Dana in MS - You girls inspire me to wwrite and stop putting it off
Dana in MS - I got my entry 3 done and now i can't seem to get myself into it
Kinderjane - Dana- What are you doing next? Or are you done?
Lana - Hi, Dana, Jane, Kiela, etc! I feel like I'm meeting old friends!!
Dana in MS - Done???? lol I have my science video, i have taught my ss/arts, collected my literacy, just can't get to the one the paper nitty-gritty!
Dana in MS - What have you done Jane?
Lana - Howdy! I'm taking a break from rewriting my literacy entry for the millionth time to join the chat!
Kinderjane - I tried to do my science video this week. The ones I did won't do. I so wanted to get that done, but............
Dana in MS - know Lana is well on her way to getting finished! Self-disciplined! HI PILOT KELLY!
Kelly M - Hi kids! Glad to see you all are here!
Kiela - Dana- I am envious. I cannot get a decent community video
Lana - Hi Kelly!
Kelly M - Hey Kathy! I see you there! How's it going? What are you working on? I saw Mary, but WE NEED TO MEET!
Kinderjane - I have something written for all except science. I am working on the others while I keep taping.
Kinderjane - Keila- I got a great community. I am very pleased with that one.
Dana in MS - Oh jane, I need to get busy!
Kiela - Kinderjane-excellent-How?
Kelly M - Hey Dana - did that work with Mary Lou's fax?
Kiela - HI JoyH- Are you going on Tuesday?
Dana in MS - Why do you guys think I am avoiding the writing? It is so dumb of me!
Kelly M - Kathy, I'm not letting you off the hook! I NEED you and Pat to spur me on!
Kinderjane - Dana- I read on the NB site of one teacher who did all her writing in one week. I am like the turtle in the Turtle and the Hare- Slow and steady!
JoyH - Kiela, Is it in PS?
Kelly M - Dana - you're a procrastinator like me! Hey there Mary Lou - you're not snowed in too much to come to the chat, huh?
Mary Lou - Hi guys! Dana I just got your email! Thanks!
Dana in MS - I wrote (emailed) her and I havent heard back yet. We will get it worked out though!
kscally - Hi, Kelly! I'm taking a break this year just to study with all my friends on the ring. Mary is busy with the triplets, but we need to meet.
Kiela - JoyH - nop in Rancho- with Larie
Kelly M - Dana, meet Mary Lou.....Mary Lou, this is Dana! Now you guys are on your own!
Dana in MS - You are sooooo welcomed Mary Lou!
JoyH - Kiela, who's Laurie?
Kinderjane - Dana- Are you having a hard time deciding which one to work on? Is that the problem?
Mary Lou - We got 10 inches of snow!! I've been looking forward to this chat all day!!
Kelly M - Yes, Kathy....now that you say that I did know you were waiting out this year. But I need you and Mary and Pat! You're my local lifeline!
Dana in MS - We are going to get this thing off the ground! Thanks Kelly!
Kiela - Joy H- the only one in a 300 mile radius who has passed the ecgen
Dana in MS - I think so - it is just all swimming around in my head!
Lana - Is Joy H the Joy we are chatting with?
Kiela - JoyH-She is great it is worth the drive.
Dana in MS - KELLY, why do we put off the inevitable SP?
JoyH - Kiela, Oh, I guess I should, then but I haven't gotten anything out of the big meetings or cluster meetings yet. I've gotten all my info from the one list!
kscally - I'm so glad that you are telling me that, Kelly. I'll get busy and call Pat.
Kiela - JoyH- I agree- I was not planning on going to another meeting
Kelly M - Dana - SP? What's that....I'm missing something!
Dana in MS - I hope I can get this done and certify! I have felt so good about it all along, then I am bogged down!
JoyH - I'm JoyH but not certified - if we confused you with our conversation
Debbie Mc. - Hi guys! I just wanted to say hi before my husband drags me off. Can you believe that I'd rather chat with you all than go out of town to shop?
Dana in MS - SP is spelling of inevitable!
Kelly M - Kathy - please do....maybe you guys could get me DONE with this #@%$ community video! I need your inspiration! I'll see Mary again Tuesday....we'll talk!
Dana in MS - Hi Debbie! We love your devotion to us!
Kelly M - YEA Debbie! You made it! Get your fix and then you can go off and have a great weekend!
Kinderjane - Dana- For me, literacy was easier than SS/arts. Are those the two you are trying to decide between?
Debbie Mc. - I really am addicted to this stuff. I know it's my calling.
Dana in MS - Jane, beg
Kelly M - Debbie - you ARE my twin! :)
Dana in MS - Between Entry 1,2,4,5 or 6 isn't that pitiful????
JoyH - Kiela, have you tried tapping the kids discussing a problem - hope that's not a stupid question
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, our gov. has a proposal (doubt if it willl pass) that all teachers be board certified by 2020.
Dana in MS - Opps I didn't know I sent "Jane beg!"
Lana - Debbie, where are you from?
Mary Lou - Wow, Debbie Mc. The teachers in my school don't even know what it is!
Kiela - JoyH- Yes- unfortunately, this is the worse class to do a community video. I have had a lot of turnover and behavior is the worst- but I love my class
Kelly M - Debbie - Illinois is trying to put in something like that, too. That's a shame - this was NEVER intended for everybody. They would really be misrepresenting what the Board envisioned if they do that!
Teresa - I don't see how you can make someone do this.
JoyH - Kiela - Now in all our class discussions I have kids talk and then call on the next kid just to practice for the video
Debbie Mc. - Kentucky. I think I'm so addicted to you guys because no one else in a 70 mile radius is certified. I agree Kelly.
Dana in MS - Kelly, I was asking why we put off the writing? We know better!
Kinderjane - Debbie- NB certified? WOW! I know many who are good teachers who don't have this kind of time.
Kiela - Debbie MC- my superintendent- said in the future she would only hire NB teachers. It was obvious she didn't understand the process
Debbie Mc. - Girls, maybe I was better off not knowing what was expected of me last year. I hate it that so many are worrying so much about the community video.
Kelly M - Dana - You would think I would know better - this is, after all, my third cycle with this stuff! But I've done the writing on my community up to the video....just can't seem to get a video I feel "good" about using!
JoyH - Kiela - don't even get me started about your superintendent. Are you at Onaga?
Lana - Debbie, I think it's wonderful that the politically powerful are backing this process. At least it shows support. You are fortunate. I don't think anyone in our state has a clue...
Dana in MS - Boy, National boards will really get a bad name - forcing teachers to do it! This has to be a volunteer project!
Teresa - We are fortunate that our state is giving us great incentives to do, that is a better approach, in my opinion.
Kelly M - Demands like that will never fly. There's too much "teacher shortage" talk to send people out of the prof. because they won't/can't do this!
Kiela - JoyH- thank god no- I am at Joshua Tree that should tell you everything
Mary Lou - Teresa, What incentives to you have?
Debbie Mc. - My principal has no idea what I've done. I just accept it and go on. I have a few close friends who understand and want to go through it. But state ed. assoc. and dept. of ed are pushing for more teachers to do it. Next year they may reimburse 75% of the fee and give raises and pay for mentors. I'm glad that it's taking off.
Kinderjane - Kelia- What kinds of things have you taped for com. video that didn't work?
Teresa - They pay the $2000 and give us a 12% pay increase.
Dana in MS - Kelly, you will get it! I have my videos - I am just avoiding the writing!
Teresa - if we pass.
Dana in MS - Jane, which do you suggest I do first?
Lana - 12% PAY INCREASE!!!!! WOW!
Mary Lou - Teresa, What state are you in?
Lana - Are you from North Carolina?
Teresa - NC
Kelly M - Missouri is at least talking about it. Kathy's district (she's here in this chat) is the city of St. Louis...and THEY are going to pay the $5,000 incentive to their teachers who pass (supposedly....) I'd take $5,000 a year! Of course my district won't do it for years probably!
meme - HELP ! What do you think of a science video of students "exploring" earthworms and then making a bin to watch them tunnel?
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, I don't know what you have on video, but you are too good, no great, at what you do to nit pick your videos.
