kathyb - Hi, Rudy, I am here for the MOT chat.
kathyb - Blah/hardday, are you here for the MOT chat, too?
kathyb - Where is everyone?
Rudy - Hi Kathyb. i'm her for the MOT chat.
kathyb - I have MOT, but haven't read much yet. How about you?
kathyb - I came for the chat, so I may do more "listening" instead.
Rudy - I've read all but the last chapter. Love what I've read so far!!
kathyb - I teach 1st. What grade are you teaching?
Rudy - I wonder where all the chatters are?
kathyb - Do you have STW also?
Rudy - I'm teaching reading 1-4.
kathyb - I don't know, but BOY is someone going to be in trouble if they don't show up!
Rudy - Yes, I have STW, too.
Rudy - Are you using any of the ideas?
Rudy - Hi judy3ca
judy3ca - Hi! I'm just here for a few minutes.
kathyb - Several chatters a few weeks ago were also chatting about WONDROUS WORDS? I don't have it, yet. But, I sure want it.
kathyb - Hi, Judy
judy3ca - Oh, kathy, that was me! And I did a wonderful lesson from Wondrous Words on Thursday. I love the book!
Rudy - Me too Kathyb. I am going to buy that book next. sounds good.
naneb - Hi Judy
judy3ca - Hi nan!
kathyb - hi, naneb
Rudy - Tell us about it judy3ca.
kathyb - I teach 1st, what about you naneb?
naneb - 6th grade special ed
Rudy - Hi naneb.
naneb - Hi Rudy and kathy
Rudy - I teach reading 1-4.
kathyb - I must get some serious reading time set aside soon, or my summer will be gone and I will still be on the outside LOOKING IN!
judy3ca - Ray, the author, describes her version of choral reading--very different than the traditional version--as a way to help kids see striking language. We tried it just like she recommends and I was amazed at my little third graders ability to pick out the good language.
judy3ca - Wow, this color is hard to read--is there a way to change it?
Debbie - Good evening folks!
Rudy - Hi Debbie.
judy3ca - Hi Debbie.
kathyb - hi, debbie. I teach 1st, what about you?
Debbie - grade 4 and 5 ( split)
kathyb - Judy, now I am really anxious to read the book, WW. I would love to know more about her description of choral reading.
Rudy - I think MOT makes good sense. I've been able to try a few of the strategies. They work!
naneb - Judy, you have to logoff and log back in to change colors
judy3ca - I agree, Rudy! I LOVE MOT.
Debbie - I can't keep up with you, Judy. I finished STW and am almost done with MOT. I have WW but haven't cracked it yet.
judy3ca - Thanks, Nan.
Debbie - hi Sam
Rudy - I love MOT, too. Seems like strong words, but LOVe really is true!!
Debbie - I love MOT also. It is such a fun way to teach. My students really "get into reading" now.
Rudy - Hi Sam.
Sam - Hi Everyone!
kathyb - I think I am reading by OSMOSIS... you know I carry it to work in my bag and I carry it home in my bag, but it rarely gets out of the bag!
judy3ca - Debbie, LOL, I read MOT almost 3 years ago (for the first time). You should see my poor well-loved edition (however, it is autographed).
judy3ca - Hi Sam
kathyb - hi, Sam. I teach 1st, how about you?
judy3ca - Nan, are you working on a strategy right now? We're still doing inference.
Rudy - Yes, judy3ca. i carry my book back and forth, too. I've been reading Richard Allington's book about Struggling Readers too.
kathyb - AUTOGRAPHED! What is that? LOL. Yes, I really do know, but I would have to travel over 300 miles to see anyone GREAT!
naneb - we have been doing state tests all week, I am going back to determining importance next week with a book about castles, we will end the year with a big mediveal fair
judy3ca - kathy, Ellin Keene is well worth travelling to see/hear.
