Susan (NC) - OK- how are you doing?
sue - stressing, waiting for scores to be announced LOL!
Susan (NC) - Me too! small world!
sue - have you set up your information page yet?
Susan (NC) - Yes I did..........but that last button whoa..........when can we know?
Susan (NC) - Where are you Sue?
sue - my changed. Instead of ready to test, it said test recieved from prometrics
sue - sometime after 11/16 is what I heard
sue - new orleans
Susan (NC) - I was in New Orleans a million years ago (1975) attended a boat show in a huge building?
sue - rivergate
ginger - hi, sue and susan
sue - or was it the convention center?
ginger - let me go change my color
sue - hey ginger- are you a CIW, NBCT or newbie>
Susan (NC) - Can't remember what the name was? Probably the convention center-
ginger - ciw, and a nervous one
Susan (NC) - Hey ginger!
sue - ginger- why?
ginger - hi!
sue - it's over and done with. there's nothing to be nervous about.
sue - the scores are in we just don't have them
ginger - nervous because i just want it to be over
Susan (NC) - The waiting this time is harder than last year since I'm a "banker"-
ginger - oh, susan, i haven't even done anything to prepare if i have to redo a couple of parts
Susan (NC) - I don't think it will ever be OVER!!!
Susan (NC) - I hope you don't..........
ginger - do either of you two use 4 blocks in your room?
sue - susan- were you very close? I had a friend who was off by 2 points!
sue - oops that sounded very rude, sorry
Susan (NC) - I know what 4 blocks is and if I ever get a room back (I'm a k-5 reading teacher) I want to use it.
Susan (NC) - I needed more than 2 points!!
ginger - i have sooo many non readers in second grade, and i am trying so hard to help
sue - ginger- no I do an ecclectic mix within the High/Scope framework
ginger - all i can think of is that if we could just get the kids when they were 3 years old for preschool and a full day k, maybe it would help
Susan (NC) - Welcome Liz & Donna!
sue - ginger-we have 65% of our 2nd graders reading below level
ginger - oh, sue where do you teach?
sue - suburb of new orleans, a title I school 98.3% free lunch
liz - hi...those of you that are bankers, what advice aan you give us newbies?
Donna - Hi everyone. What's the discussion about?
sue - some of my parents don't read past the 5th grade level!
sue - liz- I'm a CIW. Get organized!!!!
Joan Dom. - Then how do the kids pass anything, Sue?
ginger - i have been teaching 20 years, and i know that what i do is good, but i still can't "fix" the problem, and our state scores are so low that my district is having trouble under the new No Child Left Behind policy
liz - meaning??
sue - donna- are you a newbie, too?
Susan (NC) - I'm at a Title 1 school too but our free lunch count is not that high sue-
Donna - No, I'm an EC Gen
ginger - we're brainstorming or venting about low readers
sue - joan- some barely get by, a lot of unidentifed speced
Joan Dom. - I wish i taught at a school with fewer LD kids and more GT kids
ginger - if you live in a low ses area, and your scores are not high enough, the govt steps in and reduces your title one funding!!!
sue - liz- work on more than one entry at a time. collect all the documentation you need for entry 4. keep portfolio samples on more than 2 kids
Susan (NC) - We use Accelerated Reader and have smaller reading groups with 2 Title 1 teachers (which I am one)
ginger - like that would help!
sue - we showed growth but we're still low
Joan Dom. - Most of my kids just watch TV at home and they do not read
ginger - we are getting Accelerated Reader organized in our school library, and I am hoping it will make a difference
liz - yes, I feel like I am pretty organized. I do wonder how carefully look at the video?
Joan Dom. - Even our school media center recommends movies over books
liz - I heard they look at it only once so everything must be noticed
Donna - I agree with working on more than one entry at a time. It kind of clears your brain from one entry to the next.
sue - joan- read the latest research on low literacy home enviornments and reading achievement
ginger - we have an after school program for academic help, but it only can help 100 kids and we have 400 applications
Susan (NC) - Our school has always scored higher than the state avg. but our sp. ed (exceptional children) score needs to be improved.
Joan Dom. - liz, did you have professional help with the video?
ginger - Joan, are you kidding??? Movies over books?
liz - no. I hadd our media Specialist doi it
sue - liz- I'm not sure but remember the mantra- clear, concise and convincing!
liz - should i have had a pro??