Kiela - Kinderjane- It is student behavior. I've been doing morning meeting since Oct. My children also have a low level of language abilities. I can't get them to talk.
Kinderjane - In South Carolina (home of today's pres. primary by the way) we get the fee paid back and $6,000 a year for 10 years. Also, no recertification classes for 10 years.
Dana in MS - We get our fee paid in MS pass or fail plus $6,000/yr for 10 yrs = $60,000
Debbie Mc. - Meme, it sounds like discover science to me.
Kiela - Kinderjane- I have tried everything that has been suggested on the onelist
Kelly M - Meme - YES....can you get them "discovering" on tape. Mealworms are GREAT!
Kiela - I just keep the video rolling all day long
Lana - meme, it depends what the students say and do with the earthworms, I think...
Kelly M - Debbie - thanks....but my weakness is being "clear, concise, and convincing"!
JoyH - Keila - come teach in PS - I cannot believe how much easier it is to get students tested so that they receive the help they need. The parents are also very respectful and supportive of the teachers.
Kiela - On the positive- I have a science video.
Kinderjane - Kiela- What age/grade do you teach?
Jen - NYC, gets the fee plus 500 for supplies and release time, and a 3,600 raise a year
meme - I am using it to begin a unit on seeds, read about earthworms, then going to go into seeds, and plant a classroom gardening . Will that take care of the write up?
Kiela - JoyH- I may in the next two years. Especially since the pay salary is so much higher and I live on the west end of Yucca Valley
Lana - JEN, are you in New York City?
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, I have a book (thin) that was given to me when we went through Different Ways of KNowing Training. I used it and would be glad to copy and send it or send you the whole thing if you think it would help you.
Kinderjane - Dana- I would start with Literacy next. It is very different from community. I really enjoyed doing that one... Literacy
Jen - Yes, Brooklyn
Kiela - Kinderjane- First grade in a very rural low socio economic area. 12 of my childre are known drug children
Teresa - We also get three days to work on our portfolio and renewal credits for five years, pass or fail. The $2000 is pass or fail, also.
Mary Lou - Boy, I'm jealous! Maine doesn't do anything! I have to beg to get the 2,000$!
Dana in MS - Okay, Jane. I will try for it!
Lana - Jen, Do you know Ronnie Mann and Lorraine Scorr (something)?
Jen - I talke to Ronnie when I first applied, but haven't contacted her since
Dana in MS - Mary Lou, this is so rewarding in and of itself!
Debbie Mc. - Mary Lou, I had to pay all of mine and only got one professional day to work.
Teresa - NC has the highest (or second highest) number of certified teachers, so hopefully other states will see that and catch on.
Dana in MS - Meme, your earthworms sounds great!
Kelly M - Debbie - Do you think it would help me with the clear, concise, convincing writing?...or is it more geared to community? I would probably love a copy! Is it little enough to copy and send?
Mary Lou - Dana, I agree! I've already learned so much just by reading the onelist! Thanks, guys!
Kinderjane - Dana- I don;t know how to answer your private4 message! I will e-mail that to you! :-0
Jen - Lana, are you from NYC also?
Dana in MS - Okay, thanks Jane!
JoyH - Kelly M, is last week's chat posted on teachers.net or do I need to get it from you?
Kinderjane - I got the infamous white screen.
Kiela - meme are you doing earthworms?
Lana - Jen, I just got bumped and missed your answer about Ronnie and Lorraine
Kelly M - Joy - you need to get it from me....send me your email address and I'll send it to you.
bgail - Do any of your districts do anything in the way of rewards (as opposed to your state doing it)? I have been meeting with one of our assistant superintendents and she is interested in knowing what is happening elsewhere.
Jen - I only spoke to Ronnie when I was first applying
Debbie Mc. - Kelly it is "Building a Classroom Community". I'll look at it again and either copy or send the thing to you. It's not available to buy. I'll get it Monday. Send me your mailing address later.
Lori in Mn - Hi All-I have a question in literacy. I teach K and the student I chose to study is so low that I am having a hard time knowing what to do next.
Lana - Jen, I'm from Nevada. Our district brought Ronnie and Lorraine out to tell us about the process. How'd Ronnie get so involved when she's not a NBT?
Mary Lou - I think that my district is going to pay half and my local union is going to pay the other half next year.
Dana in MS - Hi lori!
Debbie Mc. - bgail, our super is supposed to be finding out what others are doing so that he can "reward" me.
Kinderjane - Lori- Where is he? What is he able to do now?
meme - Community video is a hard one. Some that i have watched that passed were of reading a book about behaviors and then the video was of the discussion of the book. The teacher let the students do most of the talking
Kelly M - Debbie - will do. THANKS!
Teresa - My county doesn't, but I have heard of others giving a lap top to teachers that are going through and they can keep it if they pass. I think that is a great idea.
Dana in MS - Good, Mary Lou! every little bit helps!
Lori in Mn - Hi Dana in Ms
Jen - That's werid, I should get in touch with her again, she sounded very into it on the phone, I heard last year they met every other weekend
Dana in MS - A laptop??? WOW
bgail - I tried the laptop suggestion....still waiting to see if she'll manage to find a way to get me one.
meme - Lori, why do you not choose another student?
Kinderjane - OOH Teresa- I want a laptop! That sounds like a good deal!
Kelly M - Mary Lou - Maine NEA won't help? I should bug Keith Harvie about that! :)
Dana in MS - I'm in NEA - so they help much?
Teresa - I have also heard of additional monetary bonuses if they pass.
Kiela - laptops are great!! My union gave me one because I am the local secretary. I use it only for NB haven't touched it for union reasons
Mary Lou - Kelly, Apparently they gave money last year to the Maine Leadership Consortium and they gave the money to NB candidates, but they're not doing it next year. (Either one of them.)
Kelly M - Dana - some do, some don't. I think in Florida they're doing a lot. NEA is very supportive of it, but the support varies state to state....
Lori in Mn - It is a she. She knows the letters in her name, after lots of singing! She can not remember what the story was about that we just read.does not know nursery Rhym. and only tells me video plots when I ask her to tell me a story! May be I should choose another-but I wanted to finish this sooooooon. My last entry to complete!
Mary Lou - That's the MEA not the NEA!
Dana in MS - Oh Lori, I envy your self-discipline!
Kelly M - Mary Lou...I know.....but with Barbara Kelley right there in Bangor I would think that MEA would get off their can and really be supportive of this!
Mary Lou - Lori, Does she have phonemic awareness, does she recognize letters and/or sounds?
CATHY - Lori I just logged on What is your literacy question? I assessed it last year. I
Debbie Mc. - Lori, what would you normally do to show growth?
Kinderjane - Lori- You might get some help from people who teach pre-school or pre-school special ed.
Mary Lou - Kelly, Believe me I agree with you!
meme - Lori, Just write about what she does. Read about literacy in K and go for it You can read "Starting out Right" on the National Academy Press reading room . It really helps .
Lori in Mn - She can give me a ryhming word-nonsense but it ryhmes. She can not match begining sounds that I say
kscally - Have to go. I have new responsibilites at this hour on Saturday, but I can get the archives. Kelly, are they available?
Teresa - what is that meme?
Mary Lou - Lori, What about "Concepts of Print"?
bgail - I have a communication log question that I know has been asked before! I know we're to send in the original, not a copy, but how of it do we send??? Does it count toward pages of documentation?>
Kinderjane - Lori- I feel sure you are using option A with this one. Can you see growth in her samples?
bgail - oops! That's how MUCH of it do we send?
Kelly M - Kathy - I'll write to you about how to get them! Look for an email from me tonight! :) Glad you came today!
Lori in Mn - Where do I find Concepts of print and starting out right?
Lana - bhail, I think it counts towards pages of documentation.
CATHY - bgail - 1 or 2 pages from differnet times of the year and it does count as part of the 15 pages
Mary Lou - Lori, Concepts of Print is Marie Clay.
bgail - Lori, look at Marie Clay's Observation Survey. Concepts of print is in it, and tons of other great stuff for assessing kids.
Debbie Mc. - bgail, send the pages that say the most about your comm. with parents. Show variety, depth, etc.
