tmw1 - Hey! Anyone else in here?
ladye5813 - hi there
JanKWV - hey~ how's it going for everyone?
tmw1 - O.k. here and you?
JanKWV - i'm a wreck.. test in two weeks.. been writing all week.. but don't like anything I've done.... ready to do video this week. Hope things are better for you
tmw1 - I am just starting the process. I am working on entry 4 right now.
ladye5813 - i have a question about entry 2...if anyone can answer it
JanKWV - if you re like me.. you'll rewrite it a dozen times... What is your question Ladye?
tmw1 - I have been told to start entry 1 next but I don't have a clue as to where to begin.
ladye5813 - I teach first grade....and for the social studies on entry 2 .....I was going to use Friendship...I know it's a social skill but is it in social studies standards?
ladye5813 - I rewrote entry 4 ...3 or 4 times and it was hard to get it like I wanted it
JanKWV - You have to collect student work samples for entry 1. You will write about two students, during an eight week time period. It has been suggested to save literacy samples for more than two students, in case one moves away
tmw1 - I know what you mean.
tmw1 - What type of samples are best to use?
JanKWV - Social studies bothers me the most... science is fun, i just don't know about social studies. .. I have great morning meetings, I'm trying to design social studies around my morning meeting...
tmw1 - Is it going to hurt me a lot if I don't write up what professional organization I am a member of. I don't have proof of them.
ladye5813 - I have to run...see you later
tmw1 - I also can't decide if I should write up high, middle, or low students
JanKWV - Samples.. you have three options.. Option A - dictation/drawing/ brief writing samples. \
tmw1 - I heard that it was better to write up middle to low students so that I can show the growth
JanKWV - I'm collecting daily journal entries
JanKWV - It has been suggested to me to choose students that you think you can write the most about.. Hey Kelly
tmw1 - What about the professional organizations in entry 4. I have no proof of the ones I am a member of.
Kelly M - Hi! Sorry I'm late! I was working at our school's book fair - and we were closing it up!
JanKWV - TMWL - professional organizations - don't worry It is important to write about what you have done that IMPACTS your studnet learning
Kelly M - tmw1 - for those prof org., can you show how they impact your students? If so, get someone to document what you do with your kids because of that organization...
tmw1 - good that had me worried.
Kelly M - When are your portfolio 'due' dates?
JanKWV - mine is Feb 15th.. I can't seem to get anyting completed
Kelly M - Don't worry about 'completed'.....try to get some writing down for all of them. You'll re-write them/edit them so many times that you won't believe it!
Kelly M - Jan - have you already taken your AC?
JanKWV - Should I include parent letters/note I have received about student progress for entry 1?
Kelly M - Which is Entry 1? I get the numbers confused since they changed them....
JanKWV - literacy.. student work samples...
Kelly M - but I'm guessing that the answer is no, because in those entries your artifacts are all student work samples and instructional pieces...not notes from parents....
JanKWV - I have received some notes from parents about their child's literacy progress that were very complimentary
JanKWV - ok
Kelly M - Jan - for literacy you want to write about the relationship you develop with the parent so that the child benefits ... but you can just write about it without documenting it.
Kelly M - Jan - please do re-read the directions, though, because I haven't actually 'done' these newer versions of the portfolio so the directions aren't so ingrained in my head. I just don't think that there is a place where they ask for parent letters in that entry.
Kelly M - Hi liz - welcome!
JanKWV - i have copied those directions many times.. and I still find them very confusing
tmw1 - Hey Liz!
tmw1 - My portfolio isn't due until April 15th so I am really just getting started.
tmw1 - Hey Courtney!
Kelly M - Hi Courtney - how are you today?
Courtney - good and you
liz - I have a ? about ss...when integrating the arts, can it be one lesson or are the arts to be infused throughout the unit?
JanKWV - Science has been lots of fun.. I'm confident about this entry. Social studies really has mean thrown for a loop
Kelly M - Jan - take them one step at a time. I think that's the way that they start to become more clear. And ask questions along the way!
liz - How has science been fun?
JanKWV - Good question liz.. and how much of each has to go in your video...
tmw1 - This is a silly question, but the video tapes can only be 15 minutes right?
Cathy M. - Hi all. I have some questions about my videoptape
liz - yes 15 min.
Cathy M. - This has been a very nervewracking 2 months
tmw1 - Hey Cathy!
liz - you got that right!!
JanKWV - My kindergarten kids have just blossomed using inquiry science.
Kelly M - liz - the arts are to be an intregal part...something that makes the learning of the unit deeper. They do NOT want just a fluff art project thrown in. It really needs to do with something that will enhance the learning that the children end up with about whatever the SS topic is.
