MJ - I'm busy working on entry 1. Anyone else working on that one?
Allison - no, but I need to start!!
Allison - I lost my focus & haven't touched writing in 2 weeks...YIKES
MJ - I'm having trouble keeping it within the page limits!
Allison - what grade are you mj?
mdollar - yes i am typing entry 1 im having some problems
Allison - have you "finished" 2 & 3?
MJ - What are you working on, Allison?
Allison - I have put 4 to rest & am working on 2 & 3.....taping next week
MJ - No, I have only finished entry 4. Will video ss lesson next week.
mdollar - i have started 2 and 3 and done the videos
Donna - me too Allison. I have worked 1 and 4 to death.
Allison - my husband & son were in a wreck 2 weeks ago so I haven't paid attn to anything but them
MJ - sounds good,mdollar
Donna - sorry Allison everyone OK?
MJ - Your priorities are where they should be,Allison
Allison - well, they're ok now...but we're dealing with loss of car, insurance companies, etc...he's just 2 =(
Donna - anyone had a good K video-mine are terrible!
Susan (NC) - Hi everybody- I'm just taking a break from my writing.......Allison, how awful - I hope they will soon be ok!
Allison - yah, but now I am getting stressed once again
Allison - thanks...it was pretty traumatic but we're tough
mdollar - does anyone know how we can get the names of mentors to read our work
Kelly M - Hi everybody! How's the writing going?
Allison - md - I would post a request at the Yahoo boards
Donna - hard to put it all in the page limits kelly
MJ - It's going slowly!!!
Susan (NC) - Kelly, did you just get some snow?
Donna - I am ready,I think. to have 1 and 4 read
mdollar - i did but there was no response
MJ - Susan, where do you live in NC? I'm from NC too and we're expecting sleet and freezing rain.
Susan (NC) - Donna, my video's are with 1st - had a lot to choose from LOL.........
Kelly M - Allison - I hope things are okay! mdollar - you can post a message on the ring and ask if anyone is interested in reading yours.....if anyone is (and there's always somebody willing to read!) they'll respond to you.
Donna - my kids are not bing very cooperative-makes me feel like a crummy teacher after all these years
Allison - NC here too mj
Susan (NC) - MJ, I'm in western NC (Swain County) our kids got early release Fri. because of the snow - then it turned to rain! Where are you from?
Allison - I think it is the time of the year or something...they kind of fall apart socailly
Donna - gee, sunny and 80 in Florida!
Kelly M - mdollar - I'm sorry...I'm at school and some other teachers keep popping in....did you say you tried for a reader and got no response?
Donna - yes Allsion, mine are arguing with each other on the videos
MJ - I'm from Rockingham County, near the Virginia border.
Donna - we hane gone back and tried to rebiuld some community feelings
mdollar - donna have you tried showing them the videos after they have misbehaved my kids realized how bad they were once they saw the video and much better on the second one
tmw1 - I have a quick question. In my science entry, can I say that a balance scale is my technology or am I way off?
MJ - yes,tmwl
Donna - mdollar, that is my next step. we did talk about it some, but maybe it will help if they see themselves in action
mdollar - yes kelly that's right no one answered
Susan (NC) - I tried to do a role play.........but the kids were laughing so much; can I still use this (Community entry) with saying in my reflection about what they are saying is about our rules & routines? Talk about concise? NOT
Allison - that's one of the reasons my SS theme is friendship & cooperation, re-visiting
Donna - I guess I am looking for perfection and will never get it with 21 5 yr olds-will just have to reflect A LOT I guess
Kelly M - mdollar - we used to maintain a 'reader list' but no longer do so. If I were you I would post my request again.
diane - can someone explain how you relate magnets for entry 3 to a SYSTEM?
Donna - I am going to try the same Allison-back up some and regroup
Kelly M - Hi Diane, Terri, and bruppert!....good to 'see' you!
Kelly M - and Amy...you, too!
bruppert - Hey KellyM!! How are you?
Kelly M - Donna - the assessors aren't looking for perfection! They know it doesn't exist!
diane - heybruppert...we are still hanging in there...we will get it this time round
diane - hi kelly...glad you are around too
Terri/K/SC - diane..........magnets interact with objects as parts of a system...........maybe, remember I rarely know what I am doing with this process
bruppert - WE are in for a big snow and so I will have to work on my entries !!
