liz - hello??
liz - are there any chatters out there?
Susan (NC) - Guess no one is here yet besides us!
liz - Are you a candidate?
Susan (NC) - No, I'm a banker; waiting to hear in Nov. like a lot of people!
liz - oh...I'm a newbie
liz - Hi kim
kim - hi - i'm new at this and not sure which button to push
Susan (NC) - What are you working on so far?
kim - i'm "working " on entry 4 - but i haven't started to write
Susan (NC) - I hope that some of the new generation come on board today because all my directions were for the previous NB candidates. Lots of changes from what I understand-
liz - I find the process extremely frustrating....I tried to videotape about 6 times this past week all that could go wron did! I'm working on the ss/art/social skill
Susan (NC) - Keep practicing at the video's........you never know which one might be a "keeper!"
liz - What changes are you referring to?
liz - If I could get one I'd be happy!
liz - Looking bac, Susan, what advice canyou give usnewbies?
liz - Sorry for the typos
kim - did you do anything special - mics, etc. when videotaping - do you have a newer camera?
Susan (NC) - I had a old clunker (video camera) that was the schools' saved me from buying or borrowing one; looking back though I wish I had bought my own-
liz - I used one of our cameras at school (ancient) and a mic that I culd carry with me...first try, no sound. then the sound muffled, then no sound again....ugh
liz - I'm about ready to buy my own....very frustrating week with all of that goingon!
Susan (NC) - I did buy the Radio Shack mic though........it really helped!
liz - ooohhhh how much and what kind?
kim - is that one you take with you? i am considering buying a new camera for our family - thinking this is a good excuse, i'm nervous about starting the videotaping part - i don't even have all my permission slips in yet.
Susan (NC) - It is the omnidirectional one that the ring talked about ( sort of looks like a bat?) It was about $50. if I remember; I used my instructional funds for it- so it didn't come out of my pocket, then donated it back to our school library.
liz - what a great idea!
liz - It worked well?
kim - did you have someone videotape for you?
liz - yes, another newbie....
kim - i need to get that in motion, too
Susan (NC) - It plugged into the camera and you could put the mic on the table and has a cord a mile long.............but warn the kids about "IT IS NOT A TOY" I have a tape with this kid holding up to his mouth, saying "Lights, Camera , Action".............
kim - so many details i feel like i'm so far behind and i've just begun
liz - Susan, what adice can you give us that are beginning?
liz - too funny!
liz - Yes, I know how you feel kim...
kim - it's frustrating because i need to spend so much time on my teaching
liz - Susan, whatdid you feel was your best portfolio and why?
liz - What grade, Kim?
kim - i teach 2nd
kim - what about you?
liz - 3rd
Susan (NC) - Being a member of the ring & this Sat. chat really helped my frustrations.
liz - I couldhave donethe MC GEN or EC Gen
kim - i see, are they similar/
liz - Yes, so farthis ring has been great ...helpsto vent and clarify!
Susan (NC) - I never felt like I had a great portfolio because I'm a resource teacher (Reading K-5) I had to borrow a K class and frankly...........it was really hard!
liz - The directions aredifferent
liz - oh I bet that was...its hard with your ownclass!!
kim - that would be difficult to not have your own class. i have a great class this year and i'm glad i decided to start this now
kim - liz,is your portfolio due in March?
liz - no, feb
kim - have you written much, if so, how is that part going?
liz - I have a rough draft of port4 and rough of 2 now I'm trying to comeup with an inquiry lesson for the sci....
liz - They all need to revised agreat deal....lots of revising....
liz - where are you from kim
kim - i'm thinking i need to just start writing and go from there
kim - i'm from ohio - akron/canton area
kim - how about you?
liz - yep thats what I did.oh I'm from east Cleve
liz - I don't live therenow....grew up there...now I live and teachin FL
Susan (NC) - I wish Kelly or Debbie Mc would drop today........they are the experts!!
kim - that's neat = you know the area.
liz - yes!...Do you have a studey group?
liz - study
Susan (NC) - I taught in Key Largo for 10 yrs. before moving to NC.
liz - I really do know how to spell!
kim - i have a mentor, we will meet in a couple weeks, other than that, i don't know anyone who is doing this
liz - Cool...I love it down there...We vacation at Hawk's Kay Resort
Susan (NC) - Having someone who has gone through it before really helps..........I'm the only one who has tried it in my school!
liz - I have 3 mentors and they all have different opinions!
kim - that would be hard,
liz - Susan, any ideas for the inquiry science lesson?
liz - The only thing I know is that it has to be inquiry
kim - how about ideas for the soc. studies - do you have to use art, or can it be the arts - like music , too
liz - any ofthe arts
liz - sounds like you want implementmusic?
kim - i'm thinking about it - but i don't really have any good ideas, just thinking
liz - I did a visual arts lesson
Susan (NC) - Science was one of the portfolio's I redid - the first go round; I didn't have a clue.........did it on 5 senses and the 2nd time was on Mealworms and (hopefully) it was much better!
liz - remember to integrate the arts, a soscial studies lesson and a social skill
kim - what grade do you teach, susan
liz - what made it better??
kim - hi, tmwl
tmw1 - Hello everyone! I am just beginning the process of nbc. Any good tips?
liz - perserverence!
