Teresa/2/OK - Hi, anyone working on Entry 1, literacy?
js - I have been working on it.
Teresa/2/OK - I am so confused on how to organize this entry.
Teresa/2/OK - hi, Terri/K
Terri/K - Hi all, just started literacy today
Teresa/2/OK - How is your's coming js and Terri?
Terri/K - Have chosen students and some work samples
Teresa/2/OK - Is Jeff still on here?
Terri/K - I have really just started to think/work on this entry other than collecting work
js - I've been working on it. I had a mentor look at it and give me some suggestions. What ?'s do you have?
Teresa/2/OK - How did they organize it, talk about all the different strengths and weaknesses? Did they have any helpful ideas? I am a scatter brain I guess.
Teresa/2/OK - I've analyzed my work samples, asked questions, but when I begin to write is seems disjointed and unorganized. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong and how to make it flow.
Teresa/2/OK - Hi, Kristen and Jan
JanKWV - Hi.. Teresa,, I know what you mean by disjointed and unorganized...
Teresa/2/OK - What are you all working on?
Teresa/2/OK - Do you feel that way too, Jan?
Terri/K - You are way ahead of me Teresa. For Social studies I just went through and answered the quesitons in order. I haven't started to organize yet. Any tips you have will be appreciated!
JanKWV - My box is due Feb 15th.. so I am rewriting, rediting everything...
Teresa/2/OK - Aaahh, I'd be pulling my hair out (or losing it) if my box were due that soon!
JanKWV - I'm going to have to shoot another science video this week... my 1st one showed to much of me, talking, and not enough of the kids inquiry.. they were observing more than inquiring
Terri/K - Yikes, Jan! I am not due til April.
JanKWV - What hair??:0
js - I looked at the sample questions, and used those as a guide. For example, one student I featured was reading at first grade level. I stated how I found that information, and then how I would help her improve in her low areas. What I did, why I did it, and what impact did it have.
Terri/K - I have a friend reading my social studies. I am trying to tape for science. And just today I started to look closer at literacy.
Teresa/2/OK - Well, Terri, you're ahead of me on SS. I haven't thought beyond my unit on that one. Just figured out what they wanted over Christmas break
Terri/K - Same problem with science, too much of me talking
JanKWV - I thought it was going to be a good one, I used a Foss kit on trees.. The kids are really engaged, but.. not inquiring.. so I started a new unit this week, ramps and balls.. hopefully it will be better
Teresa/2/OK - js, what sample questions do you mean? The entry questions? Did you just take one of your questions and answer everything about that and then move on to your next question about the child?
Terri/K - Hi Kristen
Kristin - Hi everyone..finally got on this correctly. I have some questions about group sizes
Teresa/2/OK - Hi, Kristen, we're discussing science, ss, and literacy
Kristin - In the ss video can I have groups smaller than 6? As long as I show more than six children?
Terri/K - Jan, I did sink and float last week and the kids were involved, but they didn't ask much.
Teresa/2/OK - What questions do you have about group sizes?
Terri/K - They didn't make any connections about what kinds of things sank or floated. I don't think I let them "mess around" enough.
Teresa/2/OK - I think you can show groups of four as long as you pan to groups at other tables to show all children engaged in the activity
JanKWV - I guess that's the clue.. let them take the lead... not easy for teachers to do that I guess.
Kristin - Because it says (in one place in I think the Getting Started part) that you have to have no less than 6 students..my study group wasn't sure
Teresa/2/OK - Terri, on your sink and float, start out the questioning and then let them add to it. Young kids have a hard time with questions. I used ice balloons to get my kids asking questions. They loved it!
js - Yes, the entry questions underneath the italized ones. I took each question answered it the moved on to the next question.
JanKWV - Ice balloons sound interesting.. tell me more!
Terri/K - I am wondering about filming the groups again now that they have had some experience just messing around with the objects. I should have given then some gree time with the water before I tryed filming
Terri/K - Thats free not gree!
