Debbie Mc. - Hi Kelly!
Kelly - Hi debbie!!
Kelly - How are you?
Debbie Mc. - I thought you were out of town today!
Debbie Mc. - I'm fine thanks. Hope everybody's doing well.
Kelly - I was supposed to go to a pre-RA meeting with MO NEA....but I decided I didn't want to drive 120 miles one way to go to it! I'll get my stuff when I get to Chicago!
Kelly - Hi Diana...how are you?
Diana - Hi - long time no chat - I've been a little busy, but I need some solace today - almost AC time.
Debbie Mc. - I don't blame you! I'm enjoying my time off too well! I've got to get started on something.
Kelly - When do you go?
Diana - How am I? Well, let's see, sweaty palms, stomach pains......I go to AC on Thursday - not sure if I'm prepared or if I need to be prepared.
Kelly - Hi Kathy! How are you?
Diana - Some days I look at the questions and say, I know this - it's what I do every day. Other days, I panic.
Debbie Mc. - Diana, you'll do fine. Believe me, you're more prepared than you think after doing the portfolio.
Kelly - Diana - If you've kept up with the posts and have read the AC prompt booklet I'm sure you'll do fine!
Kelly - Hi Sharon!
Debbie Mc. - Diana, I still feel that way.
Sharon - Hi, Everyone!
Kelly - Kathy....have you decided what you'll do next year?
Debbie Mc. - Getting the scores back helps but you still doubt yourself. Hi Sharon!
Diana - Thanks Debbie. You said that on the list too. Mostly, I think I know what I'm doing, but when I read about everyone's extensive preparations I wonder if I'm too smug.
kscally - Hi, Kelly! I'm fine. The children's last day was Monday. It's been hectic. I finished cleaning the room yesterday and read 600 messages from the mail ring today. Only 100 more to go!
Debbie Mc. - No, remember that some of us are obsessive compulsive.
Kelly - Kathy - we still had kids on Tuesday! I'm SO glad to finally be out of there! Hi NSharks. Can we help you?
Sharon - Kelly, Thanks for posting Clinton's remarks from the conference last Oct. I used it as a source in a paper I'm writing. Hi, Debbie.
Diana - Kelly - any definitive word on that virus from lat night - are you sure we couldn't get it just by reading the message? (I never saw an attachment, but my mail opened the message automatically. It was gobbledy gook.)
Kelly - Debbie - "some" of us? I think MOST of us are obsessive compulsive! :)
kscally - No, but now that I have a little time, I'll go to Mary's house with my calculator and figure out what to do.
Debbie Mc. - Diana, you're not the only candidate who is feeling overwhelmed. I've been contacted by a few who feel the same way you do.
Kelly - Sharon - no kidding? I really loved hearing him. He IS charismatic!
Diana - I expect to feel much better after AC. Hope I'm right.
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, I can't believe that you think that I'm obsessive compulsive. I do leave the computer to eat and drink. Sorry about the double posting. Hit update twice.
Kelly - Diana - According to my computer geek friends, there is no way you can get the virus from an email....so we should be okay. Supposedly it can't execute from an email message.....only from opening an attachment.
Debbie Mc. - Hi Bonnie!
Kelly - Hi Bonnie!
Debbie Mc. - Diana, you'll feel mentally and physically exhausted. I didn't do anything for a week after.
Sharon - I don't know what happened I got shut down.
Kelly - Debbie - My computer is close to the frig and the bathroom......it's called strategic planning! :)
Kelly - Hi Krisite!
Diana - Debbie, Oh no. I can't take another week off. I've got to get my house cleaned before I go out of the country in July. I won't be back until the week before we go back to school.
Bonnie - Hi Kelly and Debbie! Thanks to you both for your help!
Debbie Mc. - Have fun on your trip Diana. And you're very welcome Bonnie. Are you my Bonnie?
Lana - Hello, Everyone!
Diana - Is anyone else here doing AC next week, or are you all over it and relaxing. :)
Kristie - Hi, Kelly. I got on and figured the posting out. Thanks. I also copied the files and am going through them. They are so organized and helpful. Thanks!!
Bonnie - Yes! I like the ring to that, "My Boonie"
Lana - I am scheduled for AC on June 27.
Debbie Mc. - Uploading those files was very helpful Kelly. You amaze me!
Debbie Mc. - Lana, that's my 25 wedding anniversary!
Bonnie - Kristie, Hi! Are you Kristie H?
Lana - Kelly, when I try to get to the files, I still get just symbols, no words - Any suggestions? Debbie, I hope it's a good day for both of us! And your hubby too!
Kelly - Debbie - I need to learn how to do them in that pdf format that Nancy used.....so everyone can read them. Oh well, my computer illiteracy shows up all the time! :) But at least it made all that stuff available to everyone instead of sitting in my word program!
Debbie Mc. - Hubby's fine and I'll pray for you.
Diana - Can anyone help me clarify the play question. I don't want you to give away any secrets, but the instructions we have are pretty vague. I know there will be 2 scenarios. Are they related? Will we be focusing on social skills or socio-dramatic skills or can't you tell?
Kristie - My screen is so little. I'm only looking at one line at a time. HELP!! Yes, Bonnie, That's me!! Hey!
Lana - Kelly, I really like the photos! It's neat to see faces with cyber-friends!
Debbie Mc. - I can't help you with that Kelly. I'm not as literate as you are with a computer.
