Kelly M - Hi Becca and Melissa - how are you today?
Melissa in KY - Ok
sue - hi yall
Becca - Doing pretty good! The sun is back!
Kelly M - Hi sue - welcome!
Becca - That certainly does a lot to keep you moving!
Kelly M - Becca - glad you can see it. It's a typical gray day here in St. Louis.
Melissa in KY - Kelly, I am sorry about posting all my personal problems on the ring. Won't happen again. I know that is not what it is for.
sue - it's finally cool here
Becca - When i lived in WA state I was used to the gray. Moving to NC has totally spoiled me!
Kelly M - Melissa - Melissa - don't worry about it. Hi Patrice - congratulations!
sue - hi teacher of the year!!!
Becca - I am chugging away on the science. It is AMAZING how little you get done in a long time!
Patrice in KY - Thanks...I am still floating.
Patrice in KY - I really thought a Halloween Day in a kindergarten class would bring me back down to earth...no luck. LOL
sue - becca-- just keep reading. it will make sense I promise
Kelly M - Becca - just keep on chugging!
Becca - On the analysis section did you refer to specific times or more in general
Patrice in KY - Becca, I think I read more for science than any other area.
Becca - What I mean by that is at 10:48 Paige siad...
sue - becca- I didn't site times, I used direct quotes of what kids said to support my analysis.
sue - I also used brief descriptors of kids-- (blonde hair, red ribbons) etc
Patrice in KY - Becca, you will have a "map" showing where your children are (identified by what they are wearing) and you can use direct quotes to analyze.
Kelly M - Hi liz and Ginger - welcome! Becca - be specific - but don't use times. You can't assume that the assessor will have a timer that reads like yours does....
Patrice in KY - GINGER!!! Hi ya!
Kelly M - Hi there DebbieD - how are you??? I miss you!
ginger - what a week you had, Patrice!!
Patrice in KY - I am still dazed. LOL
Kelly M - DebbieD and Ginger - now we have nobody green!
sue - patrice- that didn't work for me becuase I had 2 seperate groups.. I just used descriptors. We wear unifroms, too
Patrice in KY - Now I am down to the business of waiting for scores.
Patrice in KY - ouch...the uniforms throws that idea way off, doesn't it.
sue - patrice- is it still after 11/16?
liz - too funny, sorry, I should have looked at the current colors!
ginger - hi, kelly. how was your week? Just a bit unnerving?
Patrice in KY - Becca, did you ever call first names or anything
Patrice in KY - Sue, I haven't heard otherwise
Becca - I used first names quite a bit
Kelly M - ginger - my week was fine! I figured we'd draw a crowd today! I think we stirred up a little interest, don't you?
Patrice in KY - I keep visiting the NB site to see if there is an update
sue - patrice-- just hoping!
ginger - does anyone here know exactly where the date of Nov. 16 came from? Was it from NB?
Kelly M - Hi Adrienne - how are you today?
Patrice in KY - I know what you mean, Sue.
sue - patrice- my "button" changed fron ready to test to test received
Kelly M - I keep thinking they might tell us something next weekend at the NBCT conference. We'll soon see!
Melissa in KY - I will change colors too. This is my first time doing this.
ginger - kelly, it's just nice to see lots ofpeople here without any insanity going on!
Patrice in KY - Mine too, Sue. I was a happy camper to see that happen. LOL It doesn't take much to thrill us at this point, does it?
Patrice in KY - Kelly, I am envious of your trip to the NB conference.
sue - I keep thinking of little things I might not have done. Way scary!!
Kelly M - Ginger - I heard the 16th at an NBPTS thing this summer.....but that's SO long from the date that anything could have made it different (either way!)
Patrice in KY - Live vicariously for us...will you?
sue - Now I'm wondering if I identified my student teacher on the video!!!
ginger - may I ask a question? In the district where each of you teach, what percentage of kids leave 1st grade reading on grade level?
sue - ginger- about 35%
ginger - thanks, kelly
AdrienneHC - hello to the room
ginger - thanks, sue
Patrice in KY - Wow, Ginger...that is an interesting question. I am not sure how to get the official info on that because at this time we do not have a district level exit program per grade level.
sue - ginger- I had the stats becuase I was working on another grant
liz - question about science..........inquiry science.I plan on showing my kiddos a bunch of colorful photos about the moon and hope they come up with questions of inquiry...my big idea isevidence, model and explanation......I hope they will lea themseoves to making a model of the moon by inquiring about "How did thos holes get on the moon?" Then I will have everything ready for exploration. Does this sound correct? I have no idea!!
