how they feel about reading and writing. They will go to the school district office. At the end. it says, "If you like, tell us something about reading and writing at your school." One of mine (Grade 1) wrote: "You can use reading strategies." Yes!!
Brad/3 - cheers, alta rose
Mae - Pam Munoz Ryan has a brand new book out called, Mud is Cake - it is precious
Kim/K/SCal - Good one, Alta Rose.........
Sharon - "now rocket to the moon and powder puff your noses, and hurry home to momma on your little pink tosies....... that enough for you, brad?
Rudy - Love Knots, too. Barn Dance is about a little skinny kid that sneaks in to the barn at night. the animals are square dancing and they let him join in. done in rhyme. Fun!!
judy3ca - Kim, I can't sing either.
Brad/3 - never heard of it, sounds good though, martin's the author?
Mae - Way cool Alta Rose!
Brad/3 - For all you non-singers, you have to "Tooty-Ta"
Sharon - and i also love bill martin jr's ghost eye tree...... done in dialogue... i heard bill martin jr perform that story, he was amazing
Alta Rose / 1 - I shared MOT with my collegues. We are going to use it for a book study next year.
Kim/K/SCal - Hello, my name is Kim. I am a Kinder teacher with a book-buying problem. AND I CAN'T sing.
Sharon - yay rose!
Kim/K/SCal - So your presentation went well, Alta Rose?????
Alta Rose / 1 - My kids LOVE Tooty-Ta! It's hilarious!
Mae - I had a kid who wrote this line in a piece this week, "My heart lept right onto that horse" (something like that) - I just loved it
judy3ca - I read my kids poetry every day this week before standardized tests and they loved it. Class favorite: Paul Revere's Ride and guess who illustrated my version? Ted Rand--so it looks like the Martin Archambault stuff he also illustrates.
Brad/3 - I pass on my crown, Alta Rose is the Literacy God of the Week
Kim/K/SCal - Is that another BOOK? Oh GAWD.........................
Rudy - Wonderful stuff, MAE!
Sharon - do your schools have grants available to apply for?
Alta Rose / 1 - It wasn't really a presentation, Kim, as I have just received the book myself. I told one of my collegues how popular it is. She looked at it, and arranged a book study for next year.
Brad/3 - Where did you learn "Tooty-Ta" Alta Rose?
Kim/K/SCal - Oh, hi Rudy......didn't see you sneak in............
Alta Rose / 1 - I bought a little book and tape that has some little songs for the kids to do. Can't think of the name.
Kim/K/SCal - Tell me about Tootie Ta
Mae - I believe that I am among friends here - so I will share (because I'm really excited about it)...
Rudy - Hi Kim. Haven't been here for a few weeks. Nice to talk about all this book stuff with you folks.
Alta Rose / 1 - Thanks, Brad!
Mae - I wrote an article...
Kim/K/SCal - I am doing an Earth unit.......... I bought WATER DANCE. Wow.......... the illustrations are fantastic.......highly recommend. Good non-fiction text. But written in a narrative style. Does that make sense?
Rudy - Tootie Ta. I love it already just from the name!
Sharon - i read/sang barn dance to some kids in a british school i visited last summer.... kids are the same everywhere...... they were dancing and rocking to the beat!
Kim/K/SCal - ((Mae)) SHARE!
Brad/3 - I hadn't thought about "Tooty-Ta" all year, I just may have to "Tooty" for my kids next week. Too young for 3rd?
Rudy - Go MAE!
Mae - Stop the presses Kim - I just bought Water Dance!!!
Kim/K/SCal - NO WAY, MAE!!!!
Mae - and you can find my article right here at Tnet on the Gazette...
Brad/3 - does that surprise Mae, really you all need to get into this licking thing and save a penny
Rudy - don't know Water Dance?
Alta Rose / 1 - Kim, the kids sing this little chant--"A tootie Ta, a tootie ta, a tootie ta! ta!" As the song progresses, they stick their thumbs up, shoulders out, knees bent, butt out, tongue out, turn around, etc. etc. It's hilarious to do and watch!
Kim/K/SCal - .......great minds........
judy3ca - I bought Water Dance recently, too! And congrats, Mae!
Brad/3 - you really have to see it performed to appreciate
Mae - but if you want to read it you'll find out that "Mae" is chatboard alias...
Brad/3 - wait a minute, is new gazette up?
Rudy - Alta Rose, I'm here chuckling at the visual!
judy3ca - So who are we looking for, Mae?????
Mae - I used my real name...and yes, May Gazette is up...
Alta Rose / 1 - The kids and I crack up! They love it!
Kim/K/SCal - Mae is not your REAL name? Subterfuge in our 12-Step group?
Mae - The article is called, "The Reading Puzzle"
Brad/3 - the reason I brought up Tooty is cuz i had a non-singing teacher perform it in my internship
judy3ca - BRB
Kim/K/SCal - I will look for it, Mae. And print it. And MAKE my lazy butt grad students read it
Alta Rose / 1 - Great, Mae! I'll look forward to reading it!
Mae - My daughter's middle name is "Mae," but I have come to enjoy my pseudo...
Brad/3 - Every time I didn't think I could do something, she'd say, "Look, if I can Tooty-Ta. . ."
Alta Rose / 1 - Brad--Lol!
Brad/3 - The truth is Mae is actually Lucy Calkins
Rudy - Sounds good Brad.
Mae - Kim- I've decided that I want to go to grad school and get my Ph.D. (but I have to get my masters first!)
Kim/K/SCal - Don't TEASE us, Brad.
Sharon - what field, mae?
Mae - LOL! Brad - that's a good one...
Mae - Reading
Kim/K/SCal - That is my secret dream, Mae. But getting a Ph.D or an Ed.D is very difficult here......... distance to travel.
Brad/3 - we'd all faint; there'd be no one left, I'd lick my screen away
Rudy - I'm graduating Sunday with my Masters!
Alta Rose / 1 - Congrats, Rudy!
Alta Rose / 1 - Congrats, Rudy!
Brad/3 - in Scal , there's distance to travel to university?
Mae - That way I could read books and talk about reading and writing all the time and people at school would quit teasing me!!!
Kim/K/SCal - Wow, Rudy! Congrats..... Brad, get Rudy a managrita...............
Rudy - Thanks!!
Sharon - i'm in the Ph.D. reading program at Auburn University.... and loving it
Mae - WAY TO GO RUDY!!!
Brad/3 - cheers, rudy
Kim/K/SCal - I would LOVE to do that Sharon..........
Rudy - Thanks again!! It is a good feeling!!
Alta Rose / 1 - brb
Sharon - i'm learning sooooo much... it feels great
Kim/K/SCal - Uh, yeah, Brad. I live 90 miles north of L.A.
Mae - I should have got my masters when I was post grade getting my teaching certificate - I was ill advised
Mae - I just want to be called Dr. Mae
Brad/3 - so is mae (lucy) keeping us in suspense about her alias or what?
judy3ca - Hooray for you, Mae!!!! Good job! http://teachers.net/gazette/MAY02/frase.html
Sharon - well.... when you get your masters, mae..... bypass specialist and enter directly in the Ph.D. program
Kim/K/SCal - I want to find an online thing. But the trouble is, loading myself up................. teaching kinder, teaching a credential class every 10 weeks..........
Rudy - Did my Masters project on reciprocal teaching. It works. the little guy I tutored went from an E to an L level (Pinnell & Fountas)in 16 sessions!!!
Mae - judy has the link - better than what I could do! LOL!