Nancy in NC - Hi everyone! Finished the AC yesterday. YEA!!!
Lana - Hi, Dana!
Diana - Kristie, drag the line at the bottom of the box to make the conversation area larger.
Lana - Diana, I don't have the impression that the scenes are related... I just assumed they were not.
Kelly - Lana - Go to Nancy's site.....you can read them there. The address is http://home.earthlink.net/~sinetag/NBPTS/ECGEN/
Bonnie - Kristie, I got 3 good books for us to use. The play at USC was fun, but not too helpful
Lana - Congratulations, Nancy!!!!
Dana (carbag) - Hi girls! Lana, I love your picture you sent!
Kelly - Congratulations Nancy! :)
Kelly - Hi Meme
Nancy in NC - THanks! It was a long day.
Debbie Mc. - I like the photos too! Diana, they give you a scenario and ask you to tell what you can that is significant about their behaviors and give strategies for dealing with the children.
Lana - Thanks, Kelly!
Kelly - Hey there Martha - are you Martha Massey?
Lana - Dana, when do you do the AC or have you already?
Dana (carbag) - Congrats Nancy! How was it?
Diana - Dana, How do you post the pics? I have a scanner and can manipulate graphics. I'd like to do it myself and save you and Lara some time if it's not too complicated.
Debbie Mc. - Congratulations Nancy! Are you exhausted?
martha - yes, I'm in NC - Hendersonville
Debbie Mc. - Hi Dana!
Lana - Dana, cute photo of you. Is it a school photo?
martha - I'd like to know about the pictures, also. I really like those!!
Dana (carbag) - Diana, Lara is the expert in that area! I will email directions to the list. Lara is at a wedding right now!
Nancy in NC - The info from the list was very helpful. We were very tired. We feel alittle lost with nothing to do.
Dana (carbag) - Hi Debbie! Lana it is this yr's school photo
meme - I am not sure, Kelly, how your computer is set up, but on mine when you click save or save as there is a box near the bottom that reads "save as type" and you click on the type file such as the one mentioned, you can also save it in "generic for windows" and anyone can read it from that
Lana - I have to set up some mentoring for new candidates in our district. Anyone have a suggestion of what the ratio of candidates to mentors should be?
Dana (carbag) - thanks! I don't get called "cute" often at my age! LOL
Nancy in NC - We took all the breaks and the lunch - that helped
Dana (carbag) - Lana you have a beautiful smile - you are very pretty!
Kelly - Lana - a "tilde", huh? See, I learn from you guys every day! :) Meme, thanks....I'll try to play around with it. I'm really technologically challenged!
Lana - Thanks, Dana! I sent a school photo too. I think it was last year's.
martha - I take the AC on July 9, Sunday! Any extra tips? I'm reading every thing I get my hands on. I'm most unsure about math. I have had third grade for the past two years. did nb with 3rd. before that had K for 9 years. Any tips?
Bonnie - Nancy, I have been reading about such horror stories. Were the folks nice to you?
Diana - How many pics are up now? I haven't checked lately.
Debbie Mc. - Martha, do you have some activities in mind for math and science?
Nancy in NC - Yes, very nice and understanding. Didn't have much time to use notes.
Bonnie - Nancy, what all did you take for notes?
Lana - Martha, a friend of mine went to the AC. She then looked at my notes (which I got from the EC Onelist) and told me that I should be in good shape. So I think preparing using the outlines we've been given will work very well.
Kelly - Hi Jay! Can we help you?
Nancy in NC - Math was the easiest because we had written an entry for each strand before we went.
Dana (carbag) - Meme, thanks for the comforting reassurance in the last email you posted!
Lana - When we write the math activities, do you think it matters whether the activities are for one day or more than one day?
Dana (carbag) - Diana, there were 4 pictures last time I looked
Bonnie - Nancy, where did you get the list for the strands? New NCTM standards?
martha - Yes, I have some...not sure about specific..but, after the portfo..on science I'm more aware of activities. Thanks for the comments.
Diana - Are you all writing up a complete entry for each math strand? Do you think that is important? I've been working on a list of ideas, but hadn't written them up - maybe that is what I should be working on now?
Nancy in NC - For science, I took a list of misconceptions. I also wrote up lessons for each area - life science, earth..... Yes, Bonnie
Debbie Mc. - Diana, I wrote one complete entry and then bulleted ideas for the others.
Lana - Diana, yes I'm using the EC GEN outline and doing a complete entry for each. Then I'm going to alphabetize and color code them when I get to the AC. I'm sure I'll be overprepared, but better that then underprepared.
Diana - Nancy, was your list of science misconceptions helpful at the AC?
Nancy in NC - Diane, we did. I just found that entry and typed.
Steph - Hello everyone. I'm new here to everything, the chat and the process. I will be starting this year
Dana (carbag) - Diana, I think it would save us time to go ahead and write up about the age and important factors of our class and what they knew when they came into our class. At least that is what i am trying to do!
Nancy in NC - Yes. Diane.
Debbie Mc. - I had my math strands ready and just pulled out the one I needed and started typing.
martha - Nancy did you use the NC standard course of study? Or did you use text for strands?
Nancy in NC - There was very little time to check notes. I had to rely alot on my teaching experience and prior knowledge. Does that make sense?
kristie - Okay, guys, Without diverging any critical info, Am I on the right track? I have taken the sample prompt and plugged in answers to each of the questions with each of the third grade math units that are taught in Everyday Math. Is that something that will help. I know the prompt is a sample, but the questions in the measurement prompt are so broad tht I thought this strategy might work.
martha - Nancy what grade do you teach?
