Kelly - Hello!
Donna - Hello everyone! How's it going?
Lana - Kelly, have you been to the AC before? I just called the one I'm supposed to go to. They assured me that notes are NEVER allowed! Time for some chocolate!
Donna - Lana, on the nbpts site, under FAQS, there is a question about what kinds of notes can be taken in. If I understand it correctly( who knows at this point) computer generated notes are accepted. I may not be right though.
Donna - Hi Jane, are you almost finished? :-)
Lana - We CAN take computer-generated notes or hand written notes. My local Sylvan is the problem. But I know it will be taken care of. This, too, shall pass...
Kinderjane - I guess we all need to call our local Sylvan and make sure they understand the rules about notes.
Lana - Yes, do it ahead of time. I have to travel over 100 miles to get to mine. I'm planning on going in the night before. I do not need added stress for the AC!
Lana - Hi, Amy!
Donna - I remember lots of stories last year about the differing Sylvan centers. It probably is best to call ahead.
Amy - Hello does anyork work in the New York City area?
Kinderjane - Donna- I'm close! I am going to pack 1, 2, 5 and 6 on Tuesday. My sister is going to help. She's good with details. I am going to revise 3 this weekend and maybe pack it to. I've written first draft of science. Waiting for comments from a reader.
Amy - oops
tbratt - Hello. This is the first time I have been able to get to this meeting room. I always forget. I teach k in Arkansas. I will be glad when this is over.
Lana - Yes, I plan on "visiting" the center the day before just so that they will be stressed too!
Amy - HI!
Donna - tbratt, Me too!
Lana - Amy, I'm in the Vegas area where there's a hotel called "New York, New York" but I don't think that's what you had in mind! ;)
tbratt - I haven't even thought about AC. I am still working on my entries.
Kinderjane - Hey Tbratt! You'l find lots of understanding support here.
Amy - nope
Amy - My friend says they have a statue of liberty there by the casinos. Is taht true?
Lana - Amy, all true! What a place! I live in Utah, but that's the closest AC for me.
Amy - haha my friend was right
tbratt - Somebody please help me understand about entry 1. Why is that you can use only 4 artifacts but u can have up to 12 pages. My mind is weak at this point.
Amy - so what is the topic here?
Kinderjane - I did my class map this morning. When I came out of Staples where I copied it on the form, I did a dance on the way to my car. I hope nobody I know saw me. I was just so glad to check one more thing off the list.
Lana - My district is having a "box party" on Tuesday. The press will be there - big "hoopla" - but I appreciate their support. My friend is bringing an empty box because she won't be ready yet!
Donna - Each artifact may have multiple pages as long as they relate to the experience.
Amy - okay bye!!! good luck
Lana - tbratt: More than one page of artifacts to support an artifact.
Kelly - DO call your local Sylvan - and I'd even call them more than once. If they say NO to notes, CALL nbpts immediately and ask for it to be put in writing to that specific location.
tbratt - that what I thought, just second guessing myself.
Lana - Kelly, I e-mailed NBPTS with that exact request.
Kinderjane - I'm scared to do mine with a big group. Don;t want to risk mixing things up.
Donna - Kelly, is it that important to check into the name on the driver's liscense issue? Would they turn us away because of a maiden name vs. an initial?
Lana - My box will be all packed before I go to the party. It's packed right now and calling me to recheck my videos just one more time... Funny how the box learns your name and can call it out, even in your sleep...
Kelly - Donna - you wouldn't want to risk it, would you? I'd check beforehand.
Kinderjane - For those who haven't started putting things together, there are lots of little details to cover. Your number in about 100 places, artifact cover sheets, classroom map and driver's liscence in #3 and #4, and on and on.....
Kelly - Jane - I missed something. What are you afraid to do in a small group?
Lana - I'm visiting the Sylvan Center the day before I'm scheduled to test. I'm going to be sure my ducks are in line.
Kinderjane - Kelly- I am afraid to pack my box in a big group. Scared something might get mixed up.
tbratt - Pat--how are you
Kinderjane - Lana- I would like to spend the night at the center!!!!!!!!!Then I know I would be there. It's an hour away for me.
Lana - Has anyone been to the AC? Any advice?
tbratt - I have never been at this chat before. You?