Mae - What do you mean Sharon?
judy3ca - Sharon, may I tell?
Sharon - complete a masters and enter directly in the Ph.D. program... you can certify along the way
judy3ca - Rudy, good for you! Lots of congrats tonight!
Sharon - it's kind of like not getting an associates degree on your way to a bachelors
Brad/3 - what's with all this, "may i tell?" mae is lucy and now sharon is regie routman
Kim/K/SCal - Wow, Rudy!
Mae - How do Ph.D classes work?
judy3ca - And I'm Katie Wood Ray!
Sharon - idon't wanna be regie...... i wanna be ELLIN.......
Rudy - Thanks judy and Kim!
Kim/K/SCal - Brad....knock it off. I am hyperventilating here. Lucy Calkins? Regie Routman? Next you will say YOU are Cynthia Rylant.
Mae - Rudy is Donald Graves!!!
Brad/3 - then your choral reading should be a resounding success, judy
Kim/K/SCal - TELL TELL TELL TELL TELL
Mae - (((((((((((((((JAN)))))))))))))))
judy3ca - And in my next life, I'm marrying John Irving.
Sharon - hi jan!
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi, Jan!
judy3ca - Jan!!! Hooray, you made it!
Jan - Hi, everyone. Just stopped by to say hello,
Kim/K/SCal - ((((((((JAN))))))))))
Kim/K/SCal - Judy is going to TELL us something.
judy3ca - Sharon????
Brad/3 - dont' you mean lucy, kim?
Jan - What is this about Rudy being Donald Graves.
Sharon - yeah????
Rudy - I wanna be Pinnell or Fountas. Their books are rolling out so fast it makes my head spin! At a conference I heard Pinnell setting up her next official meeting place on the phone. the gang was headed for the beach to conference! Now that is the kind of hard work i would like!!
Kim/K/SCal - Actually, Rudy is Regie Routman. And Brad is Cynthia Rylant.
Mae - Rudy has given us all famous aliases! LOL!
Brad/3 - ohmygawd, judy and sharon are the same person!! that's it!!
judy3ca - Are you comfortable talking about your studies?
Sharon - sure, judy
Mae - What is this about Katie Rae Wood coming out w/a new book in June?
Kim/K/SCal - Hear ya, Rudy.........
judy3ca - And Jan can be Eve Bunting!
Brad/3 - yes, mae, as if there weren't enough to read
Jan - Yes, Eve Bunting is perfect!
judy3ca - Sharon is in a PhD program right NOW!!! Isn't she something?????
Kim/K/SCal - I don't see Jan as an Eve Bunting..........more like a..............Mem Fox
Sharon - lol! i have a long road ahead... but it's worth it
Jan - No, no, no---I am definitely Eve!
Mae - Kim - I almost said that...JINX again!!! Make a wish!
judy3ca - I was just given a gift of a kids' autobiography by Bunting. My kids were entranced!
Kim/K/SCal - Sharon, tell us a bit about your studies...we want to be YOU.
Rudy - does Jan have Mem's red hair???
Brad/3 - Jan is Eve, Eve Plumb (the new Jan Brady)
Jan - Autobiography of Eve? Can you buy one?
Brad/3 - margaritas getting to me
judy3ca - Now, now, children.
Kim/K/SCal - Jan is a firebrand like Mem. Eve is too............ cuddly and ............sunflowery.
Jan - Not red hair---"woven" hair---5 colors.
Mae - You know - I do believe this little group could truely make an impact on the world.
Sharon - remember, kim...... i've just completed one year... and in that oneyear, i've had some serious dissonance thrown at me... but judy can tell you that i thrive on dissonance... so it's all good
judy3ca - Jan, I don't know, I was given the book by a friend who used to work for the publisher. I'd be happy to get the info for you, if you're interested. You should have seen/heard my kids every time she mentioned a book we'd read!
Brad/3 - is that painful, sharon, the dissonance? LOL
Mae - Sharon - what are you getting your degree in?
Kim/K/SCal - what kind of dissonance...........theory? philosophy?
Jan - Kim, you don'tthink I'm cuddly and sunny?
Sharon - ot
Rudy - Good for you Sharon!! At graduation practice the PHD that will hood me for my Masters said a PHD hood is much nicer than a Masters hood. Now I want on of those too!!th
Sharon - it's more painful for judy cuz i bombard her with questions on our MOT email ring!
Kim/K/SCal - ummm....treading very carefully here, Jan. I know that your darling grandaughter sees you that way. and that is good.............
Mae - Rudy - you are too much! LOL again!
Brad/3 - well, then, sharon, you are in your range of proximal development. LOL
Sharon - mae...... reading education
Brad/3 - sharon, come be a lit coach in my building
Jan - Sharon, I am impressed with this Ph.D thing!
Mae - Ohhh - speaking of ZPD - I'm a little confused...
judy3ca - Sharon, and I love every minute of the bombardment. But I have considered bringing Sharon for show and tell when introducing Questioning next year.
Kim/K/SCal - MY DREAM DEGREE............... (awwww................sigh)
Sharon - thanks jan
Kim/K/SCal - ZPD..........instructional level
Rudy - Mae I don't know what LOL means??
Mae - There is ZAD as well!
Sharon - lol judy! you've GOT to find a text on amelia earhart
Mae - laughing out loud
Brad/3 - lives of literacy
judy3ca - Oh, Sharon, I forgot to tell you, I did! However, I only bought one copy and my bio fans stole it before I could plan--or even read it myself!
Rudy - Thanks!
Jan - Very smooth, Kim.....
Sharon - brad.... i know it sounds crazy but i want this ph.d. strictly make my teaching more effective..... no desires to step out of the classroom
Kim/K/SCal - No, in your case, BRAD.......LOL is "licking off lint..........." (from your computer)
Mae - I've come to the conclusion that AR may have zpd mixed up - they target the indp. reading level and call it zpd - that's where I got a little hung up when I reviewed Vgotsky (sp?)
Sharon - which version was it, Judy?
Kim/K/SCal - I can see that, Brad.......the more I learn the more I want to STAY in the classroom. But teaching credential students is rewarding too.........in a different way.
Sharon - mae, i think you're right
Kim/K/SCal - I agree, Mae.
Brad/3 - i know what you mean, sharon. My master's in admin. greatly informs my teaching
judy3ca - It's Eyewitness (DK). I love their stuff for third grade! We don't always like the side columns, but the info is great and pretty well written.
Mae - Wow Sharon - I'm impressed. I think that I might want to work w/new teachers - eventually - first I want to go to 2nd grade!
Rudy - Oh Kim! you are so funny!!
Kim/K/SCal - They are using the term in a way to sound "professional" in their handy dandy little printouts to parents
Kim/K/SCal - Oh come on, Brad......... ADMIN?
Brad/3 - unfortunately, i think you speak truth there, KIm
Sharon - well.. remember this if it doesn't tell you.... because I think it made a big impact on her life...... amelia earhart's mother was the first woman to climb pikes peak
Brad/3 - strange but true
judy3ca - Yuck, are you serious, Brad??????
Kim/K/SCal - the first biography i ever read, sharon was amelia earhart
judy3ca - Wow, that's a great factoid.
Sharon - my masters is in admin, too Brad
Mae - Brad - you want to be an administrator? Did I get that right?