Nancy in NC - Martha, I used the text for strands - NCTM
Diana - To those who prepared math lessons for each strand - did you treat statistics and probablity as one strand or two?
Bonnie - Debbie, how detailed did you make your math notes?
meme - When you get to the AC, you will not have time to look through a lot of notes. I think writing up each entry is a good idea to get it all into your mind. Then from there, I think just abbreviated notes to help you recall are enough.
Steph - I'll be here just taking notes if that's ok. I'll ask questions when needed.
Rob - I'm with Nancy. I had no notes. I just read and answered the questions.
Bonnie - I have a blank screen.
Rob - I feel myself to be reasonably intelligent and educated about children and how to teach them, so ...
Diana - Rob, I'm feeling better already. Did you feel like you were adequately prepared?
Nancy in NC - Literacy was the hardest - not used to assessing second grade.
Lana - Diana, one.
martha - Nancy, did you use NCTM from the internet? Did you go with state adopted text?
Diana - Nancy - I guess it all depends on your prior experience. The literacy sounds easiest to me. Now science......
Rob - I didn't like the script that explained the interaction of children. You miss the nuances if you can't actually see the kids interacting
Nancy in NC - Martha, from the internet
Lana - The literacy sounds similar to the portfolio we did on literacy. Anyone else feel that way?
Dana (carbag) - Jay! Please don't let our joking on the list scare you! We are just so used to each other we feel like old friends (and are now!) The joking is exagerated and to relieve stress! Do it! You will learn sooo much!
Rob - The AC ought to include a video of children interacting, rather than a transcript
Kelly - Rob, good point about not being able to see the kids.
Debbie Mc. - Bonnie, the first one (like I sent you was detailed) The others I didn't retype class info just the activities I would do and why and then how these applied to further math skills.
Dana (carbag) - What age do you teach Rob?
Rob - I teach grade 1
Nancy in NC - Yes, it is Lana, but I was using a k student
Diana - Rob, what a good idea. You should send it to NBPTS.
Jay - I am trying to come up with the money.
Kelly - Jay - what state?
Rob - I have a host of suggestions for improvement, but I will wait to send them until after I get my scores!
Diana - Jay - Where are you? In FL, the state paid all but $200.
Dana (carbag) - Debbie Mc, if I am real good will you send me your sample you sent to Bonnie?
martha - Was the literacy like the portfol.?
Jay - Kelly Louisiana
Lana - Jay, contact your local NEA rep. There's money available, if only a low-interest loan. Also, see what your state offers.
pooh - What is NBPTS? showing my beginning teacher skills now...lol
Jay - I am on the waiting list for state lottery money and am trying through State Farm
Debbie Mc. - Yes, Dana. After the chat if that's okay.
Lana - Were any of you working with mentors this year?
Kelly - Jay - Lana is right about NEA - I think AFT helps, too. Pooh - National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. This is a meeting about folks who are involved in the Early Childhood/Generalist part of that.
pooh - okay, thanks
Diana - I just sneaked over to e-groups and looked at the pics.
Nancy in NC - Kelly gave me some good advice the night before - Sit down, take a deep breath, relax and write. That's exactly what I did.
Dana (carbag) - Sure Debbie! THANKS SO MUCH! You know me by now - I don't want to miss anything!
Rob - Not here. I just consulted with my hubby when I wanted input.
Dana (carbag) - I had a mentor Lana
Jay - Thanks Kelly for the Info. I am a member and will try that route tomorrow.
Nancy in NC - Lana, we have a support group in our county
pooh - I am in NM and I have to take the 3rd part in July.
Lana - Dana, do you know how many candidates she mentored?
martha - Nancy what did you use for the basis of science. I have the state standards and a list of curri. from text and have read lots of misconceptions. Any extra tips?
Diana - Lana, We had only one certified teacher in my district until November when 8 more received passing scores. They tried to set up mentoring then, but it was not well organized. What are they doing other places?
kristie - I am preparing for Math by going through the sample prompt questions and plugging each of the third grqde math units in to those questions. Does that sound like I am on the right track?
Kelly - Lana - you might want to contact Wendy in Florida.....she is very active in mentoring and has great ideas.
pooh - Oopps. my screen went blank.
Dana (carbag) - What'd you think of the pictures, Diana?
kscally - I have to go now. Nice to be in the chat room again. I'll read the rest in the archives. The exchange is really good today!
Nancy in NC - For science, I used the first grade teacher's guide as well.
martha - Where did you get sample Math prompts?
Lana - Nancy, what was more helpful, the support group or the Onelist?
Dana (carbag) - Lana, she mentored 6. At the World Class Program here, most don't do over 10, but some do have larger groups, too
kristie - Martha, I'm talking about the one in the Scoring Guide that NB sent.
Lana - Kelly, thanks, I took a note about Wendy.
Nancy in NC - We didn't have any sample prompts. We wrote them from the questions in the scoring guide.
Diana - Dana - The pics look great. I think the school pic shows up the best. Where will you put the bios?
Jay - Thank you for the NEA info. I will check that out tomorrow.
Nancy in NC - The Onelist!!!!!
Lana - Thanks, Dana. We have about 120 new candidates in our district, and I'm supposed to be in charge of setting up the mentoring! Yikes!
