Debbie Mc. - Hi Kelly! Hope you had a good week.
Kelly - Hi Debbie!
Kelly - As weeks go, it was fine.....and yours?
Debbie Mc. - Better than the last. I was at school until 6 only one night this week! :)
Kelly - How's the application process going?
Debbie Mc. - The initial application and references are gone. I'm starting to work on the portfolio. It's been so long since I've had to do anything like interview/present portfolio.
Kelly - You'll do great! Let me know ANYTHING I can do to help!
Debbie Mc. - I will thanks. It's like a four step process.
Susan (NC) - Hope everyone had a good week!
Kelly - How was your week, Susan?
Debbie Mc. - Better thanks, Susan. Things are settling down after the 30 something day of school they should be.
Kelly - Debbie - you're so far ahead of us - we just finished day 14!
Susan (NC) - My week wasn't bad; found the book "Charlie Anderson" - my kinders loved it.
Debbie Mc. - We started August 8th.
Debbie Mc. - That's the cat book right?
Debbie Mc. - I'll try to use punctuation. Sorry girls.
Susan (NC) - Yes, it is a darling little book and I'm not a cat person.
Debbie Mc. - Isn't there a video of that book or did I see it on Reading Rainbow or something?
Susan (NC) - Our school system started August 11th, so you got me beat Debbie. Not sure about the video, never heard about Charlie Anderson until I saw it on our list.
Debbie Mc. - Susan, are you doing families for you SS entry?
Debbie Mc. - Your SS entry?
Susan (NC) - Debbie, I'm doing Families, but not sure if I have provided enough activities...
Susan (NC) - How can I get Art connected?
Debbie Mc. - If you're activities help students master the goals, and your assessment measures them, you should be alright.
Debbie Mc. - Singing, Drama, Movement, painting, sculpting,...
Debbie Mc. - Those are just a few Susan. What do you usually do with this unit?
Susan (NC) - I'm stealing the idea about sending a camera & a journal home. Just got 2 disposable, Kodak cameras at Walmart for $6.77 a piece!
Debbie Mc. - Get those students involved in art
Susan (NC) - When I taught K in FL - I would change my activities from year to year, depending on what the kids are like.
Dana (carbag) - Susan the JAZZ disposable cameras at Walmart for less than $5 do just as well for me, too.
Susan (NC) - Dana, what kind of puppy? I'm a dog person, never saw a puppy I didn't like!
Debbie Mc. - Do these children need some specific art skills/knowledge? I should say these particular children need specific art skills/strategies/elements/activities?
Dana (carbag) - Yes, Debbie - wearing me out! Last weekend for me to puppy sit until he gets bigger! He is a 7 wk old black lab - precious and basically housebroken, but whines for TJ a LOT!
susan (SC) - Hi Everyone! When videotaping and someone is doing it for me, do they zoom in on the child talking or do they just leave it in one place?
Susan (NC) - One of the children, a cute little boy has braces on each leg and uses a walker with wheels- I want to show how the children treat him with the same caring way as each other.
Debbie Mc. - Susan, it's your choice but if you have a lot of students talking you're going to be zooming in and out a lot.
Debbie Mc. - Susan (NC) that sounds like a good community activitiy.
Kelly - Hi Pat! Susan - you do not have to zoom in - but if someone is running the camera who can do it smoothly, it's a nice touch.....but remember - this isn't about HOW it's filmed! Just so the assessors can see/hear it clearly!
Dana (carbag) - Suaan, another teacher videotaped for me and she did go in closer if a child was really talking - she did a great job. If I don't score well, it will be because of my content or write up, not the video!
susan (SC) - Thanks Debbie
Debbie Mc. - I just set my camera on a shelf and pushed record.
susan (SC) - Thanks Kelly - I think he does a good job, but the few times we've practiced filming the children haven't been especially talkative and the audio has been weak. I'm working on them using BIG voices in all class meetings. I haven't gotten a separate microphone yet.
