Kelly - Hi, kids! How's everybody?
kinderjane - BUSY!
Kelly - Jane - are you out of school?
Kelly - Oh, and Jane, I just voted in the poll....and there IS a place for K in the actual voting thing. It just wasn't on the mailing that went out!
kinderjane - Kelly, the children's last day was Wed., mine Thurday. I expected to have to work Fri, but got it done. I don;t start taking my room apart until the children are gone.
kinderjane - I did vote on all three polls. :-)
kinderjane - Hey Donna! Are you the NC Donna? Or the SC Donna? Or another one?
Kelly - Are you Donna who is having trouble reading the files?
Donna - Hi Jane and Kelly, I'm the NC one:-) ! How's everyone doing?
Donna - Yes, Kelly, thats me!
kinderjane - Kelly, I loved seeing yours and Lori's pictures. I like to have faces for names. I will try to get one on there, too.
Kelly - Donna - did you try to write to sinetag (Nancy Brown) and ask her if she can help? She seems to be the expert on translating that!
Kelly - Jane - I laughed when I saw that Lori had posted that! Me and my double chins! Now I can't travel incognito!
Donna - Kelly, I haven't yet, but I'll try later.
Kelly - Donna, Nancy often comes to this chat.....so maybe you can ask her here today!
kinderjane - When I said I got in, I only really got to the picture. (See where my priorities are- the more social areas than academic ones!
Kelly - Jane - you should post that great picture of you with your class - the one we saw last winter from your newspaper or something....
Donna - Has anyone here been to AC yet?
kinderjane - Not me- June 28th. How about you?
Donna - I go June 22th. I can't believe how fast its approaching!
Donna - Anyone ready for a math standards question?
kinderjane - Moralyn- We don't graduate, but have an end of the year kindergarten program. I don;t worry too much. Parents love the goofs more than anything! We had ours Monday.
Kelly - Donna - shoot! We'll try anything!
moralyn - we have been working on this grad. program for almost 3 weeks- too much pressure for the end of the year
kinderjane - Donna- I am working on those. I have some parts of all strands, and no strands completed.
Donna - :-) Thanks! Should I be prepared for Fractions, decimals, multipication/ division strands?
kinderjane - I am going to plan for fractions and some mult. and division under operations. I will focus mainly on addition and subtraction. I think the area will be broad, like "operations" and we can go which route is most appropriate.
moralyn - which book: Early Child./Generalist orGeneralist Portfolio Sampler) should I order for a good overview of program??
Kelly - Donna - I'd say yes to fractions.....but I'm not sure I'd prepare for decimals, multiplication and division!
Kelly - Moralyn - I"m not sure what those books offer in terms of stuff you can't learn from others. I had a sampler about three years ago.....and to tell you the truth, I didn't learn a thing from it....
Donna - Thanks Kelly, I'm Kinder and having a hard time with the mult. and div. strands for K. It would have to be extremely basic.
moralyn - thanks, saves me $40. I must say you and others are godsends
Donna - About how many topics are you preparing for science?
kinderjane - Donna- I think we will get a broad topic like "operations" and we can take it to addition and subtraction since those are more appropriate levels.
Kelly - Moralyn - you might want to ask on the ring and see what others have to say. Like I said, my only experience seeing anything like that was a couple of years ago. But seriously, with all of us out there with you....I'm sure we have LOTS more info than they could type up and sell in their book! :)
Donna - That does make more sense!!!!!!!
Kelly - Sally - have you been to the AC?
kinderjane - Moralyn- I bought the $40 book that is all the pages from the portfolio in a bound form. I wanted to see what I was getting in to. I'm glad I have it. I t is easy to transport and well worht the $40. It is not sampler. If you are interested, I'll go look at the title.
moralyn - I agree. there is nothing better than fellow teachers helping one another, more personal and caring.
Sally - This last month has been crazy with the end of school. My AC is the 14th and I promise to start studying tomorrow!!!
Kelly - Jane - thanks for the reference. That would make sense.....buying the actual pages that will be in the portfolio. Gives you a copy to lug around with you! :)
kinderjane - I know where you are coming from Sally! I signed up for the 28th thinking I would have all of June to prepare. NOw I have two 2-day workshops (not NB) and 3 out of town weekends between now and then ! :-0
Sally - Tell me I can get it all studied in 10 days!
Melody - Whew! I've been licking envelopes and stamps!!
Kelly - Hi Melody! Love those polls! Guess what? I'm in a state not listed! (Missouri).....so I checked "other"!
Melody - It is good to be out of school and have time to focus on study!
Kelly - Oops....did YOU write the polls Melody, or was that someone else?
kinderjane - Moralyn and Kelly- the book is Early Childhood Generalist Assessment and Scoring Kit.
Melody - Yeah, those polls are neat! It is so interesting to see where everybody is from.
Kelly - And Melody - I'm glad you're taking SASE now! You must have used up all that Christmas postage by now!
kinderjane - Whatcha mailing Melody?
Sally - Okay, what polls, I missed it.
kinderjane - Oops! I know what you are mailing!
Melody - No, polls were someone else in CA, was it Michelle or Joy?
Kelly - It's on the onelist website, Sally......there are three polls there. Click on polls and you'll be there!
Sharon - HI! What's everybody mailing?
Kelly - Oh yes, Melody - I think it was Joy........
kinderjane - Joyyoj did the polls. She took her assessment this week and seems to be filling her new found free time!
Melody - Yes, Christmas reindeer postage is gone! SASE was the way to go, but who thought there'd be such a response!!
Sally - Okay, I'll check it out.
moralyn - thanks Jane. about that math question before: I as a Kind. teacher have only taught add. and sub., never multiplication or div.
Melody - Moralyn, your math will be to your age group----K level.
kinderjane - Doing SASE was a great idea! But you probably would have spent less time retyping and posting here, if you know how many would respond!
Sally - Free time? what is that???
Kelly - Sharon's an NBCT - she can probably help with the math question!
Sharon - What's the question?
Kelly - Sharon - Melody has a literacy timeline that she's mailing to anyone who sends her a SASE....
moralyn - since I teach K, is that what my math topic would cover?
Sally - Okay Melody, is your address on e-mail? I haven't checked it in a week or two.
Sharon - Yeah! Melody! I saw on the list that you were doing that. How neat of you!
kinderjane - Sharon- I have one, too. On the math question, did you talk about the class you had this year, refering to specific children, or your classes in general?
Melody - Yes, address is on the list: Melody Spicer, 33 Cambridge Court, Coto de Caza, CA 92679
Sharon - In general mostly, However I think I gave examples where I named specific students.
Sharon - I think it's a good idea to connect to literature where it naturally fits, also.
Melody - Are we speaking of Kgn. math?
Kelly - Sharon - the earlier question dealt with topics.....and included decimals, multiplication, and division. I said I didn't think those were necessary to prepare......do you have any thoughts on that?
Kelly - The math quesiton deals with your grade level, am I right?
kinderjane - Yes, Kelly, each person's grade level.
Melody - Math at AC will be to develop some curriculum in say measurement, or number sense, or geometry....FOR YOUR GRADE LEVEL.
Sharon - I think that would all fit within numeration or operations. In the k-2 grades that would not be applicable to us. Write about what you do in your class.
kinderjane - Dana, are you back?
Sharon - Hi Dana. Saw your picture.
Dana (carbag) - Yes! Thank goodness - trying to read and "catch Up" on the chat!
Melody - Yes on the literature, and use parents and home too
moralyn - that makes good sense, so I would not have to consult with another grade level math teacher
Donna - Thanks for the math input...its beginning to make more sense now for me too!