Kelly M - Patrice - I always love the NBPTS things I go to. This will be my third NBCT conference...and they've all been good before, so I suspect this one will be, too! Ginger - I think about 1/3 to 1/2 of ours do...depending on the year.
sue - patrice- you don't have to do DRA testing?
ginger - we just had a speaker come to my district from Missouri to teach us about 4 blocks, and she said that about 100% of the kids in her district read BEFORE 1st!
AdrienneHC - I am having trouble how this room is working the page keeps refreshing. is there something I need to set in preferences?
sue - ginger- she must be in an upperclass, suburban area with 0 free lunch population and highly educated parents!
AdrienneHC - I do DRA testing here in MD
Patrice in KY - sue, no...we are now working on a new literacy strategies to determine more consistency within our district.
ginger - adrienne, the new stuff comes in at the top of the page. does that help?
marci - hi, I'm a newbie. I'll probably just listen but wanted to say hi
AdrienneHC - yes thank god I thought I was going crazy
Kelly M - Ginger - Where in MO? I'm from MO!!! There aren't many districts in MO that could make that statement...a few, but not many! liz - think about inquiry....it gets harder for you to do when the kids can't really examine the real thing....that's why dinosaurs and planets (moon) are difficult. They aren't impossible, mind you...but difficult to show true inquiry.
ginger - i guess so, sue, i was flabergasted!
sue - patrice- will you have to address the early reading first guidelines for EC?
Patrice in KY - hi newbie, Marci
ginger - hi, marci, thanks for being here
Kelly M - Hi Marci - welcome! - adrienne - the new messages appear at the top.
ginger - kelly, thanks for putting a dose of reality into it
sue - ginger- some of our district schools have that percentage. most don't
marci - hi, it's amzing I'm a grownup and a little nervous being here.
DebbieMc. - Hi ladies! Hope things are going well for all.
AdrienneHC - Can we discuss the literacy entry and how to get started with that?
Melissa in KY - Hi Debbie! Miss you.
ginger - wow, sometimes i think it would be sooo nice just to teach somewhere that the kids had such high ability
Kelly M - Hi DebbieMc - How are YOU????????? Marci - don't worry, it'll grow on you pretty fast! Hi djh - welcome!
DebbieMc. - Hello my fellow Kentuckians.
liz - oh, I hadn't thought about that, so the inquiry should be something they can really do here on Earth??
Patrice in KY - ginger, what assessment does your district do to determine grade level reading?
DebbieMc. - Kelly, I am fine. Trying to catch up today.
Patrice in KY - We do have a good KY showing today, don't we??
sue - adrienne- are you saving your worksamples?
Kelly M - Hi Jennifer - how are you today?
marci - I'm a bit confused about something maybe someone can help? my portfolio is due 3-15 but I think my assessment center date is end of March. can that be right? only a mnth to study?
ginger - patrice, we use Silver Burdett reading series and that's about the only way we test across the board
DebbieMc. - I really like to use different assessments because I don't think one gives enough info on the child.
Kelly M - liz - it would certainly be easier to 'inquire' about!
Jennifer`Rose - Hello everyone. I'm a student at Iroquois High school and am doing a project on stereotyping teachers, I have a few questions and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to answer a few
Becca - ginger- I have always taught in schools with 40-50 percent free and reduced...this year I am at a school with 3% fand reduced The academics aren't much higher BUT the parent support is.
liz - smae with me marci
sue - marci- you didn't get to schedule your own time?
ginger - each teacher uses her or his own testing- weird, huh?
AdrienneHC - I am starting to save work samples but I was wondering...In my school we do dra testing, running records, writing sprees, word list checklists and dication...isn't that enough assessment?
DebbieMc. - marci, you will be learning "stuff" while completing your portfolio that will help you with the AC.