Debbie Mc. - Lana, do you have enough NBCTs to mentor that many candidates?
Diana - Lana - I think the onelist has been the most help by far.
Kelly - Lana - Wendy's address is Wen21Not@aol.com
Lana - Nancy, thanks! That's very interesting.
Nancy in NC - Our support group only had two EC-GEN and I was one of them. REst were middle and high school.
Kelly - Lana - will you have other NBCT's helping?...or other NBCT's in waiting, I should say? :)
Dana (carbag) - Diana, the bio. will be scanned at the same time and will be on the same page as the pictures. I need to get mine done and Lana's for the examples!
Diana - Lana - You must have a very large district!
Jay - Buy guys, I am having technical difficulty due to a very slow computer. I'll check back next Sat. and let you know how my quest for funding goes.
Lana - Kelly, thanks for the address for Wendy. Yes I will have candidates helping me. We have no one certified in Nevada yet.
Dana (carbag) - I appreciate it, regardless! I love your willingness to help and share!
Debbie Mc. - Good luck Jay!
Kelly - Good luck, Jay! Email me at lkelly46@cs.com. I have a ton of information for you! :)
Lana - Diana, I'm with Clark County (Las Vegas). We have over 200,000 students. The district is very supportive of teachers pursuing certification.
Diana - Dana - I'll just sit back and wait for you and Lara to work it out. Let us know when you have a finished example to look at.
Bonnie - The onelist has been wonderful for me as there were no NBCT's in my district. I am so continually amazed over how wonderful teachers can be!
Dana (carbag) - Okay, Diana. Lara has been at her dad's in Ark. all week, so we are behind! (as always)
Lana - I'm thinking of keeping the ratio of 10/1 for mentoring - with meetings a couple of times each month with "newbies" and once for the mentors to meet. I think the district is going to pay to bring Virginia (from Idaho) out to meet with us.
Debbie Mc. - Amen, Bonnie!
Diana - We had only on NBCT in early childhood in my district. She did read all my porfolio entries, and that was VERY helpful. Somehow, I wished for someone to hold my hand and commiserate a little. You guys were great for that.
Lana - I think having people read your portfolios CRITICALLY is very important.
Bonnie - I thinkwe need a onelist conference or meeting so we can all visit with our pins on!!!
Kelly - Lana - Virginia would be terrific! :)
Dana (carbag) - Oh wow, Lana, Virginia will be fantastic! I really think the ratio needs to be kept down to be effective. But, to be honest, this list is the best help, even tho' my mentor was terrific!
Debbie Mc. - I think it's the day to day or minute by minute contact that helps so much. If you have a question a mentor is right here. But that's how I do the ones I mentor here at home.
Steph - Bye guys. It has been very interesting reading. Since I am a newbie, I'm sure I'll be checking back a lot more. Thanks for the chat the other night kelly!
Kelly - Bonnie - I'm all for that! :) I get to meet Wendy later this month in Chicago at the NEA RA!
Diana - From reading the onelist posts, I often knew more than the mentors in my district. I'm glad the list was there.
Kelly - Steph....take care of those kiddies! :)
Lana - I think candidates need mentors and the Onelists to be successful. This is really a collaborative process.
Dana (carbag) - Debbie, you are so correct! The immediate responces are wonderful! You never feel alone here!
Steph - Thanks! Bye
Lana - The Onelist has been a real lifesaver when it comes to AC prep!
Debbie Mc. - At the NB convention, some NBCTs said that they no longer read entries. It got to be too much for them to do.
Lana - Debbie, was it because they were reading too many entries?
martha - I agree with Lana, the list along with a helpful mentor was what got me this far. I tried to get the other 3 in my district to join the list. They never did and I know I was more aware of the overall process!! Thanks!
Nancy in NC - THat's a shame, Debbie. That's what really helped me.
Debbie Mc. - I only read about 40 and it does get to be time consuming.
Diana - I agree the Onelist is time-consuming - especially if you monitor other lists as well. However, it has definitely been worth it.
Dana (carbag) - I think my mentor would have benefitted greatly if she had read the onelist. Many questions brought to her, I knew the answers from here - sometimes there was some misinformation given. She was great to be available and read our entries.
Debbie Mc. - Yes, there are so many candidates and if you read critically and give feedback it is time consuming.
Kelly - Debbie, you held my hand as if you were sitting right beside me! I really appreciated all you did to make me see things straight!
Diana - If mentors don't read entries, what do they do?
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, you already had it right there. I was not much help.
Dana (carbag) - Debbie Mc how do they really mentor if they don't read entries?
Kelly - Diana - boy, do I know that! I'm on something like 10 lists! I spend an enormous amount of time here at the computer. Good thing I'm an empty nester! :)
Dana (carbag) - Diana we think alike! ha
Bonnie - Debbie, you were so through and helpful. I tell everyone how valuable you were to me along with kinderjane!
Debbie Mc. - Encourage and answer general questions. Guide candidates by helping them discover the instructions for themselves.
martha - Surely the number of mentors on the list is growing and should be less work as time go on. I plan the help this year.
Lana - I think our Onelist should have a section where people can volunteer to read for others. Of course anyone could set a limit on how many they would read.
Diana - I even read a few entries this year as a candidate. If i certify, I hope to pay a little on my debt to the list by reading more.
Kelly - Martha - I hope everyone stays on and gives back. We already have a LOT of new candidates signed on with us. There will be lots of entries to read - so if we have lots of folks offering to read for people it will be a shared load and not so tough!
