penny/FL - The ac was fair, but because I didn't have a chance to really focus on 3rd grade (I teach K ) I answered some of the questions like I would for my grade level and am hoping the activities i wrote about would fit a3rd grade class. i don't think that's giving anything away
diane - my brother took pity on me since i can never afford to go anywhere so he said he would take me and my 15yr. old there on his way to visit canada with his wife
Marcy - That is a fear of mine, I think like a first grader and hope that I can go up to third and down to k and prek
ginger - penny, i teach 2nd and i am concerned that i won't be able to think about preschool enough. we all have our strengths.

penny/FL - Kathy, the state of Florida grades the schools based on test results
penny/FL - We had 2 F schools in our district.
Sunny - We are graded on the results of state tests that students take.
Heidi - We had 7 F schools in palm beach county
Sunny - None in our district.
Marcy - And I thought the AC was pressure
diane - the state uses tests scores to grade our schools...it is a BIG DAEL here
penny/FL - I'm in Pinellas. WE didn't have any F schools last year.

Marcy - We are assessed by building but are not given a letter grade. I am in PA
Kathy in CT - not me thank goodness. Talk about pressure. I thought teaching to the test in my case the CMT was bad, but to have it grade the school is scary.
ginger - NY has state tests and the results are published in the newspaper. My school is among the lowest in our area, much to my dismay
bruppert - yes, I have read some teacher's manuals and some other books but that is it
diane - bruppert i know what you mean...i have studied but it has been SO HARD and not consistent like i wish it had,,,i will have to rely mostly on ME!!!

Aggieb(K) - I studied the body systems because it could be for science or health, nutriotion, PE and physical fitness as well as some safety issues like bicycle, drugs, guns etc

bruppert - for me the big idea would be change with the earth and the big volcano. we read that in a weekly reader.
diane - i don't think dinos can really be inquiry based unless they use it to discover why they may be extinct

diane - i hope to do well with literacy...after teaching young children to read i should be able to pull this one off unless i freeze

diane - lends itself well to inquiry...also makes for a good venn
bruppert - they had plenty of questions too and we used those for our guidance in learing
diane - integrate writing as they make books about the diff states
bruppert - our video was a riot too
diane - ok...which one of us is calling nb to tell them to make the question on matter
bruppert - we used the format of the journal entries from the book,Doing What scientist Do?
Aggieb(K) - we could use an ice cube in a bag and set it in the window to see the 3 stages,, solid, liquid to gases
bruppert - Aggie, I did that and we had a contest
Aggieb(K) - I meant a plastic bag
diane - also make ice with 3 diff liquids and see if that affects rate of melting
bruppert - we compared the ice melting in the window sill and we put it outside to see how long it would take. we used technolgy with this too.
Aggieb(K) - I have read that inquiry science for small children should use the senses,, nothing magical

bruppert - when we melted the ice in pot the evaporation we tried collecting in a balloon and that was neat too. one of the kids suggested it.

Vicki in MS - Diane, you realize that I can't say much at all specific, but I would advise you only to hit the high points in studying PE. Detailed studying won't help too much.

Vicki in MS - Diane, I studied A LOT. Oh, I teach 2nd grade gifted. My advice to you, then, is to read Pathways to Play first.

Vicki in MS - I'll be really honest: literacy, play, math, social studies were pretty much what I expected. Science and the PE, health, safety question were not what I expected and they sort of threw me.
diane - how long have you taught vicki?
Vicki in MS - I thought time was an issue but I'm a wordy person so maybe it won't bother you. I've taught 2nd grade for 4 years and 7th grade for 10 years before that and years of subbing before that.
diane - i will be happy if after i leave the ac i have a good feeling for 4 of the questions

Vicki in MS - Golly, that's an interesting question, Diane. I haven't thought about it. It has helped in the sense that I quickly realized how much age matters in the way children approach learning.
Vicki in MS - Yardsticks gives a quick overview of the characteristics for children 4 and up. Very concise and useful.
bruppert - is it an expensive book or what?
Vicki in MS - It's paperback--got it from Amazon. I don't remember it as being expensive.
diane - teaching 7th didn't hinder nor help you with the ac either did it?
Vicki in MS - Diane, no, I don't think it hindered me. When I made the switch, I was very aware that I needed to go back and study the cognitive styles of little kids so that was a help.

Vicki in MS - Back to the AC, let me give you all a little more advice. The literacy prompt was EXACTLY the way it's stated in the AC booklet. It really is a progress report.
Aggieb(K) - I wish I could file an appeal based on age and get an extension.. No I would not take it.. I want to get it over with!!