Kim/K/SCal - Yeah, yuck, brad.....ptewey......... icky icky
Jodi - Hi, anyone here working on National Boards
Brad/3 - what i want is to go back to university and train new ones
judy3ca - Thank you, Kim, notice how restrained I was with only one Yuck? ROFLOL
Brad/3 - or come up with some whiz-bang method of teaching and go on the circuit
Mae - National board chat is over - this is the professional reading chat
Sharon - that i would like to, brad..... an adjunct position
judy3ca - Brad, she said completely nonjudgmentally, well, that's much better!
Brad/3 - I want to be an instructional leader, but you find less and less of those positions around these days
Mae - Me too Brad
Kim/K/SCal - Yes, one dignified Yuck. We didn't want to overdo it with the yucks. Now skin crawling, and shuddering, and icky, icky, and gagging noises.............
judy3ca - Gosh, am I the only one here who "just" wants to be a good teacher?
Brad/3 - the position was collapsed into building principal in the state of OHio (where i'm at)
Kim/K/SCal - Jodi this is a 12-Step program for Recovering Professional Book Readers and Incurable Children's Literature buyers............
Brad/3 - so next best thing is going to university, or becoming shelley harwayne
Mae - It's hard to put my reading to work right now - I have a very ADHD class and they think that school is out (afterall, TAAS testing is over)...
Rudy - Kim, LOL!! My administration is now clustering her little group around her to plan a PLC, Professional Learning Community (Defour). However, she hasn't noticed that almost everyone in her little group has now stopped teaching. They are really into planning!!
Brad/3 - (actually I am shelly harwayne) LOL
Sharon - JUST....... pffffft.......being a good teacher is the ultimate
Kim/K/SCal - Sharon..........what is your thesis?
Brad/3 - mine think school's out too mae
judy3ca - Okay, Brad, if we're backing up, I wanna be Nancie Atwell, too.
Kim/K/SCal - Brad.....you will have to have surgery. and you will have to tell your mother you want to be shelly harwayne.
Brad/3 - my degree gave me a more global outlook on what's going on in the school that infoms my classroom
Mae - judy - I will be in the classroom for a long time - my kids are still little and I want to be there
Mae - I'm just thinking ahead - I like change
Kim/K/SCal - Sure they are, Rudy! (Shudder, shudder..........)
Sharon - it's still awhile till that stage....but I'm thinking it will be on the internal voice in 5,6,7 year olds...... is it developmentally appropriate to have at that age or does it arrive with the onset of silent reading
judy3ca - Mae, I like change, too, but the way we're moving reading and writing these days, that's a lot of change! And you're changing grade levels (fingers crossed).
Kim/K/SCal - GREAT question...........real Vygotsky/Piaget overtones.............
Brad/3 - actually, mae, i'm really ticked that I wanna do all this cool stuff, and mine think school's out, so I'm a little miffed at them this week
judy3ca - Sharon, that is sooooo cool!
Kim/K/SCal - Jan, you remember the question I asked on internal speech? Sharon reminded me........i made a text-to - world connection
Sharon - and JUDY is gonna help me when it's time.... right judy? *puppy dawg eyes*
Mae - My principal wanted to talk to me today - my heart lept - then not a word - she wanted to ask about the kid I'm tutoring and making sure that I'm keeping documentation (he is attached to a lawyer)
judy3ca - right, sharon, LOL! Actually, I will be honored!
Jan - Kim, that is so cool--must be the margaritas!
Brad/3 - poor Mae, far as i know, i'm still dropping to 2
Mae - Brad - my kids thought school was out months ago! LOL!
Alta Rose / 1 - When will you know, Mae? (About Gr. 2)
judy3ca - Brad, do you mean you're changing grades, too?
Sharon - *quickly learns how to cut, paste and save judy's response (but I may delete the LOL )
Brad/3 - right after testing, but definitely after spring break
Mae - Oh - I don't know when I will know, but I do know for sure that 2 people are transferring out
judy3ca - ROFLOL!!!! You are a gem!
Brad/3 - dropping to 2
Kim/K/SCal - I never did get a good response from Pat Cunningham........referred me to "psych research".............. sigh.
Brad/3 - kim?
Rudy - What grade do you have now, Mae?
Mae - You are going to 2nd Brad?
Kim/K/SCal - yeah brad............
Jan - I'm getting a long distance phone call. Signing off.
Mae - I'm in 4th
Sharon - what was your question, kim?
judy3ca - You know which author is very nice? Vicki Spandel of 6 Traits.
judy3ca - Bye, Jan!
Kim/K/SCal - oh sorry...........let me think of how to say it succinctly
Jan - Don't talk about me when I leave. I can read the transcript!
Brad/3 - what are you talking about? (kim)
Mae - Come back Jan!
Jan - Goodnight!
Mae - Only good things Jan!
Mae - Goodnight Jan!
Sharon - 'night Jan
Mae - Ginny knows Vicki Spandel
Kim/K/SCal - Okay. Cunningham says (yeah, I know......she WRITES) that it is possible, but not usual, to READ without using internal speech. I wondered how that was possible.
Alta Rose / 1 - We are going through a tough time right now. Due to decreasing enrollment, 2 teachers will have to be transfered, probably against their will, as I don't know of anyone who wants to leave. My principal told me, that since we made the committment for me to "loop" with my kids to grade two, I will likely be staying. Kind of a sad situation.
Brad/3 - is she off yet? LOL
Sharon - it is possible
judy3ca - Mae, Ginny is the one who "hooked me up" with Vicki (via email).
m - hi
Sharon - have you ever zoned out while reading?
Mae - Kim - what do you mean by "internal speech"?
Brad/3 - definitely, Sharon
Rudy - Sharon, while working on my Masters stuff learning dyads were discussed in the Brown, Paliscar, Armbruster stuff. Seems like that fits your topic of internal speech.
Kim/K/SCal - HOW? I eMailed her and she was kind enough to respond......but in a general way. HOW can you read without internal speech? Internal language? SPLAIN
judy3ca - frequently zoned out, Sharon
Brad/3 - ba-da-bum, Judy
Mae - judy - I will have to talk to Ginny about that! Actually, I was thinking of submitting my son's writing for her next book
Sharon - distracting and interacting internal voices when reading, mae
Kim/K/SCal - Internal speech..........saying the words in your head.......sounding like oral language
Kim/K/SCal - Yes, but there is language.........and if you are zoning, you are not comprehending...............
Mae - For silent reading or oral reading?
Rudy - Metacogntion, reciprocal teaching, internal speech have lots in common, Sharon
judy3ca - Ginny thought she'd like something I posted on the chatboard and sent it to her. That's how it started.
Alta Rose / 1 - Hi, Randy!
Sharon - saying the words of the text in your head is reciting speech.... then there's distracting speech (thinking about putting out the garbage or something) and interacting voice (talking to the author)
judy3ca - Hi Randy
Rudy - Hi Randy
Kim/K/SCal - RUN everybody! It's RANDY! And he brought his MOOSE..........ouch.
Mae - Cool - I'm meeting Ginny this summer. She is coming in to do her workshop!
RandyAk4 - greetings I always seem to miss these meetings.
Mae - ((((hi randy)))))
Sharon - defo, rudy! I want to begin my firsties with a metacognition study next year
Kim/K/SCal - Yes, sharon...........but there is still speech. How can you READ the text without internal speech?
Brad/3 - this is very interesting sharon, go on
judy3ca - Mae, who is Ginny doing her workshop for? Your district?
Sharon - have you ever driven a car and didn't remember turning?
Mae - My district and a consortium of others - Houston area districts
Sharon - it's the same concept
Kim/K/SCal - Yes.......the autopilot thing.
judy3ca - I'm having my training with Jeff Hicks, Mae. Do you know him? He wrote some stuff with Spandel?