Sally - Melody, use parents and home in all the questions?
Melody - Math level is for YOUR grade level, so you just need to know your stuff that you teach.
Dana (carbag) - Hi Sharon! My daughther posted my pic from school this yr.
Sharon - No, moralyn...just what you do in your class. Although you do have to know what they come to you knowing. Might help to talk to the teacher in a grade level below you.
Kelly - Sally - yes, I think parents/home is a BIGGIE with nbpts!
Melody - Well, in developing curriculum you would. The other exercises are: Analyzing Children's Work, Children's Play, Using Assessment
Melody - See, as a banker, I got hung up last year by focusing ONLY on math, science, play, and reading (not even ALL aspects of literacy!) You must ANSWER THE QUESTION, using the subject matter as a vehicle
Dana (carbag) - Not to change the subject, but kelly I wanted to reach into your picture and give you a big hug when I saw you! Lara has offered to put pictures in our file for those who don't have a scanner or know how to put pictures. They can snail mail a pic. to us and she will post them. Jane, do you want her to post your pic. you sent me?
kinderjane - Yes! Dana! Do you still have it? That was my school pic. this year, too.
Kelly - Dana - that would be GREAT if Lara would do that for us!
Dana (carbag) - Of course Jane! It is over my computer! LOL really - it is!
Sharon - Dana, is your snail mail listed on OneList?
Dana (carbag) - It was her idea - I told her I would let ya'll know
moralyn - ok, I understand now. does this hold true for all activities, ie. science, art, language...?? (grade level I teach)
Sally - Where are the pictures being posted? (I guess I should have caught up on my e-mail before I chatted today
Dana (carbag) - No - I will post it!
kinderjane - Lara needs to be an honorary member of this ring. Ya'll, she is just like Dana. Sweet as can be! We chat on instant message like old friends!
Dana (carbag) - Sally in the files Kelly set up for us! on Onelist
Dana (carbag) - I may post Lara's picture on the ring! If it wouldn't offend anyone - I am proud of her! LOL
Melody - Moralyn, only the AC differentiates the grade levels for the exercises: Play is PK, literacy is 2nd grade, science is 1st grade and math is whatever YOUR particular grade level is.
Sally - Holy cow, what has been going on on the list, miss two weeks and you guys are into many different things!
kinderjane - Melody - which areas are you retaking this year.
Dana (carbag) - Thanks Jane for the compliment we have a mutual admiration society!
Kelly - Moralyn - NO...the literacy question is a second grade student - the science is on first grade - the play is pre-school...and math is your own grade. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on those....
Kelly - Sally - there's a WHOLE bunch out there for you! Files for everything. Just go to the onelist page and click on the "Files' option on the left.
Dana (carbag) - You are correct, Kelly!
Kelly - Dana - I think you should post Lara's picture! Can she put it next to yours?....of else just by herself!
Sally - Kelly, I need to go to the onelist web site?
kinderjane - Kelly- How could you be wrong? I don't think we'll ever forget. Even when we have passed all areas, we will be mentoring new candidates and refreshing ourselves every year.
Melody - Janie, I'm redoing at AC: Using Assessment Info (literacy) and Analyzing Children's Work Samples (science)
Kelly - Sallyl - yes.....and check out all the stuff posted under that Files option. There's all sorts of help for the AC - portfolios....and all kinds of other "stuff"....including a newly begun section on pictures of us! :)
Sally - Kelly, how cool!!!
moralyn - Kelly I will check your files on onelist for more details on lit. and science.
Melody - Kelly, you are right on, as usual!!
Kelly - There's great stuff there. I can say that because all I did was save it! Everybody else posted it! :)
kinderjane - Melody- when do you go? Do you feel more prepared?
moralyn - I hate to go, but have an appointment, thank goodness for the archives. gotta run. love to all and see ya!!!!
kinderjane - Or did you say you have already been? Maybe I need to take notes and keep them handy like on prompts at AC. Would be good practice! :-)
Kelly - Moralyn - see you later!
Melody - I go to AC on Flag Day, June 14. Yes, I feel TONS more prepared this year, mostly due to this ring and partly due to the experience fact that I "already done it."
Dana (carbag) - if you send more than one picture i can scan them all together and post them under one file
Sally - Kelly, where did you get the info to put in the files? From e-mails?
kinderjane - Bye Moralyn! Consider buying that book!
Dana (carbag) - this is Lara by the way
Sally - Melody, my AC date is the 14th too and I am not prepared yet, yikes!
Melody - I never said I was prepared!! :-) Mostly scared!! I've done a lot of reading; need to buckle down and condense notes.
Kelly - Hi Lara! Thanks for the pictures! :)
Dana (carbag) - oh no problem =)
Kelly - Sally - I keep most of the meat of messages....sorted into files for each entry for the portfolio and each exercise at the AC.....and then just some general "stuff"! I just figured out how to post them there instead of me sending them out to people as they requested information!
Melody - Dana, Lara, carbag, babybag: Thanks! We love you! I'll be sending pics too!
Dana (carbag) - ok that's fine
Dana (carbag) - i can scan and send them to you also
Melody - Kelly, remember that Technology Portfolio Virginia had to do? I bet you could pass that too!
Dana (carbag) - via email
Dana (carbag) - ok here is mom again
Dana (carbag) - oops sorry about that messed up hehe
Sally - How old is Lara?
Dana (carbag) - Me again - babybag has gone to make another phone call!
Melody - I swear, as soon as I HAVE TIME (ahem!) I am going to learn how to do all sorts of spiffy things on the computer, like that Powerpoint thing they were talking about a few weeks ago!
Dana (carbag) - Lara is 18 she just graduated from HS
Kelly - Melody - I doubt it! But I learn new things all the time! I'm really a dinosaur. I'm taking some classes this summer to get more expert at things!
Sharon - Not me Melody....I'm lost in the fifties.
Sally - Wow, congratulations to her! Sounds like she is a help to you.
Kelly - Melody - I'm taking Powerpoint this summer! And a class called "Internet in the classroom". Supposedly we'll all be hooked up to the internet next year....I doubt it, though!
Kelly - Sally - Dana SHOULD be proud of Lara - she graduated with all kinds of honors! :)
Melody - Speaking of dinosaurs, I just want to clarify: does LOL mean Lots of Love, and does BTW mean By The Way (or bacon, tomato on white....)???
Sally - LOL means laugh out loud. I couldn't figure that out for the longest time either
Melody - Sally, where are you from? What grade?
kinderjane - I had to ask, too, Melody!
Sally - I'm in central Ohio and I teach kindergarten.
Melody - LOL! Oh, I thought :-) was similiar to that! How do you abbreviate For Crying Out Loud?
Melody - Sally, do you feel prepared for the AC, especially the 1st and 2nd grade materials?
Sally - I'm thinking of applying for a special needs pre-school job. anyone familiar with that area? I am certified k-12 spec. ed. but not pre.
Melody - Sharon, what about you?
kinderjane - Sally- my Master's is in Early Childhood/Special Ed.
Melody - I'm Pre-K but not special needs.
Sharon - I'm from Mississippi and teach 1st.
Sally - Melody, I am embarassed to say I haven't started preparing for AC except to pull info off the e-mail ring and gather materials on play. I know I will panic starting tomorrow.
Kelly - Sally - Wendy from Florida teaches that....
kinderjane - I use my ec/sped training every day, but I do not want to leave kindergarten for a special-ed class. I have plentyof sp/ed kids each year! I LOVE KINDERARTEN!