Jen - I just finished entry 6, and included 2 pages from my log that I though showed a variety of contacts
Tiffany - Concepts of print is Mari Clay-Observation Survey is the book
Kelly M - Lori - Do a search for Reading Recover - if you email me later, I'll try to find it for you. There is a place on the net where you can print out the concepts in print test and everything...I just can't remember where right now! Email me at lkelly46@cs.com
Lana - Have any of you chatting been assessors?
CATHY - I assessed literacy
Debbie Mc. - I have not assessed.
Dana in MS - I have that book by Marie Clay - loaned it to another teacher - i need to get it back
Lori in Mn - Thanks Kelly and Tiffany-what a group!
Lana - Are you glad you assessed first? I have friends who want to work on certification and are wondering. I didn't have that option.
Kelly M - Lori - that was "reading recovery"...I left off the Y....sorry!
Debbie Mc. - Dana, that book is too valuable to lose. Definitely get it back.
Dana in MS - Opps! Kelly, I need that information, too!
Dana in MS - Debbie, I will!
Debbie Mc. - Hubby's home. Got to go!
Dana in MS - Bye Debbie!
bgail - I found it helpful to look at the two little concepts of print book that are used--called "Sand" and "Stones".
Kelly M - Dana - I'll find it later tonight and send it to you, too. Lori - send me your email....
Kelly M - Bye Debbie !
meme - "Starting out Right" is available to read online at www.nap.edu/reading room
Dana in MS - Are any of you familiar with RECORD OF ORAL LANGUAGE AND BIKS AND GUTCHES by Marie Clay?
Lana - CATHY, are you glad you assessed before going through this process? (If you did).
CATHY - Yes, encourage anyone who is thinking about being a candidate next year to go and assess. they can clla the 800# to NB and get info
Teresa - Thanks meme, I will check it out.
Tiffany - Cathy-Is it making the portfolio process easier do you think? (are you doing the portfolio now?)
Lana - CATHY, they are offering assessing in Vegas. That's where we're from. Thanks, I will encourage my friends. It seems like it would be much easier to be an assessor first because HOW you write something is so important.
Dana in MS - It was recommended to me by a NBCT I bought it, but can't make a lot of sense out of it?! CATHY have you heard of it?
CATHY - I am a candidate now. Sometimes I find it easier but it is still very DRAINING
CATHY - Dana I am not sure what you are asking?
Kinderjane - Dana- I haven't heard of it. What helped me was Kid Writing by the Wright Group. One of the best of the many books I own.
Lana - I feel like I'm going to give birth in about seven weeks.... (with another due in the summer...)
Dana in MS - Jane, I started to order that book - wish I had now!
Kiela - Lana that is so true- good luck on the one in the summer
bgail - Please please no more books to buy! :) After the last chat I attended I went nuts ordering online. I must, say, however, that "Constructing Curriculum" is wonderful. I wanted to start the year over after reading it, but I team teach, and my partner wo
Dana in MS - Does it take long to get it?
Tiffany - I agree about feeling like your going to give birth, but we wont know if the "baby" is okay until November!
Kelly M - Lana - LOL - you'll feel like you're handing over your first born when you send off THE BOX! :)
MCS - Hi! Are all of you ECGEN?
Lana - Kinderjane, do you think that book would help at the AC?
Kinderjane - Dana- order on line. You will get it quickly.
CATHY - MCS - Yes
Dana in MS - I ordered the book What Scientists do , but I have not ever gotten it.
Kelly M - Dana and all - I missed the name of the book you are talking about. Can you say it again for this old lady?
Lana - ;)
Lori in Mn - I had troubles with missing pages in Constructing Curriculm but I called and the sent me a new one over night!
Kinderjane - Hi MCS! Most of us are EC-GEN NBPTC wannabees!!!
Teresa - Is Constructing Curriculum still available at a discount?
bgail - I got my Doing What Scientists Do right away.
Dana in MS - RECORD OF ORAL LANGUAGE AND BIKS AND GUTCHES by Marie Clay
MCS - Cathy, how much have you written? I'm MCGEN.
bgail - Teresa-last I looked it was.
meme - Many books are available on line to read. My favorite already mentioned is www.nap.edu, Just type in reading rooms in your search engine, there are several. I read many last year .
Teresa - where bgail?
Dana in MS - bgail, so you still have where to order it? I need to reorder and check on it!
CATHY - MCS 3 are complete, 2 mostly, SS/Art not started
Kiela - I also got Doing What Scientist do right away. I got it though responsive classrooms
Kinderjane - Lana- I don't know if it will help there or not. I have not even started thinking about that! It does help tremendously as a kindergarten teacher, though. Would also be good for first grade.
Lori in Mn - Thanks meme! I know they won't be closed for Presidents Day!
bgail - hang on a sec, I'll check my bookmark
Lana - Thanks, Kinderjane! I'm already freaking about the AC!
Dana in MS - Thanks meme! I will try that!
MCS - Wow, you're ahead of me. I'm trying to write my math today and just can't seem to get started. I need to go work on it . good luck with everything,.
Lana - MCS, what math???
CATHY - MCS Thanks you too!!
MCS - Lana, I'm doing MiddleChildhoodGEN. We have to do a math entry,
Lana - OH, you're MC GEN!
Dana in MS - MSC - what do you mean write your math?
MCS - Didn't mean to scare you.
Kinderjane - Lana- I really am trying to put the AC out of my thoughts. I am totally focussed on my portfolio right now. I am learning so much doing this and I'm sure a lot of it will help there. Esp. all the time I spend going thru standards as I write each entry.
Lana - We seem to scare easily!
MCS - Dana, for MiddleChildhood Gen. you have to do a math videotape and entry,
Lori in Mn - How long should I save for packing up the baby? Does it help to have someone else to the check list? How many people are enough/too much? What should we drink after?? LOL
bgail - It's at http://teachingstrategies.com, but it looks like it's called Building the Primary Classroom (says it's the newest update of Constructing Curriculum. No longer half price....
MCS - I just came to listen to y'all chat to see if I could learn anything from you.
Dana in MS - ok - had me worried for a second!
meme - Lana , AC won't be difficult, make notes on the questions in the AC booklet you will receive. Every question is so similiar to the book, For example in math, note all the strands for your grade level , the question will be the same, you just will not know which strand of math, it might be measurement or addition, or patterns.
Teresa - That is what I get for procrastinating. Thanks for looking!
Lana - Kinderjane, I agree about how helpful this process is. It really helps a person zero in on the "why" and "how" of what we do. Hard as it is, I do think we'll all be better teachers for going through this!
Tiffany - Kelly~ When will the list serve be "up" again? I am so sad when I turn on my computer and it doesn't say I have mail!
Kinderjane - MCS- our entries 5 and 6 are the same as yours.
Kelly M - bgail - I had ordered Constructing Classrooms from Barnes and Noble about three weeks ago....now I get a letter saying it's out of print! I'll have to go with the new one...which, by the way, I hear is really good....a few good additions since the older version
MCS - Has anyone found a PZM microphone anywhere?
Lana - Meme, is it true we can bring notes to the AC?
Kelly M - Tiffany - Earlier onelist said they'd be back on at 3:00 p.m. Pacific time....but now I see that they're saying 5:00 p.m. Pacific. That's another 3 hours!....hang in there! We'll get flooded with messages after that! :)
Kay - MCS- Have you checked Radio Shack for a mic?
bgail - I'd be interested in how it's changed. I'm a book hog, so could give this one to a friend and buy myself the new. It's an obsession!
Kiela - MCS- radioshack doesn't sell them- they are now called omnidirectional boundary mics
Lana - MCS, Do you know about New Venture and their expensive, but good mic?
meme - Lana, last year when I took it, we could bring hand written notes, we could not bring any copied pages or text books, just notes.
Kinderjane - MCS we have a PZM mic at our school, but I got a good video using another teacher's personal videocam with no external mic.
Tiffany - Radio Shack has the microphone, 49.99-It works great. If anything, picks up too much sound, I put mine on a washcloth so the sound muffles a little, but it is called omnidirectional boundry mic.
