Debbie Mc. - Hi! How's the writing going?
Donna - I'm plowing through science and have a couple of questions.
Debbie Mc. - I'll try to help Donna.
Debbie Mc. - But I'm tired mentally today.
Donna - Do I need to refer to # of the goal when writing? If so, how do I keep my main goals separate from the specific goals?
Donna - Should I call the specific goals....objectives?
Debbie Mc. - You might want to say something like "goal #2 mastery was shown by" or activites that helped the children master goal #1 were...
Melody - Hello friends! Glad to be here!
Debbie Mc. - I don't think that I used the word objective but you can if it helps clear up your writing.
martha - I have found it helpful when rereading the entry to refer to the specific goal by no.
Melody - Got a Soc.St. question for a friend of mine. She wants to know if you address only TWO lessons in A CLOSER LOOK or if you can write about other lessons that relate to the two biggies???
Lana - I have a questions about artifacts. I did my literacy portfolio on Roger. Then I see that one of my soc. st. artifacts is work done by Roger. Different assignments entirely. Is there a problem with including Roger's work?
Donna - Debbie Mc.- when it says how do these(specific goals) relate to your goals for the entire sequence, how did everyone write up the two without confusing the reader. Maybe I don't need to be specific here. ???
martha - I wrote about three lessons in particular. I refered to others that supported the goal but, really only the three
Debbie Mc. - Melody, if you're talking about the "two learning experiences that were critical" she may not have room to discuss any more.
Donna - Lana, not sure, but I don't think your lit child's work can be used anywhere else.
Melody - OK, I'll pass on the messages. Thanks. She thought it was probably just the two.
Debbie Mc. - Donna, I'm trying to look at my science entry.
Lana - So, you think I ought to get a sample from another child? I can't belive that they'd dig through two portfolios of artifacts to make sure something hasn't been done by the same person! I HATE to think about going back and finding another example but if it's necessary...
Melody - I've had a technical snafu this morning.......can't get the crazy printer to print!!
Donna - Lana, I don't think they would look, but is this something you'll have nightmares about? :-) I'm already having them....my nightmares are about videos!!ha!
martha - I'm in need of catching a second or third wind to get myself to the finish line. Any suggestions? I'm feeling like I have one big hurdle to jump!!!
Lana - Donna, good point. I'm also at the nightmare stage....
Melody - I know the printer problem is probably one silly click, but unless you know what to click, you're outta luck!!
Kelly - Kathy - I'm hoping we get together this week - I'm on spring break, too!
Donna - Kinderjane, did you refer to specific goals numbers in your science entry?
Pat - I have a question on the verification form where it asks you to explain what the accomplishment was and why it is noteworthy. There is not much space to write in this box. How specific do they want these questions answered?
Kinderjane - I posted my nightmare on the ec-gen list today.
Kinderjane - Donna- Yes I did. To tell they had achieved them.
Lana - We should all post our nightmares; I think it would be highly entertaining and give us each a feeling of not being alone!
Debbie Mc. - Donna, I discussed that my specific goals for the videotape were centered around basic skills for invest. and comparing. This would help lay the foundation for the discussions on change(which was conntected to my goals for the unit)
Lois - Hi, I'm trying to start my science today. I did my video Wed. I teach K- I did magnets.
Kinderjane - Lana- That's why I'm here today. I needed contact with others of you going thru this!!
kscally - Kelly: Mary was tired today, but maybe will meet later. I'll email you later.
Lana - Kinderjane, Me too! It's really getting stressful as that date looms, isn't it?!
Donna - Jane, how did you handle ? that says how did the(specific goals) relate to the main goals? Did you just make general statements without the numbers?
Melody - Lois-what have you written about science?
Donna - Thanks Debbie Mc for looking. I like your suggestion to explain how it relates back to goal.
Lois - Melody-Nothing yet!!! I've been reading over questions, trying to get started.
Debbie Mc. - You're welcome, Donna.
Melody - Lois- remember 3 things: observation, comparing, communicating.
Debbie Mc. - Girls, remember that you're almost there. Just keep going a little longer.
Lois - Thanks, I'm STILL confused about my big idea.
Pat - Lois and Melody. I did my science on magnets. I'm writing it up now . I teach 1st grade
Teresa - Are we supposed to use the words "big idea"?
Lana - Are your school districts doing anything to support you as you get ready to send in your boxes?
Debbie Mc. - Remember, you can discuss the big idea, but it's not as important in our portfolio as it is in MC Gen.
Melody - Lois- you got me there. But there has been lots of good stuff on it---I think it was the Chat two weeks ago
Teresa - That is good to know Debbie, thanks!
Debbie Mc. - Lana, I sent mine in a year ago and they're still not supporting me.
crazed - Hi. I'm an ENL generalist but there are so few, may  I try to join you guys for pointers.
Kinderjane - Donna- I said "They relate to all three goals in that.... They relate to goal #1 in that... They relate to goal #2 because.... They relate to goal #3 because. Does that help? My entry 4 is at my "reader" now, so don't know if she will say that makes sense.
Melody - School district does ZIP to help!
Lois - I read all that, thanks. It's just hard to get started!!
Kelly - Debbie - that's interesting that you said that.....I happen to agree - but do you know that for sure? I've just sort of had a hunch about it.....
Debbie Mc. - MC Gen actually asks the candidate to connect. EC Gen does not ask specifically unless it has changed this year.
Pat - Melody why those 3 things? I used observing, predicting, classifying, etc.
crazed - Melody- My district too...NADA
Melody - Pat - our state framework has those three things as Kgn. objectives.
Lana - How about your principals? Support from them as you approach mailing date?
Melody - Pat - was yours 1st grade?
crazed - I can take a professional day which is cool.
Donna - Anyone want to share how they met integrated curriculum for science entry?
Melody - Principals - ZIP - even after Virginia's friend's pamphlet!
Kelly - This is the third year I've worked on this - my district offers NO support!...not a day....no one to help video - NOTHING. Nice folks.....
Kinderjane - No help from our districts. Teachers are taking their personal days to write.
crazed - Donna- did your kids write or read books? Did they make grphs or charts?
Pat - Melody yes I teach 1st grade
Lana - I guess we'll have to throw a cyber party for ourselves after the 17th!
Kinderjane - Lana- GREAT IDEA!!!
Melody - Personal daze, sick daze, I'm taking all I can get!
crazed - I'm celebrating by leaving my district and going to a new one!!!
Dani - Can anyone explain how to set up #6? Do you put Category 1 and then Accomplishment 1 under that?
Pat - Do we explain how we assessed the 3 science learning experiences?
Kelly - crazed - would that I could! :)
Debbie Mc. - Donna, I did mention specific goals with my three learning experiences. The first experience introduced the concept of....and I described the activity
Donna - We wrote in about magnets in journals, explored in water table, puppet center, magnetic board etc. Does this go under the instructional context section?
Melody - Pat - yes, those are part of 1st grade's objectives. As I remember, and it is BURNED into my brain, just observing, comparing, communicating were the main Science Inquiry Thinking Skills
crazed - Dana I got this covered. They said you dio not need to put them into the categories. THEY will decide what categories you cover. Just make sure you cover the mandatory one. I made no reference to the catagories and there has been lots of talk about this on the website.
Kinderjane - Dani- I did not list which category each is. I put them in order of what I thought was most important to leas (which was of course also important!!) :-)t.