Joan Dom. - Ginger, really. Most of the new purchases are all vidoes
Joan Dom. - Liz, I am going to hire a videographer from NYC. I live in NJ. it will only cost $700
sue - liz- I had the other PK teacher. It helps to have someone who knows you well and can anticipate your moves
Susan (NC) - I video taped all the time..........put the camera on a tri pod and hoped for the best!
ginger - i ended up just turning on the camera, and letting it go, after having had tons of "professional" help
ginger - Joan, where in NJ do you teach?
liz - good grief....I cant hire someone $$$$$
Joan Dom. - Susan, sorry but it will look very amateur like a kid video taped it
ginger - hi, kim!
Donna - Put the video on a tripod or have someone record the action. Save the $700 when you celebrate certification!
kim - hi
Joan Dom. - Kearney
sue - joan- he/she might miss an important moment if they don't know you.
ginger - liz, most of the people do NOT pay someone
Joan Dom. - Most people here do but they do not tell anyone
Joan Dom. - Hi kim
ginger - i even ended up using my friend's home camcoreder rather than the expensive stuff we had at school
Donna - Where are you from Joan?
kim - hi, i wasn't thinking of hiring anyone for my video,
Joan Dom. - NJ
ginger - it doesn't have to be a professionally done tape, just has to show what they want to see
Joan Dom. - Where are you guys all from?
sue - here's an example, my friend knew I was trying to address the needs of my speech child when I leaned into him. Since she knew he spoke in a low voice, she automatically came in closer and caught a great conversation!
liz - good insights....thanks....my comments are simply facilitating....is that ok??
Susan (NC) - It helps having a lot of lessons on tape; when the writing begins - the video is a good reminder of who said what-
sue - kim- get a colleague to do it
ginger - yes, liz, you need to make sure that your face is on the video occasionally so they know its you, and you guide them when you need to
sue - susan- I have 5 copies of the lessons I sent in!!
ginger - i taped about 5 times before i got one i liked
kim - i'm trying to work out those details, i'm wondering how hard is it to show math and science in one 15 minute clip ...
Joan Dom. - Also, it helps to have your hair and makeup done professionally
liz - I'm going to measure and look at things in a microscope
sue - kim-think of your avg lesson and then brainstorm ways you automatically include math in a lesson
ginger - my video showed the math in front of the kids as they worked at their table. It was a graph.
Joan Dom. - One woman at my school looked like a frump in hers.
ginger - Joan, they really don't care if you look like a frump!
kim - sue, does the video need to show all -- inquiry, math, science, questioning/ discussion?
Joan Dom. - And her elbows looked all dry in the closeup. She could have used some Eucerin cream, We all laghed
tmw1 - Hello everyone!
Joan Dom. - Ginger, don't fool yourself. of course, they do
Joan Dom. - hi tmw
liz - too funny
sue - joan- I sure hope that's not how it's scored!!! I had paint smears on my jeans from the art center and dirt on my shirt where one of the kids handed me their worm LOL!
ginger - Joan, I really think you need to talk to others who have made the grade!
Kelly M - Hi everybody! Sorry I'm late!
ginger - Hey, mom!
liz - good , you wore jeans, thats what I was going to do
Joan Dom. - ginger, I have. Lots of my friends have passed
sue - kim--I'm a CIW but I feel it should shoe all of it.
kim - what i look like is the least of my worries right now
Susan (NC) - Hi Kelly-
sue - liz- I teach Pre-K and do an hr a day outside time
ginger - kelly, please address the idea whether or not NBPTS cares about what you look like on your video
tmw1 - I am fixing to begin the literacy entry and really don 't know where to begin. Having trouble starting.
Joan Dom. - We can't even wear jeans to school. I would die first before wearing them in the most important video of my life ( next to me wedding video)
ginger - tmwl, that's the entry i waited the longest on
sue - kelly- joan is scaring me!! she said the videos are scored on how we look ie- hair and makeup!
liz - yes kelly..........please respond to this!!
Kelly M - LOL...there is not a place on the scorer sheet that has anything to do with that! They are looking for evidence that you are meeting the standards. Period. You get points for that. No points for anything else!
sue - If that's the case I'm in big trouble!!!
ginger - tmwl, have you collected a lot of samples?