Kelly - Lana - but I think everyone should check out WAY in advance - and call and check more than once - about what you can take in with you. I'd hate to have someone "new" working there who didn't understand that I COULD! You should be able to bring in typed or handwritten notes, I think - just not books or copies of books....for some dumb reason....as if you'd have time to use them! :) (You won't!)
thomas4 - What is your opinion of creating a communication log on the computer and typing in the communications? I can't find anywhere it says you have to handwrite the log entries.
Lana - Kinderjane, I've got a room reserved at the closest motel; it would sure be fun if we could all meet afterwards for lunch - or dinner!
Kristie - Can anyone help with a Science question? Here goes...The inventory page #10 says 3 pages max. for Instructional Artifacts, but then in the box beside that it says Optional Instructional Artifacts (6 pages max.) Is this a typo or am I just not understanding this?
Donna - Kelly, are the artifacts in science and community scored in any way? I know they help the assessor, but if you've discussed them in the entry....... whats your opinion?
tbratt - thomas4--you can do that, it's permissable.
Lana - thomas4, that's acceptable and fine.
Kelly - Lana - that would be dinner! You'll have a 90 minute segment, then you can choose to take a 15 minute break. Then another 90 minute segment, and then a lunch break (I think it was an hour). Then repeat the two 90 minute segments. It's about 4 when you're done.
Lana - Kelly, have you been to the AC? What's it like?
Pat - Tbrat. I'm fine. I'm in the middle of my last entry - literacy and going crazy. The sequence for this entry has dogged me from the beinning. I thought I figured it out and now I'm not sure. I NEED HELP!
Kelly - Donna - It is my understanding that the artifacts in 3 and 4 are NOT scored - but rather to help the assessor "see"......
Lana - It was just stressful talking to the Sylvan person this morning; she was not nice.
Kinderjane - My classroom map is of my whole classroom. If I write names of children during my community video, they would be itty bitty. I did a separate "map" that shows the children's names. I want to send as an optional artifact. What do others think of that idea?
Donna - Kelly, does all of the typing of others get to you? Are all of the people scheduled at your time NBCs?
thomas4 - Are you candidates or nat. certified?
Lana - thomas4, I'm a candidate.
Kelly - Lana - I was there 2 summers ago....it's a REAL trip. Just VERY intense. You really don't have time to be reading through your notes. It would help you to be very organized. Don't worry, though. The ring is holding back until after the 17th to put up the study helps for the AC. I hadn't started the ring yet when I went to the AC myself....boy, do I wish I had had their outlines, etc. available! I KNOW I would have done MUCH better!
Donna - thomas4, I'm a candidate.
Kinderjane - Thomas 4 I'm a candidate. First and hopefully only time candidate!!!!
thomas4 - I emailed the Nat. bd with the same question but have not heard a reply
Lana - Whew! So glad to hear the ring will be providing advice!! Did they have the same questions we will have? How'd you find the AC as compared to the portfolios? If it's the same stressful situation, I may die before then!
thomas4 - i can get around 17 contacts doing it on the computer
Donna - Jane, does it say anywhere that we need to have seating chart? Just wondering if I missed something.
Kelly - I'm a banker - seems like forever the banker! The typing of the other people didn't bother me a bit. There will be folks there taking nursing exams, architectural tests, etc.....not just nbpts. They may come and go but you'll be so intent you won't even notice!
Kristie - I also need Literacy help. Do they want to see my notes on the child's writing samples? I have always made my comments on sticky notes and pu them on their papers. I usualyy don't write directly on their papers.
Kristie - Obviously I am having trouble with literacy. I can't even spell. Ha Ha!
Lana - Kristie, I didn't put any notes on the child's papers. That's because I never write on their work. I think your analysis of the samples is what's important. I wrote a question about writing on student work a long time ago. I got the response from NBCT that it wasn't necessary.
Pat - o.k. NOW THAT i'VE VENTED ABOUT MY TROUBLE WITH THE lITERACY ENTRY, i HOPE SOMEONE CAN GIVE ME SOME ADVICE. FIRST OF ALL, ARE THE ASSESSMENTS THAT I USED TAKEN BEFORE, DURING, OR AFTER THE 8 WEEKS OF COLLECTING ARTIFACTS?
Kristie - Lana, Great, Thanks!