Debbie Mc. - Thank you very much Bonnie. I love reading. It's just trying to teach school and do home and read entries gets to be a lot. I want that to be my full time job. Kelly and I have said that's the only way we'll leave the classroom.
Diana - Lana, what a good idea.
Lana - Diana, I feel that I will have a debt to pay if I pass, I mean when I pass, too!
Bonnie - Figuring out the process was as much a part of the portfolio as writing it. The onelist was so helpful in answering my questions.
Debbie Mc. - Remember guys that the number of candidates just about doubles each year.
Kelly - Lana -= great suggestion. Next fall I'll set up a Folder for people to sign on if they are willing to read. That way candidates can go in and pick some names to send their stuff to! :) Thanks for the idea!
Lana - Thanks, Kelly!
Diana - Besides, what else will I do witht the time I've devoted to the onelist and NB this y;ear? :)
Bonnie - Debbie, you need to share your talents with the profession.
Debbie Mc. - Diana, you'll find that it's very hard to detach yourself from this.
martha - I have to leave and take care of family. Any last minute tips for the AC? I am teaching summer school and working on AC....that's about it.
Kelly - Lana - if I don't remember, please remind me! :)
Lana - I'm amazed at the number of people who do not go to the Onelist. I know the candidates in my district knew about it, but only one has indicated she's used it.
Kelly - Martha - hang in there! You're almost done! I'msure you'll do well!
Bonnie - Martha, when do you go?
Debbie Mc. - You already have there Martha, just relax and think about what you do.
Bonnie - Martha, when do you go?
Dana (carbag) - Debbie is sharing her talents with the profession and she is giving it away! You deserve to be paid!
Lana - Good luck, Martha! Ok, Kelly, I'll remind you.
Diana - Do any of you get paid for mentoring in your districts?
Lana - Did you see the posting on the NBPTS site where someone is trying to get a Ph. D. program for NB going in Calif.?
martha - July 9 - Thanks for all you friends have done for me!! I faithfully read each and every day!
Lana - Diana, we get paid $20.00/hr.
Debbie Mc. - Dana, Kentucky is paying mentors next year! I think I'm the only person in the state that is "officially trained" to mentor. That's not to say that others (like Tressella Jaggers) can't do it too. I was much less secure before I was trained though.
Kelly - Lana - I saw that! Wouldn't THAT be nice! :)
Diana - a PhD program?
Dana (carbag) - That is a good idea about the folder Lana for people to sign on to read! I will be willing to help others! I couldn't have done what I have done so far without you guys!
Lana - Debbie, were you trained through the NBPTS?
Kelly - Debbie - you ARE terrific.....and you should be paid! Your time is valuable!
Dana (carbag) - I think in MS the mentors get $300/mentee
Kelly - Hi Rosie!
Debbie Mc. - Cheryl Snider is surveying. If you think you'd like to go for the doctorate, post it on the NBPTS site and Cheryl will contact you. I may still have her address if anyone wants it.
Rosie - hello Kelly.
Lana - I think the Florida mentors get a percentage raise, and I think it's pretty high.
Debbie Mc. - Yes Lana. You can go to a facilitator's conference.
Kelly - Debbie - yes....please post it....I don't have it! Rosie, can we help you?
Lana - Debbie, please post Cheryl's address.
Rosie - Oklahoma's Nb contact wrote her dissertation about National Boards. She just received it this year
Diana - in FL you get $3600 in you mentor for 90 hours (I think)
Kelly - Lana - I think FL gets a 10% raise for passing, and then another 10% if they can verify that they're mentoring....but I don't know how many hours they have to mentor to get that.
Kelly - Rosie - was that Janet Lloyd?
Rosie - I'm going to our states NB orientation meeting on Monday and Tuesday. Please refresh my memory on the Onelsit and how to get on it
Debbie Mc. - Cheryl Snider <csnider@lausd.k12.ca.us>
Rosie - nope, it's Gayla hudson
Diana - Lana - FL pays 10% of the average teaacher salary (3600) for certifying and an additional 3600 for mentoring
Lana - Idaho has a fantastic program - very high passing rate.
Rosie - ONELISt, bad spelling!
Dana (carbag) - In my mentoring group everyone said they didn't have time to read the EC_GEN list. I told them I didn't feel like didn't have time NOT to read it - It cut the time trying to understand everything and the writing!
Kelly - Rosie - email me at lkelly46@cs.com.....I'll get you set up! :)
Debbie Mc. - I've met Tamara Christensen that works with Virginia. She is a great lady.
Lana - Debbie, do we need to put the greater then less than signs on Cheryl's address? Where are they on the computer? (Brain dead here...)
Rosie - thanks kelly. Will do...
Debbie Mc. - No you don't have to put the signs. I just copied and pasted it.
Kelly - Lana - yes.....at the nbpts conference last year I went to a session put on by the folks from Idaho. I didn't know Virginia at the time, though! But it sounded SO supportive!
Rosie - are any of you MC-Gen?
Lana - Debbie, Tamara is going to come out with Virginia to help us - provided the school board approves! So glad to hear she's good too!
Diana - Yep - Idaho has the details ironed out - also the funding.
sinetag - i'm mcgen
sinetag - I also know Cheryl Snider
Lana - Yes, Albertsons is wonderful. I've heard Bank of America can be supportive. Bill Gates ought to help out Washington.
sinetag - her email is csnider@lausd.k12.ca.us
Rosie - what did you feel was the obsolute hardest part, academically, to do?