Dani - Thanks, so does that mean I could just put Accomplishment 1, then 2 then3 and so on?
crazed - Hi alicebob.,.. What's up woth you?
Maria - I have a question for science - should I site the stuff I'm stealing from GEMS unit like concepts and skills taught?
Pat - Did anyone explain how they assessed student learning on the 3 science experiences?
alicebob - trying to get through the literacy section. almost there. still having trouble connecting to oral language. but doing it the best I can
Debbie Mc. - Maria, does it ask you to site or list resources used?
crazed - Dani- thats just what I did! Just did my accomplishments. and tied them into the standard whenever possible.
Lana - alicebob, I felt like I was grasping for straw when I tied oral language to my literacy artifacts!
alicebob - thank goodness for this net page, because no one else seems to be talking to me anymore
Kelly - Maria - I don't think you have to....we all get stuff from a variety of resources...I don't think you have to name them....
Dani - thanks crazed that helps me a lot!
Maria - Not this question. I'm writing the first one about goals, concepts etc. But I got some ideas right out of the book so...
kscally - I have to go early today. Just wanted to see what was happening. The chats are always so good!
crazed - Kelly I didn;t sight anything
teresa - lately, I feel like all I do is grasp for straws!
Maria - that was to Debbie by the way.
Kelly - Bye Kathy - talk to you this week!
Lana - As I get closer to the end, the less sure I feel about everything I've written...
Debbie Mc. - I agree with Kelly. We all get ideas right out of books.
crazed - teresa I so agree. I just went to an edit session today and the lady though I was a omplete idiopt during the first two pages. Thank god she thought they got better
Debbie Mc. - crazed, who thought you were a complete idiot?
Kinderjane - Has anyone checked out the BEST way to send the box? I'm not concerned about cost. I want reliable and something I can track. I think I'll have ready in time to NOT overnight it.
Melody - Pat - I quoted things the kids said from the video that showed comparison, observation, etc. Mine are English learners. I said they drew pictures later, another form of communication. I just kept saying how they explained what they saw and how I guided their remarks along the way.
martha - Lana, I feel the same way. I feel I'm groping for what is the "right" think to say.
Debbie Mc. - Lana, it will get worse after you send in the box and go back and reread it.
alicebob - lana, it is hard when you have the older kids to talk about the oral language. it seems it would be easier to make the connection with the younger ones
Donna - I'm interested too Kinderjane!
teresa - Crazed-that does wonders for the ego...especially in the homestretch.
crazed - My person who was reading my work Of course she didn;'t say it BUT you get the idea when they are looking at you like you have ten eyes.
Dani - do i have to site all of the people that I have had for guest speakers or do i just have to say that i have had them in #6?
Lana - Debbie, I can believe it; I wish I could redo everything from scratch right now...
Debbie Mc. - I sent mine priority mail and had no problems. My postmaster even called to make sure that it made it too.
Pat - Melody, did you use these as assessments?
martha - alicebob, you have 3rd.right. I do and I am having a hard time getting the literacy going. Any pointers?
Donna - Has anyone visited the site on the ring about simulation?
Debbie Mc. - crazed, was this an NBCT?
alicebob - I sent mine fed ex and had no problems
teresa - Is priority mail insured?
Maria - Debbie-How long did priority mail take?
Kinderjane - Dani- I would give an example or two.
Debbie Mc. - You can insure it and I did. For 2000 dollars.
Lana - I don't plan to insure my package; I don't think any dollar amount would be sufficient. I just want it to arrive safely.
Debbie Mc. - I can't remember for sure but it seems like it was two or three days.
Lois - Pat-what did your video show?
teresa - It's worth way more than that Debbie!
Kinderjane - Hey Teresa!
crazed - Yeah ...It got better when she read my other entry.
Melody - Pat - our directions last year said Evaluating the Learning. That's what I wrote about, no formal assessing.
martha - Jane, I've been told certified mail is the best. You can track and insure. My friend said she told them it was a priceless book.. Insured for $4000.
Maria - Donna- Simulations of what?
Dani - kinderjane- if i give an example or two can i then just mention that I had others?
alicebob - yes martha, I have third and chose a student that made progress from preprimer to a solid first grade level, but has had a major change around in attitude so i think he will make even more progress by the end of the year.
Pat - Melody thanks
Kelly - Donna - what do you mean about simulation....
Kinderjane - Martha- It is a priceless book!
Debbie Mc. - I just wanted enough to go through the process again.
Kinderjane - Dani- That sounds good!
Melody - Last year I sent the box FED EX. My husband tracked it progress every few hours: "Well, it's left our county, well, it's at the airport; well, it arrived at Texas airport.......:-)
teresa - That was smart thinking!
Pat - Is anybody first gade and what assessments did you use for the literact entry
Donna - Kelly it was the post about an assessment center simulation. I haven't visited it yet
Lana - Yes, what's the deal about the AC simulation?
alicebob - martha, go to the houghton mifflin eduplace for some suggestions on literacy. that web site was helpful for me
martha - alicebob, what are your formal ass.? I have plenty of informal and I can use other formal but, not anything I have done lately. What about weekly readers ass.?
Dani - do we have to mention the big idea that we are working under in our science entry?
Debbie Mc. - I'm first grade and I used checklists, discussions, writing, and had him complete his own checklists. We don't do any formal testing.
Lois - Dani-I've heard both, mention and not necessary.
Lana - Dani, I was so confused about the big idea when I wrote my science entry that I just didn't mention one... Better to keep my mouth shut and seem to be a fool than to open it and remove all doubt!
Terri - This is my first time here...is the chat at the bottom of your screen?
Maria - Dani- I mentioned it briefly. Hope they can't tell I really don't get it! :)
Kinderjane - Dani- I did mention two big ideas on mine.
Debbie Mc. - Dani, I think you should mention what idea you're using, but I don't think you have to use the words big idea or dwell on it for a lengthy space.
Donna - Lana, I know the feeling! :-)
alicebob - martha, I used a formal inventory called Qualitative Inventory Assessment. It is a formal reading inventory that I borrowed from my student intern. it was really helpful at giving an exact level.
Melody - Terri- no, it's in the middle of my screen
Lois - Kinderjane-what was your science?
Pat - Debbie how many assessments did you use. I assessed my child 8 weeks ago when I first staeting collecting artifacts. Shoud I do some more right now?
Dani - well I'm glad to see i'm not the only one lost!!!!
Debbie Mc. - Pat, I don't remember the specific number. Does the entry ask you to do some more assessing?
Kinderjane - Dani- When mine gets back from my reader, I will have more insight on this. She is top notch.
Terri - I'll be back...I only have an inch...
crazed - big ideas...patterns, change, systems
alicebob - pat, i gave an assessment at the end of the eight week period as required by the school system every nine weeks anyway. it is called benchmark testing.
Maria - Can you have more than one big idea?
Kinderjane - Lois- My science in on using mealworms. They are wonderful! My children love them.
Dani - so if my science unit was weather wouldn't that be constancy, change and measurement?
crazed - yeah but you are supposed to focus on one I think
Donna - Maria, I have two, but I focused on systems
Pat - When I looked at this entry 2 months ago i thought we had to show progress using beginning and ending assessments over 8 weeks. I have ongoing assessments from class but maybe i should do some more recent ones bfore i write this up. What do you think?