Susan (NC) - I'm stumped about what to do for Science, I had a lot of ideas until I went to a NB workshop and they said Science video needs a "Ah Ha" discovery......help?
Kelly - HI WENDY! Susan SC - I used the camera's mike...worked fine. BUT, we HAD worked on using strong voices for a long time!
Wendy - What were your ideas Susan?
susan (SC) - I wish I could get them to use their center voices!
Wendy - Hi kelly
Susan (NC) - I wanted to do something with butterflies - hatching out or tadpoles developing, but maybe that stuff has been done to death-
Wendy - Susan, I would foucs on something you can finish in a few weeks.
Debbie Mc. - Do a unit that you like that the children get to use their hands, their minds, their ideas. All children may not have an Ah Ha discover over the same concept.
Susan (NC) - Debbie, that's a good point to remember, would you share what you did?
Debbie Mc. - Excuse me, discovery over the same concept.
Debbie Mc. - I did a unit on rocks, sand, and soil.
susan (SC) - Debbie, what grade do you teach? I'm doing that unit now with K.
Wendy - I did motion, gave the kids PVC pipes, joints of diffferent shapes and lots of different materials to shoot down them.
Susan (NC) - Was that from the FOSS kits?
Debbie Mc. - Wasn't fancy. One of the units that I'm required to teach. In the video, the students were comparing...I can't remember exactly what they were comparing. May have been three different types of soil. They liked finding different objects in all three of whatever it was.
Debbie Mc. - I teach first.
Debbie Mc. - Sounds fun Wendy!
Debbie Mc. - I'm sorry Susan. If you're asking me, no it came from our science series.
Wendy - They had a ball with it. I teach pre-k special needs.
Susan (NC) - Thanks, Debbie - I need to remember to always use NAMES......you guys can't be mindreaders!
Susan (NC) - Kelly, how many members do we have now on our list?
Kelly - Susan NC - something like 620......earlier today that was the number. But people join and leave all the time!
Susan (NC) - Hi Mary Lou, are you the Mary lou from Maine?
Debbie Mc. - Hi Mary Lou. Goodness Kelly! How are you going to keep that many of us in line?
Kelly - Hi Mary Lou! How are you?
Mary Lou - That's me! :-)
Kelly - Mary Lou - I just want to say how impressed I am that you were up and ready to go walking before school.....at something like 4:30 in the morning!
Kelly - Debbie - with a whip! :)
Mary Lou - I'm good in the morning, but falling asleep by 8 o'clock!
Debbie Mc. - You'll need one Kelly!
Dana (carbag) - Mary Lou, I am really impressed with your posts! You sound like you are really on the ball!
Susan (NC) - Mary Lou, I have enjoyed reading your posts; mostly I'm a Lurker - I' m only a "Chatty Kathy" on Saturdays!
Mary Lou - Thanks Dana!
Debbie Mc. - I do the same thing Mary Lou. At 8:30, I'm out.
Mary Lou - I haven't got to the chat lately, because I was doing Home Visits.
Debbie Mc. - I had a Chatty Cathy and Chatty Baby brother and sister.
Dana (carbag) - You must have a lot of energy to do all you are on NB!
Mary Lou - I had Chatty Baby! I cut her hair!
Mary Lou - I cut ALL my dolls hair, and I cut my own hair as well!
Susan (NC) - I never really had a Chatty Kathy but a Tiny Tears.....anybody remember her?
Debbie Mc. - You must have decided you didn't want to be in the hair business Mary Lou.
Mary Lou - I had Tiny Tears too! And Thumbalina!
Mary Lou - I better never go into the hair business. I did a horrible job on myself. I laugh everytime one of my kinders cuts their hair and I remember! LOL
Debbie Mc. - No NB questions?
Dana (carbag) - Susan I got a Tiny Tears from Santa when I was in kind. or lst grade! Wish I still had her!
Kelly - We didn't have those "named" dolls when I was a kid! My favorite doll was made for me by my grandmother!
Debbie Mc. - Do you still have her Kelly? What a treasure!
Dana (carbag) - Do you still have her, Kelly?