DebbieMc. - sounds good to me Adrienne.
liz - ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhI'll have to find some ideas. I was all ready to go on that
ginger - jennifer rose, if you email me off line i would be glad to answer. gingerh@warwick.net
sue - adrienne- that depends on what you need to find out about your students based on the samples
Patrice in KY - Our district allows each school the opportunity to choose what series they want to use, as long as it is on bid list. I like the flexiblity of it...but it does lack consistency
marci - I have same situation as Becca just described. except they do move a little faster
Kelly M - Marci - you should have a window for the AC - like a several month window. Is yours Oct-March? Or Jan - June?
Jennifer`Rose - *smiles* Iroquois in Lousiville, Ky
DebbieMc. - Iroquois in Louisville?
tmw1 - Hello everyone!
Kelly M - Hi tmw1 - how are you today?
Jennifer`Rose - thank u ginger
ginger - ok, thanks for some feedback- I was beginning to lose it!
tmw1 - I'm alright. And you?
DebbieMc. - Jennifer do you know Cheryl Rigsby?
AdrienneHC - I am going to save other stuff but I felt like I did not need any other formal assessment to provide student information for the entry. They also have writing journals and stories they write every week.
djh - I teach 1/2 and I am using Observational survey with running records, gentry's developmental spelling, writing from a prompt and other informal, anecdotal notations
Jennifer`Rose - Mrs Rigsy...sounds familiar
Kelly M - Hi auntieba - welcome!
Jennifer`Rose - You know what she teaches?
auntieba - hi all this is my first time here
ginger - hey, this place is wonderfully full today! Welcome, auntiba!
DebbieMc. - Adrienne, I can't see what assessments you use, but make sure that you include ways that you assess oral (speaking and listening) skills.
tmw1 - Hello auntieba!
Patrice in KY - I used the Wood@#$% Johnson assessment tool and got tons of info to use.
DebbieMc. - She's working through Ky. Dept. of Ed.
Jennifer`Rose - Hi auntieba
liz - again an inquiry ?...Does one questionlead to another to another to another....and that is how it goes? Confusion here
tmw1 - For entry 4, do you have to have 20 pages of documentation?
Patrice in KY - Oh, yes...I remember....won't take the name of the assessment. That happened last year too. I promise, I am not using profanity.
Jennifer`Rose - Hmm. I think she was there during the presentation of awards for CAT's testing
sue - in my case, I'm required to do daily anecdotal notes on all my kids. I used those for lots of information
AdrienneHC - Thanks for that tip.
Patrice in KY - yes, liz...that is how it goes.
ginger - tmwl, i used up every inch i was allowed, but some very successful people did not
sue - tmw1- check the directions- I think it's a mx of 20
Kelly M - liz - yes - one leads to another - sort of like this process!
DebbieMc. - liz, my opinion--I think you should give them an opportunity to come up with answers to one questions and this is what opens the door to others.
marci - Kelly, you asked about my "window". I find everything hard to follow with what NB sent me but I believe the window is 10-1 to 3-31 but I was told to not even think about assessment center till the portfolio is done.
liz - wow...how does one plan? Plan as one goes?
Becca - Patrice did you have your own copy of the W_Johnson or did you borrow the one from you school psyc?
DebbieMc. - I mean the variables that are included in one beginning question will form others.
sue - I'm a CIW but I think this is an easy example of inquiry
Kelly M - Marci - you will actually be learning LOTS for the AC as you complete the portfolios! Then you can study. That IS a short time, but it all depends on when your paperwork was complete and your money was all in. That's what determines the window you are in.
liz - so you dont know really what the ending result is until you get there?
Patrice in KY - liz...kwl charts are a good avenue to use as a "jumping off point." I have discovered though, with inquiry, you must be prepared for anything. I have become quite the researcher in the last several months.
Susan (NC) - Hi everybody-
Patrice in KY - I borrowed one from the resource teacher in our building
Kelly M - Hi Susan! Welcome!
ginger - liz, think of all the units you have to do, then pick one that gives the kids lots of time to say, "wow. I wonder how that works?
DebbieMc. - Susan, how are you?
tmw1 - Hello susan
marci - my county sent in the money so that it hit the very last day for a that window. 1 more day and I would have had another month
Susan (NC) - opps liz has the same color; I'll change and be right back!