Dana in MS - Did the book Doing what scientists do come from Responsive Classroom?
MCS - Thanks! I'll try them.
Kay - Meme-from what I understand you are allowed to bring notes, but no bound material to the AC. Whatever you bring there, though, has to be left there.
bgail - I think I got Doing What Scientists Do from Heinemann
Tiffany - and any notes you bring, you leave there with them. I also read that you can't have food or drink! I don't think I can go 90 minutes without something... What a baby I am!
Lana - Thanks, Meme, any other words of advice? Suggested books to study?
Kiela - Dana in MS- That is were I got mine. It came within three days
Mary Lou - Dana, yes it does.
Kiela - Dana- it was published by Heinemann
Lori in Mn - Can anyone tell me how long it takes to wrap up our baby in THE BOX. Should I ask a friend to help?
Dana in MS - Kiela, thanks! My order must have gotten lost!
Lana - Kay, are typed and/or copied notes okay?
Teresa - I am taking the day off Lori. I heard it takes a good day.
Kelly M - Lori - it takes a LONG time - especially because you'll be freaking out because you're afraid you'll pack something incorrectly. I've heard that packing with a friend is a good way to go! I've always done it alone.
Kiela - Dana mine did to0 but with the Morning Meeting book- I emailed them, but hey are closed on the weekend
Mary Lou - Why does it ake so long to pack THE BOX?
Lana - Why does it take so long to pack the box? (Please ignore if the questions is too dumb...)
Lori in Mn - Which day are you taking off? I thought about that-but then who would help me
Kelly M - Lana - the folks on the list have LOTS of great advice for the AC...they're just holding off until right after the BOX gets sent in. Then they'll offer up tons of stuff. Serafin has great outlines to use to study from. Really, trust me, they will NOT let you down! :)
Teresa - Kiela is the Morning Meeting book good?
Kiela - I am also taking a day off to pack. I will be camping out at the local copy store
Teresa - I am taking off April 12.
Kiela - Teresa- It was suggested by the list- the best buy so far
Kinderjane - What is the best way to send the box? I want a service where I can track it if I want to.
Mary Lou - Teresa, The Morning Meeting book is fabulous!
Teresa - Fed Ex
Lana - Thanks, Kelly. Good questions, Jane!
Lori in Mn - I hope to get my coping done long before I pack
Kelly M - You have to put everything in its right place....all with barcodes....I don't remember it all exactly, but you end up with piles stacked everywhere...and you are SO afraid that you'll screw up packing after spending SO much time and sweat on writing! It really does take hours. I worked on mine all night the first year!
Kiela - Teresa it is easy to read with great suggestions and ideas
Lana - Kelly, doesn't each portfolio go in the envelop provided by NB??
Kay - I gotta go, girls. I'll check in later.
meme - Lana, the MS curriculum in math follows the standards well, I teach in MS but that is what I used for my notes in math.
Maria - Hi Everyone! Teresa, The Morning Meeting Book is great!
Lana - Bye, Kay!
Kelly M - Yes - being able to track it will make you feel better. Any of the overnight companies are good. It's worth it to spend the bucks and know that you can track it, etc. You can also get a phone call when it's delivered. You'll really not be able to focus on ANYTHING until you know that it has safely arrived. It's worse than children!
Kiela - I am so paranoid about packing the box- I called NBTS for extra bar codes. I told them I lost mine
Lori in Mn - Kiela-LOL!!
Lana - So are we saying Federal Express? Better than the post office?
Dana in MS - Hi Maria!
Teresa - You can't track the post office, I don't think.
bgail - You can track UPS, too.
Kelly M - Lana - yes....but then you have to put the contextual info in...and remember your classroom layout....and all that stuff....really, it does take forever. Hey, everybody, don't forget to enlarge your driver's license. That's something to do ahead of time. It took us a long time at Kinko's to get it right. For some reason it doesn't just enlarge....it's difficult to get it right.
Kiela - Fed Ex is the way to go.
Maria - Kiela, I missed this. Are you ready to send in your box already?
meme - The post office 's two day with confirmation tracking is safe , cheaper, and you can pull up the tracking on your computer, it is easy. It tell you when it was received , etc.
Lana - Great, our superintendant has a big party planned at the post office for the box send off. I may be a party pooper and go to Fed. Ex!
Kelly M - You can track with the post office now. They have an 800 number to call about it...if you send it overnight.
Kiela - Maria- I wish- I've got two more entries to type
Maria - Hi Dana? Did you decide on your science yet?
Kiela - Maria- a friend of mine last year- lost her labels and didn't realize it until she went to pack her box
Teresa - Someone I know took a picture of the Fed Ex man that sent it off.
Lana - Time to run some errands; so I'll say goodbye for now. Goodbye, Friends!
Mary Lou - Teresa, LOL!!!!
JoyH - With priority mail for extra $.30 you can get confirmation of delivery
meme - US Postal Service Delivery Confirmation. they give you a receipt with the web site to check on it.
Kinderjane - Bye Lana! See you next week.
Maria - Kiela, Whew! You had me going for a minute!
Dana in MS - Maria, we used the class pets - it was so funny! They built a maze (their idea) to test the hamster's favorite food
bgail - I need to take my daughter shopping! Yea, stress relief!!
Kelly M - Sending THE BOX will offer us all some well deserved comic relief....the stories everyone tells are great! :) One friend of mine made the mailboxes guy SWEAR it would get there on time...not just guarantee!
Kinderjane - Dana- Did yours work? You have that one?
JoyH - Unbelievably this morning I got stress relief from cleaning house - it was so nice not to have to think!
Dana in MS - Yes, I got my video - showed it to our nbct mentor and she said to go with it!
Maria - Dana, that sounds great! Did you do it as a whole group or small groups? It must be a funny video!
Lori in Mn - I'm going to clean my house soon-April 17th!
JoyH - And made the family so grateful!
Kiela - I usually shop and buy a lot of clothes when I am stressed. But because I am in front of my computer- I don't have time to go shopping. You should see what my husband has bought in the way of food.
Dana in MS - I did four kids at a time in their little "lab coats" Mens med. size pocket t-shirts!
Kelly M - You guys clean? Don't tell my family. i told them a long time ago that I'm domestically challenged.
Maria - You and me both, Lori!
meme - Good luck, Lori, I was a candidate last year and my house has not recovered yet.
Kiela - I've had a cleaning lady twice a week since I had my second daughter. I swear by her. Now my husband does too.
Lori in Mn - My husband can tell by the charges on the credit cards that I have not been shopping-he even asked me about it
Dana in MS - The kids were so excited - they measured, weighed, even checked the hamsters with the magnets to see if they had metal in them!
Kiela - Lori- I understand- now all the charges are for books.
Kinderjane - Gotta go. We're going out to eat. That's the only way my husband gets my undivided attention. We're going to stop at Staples and color copy my ss/arts srtifacts. I will have SOMETHING DONE! Keep your fingers crossed for me that I get a successful science vidoe this week!
Kiela - good luck- kinderjane
Mary Lou - Good luck KinderJane and have a nice dinner!
Dana in MS - Send me that info. Jane!
Kelly M - Good luck Jane - let us hear about it!
Kinderjane - Keila I kept your e-mail address. I'm still thinking on your #3 video!
Kiela - Jane- Thank you!
Kinderjane - Dana- I will send it now. Bye ya'll!
Maria - Dana, It sounds like a 4! How's the write up going?
Kelly M - Bye Jane!
Lori in Mn - I gotta go to. I am also going out to eat and a MOVIE-I haven't seen Anna and the King and it is showing at a cheap dinner with a movie place. Bye!
Dana in MS - Maria, I hope so! I haven't written it up - i am too good at putting the writing off!
Kelly M - Bye Lori! Enjoy!
Dana in MS - Bye lorie! Have fun!
Maria - We have mid-winter vacation for the next week. My husband is chaining me to the computer. I have to get most of these guys done.
Mary Lou - Well, I guess I need to go cook supper for the kids. Imagine, they have to eat!!! Hopefully, you will all still be here when I come back!