Mary Lou - I've got to go out to dinner! Talk to you all later!
Susan (NC) - About cutting hair reminds me of a child who cut her hair in Kindergarten.......looked like someone shaved a dog! When I finally got through to the parents with several phone calls; their response was, "Is that what you wanted to tell me!"
Debbie Mc. - Great Minds, Dana. Kelly, it must be osmosis!
Dana (carbag) - Debbie we are thinking the same thing!
Kelly - Bye Mary Lou.......have a good week!
Dana (carbag) - Bye Mary Lou!
Kelly - I don't still have her. She was destroyed in a car accident my family had while going to visit my oldest brother in college!
Debbie Mc. - Through the computer!
Mandy - I have been eavesdropping for about a month, and am grateful for all the help and suggestions out there in cybrer space. I have a question related to some of the posts from this past week - where can I find the story of the Wrinkled Heart?
Debbie Mc. - Right here with our resident leader, Mandy.
Debbie Mc. - Having trouble Susan?
Susan (NC) - Having my normal problems of being bumped off....
Debbie Mc. - Did you decide on your art goals/activities Susan?
Kelly - Mandy - email me at lkelly46@cs.com. I'm the one who posted wrinkled heart....and I have it right here in my email program.
Susan (NC) - Mandy - you will love doing the "wrinkled heart" my kids are still talking about it even though we did it 3 weeks ago!
Mandy - Debbie - is the story from a book, or in a file somewhere?
Debbie Mc. - I'll check my Different Ways of Knowing module on Families. They always have art connections. I think one of them is a making a puppet pal that the child cares for.
Debbie Mc. - There will be more Susan. That one just popped in my head.
Mandy - Kelly - thanks!
Kelly - Mandy - I was told the wrinkled heart activity while at a "Love and Logic" workshop many years ago......I don't think it's actually in any of their literature, but the presenter told us about it - he used it in his classroom.
Susan (NC) - Debbie, I think I'll read my standards over again and just try some stuff; if it works great- - - otherwise, I'll be begging for suggestions!
Debbie Mc. - Just let me know if you want them. I remember that one because of the rice stuffing being everywhere.
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, don't you know that he'd feel great knowing that 600 teachers across the US are probably doing that activity?
Kelly - Debbie - YES - it's SUCH a great one! That's why I always try to spread it! It's posted on the teachers.net lesson plans......and I"ve posted it on the first grade mailring, too!
Kelly - Not my idea - but I'm always happy to pass on something great!
Mandy - Kelly - I am going to log off - look for my e-mail!
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, you have a gift for sharing.
Kelly - Okay - Mandy - I'll send it right on to you!
Kelly - Debbie - it's because I hang around such great teachers like you guys!
Susan (NC) - Debbie, I still would like the "print out" of Virginia's Epsistles.......when I printed it out; it cut off a lot -
Kelly - Susan - I can send it to you separately......if you want......
Debbie Mc. - Susan, they're on their way. Let me know if there's a problem.
Kelly - Thanks Debbie.........glad you had it handy!
Debbie Mc. - I mean that I sent them via e-mail. Or am I lost again Susan?
Kelly - Rose - anything you want!
Rose - Just to let you know, I am still actively seeking funding. In fact, I've got to stop seeking money and start writing!
Susan (NC) - Debbie, how do I respond to private message? Sorry to be such a dummy!
Rose - I have so many leads in the fire (or whatever) that if even some of them come through, I'll have money to share with ya'll. LOL
Debbie Mc. - That's alright Susan. I just wanted to let you know about the DWOK activities. If you want them, it's crow@muhlon.com
Kelly - Rose - would you mind sharing with me (via email) the places you applied to for funding? I'm working on a project to try to centralize information regarding info about nbpts - including funding....
Rose - I have been thinking about the units to video tape. Do I need to be in the picture or can just my voice and a little bit of my foot or something be there?
Kelly - Rose - you have to be in the picture. They will check the video against your driver license picture to make certain it's you!