Sally - Kelly, I thought she did. I will "talk" to her. Kinderjane, did you ever teach spec. pre-k?
Melody - Sally, it will all fall together! Pulling material off this ring is an essential part of your studying. Don't think it is goofing off or wasting time!
Sally - Melody, thank you very much for saying that. I love reading e-mail and tried to convince myself that it was a worthwhile way to study!
Melody - I always picture a funnel in my mind when I try to focus on the AC exercises. ALL MY TONS OF NOTES and all the great books I've read get filtered, filtered, filtered down to a short, sweet, ORGANIZED folder of precise notes
kinderjane - Melody- I hope it will all fall together for me. I've done some preparation for math, a little reading for play and lit. Almost nothing yet on science.
kinderjane - hey Terri!
Terri - hi everyone
Kelly - Hi Terri - how are you?
Terri - any special topic today?
Terri - I'm fine, just had a great garage sale hunt
Sally - KJ, how many course was it to certify spec. pre-K?
Kelly - Hi Kim......how are you? No Terri, we're just talking about everything...mainly the AC....
kinderjane - Melody-when you say short, sweet, organized, about how many pages did you end up with?
Terri - spent about $20, and got a huge box of lincoln logs, a floor puzzle, several books, a gallon size ziploc bag of mag. letters, and geez...I know there was more than that!
Melody - Sally, I firmly believe that! And talking to other candidates/NB teachers is a real gold nugget. All this time is so valuable.
Terri - what's AC?
kim - I am a specil needs preschool teacher. It took me two years to add my EEH.
Sally - Kim, TWO YEARS!!! I really didn't want to go back and do that much school!
Melody - Jane, et al, those "short, sweet precise notes" are still midway in the funnel! Will be happy to share when I get there!
Sally - Melody--LOL!
Sharon - Dana, Did you think to tell your teaching buddies hello for me?
Kelly - Terri - we're involved in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards - the Early Childhood/Generalist area.....this is a meeting for that....
Terri - oh, didn't realize. thanks
Kelly - Terri - the "AC" is a the last part of the certification requirements....
kim - I went to University od Dayton. I needed some special education courses, if you have those it shouldn't take as long. Preschool is a great field!
Kelly - Terri - I love your "finds" at the garage sales though! :)
Melody - Jane, we need to put our heads together re: science! Do you have that wonderful book, Do What Scientists Do?
Sally - Kim are you from Dayton area?
kinderjane - Sally- It was my whole masters- 39 hours! I got in a special program called "Pre-hand" (preschool handicapped). I went to a topknotch and expensive university, but the Gov't. paid 2/3 because they wanted teachers to have this training. Some classes were free because of other grants. I could not have afforded it on my own. My focus area was EH. Do I ever use that training!
Dana (carbag) - Yes, Sharon! They said to tell you Hi, too. We are meeting Mon. or Tues. to work on AC notes and study/share what we have worked up!
kim - No, I drove there because it was the closest university with the courses when I needeed them.
Sally - Melody, I wish I had that book.
Dana (carbag) - Melody, I would love to share notes, too!
Melody - I learned something new from that science book just this morning over a cup of coffee.
Sally - Kim, are you in Ohio? I live by Columbus.
kinderjane - Yes, Melody! We do need to put our heads together on science. I have the book AND plans to reread it! It is on the long "to do" list.
Kelly - Doing What Scientists Do is a book that's on my list to buy this summer! (I have to space out my book buys.....I spend a fortune on them!)
Melody - When my husband is around, I try to keep the studying light. So I was just scanning through the science book.
Kelly - Melody - isn't this your one year anniversary time?? :)
Dana (carbag) - I ordered the science textbook Cheryl Lipsey posted on the ring - it is fantastic - goes exactly along with our science strands. I will use it to teach next year after preping for AC with it
Sharon - Kelly, In Mississippi teachers get EEF money to spend in their classroom. I use a portion of that each year for professional books/and or membership in IRA or NCTM.
Melody - Anyway, the author, who sounds like an EXCELLENT teacher, gave scenarios from a classroom of 5-6 year olds, then 7-8-9 year olds. She was getting them to understand OBSERVATION, the number one scientific inquiry skill, right?
Sally - Dana, what is the name of it?
Dana (carbag) - Sharon, I never tho't to use mine for that - I usually use the money to buy children's books and replenish manipulatives!
kinderjane - My husband is a freelance writer/photographer (all things wild an wonderful. He loves to be in the woods.) He is going on a two day trip this week. I have my math outlines printed and a stack of books ready. I am going with him, but work on this!
Sharon - Dana, How much are the teachers alloted in your school?
Kelly - In Missouri we get nothing! We teachers supply everything except the most basic of texts. I don't even get pencils supplied for my kids!
Melody - You can tell the author/teacher was VERY aware of age appropriateness. She knows little ones are egocentric, and that being objective is hard. She guided the questioning until the children could take away some of the subjectivity and be a little more objective (scientific) in their observations.
kinderjane - Hey Maggie!
Kelly - Hi Maggie - how are you?
Kelly - Melody - are you talking about Doing What Scientists Do?
Dana (carbag) - Sharon we get about $225./yr
Sally - KJ, where did you get math outlines? Did you make them up?
Sharon - Kelly, Can you charge a classroom supply fee?
Melody - Yeah, I'm still gabbing about that wonderful book about scientists! And yes, it IS my one year anniversary time! Thanks for remembering.....next Friday, June 9.
Kelly - Sharon - NO - we can't charge anything. Even for field trips, we have to ask for a "donation" - some pay, some don't. I make up the difference usually. But I've had GREAT parents this year who have offered to supply many things!
Sally - Kelly, you get NO classroom money to order new supplies? A full classroom gets about $500 in my school.
Sally - Kelly, you get NO classroom money to order new supplies? A full classroom gets about $500 in my school.
maggie - Good afternoon! I think I may be in the wrong place because I am a MC-Gen, however, I couldn't resist talking with some folks who know about this whole process....
Melody - Aren't math outlines from Serafin, and in the files?
kinderjane - Kelly- that is awful! I get several hundred dollars each year. I have also written three state teacher grants, $2,000 each. I got math stuff with one. Literacy stuff including big books and 6-packs of books with the other two grants.
Kelly - Sally - be happy! We get nothing! It's sad....and expensive! :)
Dana (carbag) - Sally, I had to go get the book from the stack by my bed! The name is SCIENCE EXPERIENCES FOR THE EARLY CHILHOOD YEARS An Integrated Approach ISBN # 0-13-099957-1
Kelly - Maggie - you're free to commiserate (is that the spelling?) with us! :)
Melody - Maggie, will you be going to the AC?
Kelly - Dana - Thanks - I've written it down and will add it to our bibliography! :)
Sally - Thanks Dana
Sharon - Kelly, Technically our classroom fee is also called a "donation" however most parents pay each year. We also get around $550 each year per classroom.
Kelly - Jane - I got a $1,000 grant last year for leveled texts for my kids. I'm writing another one this year hoping to get the same! :)
maggie - I did the AC last summer and received certification in November
Melody - Maggie, bless your heart! Hang in here, add your two cents! We need you!
Kelly - I get a math text, the district basal (McMillan/McGraw Hill - texts only, nothing else), and we can have some things printed in the district media center....that's it!
kinderjane - Sally - I am using Serafin's outlines. I did modify them just a bit.
Kelly - Maggie - congratulations!
Dana (carbag) - Congrats Maggie!
Kelly - Hi aggieb - how are you?
Sharon - Dana, Do you have a toll free order number for that?
maggie - Thank you....are you all going to the AC this summer or have you completed everything?