Debbie Mc. - You'll love both of them. Tamara actually teaches the class at Idaho State University. She's their teacher in residence.
Dana (carbag) - Hi Nancy mc/gen!
sinetag - hey there
Diana - Rosie - It all depends on your experience. The time is the biggest factor.
sinetag - hey there
Lana - Debbie, Neat! We had a phone conference with Tamara (we being the current candidates). She was most helpful!
Kelly - Gee, I need to get a drum roll on this page........Hi Nancy! :)
sinetag - dana, i like your picture
Dana (carbag) - Debbie, is the doctorate program going to be offered online from CA?
sinetag - hi kelly
Debbie Mc. - She's as wonderful in person as she is on the phone.
sinetag - r your kind emails
Debbie Mc. - Dana, Cheryl is trying to work on details now. Probably not completely distance learning.
sinetag - kelly- thank you for your kind emails
Rosie - I have ideas for each academic area but I'm not sure on community building. If you want to do setting up classroom rules you HAVE to di it the first week or else it will appear staged. My question is, would something like a space mission that suddently went wrong be a good scenerio to have them work out
Dana (carbag) - Thanks Nancy - it is this yr's school pic. Doesn't show the rest of my body! LOL
Debbie Mc. - But if she has lots of interest from NBCTs to share, it may help them see that there is lots of interest.
sinetag - Cheryl is working on it with a gentleman from UCSB I think
sinetag - dana, that's okay - mine's 7 years old
Diana - sinetag - I don't know if I ever thanked you properly for your help in understanding the science entry of my portfolio. THANKS! Science is the one area I've really improved as a result of this process.
Rosie - or am i way off base?
Kelly - Nancy (sinetag) is the one who got the files translated and put them on her website. I can't thank you enough, Nancy. I have to ask....do you pay for your website space. I'm really illiterate with that. If so, can I chip in for all the space you gave to our files?
Dana (carbag) - I will contact her then!
sinetag - diana, i think many candidates feel that way about science - i know i did
Debbie Mc. - If you let her know you're interested, she will send you updates as she receives them.
Diana - Rosie - are you middle childhood?
Rosie - yes I am
Kelly - Rosie - go to http://www.responsiveclassroom.org/. They have wonderful books. Morning meeting is the one I like.....but others there are great too. Also, the book called "The First Six WEeks of School" is great....I've just ordered mine, but have heard great things about it. It may be at that same site....I can't remember....
Debbie Mc. - Rosie, you can subscribe to their newsletter on that site too. They have lots of great professional resources.
sinetag - kelly, i have a web site as part of my email account - i actually have several different pages on it aside from the ec/gen work - i have a page for the eGroups mcgen email group with photos of many of them displayed - there is also a page on Backwards Planning for Science
Kelly - But Morning Meeting is a quick read...and good for all elementary......it will set you up for your community entry....
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, did I tell you that all first grade teachers at my school will be using Four Blocks next year?
Diana - Rosie, I don't know the specifics for middle childhood, but your kids are bound to be revisiting rules and procedures throughout the year, don't you think? I'm pretty sure the problem solving has to relate to the classroom.
Debbie Mc. - And have time for a real morning meeting.
Lana - Debbie, our school is going to use Four Blocks for the first time next year too!
sinetag - What do you want to know about the MC/GEN certification?
Dana (carbag) - Kelly didn't you say at one time there is a book on doing Four Blocks in kindergarten?
Rosie - I have found a good book to use for general things. It's called "Best Practice"
Kelly - Debbie and Lana - I hope you guys love it as much as I do!
sinetag - Fabulous book
Debbie Mc. - Lana, I went to a workshop June 1st and loved it. I had ordered and read the teachers guide so I was already interested. Kelly had told me about it. We'll keep in touch for ideas.
sinetag - There is an eGroups list for 4 Block Literacy
Lana - I think I'll say goodbye. My computer is really not working. Hope to talk to you more at another chat about Four Blocks. Yes, let's keep in touch!
Debbie Mc. - Dottie Hall did the inservice and it was wonderful.
Dana (carbag) - I love the Morning Meeting book! I have loaned it to 4 or 5 other teachers on all grade levels and they loved it, too.
Kelly - If you want email groups for Four BLocks, let me know......lkelly46@cs.com.......
Rosie - hello Bonnie
Dana (carbag) - Bye Lana!
Kelly - There is a ton of information on teachers.net about Four Blocks, too. Cheryl Sigmon's articles are VERY helpful. She's one of their top presenters.
Melinda - I just ordered Bobbi Fisher's new one that she wrote with her daughter on reading. I heard it was great!
Diana - Well, real life calls. Thanks for the chat and the confidence building. Next time we chat I'll be done with AC!!!!
Debbie Mc. - Good luck Diana! Don't be overwhelmed. Write from what you know.
Dana (carbag) - Thanks Kelly - will do! I used to go to her site a lot, but lately focusing on the AC too much to go!
Melinda - I have a question about two items for AC. First, Martin's case. His report card and records do not show any "true" language arts areas. Did I miss something?
Rosie - how often are these meetings, once a month? I know the closer to AC you get the more you have but I'm wondering for once school starts again
Kelly - Rosie - we're here every Saturday rain or shine! :) but write to me......:)
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, what do you mean by "true"? Do you mean how many words he can read or how well he comprehends?