Lois - I'm assuming force for my magnets?????
Kinderjane - Maria- I don't know for sure. My first goals were about experimenting to determine meal worm preferences and designing a habitat based on those preferences. (Systems) My third goal was to observe them change to beetles as they lived in the habitat we created. (Change) Anybody have any ideas on whether I'm barking up the right tree?
Debbie Mc. - It depends on what you're doing with weather, Dani.
crazed - couldn't magnets be systems ...systems of thinks working together? Do you use FOSS. In the front of the unitss they give you where it ties to the BIG ideas in science.
alicebob - pat, the problem I was having was that i was focusing on the results of the assessments and not enough on the writing samples. the writing samples are where we need to be focused.
Maria - Where does it say to integrate science with other subjects? Is that what you were discussing a few minutes ago?
Donna - Lois, I'm using systems as the big idea for magnets
Lana - Kinderjane, I think your mealworm goals sound right on!
Dani - debbie - we were focusing on the water cycle and clouds along with keeping track of the changes in weather.
Pat - Lois I used systems and interactions as big ideas for magnets, but I agree that big ideas aren't that important in early childhood
Terri - I just have to ask...where are all of you in this process...I have 2 to write.
alicebob - the assessments just tell us where the child is at. the writing samples show growth. throwing oral language development in is an extra added bonus
Dani - debbie - or would it be systems?
Donna - Maria, I had the question-just not sure whether it should go under Instr. context or somewhere else. I know it needs to be addressed as a standard.
Lois - Donna-what grade level??
Dani - terri - i also have 2 to write.
Donna - Lois , Kinders
Pat - alicebob, thanks I'll remember that. This entry has been the hardest for me to understand and I used to be a reading teacher!
Terri - I've started the science...and haven't even touched ss...I have the week off to do it.
Lana - Terri, I'm "all done" those are "famous last words" I've uttered many times over the past three months as I've written and rewritten everything! Where am I? I'll be writing until the minute I hand the package to the post office... and I'm sure I'll be writing in my mind on the way home...
Lois - Donna, me too. I think systems would work too, I'm so confused.
Kinderjane - Terri- I am close. Four in the box and two at the reader's. My main thing right now is my class map.
Debbie Mc. - Dani, I think you okay with your big idea.
alicebob - pat, I know. I am retaking this portion so I am super nervous about doing a good job. I am evaluating each piece and saying how it needs to be improved. I feel like i don't know what I am doing anymore. just doing it.
martha - alicebob, I have samples of writings from all year and I have a fairly good handle on the child's oral language. I just have trouble being specific on the overall picture. I'll write to you sperately. Thanks for you help
Terri - So...is packing it hard...I haven't read the instructions...I'm just afraid I'll do something stupid and it won't be scored.
Maria - Terri- I'm starting science this wekend. I still have to fish 1, 3, and 5. Also editing and the extraneous stufflike copying etc.
Lana - Terri, I've packed three times so far! The last time only took me about two hours! ;)
Terri - I'm glad to see most of you in the same boat.
alicebob - martha we have been in touch before. I have a good grip on the child's oral language too, but pulling it from the writing pieces I feel like I'm not sure what I am doing. just praying for the best
Kelly - Packing DOES take a lot of time - just to it sort of methodically!....and you'll find you keep rechecking everything!
Debbie Mc. - Alice, I'm sorry the checklists were not helpful for you.
Pat - alicebob, what do you think was lacking in your entry last year?
Maria - That's finish! :)
martha - speaking of classroom map. Does this have to be very detailed and good artwork?
martha - Debbie, what check list?
Debbie Mc. - My map was not specific only labeled for items in the room.
alicebob - debbie, they were helpful. i used them. thanks
Debbie Mc. - I sent Alice some checklists to use to assess literacy skills.
alicebob - it is just that oral language bit-and making the connection
Donna - martha, I was told some used the computer and some drew it by hand. Don't overstress as I did. Its not scored.
Kelly - Hi Dana! Glad you made it! Martha - I used graph paper to make mine - I'm a TERRIBLE artist!
Debbie Mc. - It just gives the assessors an idea of where you're located in the room during the videos.
Pat - alicebob, I feel the same way about oral language. I've never heard of evaluating oral language with riting artifacts! There are better and more appropriate ways to do this.
DANA CARBAG - Jane, i just read your email about your carrying your bag with you everywhere!
Lois - Did you attach the graph paper to the form or did you just submit your drawing Kelly?
alicebob - pat, I don't think I had enough information about the artifacts in my first go round.
Maria - Do you think it's ok if I use two sections of a scince lesson from two different cameras, different views of the room?
Pat - Debbie, can you send me the literacy checklist?
alicebob - I agree pat, like I said, it is probably a lot easier with younger students. mine are 8 and older
Kelly - I think I just submitted the graph paper version!
Kinderjane - Dana- I have all of my entries on a disk that I keep in my pocketbook. Also, second copies of everything at school.
Debbie Mc. - I did not use the artifacts to assess oral language specifically. I just said what i knew about his skills.
DANA CARBAG - Hi Debbie, thanks for your help this week!
Lana - Maria, my science video is from two different angles in my room. I never gave it a thought!
DANA CARBAG - Jane you are a smart lady!
martha - For oral lang. can we use classroom speaking or discussions?
Donna - Back to work on science. Good luck to everyone this week. You've been the best support one could hope for during this process. Bye! :-)
DANA CARBAG - Is everyone here finished your entries?
Kinderjane - Maria- Mine is part small group at a table and part large group on the carpet in grouptime area.
alicebob - Debbie I think I am on the right track. almost finished with the first section. moving on to section two of literacy in a few minutes
Lana - Dana, I don't believe I will ever truly finish!
Terri - I have 2 to write...1 &4
DANA CARBAG - no offense - but I am glad I am not the only pokey puppy around here!
Debbie Mc. - Dana, you're welcome for the help.
Lana - Dana, we're going to throw a cyber party for ourselves once we've mailed in the boxes!
Pat - I need to finish science and write literacy and tie up loose ends everywhere!
Maria - My husband says I thrive on pressure! But this is a little much! LOL
Lois - I have to finish 4 and 6. ;(
alicebob - pat you better get going
DANA CARBAG - GOOD! LANA, I NEED A PARTY! HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO IT/
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, how's the writing going?
Lana - We're going to sit by the computer with refreshements and just "mingle"!
Pat - alicebob, I'm working hard and I know I'll finish this
Kelly - Debbie - s l o w l y !!!! But I'm on spring break this week. I just have to decide if I can use 10 minutes of all the taping I've done. Once I've picked the 10, then I have to write it! I've written the first two sections, though...roughly....so it should not be TOO much!
Terri - Well...I have not worked on mine for a week...this week was p/t conf...etc
Maria - Sometimes I feel like I'm pregnant again. No drinking (I might fall asleep at the computer) All this extra weight ( from sitting and from lugging aroungd my bag. ) Not being able to sleep...
Debbie Mc. - Great Kelly! Can we still "chat after the boxes are mailed and the assessments are taken?
Pat - how detailed do we anser what the accomplishment was and why it is noteworthy on the verification forms?
Kinderjane - I put #5 and #6 "in the box" today- knowing that I can go back and work on them some more!! I am going out to celebrate.