Joan Dom. - Oh for goodness sake, sue. Can't you just put on makeup and look pretty for once
Susan (NC) - tmw1- you must be from the south! My kids are always "fixing" to do this or that!
ginger - excuse me, Joan?
tmw1 - Is it better to do the ss/arts or the science/math?
Kelly M - Joan - I'm afraid that 'looking pretty' is not a part of any standard. This is all about being an accomplished teacher. Period. They couldn't care less if you have on makeup.
tmw1 - I am from South Carolina. Is that good or bad?
Joan Dom. - Like mascara, cheek color, nice hairstyle. No jeans with worm dirt
liz - I started with ss/arts because I knoew that one ande could finish at a fast pace
ginger - oh, no i wasnt' discouraging you from doing the literacy, i just found it the hardest one to put together.
sue - joan-I'm a CIW. I had on makeup but the video showed reality. Working with 4 yr olds, on the floor and outside is not condusive to high fashion!
Joan Dom. - No wonder parents have such a poor perception of teachers
ginger - sue, i have no idea why joan is trashing you right now, but real teaching can be done in any clothing, and I would be proud to have a kid give me a worm!!!
tmw1 - I have started collecting sample. I just tend to keep looking for ss and science lessons.
Susan (NC) - tmw1- start on all of them.........when you get stuck - move on to another. I got to hung up on trying to finish 1 before I started another entry........big mistake in my opinion.
Kelly M - Joan - parents want to know that their child is learning. Are you a parent? If so, would you want your child to have a teacher who looked good, or one who taught the child something?
kim - tmwl, i'm thinking of saving literacy for last -- right now i'm saving work samples but that's all.. i'm working on science/math
Joan Dom. - why at back to school night for my daughter, I kept staring at her teachers toe nails. They definitely needed trimming
sue - tmw1- do you have your samples yet? Have you done your assessment?
sue - ginger- thanks! I'm not stressing over it.
ginger - Sorry, but I have to back out of this clothing part of the conversation before I get really upset.
Joan Dom. - Kelly, I want a well groomed teacher. Not some fat ugly frump who is just tinerested in educatio buzzwords
tmw1 - I am just beginning all of it. I haven't even received my box yet. They said that I should get it in the next 2-4 weeks.
Kelly M - I think we should focus on what this chat is scheduled for....and that is for discussion/questions about the EC-GEN process.
liz - lol
Joan Dom. - okay good idea
ginger - great, tmwl, start saving samples of several students work in a variety of settings, maybe 6 kids
liz - yes, I agree
sue - tmw1- then I would start collecting for the literacy and writing your entry 4.
Susan (NC) - tmw1- just keep rereading all the directions & standards on the NBPTS site - when the box comes, you'll be ready!!
kim - any suggestions on which kids to save work on, average, above average? special needs?
tmw1 - I am almost finished entry 4 already. Just have to get all of the documentation together and do my reflection.
liz - for literacy, I am still confused about how to show all the areas of listening, speaking reading and writing (evidence)
ginger - i love what aggie said on the ring today. She said she asks the kids every day what do they wonder about and writes those things down. That would be a great way to begin the wondering process for science
Joan Dom. - Does it come by federal Express of UPS?
ginger - developing wonder would be a good project for all of us to start
sue - here's some advice. Save samples on at least 5 kids. I had 2 move in the middle of the process
Kelly M - Ginger - That would also be a great thing to use for the oral part of literacy!
tmw1 - I already downloaded the directions and standards and printed them. They are really confusing.
Susan (NC) - good advice sue!
Joan Dom. - I am only keeping the GT writing samples
sue - liz- do you do anecdotal notes?
liz - GT?
kim - tmwl, i think you've got a really great start
Joan Dom. - Gifted abd talented students
ginger - liz, you might want to turn on a tape recorder when you have discussions, to catch the kids speaking
liz - meaning? Obserfvations of the students?
Joan Dom. - Ginger, that is illegal
Susan (NC) - very confusing...........trust me, you need to read them over many, many times and still ask for the advice of the guru's. We are here to help you!
sue - liz- daily notes on what children do in their work centers/areas
tmw1 - I just don't want to get behind and be pushing to get it finished at the last minute.
ginger - Kelly?