Donna - Kelly, what about off task behavior-if I handle it appropriatelty will I be OK?
mdollar - diane i did magnets but what do you mean about a system
Susan (NC) - diane, that's the spirit! Us bankers have to hang together!
Allison - for the SS video, do I need to show explicit instruction (like a lesson, activity) or can it be me facilitating the art project? Would it be best to do group activity then into art?
diane - yep...i can see it now nbpt2003...can you all see it too???
bruppert - yeah diane, I don't know about you but I am finding it hard to work on this and keep the momentum!
tmw1 - I am having trouble picking a big idea for sink and float. Can anyone help?
Kelly M - Donna - of course! That's what 'accomplished teachers' do! Because you know that behavior happens everywhere....it's how you handle it that matters!
MJ - I hope so, Diane!!!
diane - magnets big idea is supposed to be systems and interactions and i am confused about htow there are actually a system
bruppert - my videos were not exactly pretty this week and so if we ever get back to school I have more to do for those.
Donna - thanks Kelly-deep breath and look at my videos again
Allison - donna - I think that gives more to reflect about as well
MJ - Where are you.bruppert?
Amy(NC) - I too was going to do a friendship theme for SS -liked the wrinkled heart idea and since only 6 of my 25 brought valentines to pass out, I was thinking we could do a "friendship" exchange like in the Franklin's Valentine's book we read yesterday. kids thought that was a good idea since some felt sad they didn't have valentines to exchange - any suggestions?
Kelly M - Allison - be careful about the directions. I think it says a 'discussion'....I'm not sure them working on the art project will work....but I don't have the directions right here with me.
Donna - true Allison, I reflected on ways to improve on task behavior
Susan (NC) - bruppert, where are you again, I forgot? We now have 5 days to make up!!
mdollar - diane i seem to remember force and energy as a category does that help
bruppert - I live in Va south of DC about an hour and people areound here are buying plastic and duct tape out the whazooo.
Allison - thanks, I will check!! So the video does NOT need to show any of the arts components? anyone?
Terri/K/SC - I did sink and float also, as part of GEM S Sifting Through Science
Susan (NC) - Amy, the wrinkled heart idea is great- have you tried the toothpaste activity too?
Kelly M - Donna - it really helped me to actually write out a transcript of each video. It DOES take forever....but I really noticed things that I hadn't noticed just 'watching' it. Also....listen to it with the picture turned off...just LISTEN. Then turn that around.....WATCH it with the sound off. You really get better perspectives of just what was happening in your lesson!
diane - mdollar...i have read and been advised to use systems be people who have assessed science in the past so i feel that is where it needs to be...just don't grasp it yet
bruppert - diane, do you have the book Building The Primary Classroom they explain systems really well and this could apply to magnets.
Donna - Thanks for the advice Kelly I'll try that
Allison - with our friendship theme, we made valentines & took them to the retirement community in our neighborhood & made new "friends"...maybe a trip?
Donna - what SS standard will go with a visit to the senior citizens?
Susan (NC) - Kelly, when you transcribed your video - did you use the actual "kid quotes" in your commentary? I did sort of, but maybe I didn't use enough and that's where I missed the boat?
diane - thanks bruppert...i have 2 copies...never thought to look there
Kelly M - Diane - but the "Big Idea" depends on how you addressed the science concept. Amy - is 'friendship' a Social Studies concept? Check your local/state/or National standards.
Allison - donna - are you asking me that??
bruppert - Hey KElly, I have no sound on two of my videos I guess I can get a good perspective of my class LOL I was so mad the boundary mike didn't work and the battery ran out. LOVE IT!!
Donna - yes Allison-sorry
bruppert - diane it is on page 382 I just looked it up for you
Allison - oh...well, I have no idea LOL
Kelly M - Hi elanarae - welcome. Susan - I used the quotes some. But it helped ME see the whole picture better!
diane - kelly...did what they will repel and attreact...poles...strentghs...did the reg. stuff with kinder
diane - kelly...did what they will repel and attreact...poles...strentghs...did the reg. stuff with kinder
Donna - last week I accidentally pulled my camera loose from the plug-started again and pulled my microphone loose! Oh well
tmw1 - Is there a site or somewhere I can go to understand the big ideas more?
mdollar - wow i better double check mine then
diane - thanks bruppert...i was going to post them for sale...guess i had better wait another week
tmw1 - Hello ginger
Donna - well Allison, you and I are in the same boat-I am going to the senior center soon and thought I might video our preparations
Kelly M - tmw1 - have you read the science files on the yahoogroup site?
bruppert - tmwl-- have you read all there is on the EC_ GEn files?