Terri - Most of mine were3/4 of a page...but one was 1 1/2 pages long
Melody - Let's party twice! Once after Boxes; again after AC!
Debbie Mc. - Pat, these were not my strongest entries. I didn't have a clue about writing them up last year and no one to ask. So, I'll just say student impact and signifigance are very important when you write about them.
alicebob - pat, I am trying to finish by next friday so I can go on vacation with a clear head. I did the community entry and the literacy entry and will take one section of the assessment center- the literacy part. will this ring keep going after april 17th so we can talk about the assessment center.
Kelly - Debbie - I expect for us to chat for many years to come! :)
Lana - Good idea, Melody!
Melody - No, sorry, wrong Melody!
Debbie Mc. - Good Kelly. I think I have something else to send you, but it's not for NBC. I just want your opinion.
sally - Hi Debbie, guess what I am working on
Maria - Pat- I was wondering about the verification forms too because I just described my accomplishment. Didn't put significance(didn't notice that) now they're all signed. I was debating what to do...
Debbie Mc. - Hi, Sally! How's it going?
Pat - Debbie, I'm talking about what you write on the verification form that you give to people to verify. You have to type up in the box what the accomlishment was ans wht it is noteworthy. It's a small box. How important will this Be?
Kinderjane - Kelly- I think I just informed Melody.
Kelly - Debbie - plans for our school??? :)
alicebob - kelly will this web site keep going after the 17 of april so we can talk about the assessment center.
Lois - My mentors said it was not scored (verification forms)
sally - Debbie, well got up at 7:30 and have been at it ever since. Still have to do the assessment section
Terri - My ? is pretty silly on the communication log sheet do we type our number and the accomplishment # and page number on it???
Pat - Mria, I did the same thing! I sheepishly asked for them back sor I could write why they were noteworthy, but I don't know how important this is
Debbie Mc. - No, it's food related. I'm sorry Pat, but I'm really insecure about those. Mine were not "very significant". So show that anyway.
DANA (carbag) - I hope we stay together! For support, exchange of ideas, etc after the process is finished
Kelly - Jane - informed Melody about what? I missed something! and YES Alice - this ring is here to stay. It's already been going for 18 months....as soon as the AC is over we'll ALL need to start helping next year's crop! :)....and wait for scores.....
Terri - and if so does this mean I should have shrunk it with the letterhead stuff first and then filled it out??
Debbie Mc. - Sally, let me know if you need me. BTW, I live in western KY so I-75 is across the state.
Lana - Goodbye for this week, Everyone. Thanks for the friendly chat and good information. Good luck to all of us, and yes, let's keep in touch after this process has ended!
DANA (carbag) - By Lana!
sally - Debbie, would I pass you going from Ohio to alamaba?
Pat - Debbie, I'm feeling insecure about mine too. I think it's just natural to feel that way. It's hard to brag
Debbie Mc. - No, you'll be going through the central/eastern part of the state.
sally - Debbie, oh well. I like to make road trips, may sometime we'll cruise by your way.
Debbie Mc. - Pat, take it from me. BRAG about that student impact. This was my lowest score. I'm not a horn "tooter". I will be from now on though.
Debbie Mc. - Sally, are you going to Gulf Shores?
Debbie Mc. - Sally, Do you live close to Columbus?
Melody - We NEED this e-time, I tell you! I learn something new every time! :-)
Pat - Debbie, thanks for the suggestion. I'm done writing though. I hope I bragged enough
Terri - could someone tell me how I'm suppose to use the communication log...do I shrink it to meet the header????
DANA (carbag) - Me too, Melody!
sally - Debbie, we're starting out in Taladega AL then on to FL. I don't know where gulf shores is. Yes I live by cols.
Melody - Yes, I, too, say brag about student impact.
Kelly - We have this time for as many weeks, months, years as we need it! They're VERY cooperative...and always willing to help out educational issues.
Debbie Mc. - Sally, I have a friend at school whose in-laws live in Columbus. Their last name is Holley. Ring a bell?
DANA (carbag) - Hey Sally! Pattie and Jooy are in TaladegaK!!!
DANA (carbag) - Opps Joy from Al
Maria - Terri-I think you use it as is. The header is just for your written work not artifacts and such, I beleive.
Debbie Mc. - Are you going to the races, Sally?
Kinderjane - Kelly- Are ya'll still chatting during the week?
Melody - It is so comforting to know some groups really care about teachers.
DANA (carbag) - Debbie are you banking?
Kelly - Jane - a couple of us were in there last night. This week I had troubles getting in there - and whenever I did there was no one else there! But I try to check in there every evening about 10 Eastern time....
Debbie Mc. - Melody, I'm through certifying and I look forward to this every week. I feel left out every night around 9:00
sally - Debbie, actually we are going to the race on Sunday. My hubby's idea. I'm just along for the entertainment . Plan on telling pattie I would be in town for the weekend of Apr.16
Kelly - Debbie's our resident NBCT! She's one of my heroes! :)
Melody - I don't chat during the week......can hardly get all email messages read every day!
Terri - I thought we had to have Documentation for #1 on them, etc...I spent 2 hours getting all of my documentation to "fit" except for the logs.
Pat - In the communication log. Do you write about specific notes on the page or do you just describe it generally and tell inpact and significance?
Debbie Mc. - Dana, THANK GOD I'm through.
DANA (carbag) - I thought so! Great for you!
Kelly - Debbie - are you still going to read my entry for me? Hopefully I'll have something to send you during this week!
DANA (carbag) - Something said earlier made me wonder if I was confused!
Melody - I look forward to the news here every day.....just like the soap opera I tape daily. I've even opted to read email instead of seeing my soap, can you imagine?? I'm hooked!
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, YES I wouldn't miss it.
Pat - What I mean is do you say this log entry was from Jimmy's mom, and she....
Terri - very brief and the significant outcomes...
Kelly - This is addictive, isn't it???? :)
martha - This question is off the subject of NB. Have any of you heard of the Edison School Project? My school is probably going to become an Edison Project school. I'm going tomorrow to look at a school 6 hours away that is in their 2nd year. Any input?
Kinderjane - Debbie, When I certify, I'm not going to be as gracious as you are "I'm through certifying". I am going to shout. I AM A NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHER!!! :-)
DANA (carbag) - Isnt it strange how we feel like we have known each other a long time - old friends! I love it!
Maria - I know what you Melody. I'm hooked too!\
Debbie Mc. - Jane, Nobody here listens. Just my husband who says "Thank you, Lord" and "I thought you were through with that stuff".
Terri - When I make it...I'm going to give teachers in my state the support they deserve...without them having to pay for a $500 course.
Kinderjane - I know Debbie. I will be the same way! I want to repay all of you who have helped me along.
Melody - We need to keep the daily posts, at least, going or we will have POST PARTUM blues!
Debbie Mc. - Terri, They have to PAY 500?
Kelly - Way to go Terri! ME, too! And hopefully you'll all stick around the ring to help that way, too! We need you online!
Maria - Dana -I agree. You all are people I wish I could work with and see everyday. :)
Pat - You guys help me so much with the insecurity I feel about this whole process. When I chat with you I realize I', not alone and others are dealing with similar issues
Terri - the only help I have received was a workshop that promoted a college course
Terri - after the course was over...1 semester a faciliator 200 miles away has a bi-weekly support
sally - Terri, where are you from?