Debbie Mc. - I think you need to make sure that you're visible for a bit Rose, but I'm no expert. By far!
Rose - What if my picture goes and comes? Is that ok?
Kelly - Rose - Keep everything you tape - but keep on taping. That way, in the end you'll have a lot from which to pick! :)
Debbie Mc. - Susan, about responding to a private message. I didn't tell you how. Down in the left corner, where it says send Room, there is an arrow. If you click on that arrow all of our names will appear. Click on the one that you want to send a private message to and click update.
Rose - I have the camera set up in a cornor and you can see all the children that way and see our activities from the side/front. But you only get a bit of me. Also that way I can keep it up all the time and just turn it on when I get a good thing going.
Debbie Mc. - I kept everything Rose and ended up sending one of my first portions of tape.
Debbie Mc. - Rose, I ended up teaching summer school for my first thousand dollars and scratched and saved for the rest of it.
Kelly - Rose - would you email me at lkelly46@cs.com with that information about where you applied for funding? (Sorry ladies - I know it's not EC-GEN related!
Debbie Mc. - That's fine Kelly. It may be good info for me too! I have a candidate who's having problems getting the money.
Rose - contacted Verizon, BellSouth, my school board, my principal even went to the superintendent, and I have several leads out to some private people that deal in diamonds up north, etc. and some land investors. (rich friends of a friend of mine.) That's all right now. Do you know of some thing else?
Rose - Sorry that last one was supposed to go to Kelly privately, Did you get the 1st part, Kelly?
Debbie Mc. - That's alright Rose. I hate to see candidates who want to do such worthwhile professional development go through this. Teachers are not known for having extra cash.
Debbie Mc. - Or at least I'm not.
Kelly - Rose - I only see what is on the screen.....is there more?
Susan (NC) - How many states provide the money like North Carolina?
Rose - I know what you mean. But once you get into this process you really get hooked, don't you. I cannot tell you how it has changed my life.
Kelly - Rose - thanks, I did get it now!
Kelly - I think I'll ask the list to start sending in suggestions. It would be a great file for us to have!
Debbie Mc. - Mine too Rose. I may get a new job because of it! Much better paying.
Rose - Really, Debbie? What new job?
Debbie Mc. - Suan, DWOK is a not something you can buy from a bookstore or school supply. We were a pilot school.
Rose - I see that it will open doors for me but I didn't realize they might be like your doors!
Debbie Mc. - Highly Skilled Educator. I'm just going through the application process. There's no guarantee, but my asst. super and principal tell me that having NBC will move me right to the top of the list. But I haven't interviewed for a job in over 17 years!
Susan (NC) - Debbie, Oh........see, I told you I was a dummy! I think it sounds like something I could use.
Debbie Mc. - Kentucky reimburses 75% of the fee. It's getting it originally that's so hard. Susan would you like for me to try to make you some copies of sections of DWOK?
Rose - The biggest part is how well this fits with what I did for my EdS and how my thinking began to change at the first of that process and now this picked up where that left off and has excelerated my beliefs and understandings. Does that make sense?
Debbie Mc. - Yes it certainly does Rose. It's true that NBC is life changing and addictive.
Rose - What is Highly Skilled Educator? Does that mean you will work with other teachers or what?
Susan (NC) - Debbie, if it wouldn't be too much trouble - I'd love it, since you know the kind of stuff I'm interested in.
Kelly - Rose - it makes perfect sense! And the thing that amazes me is that we are really changed FOREVER after having gone through this process (NO MATTER WHAT OUR RESULTS!)
Debbie Mc. - That means that I will work with a team who will go into schools that are not making the grade, doing developmentally appropriate practice, modeling lessons, adapting curriculum to state guidelines, low test scores, etc.
Debbie Mc. - I'll start working tomorrow, picking and choosing act. for you Susan. There's some good background material too. Why you do what you do!