Lana - Kristie, be sure you analyze each artifact from the oral, written and reading viewpoint - showing growth and areas of concern. (This advice came from Virginia, our in-resident helper)
Kelly - Regarding the AC - listen guys, this is purely my opinion...BUT - having been around this process for a long time, here goes. With what you will get from the ring and the booklet nbpts sends you, you will be FINE for the AC. You'll just organize your strands for math, science, etc. - and fill in the outlines for the grade level, etc.....you'll be so familiar with it that it'll just flow right out of you. And remember, everyone is under the exact same time constraint that you are, and MOST of them will NOT have had the benefit of what you're about to get for help on the ring!
Kinderjane - Donna- I'm glad you understood that. When I reread it, it was confusing. On the page where we put our map, it says, "It is helpful to the assessors for you to identify where particular students are located in the room by using the same student identifiers that you refer to in yuor written commentary e.g "the girl in the green sweater."""
Pat - oops! I didn't mean to shout. I didn't realize it was on caps lock.
Donna - Kelly, Thanks for the encouragement!
Lana - Kelly, thanks and I believe you - however NB sent us basically NOTHING to help us study for the AC.
Donna - Pat, at this point in the game, everyone is entitled to shout once in a while.:-)
Lana - Pat, mine were before, except for running records and informal inventories during...
Kelly - But our ring will be your salvation. I didn't retake anything there last year (nor am I this year). I wish I had because of all the help that developed on the ring last spring! If I'm still a candidate next year, that's exactly what I'll retake!
Kinderjane - Pat- most of mine were ongoing. Lots from the beginning of school.
Kinderjane - Hey Kay!
Lana - Kelly, you will be a NBT this year , and surrounded by friends who will celebrate your accomplishment with you!!!
Kay - Hey, guys. I haven't been her in a while. Wonder what I've been up to?
Kelly - You all will be covered fine for the AC if you stay on the ring! I promise you that! You WILL have to fill in the blanks and stuff from the outlines! But you will be extremely well prepared. Don't fret about it now.
Kinderjane - Kelly- How's the writing going? We have spring break this week, too.
Kelly - Kay - okay, I'll bite, what have you been up to?
Lana - Kelly, I'll be gone for a week at spring break. How should I set my one-list setting? Seems like there will be a lot of messages if I just leave it as is.
Pat - I have lots from the beginning of the school. But they were things like concepts about print and other early assessments. Recent assessments are mostly informal and our reading series tests.
Kay - Writing , of course. That was more a rhetorical question.
Donna - Our spring break is after Easter. I need it now, but I will enjoy(really enjoy) it later.
Kelly - Jane - I'm just finishing spring break. Still don't have a good video. I was SURE I did, and was planning to finish writing the entry up this break.....but alas, out of almost 7 hours of taping there is not ONE single 8-10 minute segment I can use! So I'm going in Monday morning with activity after activity that would work for community - and taping the whole thing!
Kinderjane - Pat- That sounds like exactly what you need!
Lana - Our spring break is just after the portfolios are due...
Kristie - I am third grade. Literacy has been very tough because my students are already very fluent readers. I am taking the approach of focusing on comprehension for chosen child. She seems to have more trouble comprehending material from expository texts. Any suggestions on how to approach language. I ahve talked about her oral presentations. Any other suggestions.
Kelly - Lana - go to onelist.com and click on modify my membership. Change your mail to "web only" - that will mean that they will not mail you any messages - that you would have to read those on the EC_GEN website - and then change it back to individual emails after you're back!
Pat - what I'm having trouble with is the flow between the questions I had about Jason and the assessments used. Early questions don't seem relevant now.
Lana - Ok, I don't want to miss any of the AC information!
Kinderjane - Kelly- What types of things have you been taping? Maybe we can help with suggestions that have worked for us.
Kelly - Pat - but can you tie those early assessments into what strategies you used - and then show with later assesssments how he improved?
Kelly - Jane - I've taped everything! But I never viewed the tapes for about 6 weeks! As I sat down with them last weekend I found that on many there seemed to be editing - there was a break every 4-5 minutes. On another that would have been good we had a fire drill about 6 minutes into it! Another time, again about 5 minutes into it, my former student teacher walked in and the kids went bananas! Stuff like that sabotaged every single segment!
Pat - O.K. then you are saying we are suposed to talk about strategies used all through this piece, not just what I will do in the coming weeks. If anyone recognizes me, they know that this sequence for this entry has confused me for months.
Lana - Kelly, my friend just taped her science video and it looks good. You can do it even though it seems late!
Kelly - Pat - I think you talk about what you did during the time from your original questions until your conclusion - so that would mean what you used to help the child with the weaknesses you noted in early assessments....right?