Jennifer`Rose - Once again I must ask for I need to interview Teachers...I'm a student at Iroquois High school and am doing a project on stereotyping teachers, I have a few questions and was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to answer a few?
sue - kids ask and answer their own questions based on their manipulation/observation of objects
liz - so,,,you pick the big idea and go from there
Kelly M - liz - you can be gently guiding....leading the questions a little! But be prepared for them to take you anywhere!
Jennifer`Rose - Or send me an email so I could send you the questions via e-mail ...
Patrice in KY - liz, also remember...give children the opportunity to explore tools or items connected to the concept you want to teach. Then walk around the room and be a kid watcher. They will come up with the "Hey, cool...look at this..." stuff.
Kelly M - Jennifer - you might get a better response in one of the regular chatrooms here at teachers.net . This is a Meeting Room - and this is an actual meeting going on right now.
Susan (NC) - OK- I'm back with "Barney Purple" hi Debbie Mc!
Kelly M - Hi Kim - welcome!
Kim TX - Hello everyone! what is the topic of this meeting?
liz - wow this might be a fun portfolio to do....then I should have the math and technology at their fingertips so they can use naturally
DebbieMc. - Jennifer, if you send me the questions in an email, I'll be glad to respond. crow@muhlon.com
Kelly M - liz - YES!
marci - it's hard to keep up. you can tell this is my first time. I was at a great site this afternoon sent in by someone on the ring for inquiry
Jennifer`Rose - Thank u DebbieMc.
sue - liz- I'm a CIW but I loved the science entry.
Kelly M - Kim - anything to do with EC-GEN for National Board! How can we help you?
Patrice in KY - you got it, liz!!!!!!
ginger - liz, when i plannned the activity, i had a kwl so i knew what misconceptions they had and i figured out a way to include math in the inquiry they were going to do.
Patrice in KY - sue, I am with you...and I thought I would like it least of all. It turned out to be the most exciting.
liz - ok thank you again...Kelly and the others, you have been such a geat help with all of this. Now I just need to begin!!
marci - I had to leave the room, liz do you mind saying your idea again
ginger - i love the inquiry!
Kim TX - I know EC is early childhood but what is GEN? to become National Board Certified?
liz - thak you Patrice
auntieba - sorry just tying to figure this all out
sue - patrice- I'm known as the "bug lady" at school and the kids had a blast
tmw1 - I am starting to write my reflection for entry 4. In it, am I supposed to go into which area I have more accomplishments in and which areas I need to work on? I need some direction with this please.
ginger - i have a wonder box in my room- just a box with broken electrical stuf in in and two screw drivers. Boy, do we get inquiry from that!
Patrice in KY - I have discovered that inquiry goes across the curriculum. Sometimes I think that understanding is the best present the NB process ever gave me.
Susan (NC) - Lots of people here today- are you talking about anything in particular?
AdrienneHC - tmw1 I have started typing that entry what are you having trouble with
DebbieMc. - And big ideas are also in every content area.
djh - I am glad that you found the site helpful, marci
Kelly M - Kim - GEN is 'generalist' - meaning we teach all the subject areas. Yes, for National Board certification.
Patrice in KY - sue, the "bug lady" LOL sounds wonderful
ginger - kim, yes this room is for people trying to become Nationally Board Certified
tmw1 - The reflection part
Kim TX - I had never even heard of National Certification until the other day...is it new??
auntieba - someone wrote in an email about borrowing the tapes from a gentleman in VA
DebbieMc. - That would be Melissa from Ky, auntiba
liz - Sue, what was you big idea for the bugs?
sue - patrice- that's because we had crickets, mealworms, worms, butterflies, a millipede and a guinea pig in class!
DebbieMc. - Melissa, are you still here?
Patrice in KY - sounds like a zoo, sue. lol
Kelly M - Kim - they've been certifying teachers in some certificate areas for about 8-9 years. Other areas are much newer.
ginger - sweet kim, you can learn a lot about it at www.nbpts.org
AdrienneHC - Oh, I am just beginning the description and will be working on the reflection this evening after my son goes to sleep. Do you see any areas that you are weak in. I have noticed from mine that I don't have a lot of connections with other grade levels in the building.
sue - liz- it depends on how you teach ir
marci - I looked at parts of the tapes, they looked like they would be worth investing in
sue - oops teach it
Kelly M - Hi molly - welcome!