Debbie Mc. - Pat, I hope all of the candidates appreciate what Kelly has done for future candidates. Starting this ring was genius. I didn't know about it and I know that I could have felt much better about it.
DANA (carbag) - I plan to be here as long as you guys are here!
Melody - I can't believe all the wonderful support of readers in this group, and my support group, which is really good, refuses to read entries for us! Go figure!
DANA (carbag) - To try to help others wthe way you have helped me!
Terri - p.s. I have a nb certifed teacher 1 block away who has not offer to help. She is a trained facilitor ...she gave 1 workshop...I didn't go....it was in the middle of the week.
Kelly - Hey Debbie - I started the ring for selfish reasons! I needed help and I figured I couldn't be the only dummy struggling with this! :)
Debbie Mc. - I've heard that some NBCTs won't read because they're afraid candidates will blame them if they don't pass.
Pat - Kelly is a hreo in my eyes for setting up this ring. It has given me courage and persisitence to finish! God bless Kelly!
Debbie Mc. - I'm a trained facilitator and I love to read entries. I just wish more people around my area would take advantage of me.
alicebob - Thank you ,I probobly can't talk much about my moms project and I can't type fast
Maria - I can't wait till this is over and I can start pumping you all for info so I can set up support and encouragement in my district right now I'm the only one. :(
Terri - she will not even show her stuff
Lois - Yes, thanks Kelly for all you do, I couldn't do it without the support
Melody - Debbie - maybe that's it! I agree that this ring was a stroke of genius! What I would have given for this last year!
DANA (carbag) - I think some are just selfish, too - we have one of those at our school! It's like she wants to be the only one - weird!
Kelly - But I think that most candidates just want guidance and support....ideas to send them in the right direction. It's very personal what you write specifically.....
martha - Speaking of readers....I would like to have entry #3 read. I finished the typing today. I also have 5 & 6 almost finished.
Terri - Debbie...what is your email address...this ring has been my only support...I'll let you read....lol
Kelly - Pat - thanks.....but it's you all who make it great! I'm just enjoying soaking it all up! I wish I could teach with all of you!
DANA (carbag) - Debbie, I will gladly take advantage of you!!!
sally - Kelly, what entry are you doing? How is it going?
Pat - wheni pass I plan to support future candidates
Terri - I have heard that she only helps for MONey
Debbie Mc. - Okay Dana.
Kelly - Sally - I'm redoing Community.......
Debbie Mc. - So, this is an entrpreneurial (sp?) experience and I didn't know it.
DANA (carbag) - Debbie, I remember you saying you promised God to help others and you have certainly kept your promise!
Kelly - Terri - who only helps for money?
Melody - Debbie - may I send you my Entry #3?
Kelly - LOL - Debbie - you just set yourself up for some reading! :)
Debbie Mc. - Yes, Melody. As long as you send the $500. (Just kidding). I wouldn't know what to do with an extra $500 anyway. I'm just a teacher you know.
DANA (carbag) - Arent we lucky that she did, Kelly!
Pat - I have to go now, but thanks to everyone for all the help today
Melody - Virginia! I was just thinking about you!
Virginia - THat could be scary!!
Kinderjane - Hey Virginia! I hate to leave as you enter, but we are meeting friends for dinner. See ya'll next week! Jane :-)
Terri - well...gtg
Melody - Bye, Pat! Catch you later.
sally - Virginia, I will be thinking about you tomorrow when I start literacy!
Lois - Virginia-Thank you! I emailed you a couple of weeks ago about my community and you really helped me out. :)
DANA (carbag) - VIRGINIA! Our other hero along with kelly and debbie and serafin and ! So glad you are here! how do you have tiem to take care of all of us!!!
Debbie Mc. - She's a wealth of info, Sally.
Virginia - Do you have any questions, sally?
Melody - Virginia - No, thoughts of you are comforting......writing these entries is SCARY!
alicebob - Sorry I guess Your busy.
Virginia - Life has been crazy!!
DANA (carbag) - Virgina, just stay your sweet self - even with life so crazy!
Virginia - You are TOO nice!! Dana!! I'm still waiting for your entry!!
sally - Virginia, not yet. Havent really looked at it. I have reading recovery training and others have told me I shouldn't have a problem with it, but I am scared!
Kelly - Virginia - we just appreciate everything you do for us! I'm sorry you're so swamped.....we hate to lose your expertise, but we certainly understand!
Virginia - Sally, don't worry, just start writing and get it to me soon!!!!
DANA (carbag) - Virginia, it is coming - a migraine today has slowed me down! But is getting there!
martha - Virginia, are you still taking literacy entries?
Melody - Virginia - I mailed you a postcard of Disneyland yesterday!
sally - Wow, you mean you'll read it? or just get my questions to you soon?
Virginia - The problem I have is that Oregon couldn't afford to fly me over at the last minute (over $1000), so they've contractd my via e-mail and Fed Ex. I have to look at their stuff first now...
DANA (carbag) - Virginia I WA WORKING ON IT AND DECIDED TO TAKE A BREAK AND LOOK IN ON THE CHAT HERE!
Virginia - Ok!! I'll be expecting it!!
sally - Dana, why are you yelling? LOL
DANA (carbag) - If I can't type any better than this I am in trouble! LOL
Virginia - Sally, I will be happy to read your entry if it's within the week!!
sally - Well, that certainly is incentive to get it written asap!
Maria - Virginia-I hope you got my postcard from NY. Do you need any others? We're heading to Myrtle Beach in a few weeks, I can pick you up some cards on the way.
Debbie Mc. - Virginia, I gave the principal's pamphlet to my principal and he laid it on his desk and said he'd read it. I doubt if he will though.
DANA (carbag) - I wish we would all yell - my eyes are so tired it is easier to read and to type!
Virginia - I still love postcards!! My kids are getting a sneak preview of things to come and they can't wait!!
Debbie Mc. - Dana, Maybe you need to take tonight off.
Kelly - Virginia - I gave my principal the pamphlet, too....and she said "but Kelly, I already know about it"....this from the lady who tells people that I'm ON a National Board! Geez!
sally - Dana, go ahead a use caps!
Virginia - Debbie, just keep poking the pamphlet in his face. Did you give one to your superintendent?
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, That's hilarious. I'm giving it to my Super this week.
Virginia - Kelly, that's pretty sad....
DANA (carbag) - thanks Sally!
Melody - Mr. Greco sent me several principal's pamphlets and I distributed them at my support group. They loved them. My principal and AP were opinionless.
Virginia - How many copies did you all get?
Debbie Mc. - I got two principals and one parent.
Virginia - Melody, of course...this means they have to change their ways of thinking and acting!!
Melody - I received about 15 copies of the pamphlet, give or take.
Kelly - Virginia - he sent me 2 principal pamphlets and 1 for parents....
martha - How do I get this pamphlet? My princ. is so supportive and our Sup. is great! Of course NC is really behind NBC.
Debbie Mc. - Wow, Melody. Did you ask for that many?
Lois - Does Mr. Greco respond to email or just written requsets via snail mail?
Kelly - Lois - email is fine - and he works fast!
Virginia - Martha, you should already have about 200 copies in your state. Your governor already requested them and got them ages ago!!
Melody - I am so impressed with Albertson's commitment to education! My husband works for that company and I didn't even know that!
sally - I love talking with you all, but I have a paper to finish and one to write by yesterday!