Sharon - then have you ever read a page and didn't read anything you read?
Kim/K/SCal - But Sharon, I am feeling pretty dense here..........If you do that while you are reading, you did not comprehend, right?
RandyAk4 - Are you talking about metacognition? Listening to yourself think? am i close?
Mae - About internal speech - I can read aloud dramatically and think about something else. I can also totally think about the text. I can read silent - yet dramatic in my head. Am I hitting this anywhere?
Mae - judy the name sound familiar, but that's it
Kim/K/SCal - Randy, pay attention! We are talking about how Cunningham says it is possible to read without internal speech. Not usual, but possible.
Sharon - very closely related, randy... it's a part of metacognition
Mae - Is Jeff Hicks from Great Source?
RandyAk4 - I have sharon even a paragraph when my mind wanders away but my eyes keep looking at the text.
judy3ca - Mae, yes.
Rudy - In How to Prevent Reading Difficulties the mention is made about mid book that reciprocal teaching (predicting, clarifying, question generating, and summarizing) can be taught to the applicatin point to remediate noncomprehenders. Turns out the key is the metacognition of those strategies through a reciprocal negotiation of the text meaning between student and teacher.
Sharon - tat
Brad/3 - i find that i have to read silently to pay attention because if I read aloud, then I can become distracted by my "internal voice" I'm really onto my 3rds because so many still want to read aloud
RandyAk4 - LOL@Kim...yes maam
Kim/K/SCal - BUT YOU ARE NOT READING IT IF YOU ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION.
Mae - Can someone define internal speech ( in definitions for dummies please)?
Kim/K/SCal - Sorry to yell.......
Sharon - that's it randy...... eiter you were experiencing distracting voice OR if there were no voice..... you just zoned out..... that's reading with no internal voice....... and then there's reciting voice, where you just call the words
Kim/K/SCal - Okay, let me look up what cunningham says. brb and don't talk about me and my internal voices...........
Mae - Judy - I am talking to someone from Great Source about doing workshops for them - Write Traits mainly...
judy3ca - Well, Kim, you know those kids who can decode beautifully with no comprehension????
Brad/3 - it makes me wonder if some of them don't NEED that reading aloud in order to comprehend. Is this possible, Sharon?
Sharon - wrong, kim...... you may not be comprehending, but you can still read
Brad/3 - I have about 23 of those Judy
RandyAk4 - My internal voice just told me I have a lot to learn.
judy3ca - Cool, Mae! That's wonderful!
Sharon - when text is too difficult they revert to reading aloud to comprehend....... i do that too
Alta Rose / 1 - I would disagree, Sharon. Reading is based upon getting meaning from print. Otherwise, it's just decoding.
judy3ca - Brad, do you let them read aloud? Aren't we finding they "get it" better silently?
Brad/3 - mae, i'm catching the sidebar, but did you just say, you're in negotiations to do workshops?
Mae - Okay - wait a minute - is interanl speech where I'm reading along and I catch myself thinking about something that connects - it's like I'm stretching my schema and trying to make the pieces fit?
Sharon - that's interacting voice, mae
Kim/K/SCal - Sharon....semantics here. By reading I mean "making meaning." Not just word calling.....
RandyAk4 - Does that reading aloud to comprehend connect to the kinesthetic learners idea?
Mae - Yes Brad, but the lady that I need to meet w/is remodeling her house!
Brad/3 - judy, i think they get it better silently, i speak to them of "faster" reading if you're silent reading, but I still have those I have to remind on almost a daily basis (lack of trust in self as reader?)
Kim/K/SCal - frustration here.......i use classrooms that work in my ed 500 class......but you think i can find the reference? Oh heck no............
Rudy - Sharon, Are you familiar with Carla Hannaford smart Moves? She's a neural physiologist who couldn't read until she was 10. she talks about her work on some of the stuff you might be referring to.
Mae - We have been trying to set up a date...she seems excited to meet w/me. I have mutual contact - that helps.
Sharon - i'll look it up, rudy..... thanks
RandyAk4 - Mae thats an interesting thought. We are all reading right now but it is a lot like someone is talking in my head.
Brad/3 - i hope that works out for you mae, you're living my dream
Mae - Okay - I'm working w/a kid who understands what he reads, understands what I read, but reads at the rate of 7 wpm. What do ya'll think of that?
RandyAk4 - Sharon how many different voices are there..i didn't do my homework...sorry
Kim/K/SCal - Yes, Randy! When you are "reading" and comprehending, you have the "voices." I don't see how you can comprehend without the LANGUAGE
Brad/3 - fluency and phrasing work mae
Brad/3 - or maybe a small vocabulary
Mae - We are working on oral fluency.
RandyAk4 - I think so too Kim.
Brad/3 - how's his decoding?
judy3ca - Last week we had the first week of standardized testing AND a review from a state compliance team--so I'm exhausted. Thanks for a wonderful discussion. Good night, all!
Mae - He sounds out every single word - whispers it - then says it. I think that he just needs to say it. It's like a habit.
Kim/K/SCal - It sounds slow and painful, mae.........he comprehends?
Brad/3 - oh, judy, don't leave
Rudy - Get the IRA Ruddell Ruddell book too and look up the Brown, Paliscar, Armbruster reciprocal teaching stuff too. somehoe they split up metacognition in to two phases. One sounded a lot like your internal speech comments, but I cannot remember what they called that strand.
Mae - He knows phonics better than I do.
Brad/3 - do you have him go back, "smooth it out"
Mae -bye judy
Alta Rose / 1 - Do you think some Reader's Theatre / Choral reading would work for him, Mae?
Brad/3 - "read it like you're saying it" is what I tell my group
Sharon - interacting, distracting, reciting for sure, brad.... but it's well covered in chris tovani's book
Kim/K/SCal - yes, good idea alta rose
Mae - I model and have him repeat after me. It's amazing how well he does after he reads the text several times. The problem is when he first encounters the text.
Sharon - what grade, mae?
Mae - I know that his sped teacher has him working on a little play
Brad/3 - if he has no trouble decoding the words and just reads at a slow rate, what about working with a metronome?
Mae - He is in 3rd, suppose to be in 4th, and reads on 1st, but his listening comprehension is on 4th
Brad/3 - or a stopwatch. Would he compete with himself to read faster?
Rudy - I do Alta Rose. I do alot of modeling, repeat reading ,and choral reading. Also do readers theater where I always have a part so to model then keep rotating the parts to through each child. Fluency sure builds and then seems to transfer.
Sharon - have you tried "phrase reading" with him?
Alta Rose / 1 - It must be very frustrating for him.
Brad/3 - You could graph it and show the improvement immediately, build confidence
Kim/K/SCal - do you tape him, mae? so he can hear himself?
Mae - Metronome? Is that the music thing that swings back and forth?
Brad/3 - yes, mae
Alta Rose / 1 - Have you used a metronome, Brad?
Brad/3 - good idea kim
Mae - I have taped him. What is "phrase reading?"
Brad/3 - no, it just came to me, alta, (do i get my crown back) LOL
Mae - Oh my gosh Brad - I haven't seen one of those in years. My grandmother had one.
Alta Rose / 1 - Aw, can't I keep it this week? LOL.