Susan (NC) - I'm a K-5 reading teacher but borrowed a K class to do NB - - - I have taught K , 2nd & 4th before my reading position.
tmw1 - I really don't know where to start.
kim - just beginning, too liz, have you been videotaping a lot of discussions in you ss. unit?
liz - sems like everyone I know begins with the accomplishments
tmw1 - I haven't received my box yet, but I did download the portfolio instructions and standards to start looking over.
Susan (NC) - What made it better? I just had a better feel about the whole process, I began to understand that inquirey just doesn't mean "hands on" - I had a lot of help from the wonderful guru's on this ring!
liz - trying to...my children are not very verbal. It is the quietest class I've ever had!
kim - that's how i started - just by reading, in fact i'm really still in that stage and need to get off the mard
kim - mark
Susan (NC) - The only tip I could add is READ everything you can get your hands on about NB and forget about doing anything else for a year until it is sent in and the AC is over!
kim - sorry
liz - Do you recommend any good books?
tmw1 - Is there a particular way that the they are looking for me to word everything.
Susan (NC) - Is everyone a member of Kelly's EC GEN ring? So many helpful people make it up!
liz - I've been told.....just answer the questions
LN - did I miss the chat
tmw1 - At my school, there are 15 first grade classes. One teacher is already nbc and 11 of us are just beginning the process.
kim - i have to go to a b-day party, thanks for the encouragement and info, maybe i'll talk to you next sat.
liz - There are 5 at my school and 3 going for it this year
Susan (NC) - Everyone who has passed says it can be done more than 1 way..............there are no "cookie cutter' answers. Just hope my cookies make it this time!
liz - by Kim
liz - The question is. what makes one cookie better than the other?
liz - Does anyone really know?
Susan (NC) - AMEN!! Chocolate chip silly-
LN - did the chat already finish?
tmw1 - What type of lessons are they looking for in the building the classroom community entry.
liz - of course!
tmw1 - Hello Ln
Susan (NC) - The book Morning Meetings really helped me build classroom community
LN - Hi tmwl
liz - any books for science inquiry?
tmw1 - Can I get that book from a regular book store or off the internet
Susan (NC) - Another good book was Constructing Curriculum In the Primary Grades - for science, Doing what Scientists Do helped me.
LN - go to your library and request it there
liz - oohhh thaks
bruppert - Hey everyone how are you all?
LN - It might take awhile but most of the books I used I got through my library
liz - hi there
tmw1 - What type of accomplishments are they looking for? Courses taken? parent workshops given? that type of stuff? If so, what sort of documentation can I give for that? Sorry to ask so many questions at once.
bruppert - Hey Susan they are all great books I got them all last year
LN - Can anyone tell me if I missed the chat with Kelly?
liz - She has not been on
bruppert - I just got here and Kelly is not here so far today
Susan (NC) - Can you help these newbies Bruppert.........I have to leave and I'm glad you are here!
tmw1 - Thanks for the info Susan.
bruppert - OH thanks alot, I don't know if Ic an help them or not
bruppert - but I will try for sure, what questions do you guys have?
tmw1 - Hello bruppert!
Susan (NC) - Since I'm the "older generation" NB - I feel like I'm out of the loop-
bruppert - Susan gave you all the books I got last year when I worked on the National Boards
Susan (NC) - Good luck everybody and don't give up............no matter what!
bruppert - What questions do you have?
tmw1 - What type of accomplishments are they looking for? courses taken? parent workshops given? If so, what types of documentation can I give for those?
bruppert - you must show how any of these things you mentioned showed student impact
tmw1 - Do you mean like how the courses I have taken have improved my teaching skills and given me new ways to help students learn the given material?
bruppert - You must be talking about Entry 4 Documented Accomplishments-- you can show how you got an grant for your school or you went to a conference and you made that part of your class.
tmw1 - If I used a conference that I went to, what sort of documentation can I give for that?
bruppert - For me I had taken a computer technology course worka nd then became the Lead technology teacher for my school
liz - If I taught General Psych class at the local Jr. College....How could I show student impact? Any ideas?
bruppert - if you went to a conference you must have gotten some sort of registration and performance conference form right? Did you go with an another teacher? You could have someone write a recommendation about what you presented to your faculty
Laura - I conducted a training in my District so I wrote about that
bruppert - Is there anyone in the class that could write that you taught this and used it in your class, how about some of your parents coming and sitting in on a class about the age of the students you teach
liz - How did you show student impact?