Kim TX - How about special ed?
Melissa in KY - Yes, I was the one who borrowed the tapes. I think he prefers to sell them now though. His name is Joe Exline.
Becca - I have the tapes I could mail to someone
liz - I should pick something that I am supposed to teach in third grade, right??
ginger - sue, mealworms??? that is where i draw the line!!! I'll even have a snake around, but not mealworms!
DebbieMc. - Yes, Kim. I've mentored an Ex. Needs teacher through the process.
auntieba - well he is mailing the pbs inquiry videos to borrow
marci - that's very thoughtful Becca. If you're serious I'd love to look at them in whole
Patrice in KY - I can pretty much join you there though. Right now we have night crawlers, goldfish, a frog, snails, a crayfish and a sea monkeys.
liz - Becca, what tapes, the science tapes? $50.00??
Kelly M - liz - sure! You dont' have to do something for nbpts that you wouldn't do anyway! You should just do what you need to do - and work it around what you need for nbpts...
sue - ginger- they were the best pet. nothing to taking care of them and the kids saw the whole life cycle
auntieba - melissa if you are there ty, so much
Patrice in KY - Ginger..have you seen my website where the children are holding the worms.
liz - I'd love t borrow them
Kim TX - wow sounds interesting!! Do districts pay more for begin Nat. Cert? I have never noticed mention of it on our salary scale
auntieba - he is sending them to me he was so nice
Becca - Yah-I loaned them to Pam. But I will get them back when i see haer at the NBCT conference next week.
Becca - If you want email me beccanbpts@yahoo.com
Kelly M - Hi Myra - how are you today?
djh - Hermit crabs are wonderful classroom pets
ginger - i seem to kill all my class pets...hmmm...i'm not sure i should admit to that
sue - patrice- a crawfish! My kids would eat him LOL!
Patrice in KY - As a matter of fact...right now we have baby worms, baby sea monkeys and baby snails....my animal kingdom is active.
tmw1 - WHere is everyone from?
djh - They are a strange and unusual creature to most children and foster much questioning
Becca - WOW Baby sea monkeyies! How did you get those?
Patrice in KY - do any of you use the Foss science curriculum?
sue - this year I;ve started slow-- only milly the millipede is in class now
Kim TX - my hermit crabs die every time they molt...I just tell the kids they switched shells
liz - I', from sunny Fla
Kelly M - Kim - some districts/states do, some don't. It continues to grow by leaps and bounds though. Texas hasn't had a lot of interest to date...but it will!
ginger - i once killed a hermit crab. the guy at the pet store told me to give him more sun and i left him near the window....fried the little guy
DebbieD - Hi KElly - sorry to have been interrupted, got a phone call.
Becca - I use the FOSS but extend it a bunch! It is nice to have some of the resources together
ginger - good idea, kim
djh - I am in Calif-at a charter school in rural area
Patrice in KY - Becca, my children noticed the sea monkeys were riding "piggyback." Before you know it....there were baby sea monkeys!!
auntieba - hey djh, we have hermit crabs, lol just dont drop them, the kids take them home every weekend
DebbieD - It's so strange to read everyone's messages about scores coming soon - how I remember that mixed feeling of dread and need to know!
Melissa in KY - This is my first time here.
Kelly M - I'm in St. Louis...
Patrice in KY - Oh Ginger!!!!!
ginger - and patrice, did you explain the piggyback thing?
DebbieMc. - I'm from Ky.
Kim TX - are the exams very difficult? is there an oral interview?
liz - Question about ss port.....can it go the same way, sort of, like the inquiry science? Mine went that way one thing let=d to the next regarding my classsroom community
Patrice in KY - not on your life, ginger.
sue - new orleans
djh - I know a kids dropped one last week and now he is labelled the crab killer by others!
Melissa in KY - I must be a slow reader. Hard time keeping up.
ginger - we were studying digestion last week and i got a long piece of intestine from the guy down the street that makes sausage. the kids loved it and we got lots of funny expressions as we filled it up!
Patrice in KY - oh no!! a crab killer!! Hmmm....that would make for some interesting classroom community building.
DebbieD - ginger - what did you fill it with?