RandyAk4 - What do you do with a metranome? I've never heard of this before...feeling dumb
Sharon - i had a kid like that..... i wrote several high frequency word phrases on sentence charts and flashed them at him ..... the goal was to try his eye to scan the whole phrase and not focus word by word
Brad/3 - I would think you could start out the metronome at a slow speed and then increase it to establish a "reading rhythm"
Sharon - you lessen the time you show the phrase each time
Mae - I have discovered that he is a relunctant reader - so I started reading Magic Treehouse aloud to him - it's like hooking a fish w/your best bait!
Brad/3 - that's excellent, sharon (but then you are the doctoral candidate LOL)
Rudy - I also teach the kids the steps to be a dramatic reader. I tell them we are doing "tricks with your voice." We do loud/soft, fast/slow, punch/ pause, and ?/! The kids always try the strategies and improve on fluency quickly. think it is because we must give them some fluency tools.
Kim/K/SCal - i think i would be distracted by the metronome, brad.............
Mae - Ok Sharon - I have used high frequency words and moved them quickly.
Brad/3 - mae, try (at the risk of suggesting a book) Building Fluency: Lessons and Strategies for Reading Success: published by Scholastic, author Wiley Blevins. Just picked it up last Xmas
Rudy - Good approach Mae!!
RandyAk4 - The metranome just gives feedback on the time for the reader?
Sharon - put them in phrases, mae..... like "around the green tree"
Mae - The metronome doesn't make noise - at least my grandma's didn't
Kim/K/SCal - good suggestion, brad......
Kim/K/SCal - tick tick tick tick tick tick tick.......
Brad/3 - metronome makes noise like ticking clock (depending on how fast it's going, could be tick. . . . tock. . .tick. . . tock or tick tock tick tock or ticktockticktock
Kim/K/SCal - good visual, brad.........
Mae - I'll try the short phrases - well, he is reading Pigs aplenty, Pigs Galore! It's short phrases - they ryhme
Sharon - soo...... if he's add....... you'll blow his mind!
Sharon - soo...... if he's add....... you'll blow his mind!
Brad/3 - well, it's no dishtowel but. . .
RandyAk4 - Brad is the goal to help the student to read faster...more words between ticks? or am i still lost?
Mae - Funny - I can picture that metronome - light color wood...memories...
Kim/K/SCal - yes sharon....... he will explode. Could be messy.
Rudy - gotta log off to call my daughter. Talk next week. God bless, all
Brad/3 - randy, were you ever in a choir?
Mae - He is adhd and dyslexic
Kim/K/SCal - bye rudy........take care
Brad/3 - text to self connection mae
Mae - Bye Rudy
tick - hi every body
Brad/3 - bye rudy
Kim/K/SCal - Just thinking that brad
RandyAk4 - no brad and no musical knowledge at all. I can play a radio but thats about it.
Brad/3 - that's why, can you recall a metronome?
Kim/K/SCal - I said earlier Randy that I am the reason God invented CDs
Mae - My grandmother was a choir director
Brad/3 - tootie ta, kim
RandyAk4 - LOL@kim
Mae - I can see how it could work Brad - I might see if the music teachers have one
Mae - Or I could just use my ticking clock that drives me nuts! LOL!
Brad/3 - try it and if his head explodes, what the heck, that's one less reading problem you'll have to solve LOL
Mae - Geesh! I just realized that it's 11p.m.!
Sharon - oh lawd, mae....... what if you scar him for life and all he ever hears for an internal voice when he reads is "tick tock tick tock"?
Kim/K/SCal - time flies, mae
RandyAk4 - I used to test my kids to see how many words they could read in 1 minute on their grade level... It didn't seem fair but orders are orders.
Brad/3 - it's better than "no wire hangers" sharon
Kim/K/SCal - maybe he will fragment into MANY internal voices, sharon......
Mae - Randy - go to www.texasreading.org to see wpm and why
Kim/K/SCal - Then you will have MORE students to deal with................and get a book deal!
Alta Rose - Well, everyone, I have to go. I have an early day tomorrow, as my son has a Cub function. I won't be able to make it next week. Thanks--Talk to you in a couple weeks! (I'll have read more of MOT by then.)
Brad/3 - alta rose and alta rose/1. . . . . . . . . freaky, or are we being we visited by dorothy hall and pat cunningham?
Sharon - by alta rose
Mae - We have gymfest tommorow!
RandyAk4 - I will Mae... I doubt that there was any comprehension...Am I wrong?
Kim/K/SCal - yeah its cunningham cuz she KNEW i was talking about her.
Mae - goodnight Alta Rose
Mae - Oral fluency allows kids to attend to comprehension
Kim/K/SCal - g'night alta rose
Brad/3 - gymfest?
Alta Rose - Lol, Brad! My anti-virus had picked up on an intruder, so my hubby logged me off while he got rid of it, and then I came back on to say goodnight. The "Keeper of the Literary Crown" signs off! LOL.
Mae - gymnastics exhibition
Kim/K/SCal - Oh, man............ my snake wouldn't eat her fuzzy tonight so i put it in the tarantula cage to stay safe from the cat. But the tarantula ate it.
Brad/3 - remind me again, who am i looking for on may gazette?
Kim/K/SCal - "Reading something"
Mae - The Reading Puzzle
Alta Rose 1 - Mae, I'm going to read your article right now!
Brad/3 - i'm not touching that snakey fuzzy thing with a ten foot pole (cuckoo, cuckoo)
Mae - AAAARRRRGGG KIM - A snake?!!!
Alta Rose 1 -
Kim/K/SCal - yes........she is not a happy snake right now. i put a new substrate in her terrarium. she is clinging to her vine and giving me dirty snake looks.
RandyAk4 - I haven't made many of these meetings but I am curious if you have any particular part of MOT that is discussed from week to week. Or is it just free wheeling and open?
Brad/3 - it becomes more free wheeling as the weeks roll on, randy. LOL
Mae - That is where we do NOT think alike Kim - I don't even like pictures of snakes! YUCK!
Kim/K/SCal - ...and now i will have to go BACK out tomorrow and get her food.....
Sharon - we
Sharon - wer
Sharon - we
Brad/3 - substrate, kim's rolling out the quarter words tonight
Sharon - lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kim/K/SCal - Are you teasing us, Randy? We do discuss MOT. A lot. at various times......really. Freewheeling.........
Mae - Randy - we are freewheeling and lately - we have been reading so many books that it's becoming a hodgepodge of reading and writing!
RandyAk4 - shiver <<<:---------- dirty looks from a snake...
Sharon - we're into the questioning strategy right now on our mot yahoogroup emal ring... learning quite a bit
Brad/3 - what mailring, sharon?
Kim/K/SCal - I put little tiny ROCKS on her floor Brad. Instead of FAKE grass. And she doesn't MEAN it, Randy. She is very gentle and docile.
Sharon - yahoogroups...... mosaicteachers
Mae - Randy - we are all in different places, but we discuss strategies for reading and many of us have dived into Wondrous Words even though we said we save it for the summer. It's just too yummy!
RandyAk4 - Noooooo!! not teasing but if i knew where to read for next time I would feel like i knew what we were talking about...said my internal voice...the annoying one
Brad/3 - i might have to join
Sharon - judy is a member there and nan, too
Mae - I couldn't find that mailring Sharon.
Brad/3 - (sharon's shivering now)
Kim/K/SCal - sounds good, sharon............
RandyAk4 - brb
Sharon - you just go to yahoogroups and search for mosaicteachers, mae
Mae - Some people have read it already - others are just starting, and others are finishing up MOT
Kim/K/SCal - i told you to stop listening to that annoying inner voice.......sheesh..............I have read MOT twice. Always find something good. Right now I am reading Wondrous Words and have Reading with Meaning waiting in the wings.