Laura - t remember to show how it impacted your classroom
bruppert - I would talk about how I could incorporate the concepts I taught into my class and had the students use the concepts
tmw1 - Is it better to work on one entry at a time or a little of all of them at once?
bruppert - Get ;your parents involved in your class too
Laura - my computer is having difficulty today Is anyone else?
liz - good question..I guess when you get stuck on one, go to another?
bruppert - let them audit it and then write about what you did to help your students.
tmw1 - My is slower than usual for some reason.
Laura - I worked on Entry 4 first but collected everything for the reading entry/literature
tmw1 - mine sorry
liz - Laura, what are you collecting?
bruppert - everyone does different things
Laura - I already completed everything, I'm actually a CIW
bruppert - well girls I have a cookout to go to, so good luck and talk to you later on another SAt. chat. good luck!!
liz - oh...you hear in Nov.?
Laura - I collected student samples from reading activities we completed during the year
liz - by
bruppert - I am waiting too Laura and I am so scared to know
tmw1 - Since I teach 1st grade, is it easier to use writing samples like a story that was written and went through the entire writing process?
Laura - They say to save for every child because you don't know who you will concentrate on until later in the process
tmw1 - thanks
bruppert - I teach first grade also
liz - 3rd here
bruppert - I did that too I saved for 6 kids and chose as I started working on them
bruppert - well see guys, good luck!!
Laura - Good luck bruppert...we will find out in Nov
tmw1 - But what type of writing samples did you collect?
Laura - everything...we made books...writing samples as you mentioned
tmw1 - Student books or class books?
tmw1 - Are you already certified or are you going for it now?
LN - individual student books that the students made while in guided reading groups with me (to continue)
LN - I'm a CIWwhere are you located
tmw1 - In South Carolina
LN - I teach first grade also or I should say taught first grade
LN - I'd be happy to guide you through the process...as someone else can learn from my mistakes
tmw1 - I would really appreciate it. I just sent you an invitation to join my IM list.
LN - do you conduct guided reading groups in your class
tmw1 - Yes.
LN - are you currently working with a cohort group or study partner
tmw1 - There are 11first grade teachers that are starting the process now together at my school.
LN - if you do guided rdg. what extension activities do you do with them ...those are the things I saved
LN - I didn't chose my students until Feb. (I think) I wanted to see growth or progress...but actually you don't always...
LN - when you pick your subjects...pick ones you have alot to write about...it makes it easier
tmw1 - I have 2 ESL students and 1 that doesn't speak any English at all. Do I have to include them in my entries?
LN - that's up to you...what other language do they speak
tmw1 - That probably sounds bad. Spanish
LN - I myself am bilingual (Spanish). No I know what you meant
LN - Actually in my new position this year I am a bilingual diagnostician
tmw1 - It is just that I am not good at Spanish at all and I don't want to make myself look bad. Do you know what I mean?
tmw1 - The parents of these students don't speak English either and some of them can not read at all.
LN - I test students to see a) do they need further testing...if so what language should their testing be conducted in and b) do they qualify for any special ed services from my test results
tmw1 - I am really scared about the whole process because this is only my 4th year of teaching. I was encouraged to go ahead with the NBC process while there were so many 1st grade teachers at my school going through it at once.
LN - I may choose one of them because you might have alot to write about but also you are wanting to show how creative you are in trying to improve this child's literacy skills so you are going to want to show proof of this. Your evidence will be demonstrated in the activities that you will use
tmw1 - I wish we had someone like that at our school. Right now the only other person at my school that can speak fluent spanish is one of the janitors.
LN - don't forget to include how yu connect with the family
tmw1 - any ideas for this?
tmw1 - I will probably be emailing you alot during this process. Do you mind?
LN - listen I have to go for now but please feel free to call me or write me through my e-mail. I'd be happy to help you if I can
tmw1 - I REALLY need the support.
tmw1 - thanks for everything.
tmw1 - bye
LN - When you e-mail me give me some backgrond on your students...levels and that sort but also feel free to bounce ideas off of me...I'd rather give yu my phone number on the e-mail and you can call
LN - Bye
tmw1 - sounds great
LN - don't be afraid you will be fine
LN - I remember clearly feeling the same way when I began...it is overwhelming...