Dana (carbag) - Kelly, you need to move, huh?!
Kelly - Dana - no kidding! But I love my kids. It's my principal who would make me decide to move! :)
Sally - I spoke with my son's middle school teacher who is completing the process. It is interesting how her trials and tribulations and mine were so similar.
Kelly - Maggie - I'm a banker, but not redoing the AC.
Sally - Kelly, I would love to donate materials to you. What do you need?
maggie - I wish I had known about this site earlier....any of you going to the NEA-RA in Chicago in July?
kinderjane - We have 3 MC-Gen candidates at my school. I am the only ec-gen. It is nice to have others to talk to who understand the stress level, even if in different areas.
Melody - Can anyone here tell me how to find a kid's misconceptions about say, life science, if they draw a rough picture of a guinea pig?
Kelly - Sally - what a sweetheart! We need everything! But I collect everything....so I have about 800 books in my room....better selection than our school library! We really need more leveled texts, though....multiple copies. That's what I'm writing grants for. With Four Blocks, I don't need too much else.....I buy them those marble composition books each year.
Kelly - Maggie -I'm going to the RA! I'm from Missouri.....
Sally - Kelly, what about paint? construction paper? glue art supplies?
kinderjane - Time for my regular Sat. nite "date". Bye ya'll!
maggie - I would love to meet you! I'm from Indiana....Would you be willing to meet at the NBPTS exhibit on a certain day?
Dana (carbag) - Kelly, I will send you a copy of the contents for the science book - it has how to integrate math, music, literature (and book lists for each strand) art, play, creative movement, food experiences, promoting concept connections, and family and community support - covers everything we need to prepare for ac along with What Scientists Do - it covers everything! It has common misconceptions about the strand and lessons to teach the concepts ... now, I will shut up!
Sally - Is Four Blocks all day long? Bye KJ, "talk" to you later!
Melody - Bye, Jane, let's stay in close touch!
Sharon - Kinderjane, How DO you do that? My "date" is out on the lawn mower!
Kelly - Sally - I buy the paint. I"ve saved up construction paper over the years so I have more of a supply than my colleagues! My kids bring in glue....usually the families who will supply it will send in one for their child and an extra. That helps.
Kelly - Bye, Jane!
Kelly - Sally - Four Blocks is a framework for delivering literacy. Guided reading, self-selected reading, writing, and the "word" block (phonics)....it's wonderful. I love it.
Dana (carbag) - Bye Jane! Talk to you later!
Melody - Dana, your science book addresses misconceptions?
Sharon - Dana, Did you look to see if there was a phone number to order?
Kelly - Each block needs at least 30 minutes daily. Eats up most of my time....but I think that it's the most important thing I do with my first graders! They've thrived this year using that approach!
Sally - Kelly, I hope you at least take it off your taxes!
maggie - It's been nice visiting here today.....looking forward to returning....I don't have a Saturday "date" but I do need to make some phone calls...ttfn!
Sally - My district wants us to use that idea with kindergarten, but it would definitly take up my whole 2.5 hours. I am standing firm that my k's need more than just reading and writing.
Melody - Sally, maybe you could stagger the four slots and have, for example 1 and 3 on Mon and Wed, then 2 and 4 on Tue and Thurs??
Dana (carbag) - The web site is www.merrilleducation.com - I think I ordered mine at ecampus - I don't have a phone number. I am looking to double check about the misconceptions, Melody!
Kelly - Sally - there's a new Building Blocks (the K portion) book out....supposed to be really good. It shouldn't take up your whole time. They don't use all four blocks in K. You're right - you need lots of things! My kids get the others, too....but we spend at least 1/2 if not 2/3 of our day with reading related activities.....
Dana (carbag) - Bye maggie!
Melody - I agree Ks need time for other things, but you can incorporate and overlap lots of things.
kristie - I haven't been here in a while. This chat room got me really going to finish my portfolios. I hope you will have some advice for me now. My assessment center date is June 21. What are some of you all doing to prepare for this? Kristie
Kelly - Yes - any reading we do for science, math, social studies, etc. is considered part of our guided reading.
Sally - Melody, yes I have thought of that. Next year when I can concentrate on more than NB I will work on it.
Kelly - Kristie - are you on our list?
Melody - Kristie, you MUST check into our files!
kristie - Melody, How dod I do that?
Sally - I have to go. I hopefully will be here next week.
Melody - I'm so excited about NEXT YEAR....got a million things I want to do and only two hands!!
aggieb - hi, it's me again trying to figure this out
Melody - Kelly, want to explain to Kristie???
indianasharon - hello, are you all talking about the 4 blocks model? I hope to start it in the fall. I am going to a conference in July conducted by P.Cunningham.
Melody - Kristie, also check the Archives for this chat ring each Sat since last Nov.....?? is that when??
Kelly - Sure-Krisite - to go our onelist page and click on "Files" from the list of options on the left of the screen. There's a ton of info to help you there!
indianasharon - brb, i'm going to change my color...
Dana (carbag) - Melody, I don't see where it addresses misconceptions for each area, but it discusses naive misconceptions and how to deal with them to take the children beyond them
Julie - Hi Kelly! Finally I am home at 4:00-- usually I am playing the organ at church....
Dana in OK - Hi Girls! I haven't talked to you all in so long! How's it going? I can only stay a minute! Gotta go to a ballgame. What are we discussion? Love the pictures on the onelist
aggieb - I am plannig to apply for NBC in the fall , has anyone had the experience yet?
Melody - Two Danas here! Keep em straight!
Kelly - Hi Julie - and indianasharon.......
indianasharon - there, that's better :)
Kelly - addieg - we're all connected to it. Email me at lkelly46@cs.com and we'll get you connected! :)
indianasharon - Hi Kelly
Kelly - Hi OK Dana! Good to "see" you here!
indianasharon - Hey Aggie!
Dana (carbag) - Hi Dana! from Dana in Ms!
Melody - Kristie, and other new people, contact Kelly, our fearless leader, without whom we would all be floundering in the dark!
Dana in OK - Thanks! I've been lurking and not talking. I kind of took a mental break when sent in the port. Now I'm in high gear getting ready for AC!
Julie - The last two weeks were something else at school-- started losing and gaining kids to an from St. Louis and Chicago!
Dana in OK - HI! My Name sake
indianasharon - I have this week yet to go...aaarrrrgh
Dana (carbag) - aggieb, I am a current candidate prepping for the AC - you will learn so much here thanks to our "mom" Kelly1
kristie - Kelly, I think so. I never got the hang of the mail ring. I know I sound so stupid but I would post a question and never get any kind of response. I recently was so overwhelmed that I just deleted about 300 e-mails . That was enough to make me crazy in itself. Honestly I don't know what ring I'm on. I know I get messages from the EC/GEN one but can never figure out how to post. Kristie
Dana (carbag) - aggieb, I am a current candidate prepping for the AC - you will learn so much here thanks to our "mom" Kelly!
indianasharon - what is AC
Julie - It cooled off in Iowa after we got out-- we were still cleaning rooms so that was welcome
Kelly - I'm still in school, too....two more days with the kids! Julie - you have kids coming and going from St. Louis?
Melody - New people: Archives, Information Files, onelist.......three ESSENTIALS to help you pass NB and retain your sanity.....I think!
Kelly - indianasharon - it's the last leg for certification from National Boards
Dana in OK - Assessment Center
indianasharon - thanks Dana in OK
indianasharon - and Kelly, thanks
Kelly - AH - you're THAT Julie! From Iowa! How's it going?