Rosie - kelly, how long have you been certified?
Bonnie - Melinda, Where did you order Bobbi Fisher's book? I amdying to read it.
Rosie - where are you guys from?
Kelly - Rosie - nice question. NOT certified.....I'm a banker!
Melinda - I see Study and feference, math, SS and science and work Habits and that's all. Is mine missing a page?
Debbie Mc. - Kentucky
Kelly - I'm from St. Louis
Bonnie - Rosie, Columbia,SC
Melinda - Literacy First - 1 800 607 5692
sinetag - Los Angeles
Debbie Mc. - No, Melinda. If this year's scoring guide is like last years. You have it all.
Rosie - are any of your states thosewho paid your registration?
Debbie Mc. - Have you read the narrative part of the progress report?
Dana (carbag) - Hubby is home! Talk to you girls later! Bye, it was fun!
sinetag - I received the $1000 subsidy from the state and $500 from the Riordan Foundation
Melinda - Alabama paid mine, but I had to do a 4 page paper and video that I thought was tough until I saw the box!
Bonnie - My district and state together paid mine. I am worried about my banking fees.
Kelly - Rosie - my first time through I ended up getting all of it funded. Part was from the state, part from MO NEA....and part from an education partnership here in St. Louis. BUt there has been NO help from anywhere my two years of banking!
sinetag - There are elements of literacy development that can be inferred from each of those sections
Debbie Mc. - Bonnie, don't worry about banking fees. You will probably pass.
Melinda - Yes, I highlighted areas, but it doesn't seem to share anything in depth.
Debbie Mc. - The Pritchard Committee here in Kentucky will help with Ky bankers retake fees.
Melinda - Seems more confidence problems
sinetag - I believe what they are asking you to do is assess the student based on what you can infer about his literacy development
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, use information from what you have to plan strategies that will be meaningful for him/her. Strenghts, interests, etc.
sinetag - for example, in the Study and Reference section, it says that he enjoys getting information about animals from books - how would you use that information to strategize for this child
Rosie - hopefully I won't have to worry about banking fees. I am really going t otry to get things done from the beginning of September, work deligently throughout the fall semester and clean up stuff in the spring. I usually procrastinate but I certainly won't be here. One lady got her box in one day late and had to redo all of it
Bonnie - Thanks for the vote of confidence. My oldest son is moving to Alabama next week and he keeps telling me I will get it next year as he's so worried about me! I
sinetag - in math is says he recognizes linear patterns - what does that imply about his use of visual cues that you could than apply to understanding his literacy development?
Melinda - Bonnie what part of Al?
Debbie Mc. - Rosie, the sooner you get that box, the better acquainted you'll be with it. Summer would be a great time to get to know what you need to do and lay out a plan.
sinetag - Rosie, is there a question you have about the MC/GEN certification that I can answer? I am MC/GEN
Bonnie - Birmingham, He is doing his residency there at UAB. Where are you?
Rosie - is there no one in your arewa that is already certified? We are very lucky to have 7 people, and 12 more doing AC now so those who pass will be able to help us. Did you pass #3 and ten redo it because of a score you didn't like, or did you just redo 2 because 3 felt overwhelming?
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, it also says that he's easily frustrated by writing tasks and the challenge of remembering letter names. Does this mean he's struggling with phonics?
Melinda - B'ham
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, when I did my AC exercises, I wrote Martin instead of the child's name in the prompt. Had to go back and delete and rewrite it.
Melinda - I got those, loves animals, works with partners, some letter identification, not much support with homework.
Rosie - realistically sinetag, how many people is a reasonable number to have read your entries? Some people say 2 or 3 , some say the more the better, some say using a limited number
Bonnie - I am coming next weekend t help him move. I would love to meet or at least chat. I will e-mail you later. What is your address?
Bonnie - Rosie, I had 2-3 and more might make things more complicated than helpful
Melinda - I just thought they would give us more details, so we could pick more specific strategies? Seems I would do a full assessment with him (Marie Clay), maybe a running record etc.
sinetag - i don't think it's a question of quantity - i think you have two separate types of people read your work: 1/ those who know nothing about the process and read for 'understandability' and proofreading, and 2/ those who know the standards and the exercise requirements and rubrics and read to be sure you have addressed the bullets and are presenting your practice accurately and are analyzing and reflecting rather than simply describing
Rosie - everyone will tell you somethign different and that's not going to help much!
Debbie Mc. - Bonnie's right rosie.
Melinda - Bonnie mepayne26@hotmail.com Where are you? What grade do you teach?
Debbie Mc. - People who haven't gone through NBC seem to think that they want "college" writing.
Rosie - I have two people who scored very high on their portfolios and are very strict in their critisisms ( spelling) so I know I may not like what the have to say but they will be very honest
Bonnie - Melinda, I teach kindergarten in Columbia,SC
Debbie Mc. - They sound like good readers rosie. Use them.
sinetag - rosie, i think it is very important to remember that no one is an expert on this process - *even* NBCTs
Bonnie - Professors and curriculum personnel are really not the best unless they are familiar with the process.
Debbie Mc. - Amen sinetag.
Melinda - My second question is about math. Question number 2 asks What major understanding of measurement and what key ability would you want your class to develop . . . Are we only to list on of each? I have understandiings and key abilities that I would like mine to know over the year
sinetag - when I read candidate's work I generally do not criticize overtly - i prefer to pose questions to get them to think about what they're writing about
Bonnie - Melinda, What do you teach and when do you take the assessment?