Kelly M - diane - but it still depends on how you were looking at those things.... Hi Ginger!
Amy(NC) - I was told the SS video should show the kids "doing" the arts part along with a discussion, am I correct?
ginger - hi, mom! How ya doing?
diane - hi ginger ole gal...it is warm here in sunny central fl...cold in nyc???
tmw1 - For the literacy entry, I have chosen option b for both students. Am I supposed to do a transcript of each writing, and if so, where at?
bruppert - Kelly what is the name of the girl who wrote the big idea -- Brown?
Allison - ah, cool....we learned "make new friends" song & a few others...they LOVED them!
ginger - yeah, diane, we have a high temp of 15 today....'bout to freeze to death!
tmw1 - I have printed them out, and have read through some of it. Haven't got through all of it yet
Kelly M - Amy - I do not think they have to be DOING the art. I think it needs to be apparent....could be that they are planning it.. (like a play) or talking about it.....or showing it (like showing their artwork if there is a tangible product, etc.
diane - kelly..i am now so confused...how??
diane - yes brown (sinetag) read that all too!!
Allison - our culminating project is my assessment and teaching as well, soit might work, I'll re-read
Donna - we are doing illustrations for Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World
Allison - we're doing that next week too.....do you have the book?
Kelly M - Well, Nancy Brown (aka "Sinetag") didn't actually WRITE the big ideas.....but she certainly is our resident expert. She may be here later. Some of her explanations of the big ideas can be found in the science files on the EC_GEN site.
bruppert - diane-- think of the big idea as the big tree of concepts and everything else fall underneath it
diane - how are you coming along ginger...everything settled with your superintendent now
Donna - didn't know there was a book!! I only have the song!!
ginger - donna, a discussion could take place after you make the illustrations...could be about what it was like to share it with another class, or how it tells what you wanted it to
Terri/K/SC - Am working on analysis of science tape...anyone have an example of "intellectual engagement" >
Allison - yah Donna!!! We have he big book & little ones... illustrations to the lyrics
Susan (NC) - I'd better get back to writing, thanks for the advice; see ya!
Kelly M - Hi Kirsti and Liz - welcome!
ginger - diane, we are still in limbo. he's in jail, and it's a mess. some parents are calling for the board to resign
Kelly M - Bye Susan!
Donna - ginger, we will be presenting it at the senior center along with some other songs and poetry. Should O video discussion while we are planning, rather tan the program itself?
bruppert - oh yeah ginger I have been wondering what is going on for you guys too. I am so sorry !! It is a heartache.
Donna - Allison, where did you get them?
Allison - yah...and all these teachers at a local HS in my area were forced to resign..."cheated" for kids on EOG's!!!
Kelly M - Donna - they don't want to see the performance....
ginger - yes, i would video the planning And the meeting you have when you come back and reflect on how it went
mdollar - i ve gotta go to write too bye
ginger - thanks....all we can do is be the best teachers we can be
tmw1 - Bye mdollar. Have a great week.
Allison - I ordered the little one & the big one is in our Media Center. The illustrations are nice & a great read-along
diane - i am using a short discussion among 2 students where one is trying to explain why he pick a plastic magnet in the middle of the Venn as intell. engag....sounds good??
MJ - allison, are you from Guilford County?
tmw1 - Hello Nita.
Allison - MJ - yep
kristi - Hi guys. I just got on and saw that Donna is illustrating a book, too. My children illustrated a book they created as part of our SS unit. However, my videotape segment doesn't show them illustrating. However, at the end of the segment, my students ask if they are going to get to illustrate it. I said yes once we are finished writing the book. Okay or not?
mdollar - thanks kelly m
Nita - Hi everyone! Can anyone give a little guidance on SS entry? I'm stuck on what exactly they want.
Donna - would my book be an instructional material?
diane - bye mdollar
diane - yes...books are IM
Kelly M - Hi Nita - welcome! Diane - check the directions.....especially about whether only having two kids discussing something is okay. I don't have directions right here....but two is a pretty small 'small' group!
MJ - I read about the EOG problem in the Greensboro News. I'm originally from G'boro.
mdollar - bye dian i might be back later
Allison - huge scandal...where are you now?