Joan Dom. - Be sure to get a signed permission form from the parents
liz - oh,,,,godd idea
Kelly M - Of course taping your kids is NOT illegal. You have already gotten written permission from the parents to tape them to do this process!
ginger - Joan, I don't publish the recordings, i use them to reflect on, to capture how they use oral language
sue - I disagree. I tape my kids doing story dictations all the time
Joan Dom. - Nothing like walking on a legal tightrope
sue - joan- where are you in the process?
liz - For the work samples.....
ginger - ok, Joan....have a great day, and I hope you find some happiness in your life!
ginger - bye for now
sue - liz- what grade are you?
Kelly M - Bye Ginger!
liz - 3rd
Joan Dom. - She must be having her period or something. what a nut!
sue - liz- oh... what about porfolios?
liz - sue what grade are you
sue - I'm pre-K, four year olds
sue - tmw1- what grade?
liz - I guess i'm confused about that entry...shall I look at one weakness, focus on that and show improvement in the samples??
Joan Dom. - I used to work with a woman just like that. No husband, no life.
tmw1 - I teach first. Right now I only have 13 students. 2 moved away last week.
liz - what if the child show many weaknesses. shall I pick one?
sue - this is what I did. Please bear in mind I'm a CIW and Pre-K so it's a little different.
liz - sue?
Kelly M - Hi Kathy - how are you today?
tmw1 - One of my students doesn't speak ANY english. He has just learned to say my name.
tmw1 - Hey Kathy!
liz - cool diversity
sue - I looked at the initial screening to see what the areas needed improvement. I collected work samples of their literacy growth.
Kathy - I'm doing fine. I am a CIW. Just wondering if any newbies needed some cheering on.
liz - what samples did you include in the entry?
Kelly M - liz - you don't have to show improvement. You have to show that you assessed the child and that drove your instruction....and that you did everything possible to help the child's parents help from home, etc. Improvement is nice, but not the whole picture!
tmw1 - I definately do! I am getting very stressed.
liz - good...assessment drivingthe instructin
kim - I do, too, i've put everything away for 3 days,, need to get back
tmw1 - So is it better to use low, middle, or high students?
sue - liz- it varied with the child selected. But as part of my program, I collect an initial drawing and writing sample and monthly story dictations
Kathy - I can't believe a year has gone by so fast. My best advice is to start writing even if you don't think it is making sense. I procrastinated too much because I was unsure if I was doing it right.
sue - don't forget the parents! Even if there is no participation, you have to prove that you tried
sue - I wrote and wrote and wrote and wrote.........
liz - I was going to use a writing in response to what I've read, a math problem solver and a piece on details from writing..am I on the right track?
sue - I went through 2 cases of paper (not reams) and at least 10 ink cartridges!!!
kim - i've go a mishmash of samples, should i focus on one area of writing?
Kelly M - tmw1 - I would suggest saving from kids from all three categories. In the end two will stick out that you will really want to feature!
liz - yes, I'm on that right now...It is time/life consuming!!
tmw1 - I have a student that I was considering using. She is VERY low. Knows few sounds, little parent participation. Would she be a good one?
sue - is there one sample that can give you information on all areas?-- maybe a retelling
sue - tmw1- it's your call.
sue - I had one early reader and a selectively mute child
Kelly M - And YES...do save all kinds of writing. It's great to show that you use writing in so many ways. The important thing is to be able to analyze those writing samples...and have that drive your instruction with that child.
kim - i like the retelling idea - then the next sample, should it also be a retelling to show growth? or something else?
liz - so my sample of work needs to address the 4 areas?
sue - be sure to check the files and sources for the stages of writing and spelling for your analysis, too
sue - liz- no. but some can address more than one
liz - yess, that makes sense
Kathy - I kept samples on most everyone. I had a child who was moving. I wanted her new school to know where she was in literacy. She ended up not moving and I was amazed at how much I learned from her family by involving them in what they could do to help her. They just kept asking for ideas. Their is a sample of literacy questions to get you started in the portfolio section. It is by the old portfolio but it helped me tremendously.