Susan (NC) - Debbie, your new job sort of sounds like what they are doing in NC - those schools who are in trouble with our ABC's (state guidelines)
Debbie Mc. - It will be stressful, but the pay increases to a 12 month contract with a 35% pay increase. That means over 70 thousand bucks. I probably won't make it, but it's exciting to try.
Kelly - Debbie - we'll have none of that "I probably won't make it" attitude! YOU WILL MAKE IT! If not, Kentucky is foolish!
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, I'll have to deflate my head to get out of this room. But thanks for your encouragement. You're always supportive!
Rose - I know this will come out sounding wrong, and believe me I don't mean it ...but I was nominated for TOY this year. I have been nominated before but the high quality teachers that were also nominated make this a higher compliment. I don't even care that I get it, although it would be a great honor, but the big thing is that I am different from any of the other times that I was nominated. Different because of my studies and because of this process and because of you guys! Truly you have inspired me and sent me on. Thank you.
Susan (NC) - WOW.........big bucks time! But won't you miss your littleones? I'll wish you luck!
Debbie Mc. - I understand completely Rose. We make each other better and that's what collaboration is all about.
Kelly - Rose - congratulations!
Debbie Mc. - Yes, that's the hard part Susan. But think how many little ones I will get to impact in that job.
Rose - Debbie, you will be great. I can't think of too many people who can inspire others the way you do.
Rose - Maybe the difference you make in the other schools & teachers will make up for missing the little ones.
Debbie Mc. - Rose, I think your nomination is great and that it's a shame that a teacher of your quality, who is willing to go through NBC, has to go without funds to do this.
Susan (NC) - Debbie, what Rose just said is RIGHT......you go girl!
Rose - Thanks, I think the funding will come. I do believe that God has lead me this far and it won't be for nothing.
Debbie Mc. - Thanks guys! I need you with me when I go through the interview, portfolio presentation, written evaluation, performance evaluation, etc.
Rose - Even if I don't get to take this this year and I have to withdraw, I will have learned sooooooooo much.
Kelly - Debbie - I'll be there! ... in your heart and mind and soul!
Debbie Mc. - They're even coming to visit in my classroom! I'll be a nervous wreck!
Rose - Just do what you always do. They will love you.
Debbie Mc. - Thanks Kelly. I can always count on you.
Rose - Heck, pull out the wrinkled heart again. You'll blow their socks off!
Rose - Just joking!
Debbie Mc. - Rose, we're going to find that money somewhere. Will your local district not pay anything? Or your local ed. assoc. That's always a winner isn't it!
Kelly - Hi Pat - can we help you?
susan (SC) - Kelly are these chats on our web site somewhere? I missed all the good news about Debbie and Rose
Rose - Not the local district. The state gave out a limited 1/2 scholarships that were gone in 2 days in the spring. I was in school then and didn't know about it at that time.
Debbie Mc. - Susan, there's no good news yet. I'm just trying to get another job. I have to do a lot to apply and I won't know anything until after all of these things are over in January.
Kelly - Susan - teachers.net has an archive. You can read any/all of the chats we've had since we started meeting like this! From the teachers.net homepage, click on meeting archives. Scroll down to National Board and click on it. But it does usually take a couple of days before they're posted.
Pat - Hello everyone. Just remembered it was chat time.
Rose - I think maybe I could have played "pitty me" a little and gotten the other scholarship but I didn't want to do that. Like some of us, I am a single mother who has put myself through school for 3 degrees over the last 10 years. I also have a son who is in seminary in Phoenix (he's paying for that ) and a daughter who's a sophmore in college. I was a parapro when I got divorced and I have seen great provision for needs and wants. This might be a want but I WANT IT REALLY BADLY!
Susan (NC) - Have any of you done this process without anyone else at your school doing it to? I feel like the "LONE RANGER"
Pat - I'm happy that we're getting closer to November! Who's coming to Orlando?? Are we wearing green ribbons?
Debbie Mc. - I did it with nobody else in the western part of my state.
Debbie Mc. - No Orlando for me. No money.
susan (SC) - I'm the only one at my school doing this but our district is very supportive - we meet bimonthly to discuss things
Debbie Mc. - That's great Susan. In person support is great and this ring is great too.