Dana in MS - well, girls, it is time for me to stop procastinating and write! say a prayer for me! You are all such dear friends! Bye Mary Lou, good luck, Maria!
Kelly M - Bye Mary Lou - talk to you later!
meme - Going to start typing the first part for my science video, in case I have another ? before your guys leave. Good Luck everyone.
Dana in MS - Kelly, we love you!
Maria - Bye Dana, I'm sending prayers and good vibes down your way!
Tiffany - How many accomplishment are you (anyone) documenting on entry 5? I think I may be doing the quantity instead of quality thing. I have nine planned but to do a good job I can't fit them all in nine pages. Suggestions???
Kelly M - Dana - you've got that backwards - I LOVE YOU GUYS! You make my day - EVERY day!
Kelly M - Meme - we'll probably be here for awhile - although I'll have to go in about 45 minutes
Kiela - Tiffany- I have 10- I ran out of space. I am having probelms with 6- but I may have that one squared away this weekend
Kelly M - Tiffany - go for quality. Maybe you could write them all up, then decide the strongest and edit out the rest. Or write them all up, send them to several people and see what their advice is about what to cut out.
Kiela - But as everyone has said it is quality not quantity
Maria - Tiffany, one suggestion I received was to make the descriptions as brief as possible. Put as much as you can into impact and significance.
JoyH - Maria, what state are you in?
Maria - JoyH- I'm in New York. Where are you?
Kelly M - Maria - you're absolutely right about the impact....that's THE key
Tiffany - Do you think it is a good idea to maybe roll a couple together? I was thinking about combining reading recovery classes I took with the grant I wrote for materials for a literacy library for our school. The classes led me to want to create the library. One accomplishment or two?
JoyH - Maria, CA - just wondered who was getting a mid-winter break
Teresa - When discussing impact...does it have to impact all children, or maybe it has only impacted one.
Kelly M - Tiffany - what about writing them as one (the grant) and then describe what led you to write it?
Julie B - Hi! Checking in after swimming laps and tubing in snow!
JoyH - Keila, I think I have a meeting I have to go Tuesday - if you learn anything compelling could you e-mail me about it?
Maria - JoyH it's a holdover from the energy crisis in the 70s. They thought they'd save $ on heating(didn't) but now we can't let go. This year I'm really happy about it!
Kelly M - Teresa - I think any impact is the good - but the more kids effected the better, I would think....
JoyH - Kiela - Or not, if I see you there
Teresa - No midwinter break in NC-we barely have a spring break this year (2 days).
Maria - Julie-sounds like a great day! I'm jealous! :)
Tiffany - Kelly~ okay, I will give that a try. This is the one I am stressed about, I have only taught five years and the first couple I focused on just surviving, Not much for this entry till the last two years.
Kiela - JoyH- no problem. If you want to meet with the Yucca group- we go over entries and videos. We discuss ahead of time what we want to work on and we do it
JoyH - THAT WOULD BE FANTASTIC!
Maria - Teresa-you guys got hammered this year!
Kiela - JoyH- I'll let you know the next time we get together- we were a little frustrated with the last two RIMS meetings
Kelly M - Tiffany - don't worry about that. Many have certified with few years teaching experience. It's HOW you write up the impact of what you've done! :) Also, don't forget, entry 5 and 6 together equal the weight of one of the other entries....
JoyH - Kiela - and frustrated with the cluster meetings, I hope
Teresa - Fortunatly the part of the state that I live in is much better off than others.
Kiela - JoyH- I wonder if anyone from our cluster has really started
Tiffany - I am counting on the fact that entry 5 $ 6 are only 6% each. Thank goodness! I read in the paper last week that the youngest NBCT is 29. I could beat that if I certify!
JoyH - Really, we talk about everything except the portfolio!
Teresa - that is an interesting stat Tiffany.
Kelly M - Hi BH - are you working on EC-GEN?
Kiela - JoyH-How true and the God Miles doesn't know which end is up
JoyH - I have some written on all except science
Tiffany - I am doing everything I can to look older in my videos though. My kids know when it is a video day by how my hair is (Up rather than down, I think I look older that way).
BH - Yes. I'm Betty from AL
Maria - Hi Betty!
Kelly M - Hi Betty! Didn't recognize you incognito!
JoyH - Keila - as his results indicate!
Kiela - Great! That is the way the other two from Yucca are. We bounce ideas and we are relly focused. We actually do more in our drive to the meetings together than at the meetings
Teresa - : )
JoyH - 023.
BH - Have worked all day on science entry. Thought I would take a break.
JoyH - oops, 2 year old typed that
Julie B - Is Tiffany talking about professional accomplishments? combingin them?
Kelly M - Betty - how's it going? I forgot - what are you doing for science?
Maria - Tiffany- do you think looking young is a problem?
BH - Just seems so overwhelming. can't finish anything
BH - soil
Tiffany - Yes, I was talking about how to fit in as many as possible, but stay within the page limits.
BH - but i hve made lots of progress
Julie B - No but looking old is....generally Ha ha! There are advantages either way-- I;;m 51, and some of my best accomplishments stuff were in the first 10 years and I couldn't use them. I had more time for accomplishments before I had 3 kids-- now teenagers.
BH - I like to finish one thing before I start another but that seems impossible in this process.
Kelly M - Betty - it is overwhelming, isn't it? But that's great that you see you're making progress! Just keep at it! (That's my problem...I get side-tracked too easily!)
BH - Me too.getting sidetracked.
Kelly M - Betty - what else do you have left (after Science?)
Tiffany - I am worried because although I have taught for 5 years most people walk into my room, look at me and ask where the teacher is. I guess it is just one more thing for me to worry about in this process. I think I am pretty early in my career to try this, I'm honestly not sure I should be a certified teacher yet? I work my tail off... but I have a lot to learn.
Julie B - I did combine some-- the point I missed was that the whole thing is collaberation with professionals. A lot of my stuff was done individually statewide. I scored okay== I think 2.85 on it but it would have been better if I'd gotten that connection.
BH - Ieverything!! Am I negative today or what?
Julie B - They are trained to avoid biases like age...
Kiela - Tiffany- a friend of mine certified las year. It was her 4th year of teaching and she looked really young- don't worry about it.
Kelly M - Tiffany - but the thing is that we ALL have lots to learn! I've been doing this since the late 60's and I learn new "stuff" all the time! That's what's great about it!
BH - Actually I have rough drafts or outlines of everything except Entry 1 which I have not even attempted anything with.
Tiffany - Thanks for the encouragement! Days like today when it is sunny (rare in Oregon) I want to walk away from the computer and quit this process!
Julie B - I got my degrees in the early 70's and it was hard to test again-- last test was many years ago. Courses I have taken since have not had tests. I did okay on the assesssment day, though except 2nd grade reading.
JoyH - Kiela - was it someone in MUSD?
Kiela - Tiffany she teaches high school and it really her age really showed up. They are trained to avoid biases
Kiela - JoyH- No it is someone from Ontario. We went to the Inland Area Writing Project together.
Maria - Tiffany- Don't put yourself down! For a long time I thought that way too but now I want to prove what I can do! You can do it too!
Kelly M - Betty - I have saved tons of the "meat" of the messages on the ring since last fall. I have them in Word documents - would you like me to send you what I've saved for Entry 1? Maybe reading through all of that would give you some good ideas to start with.....let me know
Kiela - JoyH-The two other teachers and myself are the only ones who have tried and are trying to do this process
Julie B - Hi Kelly! I am re-doing literacy and science from the portfolios-- anything on those would be appreciated. Julie B Did you get much snow down there? It rained ice on southern Iowa.
BH - Thanks Kelly! I have been saving too. I think I have plenty of material just got to teach it and write, write, write.
Tricia - For Entry 5, what kinds of documentation are you guys using? I have quite a few letters, most of mine are the same thing. Do you think that is okay? I was at school this morning making copies of everything.
Kelly M - Julie B - what's your email? I'll send them later tonight (going out to dinner first!)
Julie B - Actually I probably have alot of it because I don't know how to save stuff like you did, but I'm great at printing! I learnd to use the computer (sort of_) because of this process, and I'm glad!