Debbie - You know what I love the most about it,? I now have kids going to the library to check out trade books on topics of interest. The topics s\come from their questions as we read. I see kids reading about eclipses, sharks, the rain forest and even the human ear!
judy3ca - Hi Brad!
kathyb - I haven't read Struggling Readers... lately, but when I did, I really liked it.
Sam - I teach 4th grade.
Brad/3 - hey judy (and everyone)
judy3ca - Debbie, that is so cool! And I just love the connections my kids make between books we've read this year--just like "real" readers do!
Rudy - Today I worked on inference using Weisner's June 29, 1999. The kids loved it.
Rudy - Hi Brad.
Brad/3 - I just started some inferencing yesterday, judy, nothing formal
judy3ca - Ah, Rudy, I love David Wiesner's books!
Brad/3 - my fave is the one with the frogs, what is that one?
kathyb - I have a fishing corner in my room. You know... fishing chairs, pond shower curtain, and a fishing tackle basket for my "BLESSED BOOKS".
judy3ca - Tuesday
Debbie - You absolutely moust read the book "Knots on a Counting Rope " to your kids. It is great for inferences. They must infer that the boy in the story is blind. You should see their faces when the infer and "get it" . It is great!
Rudy - I used George and Martha for inference, too. think I used those books because they were mentioned in STW.
Brad/3 - O
Brad/3 - I'll have to look that one up, (Knots), who is the author?
Debbie - Bill Martin Jr.
judy3ca - Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault
Brad/3 - O?
judy3ca - Brad, what does O mean?
Rudy - Can't remember the name judy.
kathyb - David W's new book got the Caldecott... THREE LITTLE PIGS (I think is the title, or is it THREE LITTLE BEARS?)
Brad/3 - have no idea, i'm making fun of myself, I guess i must've typed O and hit enter and not known it. LOL
kathyb - LUCY'S PICTURE is another great inference book. She makes a textured picture for her Grandfather. It never says he is blind, but those that understand pick up on it.
judy3ca - It's The Three Pigs. I love it, too! We used a bunch of 3 pigs stories for inference--and one of my kids wrote that the author's message is "Stay in your own story."
Rudy - Love Knots on a Counting Rope. One time used it with a knotted rope. Had the kids shut their eyes and feel the knots. Didn't think about it for inference. Thanks. I'll get it again.
judy3ca - Must go join family--night all!
kathyb - KNOTS is a wonderful book and GREAT illustrations.
Brad/3 - night judy
naneb - we did inference with character traits, they had to find an example from the text that helped them infer
Rudy - Night judy.
Debbie - g'night judy
Brad/3 - inference is a difficult subject for them to grasp formally I think
kathyb - Judy, I am laughing so hard, you may hear THUNDER! LOL!
Rudy - I love how sensitive I am to the places one can infer in different texts since I read MOT. there's a good feeling about this deeper acquaintance with the strategies since MOT.
Brad/3 - I mean, they're doing it all the time, it's just never been picked apart and explained and given a label before, so it almost confuses them. Do you find this?
Brad/3 - why did nan go?
kathyb - Yes, many of my 1st, just didn't get why she HAD to make a texture picture. They thought it was great that she did, but had a hard time figuring out why it was so important to the grandfather.
Debbie - I agree Rudy. I am so much more aware of such things now, too. I can't believe I never formally taught them before. It makes so much sense to do so.
Debbie - I have older kids , Brad so they don't seem to get confused.
kathyb - Hi, Sam.
Rudy - I sure am able to help the kids understand the use of the different strategies now. I chuckle at how many inference or questioning places I read between the lines now. It's FUN!!
Debbie - It literally is more enjoyable to teach!
Brad/3 - curious, what did everyone do before MOT
Rudy - YES!
Debbie - I always did a lot of written responses asking students to put themselves into the story. I was not specific enough about exactly how to do that.
Brad/3 - there goes the neighborhood. LOL, hi KIM
kathyb - Hi, KIM! Where have you been?