Brad/3 - docile, more quarter words
Sharon - reading with meaning is a great read, to, kim
RandyAk4 - back
Mae - I still have the last chapter to go, but I stopped because I just couldn't wait to get to WW! Okay - I confess - I'm reading 4 different books and a Nora Roberts novel to boot (not to mention children's lit!)
Brad/3 - kim, do you use these in k?
Kim/K/SCal - she berry sweet snake brad.....nice snake ...... no bites
Kim/K/SCal - Well, Brad...... i do to an extent. i like the idea of the connections that good readers make and I model that constantly to my kids with success.
Sharon - mostly through read/think alouds, kim?
Mae - I've been doing some work w/visualization w/my kids
Sharon - mae, our files at the yahoogroup have some great ocean poetry for visualization you can download
Kim/K/SCal - i try to use simplified versions of the strategies with the kids also......... venn diagrams, compare/constrast...........
Mae - Kim - will you come to Texas? My daughter will be in kinder next year (but leave the snake okay).
Brad/3 - are you looking to leave k, kim
RandyAk4 - Wondrous Words??? Alaska gets these things so slowly... I just got a new Websters Dictionary copyright 1975.
Kim/K/SCal - yes sharon.........exactly. lots of shared reading, read alouds, poetry chanting, pocket charts, interactive writing, LOTS of read aloud and think aloud
Kim/K/SCal - snake comes, mae.
Mae - Wondrous Words by Katie Rae Wood - better off getting it from the Reading Lady. Amazon has had us all on back order.
Kim/K/SCal - I have been recruited to teach in another district. A K-1 combo..............
Brad/3 - i wish you taught k up here, kim, our kinders do not an ounce of writing
RandyAk4 - checking the piggy bank...shake shake shake...moth flies out
Kim/K/SCal - I use the stuff a LOT with my credential candidate students. the problem with so many of them is the lack of experience and lack of PASSION for reading.........
Brad/3 - some enter first without even knowing sounds
Brad/3 - lack of passion?
Kim/K/SCal - LOL randy.........brad goes to amazon and clicks on what he likes. then he licks the screen
Kim/K/SCal - I firmly believe that you CANNOT be a teacher of reading without a PASSION for reading.
Sharon - ack, brad!! recognition of letters and phonemic awareness are the top two indicators of reading success...... how are the K's there
Sharon - ack, brad!! recognition of letters and phonemic awareness are the top two indicators of reading success...... how are the K's there?
Mae - Kim - do you think most teachers see read alouds as an "extra" rather than crucial? I think they do and that is part of a big problem.
Brad/3 - what do you mean sharon
Kim/K/SCal - i can understand the lack of experience.....no text to self, text to world stuff, you know? overwhelmed by it all. but the lack of INTEREST, passion.........just sends me up a wall.
Mae - Brad - the first step to reading is making the letter-sound connection.
Mae - Kim - a lot of teachers lack passion for reading
Sharon - are your rising first graders capable of recognizing the letters and phonemic awareness...... BEFORE letter-soundconnection
Brad/3 - i am appalled that many teachers are not readers. I ask if they've read Mosaic or Strategies or mention authors and they look at you, like, "Are you nuts?"
Kim/K/SCal - Yes, mae, unfortunately i do.....i am trying to change that. i made them read and respond to cullinan's "read to me" book............wanted to use trelease but thought they might drop the class in fear and agony..............i do a huge spiel on the matthew effect
RandyAk4 - Its too true Brad
Brad/3 - how can we teach reading without being readers?
Mae - I try to talk about these books too, and other teachers say they are not about to read a book
Kim/K/SCal - i also had them design a colorful flyer they can use in the classroom to send to their parents about the benefits of reading aloud.........
RandyAk4 - sigh...Matthew Effect???
Brad/3 - sharon, from my impression, (I'm in kindergarten hall even though I teach 3rd) the answer is no, they cannot recognize many letters or phonemes
Kim/K/SCal - tell me about it ..... i cannot believe the apathy and lack of interest from so many teachers!!!
Kim/K/SCal - phonemeic awareness and mastery of letter/sounds crucial for going onto first grade........
Mae - My son (3rd grade) is an avid reader and I believe it's because he sees BOTH of his parents read. We also read aloud to him daily. In fact - son and dad are on the 4th Harry Potter.
Kim/K/SCal - You want to know about the Matthew Effect, Randy?
Sharon - there's a serious problem..... those are the top two indicators of reading success...... but note i said phonemic awareness and not phoneme recognition
Kim/K/SCal - You want to know about the Matthew Effect, Randy?
Brad/3 - i understand difference sharon, just misread
RandyAk4 - Kim I have never heard of anything with that name...
Kim/K/SCal - You do know about it...... I am just naming it for you.
Brad/3 - it really puts them behind by the time they get to me
Mae - My daughter knows all of her letters, makes several letter-sound connections, recognizes that print is the words we are saying, and can spell her name - I think that we are in good shape for kinder. She loves books too.
Sharon - i can see why, brad
Kim/K/SCal - Okay.....think about Matthew 25........"unto him that is given much more will be given........unto him that isnot given more will be taken away.......?"
Brad/3 - inner city, sharon
Mae - Kim- what is your opinion of Open Court?
Sharon - great start, mae... add a little phonemic awareness play and she should be set
Kim/K/SCal - In other words, the RICH get richer and the POOR get poorer. Kids who arrive in Kinder with the necessary literacy experiences (1000 hours) will be ready to read. Reading will be successful for them and rewarding. They will do more and get better.
RandyAk4 - I've heard that before but never related it to kids or reading. hmmmm
Brad/3 - their EISS scores usually place them one to two years behind the majority of entering kindergarteners
Brad/3 - so, it's not that I'm saying the kindergarten faculty don't do good job, considering how they're coming in, but it forever places us TWO YEARS BEHIND
RandyAk4 - And the poorer ones will drop further and further behind... OK I get it. Matther Effect...making notes
Kim/K/SCal - The poor, conversely, arrrive without the necessary experiences.........so they don't catch on. we have to provide the experiences. they don't thrive...the rich pull ahead. THEN, the rich start to read. The poor do not. the poor hate reading becasue they are unsuccessful at it...............gap widens.
Mae - I call it the "football game" - you are either on the bench, in the game, or ahead of the game, and where you started has a lot to do with where you are at. My older kids learn that it is where they are going that counts.
Kim/K/SCal - Okay? The "rich" kids hit fifth grade and read something like 1.5 milllion words per school year if they score in the 90th percentile. 400,000 in the 50th percentile.........the poor kid? 58,000 words!!!!!!
Brad/3 - that's a good analogy, Mae, may work with some of my boys
Sharon - i teach at a school with the majority of the population coming from a government housing project...... we consistently score in the 80-90 percentile
Mae - I've used it w/4th and 5th. I've seen 5th graders go from 2nd grade reading level to 6th in a few months
Sharon - by
Sharon - by
Kim/K/SCal - Think, RANDY of all the ideas, and vocab and concepts are NOT reaching the brains of the "poor" kid.....the rich get richer, the poor get poorer.....................
Brad/3 - good for you sharon. I am not blaming population (after all I chose to work there), I'm just saying. . . by the time they come to me, they are fundamentally lacking.
Sharon - by "we". i mean my class
Kim/K/SCal - i don't mean "rich " as in money,
Kim/K/SCal - i mean rich in experiences
Mae - Brad - what grade are you in?