Kiela - Julie- do you know Lawrnie Seamans?
BH - Right now I am stuck on accommodations I made in science lesson-
Julie B - dbeckman@interl.net
Kelly M - Julie - I didn't even HAVE a computer when I started this process! I'm SO excited that I'm learning to use it! (getting lots of practice with this list and stuff!)
BH - I see very few accom. but they really were't needed. They were all doing fine wo any
Tricia - Couldn't do this without a computer
Julie B - No, where does she live? I am in SE Iowa on the Mississippi.
Kelly M - Julie - I pass right by you on my way from St. Louis to Minnesota (daughter in college there). I go right over that covered bridge in St. Francis (or something like that!)....know where I mean?
Kiela - Julie-no- I think she lives more int middle part of the state. She passed last year and has be an excellent help for me. I am from DesMoines originally
BH - Got to go. Hubby needs phone line. I will read post later in archives
Kelly M - By Betty!
Julie B - That's amazing Kelly, I've heard you referred to on the home page chat as being very computer literate. You must learn fast! I keypunched for a mainframe computer as a research assistant at U of Iowa 25 years ago.
Tricia - Has anyone finished their social studies entry
Maria - Tricia- I'm using a combination-letters, agendas with my name, and verification although I'm feeling weird about getting those.
Kelly M - Julie - I knew how to use a word processor (I was so proud of the one I bought a few years before this!) - but I spend SO much time on the net now that I'm getting okay at it!
Tricia - i am at the point of my closer looks-artifacts-
Tricia - just wondering what kinds of artifacts you guys are using
Julie B - I drove up to Minneapolis last weekend for a reception for an elopement! My dad still lives in Mason City on the way there.
Kelly M - Hi Sally - what's up?
Tricia - for social studies
Julie B - Our daughter is at ISU.
Sally - Hi KellyM I am trying to write entry 6 and wanted a break.Thought I would listen in for awhile
Kelly M - Julie - Jamie (my daughter) is a Junior at Carleton in Northfield MN...right off 35. I go up several times each year.
Tricia - my sister was born in mason city
Tricia - i used to live near there
Julie B - artifacts-- for which one? I am using journal entry, drawing and writing words, for literacy.
Maria - Julie-what grade do you teach and which option did you pick?
Tricia - but back to the social studies, what i have now is a list/plans that a group made to present at our international festival, a thank you letter to a guest from the room, a hoe project, and kwl chart
Tiffany - For literacy is anyone using writing the child typed on the computer?
Julie B - Iam from Mason City! I was born there too.WHen? I lived there from 1949 to 1972. to
Julie B - I teach Kdg in at-risk population. I chose A.
Tricia - my sister was born there in 1978
Tricia - tiffany, i have a few pieces from the computer lab
Sally - Tiffany, computer writing sounds good, so technical!
Maria - Julie- I think i will too but I still can't decide which kinder to pick!
Julie B - I picked one and then remembered to sen home permission slips-- his better be yes!
Tiffany - I was worried that because it wasn't in their handwriting its authenticity would be suspect.
Tricia - i have my literacy child for sure- she has a lot of trouble with decoding strategies and transferring what she knows over to her writing
Sally - JulieB special permission slip for literacy?
Kiela - Oh My! I just ran to get my mail. I had a surprise. I had a parent tea on Valentines. A Board of Edu. Member was there- She sent me a thank you unsolicited. Yeah! What an artifact
Tricia - tiffany, it is interesting to see how they write from the computer directly or do you have them take pieces with them that are already written
Julie B - Maybe not-- am I thinking of video permission, hope so!
Tiffany - I made color copies of my literacy child's other work, and just like someone else said on the list serve the color copy looks better than the child's original!
Tricia - most of my kids write from scratch right there, that is pretty authentic
JoyH - Kiela - congratulations!!
Kiela - JoyH- Can you believe it it was Phyllis Swinnerton
Julie B - The color copy is so real, I have to feel it to know if it really paper glued on to paper or not. Even depth showed ( my child cut out an ice cream from a paper sack and worte ISCRM on it.
Tiffany - Tricia~ the time that I have a sample from he went there without a rough draft. As I understand the writing for the entry needs to be first drafts. In first grade we are just starting editing before typing it at the computer.
JoyH - Mrs. Claus? Of course I believe it!
pchard - hi
Tricia - i would think that would be great to have tiffany
Kiela - JoyH- I know but with everything MTA has had with the Board. It was a good experience. Your Dad is the only one who really ever attended these functions. He is missed
Tricia - what kinds of questions are you using for your child
Maria - Hi pchard! Are you working on EC GEN?
Tiffany - Thanks! I will use it. It shows one of the first times he used a blend, he wrote about a "tr"uck stamp on kid pix.
pchard - yes
Julie B - His fine motor is pretty poor, and his confidence. I haven't gotten to the questions yet.
Tricia - on your videos, if you can't hear exactly what the kids are saying...can you transcribe
JoyH - Kiela - Do you remember when I subbed for you?
Maria - Welcome to the chat! Just jump right in whenever you want.
Kelly M - Hey folks. I'm going to have to go in a minute. I just want you all to know that you can stay here as long as you want (well, the Spanish teachers' chat begins in about 3 more hours!) This chat's transcripts will be in the archives here at teachers.net in a few days. I'll post to the ring when it's available.
pchard - I am a second grade teacher in Cambridge, Ma
Kiela - JoyH- Was that when I was in Morongo?
wanda - meeting room
Sally - By KellyM, I will miss talking to you!
Mary Lou - Bye Kelly, I just got back on Chicken's in the oven!
Maria - Bye Kelly! Have fun at dinner! We'll miss you because we wouldn't be here wothout you!
JoyH - Yes - you had jury duty at the beginning of school. I'm surprised you moved to JT.
Tricia - pchard, are you going through NBC
Julie B - Bye ....stop in burlington!
Kelly M - I'm not leaving quite yet! But in a little bit. Just wanted to warn you! But I don't have to be here for you to stay!
Tricia - i teach second grade in south carolina
Maria - pchard-Cambridge right near Boston?
pchard - yeah! I'm working on my last entry..Literacy
Kelly M - Tricia - any word on the primary yet?
Kelly M - I'm here! How are you?
Tricia - what did you do for social studies
meme - Having difficulty with science goals for earthworms. I am using it as a life strand, discussing how the worm helps the soil to grow plants. Any suggestions how to word these goals?
Kelly M - Oops - that last one was for Sally! See, I'm not really THAT good at this computer stuff!
Kiela - Joy- UGHHH- I remember that. I was selected the first week of school. Last year I was selected on the last week. I must have juror written across my forhead. That was a hard year I switced grade levels mid year. Things are interesting at Morongo.
Tricia - not yet
Sally - KellyM LOL! Ithought that was my reply!
pchard - ya right near boston , i lost the top screen i don't know how to get it back! :O(
Tricia - meme, i did a science kit unit on soils in the fall, i have the manual that went with the kit and they gave us all of that stuff...goals and all- i can look and send you whatever i may find
Maria - pchard- try hitting refresh
meme - Tricia , thanks, email manning@ebicom.net
Sally - so, how close to done should I be right now?
Tricia - i will email you on monday or tuesday meme
Tricia - i am sure that i can find something that you could use
Kelly M - Sally - there is no real timetable - or if there is, I think most of us are behind on it! But you could sort of map out what you have left and then match it up with the calendar and set your goals for each week.....
Kiela - Sally- that is a hard one to answer. It depends on how you write.
Tricia - pchard, what did you do for entry 1
pchard - no it didn't help. . . be back on going to re-log in
meme - pchard, looking for any specific help on literacy?
Kiela - Sally- it takes me forever to write a page. Then I edit and edit. But I know others who can sit down and pound the words out
Julie B - I have a student teacher, so we are going to ficeo each other!
Sally - Kiela, I write slow and laboriously (?) until I get a rough draft
Tricia - I have s tudent teacher also
Julie B - oops-- video each other
Tricia - hopefully she will get into things and can help me out a lot
pchard - I was wondering about the types of questions people wrote for qustion 2...literacy
Kiela - Sally- that is me. I took a day off this week to do some typing in a fresh frame of mind. In six hours I got very little done.