Rose - I am very proud of you Debbie because it is always harder when you are blazing a path for those of us who come behind you.
Kelly - Susan NC - There are only a few people who even know about nbpts in St. Louis! No one in my district even wants to hear about it! Pat - I'll be in Orlando! I'm excited! Lana Hess is coming....Wendy will be there....Sharon from New Orleans will be there.......and I know a few more.......two "gonnabes" from mass. are coming....I'm sure there are more! Nancy Brown (sinetag) will be there....
Pat - My husband just asked me to help put the pool cover on for the winter. I'll be back in a while!
Debbie Mc. - I prayed long and hard before and during this. Still praying.
Susan (NC) - No Orlando for me either but if I certify ........I'm going to Disney World! just kidding, but I've always wanted to say that!
Debbie Mc. - I hope you all have a great time. If I can't be there, have enough fun for me too.
Pat - My friend Stephanie and I are both coming. We're from Mass.
susan (SC) - I want to do my SS entry on pets - like letting the children decide what pets to have as classroom pets, not so much the science aspect. Do any of you have any ideas on this?
Debbie Mc. - In my district, NBCTs make a thousand dollars more a year than somebody with a doctorate.
Kelly - Debbie - NEXT year, when you're making that great paycheck - you'll get to go then! You can talk the state in to sending you!
Kelly - Ah Pat! I knew I had written down that two from mass were coming! I didn't realize that it is YOU! Great! We WILL get together!
Debbie Mc. - I hope so Kelly. Maybe I can pay my own way then. No, I'll be paying out of a mountain of debt.
Susan (NC) - Debbie, maybe you should tell them to send you this year, it will be a great experience!
Debbie Mc. - I don't do a lot with classroom pets because I don't like rodent types and I can't keep a fish alive.
Rose - Just a quick question about topics...what do you think about life cycles for Kindergarten as a science topic? I always incubate chicken eggs for my farm unit. I thought we might include a few more eggs like the ladybug, (from the free offer from InsectLore) and of course the human life cycle and connect to literature heavly with many texts like The Little Red Hen and circular stories like Rosie's Walk
Debbie Mc. - Susan, my district was going to pay half and my local ed. assoc. the other half. The local ed. assoc. backed out. That's how much they support NBC.
Kelly - Susan SC - Contact Dana (carbag).....she talked a LOT about pets - maybe it was even her science video.....but she has great ideas about it! Do you have her email address?
Susan (NC) - Talking about pets in the classroom - do any of you know about "Betta Bowls" - just found out about them; really neat!
Debbie Mc. - Susan, I'm sorry I'm not much help with pets. My fish in my Betta Bowl died.
susan (SC) - I had a parent offer to let us have a bird but I 'm not crazy about that, but I have managed to keep fish alive for the past two years
Kelly - Susan - I saved info about them last year - and really would love to get one......but now can't find the info! Do you still have it? Can you email me about it at lkelly46@cs.com?
Debbie Mc. - If Susan doesn't have it, Dana does. She sent it to me.
susan (SC) - Kelly I don't have Dana's address
Debbie Mc. - They also have it at Wal-Mart.
Kelly - carbag@network-one.com is Dana's address
Rose - another question about the Mailring: why do some postings come up with a Digest #? Is it because they are reading from the archives? I always go back to see what they are responding to and I can figure out what Digest #4444 is or something
Debbie Mc. - Susan, Dana is very supportive too.
Susan (NC) - Kelly, I just did a search on the internet and I read about information - they even had a club! If I saved it in " favorites" I'll send you what I found out.
susan (SC) - Thanks Kelly and Debbie
Debbie Mc. - You're welcome Susan. Look for the pets in the social studies standards. You might get some ideas there.