Kelly M - liz - your writing definitely needs to address all of those areas. You have your work samples to back up your writing. Obviously you can't show the oral with the samples...but with writing you can address the child's literacy development...how he/she spells, the level of competency with phonemic awareness/phonics/etc.
sue - I'm a CIW. My samples were not of the same thing but showed growth
sue - kelly- I used the words used by the students in the dictation and the direct quotes from anecdotal notes to show growth in language skills
liz - sue, did the growth show in one area
sue - hope I was on the right track!
liz - thank Kelly M....you always have such sound answers
sue - liz- in my case the growth was across all areas.
Kelly M - Hi again Ginger - glad to see you back again!
ginger - hey, mom\
sue - hey ginger
Kelly M - sue - you're absolutely right! Thanks for pointing that out!
tmw1 - Hey ginger!
liz - hi Ginger
ginger - thanks for your encouragement on the ring yesterday
Susan (NC) - sue, I know what you mean........this waiting is getting harder by the day. I have been working on grants to fill up my "worry time"
ginger - hi again, sue
ginger - hi, liz, you sound like you're working hard
sue - susan- did you try for the 2.5 million early reading first grant?
tmw1 - Are there any books that I can get that will help with this process?
Kelly M - liz - LOL...not always! But I have learned lots from hanging around such great teachers for so long!
Susan (NC) - ginger, glad you are back - I was afraid that weirdo scared you off.
ginger - sue, what is that???? where can i learn about that?
liz - yes, since August...every now and then I do get burned out
sue - tmw- on the literacy entry or in general?
ginger - i just have found that in my life there is so much that is precious that i have no time for nonsense
tmw1 - Both!
ginger - what is the 2.5 million early reading first grant?\
sue - ginger- deadline was 10/18. It's the precursor to the reading first grant. You had to do a preapp. My grant was selected to do the full application
ginger - do they do that every year?
ginger - congratulations, sue, i hope you get it!!!
sue - liz- check the files for recommended books
Susan (NC) - sue, no that would be being too brave; just a $600 one that I got last year. I already heard my $2,000 was turned down. 54 applied and only 8 were chosen for approx. $1,000 each.
sue - ginger- no this is the first year
liz - Does anyone know of a good checklist I could use for the lit entry?
Kelly M - tmw - YES!Now you've REALLY hit my favorite area! Let's see...I think the most important include The Morning Meeting Book (available on www.responsiveclassroom.org) and the Building a Primary Classroom from www.teachingstrategies.com . Let's see, there are more!
ginger - liz, have you searched the files?
tmw1 - This is a silly question, but how do I do that?
liz - I'm not sure what I'd look for?
ginger - not a silly question at all, tmwl
Kelly M - tmw - are you on our mailring?
sue - kelly- do you ever get that site I sent you posted in the files?
tmw1 - yes.
sue - tmw1- go to yahoo groups, join ECGEN and you'll have access to tons of information and lots of emails
tmw1 - I am a part of that. Just don't know how to check the files.
Kelly M - If you go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EC_GEN/ you can subscribe (if you aren't a member). Once you are a member, you can go to that page and click on Files (from the list of options on the left of that page). Be sure to check out the file that says Portfolio Help. It is actually from the old format...but the advice is GREAT. Just click on the literacy entry, etc. There are also lots of other great files in there, too...all contributed by folks going through the process!
sue - do a google search for ERIC clearinghouse for reading, english and communication.
tmw1 - Silly I know. I just joined it a couple of weeks ago.
sue - then search for what you need
Kelly M - sue - remind me...what site?
ginger - i spent many hours just reading the files for this ring....there is a wealth of great advice!
sue - ERIC clearing house on reading, english and communication
tmw1 - Thank you guys so much.
Kelly M - sue - are you part of your state applying for a Reading First grant?
ginger - good luck, tmwl. This is a really tough process, but so well worth it
Susan (NC) - tmw1 - you are in good hands if you are a part of Kelly's ring & this chat on Saturday! Just venting really helps!
sue - if you use the search word, research based reading strategies you get tons of information
Kathy - Kelly M, I wanted you to know that your post about changing the reading list and the comments with it were very professional and in good taste. I am proud to be part of a group that constantly reflects on what is best practices even in going through the national board process. Just wanted to say thanks!
sue - kelly- my parish- I was part of a 3 person team
Kelly M - tmw - if you have trouble finding your way around the files, just email me. I'll help any way I can. That's what they are there for!
liz - thank you
hollyfizz - how are you doing?
hollyfizz - just fine
sue - kelly- it's early reading first for up to K
hollyfizz - glad to be done with NBC
hollyfizz - but just stopped by to see if I could help out somehow
Kelly M - Kathy - thanks for the kind words. All of those who signed that letter wrote it. I think they're TERRIFIC teachers! Sue - from the dept of ed in WAshington?
liz - see everyone next week...thank you , again, for all of your help.have a good week!!