Brad/3 - what grade sharon
Brad/3 - 3
Sharon - 1st
Kim/K/SCal - this is the Matthew Effect........termed by Keith Stanovich
RandyAk4 - Just out of curiosity how much time do you spend ...teaching reading...letting your class do reading work ... and USSR reading inn a day? I teach reading maybe 20 minutes...we work on reading for 20 but we silent read 30-40 minutes...
Mae - Two things Brad - Read Aloud every single day (and never feel guilty), and get kids reading on their ZAPD
Kim/K/SCal - Mae......... i don't care for Open Court as THE literacy program.................
Brad/3 - what do you think is the reason for your effectiveness sharon
Kim/K/SCal - I take a balanced literacy approach. PIck and choose what I want..........
Sharon - guided reading 45 mins, working with words 30 mins, writing 30 mins, silent reading at their levels 50 mins
Mae - Kim - our 1st grade uses it and they really come to 2nd in excellent shape - they also use Fountas and Pinnel and Cunningham' s stuff
Kim/K/SCal - Yes.......so they balance it.
Mae - 2nd grade doesn't even dust off their kit
Brad/3 - wow, and how do you squeeze it all in in order to spend that much time on reading
Mae - Balance is the key
Sharon - high expecations and preparing them for the format of the test
Mae - We read all day!
Kim/K/SCal - sounds balanced to me, sharon.......plus you are PASSIONATE and that makes all the difference
RandyAk4 - I make a lot of the 4th grade Social studies work part of my reading program...health and science too but not as much
Brad/3 - are you saying that in an admirable way, mae, (2nd doesn't even dust off the kit)
Sharon - i integrate science and social studies into my reading time mostly..... thoughwe also have experiments we love to do
Kim/K/SCal - Allington says that 80% of their reading in a day should be at their fluency (independent) level............so lots of SSR neeeded.
Mae - Reading is in every subject area - it connects w/ writing, it is the content of social studies and science, it is the problem solving in math
Brad/3 - pssst kim
Kim/K/SCal - hands on is good sharon...........kids respond to this. then connect it with literacy somehow
Mae - Yes - Brad - the kids have a STRONG foundation at our school and it makes a noticeable difference
Sharon - yes, kim....... and thats when i began seing big jumps in their reading improvement when i spent the time letting them read
Kim/K/SCal - sorry brad.......i've been offf on a rant
Brad/3 - but do you like open court, mae
Kim/K/SCal - Open Court's phonemic awareness stuff is good.............but ANY good teacher does that stufff.
Mae - Kim - that makes sense - if only textbook companies would figure this out and the fact that nonfiction should be 2 years below their level
RandyAk4 - Kim what grade do you teach?
Kim/K/SCal - Helllllooooo..........yes Mae, you are right....
Brad/3 - mae--yes yes yes, more nonfiction and easier
Kim/K/SCal - Randy I teach Kindergarten. I also do an after-school remedial reading program for at risk second graders. Plus I teach a college classs
Mae - I really haven't ever looked at it or used it. I just felt that our 1st grade was building a rock solid foundation , so I started asking about what they were using - and Open Court came up.
Brad/3 - i will be supplementing with the readinga-z.com books a lot next year because they have mucho nonfiction
Mae - I like reading a-z
Kim/K/SCal - yes......nonfiction so important for vocab...........ideas............concepts..........interest............
RandyAk4 - I've been swimming neck deep in nonfiction studing Ancient Civilizations. You are right about it needing to be at a lower level.
Kim/K/SCal - Must, so they can pick up the vocabulary and internalize the ideas.............consolidate their sight word vocabs
RandyAk4 - WOW!@Kim....tippinng my hat
Brad/3 - i like to use nonfic in guided reading for those reasons kim states, and because they often choose fiction in their SSR, so it sort've balances
Sharon - and btw, our yahoogroup has a great powerpoint presentation you can download from our files for nonfiction conventions
Mae - That is why people always complain about textbooks being too hard, and it's why so many kids have such a hard time in jr. high - they can't read the @#1@* book!
Kim/K/SCal - text is moving at a snail's pace here......................jumpy jerky..........hard to type
Brad/3 - mae is there a pic w/your article?
Kim/K/SCal - But boy, mae, those politicians can say that they have RAISED THOSE STANDARDS
Brad/3 - ot
Mae - I don't do pics! LOL!
RandyAk4 - Raising the Standards is the easy part.... meeting them...wellll...
Mae - Give me 5 minutes w/ just one politician...
Kim/K/SCal - the remedial reading is going bye bye for now...........big changes in my district...........i have been recruited to work elsewhere. I am jumping ship. scary
RandyAk4 - Is the ship sinking?
Kim/K/SCal - tell more sharon
Mae - I believe that we are heading into difficult times.
Kim/K/SCal - ship is sinking randy..........a morass................very sad
RandyAk4 - sounds familiar Kim... sad to say
Sharon - it has slides of examples of nonfiction conventions like captions, photographs cutaways, diagrams, etc to present to a class
Brad/3 - elaborate mae
Kim/K/SCal - i feel like a rat......but these people WANT me, VALUE me, ask me questions....pick my brain. my district wants me to shut up cuz i make them tired.
Mae - Nancy Polette has done a lot of work w/analyzing nonfiction for kids.
Kim/K/SCal - text structure different in non-fiction...........kids brains wired for "story."
RandyAk4 - Over the years i gave up trying to improve the district and just concentrated onn my own kids in class.... save all you can...if you can
Brad/3 - i agree kim, that's why i'm spending these last weeks on different nonfic text structures
Brad/3 - mae, what do you mean difficult times
Mae - Brad - we have good info. (researched) to make education better, but the only think anyone wants is test results and accountability - the two big ticket vote words. The politicians are clueless - they are just hanging onto words. We are heading for a major teacher shortage.
Sharon - well goodnight all...... sleep sweet when you sleep
Kim/K/SCal - yes randy........... i agree............and i did that for years. but now....we have a new board......slash and burn.
Mae - goodnight Sharon
Brad/3 - tongue twister, sharon?
Kim/K/SCal - same sharon......back next week?
Sharon - *grin* or maybe it'sjust the ambien kickin' in!
RandyAk4 - I need to scratch gravel too...All yall stay warm.... looking forward to next week
Kim/K/SCal - randy take your moose with you
Sharon - i'll be here, kim...... enjoyed it!
Brad/3 - I think you're right, Mae. That's all anyone talks about. How about making politicians "accountable"
Mae - You know - I really think that we have the power right here to start making changes. AWARENESS is they key. Teachers need to be aware of the power tools out there just waiting for them.
Kim/K/SCal - and bring a pooper scooper next time
Mae - Send us some cool air Randy
Brad/3 - too often mae we just shut our door
Kim/K/SCal - sharon..........i need a good research question..mull it for me
RandyAk4 - Moose lives in my yard now... he's a good excuse when I'm late....blocking the driveway
Brad/3 - it's really a divided profession, I've found
Brad/3 - There are those of us who are in a "profession" and others in a "job" for the paycheck and summers off
Kim/K/SCal - YES BRAD...........reading my mind again.............
RandyAk4 - cool air for Mae.....scooper for Kim...Anything for you Brad?
Brad/3 - those of us who read and attempt to improve and those who say, "Are you nuts?"
Brad/3 - (and those who lick the screen)
Mae - I'm opening it and talking loud. The good thing is that the powers that be in my district actually know what I'm talking about. It's the teachers that still need to catch on. Some are willing, others well, are not. They are much better than where I used to be though.