JanKWV - ooops.. my computer it acting weird.. gotta log off
Teresa/2/OK - I filled balloons with water and froze them for two days in the freezer, two balloons per group. They got one to play with and I gave them a tub of water and a bunch of stuff to mess around with like salt, sugar, flashlights, etc. They had to ask questions about what they wanted to try with the ice balloons and the next day I gave them a new one and let them try out the question they voted on. Clear as mud?
Teresa/2/OK - I didn't remember seeing that in Getting Started on the groups not smaller than 6, I guess I better reread that
Teresa/2/OK - Where did everybody go?
js - I don't think it said groups couldn't be less than 6, but there had to be more than 6 students taking part.
JanKWV - okay.. I rebooted.. I'm back
Terri/K - sorry, I just remembered I was copying a tape. had to go turn it off
JanKWV - Teresa.. I like your ice balloons... whad did your video show?
Terri/K - I can't find where it gives any number as min for small groups.
Terri/K - I thought you just had to show or explain in your writing how you provided others with same experience.
JanKWV - It was told to me.. if you don't show all your kids, you better explain whrere they were and how your gave them the same opportunities...
JanKWV - So, not wanting to take any chances.. I included all the kids, but they were seated at tables in cooperative groups
Terri/K - I am doing some ice things with penguins soon. maybe I will try adding the ice balloons when we do the ice stuff
js - Terri, Jan that's what I have heard. I had my whole class involved.
azdrama - hi everyone!!!!!!!!!!
Terri/K - I am doing science in small groups but did whole group for SS cause I thought I could show community better
Terri/K - I azdrama!
Debbie Mc. - Hi everybody!
azdrama - HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO?
js - Hi
Debbie Mc. - sinetag, are you still here?
azdrama - HEY WHATS GOIN ON?
Terri/K - Okay, who else has words of wisdom
JanKWV - Have you already assessed?
azdrama - I DO I DO PICK ME PICK ME
smccubbi - What are some of the SS/Art projects that you are doing for this entry?
Terri/K - No assessment til end of June
Debbie Mc. - I'm not sure about words of wisdom but I might be able to answer some easy questions.
smccubbi - Sorry for the lack of protocal. I just jumped in.
Terri/K - I did occupations. Kids drew chosen job and we also made up a song.
Debbie Mc. - smccubbi, there is no protocol as long as the discussion is about the National board process.
JanKWV - We had to assess.. before the box was due.. I'm not sure that was such a great idea.. I've learned so much working on entries since I tested on Nov 4th. Testing had to be completed by 12/31, box due 2/15
sinetag - hi i'm back
sinetag - was sent to do some "honey-do's"
Debbie Mc. - Jan, you're exactly right. The process is a learning thing.
azdrama - PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE, YOU CAN ADD THAT TO YOUR WORDS OF WISDOM
Debbie Mc. - Hey, sinetag! Good to "see" you.
sinetag - you too
sinetag -
Terri/K - Jan, you amaze me. I am learning a great deal as I work on entries also.
JanKWV - I did citizenship... Little Red Hen.. responsbility, murals, puppets, and the video shows the kids working on teams making loaves of bread....What a mess! but it was great fun.. and it really shows them cooperating
Debbie Mc. - If you have science questions, now's the time to ask. sinetag is a resident expert.
JanKWV - The assessor might not recognize my driver's liscence picture.. I have flour on my face..and apron...
js - I did cooperation, and choosing fairly, students drew pictures of unique Fl. animals and placed them on a map.
JanKWV - Sinetag... I mentioned earlier I was going to have to retape science... To much of me talking, not enough inquiry . the kids were engaged, but I ran my mouth to much.. can you give us some advice?
azdrama - WHY IS THE SKY BLUE?
Debbie Mc. - remember that social studies also has big ideas.
sinetag - what was the lesson jan?
Debbie Mc. - js and jan, why do students need to cooperate and have citizenship skills?
Terri/K - Sinetag, I need same advise as Jan.