MJ - Eden
diane - my video is whole group but there was intell engagement throughout...that is just one specific
tmw1 - Better get back to work. Have a great week everyone. Thanks for the help.
kristi - Diane-are you the Diane I've been talking to about magnets?
diane - yes i am...wrote you twice today
diane - curious...how many of us are bankers??
Kelly M - diane - oh...yes! I think that is an example! Sorry! ...I didn't understand!
Donna - not yet diane
kristi - I wrote back so check when you have time. I am glad we are able to talk through this stuff!
Allison - I'm a future banker if that counts! LOL
ginger - i am, diane, but i have decided to only take the AC
Nita - I am a banker because I piloted the literacy entry last spring and banked that score.
ginger - allison, that is so funny!
Kelly M - Diane - not any more!
diane - allison...you are a future nb2003 and not a future banker...reach for the STAR
Kelly M - Nita - but NBPTS classifies you as a first year candidate, correct?
Allison - ginger - but sooo true! Thisis like pre-game warm up for me
MJ - I'm a newbie, but may well be a banker next year.
Amy(NC) - I am a banker
Nita - Yes
bruppert - I am a banker and I worked to be here too.
Donna - I feel I ramble in my entry 1,will the assesors pick out the info? or any ideas on how to better organize?
Allison - thanks diane - but my goal right now is to just DO IT
bruppert - ginger which AC are you taking?
Kelly M - Being a banker can be a really great experience! You really DO have to dig a lot deeper....I think you learn a LOT more after that first year.
diane - just think how much we have learned and how happy we gals will be come this xmas...i know some of you and we have worked SO hard
Allison - we have soo many things going on right now I am not able to give it the attention I should
ginger - just the science
bruppert - diane, are you just doing the science/math?
Kelly M - Hi Shirley - welcome!
ginger - i scored really low on it and i knew i did just after i left the ac. i didn't even start by doing a kwl or anything!!!!
diane - donna...make sure you find people to read your entries...it can make a world of difference have other eyes read for you
Kelly M - Donna - yes...the assessors are trained to pick out the evidence wherever they find it. But try to keep going through it and paring it down. You shouldn't have room to ramble!
MJ - I'm worried about tha AC. Any advice anyone?
bruppert - I did well on the AC science, but not the portfolio so I am redoing it.
Allison - the contextual info is NOT scroed, right? It's just facts??
Donna - maybe not ramble-but I feel I jump around too much. will send it off tomorrow to 2 readers
JTL - any SPED teachers in here?
shirley - HI-I'm doing sink/float. Does anybody have any ideas on the technology?
diane - talking about so many things to do and on your mind...i am going to court mon on felony charges against my 16 son...talk about things on your mind
Kelly M - Hi JTL - welcome! donna - diane's right! get others to read it. You don't really need NBCTs to read it, either! Have somebody NOT connected to educ read it! Give them the directions (prompts) and ask them if they think you answered them...and if what you said is clear. That can really help!
Allison - mj - have you done the practice ones on the nbpts site? ( I haven't yet)
diane - cont is not scored
ginger - MJ, i wrote a last minute sheet of things to remember. Like, being sure to include technology, family, etc.sort of what you probabaly did when studying for finals
Allison - yikes Diane - hope everything goes alright
Kelly M - Shirley - do the kids use any sort of scales to measure things that they are testing?
ginger - shirley, toilets use sink and float, and that is tech
bruppert - diane, you should email me, I could be a good listener as my two sons have not been exactly perfect sort of clever they are. you will live through this too.
diane - guys pray for me..thats something ihave never asked before...he is a great kid
Kelly M - Diane - good luck! That's a difficult situation....that I'm sure is more on your mind that this!
JTL - I need to teach a lesson to SPED kids on bringing materials to class, any ideas?
Donna - Shirley, we weighed objects to see of heavy or light made a difference in float/sink
shirley - Kelly..Yes-good idea!
diane - i'm living by what doesn't kill you makes you stronger
kristi - diane-you will be in my prayers.
shirley - Diane,,,I'll be praying for you!
diane - thanks guys....
Kelly M - welcome 45453....
MJ - That's agood idea,Ginger! I'm worried because I don't type very fast but am afraid to write it because I was told assessors might have some bias against having to type it in for me.
