jules - is this the NB meeting?
ginger - are you a newbie or a CIW?
ginger - yep, i'm the only one here at this moment
jules - what is CTW?
ginger - but hopefully it will fill up
ginger - a CIW is a candidate in waiting- someone who has taken the test and done the portfolio
ginger - are you just beginning?
jules - I am a retake candiate from last year.
ginger - oh, did you do the AC this year yet?
jules - How do you feel about your test?
jules - No I have not done the test yet
ginger - i take it this Tuesday and am very nervous
ginger - what grade do you teach?
ginger - i teach 2nd grade in upstate NY
Jules - sorry my computer died. I teach kindergarten
Jules - in SC
ginger - where?
Jules - Is this your first year trying?
ginger - oh, i just had one of my kids move there from NY
ginger - yes, and i am most worried about 3rd grade ss
Jules - Is that an AC question?
ginger - i didn't have time to get any teacher's manuals on that before school got out
ginger - yes, we are to know about 3rd grade ss
Jules - Your questions must be very different from ours
ginger - can i help you with anything? maybe we can talk about it?
Jules - We did math one our grade level, 2nd grade reading, 1st grade science and play
Jules - I am retaking all except 2nd grade reading
ginger - i enjoyed learning about play- i knew nothing of any importance before this
Jules - Did you read Pathways of Play
ginger - yes, loved it
Jules - think this book will help a lot
ginger - i always enjoyed playing, but never thought of it as such an important thing
Jules - do more people usually come to this?
ginger - i hope it helps- i read it cover to cover
Jules - NB likes to here how the adult encourages the play
ginger - yes, usually about 10 or more! Kelly isn't here this week- she's at her son's wedding
Jules - do they usually come on time
Jules - do any retake candiates come?
ginger - yes, but some people don't come til about 4:30
ginger - i am feeling a bit stressed, so i was on early
Jules - what are your questions
ginger - yes, we have retake candidates and some certified teachers
ginger - what are important things that kids need to learn in 3rd grade SS?
Jules - state history
ginger - oh, we do that in 4th grade more, but that would be helpful to know
Jules - i think that is the mail history taught in 3rd in SC
Jules - main- sorry
ginger - ok, i could do that easily enough
Jules - your qusetions are just 30 min. each right?
ginger - yes, and the time thing is a bit stressful
Jules - hi
ginger - aggieb!!! Hi, you smart woman!
aggieb - Hi ginger, and jules
ginger - jules is new today
Jules - Well at least you know just to say the important things and not worry about fluff
aggieb - Yeah , ginger,,
Jules - I am a retake cand.
ginger - jules, when do you test?
Jules - Wednesday
ginger - do you have concerns?
Jules - aggieb, are you a new cand?
aggieb - what areas will you retake"
aggieb - I need to take the AC on July 10
Jules - Yes, I'd like to know how similiar the ? are to last year
Jules - I am reataking math, science 1st grade and play
aggieb - math this year will be K , science will be 2nd, and of course the famous play
aggieb - science should be very similiar,, we do not anlalyze misconceptions but plan lessons according to the subject and apply the big idea
aggieb - Ginger,, are you ready?
Jules - Just amke sure you say the word inquiry
aggieb - I think my major problem will be to settle down
ginger - i still stress over how to decide which Big Idea a given subject is in based on what I am teaching
ginger - i have read sooooo much on inquiry
aggieb - we have to plan the inquiry lesson,,
aggieb - I know,, I hope I can land that area..
ginger - and I know so little about specifics for third grade ss
ginger - but i learned a lot about play, so that's good
Jules - have you looked at the standards for ss
ginger - and i have learned a lot of good math over the years
aggieb - ss is going to blow me away I think
ginger - jules, i am going to spend the rest of this day doing just that
Jules - Will they give you a k subject to plan a lesson in math
ginger - i am not at my home computer, and all of my saved files are there in NY,
aggieb - I have a format for a good for ss if I can just think of the right things you put in it.
ginger - the tutorial i showed talked about how you would plan measurement learning for your math lesson
aggieb - I think so Jules,, and we find what the prerequisite skill the child needs to know to futher their understanding
Jules - that's what it was last year
ginger - aggie, what does that mean- you have a good format?