DebbieMc. - It takes some getting used to Melissa. Sometimes, if you look away for a minute, you've lost the thread.
auntieba - do we read top to bottom or bottom to top
liz - what grade soes everyone teach?
marci - ginger, I love that idea. What grade do you teach?
ginger - djh, my kids discovered that ours had died and i had to take responsibility!
sue - liz- reread. It used to be a social study lesson integrated with the Arts that showed classroom community
ginger - 2nd, liz
Susan (NC) - Melissa, I'm with you........when there is this many people in the room; it is very difficult (at least for me it is) to keep everybody straight!
Kelly M - Kim - it's at least a year-long process - writing portfolios and then a very meaty written exam over content.......
ginger - auntiba, read from top to bottom. the new stuff is at the top
sue - ginger- great idea!
marci - liz I teach 1st grade in Fl.
tmw1 - How exactly is everything scored? I now that it is on a 4 pt rubric, but how can that add up to at least 275 pts.
ginger - 2nd,marci
Patrice in KY - i have fish on bowls on each one of our tables...once i thought one was dead and i flushed it...it began swimming around in the toliet as it went down
djh - Someone talked about doing things accidently and then they all got over it after a day or two of a little ugliness. Plus I have forbidden them to say that aloud.
DebbieD - Debbie Mc- thanks for emailing me about the MCGen group. I'll check it out!
Melissa in KY - How many are usually here?
auntieba - i cant believe i am trying for nbpts i cant read this
auntieba - i cant believe i am trying for nbpts i cant read this
liz - yes, it still is but my unit was diversity and commonality in communities...I analyzed my classroom because it was so diverse and one question led to another yadayada....I hope I did that one right
ginger - we chewed cookies, and looked into each other's mouths to see the saliva working!
Kim TX - thanks for the info...I'll have to check out the website
tmw1 - Silly question I know!
ginger - melissa, usually only 5 or 6
DebbieMc. - You're welcome, DebbieD. My sister loves it.
sue - gross ginger!
Melissa in KY - I think I just counted 18 or 19!
Patrice in KY - oh, Ginger. I would love to be in your class.
liz - Kelly and ginger feedback on my ss // please??
ginger - yeah, sue, they loved it!
marci - melissa, I too am here for the first time and my head is spinning trying to read everything and not miss something
DebbieD - tmw1 - it's not a silly quesiton at all - the 10 entries are all multiplied by different numbers to reflect their importance in the score, then multiplied by 100 and added up to (you hope) 275 or more.
sue - each portfolio is weighted differently. it should be in your getting started section
Kelly M - tmw1 - each portfolio is weighted differently. I think it's on the nbpts website under FAQ...and it should be explained in your materials. Hi there aggieb! How are you today?
ginger - liz, that sounds like a good ss topic to work on
Patrice in KY - When we did digestion last year, my kindergarten children started saying, Mrs. McCrary, I have to go dispose of some waste.
aggieb - I am fine,, listening carefully
ginger - it all depends on what you do with it, liz
DebbieMc. - ss has big ideas but I think that inquiry learning would certainly have a place. The answers might not be as concrete in SS as in Science, though.
ginger - thanks patrice
Melissa in KY - Ginger, that sounds gross. Effective and I am sure the kids loved it, but Yuck! I am sure the parents loved you for that one.
DebbieD - patrice - you and ginger should come to Duluth. I have to dissect a heart and lung, and I'm soliciting dr and nurse parents to do it.
sue - hey aggie!!!
liz - I was worried I didn't exactly follow my county's curriculum....
Kelly M - liz - I'm sorry - I got lost back there.....sounds like others caught your idea, though!
aggieb - I attended a wonderful inquiry workshop this morning
ginger - the kids realized that we were actually going to talk about poop, and you should have seen their faces!
DebbieMc. - tmw1, each entry receives a score of .75 to 4.25. I think. Right guys?
DebbieD - Hey aggie! How are you!
Patrice in KY - debbied...you would be on your own on that one...I just don't know if I could do that.
sue - debbie- what grade?
ginger - not only that, melissa, but we had a drawing at the end of the day, and one lucky kid got to take the intestine home!!!
DebbieD - I can't, and since we're not studying throwing up, I have to get some help. Fortunately lots of parents are willing
DebbieD - Sue - 5th grade
Kelly M - DebbieMc - yes that's correct. Then it's multiplied by the weight. Some are weighted 16, some less, etc.