Sally - Kiela, I am having a hard time getting entry 6 started
Tricia - my problem is that i dwell on one thing too long and i know that i need to put it and start something else and then come back
Kelly M - pchard - did you read Virginia's post the other day ? She was writing about the questions for literacy....
Julie B - My problem is that I get too stressed out while writing, and have trouble thinking clearly!
meme - pchard, our mentor told us to write about questions that we had from assessing formally, informally and observing.
Kiela - Sally- that is one I am planning on spending the next two days working on. I know what accomplishments. But writing it down is hard.
Tricia - we have started working every staurday morning at school- i can get so much more done in the mornings- too tired afternoon and evenings
Sally - Kiela, I have a lot of ideas, but struggling with format. I've been at it about 9 hours today
pchard - no i didn't..i'm surprised i missed it
Sally - Kiela, that is my plan for weekend too. Family is gone and #6 is my goal!
pchard - thanks (meme0
pchard - **(meme)
Kiela - JulieB- How true. In the middle of Jan. I freaked out. I had spend two solid weeks on Entry 2. Was stressing. Some how I got it my mind we had to be done in March instead of April.
JoyH - Sally - Family gone? Sign me up for that!
Kelly M - pchard - what's your email address? I'll find it later and send it to you.
Kiela - Sally- I have been describing each. Now I plan on writing why each is siginificant. And tomorrow how they impacted.
Sally - JoyH, convinced my hubby to take the kids and get outta town! I'm sure he would rather miss all the stress I will have writing this
meme - pchard, also include every aspect of literacy like oral reading to grammar and phonics,
JoyH - Sally - I dream of such a thing! LOL
Kiela - My children think the keyboard is attached to my fingers. Over Christmas I realized I had to do this when the children were gone or sleeping. My oldest (7) told me she was more important than the computer.
meme - Kiela, impact on students is the most important.
Kiela - but my in-laws and my husband are planning three weekend trips with the kids to give me the break
JoyH - The only time I get to sleep is when my 2 year old does so I hate to miss those sleeping times!
Kelly M - Hey Shirley! How ARE you? :) Glad you made it!
Sally - Kiela, how are you going to present it in the paper? 10 little activities?
Shirley - I am learning disabled at getting into this chat room! Finally made it in! Hello, everybody.
Sally - Kiela, sounds like my husband. He doesn't know it yet, but he will be going away in March too!
Mary Lou - Hi Shirley!
Maria - Well everyone, gotta do dinner then write. See you on the list!
Kelly M - Shirley - what was that message?
Kelly M - Bye Maria...see you on the ring....
Shirley - Kelly, I am just great. Finished my TOY paper yesterday. Rewrote my philosophy twice. Glad to get that off my back.
Kiela - Sally- One accomplishment at a time. I am presenting the log first. I have twelve that I could think of. I am going to type all twelve and then edit it down to the ones that I could describe with the most impact. I'll have someelse read it to help me
Kelly M - Shirley - good for you! I bet it's great!
Julie B - I have to wrap up my TOY paper too this weekend, it's a lot easier! And plan for school-- good thing it's a three day weekend thanks to George and Abe!
Tricia - are you writing about the communication log
Tricia - stick it in there
Sally - Kiela, sounds like where I am
Tricia - what is your toy paper
Shirley - Kelly, I just realized today that I do not have a video permission on my new student of two weeks. He was in the last video I made which was the one I was to submitt. Well, I've got my work cut out Tuesday.
Julie B - Teacher of the Year-- I'd never heard of it last year until the list serve (EC GEN), and they started it here this year. I don't know how long to make it-- I miss all those gentle guidlines about length, typ size , margins....
cathy - Tricia Are you in Cheraw? If so did you get the infor I sent on the countries?
Kiela - Sally- I almost didn't go thought htis process because of the writing. I was the type who always took Math classes so I wouldn't have to write. I am having as many people as I can read them and get feedback. My Mom does the red pen trick.
Tricia - yes, jennifer and pam used it. jennifer has already given hers back to me- thanks so much
Tricia - cathy, i will bring it to you at the next meeting
Shirley - Kelly, Look at page 4 under I. Instructional Context and notice the A. There are no B,s C,s D,s or any other letter in the entry. Do you think it is a typo? Email me back later.
Tricia - teacher of the year two years ago and just had about 8 prompts that i had to write to
cathy - Tricia sorry to be so late - I did not realize that you guys were doing it so soon. did it go well( the Festival)
Kiela - What a way to do teacher of the year. We vote at a staff it is funny why poeple get it. Last year she was voted for because she had a rough class and everybody felt sorry for her.
Julie B - eight prompts, but how long did you expound on each? Use any visuals, like documented accomplishment stuff! Now I know where it al is, and it would be easy to stick it in.
Kiela - How are the teachers selected? What type of prompts?
Tricia - yes, glad that it is over and i was so ready to get rid of egypt
Kelly - Shirley - email me about Instructional Context....I got bumped off and now can't get the whole message. I have to go now (for real!)...but eamil me about it and I'll get back to you. You all be good now! See you on the ring!
Tricia - i was voted on and then i had to write to the prompts for the district teacher of the year
Teresa - Does anyone know if we have to write about the communcation log...or do we just have to include it in there?
Julie B - The parents nominate, and then districts each choose two semi finalists-- but our district is large 350 teachers, and some rural districts only have 8 teachers to choose from. Oh well... I am doing it because I was so amazed that any of my parents got the paper, read the paper, and turned it in! Mine are very at-risk, and some illiterate.
Tricia - i have the prompts if they would help anyone
Kiela - That is great!!!!! Congratulations.
Tricia - they may trigger an idea of what to include, we could not include artifacts just our letters of rec
pchard - hi, sorry i got disconnected from the internet
Kiela - Our is only for the local union by site. So you have to be a member. Some sites only have 3 teachers as a member so the rotate. You can see why it is a lttle funny in my district.
Julie B - I worte about the communication log-- it was my artifact, and then I wrote about it. Not right terms.
Tricia - i have a party to go to - will catch you guys later on
Sally - I believe you have to write about the comm log.
pchard - can anyone give me a sample of one of the questions they had about their student . . . (literacy entry) THANKS! :O)
JoyH - I can't believe that!!!!!!!!
Tricia - nope, shower isn't free yet
JoyH - That was for Keila
Teresa - Do we have to write about it, though?
meme - Teresa, write it up in your entry about parent involvement, tell how you use it and how it helps(impact) your students
Julie B - I think so;.
Teresa - Thanks Sally.
Kiela - Yep!! that is at Sky and Yucca Valley.
Sally - Teresa, I would say how it shows the variety of comm. you do
Teresa - I am out of room! I guess I will have to rethink something.
Kiela - JoyH- I am our local secretary. We are trying to change it
JoyH - Keila - YV Hi or El
Julie B - it is important that it is two way communication with parents
Kiela - Yucca Valley El
Shirley - Julie B. I will e-mail you prompts for TOY if you need them. Let me know.
Sally - Teresa, I would include write up about log before anything else
pchard - ?
JoyH - Kiela - I'm actually shocked!! I was a student there...
Shirley - Anyone working on community?
Julie B - they gave us 8 prompts, just no guidelines for what we could send in, like newspaper articles etc.
cathy - pchard - try to think of questions about your child in each of the literacy areas - reading, writing, and oral. what grade level are you?
pchard - i finished that one
Sally - shirley, half done, can't get a good video yet
pchard - grade 2
Kiela - Many of the teachers have left the uniton. The award is sponsored by the MTA. Both schools only have three members. What do you do?
Kiela - Sally- how is you entry 3 coming along?
Shirley - Got my Responsive Classroom newsletter yesterday. The front two pages were about the important of play at recess. Everyone check it out. I subscribed to the newletter over the net. It was free. That responsive classroom and the list serve have helped me through community. I would have given up.
JoyH - Kiela - are you talking to me? What do I do for what?
Kiela - Thank you Shirley
Tricia - i read that article too shirley- i need to pass it on to my principa
Kiela - JoyH- sorry- I am just frusturated with the whole situation. This award is a good thing that is falling apart.