Kelly M - Hi Cathy - how are you today?
Cathy M. - hi tmw
tmw1 - Then how can I make sure that my tape is only 15 minutes without editing it? I know my lesson will be longer.
Cathy M. - Fine, starting to get cold here in Michigan. Brrrrrr
JanKWV - Kelly.. so in the ss video, I know you want to show how the kids relate to one another as a commuity, but should the video also include the arts?
liz - I thought so kelly...thanks for the info
Cathy M. - About what I wear for the videotape, any suggestions?
liz - but if you infuse several different arts activities, do you write goals and objectives for all?
Kelly M - tmw1 - tape the whole lesson (all of the lessons, if you can!) and then watch them very carefully. You'll want to cut down to a 15 min segment that shows the best for what it has asked you to show. You need the part that gives you the most to write about....which may not necessarily be the 'best' part of the video (like where the kids are perfect or something!...as if that ever happens!).
Cathy M. - i want to wear either a suit with a long jacket. or capris with kitten heels
Kelly M - but back to the editing question...it isn't 'editing' to cut it at a 15 min segment. those 15 min are uninterrupted. Does that make sense?
Cathy M. - I bought T sjirts for the kids to wear. They say. "We love our teacher" Cute touch, i think
Kelly M - Jan - yes - you do want to be able to discuss in your writing just how the kids are showing the community you have developed within your classroom. As to the arts being in it...please check the directions carefully. I'm not sure about an answer to that one. But it should tell you in the directions.
tmw1 - I know I sound stupid, but how can I only put 15 minutes on a tape for them? Do you mean like when I go to transfer the video from my camera to a tape, only record the 15 minutes on the tape that I want them to see?
Kelly M - Cathy - you should be able to wear whatever you want!....dressing appropriately, of course!
Kelly M - Hey there bruppert! How are you?
bruppert - Hey everyone , how are you all doing?
Cathy M. - I am trying to remember not to wear this tummy top with a gold chain. I really love the look
tmw1 - Hey bruppert!
bruppert - Doing fine and thanks to you, Kelly!!
Cathy M. - Hi bruppert. How are you? A good week I hope
Kelly M - tmw - It's not stupid! We're all learning with this process! Yes, when you go to make a copy you start the copy at the exact point you want to, and then you stop it at the end of the 15 minutes (or 14, or whatever!)...just not longer!
Cathy M. - tmw, editing studios can cut and clip
bruppert - Every week is a good week just as is every day is a good day. I say my day is "Groovey!"
JanKWV - what's an editiing studio cathy?
Kelly M - bruppert - LOL...I always answer with "swell".
Cathy M. - bruppert, you sound like fun. I am too ( since the Zoloft started to kick in)
bruppert - What is everyone working on?
tmw1 - Gotcha! I understand now.
bruppert - Try the "Groovey" response and see the looks you get, you will enjoy the laughs, Kelly!!
Cathy M. - An editing studio can help with the taping. I went to one in Lanxing to check out prices. Like if the camera catches a kid picking his nose, they can edit it out
Kelly M - If you have two VCRs you can do it. Just run the tape to the part where you want to start, put in the other tape, hit record, and go for 15 minutes. Then stop it. The 2nd tape should have only the 15 minutes you want on it. Be sure to make a copy of that one, too!...just to have as a backup!
Kelly M - Hi Pat - welcome!
tmw1 - RIght now I almost finished writing up entry 4. I am fixing to start on the literact entry.
liz - I missed the answer to my ? about ss and the arts..do I have to include each goal and objective for all of the arts I do??
Cathy M. - Kelly, I want my tape to look professional
bruppert - I do think I am fun and I love my job!! doing this National Board stuff was hard work yet right up my alley.
JanKWV - That's what I thought you meant.. but I thought I read somewhere in the directions that the videos were to be unedited
tmw1 - Hey Pat!
liz - Is Pat on?
Kelly M - Cathy - you can't edit the kid picking his nose out. Any editing will disqualify your tape.
Cathy M. - Kelly, when it is done professionally, no one will know.
tmw1 - How much of your class has to be in the video?
Kelly M - Cathy - they're not looking for professional. The people who will be scoring it are all EC teachers. They know what EC classrooms look like!...and how kids this age pick their noses!
bruppert - For ss and art -- in the video you just do 15 min of uninterrupeted taping . trying to show art, community and ss.
Pat - Yes, Pat is on. Hi Liz!