Melody - Kristie, do not, I repeat, DO NOT feel stupid, and do not give up! People here will walk you thru step by step to explain procedures to you. You owe it to yourself to figure this puppy out.....well worth it!!
Dana in OK - It's this 8 hour test we take ast the end! YIKES! I'm busy trying to prepare for every science topic I can imagine. i saw someone mention misconceptions a minute ago. Are you talking about the ones from the listserve we got???
indianasharon - doorbell..bye all!
Julie - Yes, all year long! We are 2 hours or so from there. The last group in were 7 kids from 3 families brought here by one aunt! My child had Mom inprison, dad died, Gramma who cared for her had just died. She was almost 7 but had only been in school since January! She came in every morning, would see me, run the length of the hall (oops) and throw her arms around me. I really felt for her. If she stays next fall we have a lot of work to do!
Dana (carbag) - kristie, NEVER SAY YOU SOUND STUPID, okay?! Asking is how we all learn! One of the terrific things about our ring is that no one judges the other and we realize we all started at 0 (zero) knowledge about things in our lives! It had to be the other EC_Gen ring that didn't answer! This ring is FANTASTIC with quick responses!
aggieb - I have been reading the listserve from nbc and I get more and more confussed. I have ordered my standards and a video and try to read the messages. I also am reading the guide
Dana in OK - Aggieb - Sounds like a great start! We;ll all be glad to help.
Melody - Kristie, the other list is a posting. You do not get immediate answers like THIS one, which is a chat. The other one, people will read, and post an answer for you, usually several people will comment.
Kelly - aggieb - email me at lkelly46@cs.com - we'll get you the help you need!
Julie - I am waiting (again) and am out of school. I redid portfolio science and literacy and hope for the best-- they have to do well to get enough points. Had a ball doing science-- a trip to the pond and sorting the pond bottom in our water table!
Dana in OK - Kelly, is there anyway to put our biographical information on the onelist next to the pictures instead of mailing the bios around the country?
Kelly - Julie - how many points do you need?
aggieb - sure thing kelly, I will visit you there
Melody - agg, stick close to THIS group of people if you want real help. Confusion will clear away clouds, and sun will shine again!
Kelly - Dana - I'll try to figure that one out! I'm learning new things about that site every day!
Julie - 19 points.
Kelly - Julie - ME TOO! So we're both 93% of the way there! :)
Melody - Kristie, do you understand about the posting listserv? You ask, people answer later that day or evening, you must check your mail.
Dana (carbag) - aggieb, this listserve is not critical and picky like the nb teacher talk posting - you get support and answers here. Our mom, kelly, raised us right! LOL
Julie - Good way to look at it. I already have next year's plan ready if I don't get it-- re-take AC literacy, but I just thought I needed a summer break this year. Good thing, I now have 3 family surgeries to sit out at hospitals and home!
Melody - LOL--laugh out loud!
aggieb - I am real excited but get very skeptical because of lack of support here in NC
Dana in OK - I'm so excited to see pictures to go with faces and email names. I just wish we had the bio stuff right there.
Kelly - Julie - I plan to redo ac next year, too! I'm sorry to hear about the family surgeries! Hope all goes well.
Dana (carbag) - Kelly, it can be done! Type it up bio. send pictures and my dear daughter will scan it all together and post for us!
Kelly - aggieb- no support in NC? That's unusual. There's usually a ton of support there!
Melody - Hello Ms. Sinetag!
Sharon - aggieg, I thought NC gave lots of support to National Board candidates.
Dana in OK - so if I wanted to post picture and info I just type up what I wanted then scan it all together and upload that into a file???
Julie - Maybe the surgeries will force me to slow don for awhile. I am bringin all of my files from school and updating them with new materials in pretty colored cardboard files! Just can't waste time....
Dana (carbag) - Hi Nancy!
kristie - That's what I thought I was doing and never got responses. So I assumed that I was doing it wrong. I'm feeling in a real panic now just as I did when I was so unsure about the portfolio entries. I know we've all had this feeling. I just need to get a plan together and I'll feel better. Can anyone tell me again what steps exactly I need to take to be successful on this ring?
Kelly - Hi there Nancy! Thanks for your offer to translate the files for people! I have no idea how to do that!! Can you do it for PC users, also? Some are getting computer jibberish when they try to access the files!
Melody - agg- lots of people on this list have little/no support from local people. Stay here. We are all really close, you will see! The miles seem to disappear. You feel like your "friends" are just a click away!!
Kelly - Kristie - email me at lkelly46@cs.com and I'll get you fixed up!
sinetag - hello to everyone
Julie - sometimes you get response on the list, and other times you need to repeat yourself or re-word... so many people talking about so many topics.
aggieb - sorry, I am just rural NC and right now i have heard of one workshop that filled immediately. I thought my county bd. of ed would offer suport persons, we do get two days off and they pay for it all
sinetag - anything you want translated on the computer, just send it my way with specs and which format you want and I'll do it
Melody - Kristie, be calm! We'll help!
Dana (carbag) - Kelly, since aol instant messanger is free more of us could get on it, too. It so much easier to chat on
Sharon - Does anybody chat during the week anymore?
Kelly - Dana MS - lots of people have trouble getting onto AOL though. We have the onelist chatroom and the rooms here at teachers.net.........they should be enough, don't you think?
Melody - Kristie, write to Kelly now. On the left side of your screen now, where it says Send To: Room, scroll down, look for Kelly's name, click there. That way you can send her a personal message and include your email address so we don't lose tabs on you.
Dana in OK - I haven't had time and school's only been out a week. Now I'm ready to go again.
Kelly - Sharon - we've had a few people in there this week. I'll post a reminder and we'll see. Maybe over the summer people will have more time to spend with that!
Dana (carbag) - You are right Kelly!
Julie - Kelly-- I got an invitation to be on an advisory board for Iowa Ed Dept. that includes a list-serve. Voices from the classroom. I was so proud to already be on this one and know what they were talking about!
Sharon - Good! There's never anybody there when I check.
Kelly - Julie - good for you! Do it! You'd be great on it!
Kelly - Sharon - around 10 p.m. Eastern time........
Dana in OK - Gotta run! Make sandwiches before the t-ball game! Hope I get to talk again soon! Good luck all!
Melody - So, Kelly, are you saying that nightly, at 10 Eastern, there is a chat at teachers dot net? In a meeting room or a chat room?
Dana (carbag) - Dana in Ok send your bio. and pictures you want in your file and send to Dana Baggett 207 Lois Lane - Booneville, MS 38829. My daughter will scan it all together and post in a file under your name! She has offered to do this for everyone on the ring - it can take the place of sending a box from place to place!
Melody - Bye Dana in OK!
Julie - Who is the author of "Morning Meeting" book? Now I have time to read it!
Kelly - Melody - the 10 p.m chat is on our onelist site....in that chatroom.
Dana (carbag) - 10pm est
Kelly - Julie - you can order Morning Meeting at www.responsiveclassroom.org.....I think the author is Roxanne Kriete.......it's a great book......quick read with good helpful useful ideas!
sinetag - I just uploaded my picture - be kind.
Melody - The Morning Meeting, by Roxann Kriete, ISBN 1-892989-00-X, 171 pages, Strategies for Teachers Series
Dana (carbag) - Isn't it 9pm central, Kelly? (trying to save missing each other!)
Kelly - Sinetag - the one that Lori from MN put up of me includes all my chins! Yours will be beautiful next to that! :)
Kelly - Yes - 10 p.m . Eastern, 9 Central.....7 Pacific......
sinetag - Kelly, don't think I didn't pick a 7 year old picture on purpose, because I did!