Shirley - Sally, What grade do you teach?
cathy - pchard - check your local standards or goals and turn them into questions. What reading level is the child? Does the child read and comprehend? How does the child attack known words? I'm pre-K so these may not be appropriate but they are in the right diresction
Teresa - Does the newsletter come in the mail or over email?
pchard - oh thanks so much, that helps Cathy
Tricia - teresa, it is a regular mail thing
Shirley - I think I'm going to photo copy and put in teachers mailboxes. I usually don't do that. This was such good info to back up why we give them play breaks. I teach in a primary school.
JoyH - Kiela - my bad - didn't realize it was rhetorical - DUH!
Shirley - Factories give breaks. How do we expect little ones to sit all day?
SallyH - Sorry computer kicked me off. I teach K
Teresa - We had a discussion about this at our faculty meeting on Thursday. I'll have to check it out.
Shirley - Teresa, I signed up on the net and it is mailed to my school.
SallyH - Back when someone mentioned unions I wanted to say we are about 3 days from takin a strike vote
Julie B - How did you sign up?
Julie B - for the newsletter, not the union...
Kiela - SallyH- Oh no- not a time for that. I would be stressing
Tricia - go to responsiveclassroom.com
Tricia - just follow the directions
Tricia - have to go to this engagement party- see you
Shirley - Julie B. Go to www.responsiveclassroom.com I think!
Julie B - daughter needs computer...bye
SallyH - Kiela, my first questionto the rep was when will it happen. Not until Mar 19, I should have all the info I need by then to finish my questions
Teresa - It is org, not com.
Kiela - SallyH- then it can give you time to type.
Shirley - I'm really worried about rewriting my community paper and not repeating myself. I'm trying not to read last year's. Is anyone on chat that is redoing an entry?
pchard - do any of you know if we'll be getting more info...prompts/reading for the assessment center piece??
Kiela - I've got to go. Sally- let me know how your entry 6 goes. Hopefully we will both be done with it by the end of this weekend.
Shirley - Assessment info came in late Feb. early March last year.
cathy - pchard - I believe you get stuff after you send in your box - the experienced ones on the list have said they will give us new candidates infor after the april 17 date - don't worry about testing now
JoyH - Bye, Kiela!
SallyE - Bye Kiela, darn computer keeps acting up
Shirley - Sally-Are you new cand. or banking?
SallyE - I am SallyH and SallyE, I am a new canidate
SallyE - Kiela, can I have your e-mail before you go?
SallyE - Kiela, thanks
Shirley - Have you completly (sp) finished any paper? I finished Entry 1 first last year. It was my best score. I spent a month on it.
Kiela - Sally - sure- if you want to swap entry six for feed back. Let me know-- kbonelli@telis.org
pchard - i keep getting kicked off too! What's up with this??This is my first time on
SallyE - Shirley, I feel real good about science. Few minor changes and it is done. entry 5 is a bit rough, but done, comm. 1/2 done
SallyE - pchard, you will Juno by chance?
JoyH - What internet provider are you using to get on, pchard?
pchard - Joy, massed.net
SallyE - Shirley, I created folders for the other three questions just so I would feel better
pchard - you will Juno by chance, what do you mean ?
Shirley - Sally-Did you check out the Morning Meeting book or Constructing Curr. book? I think I could have certified if I had had those two last year. We have very littleeeeeee help in my state.
JoyH - When I go on AOL I get kicked off but Netscape I don't
desiree - can anyone help me?
SallyE - shirley, I just received them in mail this weeK . It is my bedtime reading if I can stay awake!
Shirley - I know what you mean.
SallyE - Shirley, which questions will theyhelp me with?
desiree - i need a revisit on how to do a kwl chart effectively
desiree - pleeassse
pchard - be right back
Shirley - Sally - When my banker mini box came, I was blown out of my mind when it sait this year's paper has to be totally different than last years. I did plan to rewrite it, however there are strategies that I do in my room that are a must say. This is really going to be hard. I have been reading and saving since last fall. Glad I did that.
desiree - i need a revisit on how to do a kwl chart effectively
JoyH - Desiree, what do you need to know about it?
SallyE - Shirley are you re-doing community?
JoyH - Desiree do you know what the k,w,l stand for?
SallyE - Shirley, is Morning Meeting a must for comm?
Teresa - that is a good question SallyE, I haven't bought the books yet. Where will they help?
JoyH - For me Morning Meeting book 3
pchard - well i have to go start dinner now! nice chatting w/you all, thanks for all the help! :) talk to you all again!
JoyH - is A MUST for me HELPED A TON
SallyE - Thanks JoyH, I'll read it this weekend.
JoyH - The 3 was a 2 year old's typo!
Teresa - I have already done my video-so i assume AM Meeting will not help me for this (although I want it for next year.)
Shirley - Sally-Group activity supports the metacognitive aspect. We greeted in alphabetical order on Friday. I have had a parent return two mornings to stay for morning meeting. She has been my fund raiser chairman for the candy drive. I think she was fascinated!
Teresa - Am I right?
JoyH - Desiree, do you want me to explain all of KLW or do you know the basics?
JoyH - oops kwl
Teresa - misellib...not in here, please.
Shirley - Sally-I am redoing community, Entry 3. That was my worst score. Thought it would have been my best. I know I did not write it to the standards or my videos got mixed up or something! You know, no feedback. I'll never know. My self esteem flew out the window. Took me a month to get it back up thanks to the one list. I scored well in Entry I and Family and Communilty and Play at AC. I'm 18 points away.
SallyE - Where is moderator Kelly when you need her????
Teresa - I guess we just click on report abuse.
SallyE - shirley, no way you'll mis this time, 18 points wow
SallyE - shirley didn't you say you are 93% there?!
JoyH - Sally - the reading of it will go very fast - won't take long - I'd be lost without it!
SallyE - Okay JoyH, so you are suggesting I don't go to the video store tonight but stay home and read a book! :)
JoyH - It goes so fast, Sally, you'll have time for both - trust me!
Shirley - Sally-Creating Community is the chapter I am reading this Sat afternoon and relaxing why I do it. It is helping me. This book had to have been written by someone who was familiar with national standards. It is also a lot about what we already do well in our classrooms. It just makes you feel better about it and gives you rational. I am going to get out my standards and buzz words and mark areas of the book. Family chapter looks good. Will read it after this one. You know, kind of an ADHD teacher. Caught it from the students! :)
SallyE - shirley, don't you feel that the standards are things we do everyday anyway. Just writing it is difficult
JoyH - Shirley - what book are you talking about?
Shirley - Joy-Creating Curriculum from teachingstrategies.??? in Washington D.C. Not for sure if .com or .org. It is a great site like responsiveclassroom.org . The other book is Morning Meeting. Both are good for Classroom community and family partnerships.
JoyH - I ordered it with MM - haven't started that one though
SallyE - Joy and Shirley, I am going to go. I have been working on this project sincesince 9am and I am tired of sitting. Great talking to you! Besides, my computer is being too slow and I don't have the patience for it tonight. Is it taking your screen a long time to load?
JoyH - YES
Shirley - Sally-Amen! It is the writing that is most difficult. I'm still not for sure of the formula. By God's wonderful grace I made what I did last year. I had some lovely people praying for me and I.....prayed for myself. I was very selfish. I still want this certification. I will get no pay raise. I'll get it in my heart for a job well done. It is hardly heard of in my state. The superintendent sent me a letter of "good luck" last year. If I make it, what kind of statement should I say in the local support. The state support was great. My teaching peers have been wonderful. Local system could have given me days to write last year. I lost 6 teaching days to this project in the form of sick days. I sat a the computer my entire spring break. I will have to pray before I answer the question about local system support.
JoyH - I should go and get some NB writing done, too...
JoyH - Been on here for three hours...my bad!
SallyE - shirley your spritual inspiration has helped me remember to pray. I know the good lord helped me get through science!
JoyH - same here!
Shirley - Goodnight, John boy!
JoyH - Goodnight Shirley girl!
Shirley - Joy-We have to laugh through this!