aggieb - just what Ithink my lesson needs to include
ginger - jules, they also asked what other skills in math could be affected by your kids knowing what you taught them
aggieb - It should be a series of lessons, not one
Jules - multi-cultural would be good
ginger - like, what else would benefit from kids knowing howto accurately measure centimeters
aggieb - It helps to problem solve,
Jules - i guess they want you to bring the math lesson into real life experiences
aggieb - critical thinking, representational thinking is also advanced
aggieb - Yes,, we should use real world experiences
aggieb - start with the child's own environment and broaden out
ginger - I sttarted to reread my entries because others had suggested it, but I was amazed at how many times I switched tenses, and got discouraged!
aggieb - that helps to build on what they already know
aggieb - ginger you are reading for content, not grammar
aggieb - Pull that entry back out an go for it
ginger - i know, but it was soooo noticeable to me
Jules - they are grading in my hometown as we speak
ginger - i thnk you're right
ginger - do you know what they are grading Jules?
aggieb - I am betting that maybe math will be on maybe patterns, because of the importance of patterning to other school skills
Jules - early childhood gen, special ed, english, etc
Jules - could be on patterns, but study measurement too, beacuse that was the practice quest and the real quest last year
ginger - mentioning how we promote equity, fairness and diversity in each lesson will surely help
aggieb - someone sent a message to the righ about 2001-02 candidates not following guidelines and how they had to not read the whole entry,,that was hard to heaar!
aggieb - Oh Jules,I am studying everything even fractiions
ginger - aggieb, are you saying that some of our entires didn't even get read?
aggieb - Ginger,, why if that is not part of the question,, is that not fluff
Jules - what do you mean about 2001-2002 cand?
ginger - maybe so, aggie- i need to remember to only answer the questions
aggieb - no, she said they read only the equivalent of the alloted pages,, so if your best shot was on the last page, you missed it
ginger - but don't they want to see how your lesson meets different needs?
ginger - oh, i am sure my entry was at least the right size
aggieb - That was really addressed this comment to the newbies.. Don't break the rules
Jules - they read 16 entries each day is what i was told and they stopped at the page limit no matter what
ginger - wow, imagine having to read 16 entries in one day,
ginger - i would hope mine wouldn't be the 16th!
Jules - me too!
aggieb - Ginger,, I have not taken the test.. from looking at the questions in the assesment book, that was not addressed.. you may be able to put it in your strategies.. with an array of them to meet diverse learners
Jules - got to go, thanks for the advice.
ginger - aggie, i have not been able to get the assesment from the NBPTS to work right for me, so all i got was the practice from Iowa
aggieb - I just know that I am going to try and answer the questions first.. and then go back and fill in with supporting evidence . or as much as I can
ginger - jules, take care, hope to see you on the ring!
ginger - sounds like a good strategy
aggieb - I would hate for questions 1, 2 be filled with fluff and 3 and 4 lay empety
aggieb - what good suggestions do you have for science or pe
aggieb - I guess everyone has tested except for us, ginger
aggieb - and after Tuesday, I will be a loner
ginger - I went online and read standards about pe, and it mostly made sense.
aggieb - I regret not testing earlier,, so many people have said that studying does not help,, but I read over things and just visualize teaching it in my head.
ginger - science, i am going back to read more about big ideas
ginger - i didn't want to test while i was still in school and i just got out on Wed
aggieb - Just remember it is what you want the students to take away from the lesson..
aggieb - I am working now teaching 6th grade and that is about all I can say about that
ginger - yes, and we need to provide different ways to affect different kids
ginger - you are teaching 6th now?
aggieb - No,, I am testing on the 10th
aggieb - That is my summer Job..
ginger - oh, i love teaching a different age than i normally do
aggieb - That was a not so smart move on my part.. but I am letting it work to my advantage, thinking and using strategies
aggieb - Oh, its a challenge but the summer of my testing was not the right summer
Carolyn/K/AL - Hi, you guys.