Dana (carbag) - WE better be kind! My picture is in there, too, now!
Melody - Julie, do be sure to read M.M. book. It is so enjoyable, and full of ideas you can use/adapt to your classroom!
sinetag - I thought both of your pictures were great
Kelly - sinetag - I should post one from my flower child days! :).....skinny, long blond hair.....bandana.......:)
sinetag - I almost posted one from when I was 26 years old, that's how desperate I am
Dana (carbag) - I am reading Morning Meeting for PLEASURE reading among my AC necessity reading! LOL
Melody - Kelly, remember Joanne Hayden's posting of 1970 and 2000? It was funny!
Dana (carbag) - Kelly, send it so lara can post it! It will be fun!
Julie - This year I blew up on the computer a school pic of me and put it in place of the bus driver on a huge cardboard shelf I scanvenged from KMart. The hand s on the wheel were still the original truck driver hands, so it was hysterical. I put the kids faces in all the windows. When it fell apart at the end of a long year, I pushed it out into the hall, and the first graders thought it was really being driven!
Melody - Julie, cute bus idea!
Dana (carbag) - Cute idea, Julie! Teachers are so creative!
Kelly - Melody - yes! :)
Julie - The school bus shell of it died, but the 4 yellow cardboard shelves are still great. Amazing what you can find. I even got the KMart guy to drive it over to school for me!
Dana (carbag) - Nancy, I was brave and put this year's school picture!
Kelly - Well, folks, I need to get going. I'll see you all on the ring! :) Take care.....
Dana (carbag) - Julie, you must be quite a charmer!
Dana (carbag) - Bye ya kelly!
sinetag - In my school picture this year I'm so orange you'd think I had hepatitis
Sharon - Time for me to go too. I have reading to do for a class I'm taking.
sinetag - In my school picture this year I'm so orange you'd think I had hepatitis
kristie - Bye! Hopefully, Ill figure this ring thing out.
Dana (carbag) - Ugh - shoot the photographer!
Melody - Sinetag/Nancy, which science books would you say were most beneficial, if a person could only have two or three?
sinetag - for the AC or in general?
Dana (carbag) - kristie, hang on with us! It will come natural with you soon!
Julie - Kristie-- when you send a message to a ring, does it then appear on the ring for you? Mine does.
Melody - for the AC, especially one that addressed misconceptions and dealt with a teacher analyzing ch's work
Julie - I think I am more persistand than charming at 51!
sinetag - I just got home from preparing 37 Exceptional Needs and English as a New Language candidates for the AC
sinetag - Well I think Benchmarks for Science Literacy is a tremendous resource, but it does not specifically address misconceptions
Melody - Nancy, did they haveto do science too?
kristie - Julie, Yes I have seen it but someone told me they hadn't seen it and I got no response.
sinetag - The English as a New Language candidates get to choose between 2 paths for the AC and if they choose Path A then they do the regular EC/GEN and MC/GEN exercises, including science
sinetag - Benchmarks is available online
Julie - I used a curriculum library's books on as many science topics as i could find-- like AIMS books. Just a short book on each topic-- and I was lucky to have had the right topic as one of them.
Dana (carbag) - Nancy, have you heard from serafin lately? She hasn't posted in ages. I have tried to call her and get the answering machine.
Melody - I'm thinking about the book Dana recommended. Or maybe if I filter thru all my science books, I can figure out what is age appropriate, what errors in thinking ch at 1st grade age would have, etc.
sinetag - I prefer science resouces which lay out science content according to developmentally appropriate practice rather than books which specifically list misconceptions - just works better for me that way - I'm a whole to part person
sinetag - I prefer science resouces which lay out science content according to developmentally appropriate practice rather than books which specifically list misconceptions - just works better for me that way - I'm a whole to part person
sinetag - sorry for the double post
sinetag - sorry for the double post
sinetag - I have not seen serafin for awhile
Melody - That's OK. That's OK.
Dana (carbag) - Melody, that book and Doing What Scientists Do cover it all along with the list of common misconceptions posted on the ring! The textbook I posted is very thorough!
sinetag - I know she is not offtrack because she is Concept 6 A Track so her vacation doesn't start until July 1
sinetag - if you really want to contact her you could send a fax to her school - she teaches at Straithern Elementary in North Hollywood
Melody - I guess I'm a little "stuck" if, for example, a child drew a picture of something, what info would that give me as the teacher about what that child knew/did not know/had wrong ideas about?
connie fl - Hi I am new and I am just starting the process. What can I do this summer while I wait for my box?
Dana (carbag) - I guess she is extra busy. I was just hoping she is okay.
sinetag - well it's a busy time of the year and our district is in a state of extra turmoil this year
sinetag - we have an NBCT Committee Meeting in a week and a half so maybe she'll come to that
Melody - Dana, thanks a million for the book rec! Will try to locate it!!
Dana (carbag) - Connie fl, read the EC_Gen list faithfully - start working on 5 and 6 in the portfolio and read up on the files Kelly posted for us -
Melody - Nancy, are there any other support/AC group meetings in Los Angeles before June 14?
Dana (carbag) - Melody, I really think you will be pleased with it
Julie - Go through your professional activities for documentation-- like pictures in the newspaper of an anctivity you are doing in the classroom, or certificates for awards etc. You will need to have them for documentation of professional collaboration that helped improve student learning in your classroom. Also think of any parent, family, activities that you do.
Melody - Connie, you can begin on Entry 5 and 6
Melody - Connie, you may go back 5 years when looking for your accomplishments.
Dana (carbag) - This is what the table of contents looks like.
sinetag - Melody: the AC preparation meetings for this year's candidates are finished. All that is left are some small group meetings with their facilitators. The Support Network is mostly working on Orientations for candidates for next year right now.
Dana (carbag) - opps - I'll try again!
Dana (carbag) - This is what the table of contents looks like. I have not personally seen
Julie - Connie, did we scare you off already? don't get too excited-- many of us didn't start unitl december.
Dana (carbag) - It isn't working! I will send it to you Melody!
sinetag - Try end of January for me
connie fl - Wow, thanks this is great ! How do I find what Kelly posted?
Melody - Thanks, Dana in MS!
Dana (carbag) - So welcomed!
Melody - Nancy, I thought so. No problem.....I know what I need to do.....just need to do it!!
sinetag - are you lausd?
Dana (carbag) - Me too, Melody!
Melody - Nancy, yes, and UTLA too!
sinetag - naturally!
sinetag - which school?
Julie - I have to go-- our neighbors acrosss the street are from India, and are having an evening under the stars party tonight. The invitation had a picture of the TajMahal (sp?) so you never know what you might be doing here in Iowa! bye
connie fl - WHat is lausd?
Melody - Harrison School in East Los Angeles, near County General Hospital
sinetag - Los Angeles Unified School District
sinetag - oh that's right
Julie - I asked that oo when I started!
sinetag - Are you ready to go on strike?
Dana (carbag) - Connie, what is your email address?
Mauri - Julie ... What part of Iowa? I'll be in SE MN mid June through August.
Melody - LAUSD is Los Angeles Unified School District, or All Loused Up!
sinetag - aka The Happiest Place on Earth
connie fl - conniejungovich@hotmail. com
Julie - SE Iowa, Burlington on the Mississippi River.