Virginia - Lois, Tom would rather have e-mail. He travels all over the U.S. all the time but always checks his mail daily!!
Debbie Mc. - Good writing, Sally.
sally - Gotta get started again!
Kelly - Bye Sally!
Lois - Thanks-I'll email him tonight.
Melody - I responded to Mr. Greco immediately after Virginia gave us the info on the post. He emailed me immediately, gave me home phone #, beeper, all info how to reach him and sent me a big fat envelope right away! I was impressed!
Virginia - My goodness!! I am impressed!!
martha - Kelly, is the chat session still on for evenings?
Kelly - Martha - I've had trouble getting in to the room - but yes, it's still on. A couple of us had a great time in there last night.....
martha - I'll check in on Tues. I'm going to be away on Monday.
Virginia - Kelly, how are you coming with your community entry?
Teresa T - Hi everyone...glad to see you still here! It is lightning here and I'm getting knocked off line.
teri - really dumb question...the portfolio is due April 15th o 17th?
DANA (carbag) - I will try to meet you guys at 10 central tonight!
Lois - How are literacy artifacts numbered? I'm doing option B??
Virginia - Lois, they are just number 1-8
DANA (carbag) - We are having a thunder and lightning storm here Too!
Debbie Mc. - Lois, I just numbered mine 1-8 if that's what you mean.
Kelly - Virginia - I'm on break this week - so I'm looking through all the taping I've done to try to pick out 10 minutes! I've written (roughly) the first 6 pages.....the last 4 are the reflection on the tape. So I HAVE to pick the tape to finish it! HOpefully it will be done by Monday so I can send it out!
martha - Virginia on the literacy arti. don't we have to label them?
Virginia - I'm looking forward to it!!
DANA (carbag) - Kelly, you can do it!
Lois - I mean the transcript page behind the actual artifact. Is that numbered too? Sorry I didn't clarify.
Virginia - Martha, in what way are you talking about?
Kelly - Virginia - do you think you will have the time to read mine? I know you are really busy. I would understand perfectly if you can't. It's my fault for being so late in getting it done! I have TOO many committments this year!
Lois - for example-cover sheet, artifact then transcript.
Virginia - The transcript page is not really considered a numbered page. It just goes right behind the artifcact for referral sake.
Virginia - Kelly, I promised you I'd read it!! I start my srping break next Friday. I never say no to friends!!
Lois - so, it doesn't need to be numbered? Also, on the transcript do we add proper punctuation in our typing?
martha - When I have an writing sample, do I need to give it a lable/title? I thought I needed to refer to them in the written portion with a title. Do I make myself clear?
Virginia - Lois, not really, you just write it with conventional spelling so assessors are able to read it!!
Virginia - Martha, I would give it a title, even if the child does't. It just makes it easier for assessors...
Lois - should i format it the way the student did? A poem for example. match my lines with the student's?
Virginia - Lois, YES!!!!
Lois - Thanks Virginia!! I think I'm clear now.
Virginia - You're welcome!!
martha - Thanks, that is what I thought. I must leave and go to dinner with my husband. I really do so little other than teach and do NB writing. Thanks to everyone who supports me! You are all angles and I pray for you everyday! Keep up the great work!
teri - I had to go check on dinner and I don't know how to go back and look up answers!!! Did anone answer my question about the exact date this is all due? the 15th or the 17th?
Teresa T - It says the 17th
BH - When we send in documentation for DA 5, do we document jsut our accomplishment or the impact it had on learning in our classroom?
DANA (carbag) - Virginia, if we use option A do the first four artifacts have to be dictaion or can a dictation later in the year in order to reflect oral language development?
Virginia - I'm guessing the 15th? I'm not a candidate so take it for what it's worth!!
Virginia - Dana, it doesn't really matter as long as you have 4 of each!!
Kelly - I don't know how to do anything but politely ask them to leave!
DANA (carbag) - Can there be some attempt and child writing on one along with my dictaion?
Phyl - I am currently working on my Science entry and I'm trying to answer the question: How did the learning that resulted from the experience featured on the videotape influence subsequent lessons? Initially I thought of this in terms of how one lesson built upon another for student learning, but now I'm thinking that this might mean what did I learn from watching the lesson on the videotape and how did they influence planning and teaching because underneath the question it asks you to explain how successes and missed opportunities from the videotaped lesson were addressed. How did some of you address this question?
Virginia - Dana, Yes, you could to show the process. I think it could easily work!
BH - What I'm asking is would I send student work to support what I said about the learning in my classroom?
DANA (carbag) - Attempt at child writing and dictaion on the same artifact?
Lois - has any submitted optional artifacts for science? If so, please elaborate.
Virginia - Dana, I think it would depend on exactly how much writing there is. If it is mainly scribbles, I know it would work to inlcude a dication. BUT if you have a sentence or two, i wouldn't include the dictation as this is plenty to look at and evaluate...
teri - I;m submitting the prediction and recording sheet that my children used during the video
DANA (carbag) - Okay, thanks Virginia!
Virginia - Lois, I can't help you as i didn't have that option and am not familiar with it...
BH - I'm taking a short break from writing. Thanks for all the condolences sent to me.
Lois - Thanks, just curious, I don't think I need to.
Kelly - Betty - how are you doing?
Virginia - Betty, how are you doing?
DANA (carbag) - Lois, I have artifacts for science where the children drew pictures of their findings from what they were doing in the video - I took dictation about their drawings
BH - Did anyone see my question about Entry 5
Virginia - Betty, ask again..
Teresa T - what was it???
Lois - My students drew pictures after I turned the video off, would this work as an artifact?
DANA (carbag) - Betty, I have been praying for you and your loved ones - you are a trooper to hang in here with us!
Teresa T - are you talking about science Lois?
Debbie Mc. - Phyl, I wrote about how I planned and executed other lessons (hopefully) better and connected these to missed opportunities and successes.
BH - Do I need to submit documentation of the impact on student learning that I wrote about or just the accomplishment?
Lois - Yes, sorry!!
Melody - Lois - I don't think there were artifacts with science.....just the video, right?
DANA (carbag) - Lois, I hope so! That is what I did, too
Teresa T - I am sending it a copy of a graph we did after the camera stopped.
Lois - optional artifacts, if you need to submit them/
Virginia - Betty, you need documentation of the accomplishment...not the impact...
Lois - Thanks everyone!! Back to writing. Good luck everyone :).
BH - Thanks for all of your prayers. I just want to cry and cry when I think of my nephew but I'm just blocking and working on NBC
Teresa T - I'm finishing up #4 and need a reader...any takers??? I have one more left also.
Kelly - Betty - is there anything we can help you with?
Teresa T - Kelly...I use to do alot msn hosting...lol
BH - Just answering my questions has been great help
Melody - Good for you, Betty! Keep your nose to the grindstone!
BH - and understanding and supporting like you do
DANA (carbag) - Betty, I don't want to upset you, but if you feel like it -how old was your nephew?
Kelly - Betty - you have a wealth of support behind you. You know we are all thinking of you after your tragic loss. This family is here to support you.
BH - 20
Virginia - That's true!!Kelly. I pray for all of us every day on my way to work!!
DANA (carbag) - Oh my goodness - my kids are 18 and TJ is 22 today! God bless you!
Melody - Yes, this "family"....we really have Community here, don't we?