Debbie Mc. - I'm just throwing that question out to see if you can dig deeper for why you taught it.
azdrama - THEY DONT, THERES THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION
Debbie Mc. - azdrama, this is a chat for candidates for National Board Certification.
js - You have to have a social skill, how you create a classroom community
Debbie Mc. - Think about why students need to learn how to build a community.
sinetag - on the one hand, if you are too "directive" in your video, that gives you something to talk about in terms of analysis; however, that does not take the place of student inquiry
sinetag - t doesn't have to be a perfect lesson, but the intent of inquiry is obviously the key
Debbie Mc. - have you read the social studies standards?
JanKWV - I had been using a foss kit, trees. The video showed kids with magnifying glasses and trays including objects such as leaves, bark, nuts, fruits... we talked about life cyles, and measured branches, and classified things
Teresa/2/OK - I got kicked off. It's not easy to get back on here
sinetag - what was the intended student learning?
sinetag - what grade?
Terri/K - We were doing sink and float (everyone must be sick of this particular lesson) and the kids were into what sank and what floated and trying out objects but didn't go past that.
JanKWV - The big idea was systems....
sinetag - FOSS lessons are designed to be open-ended and promote inquiry. Did you not find that to be the case?
Debbie Mc. - Those standards would be a wonderful place for you to see how cooperation and citizenship fit into bigger themes. And why children need to be taught how to build a community.
JanKWV - I thought I did.. but when I gave it to a reader, she said she thought it was more thematic than inquiry
Debbie Mc. - Think about why you chose cooperation/citizenship to teach to your particular students. Why do THEY need that skill?
Dondi - What about using physical fitness and letting the children estimating how many jumping jacks they can do in 1 minute for Entry 3?
sinetag - more thematic than inquiry?
sinetag - did she explain what she meant about that? The two are not mutually exclusive!
Debbie Mc. - That's more math than science, Dondi.
sinetag - In fact, this entry is intended to make you show how you connect student learning between disciplines.
Debbie Mc. - What science concepts are you teaching ?
sinetag - That is one of the aspects of the standards which is valued in the assessment process for this entry.
JanKWV - no, I've been kind of at a loss... so, I thought rather than trying to figure it out, I would start all over, and try to do something with balls and ramps.. Runing out of time, though
Dondi - So you must think the health aspect of the lesson would not be science related?
Debbie Mc. - Well, the entry is science/math right?
sinetag - well, i would not personally start over just for the sake of your portfolio. Teach whatever science you would normally be teaching. Connect to the other disciplines via some sort of theme - particularly to math. Focus your science learning via one of the big ideas. Design or choose learning activities that are inquiry-based.
Teresa/2/OK - sinetag, does that go for literacy too? I have a student that loves math and wanted to show her ability to discuss her understanding of problem solving as one of her artifacts. One person told me I shouldn't discuss math with literacy
sinetag - And don't take the word of mentors TOO seriously!
Debbie Mc. - Teresa, you can include pieces from other content areas in your literacy entry.
Debbie Mc. - Literacy is a cross curricular thing.
JanKWV - okay.. thanks sinetag... Are you the creator of the backwards planning idea?
Becca - Hi everyone!
sinetag - teresa: the most successful literacy entries i have seen have shown student growth in their ability to access and apply literacy skills. Literacy is not confined to language arts! Of course the use of literacy skills within a content area is fine.
sinetag - Jan: nonono
Debbie Mc. - Hi Becca
Dondi - I guess I'm at a loss for science/math lessons, I'm a retaker. Last time I did sink/float. Does anyone have any ideas?
Teresa/2/OK - Thank you, that was my understanding, but I started to doubt myself.
sinetag - I haven't created anything!
JanKWV - Hey Becca... we're running out of time!
JanKWV - ooppss sorry
Debbie Mc. - Relax, ladies. Stressing out will only make it worse.
Teresa/2/OK - Dondi,
sinetag - I did put together some info re: backwards planning on a web site that some people have used. It was based on my own experience as a candidate and was orignally put together for the 3rd NBCT Conference in DC in 1999.
Becca - I know Jan. I actually just got out and did my christmas returns. I should have stayed home and worked! AAHHHH
Debbie Mc. - Dondi, what concepts are in your curriculum?
sinetag - Dondi: what would you normally be teaching in science right now?