ginger - i have to go offline. i just got a phone number to call a teacher about 3rd grade ss. i'll post anything on the ring that i find helpful
Carolyn/K/AL - what certificates are you working on - EC/Gen?
ginger - bye, and hang in there, aggie
aggieb - Carolyn I am EC
Carolyn/K/AL - aggie, where are you in the process? - testing, is that right?
aggieb - I guess I am as prepared as one can be
Carolyn/K/AL - I certified in EC - anything I can help with?
aggieb - I am still struggling with science,, I have studied it all but I feel so insecure about it,,
aggieb - we have second grade this year
Carolyn/K/AL - Have you looked at student work at that level in science?
aggieb - I have a set of harcourt videos I have been watching,,
aggieb - we have to plan a lesson an d not find misconceptions
aggieb - They give you the subject,, and you plan the lesson, objectives and relate to the big idea
aggieb - Yeah,,debbie, I am still here)
aggieb -
Carolyn/K/AL - It has changed since I went through it.
DebbieMc. - Hi ladies...
aggieb - But knowing the content is the same,
Carolyn/K/AL - Just remember to think about what that age student already knows about the subject.
Carolyn/K/AL - And not just from school work, from home, from life....what misconceptions would you think that age child would have.
Carolyn/K/AL - And when you plan the lessons....make it as authentic as possible -- you know, real, for the student....
Carolyn/K/AL - Hi, Debbie
aggieb - I have thought about lessons that lend themselves to inquiry,, and tried to focus there
DebbieMc. - I guess you're studying for the AC?
aggieb - Hi Debbie
aggieb - I may be the only person left that has taken it
Carolyn/K/AL - That's a good idea...let the questions come from the students but also have some questions you might ask to get them thinking about the subject.
DebbieMc. - I've been very busy and mostly, just deleting messing on the ring. Way too many for me to keep up with. I doubt it, aggie. Lots of members never post they just read.
Carolyn/K/AL - I know it must feel that way Aggie, but I have a good friend who has not taken it yet, too!
DebbieMc. - excuse me--messages.
aggieb - I know that I may have to use models for somethings like space
Carolyn/K/AL - I have a feeling you won't have trouble with the actual subject...Just keep in mind MEANINGFUL experiential learning for the students.
DebbieMc. - aggie, this is just my opinion on the AC, but you might just be stressing way too much.
aggieb - even fossils,
Carolyn/K/AL - Yes, space would be a tricky one
aggieb - Debbie,, my solution would be to relax and I would do much better
DebbieMc. - I do better when I just relax and let it roll off the top of my head. The more time I put into it, the more I worry over every word.
aggieb - I really just read over things now and play them in my head, and see how the relate to my K class and then think of older students
DebbieMc. - My AC scores were higher than my portfolio and I know it's because I changed the portfolio writing way too much.
Carolyn/K/AL - Relaxing is easier said than done, I know, but that would help ...
Carolyn/K/AL - My lowest and highest scores were on the AC.
DebbieMc. - Well, I've gotta go. I was out of town all this week and my anniversary was Thurs. My husband and I are going out to celebrate.
Carolyn/K/AL - Happy Anniversary! Mine is on the 6th
DebbieMc. - Just wanted to drop in and touch base.
Carolyn/K/AL - Have fun.
DebbieMc. - Thanks, Carolyn. Happy anniversary to you! Mine is the 27th year.
aggieb - I have to make sure I am satisfied with my personal goals, and revisiting the content is on the list
DebbieMc. - Good luck, aggie!
aggieb - Thanks ,, Debbie
aggieb - I have done a lot with matter for science
Carolyn/K/AL - Sounds good, Aggie. Good luck from me too. I have to go too.. Guests for dinner are coming.
Carolyn/K/AL - Are you taking the whole AC or just redoing science
aggieb - I really enjoy the subject so maybe it will work for me
aggieb - I am taking the whole thing..
aggieb - all six areas
aggieb - Thanks carolyn,, maybe when this is over we can exchange K ideas
Carolyn/K/AL - I only had 4 areas and science was not one. I did well in PLAY and Math curriculum but lower in writing analysis and english as a second language.
bruppert - Hey aggieb how areyou ?