Allison - ok, heading out ... you all are reminding me of all I have to work on!! *LOL
Kelly M - MJ - are you still allowed to handwrite? I thought that was no longer available....but definitely could be wrong!
MJ - Take care Allison! This too shall pass!
shirley - Donna/Kelly....That would have looked good in the video, wouldn't it!
elanarae - Hi-If you type the contextual sheet, can it be single spaced?
ginger - mj, be sure to go online and do this chat every saturday. it makes you a much faster typist!!
ginger - and if you have instant messaging, use that every day. i was a lousy typist til i did national boards!
Kelly M - elanarae - check the directions. I think not....but I'm not positive. I thought EVERYTHING had to be double spaced and 12 font....
bruppert - Kelly I had heard that this past year was the last time they would let you handwrite at the AC test.
MJ - Our support person told us that after some preliminary comouter stuff, we could opt to write it longhand.
Kelly M - bruppert - I know that if that hasn't gone into effect it will soon!
MJ - Wow, look at my great typing skills!!!
bruppert - MJ keep it up!
ginger - even if you aren't a very fast typist it is still probably faster than you can write
Kelly M - MJ - make certain that's a current ruling. That WAS true in the past....but soon will not be...and it may already be out as an option.
bruppert - Kelly can't she ask the NBPTS?
Donna - I asume some "typos" are OK at the ac?
diane - i am pretty sure you cannot write anymore either
MJ - Well, I'm going to type it and have our school technology teacher give me a crash course in key-boarding!
ginger - oh, yes, and they only grade the spelling a tiny bit
Kelly M - Yes....you can always call or write to NBPTS. I personally would write to them from the candidate inquiry page. Also...it might be one of the FAQs on that page. Get your response in writing, though!
Kelly M - Donna - typos are okay anywhere!...but ESPECIALLY at the AC!
bruppert - diane, that is what we were told last year and I just assumed this year you had to use the computer. But ask some one who would know like the NBPTS???
Kelly M - ginger - I think that spelling has no effect on your score....
ginger - MJ, bring a sweater that you can take on and off
shirley - Wow! You learn something new everyday!
Donna - I guess if your spelling was horrible they would question YOUR literacy!
shirley - Donna...LOL!
diane - has anyone ever looked at the way we spell on this chat as we are typing so fast
bruppert - no they know we are all a nervous wreck it has nothing to do with literacy...
ginger - kelly, you are probably right, but i seem to remember that there was a small focus on it
Kelly M - Donna - at the AC you want to concentrate on the content of what you are saying....don't worry about anything else!
ginger - ok, bruppert! i am pleased to know that
MJ - I did hear it got cold at the AC. I'll be so nervous, I thought I'd be sweating
Donna - past nervous wreck by then I'm sure!
bruppert - yeah my experience at the AC was good, I felt good during my stay . I liked it better than the portfolio
shirley - Thanks, guys! I getter bet back to work!
Kelly M - ginger - that's why they don't bother with having spell check or anything on the program. They know you are typing against the clock...trying to get down everything you can. You don't have to make paragraphs or anything!
ginger - well, you may be hot or cold. Also, bring a bottle of water so you can have a relaxing drink on the short break
bruppert - yeah I did that and was glad I had the water.
ginger - great to know, kelly!
MJ - How much did you study for it,bruppert?
diane - you can just type thought with dashed instead of worrying so much about conventions
bruppert - I studied ALOT!!
Donna - and WHAT did you study bruppert?
bruppert - I am one of those people that has to study to pass anything and I had studied hard, I took it in June and was out of school for two weeks and spent every day working on some aspect of the AC
Donna - I was going to get teacher's guides from 1-3 grade to look through.will that help?
bruppert - good idea, Donna, I did that for science and SS
ginger - donna, that's a good idea
diane - i studied building classroom curr. and books on play....read thru teachers manual on ss/science of approp grade level...didn't know how to study for pe...just read their standards
Donna - what else do you suggest we study bruppert?
bruppert - I also compared different series to see where the emphasis was
Kelly M - Donna - yes...I think that will help you! A lot of folks talk about how it helped them to do some specific reading about play...especially if you don't teach pre-k. Also....study the grade levels that you don't teach........and subj areas you don't teach (like perhaps health)
bruppert - I got the head of our PE For our county to talk to me for 2hours about the national standards for PE and I was glad I passed that
Donna - I keep reading about Building the Primary Classroom, but do not have it would that book help?