Kinderjane - I let the principal know when I was taping and made sure she didn't have a first drill planned. Also, put a sign on the door- "Taping. Do not knock. Come back later."
Kelly - Jane - I had told my principal. But there was a small fire in the kitchen! No harm done in the kitchen - but wrecked my tape!
Kelly - Hi AL - what are you working on?
liz - Hi everyone. I have some questions. 1. Can I use a childs work as documentation in 5 or 6...if I used their work in as a featured work sample in 1 or2? Next question...Can the verification forms be handwritten? Last question...Does the classroom layout show whole classroom or just the part in the videotape?
Lana - Kelly, you should've tied socks around your doorknob! Do it before the next taping!
Kinderjane - Kelly- I guess they can't postpone the drill for a real fire! :-0
Lana - Liz, yes on the verification forms. I'm not sure about your other two questions.
Pat - Kelly, am I going to have enough room? The questions that I had about my student - did I ask them at the beginning of the year.
Donna - Liz, I did the whole classroom and then marked my science center area. My video took place in two places in the room. Hope this helps.
Kelly - Jane - I have a burning question! How do you get your name to be in blue at the top of this page? I always put my email address in the box when I sign in to this room, but it never seems to turn my name blue! :(
Barb - Hi everyone! I have a literacy question--or actually probably 5,456 literacy questions
Kinderjane - Kelly- I just typed in my e-mail address. Don't know why that didn't work for you.
Kelly - Pat - They should be questions you had at the beginning of the time frame you're using for the entry....what were you looking to help the child with?
Kelly - Barb - LOL!
Lana - HI, Barb, fire away!
liz - Donna What do you mean you marked your science area?
Barb - First, I also have literacy artifacts for my student from the very beginning of the year. Am I better off just limiting my discussion to those within a smaller time period, or do I talk about the whole shebang??
Lana - The artifacts are the proof you use to backup what you write. If you can't prove it , I'm not sure you want to say it...
Donna - Liz, I labeled all of my centers and then drew an arrow from where the camera was located to where my kids were working. :)
Kelly - Barb - I think you get too much stuff if you use TOO long a time period....
Kinderjane - Liz- I wrote about this about 4:05!!! I did a map of my whole classroom. I did a seating diagram for my community video that I want to use as an optional artifact. What do you think?
Pat - I am so confused. OK so my questions I had about Jason can be from about mid-January, which is the time I began collecting artifacts. Is that how you did this?
Kinderjane - Hey Tricia!!
Tricia - Hey girls! How has your day been?
Lana - I believe the artifacts have to show how you attempted to answer your original questions...
Barb - So, you think I should maybe limit it to 3 months worth or something like that??
Tricia - My group met today and I packed two of the entries!
Kelly - Pat - yes - talk about what his writing samples told you about his reading skills - what needed work - what you did to work on them - and then how they progressed - or didn't!
Lana - Barb, yes, limit it. The writing has to be clear.. Kind of hard to do if you cover so much time!
Kay - Congratulations, Tricia!!
Donna - Liz, I stressed over this drawing, but was told that its not scored, its just to help the assessor "see" . We have other things to focus our energy on! :-)
Kinderjane - I did my classroom map on WORD. It is pretty easy to do. I did print, cut and paste some labels.
liz - Kinderjane That sounds good. Sorry I wasn't here at 4:05. I guess anything that helps the assessor to see the whole picture is good.
Tricia - Pat make sure you talk about oral skills...when you analyze literacy artifacts.
Pat - Kelly I think I have it. I should then formulate my questions from the artifacts? Is this correct?
Lana - My classroom maps look like the class pet made them.... I trust they won't affect my score
Tricia - Jane- did you just use circles, squares, rect, etc for things like tables and desks etc.?
Barb - My student embellishes his work with lots of drawings--even his thank you letter for a field trip was covered with little doodles that really worked WITH the writing. Do I include the drawings in my discussions?? One thing I've thought about is trying t
Kinderjane - Congratulations Tricia! I plan to pack 4 or 5 entries on Tuesday. Still revising science.
liz - Does anyone know if I can use student work samples for documentation in 5 and 6?
Donna - Lana, you sound like my friend when she was drawing hers. It just shows your class has lots of character! :-)
Tricia - I have pretty good computer skills so I hope that I can figure out how to do the map on the computer
Lana - I read on the nbpts site that someone said a person had passed only one portfolio entry and brought up the score to passing by doing well at the AC. Is this possible?