Kelly M - Hi hollyfizz!
sue - kelly- yes!
hollyfizz - hello kelly
Kelly M - liz - have a good week!
tmw1 - I agree. I read it. I am cautious about what I ask on the ring and in the chatroom because I don't want to cross the line of asking for too much help. I don't want that, just guidance in the right direction. If I ever do cross the line, someone just needs to kindly tell me.
ginger - i'm beginning to think about warming up some chili for supper, and taking the chill off this yucky day, so I will again say good bye. Thanks for hanging in there with us, Kelly! Bye
sue - tmw1- LOL! don't worry someone will remind you
Kelly M - sue - I'm on the panel that's reading the grants that are for K-3 for REading First!
hollyfizz - bye ginger
sue - kelly- my parish submitted a reading first grant, too!
tmw1 - I just noticed how ugly the comments got on the ring.
Kelly M - tmw - don't worry - you're fine! Always be sure to explain what you've done so far. It's much easier to respond to those posts on the mailring. Posts that say "what should I do for science' aren't going to get much of a positive response.
sue - tmw- everyone gets hormonal every now and then. but for the most part, we do fine
hollyfizz - I refered a physical ed teacher there for information in the files about the documented accomplishments
Susan (NC) - I would like some more information on the Reading First grants - where can I get it?
tmw1 - LOL
Kelly M - Please don't be cautious with your questions though. It really SHOULD be a safe environment in which you can ask anything! We've just had some candidates who wanted SO much spoon-feeding that we knew we had to make it clear that THAT was not the purpose of our mailring!
sue - susan- do a google search and it'll bring you to the home page.
Kathy - tmw1 - I think it is just from the process that sometimes some get cranky. I don't pay attention to those post. I just read the helpful ones.
tmw1 - I understand.
Susan (NC) - thanks sue........I need a new grant to work on! Maybe for next year?
hollyfizz - http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/readingfirst/grant.html
tmw1 - There are 11 of us at my school in this process. 3 have already gotten it. So there is alot of pressure.
sue - susan- do you go to schoolgrants.org?
hollyfizz - when I started the process I thought of it as a 3 year process
sue - 11!!! There were only 10 in my entire parish last yr
Kelly M - We had folks who clearly showed they hadn't even give it a thought...CLEARLY had not read the directions, etc. If you explain what you've done up to the point of your question (even briefly!...no need to be in depth!), then people are very willing to help you through the mire. Sometimes what you really do need to do is just go back and reread the directions maybe. So sometimes those responses are actually right on. Maybe not what somebody wants to hear...but that comment is never offered up just to be mean!
hollyfizz - that link is to readingfirst grants
Susan (NC) - Thanks hollyfizz - it is now in my grants folder! At least the NB process has taught me to be more technogy correct than I ever thought I could be!!
Kathy - I am the only one at my building. Four others in the district are CIW's too. One past last year. It is a lot of pressure.
Susan (NC) - sue, I get the schoolgrants newsletter - very informative!
hollyfizz - my colleague and I were the only ones in our school district to attempt NB in 2000 happily we both achieved it
hollyfizz - last year 22 people applied and only 5 completed the process
Kelly M - I'm still the only one in my district to have even tried. Our whole metropolitan area (St. Louis) only has something like 16 NBCTs!
sue - sorry- hubby checked football results
Susan (NC) - I'm still the only one at my school to try it...........someone tried in MC last year but quit the process before she completed the portfolio & almost suffered a nervous breakdown in the process! She is still getting counseling; hope it was not only NB that made her so wacko!
tmw1 - The teachers at the other schools in my district think it is a joke that all of us are going for it and that there is no way that most of us will get it. I just figured that I would be crazy not to go for it and have their support.
hollyfizz - the district and state aren't being as supportive as they have been
Kathy - Oklahoma funds 200 people a year to go through the process. We are fortunate to have their support.