Kelly - Rose - some members choose to receive our messages in "digest" form. The digest is sent out every 25 messages OR 24 hours - whichever happens first. So someone getting it that way who wanted to respond to something would click on reply - and if they don't change the subject line, it comes up as the digest that the original message appeared in......
susan (SC) - Debbie - I looked at the website for the Natl SS standards and it was volumes. Do I need to really print it all out and study it. Is this what ya'll are talking about when they say people tape the standards and listen to them, or are you talking about the NB standards? I feel so dumb about these types of things
Kelly - Susan SC - they're mostly talking about nbpts standards when they mention taping them and reading them a jillion times......also, have you seen the buzz words?
Debbie Mc. - NB Standards Susan. Does your district or state include pets? Can you do a search at the National site. You're not dumb. We just don't know these things unless somebody tells us or we read it somewhere. That's what's so great about going through NBC. You learn so much.
Kelly - Susan - not one of us is dumb! But we all will never learn everything! Where our ring helps out so much is that SOMEBODY knows the answer - or at least where to find it!
Debbie Mc. - That booklet that came with your box Susan. If the unit that you teach is relevant to your children than it's okay. Remember that Virginia said it was HOW you teach it.
Debbie Mc. - I'm sorry that should have been then it's okay.
susan (SC) - I have seen the buzz words, but I just don't understand about the National Standards. Our state standards in K SS include responsibility to home, community, etc. This is sorta where I was heading - Letting the children decide how to pay for the pets (money raising projects)upkeep, etc. Community workers is also a big part of our standards so I was going to do the Vet things
Debbie Mc. - Remember to justify why you're teaching the unit when you write it up.
Susan (NC) - Thought so.....just got bumped!
Rose - I am sorry to leave but I think I better go out and cut the grass. It seems that I say that almost every week. Is the grass growing in your neck of the woods like it is here?
Kelly - Susan SC - as you write up whatever you do, you will mention how it is part of your state standards....
Debbie Mc. - My husband usually does that on Saturday but didn't have to today because it didn't grow enough.
Kelly - Rose - I live in a condo so I don't notice those things! It's all done for us!
Susan (NC) - Rose, it has been raining here all day! Maybe it is the leftover of the hurricane.
Rose - That might just be a Georgia thing since we've had so much rain lately. Didn't have any all summer and now when school is in we have tooooooo much ( no outside play).
Debbie Mc. - Bye Rose. Good luck!
Rose - Well, bye and thanks for all the encouragment. As always, it is a pleasure to be with you ladies!
susan (SC) - I need to go also. Pray that the hurricanes are sleeping next week. I am going on a cruise Thursday - my first ever- and I hope the weathe will cooperate. We had our rain during the night. I'm in Charleston, SC Thanks for all your help today. You've been most kind and patient
Susan (NC) - Bye Rose, hope you'll be back next week.
Debbie Mc. - Susan, I'm sorry I wasn't more help.
Susan (NC) - Bye Susan, have a good week!
Debbie Mc. - Have fun on your cruise!
susan (SC) - You were ALL great! Bye
Kelly - Hi Jackie! How are you?
Kelly - Bye to all of you taking off!
Jackie - Just trying to stay warm!!! After temps in the high 90's earlier this week, it's hard to accept temps in the 30's to 50's!!!
Susan (NC) - Where do you live Jackie?
Kelly - It's supposedly coming our way, Jackie! It's still in the 70s here - but supposed to drop considerably tonight and tomorrow....
Jackie - Does anyone have to write the standards on every lesson you teach??
Kelly - Hi Sandy - can we help you?
Jackie - In south central South Dakota!
Debbie Mc. - I have to write the number in my lesson plan book and check the number on the correct date in a book with the date and number in a chart form.
Sandy - I am working on my SS unit (Australia and the Olympics). Can I use digital camera pictures for artifacts. The majority of our work is big and two-dimensional.
Jackie - Where do you get the time to pour through every subject standard and do that???
Debbie Mc. - Jackie, this is AFTER we aligned the curriculum with the standards. So, we've done this about four times now each time we write the lesson plan.
Susan (NC) - We have our lesson plans checked weekly ( by our principal) but do not have to have standards or objectives written.