Barb - oops--trying to get him to use the voice from his drawings and get it into his writing, as well.
Kelly - You can also use graph paper to make your map. That helped me. I'm NOT a "drawer"!
Donna - Lana, I read that one too!
Tricia - I am still in the middle of analyzing both of my videos. Have started them but just not finished. Those are pretty much the only two
Tricia - just talk about the scientific process!!!! That is what my mentor made sure i was diong today
Kinderjane - Am I still here? I clicked logoff instead of update.
Tricia - hey martha
liz - Back to maps...Did you identifu students on the map?
Donna - Jane , you're here!
Pat - Kelly, formulating questions just from artifacts isn't right is it. What would be the point of assessments. I v'e heard that everything needs to be tied to the artifacts so maybe.?
Kelly - Lana - You definitely can bring up any low scores with any high ones. A friend of mine did not do well on most of her portfolio but did very well at the AC and passed. It's all mathematical. Those entries are only weighted 10, though - and your first 4 portfolio entries are each weighted 12.......Entries 5 and 6 are weighted 6 each - for a combined total of 12.......
Lana - Liz, yes students were clearly identified.
Kinderjane - Tricia- Try WORD. Draw is at the bottom of the screen. I don't have good computer skills and it was ealy for me.
liz - Lana Did you write student names?
Tricia - so you guys labeled the desks as to where students sit on the map
Kelly - Pat - you're right. You need to have some assessments to document your questions - then support with artifacts
Lana - Yes, just first names. That way the assessor can look at my map and see who I'm talking about when I'm writing.
Tricia - Thanks Jane, that will be a project for tomorrow. I am taking a break after packing this morning and I am going night golfing with some friends
Tricia - Thanks Lana
Donna - Tricia, I used Works. I think most of the word processing programs are similar. Kid Pix is one that I tried too.
Lana - Kelly, that's amazing! I guess I still don't understand the math of this whole process... However, it gives me hope, especially since I know our Onelist friends will help with AC
Kinderjane - Liz- I wrote student named in the science video on that map. If I write them on the community map, they will be too small to read. That's why I did a separate seating diagram.
Tricia - I will get busy on the map. I never knew it would take so long to pack one entry. allow plenty of time
Kay - When you created your map on the computer, did you shrink it somehow to fit on the form they provide?
Lana - I spent five minutes looking for the place on the side of the box where we have to put id tapes...
Kinderjane - Tricia- Why did it take so long?
Donna - Kay , yes I reduced it.
Tricia - That is okay Lana, we are allowed to miss such minor things that take thoughtless thought!
Lana - After we pack everything, we still have I D tapes left with our numbers, right?????
Kelly - You guys - don't stress over the map - it's not scored! Just do your best to help the assessor sort of "see" what your classroom looks like!
Kelly - Lana - yes - I had a bunch left
Kinderjane - Kay- yes I shrunk mine. I just cut the top off that sheet and put the reduced map on the bottom of it. I did not use their "square".
Tricia - Just making sure that you have your id number on every artifact..... and in the right order.....our mentor made us do this assembly line thing...it was kind of crazy
Pat - Kelly, thanks for the help. I think I'm about braindead. I waited to do this one last and my plan is to finish it by Monday night. I'm taking a personal day on Monday.
Kay - Lana, I have heard that you end up with quite a few leftover id labels.
Barb - In discussing the speaking and listening parts of literacy, do we only refer back to the artifacts, or can I discuss conversations with the child, etc???
Kinderjane - Hey Nancy!
Tricia - Yes, Lana there will be extra id labels left don't stress that you have missed something
Lana - Tricia, how many candidates did your mentor help? How often did you get together?
sinetag - good afternoon
Donna - Good luck on the writing and packing this week. I'm off to "CUT" 3/4 from my science entry. I obviously got off track and rambled somewhere. :-) It happens a lot!!!
Kay - Thanks, Kinderjane. I was wondering how to get my pretty map into that tiny square.
liz - Can verification forms be handwritten?
Kinderjane - Barb- What did he/she say about the artifact? Could he/she read it back to you?
Lana - Liz, yes!
Kelly - Hey Nancy (sinetag)- glad you could come!
Lana - Tricia, did you get my questions about your mentors?
Barb - so talk about discussions about the artifacts--rereading the story, discussions about feelings about the writing, stuff like that????
Kinderjane - Tricia- Which ones did you pack today?