Cathy M. - That's why you pay a studio to do it, just like in the movies
JanKWV - that dosen't sound "Fair and ethical"
liz - Hi Pat
Cathy M. - I want my video to be used in training classes, so it's gotta look great
Kelly M - Cathy - It certainly is up to you. But I wouldn't want to take that chance. After working so hard on everything else, why risk it? You don't lose anything by leaving it in!...they don't deduct points.
bruppert - When I did my video , it went well but I had to do it several times to get the kids to act naturally and all.
JanKWV - Cathy, what are training classes?
Cathy M. - jan, i guess in some small state like WVa they probably donot have editing studios. Can you travel to Washington.
Kelly M - liz - let's try to go back to your question! Can you ask it one more time!
Pat - Hi Liz
Cathy M. - The national Boards uses some of the videos for training teachers. You have to sign a release form
JanKWV - I was going to have a student from our vocational school who is taking broadcasting to do my taping.. but through the email group it was suggested to me not to use a professional....
Kelly M - Cathy - they use tapes that have all that stuff still in them! Those are not tapes that have been edited!
liz - Yes....when integrating ss and the arts I now understand that one needs to integrate, not just do one activity...do you write goals and objectives for each??
JanKWV - so where can one see these training videos.. You're right, I am in rural wv.. and I am very LOST
Cathy M. - A kid from a vocational school?? God it will look like Funniest Home videos!!!
Kelly M - liz - I think you have to write at least one art goal. But check the directions.....they change over time!
liz - Kelly any insights into this?
Cathy M. - Jan, the training videos are sold to teacher colleges, teacher mentoring programs, etc
Pat - Good question, Liz. I'm not sure of the answer. Anyone know?
Cathy M. - Can you hire a professional videographer who would be willing to travel?
bruppert - You answer the goals and objectives in your write up and reflection if I remember correctly
JanKWV - so if you don't have any of these in your area,.. can you buy them to see?
liz - so,,,write one art goal but also integrate aother arts into the portfolio?
Kelly M - Jan - those videos are shows sometimes at NBPTS training sessions...like Facilitator's Institutes, etc. Jan - you can have anybody do your taping - or just put the camera up on a tripod and let 'er rip! I would seriously warn you against having anything edited out. It would automatically disqualify you - and for no purpose. It is not to your advantage to do it.....so why risk it?
tmw1 - I was just going to get the teacher next to me to tape my lesson. Is that bad?
Cathy M. - Yes. my colleage sold her video to a source called Good Apple for teacher training for language arts. it is a course that meets in large cities for professional development
liz - Pat, hwat questions do you have?
tmw1 - If that didn't work I was just going to use a tripod.
bruppert - most of the folks in my area did the video taping for each other. It worked out great. We did not use any professional ones at all.
liz - **what
JanKWV - This is what bothers me about me about this whole NB process. Some people have facilitators, training sessions.. mentors.. and some of us have just a cd with 236 pages of directions....
liz - that is what we are doing....at times the equipment doesn't cooperate
bruppert - Jan, that is why you have us here!!
Kelly M - liz - I think you're right about writing one goal and integrating the others....but please do check the directions carefully - because, like I said, the directions change over time.
tmw1 - There isn't any one professional around where I live to get to do it anyway. I live in a small rural town in SC.
Cathy M. - Jan, my school district pays an extra $6000 each year if we pass the Boards. That's why we all spend big bucks to pass
Kelly M - NBPTS doesn't want 'professional'....they want to see your classroom and teaching!
tmw1 - I am more like you Jan. I do have 10 other 1st grade teachers at my school who are also in the process with me.
JanKWV - My state pays $2500... I am doing this to be a better teacher... not for the money, that's for sure
Cathy M. - That is $6000 for each year after that too. In six years, that little bundle will pay for a Lexus
bruppert - The professional I am talking about is a person who does video taping for a living, we jsut had our teacher friends tape and it was so natural for the kids to have someone familiar in there too
Cathy M. - Hi Jo, welcome!!!
liz - ???about the science portfolio....the video indicates directions for total goup...what does that mean exactly? Can I have the children work in small groups, but tape the entire class??
Kelly M - Cathy - what I'm trying to tell you is that spending those big bucks does not improve your chance of certifying. Scorers are trained to look for the evidence. That's it. They couldn't care less about pretty....about fluff....about whether it is bulleted or writing in beautiful paragraphs. There is NO place in the scoring process that you earn more points for any of that.
Kelly M - Hi Jo - welcome!
Pat - Question--If your portfolio is due on March 15, when is the last possible day I could sit for the assessments?
liz - Kelly, any insights into that science??
Cathy M. - Scorers can be definitely influenced by a professional job.
tmw1 - My state gives $7500 a year for 10 years.