diane - i also looked over several teachers manual from diff. companies...that helped because they each cover diff.t hings
ginger - donna, if you don't teach k, study play. That's what i learned the most about
Donna - I teach k-live play
Kelly M - Donna - I think that's a great book.....I STILL re-read it!
ginger - great, then you will probably have to learn the most about 3rd grade!
bruppert - I read the book Pathways to Play and that was a good book. I would love to see videos of children's play too. ARe there any of those.? Ia m redoing play
diane - know play inside and out...i taught K for 6 years and learned alot by reading a couple of good books
Donna - what books diane? I have taught K for 30 years, but always trying to learn more
Kelly M - People really rave about the book "Pathways to Play"....I think there are two people's notes from that book in our files.
ginger - gotta go. thanks for letting me be a part of this great group!
Donna - will look for that Kelly
bruppert - I think the book Building the Primary Classroom looks as if the NPBTS is based on it. it has it all. Get it, I recommend it highly,
MJ - Thanks for your input Ginger!
Donna - will do bruppert
diane - can't remeber...i read pathways to play and another one...do you remember it ginger...know the stages and what they do in all stages
bruppert - oh yeah you are right miss kelly! I forgot that
Kelly M - I bstew - welcome!
bruppert - diane did you read the one by the NAEYC< can't remember the title?
diane - i have pathways to play for sale along with building ...email me at mscrazylady01@cs.com if you want to buy them
bruppert - Donna the book Constructing Curriculum is the same as B uilding a Primary Classroom. So do not get both like I did.
Kelly M - Hi Debra - welcome!
diane - yes...did read thru that also...go online and you can find some infor
bruppert - donna get them from diane. !!
bruppert -
Debra - Hello, first time here believe it or not!
diane - i got both which we now know was a mistake so i have 2 also
Donna - yes diane I want them! will email you I am kgnteachmb@hotmail.com
Donna - don't sell them to anyone else diane!!!
diane - ok...donna...will wait to see your email later
bruppert - hey I need a commission diane!! LOL
diane - whatever you want bruppert it is yours!!!
Debra - Oh, trying to see what we are doing - Primay Curriculum is absolutely wonderful. I wouldn't part with my copy
Kelly M - LOL I WISH I could sell all of mine! Unfortunately I have this incurable disease - I don't want to borrow anyone's books....or buy them used....I want to OWN them ALL! I need a second job to support my teaching habit! I'm the same way with children's books!
Debra - I have a question, is this a good place to ask a Social Studies video question?
Kelly M - Hi Allison! you're back!
Donna - me tookelly-the other day my husband bet I had 11 kid books -more like 1000 but I just SMILED
Allison - ok, I didn't get very far *LOL* With the Planning & Instruction (SS) are you expected to focus on the video part of on the unit as a whole? I am JUST starting to write & I need to establish some "boundaries"
Debra - Me too Kelly, by the way Book Closeouts is having another sale, of course that was my plan his morning since I was snowed in!
Donna - 100 books-not 11
diane - when you get as old and as blind as me...you don't need them so much...also i am the math teacher in our CHILD school so i concentrate on math
bruppert - thanks diane!! I request you come to the convention and I will just get to meet you. that is payment enough
Donna - also have taken to hiding my Amazon boxes
Kelly M - Donna - me, too! I just filled a cart on wheels with about 200 of my books to share with the rest of the first grade because they don't have many books in their rooms!
Debra - Ok, so we can ask video questions here? Mine is on Social Studies
bruppert - Kelly I have the same problem as you and I don't want to get rid of them either.
diane - debra...go ahead and ask away
Donna - Ask Debra so I can learn more
Debra - Oh, Donna, here is a good one, have them shipped to your school, then it isn't so obvious that the UPS man and you are on a first name basis!
Donna - good idea Debra. I like how you think!!
Allison - but that would defeat the purpose of UPS! Especially in the summer when they wear shorts...LOL
Kelly M - This could quickly turn in to a 12-step meeting for early childhood teachers who suffer from this book fetish!
Nita - Allison, I wonder the same thing. Anyone know?
Debra - OK, here is my question. I have been doing this unit on Red Hen/citizenship and lots and lots of activities. Then yesterday they used their puppets in the puppet theater (really cool) and role played alternative senarios for ways to respond prosocially.
Allison - what's that Nita?
Donna - well in the summer I am home to accept before my husband gets home-summer deliveries are at home!