Melody - Strike? Did someone say strike? My head in a hole!
sinetag - yes my dear that was me talking, STRIKE
Julie - we can't strike in Iowa...
sinetag - sorry to hear it
Dana (carbag) - I will send you how to get the files, okay?!
connie fl - Not in Fl either
Melody - If those wienies don't give us a raise, I guess we will strike!!
connie fl - Thanks Dana
Melody - Connie, you'll LOVE all the info you will get!
Julie - They talk so much about increasing teacher pay but when they realize it costs money they sure back down!
connie fl - I am a slow typist
sinetag - hey I'm already there
Mauri - Julie, I teach 3rd in CA & spend the summer in MN ... I'm near Rochester (mayo Clinic).
sinetag - where in California?
Melody - What do teachers in other state do when they have grievances???
sinetag - ask nicely
Julie - I am heading up to Mason city next week to stay with my dad after surgery. That isn't far from Rochester. Hopefully I won't end up there with him!
Mauri - Yucca Valley ..Up the hill from Palm Springs.
sinetag - i go to palm springs every summer with the union
connie fl - I will teach first next year. I taught K-1 this year. It was fun.
Melody - Pretty Please? Did someone ask for a pay raise with a Pretty Please? (Maybe we could try that!!)
sinetag - I'm afraid a strike is likely this time - did you walk in 1989?
Mauri - Summer in Palm Springs ... yikes! You must be a sun Worshiper
sinetag - no, just appreciate a trip on the union's dime
Melody - I had left the district from 1985-1990 to live in Europe. But I head plenty from friends!
sinetag - it was actually a great experience in many ways
sinetag - where were you in europe?
Melody - Mauri, there is another teacher on this ring who lives in Yucca Valley. Isn't it Michelle?
connie fl - Try coming to Orlando. I teach in Melbourne about an hour away
Dana (carbag) - In MS can't strike either - we are at their mercy and they know it!
Mauri - Yes, Michelle & Kiela
Melody - I lived in Paris for two years, and another year in a VAN.......:-)
Dana (carbag) - Hey Connie my daughter is going to college in Tampa (Temple Terrace area) in August!
connie fl - I went to USM for my masters. I loved Hattiesburg.
sinetag - je suis diplomé en français
Dana (carbag) - Wow Melody, is your hubby in the service, how'd you get there?
Melody - The thought of a strike is obviously distasteful, but I always support the union. They did wonders for me back in the 70's as a new teacher.
Dana (carbag) - Connie I am in the NE corner of Mississippi
connie fl - She will like Tampa. She is going to USF?
sinetag - maestros unidos jamás serán vencidos
Dana (carbag) - No a small private college Florida College
sinetag - We are incredibly fortunate to be represented by UTLA
Dana (carbag) - She may finish at USF - who knows?!!
Dana (carbag) - I would love to go to the NB meeting in October in Orlando!
Melody - Nancy, hablas espanol tambien?? That's true.....United We Stand, Divided We Fall.......
sinetag - Harrison was a Phase I LEARN School - who's your Lead Teacher?
sinetag - Dana, I'm going
connie fl - Now that I know about this group I will be back I have to go
Dana (carbag) - Mauri, are you a candidate or wantabe candidate? or nbct?
Dana (carbag) - We are here at 3pm central every saturday, connie!
Melody - Nancy, we had a BIG problem about Lead Teacher this past year. It was Irma Torres, now it is Ann Chambers.
Dana (carbag) - Nancy, I would love to meet you!
sinetag - sî claro que hablo español - hasta que el pendejo Ron Unz se puso en medio de lo que no está su negocio, enseñaba clases de lenguaje primario
Mauri - Dana, I have completed my portfolio & will take the AC in MN on June 29
sinetag - I'll be there Dana
Dana (carbag) - NO FAIR NANCY!
sinetag - Melody, I can't remember who your lead teacher was when you started with LEARN - was it a man?
sinetag - Dana, you can go too if you like
Melody - Amiga, Nancy, si, es un #$%^&* el ese!!
Dana (carbag) - Good luck Mauri. I take the AC on July 11 - I wanted plenty of time to prepare!
Melody - Nancy, it was Marguerite Murphy, but now she is our AP
Dana (carbag) - No, I mean no fair speaking in spanish - all of us aren't bilingual or however you spell it! LOL
sinetag - melody, you're not kidding - I consider what has happened to primary language instruction in California to be nothing less than ethnic cleansing
Mauri - Thanks Dana ... Good Luck back at 'ya!
sinetag - sorry dana, i was speaking of Ron Unz in unprintable language
Dana (carbag) - Thanks do you read the EC_GEN list posts?
sinetag - Dana: me?
Melody - Nancy, do you receive a bilingual differential? Bonus?
Dana (carbag) - I forgive you Nancy - I probably don't need to learn those spanish words even if I do learn to speak spanish! Ha
Mauri - Yes, I'm a member .. just quiet until now. the one list has been very helpful. "Gracias" :-)
sinetag - I have always received the bilingual differential but now that the contract has expired I doubt it will continue for Model B teachers
Dana (carbag) - You deserve big bucks nancy!
sinetag - that's what i keep tellin em
Dana (carbag) - Mauri, you will have to speak up more often! You have a lot to offer!
Melody - Dana, Nancy and I were being silly speaking in Spanish! We teach in the same district, but do not know each other. Thank goodness, as she said, we have a strong union. The prez of the union came to a meeting last year for NB candidates and I got to meet him. I was so impressed that on a Friday, at 5:00, and after he had been to four other meetings that day, we came to our little get together.
sinetag - I lost my bilingual differential and gained my NB differential and did a little better than break even
sinetag - which meeting was that?
Dana (carbag) - That's not fair at all Nancy! Melody, I was just kidding about ya'll speaking in spanish not being fair - my joker side!
Melody - Model B teachers still need to "clarify" in Spanish if those students don't understand, right? 90% of instruction in English, 10% in Spanish, right?
sinetag - something like that
sinetag - dana, are you going to orlando in october?
Dana (carbag) - I hope to! and skip after the meeting on over to Tampa to see my Lara!
sinetag - the registration information just came out
Melody - Nancy, State Farm Ins. had a meeting at the Junior Achievement Center near Forest Lawn for the recipients of their awards. They paid my $2000 application fee to NBPTS
Dana (carbag) - I have a lot of relatives in Tampa, who would transport me to see her!
Dana (carbag) - Oh, where can I get it?
sinetag - I was supposed to be at that meeting but I had the flu.
sinetag - Dana, it is downloadable from the nbpts home page
Dana (carbag) - My cousins got married at Forest Lawn and my grandad is buried there - at the feet of Marilyn Monroe!
Dana (carbag) - Thanks Nancy, I will check it out. I wonder if Mary is going, too.
sinetag - Marilyn Monroe is buried at Westwood Memorial Park, it your granddad there?
sinetag - I don't know is Mary is going this year or not
Melody - Oh, Dana, the church at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, is beautiful! I've got lots of relatives buried there too! There are several cementaries of Forest Lawn in different parts of the county........
sinetag - Last week The Support Network had visitors from Atlanta and from NBPTS, and I was talking to Ann Harman (Director of Research and Evaluation for NBPTS) about the Orlando meeting and she said that the meeting would be in Washington DC again in October 2001
Dana (carbag) - It is inside the walls - she is in the wall isn't she? There is a huge mural painted there - I havent been there since I was a teenager - Maybe it was some other famous actress! it has been over 30 yrs ago!
sinetag - Marilyn Monroe is in a wall crypt but there is no mural - the cemetary where she's buried is tiny - it's behind a bank! Natalie Wood is there too and several other celebs
Dana (carbag) - My uncle was a dentist - now retired in Tampa. But both of his daughters had huge weddings at one of the forest Lawns - one with that huge mural - or do they all have one of those???
sinetag - I think the Forest Lawn in Glendale may have a big mural
Melody - Dana, the Hollywood Hills Forest Lawn has a huge mosaic of the Last Supper
sinetag - Forest Lawn is kind of like Disneyland out here - it's used for all sorts of purposes in addition to the usual fare
Dana (carbag) - Must have been someone else! it is a huge cemetary - folks in the walls - bury the folks four deep - weird - don't do that back here. More room I guess!