Virginia - Dana,, I have a J.T.!!
DANA (carbag) - Betty, like Kelly said, we are a family
DANA (carbag) - Virginia! how old?
BH - I My husband has lost 3 brothers, 2 sisters, and I've lost 2 grandmothers in the last 14 yers.
Virginia - He's 12.
Kelly - Virginia - is he your basketball child?? :)
Teresa T - Did anyone in here score high in science????
BH - s like toomuch . It has only been since Christmas that we had the last death
Virginia - Kelly, yes he is!! He has grown another inch this past month!! He is now 5'8"
BH - Not enough time to recover
DANA (carbag) - TJ is after his dad. Is JT named after his dad? He will be grown before you know it! Virginia, doesnt your daughter play basketball, too?
Virginia - Teresa, I scored a 3.5 on the entry and a 3.875 on the assessment in science...
Virginia - J.T. is after his dad--but it stands for James III. My daughter quit the basketball scene, as she liked money more(a job)
Teresa T - ok...my ? is my goals...do I write them like the broad goals they gave us in entry #3 or do I write more specific objectives? What did you do?
BH - Well I'm getting off and getting back to work for some reasomn chat rooms make me highly anxious
Kelly - Betty - keep in touch on the ring....we're all pulling for you!
Melody - Bye,Betty. See you on the ring, OK?
Virginia - Teresa, I would write broad goals so your lessons can meet them. If you write them as objectives, there is no way you'll meet them.s
DANA (carbag) - Oh Betty, I hope I didnt upset you! God bless and we are praying for you!
Melody - Dana - don't feel badly. Betty will be alright once she gets her head into her work.
BH - You didn't Dana. I was ready to leave and it was my coice to answer your question. I've just not had much experience in chat rooms and it all moves too fast. I'll get better as I practice Though. Bye, now
DANA (carbag) - Thanks Melody - grief is soooo awful!
Melody - Dana - yes, just our presence will comfort her, I'm sure. These chatrooms are fast!
Melody - Did Virginia just get zapped into cyberspace Iike I did a few minutes ago?
Debbie Mc. - I still can't get to the nightly chats. I try about twice a week.
Kelly - Virginia must have gotten zapped....she wouldn't leave us without a goodbye!
DANA (carbag) - I know it made my head hurt the first few times I came in here - trying to keep up with how fast all of this goes!
Melody - That's what I thought!
Kelly - Keep trying, Debbie - they're still working on it. They'll be down tomorrow night for another hour of mainenance.....
DANA (carbag) - Debbie, I have had difficulty getting onto the chat. At first I didnt have any problem getting on
Melody - Yes, I had a notice that 6-7:00 pm Sunday we on west coast would be shut off.
Debbie Mc. - I get to the screen. It just says loading all of the time on the side.
Teresa T - well...I have to go write...thanks for all your help....tell Virginia thanks also if she makes it back=)
Kelly - The whole onelist will be down from 6 - 7 p.m. Sunday night (Pacific time).....
Melody - I'm not sure what the connection problems today have been about
DANA (carbag) - I get to the screen and it says it is done loading but the block in the middle where the chat is - is blank!
Kelly - Debbie - that kept happening to me this week. I just kept trying and eventually it let me in!
Melody - I had a blank screen too!
Debbie Mc. - I mean on th side where it says groups and members.
Kelly - Melody - what connection problems today?
Debbie Mc. - I'm too impatient to deal with it after about the tenth time.
Kelly - Debbie - that's how I get, too! I finally got in last night, and three of us talked for quite a while!
DANA (carbag) - Melody, Debbie, do you have aol instant message ? I am carrbagg on it
Melody - Kelly - first everything went black, like the machines were unplugged! And that is exactly what I had to do to boot up again! Then I started the whole process over again.
Debbie Mc. - You know that this is my hobby now and I'm awfully upset when I can't do it.
DANA (carbag) - Me too Debbie!
Melody - Dana - no to AOL, I'm earthlink
Debbie Mc. - I don't have aol instant message, but my son has downloaded ICQ which is okay but I don't have any friends on it.
Kelly - but I am on AOL instant message....you don't have to be aol to be on it....
DANA (carbag) - I am not on aol, but we have aol instant message!
DANA (carbag) - It is great!
Melody - How does one get instant message and how does it work?
Debbie Mc. - When I'm on sometimes, his friends actually knock to find out if it's him. The first time it happend I couldn't figure out where the knock was coming from.
Kelly - I think anyone can use it. Both of my kids are on it, too....and we talk all the time!....Neither one is on aol as a server....
DANA (carbag) - Lara has ICQ!
Debbie Mc. - Is aol instant mess. like a chatroom.
Melody - Is it like a party line on old telephones?
Kelly - Melody - it works like this ....but just you and the other person....
Melody - How do you notify someone that you are on the line? Does your computer ring?
Debbie Mc. - Melody are you talking about ICQ?
DANA (carbag) - Lara said to go to aol.com and just download it! It is great and makes a sound when you get a message!
Melody - Debbie - I was referring to aol instant message.
DANA (carbag) - Kelly, can't you have a group chat on it, too?
Melody - Hello Melinda!
Debbie Mc. - ICQ automatically lets the people you have added to your list know when you go on line unless you blind it.
DANA (carbag) - Melody, it has the names of your "buddies" who are on line and you can send them a message!
Melody - Debbie - how to get info on ICQ?
Kelly - Dana - I don't know! Possibly - I just don't know how to do it (just one of MANY things I don't know how to do on a computer!).....
Melinda - Hi! Sorry I'm late my husband would not get off the fun! I thought I was going to have a panic attack!
Debbie Mc. - My son is outside now and I don't know.
Melinda - I meant PHONE!
Kelly - Melody - Dana and I instant message all the time! It's great!
DANA (carbag) - Down in the corner where it says send message next to it is a chat thingy! I think!
Kelly - serafin's on it, too.....
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, we finally got another computer line. Our friends and family complained that they could never get us.
Melody - Is this anything like a phone line where one person get to talk unlimited to someone on a computer?
Kelly - lots of folks are, I just don't know who all is on!
Kelly - You can "talk" via typing on the screen....you can do that forever......
DANA (carbag) - Hi Melinda! We have two lines and you can tallk unlimited
Melinda - I have instant messages through hotmail, which the mail and intant messanger are free.
Debbie Mc. - How do I get aol instant messenger.
Melody - Very interesting!! You learn something new everyday!
DANA (carbag) - Sometimes it is hard stop chatting huh?
Kelly - Melinda - glad you made it! Any pressing questions? Debbie - go to aol.com and download it....it's great!
Melody - Yes, it's nice to talk with people and just get to know them!
Kelly - I know there's a way for me to send it to you....I'm sending it to Melody after we chat here....want me to send it to you, too, Debbie?
Debbie Mc. - Dana, wait till you're not doing this anymore. You'll want to chat to someone all the time. It's just a connection. I think NBC has become such a part of your life that it's hard to let it go.
Melinda - My niece has AOL buddy list and did the hotmail as well for friends that don't have AOL. Hotmail is available to anyone who is on the Internet no matter what service you are with.
Debbie Mc. - Sure, Kelly. Send it to me too. I don't want to be left out.
Melody - Melinda, what are you working on right now?
Melinda - I am writing SS and have literacy to write up as well.