Tricia - Lana, there were 18 of us- we met once a month. We are meeting once more before the assess center
liz - Thanks everyone. I find myself questioning all this little stuff. I don't want to miss ANY points.
sinetag - just stopped for a second - we are going out to lunch
Kinderjane - Barb- That's what I did.
Lana - Tricia, were there 18 of you and one mentor??? Was your mentor a NBCTl?
Pat - I have a question about the community video. I used 8 students from the class. Page 7 says at least six and that you don't have to use your entire class. Will I loose points because it's not my entire class of 28 students?
Kelly - If anyone has any science questions, hit Nancy with them before she leaves us!
Kinderjane - Nancy- That sounds strange. It is 5:00 PM here and we are getting ready to go to dinner. (We call it supper!)
liz - How are you guys mailing? UPS...Fedx?
Tricia - yes lana, she is a nbct. there was only one of her. My district paid her. We are the first of our district to go through.
sinetag - we are having a late lunch - it's 2pm
Lana - Liz, USPO - asking for the 35 cent tracing form.
Lana - Tricia, were you all EC GEN?
Barb - I team teach a class of 40--tried that and then decided I'd stick with taping a time when we only had half the class with us! 20 didn't seem like too many!:)
Kinderjane - Pat- The way I understand and from what I've heard others say, it is supposed to be your whole class.
Tricia - science scares me, i guess that is why i have been working on the others and getting them done
sinetag - if you mail at the last minute I would recommend only going with Fedex - UPS and USPS are not reliable enough
Tricia - no lana, 13 of us were. there was a high school soc studies, a middle language arts, a middle generalist, and a high school english
sinetag - (although NBPTS will mail you your results via UPS!)
Tricia - not as helpful for them because they were all on their own
Tricia - i know that i am going to start the year with each of these entires in mind
Tricia - i will be thinking, Can I use these for an entry that I may have to bank
Lana - Tricia, that seems like a LOT of people to mentor. How long were your monthly meetings? I know my district is going to ask me to mentor. I'll be glad to help, but I don't think I could help so many!
Tricia - That is hard part of waiting until november
Kinderjane - Pat- OOPS! ON page 7 it says, "feture a large group but not necessarily the whole class."
Tricia - we met one Saturday a month from 9 am until 3 pm
Pat - Kinderjane , page 7 says "feature a large group but not necessarily the entire class" This is in the videotpape section under bullet 6
Lana - Tricia, WOW, that was a lot of time. Did you receive any credit for it?
Tricia - we also had small cohort groups but i didn't meet with mine much because my roommate is going through the process also, we helped each other a lot
Tricia - no credit!
Pat - Kinderjane, after 2 previous attempts at whole class i gave up. The video seemed too chaotic and they eren't showing what I needed to show
Tricia - my district and my state payed for everything though
Martha - I have a question about artifacts. I understand the deal about using the same child's work in to "work-based" areas. One of the students used in ss/art has a great piece I want to use in science ( a non work-based area) can I use it?
Kinderjane - Gotta go. I hope when I talk to ya'll next week, we all have some entries packed and ready to go! Have a great week everybody!
Tricia - did you white out names and such in documentation on 5 and 6
Kelly - Jane - enjoy your spring break!
Barb - Thanks, Kinderjane!! I appreciate your help!
Tricia - i did on literacy and other artifacts but thought that I remembered we could leave them in on 5 and 6
liz - Martha I have the same question... I want to use work samples for documentation in 5 and 6.
Tricia - what do you guys think
Kelly - Tricia - you don't need to worry so much about that on 5 and 6. Obviously, they have to have YOUR name on them so they can be proof of your accomplishment!
Lana - Gotta go, have a good week everyone. Best of luck as we wind down this part of the process!
Kelly - Talk to you later, Nancy - enjoy your lunch!
Tricia - that is what i thought kelly, thanks
Martha - I need some help with specific questions related to the literacy in entry. I teach 3rd and am so tired of this process I can't get the questions to come. Any Help?
Barb - Thanks, everyone!! Bye!
Kelly - Bye Barb! Hey - anyone else with some questions or comments? Anybody need some encouragment?
Tricia - martha, what questions are you struggling with
Kelly - Martha - do you mean what quesitons you have about the child's developing literacy?
Martha - bullet 2 says What questions did you have about this child's literacy dev.? Just thoughts/questions? I can think of some like sentense structure, spelling, ???