Rosie - I know when it comes down to it I must make the final choices and go with what i think is best from all my selections and work
Melinda - I teach K and I take the AC on the 22nd of June!
sinetag - Just don't let others limit your thinking through criticism
Kelly - Hi Kit, can we help you?
Kit - I would just like to listen for a while. Thanks.
Bonnie - Take it July 3. I am teaching summer school until June 30.
Debbie Mc. - Sinetag is write about the questioning. It's not the readers portfolio and not their place to tell you what needs to be added or taken away. The writer must answer the questions that surface. It is sometimes a lonely journey.
Rosie - gotta go. Have been gone for three days to a science workshop and hubby just came home. I'm glad to have seen this place and I will definitely return.
Melinda - Bonnie, Are you ready for the AC?
sinetag - In The Support Network (where I work with candidate) we often use formal protocols for looking at student work and written commentaries - they are based on asking clarifying questions, making warm and cool comments, and asking provocative questions about the work at hand
Kelly - sinetag-who decided the protocol for your support network?
Bonnie - Melinda, NO, but I am trying to get enough information together to really start organizing for the AC.
Melinda - Any opinion for question 2 on the math assessment question?
Debbie Mc. - It is singular in the question but you must make that choice for yourself Melinda. If you write about more than one, justify how you will handle it. Remember that the activities will be related to the key understanding and ability.
sinetag - for student work we use the ATLAS Protocol (an existing protocol), for written commentaries one of our Curriculum Development Committee people wrote a protocol
Melinda - Thanks Debbie!
Debbie Mc. - It would be hard to teach more than one using only two activities.
Debbie Mc. - You're welcome.
Kelly - sinetag - are those available online?.....or only to you guys?
sinetag - I can send them to you via email if you like
Bonnie - I am very interested also, sinetag.
Debbie Mc. - Me too, sinetag!
Melinda - Will they realize that we "know" children need more than that one ability for each strand since strands are so broad and concepts are so broad?
Kelly - sinetag - you now me....always collecting good "stuff"! I'd love them. Thanks very much. lkelly46@cs.com
Bonnie - Kelly, maybe if they would be helpful you could put them on the file. You are so great about sharing there.
sinetag - for student work we use the ATLAS Protocol (an existing protocol), for written commentaries one of our Curriculum Development Committee people wrote a protocol
Debbie Mc. - You're only writing about one key ability and one understanding. For example, the practice prompt is measurement. First graders come to me with no or little knowledge of standard units of measure. I would choose activities to introduce standard units of measurement in order to further their knowledge. We can't get to another point without first understanding standard units, inch, centimeter, pint, cup, etc.
Kelly - Bonnie - tee hee......this is where I get my "stuff" :)
sinetag - okay
Debbie Mc. - Melinda, in kindergarten in Kentucky, children measure with links, cubes, etc. Am I as clear as mud?
Debbie Mc. - I guess I should say in my district and not speak for the commonwealth as a whole.
Melinda - I understand, I just have a hard time with concepts and abilities skills. To me concepts are very general so many abilities need to fall under there. Fore ex. Measurement concept from NCTM is two - Measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems and processes of meas. and 2. Apply appropriate tech. tools, and formulas to determing meas.
Bonnie - Melinda, One of my dads played college bb and was 6'11". We measured his length with his bb shoe as well as standard measurement. the kids really got into it and then we had to measure each of them with their shoe. They really seemed to learn alot about measurement from that.
Melinda - Sounds fun Bonnie! I Love math, really this one is my passion. I guess that is why it is difficult for me to narrow my thoughts down. Everything is important to me!!!
Debbie Mc. - That's just another way os saying you're going to teach height, weight, volume, mass, etc. with the appropriate tools and formulas.
Debbie Mc. - If you too don't have anymore questions for me, I think I'm going to take a nap.
Melinda - Are you taking it to mean we need to do activities from the beginning of the year when they arrive to us or could it be activities after we have given them exposure?
Debbie Mc. - I'm sure Kelly and sinetag can answer whatever questions you may have.
Kelly - Debbie - I'll talk to you later....I want to hear more about tutoring! :) Sleep well!
Melinda - Thanks Debbie for all your help
Kelly - Anybody have more questions?
Debbie Mc. - I think it means they want to know what you know about the children's knowledge of that strand when you get them, how you want to progress that knowledge and how you will assess it and how will this help lay the foundation for future math and real life skills.
Kelly - I think sinetag is still here....even though her name disappeared.....
Bonnie - Debbie, It looks like everyone is gone. Melinda if you get off here, I will e-mail you. Maybe if you can set up instant message we could do that. I don't know how to d it. My e-mail is bjiseman@aol.com.
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, they are doing my background check now. Hope they don't find any skeletons I don't know about.
Kelly - Shall we call it a day?
Bonnie - Bye Debbie and Many thanks again!
Debbie Mc. - Bye and Good luck studying.
Melinda - Thanks I do have AOL instant messenger meteach26
sinetag - yep i'm here
Bonnie - Thanks Kelly for all you do. Everyone have a good weekend.
Melinda - Thanks everyone! Back to my strands!!!!
Kelly - Bye Bonnie.......Melinda, any more questions for sinetag or me?
Melinda - No Kelly! I'll ponder some more!!!
Kelly - Okay then......we're out of here I guess! Thanks again Nancy......bye everybody!
Melinda - Bye all!!!