Rudy - I've been reading a lot of Pinnell and fountas for the last couple of years. Learned bunches. Also have been reading Cunningham's Phonics They Use. Good stuff!
Debbie - I also did a lot of activities witht he story which I thought had to do with comprehension. Now, I think they were just that--- actvities without real learnign taking place
Rudy - Diddo, Debbie.
Kim/K/SCal - So sorry......'puter problems. Stupid son left me to try to fix it.
kathyb - Debbie, I agree.
Kim/K/SCal - I fixed it by turning it off and going to fume in the other room.
Rudy - Lately I've been having some good success with wiggly 1st graders doing Reader's Theater.
Kim/K/SCal - I tried to call you Kathy to tell you I couldn't log on.......you were online, LOL
kathyb - Yep, I can't afford two lines... buying too many BOOKS! LOL
Kim/K/SCal - So......hi to everyone.....!
kathyb - Kim, I am glad that your "fuming" helped!
Rudy - LOL!!
Brad/3 - shall we all sign in? Hi, my name is Brad, and I'm a book-a-holic.
Debbie - well, it is getting late here in PA- - 11:20 or so, WAY past my bedtime. NIght!
Kim/K/SCal - Something I said, Debbie.........jeez
Rudy - At school many just roll their eyes at me!!
Brad/3 - in fact, i've been licking so long here, I was actually considering making a trip to a bookstore tomorrow
Debbie - LOL Kim. I hate fumes !!
Kim/K/SCal - HI BRAD. My name is Kim, and I TOO am a book-a-holic.
kathyb - I sure enjoyed your thoughts, Debbie Bye
Kim/K/SCal - Brad you will be physically removed from the bookstore if you LICK the books there.
Debbie - Brad, I just was exploring Amazon .com and spent another 4o bucks. Look out whne hubby sees it! LOL
Rudy - Do a lot of the teachers you work with read books too?
Kim/K/SCal - My fuming was INWARDLY directed, Debbie............ see you next week then?
Brad/3 - I actually had a kid in class this week who slammed a book down onto the shelf and I said the next time he did that (jokingly, of course) he would have to kiss the book thrree times and make a formal apology
kathyb - Hi, My name is KathyB and my daughters say that I own enough books, that I could have a Book Sale and sell them for $1 each. I would make enough money to pay for their college! YIKES!
Rudy - LOL. Kathyb.
Brad/3 - the problem is, I need bookshelves.
Brad/3 - they're starting to take over the floor
Rudy - The florr is a great place to stack books. A pile to the ceiling is good, then you start another stack!
Rudy - Woops, I mean floor.
kathyb - I had to bring SOME of my books home -- don't ask why -- I have 14 ten gallon Rubbermaid tubs in my hall, and I still have more books at school. BTW, I went to the bookstore and bought three more books TODAY!
Brad/3 - kathyb, you ARE sad
kathyb - I hated bring my books home YES. I love to read books over and over as they fit the situation.
Rudy - You are hooked Kathyb!
Rudy - Me too.
Brad/3 - I think kathyb deserves her 30-book chip, don't you?
Rudy - I don't know what that is Brad/3
kathyb - My grandchildren, should I ever have any, will know that their grandmother loved BOOKS!
Brad/3 - AA reference
Rudy - Oh!
Brad/3 - did debbie log off? her name;s still at top
kathyb - In my "other life" on earth, I want to come back as a Children's Librarian.
Brad/3 - (and after this week, I may need to)
Rudy - Keep reading folks. Bedtime for me. Talk with you next week. God bless.
kathyb - Hi, LAvin. What grade do you teach? I teach 1st.
lavin - I am on leave for the first time in 13 years. I did teach 1st at one time
bugsy - I really like reading In Style. Does anyone read it?
bugsy - This month there is an article on self tanners
kathyb - Night you all... I'll keep reading...