Nita - Whether the Planning and Instruction should only focus on the video lesson or if it is more.
diane - sounds fine so far,...what is the ???
bruppert - donna, and debra, you guys are too funny !! I like it
Debra - My question is this; the arts has been done, so I was going to have them do 2 things in the video on Wed: (1) discuss what has already been happened and make inquiries with one another, and (2) role play some new situations. DOES that sound like a winner for the video?
Donna - too many years with 5 year olds-30 years can get to you!
bruppert - it does for me, good lesson.. debra!
Kelly M - Allison - this was just on the ring last week....but I have trouble remembering. I think 'featured' period is the video. I think the planning and instruction has to describe the whole unit, though. Anybody have some help with this? You guys are a lot more familiar with the currently directions that I am!
bstew - Does anybody have any ideas of art to go with carousels?
Debra - The planning and instruction is the whole thing NITA.
bruppert - I believe you are right Kelly, I don't have the directions in front of me either.
Kelly M - Debra - sounds good to me!
Debra - How about a 3-D diarama for the carousel
Allison - Anyone??...with Planning & Instruction, are you expected to focus on the video lesson or the unit as a whole? I am just strting to write & need some boundaries. How did others approach
diane - debra...sounds fine...similiar to what i did and i scored well...we roleplayed and discussed it onthe video but didn't actually show it happening on the video
Debra - Kelly, so you think what I have planned in the video for Wed is good?
Allison - bs - a parachute would be a good like
Donna - I think planning and instruction goes with the overall unit-how it flows from 1 lesson to another
Allison - oops. a good link...how the top would look like the parachute going round
Debra - Well, the puppet theater part was really cool on Friday, but I didn't have my video for that one - I think that their discussion and the way they will interact with each other will be appropriate.
Kelly M - bstew - I'm trying to envision what you're doing with a carousel...?
diane - a used plan/instr as whole unit and featured as the video lesson
bstew - the unit is Where We Live (pre-k)
Kelly M - Debra - I think they want to see the discussion....not the puppet show...although it would be fun to see!
diane - debra..i think you have it covered as long as their discussion is good
Debra - I have some history for the carousel - the famous maker of the horses was from Leavenworth KS and they are trying to get a museum, it may be up by now.
Allison - I am SOOooo excited, my entire class is going to see the broadway series "BLAST" this week, I can't wait. We have been working on drumming, rhythms, beats, etc & they will LOVE it!!
Kelly M - bstew - I'm still having trouble connecting a carousel with Where We Live...?
Donna - sounds fun allison. we are discouraged from field trips in K!
Kelly M - Allison - how neat! How did you get tickets for them?
diane - when we discussed we sat on the floor in a circle and used a small ball...personspoke and rolled ball to the person he chose to speak next...worked really well...helped me sit back more and it gave them a chance to interact w/o me so much
Debra - The way they discuss is in a circle on the carpet; the leader of the day pulls sticks and a question is asked by me or a member of the class, the child may answer, create a question, and call upon others if they have questions. The flow is nice. They come up with their own role plays and select the kids they want to do it with them. I really like the way they have taken charge of their community circle.
bstew - I am using landmarks for them to find addresses--we have a denzel carousel within walking distance from my school so that's why I want to use an art project with carousels
Nita - So, if I am doing a unit on prejudice and discrimination, tolerance towards differences, I write the plan/instr for the whole unit. Then I video one lesson with thst teme and analyze it. Do I bring in classroom management, student jobs, conflict resolution, etc. in the plan/inst. part?
Allison - are you serious Donna?? Wow, we have 6 scheduled this montth,,,they are SO exhausting!!
Donna - we are allowed only 2 for the year!!
Allison - The tickets were donated by a Pepsi distributor! They range $35 up to $65, we just lucked out!
bruppert - diane and debra, I like the way you do your circle time, cute ideas
Debra - Nita, it depends if all of the mgt stuff is part of your lesson/unit. As for the video, it is mostly about the student discussion integrating the arts and community
Allison - that's crazy Donna - you would think it would be the opposite...why is that? Less "instructional" time?
Kelly M - Nita - the discussion has to integrate the Arts and SS concept....and demonstrate the community you have built...
Donna - yes, we are not allowed to miss "that much" instructional time in the classroom-soo boring for 5 yr olds
Allison - I teach at an arts school so if I don't do well on that I will cry LOL
MJ - Oops had to go answer the phone, and now I've got to go type! Hope the week is productive for everyone!