Kelly M - Liz - yes, you can. You have to explain in your write-up where everybody is, and how each child will get this same learning opportunity, but that this is the way you do your science inquiries...in small groups.
liz - Great question Pat!!
Cathy M. - RememberElle Wood's video to get into Harvard?
JanKWV - I hope your right Kelly...
liz - twml, what state do you live in
Kelly M - Cathy - I wouldn't count on that. They are VERY well trained to look for the evidence. Period. THey couldn't care less who did your video.
tmw1 - South Carolina
bruppert - Turst Kelly you guys she knows what she is talking about for REAL!
Cathy M. - Hi viv, haven't I talked to you before in here?
JanKWV - If Cathy's right, I amight as well quit now
bruppert - Trust, sorry for the typo error!
Kelly M - Pat - those dates are crazy now. It all depends on when NBPTS received all of your paperwork and/or money. Call them to check for your setup with them.
Cathy M. - Jan, keep going. I am sure you will do fine!!!
Kelly M - Jan - trust me, I'm right about this one. I tell you when I am not sure!
viv - Hi I am so late. Have a question about how to narrow down my lit entry. It was 20 pages Yikes! I just don't know what to cut. Shoule I just list the daily routines and materials that supported her lit and not elaborate or choose the ones that helpe dher most and ellaborate on them?
Kelly M - Hi viv - welcome!
Pat - Thanks, Kelly for the answer regarding testing dates.
tmw1 - Hello viv!
Kelly M - Jan - please don't quit now! You've got lots of support here!
viv - hey everyone
liz - yes, this ring is great...when I'm frustrated with a minor question..it will be answered!!
JanKWV - Thanks Kelly.. it's just all so ambiquitious(SP)
bruppert - Hey guys you have the know how to do this, and the dedication, this group will support you. Don't give up ever!
Cathy M. - I agree, Jan, just keep plugging awys. try to avoid a vocational student to do the video. He will maybe be drunk and the camera may jiggle or he will forget to turn it on!
Cathy M. - Liz, ring?
Pat - Liz, do you think you are clear about the science questu=ion you asked?
Kelly M - viv - you need to list the daily routines - and really point out how they help the chosen student. You want to show how what you do is consistent with what you say the student needs.
liz - ?? about literacy..we have to discuss listening, writing, speaking and reading...any ideas about how to assess speaking and listening?
viv - I have matched up the activites and strats to the original questions and he questions to the goal. I thought this entry would be a breeze for me, but itis not. Excuse typos
JanKWV - Cathy.. you sure have a narrow minded view.. You might be surprised at the ed vocational schools...
Kelly M - Jan - I know it seems that way....but it will become more and more clear as you work with it more and more!
liz - yes, Pat, I understand it now (I think)
tmw1 - I'm not sure if I saw the answer to my ? earlier, how much of my class has to be in the video?
liz - I agree viv...very confusing
Kelly M - liz - how do you assess it in your classroom? Some people use formal assessments - even for those....but most of us use more informal ones, I think.
viv - Would you say that all descriptions should be brief, but how it impacted students longer?
liz - informal??
Pat - Liz, how about your social studies and art question-- Is it clear to you now?
liz - yes, thanks
Kelly M - viv - YES.....the description is not the most important part. It should be clear...but not lengthy...
tmw1 - I have 1 student that I prefer not to be in it. He doesn't speak ANY english.
liz - Integrate as much of the arts as you an into yor unit....(ugh)
Cathy M. - Gott run The dixie Chicks are on CMT. Natalie is my fave. Bye and good luck to all you aspiring NB teachers
viv - Liz, I would get an oral language checklist from your speech teacher. Your reading program should have one. It will have things like speaks in complete sentences, uses vocabulary appropriate for age, listens for a variety of purposes and on and on and on. You can observe as hey roleplay, are in a puppet center, during cooperative groups, show and tell.....
Cathy M. - tmw, send him out of the room on a long errand. Then lock the door
Kelly M - tmw1 - If you're talking about science, I think you can do small group ... but be sure to tell where the other kids are and when each will get the same opportunity. It can't be an arrangement you just set up for this......where are the other kids? They need to be doing your routine....this needs to be about how you normally do it. Justify what you do. That's what they want to see.
liz - Kelly, do you have any ideas for informal assessment for speaking and listening??
viv - Any last minute how to narrow it down tips?
Kelly M - tmw1 - you can't exclude him for that.....you dont' exclude him other times, right? Just explain the difficulty and how you handle it. That's true of all of our classrooms!
liz - oh thanks viv...good ideas
bruppert - WEll I have to go-- you all have a good week and good luck working on your work. See ya !
viv - Liz, I am just a candidate, always check with someone else
bruppert - Bye Kelly , I was sorry to hear you would not be coming in my neck of the woods soon.