Dana (carbag) - Melody! That's it!
sinetag - Dana, I need your opinion about something
Dana (carbag) - What's that Nancy?
sinetag - You've put up with me on this list for awhile.. you've even talked to me on the phone..
Melody - I don't recall those walls. I think Glendale or some other one has lots of crypts......
sinetag - Do you find me "dictatorial, authoritative, and contradictory" in my approach to helping candidates?
Dana (carbag) - Yes???
Dana (carbag) - NO!
Melody - And I was SUPPOSE to call Nancy on the phone.....just been so busy!
Melody - Nancy, have you been accused or something?
Dana (carbag) - I find you so knowledgeable I get lost sometimes, but you have tried to be nothing but helpful!
Melody - I think if you know your subject, you can be affirmative about it and confident.
sinetag - Because I am on several NB lists, and the moderator one of the smaller (70 members) mc/gen ones ( to which I post very rarely) sent me an email and characterized my contributions that way
Melody - Nancy, I think some people have NO idea of what this process entails and they don't realize how precise we really must be!!
sinetag - she said I was the most self-aggrandizing, egotistical person she had ever encountered on a list and then bounced me from the list
Dana (carbag) - I refer others to you every week! I hope you don't mind! You "know your stuff" and there is nothing offensive about that!
sinetag - this person is an nbct
Dana (carbag) - Sounds like SHE has a problem!
Melody - Nancy, blow them off! It's just like those picky people who talk about misspelling a word or using incorrect punctuation when we are communicating on this ring!
sinetag - i guess, it just played into all of my paranoia about not being liked by people and really upset me
Melody - How could she bounce you from the list?
sinetag - she is the moderator
Dana (carbag) - Too bad people with ego problems become NBCT s I am speaking of whoever "bounced" you - it was her loss!
Melody - Hey, people here want help. They ask for advice. They want to know "if a spade is a spade."
sinetag - well, thank you both for your opinions, I don't mean to air dirty laundry in public but I just wanted an outside opinion
Mauri - Hey all .. a question. I may be a combo, 2/3 next year. I would like to integrate the curriculum instead of 1/2 2nd & 1/2 3rd. I know I'll be going against the tide on this one at my site. Any thoughts?
sinetag - go for it
sinetag - treat it as a multiage class instead of a split grade
Melody - Nancy, your science info is INVALUABLE, and your advice has always been direct, right on, and specific. Personally, I applaud you!
sinetag - you're sweet - thank you
Dana (carbag) - Gads, you are so generous with your help - offering to "translate" files - you work your butt off (excuse me) sharing your knowledge without compensation - just from the goodness of your heart! Let me ring her neck for you!
sinetag - be my guest!
sinetag - maybe she'll come to orlando (she lives in florida) and we can ambush her
Dana (carbag) - That would hurt me too, Nancy!
sinetag - you know, the orlando meeting is about 3 weeks before you get your results
Dana (carbag) - Point me in her direction!
Melody - Nancy, I'm not being fluffy! Some people are just jerks, you know that. You have a lot to offer and I feel sorry for the people who are not going to gain from your expertise because of a thoughtless person!
sinetag - let's do it!
Dana (carbag) - YOU KNOW KELLY BRAGS ON YOU ALL THE TIME, TOO!
Melody - Mauri, yes!! We are here!
Melody - Your class next year has lots of possibilities and fun stuff you can do creatively.
Mauri - That's my plan. This year in 3rd I had an ability range of 1st through 6th (gifted). I feel all classes are multigrades .. just not on paper. I trat all my kids as "gifted" & look for their "gift".
Dana (carbag) - Sorry, Mauri, got my dander stirred up there a bit about someone bouncing Nancy!
sinetag - I think it upset me because I am paranoid about being seen as arrogant or know-it-all because I have strong opinions and absolutely no compunctions about speak up
sinetag - Mauri, I taught multiage (7-10 years) for 6 years - it's wonderful
Melody - Society has always
Melody - As I was saying, society has always thrown stones when afraid, Nancy. I know it hurts, but muster up!! That fool has cut off her nose to spite her face!
sinetag - you're already mustered me up - thanks!
Melody - Mauri, what ideas are up your sleeve?
sinetag - okay, on to a new topic
Melody - Nancy, know what you know, and be confident. There is a difference between arrogant and "truly knowing" Be at peace with yourself. There was some message in that crazy encounter for you to learn, possibly to strengthen your conviction in yourself. If you are good, you are good. Jealous and petty people will ALWAYS try to bring you down.
Melody - Mauri, how will you incorporate cross curriculum subjects into your learning topics?
Mauri - This year for my SS entry we tracked the Iditarod Dog Sled raises on the internet & raised rainbow trout for science (environmental awareness & water polution). I was thinking of expanding on that and integrating lit, math science, art in & using our content standards as a guide. We'll travel the "learning trail" What do you think?
sinetag - My partner Susan says you are all correct - thank you
Melody - Mauri, how interesting!
Melody - I think I would love to learn in your classroom!
Mauri - I ment races, not raises ..
Melody - Did you say you are/are trying to be NB certified?
Melody - A vet I had was into helping sled dog teams. What beautiful photos he had on the walls.
Dana (carbag) - Sounds terrific Mauri!
Mauri - Thanks ...Well, it was a busy year, but not unusual. I am a randam , abstract type & thrive on this type of stuff. I HOPE to certify in Nov.
Dana (carbag) - Me too Mauri!
sinetag - i hope you all certify too
Melody - Well, folks, that 1-year hubby of mine is beckoning me to go to a movie with him.....think I should go?
Dana (carbag) - I told my new principal (same school I taught in) that I kinda "fly by the seat of my pants" following the kids lead a lot!
sinetag - your hubby is 1 year old?
Dana (carbag) - GO FOR IT MELODY AND ENJOY!
Dana (carbag) - Here's our comedian side of Nancy! LOL'
Mauri - I wrote an art grant so I could afford to afford my ideas. thisyear weaving & papermaking ... fun!
Melody - I, too, hope we certify!
sinetag - yes let's not forget that
sinetag - what movie?
Dana (carbag) - what grade do you teach, Mauri? I hate to ask but I have been back and forth getting Lara off to a friend's wedding!
Melody - Not sure of the movie yet! He put the paper down in front of me to choose, so I guess I better pay a little attention!
sinetag - susan says go see gladiator
Melody - I'll sign off, say au revoir, adios amigos, and catch y'all later!! Thanks!!
sinetag - bye
Melody - Oh, I saw the previews of Gladiator and it looked good!!
Dana (carbag) - He would probably want to see Gladiator - they say it is a "men's" movie! Lots of gore! I havent seen it tho'
Mauri - 3rd grade ... Is'nt seat of your pants officially child centered or generatve curriculum?
sinetag - (sorry to sound so geographically ignorant)
Dana (carbag) - I will never make it at the AC! I have been here for 3 hrs and it seems like 30 min. chatting with old friends! How will I get it all down in an hour and a half?!
sinetag - dana, you will be fine
Mauri - By Dana and Nancy :-)
sinetag - bye dana and mauri