Allison - but trips ARE instructional time...to us anyway...guess it isn't seen that way to everyone
Donna - so our discussion in the video must include talking about our art connection?
Kelly M - Bye MJ - good luck typing!
MJ - Thanks!!!
Donna - I agree Allison-have evn talked to our superintandent about it
Kelly M - Donna - I think your discussion needs to at least elude to the art! Anybody else able to be more specific about that?
Allison - you mean on the video kelly?
diane - i did mine on MLK tied in discrimination/art posters of their version of i have a dream and more import. tied into the discussion how we are treating and judging people inthe world today that dreaa and look like they might be terrorists...approp. last year after 911 but not so sure about the world we live in today
Donna - yes allison
Debra - Diane, I use a talking ball that is actually a koosh ball, not all the time, but sometimes it helps to keep the eyes on the speaker who has the ball when they are all excited and want to talk out at the same time.
bruppert - I was told that the art had to be so integrated that the ss could not exist with out it and you had to talk about having them be such a part of each other
Debra - Yes the video questions have an art question, let me see if I can find it
Allison - it says "videotape that shows...you in the classroom activity that addresses a SS topic, concept, or theme, the integration of the arts, and the goal of building a classroom community"
diane - my arts were the i have a dream posters but more import. theskits we did showing how people were treated before desegregation
Debra - Give an example from the video tap of how the instructional materials from both the arts and social studies supported student learning is one question we must ans
Kelly M - Yes, Allison...
bruppert - diane I did mine on MLK too, it was a great unit and the kids were so nice and respectful to each other
Debra - The other one is; How do the interactions see in the video illustrate efforts towards the stated social goals
diane - i assumed we both passed that entry with flying colors??
Donna - thanks debra=I will read all directions AGAIN to make sure I am clear
Allison - sorry to type all that but I didn't want to misguide
Kelly M - Thanks Allison!
diane - one is the way they respect the person who is speaking waiting their turns
Debra - Oh, and it says Give an example from the tape of how the integration of SS and the arts has furthered student understanding of the lesson.
Allison - we needed to re-visit our sicial curriculum & expectations so the timing was perfect for our theme
diane - another is the discussion showing what they learned about how people should be treated as in my case MLK exemplifies community on a larger scale
Debra - what do you mean timing was perfect for your theme?
bruppert - diane --did you do that this year or last year?
Allison - can pictures be included in the SS unit? I want to show a picture of the art project
diane - last year
diane - yes...i included pictures of the posters
Allison - Debra - we're doing a theme on relationships, friendships, etc.... and I am using it for the portfolio.
Kelly M - Allison - I think people have used pictures. ...but again, check those directions! They do change some from year to year....which is why some of us are hesitant to give a definitive answer! It SHOULD say specifically about pictures is they are, in fact, allowed!
Debra - you are talking of one of the instructional materials of the 4, 2 must be arts, 2 must be about the nature and involvement of the students learning
Donna - the IM's are anything from the series of lessons, right?
diane - allison...have you read the wrinkled heart postings...them seem excellent
Debra - Not anything, the IMS are very specific
Debra - I did the wrinkled heart, it was awesome
Nita - what's the wrinkled heart?
Donna - but they can come from any lesson in the series-not just the video lesson-right?
Debra - Kelly has it posted on teachers net
Allison - would art tools be IM?
diane - i think art tools are IM
Debra - Donna, absolutely, 3 are about the nature and involvement of the students learning to support your discussion of what came before, during or after the video
Debra - I don't think the tools are what you would use, what do you mean specifically?
Debra - I don't think the tools are what you would use, what do you mean specifically?
diane - nita...check the ring tonight and ask for the site to be posted or check the files....lkelly has it i believe
Kelly M - Nita - I resposted the link to the Wrinkled Heart lesson on the ring last week. I don't have the link right here. But you can go over to the lesson plan archives here on teachers.net and type in "Wrinkled Heart"...and it will come up.
Debra - Whops, that is two are about nature and flow, the orther two are arts related, that was a typo
Allison - art tools we'll use to create the mural
Nita - Thanks, I'll look for it tonight.
Kelly M - Nita - if you have trouble, email me for it. (lkelly46@cs.com)
Donna - well,my brain is mush now-think I will go write some more!. Thanks to all for your help. This group is the BEST!