sue - they were more selective in the process for funding this year
Kelly M - tmw - that's great for you to have so many others to talk it over with! I think that really helps!
hollyfizz - the only reason I went ahead and attempted it was because I had a buddy to work with it helped tremendouslyl
Susan (NC) - I am thankful that NC funds the whole process and gives you 1 redo-
sue - we had 2 EC GEN's and 2 MC GEN's attempted at my school last year
Kathy - We have to submit an application which includes how we incoporate the five core standards in our daily teaching. I thought that was hard until I got the box
hollyfizz - no one else in our building has tried
sue - the other EC GEN at school had a horrible year personally and didn't attend any mentoring sessions
tmw1 - Sc funds the whole process and you have 3 years to complete it successfully before you have to repay the loan.
Susan (NC) - hollyfizz, I wish someone would have gone through it with me...........3 said they would and backed out at the last minute. I had already committed!
hollyfizz - once I say i'm going to do something I do it!
hollyfizz - and luckily my friend stuck with it too
sue - I had a close friend at another school go through it with me
Susan (NC) - Me too hollyfizz!
hollyfizz - we did not collaborate much on the portfolio part but we studied for the assessment center together
sue - well, have to go buy a new dining room set
sue - have a great week
hollyfizz - sounds like fun sue
Susan (NC) - tmwl- you sound like you are on the right track!
hollyfizz - I want to go out and get some new earrings
tmw1 - That sounds like fun. Have a great week!
Kathy - Good luck tmw1 you can do this. Good luck to the CIW's in waiting. Have a great week!
hollyfizz - keep up the good work tmw1
hollyfizz - you can do it
Kelly M - tmw - where in SC are you?
hollyfizz - and anyone else working on their NB's
hollyfizz - cheers for now
tmw1 - Thanks! Hope so!
tmw1 - Pee Dee area about an hour from Columbia.
Susan (NC) - Suppose I should get back to the laundry............life goes on-
Kelly M - ah....I used to live in Summerville - a very long time ago!...taught in Dorcester County District 3 in Harleyville!
Kelly M - Susan - my fingers and toes are purple from keeping them crossed for you!
tmw1 - I live in Clarendon County.
tmw1 - My grandfather lives near Summerville.
tmw1 - That just shows how small this world really is.
Susan (NC) - Kelly, I went to a beginning teacher/ mentor meeting at our local university and met someone who knew several people I knew in Key Largo - small world!
Kelly M - Susan - LOL...I know! I've taught in four states...so I love going to national conventions. I always meet someone who knows someone I knew, etc.!
Susan (NC) - Uncross them Kelly - it will be ok!
Kelly M - tmw1 - I love that area!
tmw1 - It is nice.
tmw1 - I especially love the downtown Charleston area. It is so beautiful in the spring.
Susan (NC) - Kelly, I went to the NBPTS page and filled out the form for getting your scores when the time comes...............so scarey!!
tmw1 - I went to College of Charleston. Beautiful place I must say.
Kelly M - tmw - YES! I love that part best. But I also love the beach areas. We had some that we frequented that were so calm and relaxing....not stuffed with tourists, etc.!
Susan (NC) - I love Charleston too; we are going to the art show in February.
tmw1 - Definately!
Kelly M - ah...yes...the College is beautiful! Susan - glad you have it all squared away. I think it's great that they're going to have that ready for you. The only problem is that your fingers will have a doozey of a time trying to type in those numbers to access your page!
tmw1 - I can't even think that far ahead. Seems like forever before I get to that point. I know that time will pass quickly though!
Kelly M - tmw1 - but Charlestonians thought we were nuts. We swam in the ocean year-round. We had come from Maine...and the temp of the ocean in Maine in the heat of the summer was the same as the temp in Charleston in the dead of winter!
Kelly M - tmw1 - yes, the time will fly while you're working on this!
Kelly M - Well, I'd better go. I'm glad we turned this conversation around from talking about dressing up for the video!
tmw1 - I know what you mean. When I would go to the beach I would see people swimming and think that they were crazy because it would be cool to me.
tmw1 - I agree. I feel that that was a petty conversation.
tmw1 - I hope that everyone has a wonderful week. Can't wait to catch up next week.
Kelly M - We'll be here! Have a great week!
Susan - I'd better get back to my grant writing - good luck to you newbies and hang in there to you CIW's -