Kay - That's what they're looking for Martha. You're on the right track. What other questions did you have?
Tricia - I asked things like does she use inventive spelling. Can she retell a story that she has read? What strategies does she use when decoding words?
Tricia - anything comprehension....can she retell a story to you or the class orally
Tricia - Does she have a good sight word base?
Tricia - Does she read fluently?
Tricia - Is this overwhleming you martha? or do these help
Kay - I think I hear Martha scribbling these down.
Tricia - :)
Martha - This is exactly what I needed THANKS!!
Martha - Kay you are exactly right. pencil going fast!
Kay - Martha-don't forget the oral part of the literacy development.
Tricia - I can actually get my paper and list the rest of them that I used if you want me to. I got a lot of a professional literacy book. I turned a lot of objectives into questions. Forexample: The student will be able to .... I turned it around and said Can the student....
Tricia - you can print these chats if you have a printer hooked up
Martha - Tricia that would be great!
Kay - Jerry Johns books are also very useful for this entry. Ask your reading specialist if you can borrow one.
Martha - I'll copy what I can.
Tricia - Can she communicate ideas to peers?
Tricia - When she shares her writing does she recognize mistakes and fix them orally?
Tricia - Kay, that is what I used...the Jerry Johns book
Tricia - does she wait to be told what strategy to use when she comes to an unknown word?
Tricia - Does she comprehend what is read aloud to her>
Kelly - WOW - Tricia - you're on a roll! LOL :) Way to go!

Martha - I'll e-mail you direct. Thanks. Have fun tonight!
Kay - I have a question about SS/Art.
Kelly - Are you Marthamassey?
Tricia - well then just look for evidence of if he or she is doing these things in their assessment and their artifacts
Tricia - I will be working full speed tomorrow. I will check my mail, write for a while and if you need anything just email me.
Kelly - Shoot Kay - we'll try to help!
Martha - Kelly, yes that's me... Thanks Tricia, I think I can do this.
Tricia - Go for it Martha
Kay - One of my goals is to have students create original works of art using form, color and design. One of the activities we did was batiking. Can I use a copy of one of the shirts as an assessment?
Tricia - sometimes we just need a little jump start
Kelly - Kay - I think you can use a picture of the final product. SOmeone suggested that we shouldn't use pictures of the kids working on them...but yes to pictures of the final product.....what do you other guys think?
Kay - The batiking was the last of several activities in the study of color, form, design.
Kelly - Kay - can you get a picture of it? Then take it to Kinko's and blow it up, crop it, etc.....send that.
Kelly - We should own stock in Kinko'l....
Martha - I don't see why not. That is the culmination of the project. Right? I think it is how you write up the assessment and how the shirt if into your skeem
Kay - I was actually thinking of taking the actual shirt to Staples to get copies.
Kay - Yes, Martha. My students then wore the shirts in the play we presented for their parents.
Kelly - Kay - that should work! And then talk about how making those met your art goal....
Martha - Kay, I would love to see the finished product. I love batiking and can see how that would be a great project.
Kay - The students wrote the play, adapting it from one of the books we read about Africa. Can the play be used as an assessment?
Martha - If they can't take a picture of the entire shirt, put the shirt on solid paper and take a picture. I had great luck having a picture inlarged for an artifact. Looks greatl.
Kay - I had never batiked before, but now I'm hooked. Our art teacher was very impressed with how my 2nd graders did on this project. She has never had students below 5th do this before.
Martha - Kay, your Ideas sound solid to me. That is assessment by my standards. Go for it.
Kay - Thanks, Martha. I'll try that.
Martha - I can remember doing batiking years ago in my younger hippie days. Glad to see those art expressions come back!!!
Kay - Some of my parents were just glad that their children created a shirt that they could actually wear out in public again:-) I now have at least one student a day wearing their dashiki to school.!!
Martha - Kelly, will this chat be posted later tonight or tomorrow? I couldn't join until late..due to motherhood duties. An I have to take this teenager to his party. I'll be home alone for several hours...Until hubby comes home.
Kelly - Martha - Mary has been getting the chat edited and in the archives either by Saturday evening or on Sunday. I'll post it as soon as I see it....but you can check here at teachers.net in the archives. It'll be right underneath the author chats if you scroll down in that archive window....
Kay - Well, thanks for the advice, girls. I'm off to put it to good use. Good luck this week with your work.
Kelly - Anything else Martha? Are you almost done except for the literacy?