Carolyn/K/AL - Bye! Good luck, again.
aggieb - Ok.. trying to get the final handle on things
bruppert - what do you mean? you are on top of it all I know for sure
aggieb - I am reading the rest of the ss book today
bruppert - I must missed Debbie MC I love her !! She was one of my readers
aggieb - trying to get a handle on economics
aggieb - where is she from
bruppert - Kentucky
bruppert - I looked Wilmington up on the map
aggieb - So when do I see ya!!
bruppert - WE will be going to the beach with one of my brothers who lives in Charlotte, but I don't know whre his beach houseis
aggieb - I wish I could reach into the future only to pull the 10th of july to me..
bruppert - I can read in to the future for you, YOU WILL BE FINE!!
bruppert - when were you supposed to test and you changed it
aggieb - I will test on the 10th
bruppert - how are you doing with those th graders?
aggieb - the kids are fine,, I am doing ok, sort of stressful

bruppert - yes, this is the EC_Gen group
bruppert - welcome daisy!
daisy - hi everyone
aggieb - Hi daisy,, where are you in the process
daisy - I am a banker, I took the AC math this past friday
bruppert - daisy we are both in the AC process
bruppert - I took my AC test on Friday too
bruppert - aggieb is taking hers on July 10
daisy - are you guys bankers?
daisy - our assessment is different than yours if this is your first time around
bruppert - No we are the N
bruppert - we ARE THE NEW GENERATION
daisy - what grade do you teach?
bruppert - this is our first time around
bruppert - I teach first
daisy - I teach 1st grade too
bruppert - aggie is a kindergarten teacher, where are you aggieb?
bruppert - is this the first time you have been on this ?
bruppert - how did you feel after your AC test? where are you from?
daisy - I accidently got kicked off
bruppert - yeah aggie must have left too
daisy - I don't want to discourage you all, I felt I did not have enough time to write what I needed to
daisy - but most people feel fine after the AC, I am just very discouraged about the whole process right now
bruppert - I was ok with it , I paced my self for the 30 min
daisy - I am in Charleston, originally from NY
bruppert - I was feeling great yesterday but today I have reservations that I did n't pass, but I am just glad it is over.
daisy - I felt better about the AC last year
bruppert - My sister n law lives in Charleston
bruppert - they own a condo there
bruppert - she said she had a friend doing the national boards
daisy - It is hard not to think about it, but we have to wait 5 months for the results
daisy - where are you from?
bruppert - you are feeling bad cuz you are doing it over and that is a humble experience that I know I will have for sure
bruppert - I live close to DC
daisy - Hi dedra!
bruppert - hi dedra!
bruppert - daisy you know any Diehl's ?
dedra - hello, I guess I am late....forgot about the time difference
bruppert - where are you from dedra?
dedra - hello
bruppert - you must be on the west coast or midwest
dedra - I am not showing up, so I am going to try again
bruppert - Where are you in teh nbpts process
dedra - ok, reading the bottom of the screen instead of the top, duh
dedra - I am from Oklahoma, and I am a CIW
bruppert - me too!! CIW
daisy - I guess I am too, 2nd time around
dedra - I have told everyone I don't get my scores until Christmas, to give me time alone with them
dedra - until this year, everyone in my district had gotten through the first year, but this past year we had some bankers---thank goodness that ice has been broken!
bruppert - I have a healthy attitude about the scores. I did the best I could, I met some wonderful folks and if I need to do more than so be it,
daisy - I took the day of from school the day we could find out our scores, either way I did not want to be in school
bruppert - well only one person has it at my school and he was a banker himself
dedra - good idea, I might take a sick leave day, as either way I will be sick
daisy - I must go. Got to go make some piņa coladas!
bruppert - we had a cohort here from our county about 25 folks and it will be interesting to see who makes it. I will be happy for anyone who does and sympathy for those that don't
bruppert - me too about time for dinner. Good luck to you both.
dedra - sounds fun, we are going to go camping in a little bit
bruppert - daisy have you heard of any diehls
dedra - talk to you all later
bruppert - well see ya around miss daisy