Melinda - What was the final verdict on arial narrow
DANA (carbag) - Lara is checking out the chat on aol aspect and it is working!!!
Debbie Mc. - Gosh, if I get on something like that I'll never get anything done. I'll be lurking and waiting for someone to come online all of the time.
Melinda - I am having a very hard time staying within the page limits, especially in SS. I used 9 pages explaining my unit!!!!
Kelly - Debbie - we're going to make you totally dependent on your computer like we are! :)
Melody - Well, folks, thanks a bunch! I'm all out of cookies, my soda is finished, and my bottom is tired of sitting so long! Guess I'll get up and stretch! Thanks for all the info! Talk to you soon! Have a productive weekend!
Kelly - Melinda - you CAN use it - but it's not advised....it's too hard on the eyes of the assessors. You don't want to give them a headache!
Debbie Mc. - Wow, Melinda. That's some serious details. Okay Kelly. I'm already dependent. Maybe then I'll have somebody to talk to instead of just staring at it.
Kelly - Bye Melody!
Melinda - I am using garamond now and it seems harder to read than arial narrow!
Debbie Mc. - You all are going to think I'm crazy, but the idea of that second certification has entered my mind more than once.
Kelly - Debbie - you MUST be crazy! Which one would you go for?
Debbie Mc. - Middle Childhood, but I keep telling myself that I crazy to consider it.
Debbie Mc. - We got a box at the facilitator's workshop and mine just happens to be MC Gen.
Kelly - Hey - go for it! You might just as well be as crazed as the rest of us! And you have such a good handle on it!
Kelly - Hi Pattie!
thomas4 - Hey, everybody.
Melinda - For the SS artifacts that show assessment, I picked 2 that are at the end of the unit. Is this a problem for the question about how you used this to alter plans?
thomas4 - I am on spring break, la,la, la!!! I feel like a big spring chicken
Melinda - Me TOO! Alabama picked a great week for us!
Debbie Mc. - I'm not allowing myself to even consider at this point. The thought just keeps drifting in, just like the first time.
Kelly - Pattie - I am on break, too! But I have to write my community AND report cards! Not much of a "break"!
thomas4 - I will have report. c. s soon, but now I am just concentrating on getting stuff done without having to deal with teaching duties
thomas4 - Had bus duty for the LAST time
Melinda - Debbie, What grade do you teach?
Debbie Mc. - The How will my response be scored section does state that the teacher uses insights gained from assessments to make adjustments to strengthen the sequence while it is in progress.
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, I teach first grade.
thomas4 - Ok I posted this question on the list, do you have to have a one inch margin on the document sheets for entry 5 and 6?
Melinda - Yea Debbie!!!! I feel much better!
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, what do you feel better?
Kelly - Debbie - how would you do MC-GEN with your first graders?
thomas4 - How do you change the color?
Debbie Mc. - thomas4 if it says one inch, I'd use one inch.
Melinda - Sorry! My excitement must have launched me out of here!!!
Debbie Mc. - Does it say that 51% has to be seven before December? I haven't got that far yet Kelly.
thomas4 - It doesn't give directions that I can see for the document sheets. Just the commentary.
Melinda - Pattie, measure your document with a ruler, because mine at an inch was a VERY LARGE inch that needed adjusting!
Kelly - Pattie - email nbpts with the question. Supposedly they are answering very quickly these days...like the same day....
thomas4 - sounds like a good idea.
Debbie Mc. - thomas4 are you talking about the description form?
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, Why do you feel better? I thought I said the opposite of what you were doing?
thomas4 - Yes. Not the descriptions themselves but the documentation that follows
Melinda - Okay Debbie a misread your statement, now I'm depressed!
Debbie Mc. - You know, I didn't measure mine.
thomas4 - I am using the continuous essay style
thomas4 - And putting my documents as close to the descriptions as possible
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, let me get this straight. You want to use assessment artifacts from the end of your unit? What are you using for supporting artifacts?
Kelly - Hi Nancy! Welcome!
sinetag - I just came back from doing a big presentation on the NBPTS scoring process
thomas4 - Hi, Nancy.
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, remember that you should "select artifacts that help assessors understand the impact of your ONGOING assessment on the implementation.
Debbie Mc. - Who did you present to, sinetag?
thomas4 - Give us some secrets, sinetag!!
Melinda - I did a unit on our country. I have a tour guide book of children's written knowledge as they viewed sites. their group writing of thier own declaration of Independance from me! Assessment- built structures from DC. and Post interview compared to pre interview.
sinetag - there are no secrets in the National Board!
Kelly - Nancy - have you scored before?
Debbie Mc. - Is the tour book a supporting or assessing artifact?
thomas4 - I guess I should have said tips
sinetag - No, but I have been to the NBPTS Scoring Institute
Debbie Mc. - Is that two and a half days too Nancy?
Melinda - supporting what they are learning each day from their imaginary trip. It is a long unit, I know I'm not making much sense!
Kelly - Nancy - so when you presented it, was it to candidates or future scorers???
sinetag - it is 2 days
thomas4 - Ya'll enjoy. I have to go. Have a great day.
sinetag - to candidates
Kelly - Bye Pattie - talk to you later!
Debbie Mc. - Yes you are Melinda. Could you also use this as an assessment artifact, did you adjust anything because of the infor from these tour guide books?
Kelly - what helpful hints can you pass on??? !!!!
Melinda - I can use it for both. I can also use their structures as a learning experience for the art goal. It just seems to make more sense seeing their final project as an assessment for aquired knowledge.
sinetag - i'll be back in a sec
Melinda - I do want to use four different artifacts don't I?
Debbie Mc. - Remember the assessors want to see that you adjusted the sequence because of your assessment of the children's needs.
Debbie Mc. - My portfolio says on page 7 of this entry--"It is possible that the same Artifact could illustrate both your learning experiences as well as your assessment efforts.
Melinda - Their learning was so individualized as to what they learned about the structures, people they represented or functions within these that I accepted all learning. I teach K so I accept any knowledge gained as a success.
Debbie Mc. - Just remember that if you do use it for both, I would designate one copy for each time you use it.
Debbie Mc. - The decision is ultimately yours, Melinda. Do what you think is best for you.
Kelly - I'm hoping Nancy comes back with some scoring tips!
Debbie Mc. - So am I. I want to learn as much as I can about this.
Debbie Mc. - I want this to be my future occupation.
Melinda - I wanted to include a memory book that the children kept from their trip, but it is mainly dramatic roles and doesn't really focus on government or structures in DC, but was the whole schema for our learning, What do you all think?
Debbie Mc. - Connect it to your goals.
Kelly - Okay guys...I'm going to leave. I'll talk to you later! Debbie - I sent you the aol instant message invitation! :)
Melinda - Thanks Debbie, you have given me some more to think about. Unfortunately, think time is over, and writing must happen. I'll talk to you all later!
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, I hope your writing goes well. Thanks Kelly. Bye
Debbie Mc. - Should I wait for Nancy?
Kelly - Debbie - I"ll try to email Nancy and ask her if she has some good info for us about scoring!
Melinda - Good Afternoon all!
Debbie Mc. - Thanks Kelly. So I won't wait.
Kelly - It's just you and me!
Kelly - But this is SO slow! Instant message is fast!
Debbie Mc. - I'm off then Kelly. Bye and have a great week!
Kelly - Talk to you later! Bye Bye