Debbie Mc. - I was there one night this week until 6 o'clock doing just that for one week.
Debbie Mc. - We turn in a carbon copy each week. Due on Fridays by 3 for the next week.
Jackie - We've already aligned out curriculum with the standards. We were told that not all standards were covered in the texts. I believe that is why we pull resources to cover those standards. I guess it all boils down to accountability, but, again, It is extremely time consuming!!
Debbie Mc. - I know Jackie, and trust.
Susan (NC) - Wow......don't tell my principal - he checks them Tuesday afternoon for the week. Hopefully, I'll never be sick on Monday!
Kelly - I'm keeping VERY quiet on the lesson plan thing! So far our prin hasn't made us turn them in. I know it's coming though.....
Kelly - It's SUCH a waste of time to have to write it out the way you all are talking about!
Susan (NC) - Think I'd better think about something for dinner, wish something was cooking in my crockpot!
Debbie Mc. - About Wed. or Thurs. I have planned for the next week and have folders with all materials for the coming week. Ready in case, I'm sick.
Jackie - We turn in lesson plans for nine weeks only, due in the office by Friday, 4:00. Then after the nine weeks are over with, they still must by done by Friday, but we no longer have to turn them in to the office. They must be done...and on our desk.
Kelly - Well, I have to go, folks. I have a ton of stuff to do tonight. I'll talk to you all soon. Have great weeks everybody!
Debbie Mc. - Bye Kelly. Hope to hear from you soon.!
Susan (NC) - Bye Kelly, thanks for your help!
Jackie - Have a great week, also, Kelly!
Susan (NC) - I'm going too gang......until next week, be good & be happy everybody!
Debbie Mc. - Jackie, just think of how much you could do with that time that you spend writing down standards.
Jackie - I can never figure out how most staff can walk out of the building immediately after dismissal, while I'm usually there until 6:30 and still have tons of things that must be done! I am at school 45 minutes before school starts. By Friday, I'm done for.
Debbie Mc. - Me Too! I get there at 7:00 and stay until at least 4:00 every day and that's early. Most days it's 5 or 6.
Jackie - What grade level do you teach? I teach kindergarten. I've taught kinders for 10 years.
Debbie Mc. - First for 17 years.
Debbie Mc. - Are you going through NBC?
Jackie - Is your kindergarten program half/day, full-every other day, or full everyday?
Jackie - I don't know what you mean by NBC?
Debbie Mc. - All day every day. I live in Ky.
Debbie Mc. - National Board Certification. This was a meeting for candidates who are going through to get help and support.
Jackie - At this time, we aren't.
Debbie Mc. - National Board Certification is an individual professional development.
Jackie - We've done full every day kindergarten for 5 years now. I used to teach full every other day, and after teaching full every day, I don't know how I managed to survive it!!
Debbie Mc. - Have you heard of it before?
Jackie - No, I haven't heard of it. Where can I get information on it?
Debbie Mc. - www.nbpts.org is the home page. We're all members of an early childhod generalist group at egroups.com
Debbie Mc. - It will change the way that you teach and how you view the teaching profession. What state do you live in?
Jackie - We haven't received any information on it. I live in SD
Jackie - It sounds uplifting.
Debbie Mc. - If you go to your state department of education web page there may be some information on it. You can get facts from the National Board for Professional Teaching STandards website. You can get more information there or by calling 1-800-22-TEACH.
Debbie Mc. - VERY strenuous but very worth it.
Debbie Mc. - We chat here at teachers.net every Saturday at 3 central/4 eastern time.
Jackie - Don't know if I can handle any more stress these days. But if one is in the teaching profession, one must keep up with progress!
Debbie Mc. - Candidates who are going through the process come here on Saturdays to chat with National Board Certified Teachers who answer questions, give support, etc.
Jackie - I've learned alot about the chat room. Thanks for the Saturday time slot. I usually spend Saturdays catching up with me... Some days I don't know if I'm coming or going!
Jackie - It was nice chatting with you, Debbie. It's time for me to start supper. Have a great week.