Brad/3 - randy, I'll take a metronome
Kim/K/SCal - Brad will take a mooseburger, randy
RandyAk4 - tissue for Brad's screen...ok got it
Mae - We are to go getters Brad!
Kim/K/SCal - LOLOL Randy.......post a good joke tomorrorw
Brad/3 - no cheese
Mae - I want crab and Halibut!
Kim/K/SCal - Amen to Brother Brad! And a blessing to Brother Randy.............
Brad/3 - Mae, what can we do? There's so much apathy
RandyAk4 - OK how about some snowballs @@@@@@@@@@@@mae@@@@@@@@Kim@@@@@@@@@Brad@@@@@@@Sharon@@@@@@@@
Mae - Actually, Randy, could you send me some slide of the northern lights - I lost mine
Brad/3 - lol
Mae - In Texas - the apathy is caused by TAAS!
RandyAk4 - Nytol....poof
Kim/K/SCal - You have to surround your self with good people.................together you create results. The others start to notice. at least this is what i hope.
Brad/3 - how long have you taught mae
Mae - Kim - I hope you are right. Our principal is starting a book study w/a GT book for next year. About 8 people have signed up. It could start something good!
Mae - 7 years. What about you?
Brad/3 - one
Kim/K/SCal - my new district is very cozy.......they seem to talk a lot.........to each other. strong leadership
Brad/3 - and how do you stay so fresh, mae? (no douche jokes, please)
Kim/K/SCal - i tried to do that, mae, one of the reasons i am leaving.
Brad/3 - let me guess, because you READ
Mae - Wow Brad - you are so on the right road!
Kim/K/SCal - ONE?
Brad/3 - uno
Mae - Read - and Tnet of course!
Kim/K/SCal - Jeez, Brad. I stand all amazed. You are going to be the teacher to remember in your district.
Kim/K/SCal - Seriously.
Mae - I'm ridiculously fascinated w/reading and writing.
Kim/K/SCal - Don't let the doofuses get you down.
Mae - Brad really will be famous!
Kim/K/SCal - will always be doofuses.
Brad/3 - blush
Kim/K/SCal - Me too mae
Mae - Brad - you are from Tx right?
Brad/3 - ohio
Kim/K/SCal - I have taught for 8 years now.
Mae - Kim - even my husband teases me!
Kim/K/SCal - Went in late...........back to school at 29..........always a reader
Mae - Oh, maybe it was Rudy who was from Tx.
Brad/3 - my school is really a "down" place and it's so depressing.
Mae - Kim - me too!
Kim/K/SCal - mine has no idea about what I do............i overwhelm him
Kim/K/SCal - can y ou find another school brad?
Brad/3 - the problem is, kim, it doesn't have to be. it operates on a lot of hear-say
Mae - Brad - keep the enthusiasm and lean on Tnet for support. I was in a real downer of a district for 5 years. - eventually you will move on to bigger and better
Brad/3 - besides, i told myself this is probably where a person like me is needed most
Kim/K/SCal - yes..........start small brad
Kim/K/SCal - you are right
Mae - Just hang in there Brad!
Brad/3 - a lot of rumor
Kim/K/SCal - the problem in my district is rooted in the community culture
Mae - Kim - you have your masters right?
Brad/3 - elaborate kim
Kim/K/SCal - yes...........i am one class away from a reading specialist certification and second emphasis area..... my M.A. is in curriculum and instruction
Mae - I have a Master Reading Teacher certification - it's not a masters, but a specialized certificate. I am going to start on my masters this summer. With two kids - it may take forever! I would really love to teach adjunct like you.
Kim/K/SCal - satisfied with good enough...........lot of generational poverty...........mean-spiritedness, low expectations. Poor leadership, coupled with a fear of getting parents really involved so that TOGETHER changes can be made.
Brad/3 - who fears getting parents involved?
Mae - You know what it is Kim? There are more kids than there are teachers w/passion and leaders who know how to lead.
Kim/K/SCal - I fell into it mae..............the instructor in my action research class is also the Dean. She asked me to teach the ED 500 cuz she is too busy and the old teacher has health problems. i have a good reputation and a PASSION that is well known......
Brad/3 - amen
Mae - I will probably make students in my classes nuts, because I will ask questions and want to actually discuss things!
Kim/K/SCal - brad...the powers that be..............i have tried and tried to get family literacy programs going, family reading nights, extended library hours.................."that won't work here.............." rolling of eyes.
Mae - The classes I take that is...
Brad/3 - if i even suggested action research, my faculty would say, "huh"
Kim/K/SCal - yeah.......... i tried to talk about "big questions" in the lunch room ........................."huh?" and then smart aleck remarks
Mae - Kim -I know what you mean. Most people just don't get it. I really think the passionate teachers leave the classroom because they are looking for someone to "get it" and they believe they can pass on their passion this way. The key is to stay in touch w/the classroom - be relatable.
Brad/3 - we're nerds, lol
Mae - nerd girl here lol
Brad/3 - i think you're onto something mae
Kim/K/SCal - power cliques very anti intellectual.............oh they all LIKE me...............but i am like a "pet" or an "eccentric aunt."
Mae - Kim - I am right there w/you!
Kim/K/SCal - yes...........i agree.
Brad/3 - thank god, no cliques at my school
Brad/3 - just all of us against this wacko teacher LOL
Mae - We should gather all of our passionate readers and start our own school!
Brad/3 - and she is whacko (cuckoo, cuckoo, whoo boy)
Kim/K/SCal - yet the neighboring district seeks me out and WANTS my ideas.
Brad/3 - interesting
Kim/K/SCal - have a charter school.....................
Kim/K/SCal - hears internal voices
Mae - We have good teachers - they just find it funny that I like to read all of this stuff - they won't read, but they will borrow my ideas!
Brad/3 - mae, oddly enough (for me anyway) i have found so many teachers AREN'T creative
Kim/K/SCal - true brad
Kim/K/SCal - do you like to do directed drawing with your kids
Mae - We have a mix - some are very creative and others don't have a creative bone in their body
Brad/3 - not familiar
Mae - We have been drawing for visualization
Brad/3 - yes, but that's part of what attrracted me, so i found it odd
Kim/K/SCal - Mona Brookes......Directed Drawing with Children. Went to a workshop...............fantastic!!
Brad/3 - ill have to look up
Mae - You guys - it's MIDNIGHT! I'm melting...
Kim/K/SCal - Helps with all kinds of intellectual things.............................
Mae - website kim?
Brad/3 - another book OHMYGAWD
Kim/K/SCal - Me too.............so tired. I just hate to leave you............................
Brad/3 - i feel the same way
Kim/K/SCal - website.................um.............i will find it and post it to the prof boara
Brad/3 - after last week, really started looking forward to chat this week
Mae - I now have 4 on my must read list and 4 that I'm reading, and I am really getting into this Nora Roberts book (ner)!
Brad/3 - dishtowels
Kim/K/SCal - can't typehere
Kim/K/SCal - can't typehere
Kim/K/SCal - can't typehere
Kim/K/SCal - dosjtpwe
Mae - I'm tired too. Let's call it a night. Until next week. Mae
Brad/3 - it's just nice to know there are others (nerds) like me out there
Kim/K/SCal - ((bradand mae)))
Brad/3 - ok, good night everyone
Mae - Yes - Brad - this is nerdville - same time, same place next week! (LOL!)
Kim/K/SCal - you are not alone
Kim/K/SCal -