Debbie Mc. - But sinetag made it known to all of us.
sinetag - hardly ;(
Teresa/2/OK - Dondi, I'm doing bridge building. My students have a budget and (second gr.) of $900 and they have to design and build a bridge hopefully applying skills they have learned so far and meeting a specific criteria
Becca - I have a question about my science documentations. One is a powerpoint book that share photos and conclusions regarding the big idea. The second is photos of our charts through the durations of the unit.
Dondi - animal habitats
sinetag - So teach animal habitats!
Teresa/2/OK - sinetag, what is that web site address?
sinetag - http://home.earthlink.net/~sinetag/bp
Becca - he third is between two science logs. One backs up the video and one students misconceptions. or the other log shows photos of our motion commotion day
Dondi - Where does the math connection come in?
sinetag - what is you theme currently?
js - Dondi, I did the states of matter , specifically water in the water cycle. We were studying weather. We used math to measure temperature and the amount of evaoration which occurred in one day.
dania - hi all
dania - u?
Dondi - Hi, Dania
Becca - I think the motion day is stronger but I like how the other log backs the video. Any opinions?
Teresa/2/OK - for animal habitats? the math connection could be graphing changes, comparing habitats,
sinetag - There are 2 ways to connect math to a science unit: one is as a tool (e.g. measuring, graphing, etc.) - the other is use the math and the science to illustrate aspects of the theme you are pursuing.
JanKWV - Yes, sinetag.. that was the backwards planning I was referring to. Very helpful.. thanks!
Teresa/2/OK - Thanks for the address, sinetag
sinetag - you're welcome
Debbie Mc. - I've gotta run but will be glad to answer questions if you email...crow@muhlon.com
Teresa/2/OK - dania, what are you working on? Anyone else working on literacy?
js - Sinetag, any suggestions on how to prepare for the assessment aspect of this process.
JanKWV - Read everything!
sinetag - the AC is largely a test of your content knowledge
JanKWV - All the professional books found in the EC Gen files were right on the money..
sinetag - Each teacher knows best where s/he is weakest in terms of content
sinetag - the links on this list are good
Becca - Jan what do you have "left?"
sinetag - i don't know if they include links to the old california challenge standards but they are very good too
JanKWV - Go to the NBPTS.Org site, click on the assessment center, look at the sample questions.. just practice typing your thoughts
JanKWV - Left.... Well, I'm in the process of rewriting everything.. but.. I am thinking up chucking my science, and starting over again...and LIteracy is not complete
js - thanks
JanKWV - How about you Becca?
Becca - lit is not complete....reworking the science this weekedn and still have edits on the SS. I'm looking at the cover sheets for the instructional materials. We get a WHOLE page to write about how they connect. I'm impressed. I've gotten used to saying so little about each thing that I'm not sure what to do with a whole page!
sinetag - well i am off to lunch - keep working hard!
JanKWV - thanks sinetag! You're great
JanKWV - I know Becca, I felt the same way about IM response
Becca - Have you done yours?
JanKWV - yes, but of course, nothing is ever really done, is it? In fact, I was going to take another look at #2 im. After I go back and look, I always have changes.
JanKWV - I was thinking.. in another month.. my box will be in the mail.. what will I do?
JanKWV - till November?
Becca - I though I had chosen my two but now I can't decide...show the parent connection or the connect to the video...AHAHH
Becca - Wel...lets see clean house? sleep? cook? I have REALLY slacked around the house. It has NEVER looked bad and it looks HORRIBLE
JanKWV - I had a powerpoint I had presented to parents at open house that showed our breadmake. Now I think i will show pictures the kids drew of how they work hard at home and school
JanKWV - I know.. my family has been so understanding..
JanKWV - Well.. we better get back to work.. good luck1
Becca - you can still turn those picture into a powerppoint. Just share them with the kids and then you can get 6 pictures per page!
JanKWV - okay, cool
Becca - you too!
Becca - bye
JanKWV - bye