Kelly M - You need to explain where your kids are. If you have made special arrangements just for this, trust me, things like that show through in your writeup and the scorers sense it. I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize all of the hard work I put into my portfolios! Those shortcuts, etc. don't do anything to enhance your chances. We all have difficult children. So show them, and what you do with them. If you ARE an accomplished teacher, you deal with things and move forward!
liz - Kelly, and Pat, what do you think of Viv's ideas?
bruppert - Keep me posted too!! KNow you will have fun in CA. Jake is g oing to CA. the last week of OCt.
tmw1 - He is very hard to work with in class because I do not speak Spanish. I have to use 2 other students that speak a little english and spanish to translate for me.
Kelly M - I think viv's suggestions are right on!
bruppert - tmwl, That is perfect and it shows you make use of all of your students, show it off and enhance your teaching with him.
Kelly M - tmw - but just state it like it is! That gives you LOTS to reflect on...about how you deal with such a problem, and maybe ideas about what you're thinking about to improve the situation for both of you!
Pat - Liz, viv has made some great suggestions.
bruppert - Bye, !!
Kelly M - Bye bruppert! I'm sorry I'm not coming there, too! If they bring me again, I'll let you know. Otherwise, I'll see you next November when the NBCT conference is there again!
liz - Yes, I plan on asking my speech teacher for a checklist like that....
Kelly M - Also, SAY that you got that assessment from a colleague...you consulted with her about that child, etc. That shows parts of the standards, too!
viv - Have a restful day and pray that I can figure out how to cut out seven page!!!! LOL
liz - ok Kelly...Pat did you catch that?
tmw1 - It want make me look stupid when I have to keep saying student a will you tell student b what I just said and show him what I mean?
Kelly M - oops...I wanted to tell viv to ask on the ring. Folks have lots of great ideas for cutting wording down!
Kelly M - Liz - what?
Pat - Great suggestion
tmw1 - won't sorry for the typo
liz - about noting that I went to a colleague
Kelly M - tmw - I don't think so at all! You have to contend with whatever situation you have been put in. Accomplished teachers keep at it until it works!
Kelly M - liz - yes - definitely note that you went to a colleage!
tmw1 - You are right I know, I just get so frustrated. I hate having the language barrier because I feel as if he is a very bright child inside.
tmw1 - And I can't get to it because of the language situation
tmw1 - I guess sending him out would be the easy way out.
Kelly M - tmw - see? You ARE working at making the situation better! And it WILL get better! Our little ones pick up our language SO quickly! Just keep talking to the child! He'll get it!
tmw1 - I have asked my principal to order me an adult spanish english dictionary and one for my students to use also.
Kelly M - I would say SHOW YOUR STUFF! Show how you are working with him and making him feel a part of the classroom....and making use of the resources (the other children!) to help too! That also boasts about the sense of community you have developed! You have children helping children - respectfully! That's terrific!
tmw1 - maybe that will help
liz - ?? about science video...again the directions say total group...is it okay to go from group to group facilitating with the microphone and camera rather that virewing the entire class at their stations?
liz - is that what they want??
Kelly M - tmw - check out the children's ones, too.......There are several great ones...that are sort of pictionaries. I have several of them...I think one is put out by Scholastic. One is a Suess one, I think....
Kelly M - liz - you are fine with that format.
tmw1 - That's what I meant for the students.
liz - thanks
Kelly M - tmw - there are several. Get one! What a great way to have the kids help each other and learn from each other!
liz - Pat, what is your most pressing ? at this time?
tmw1 - Well, I need to run. Hope everyone has a great week. Talk to everyone next week. My other students are so eager to learn spanish.
liz - Kelly sems to really know her stuff
Kelly M - liz - LOL...it's because I've been around this process so long!
liz - when did you certify?
Pat - Liz, I don't think I have any pressing questions at this time. Just need to get down to it!
liz - Yes, and it is an exhausting journey...but I have good company along the way
Kelly M - actually, I just certified a year ago. But I've been around the process since it started....started the EC-GEn pilot but had to quit (family situation), etc. Started the EC-GEN mailring almost 4 years ago...so most questions have been asked before at least once or twice!
liz - I thought you were the leader of this ring...very helpful...do you have to keep everyone focused??
Kelly M - Well, this is a great place for questions....as is the mailring. It's a GREAT support system!
liz - Most definately....See you next Saturday. Have a good week everyone!!
Kelly M - I have lots of help! Many of the folks who certify stay on the ring to help others. You know, it's Oprah's "pass it on" theory! Works great!
Kelly M - Jan - are you still here?