Patrice in KY - oh ginger and debbied...I have tears running down my face!!!
liz - Ginger, I have hear that before...what does that mean when someone says it depends on what you do with it?? I feel like I answered all of the questions....still so unsure
AdrienneHC - I was talking to someone about entry 4 are you still there?
sue - debbie- I couldn't do it
Melissa in KY - Ginger, what grade do you teach? You are a hoot! I wish you were at my school.
auntieba - do you have o be seen in your video, i have a really good clip from our walk but i was taping, you hear my voice
Patrice in KY - ginger...that would have been my luck in elementary school...to get to take the intestines home
DebbieMc. - What about entry 4, Adrienne?
sue - ginger- did you read everybody poops?
DebbieD - When I taught 2nd we had to dissect a cow's eye. Two nurse practitioner moms came and the kids had a great experience, and I didn't even have to be in the same room!
tmw1 - So , like if you get a 3 on entry 4 is it then multiplied by 12 since that part is worth 12 % ?
marci - you do have to be in the video
Kelly M - liz - any topic can be presented in ss (or in science)....it all depends on what you do with the topic that matters. Someone could present sink and float and have the kids read about it in a book. That wouldn't be a good portfolio...no inquiry, etc. So it depends on what you do with a topic. That's why nobody can tell you what topics are good or not!
sue - auntiba- it;s my understanding that you must be seen at least once on the video
DebbieD - That's right, tmw1
AdrienneHC - hello
DebbieMc. - You would get 36 points on your way to 275, tmw1.
Patrice in KY - auntieba...last year we were told we needed to be seen at least once so the assessors could verify it was us...that is why you send a driver's license picture.
ginger - liz, some teachers might just read a book about everyone being diverse, and draw a picture about diversity, and that's that. That would probably not be very strong. Do you see? You have to do things that are more involved, do what youknow to be good teaching
tmw1 - I understand now thanks
DebbieD - Auntiba - the best video I did cut off my head, so I couldn't use it.
Kelly M - You have to be seen in your video so that they can check out your picture there with your picture on your photo ID (driver's license)...to make sure it's really you....
sue - tmw-- like this entry 4 is weighted at 12-- max scores is 48. entry 1-3 are weighted 16 max score is 64. right yall?
ginger - yep, my son has a copy of it on the back of his toilet
liz - ok good. I feel much bettger
Patrice in KY - right, Sue
AdrienneHC - was saying to that person that they should reflect on what areas they feel they are week in like I felt Iwas week in connecting with other staff members
auntieba - you can see my hand, lol
Kelly M - sue - right!
sue - ginger- the gas we pass is a good one,too
AdrienneHC - did i miss something...why are we discussing poop
ginger - ok, sue, i'll look for that one!
auntieba - i figured
ginger - sorry, adrienne, just reminiscing about a lesson from this week
marci - it would involve your class using their 5 senses
DebbieD - Adrienne - in the context of inquiry science! Although, out of context, the messages must look pretty funny!
AdrienneHC - that ok I am sure alot of inquiry time could be spent on poop
sue - so, in theory you can really bomb the AC and pass if you have good portfolio scores
sue - ginger- he also does the holes in our noses
Kelly M - sue - yes! you do not have to do well on everything!
marci - ginger, I'd love to get more info on your digestion unit to teach when I'm done with my portfolio entry.
DebbieD - I've really got to get cracking. I'm writing 5th grade report cards for the first time and it's taking forever!
Patrice in KY - sue, who is this author
ginger - ok, sue, you have made me smile. I will look for them
aggieb - sue what was the total score for the portfolio plus 12 pts for standard error
ginger - you got it, marci
auntieba - well i guess we will just go on another nature walk and tape again
sue - patrice- brb
liz - I would feel terrible if I didn't pass because of nly 5 points
tmw1 - That was me Adrienne. I am weak in teacher as a learner. However, I am learning as I work with other teachers and researching on the internet right?
DebbieD - Everybody have a good week - do something fun to take your mind off waiting for scores!
Melissa in KY - I'd like a copy of the digestion unit too,
Patrice in KY - liz, I met someone recently who missed it by one point....it happens
aggieb - I counted 238 with 4.0 wishful thinking
marci - this chat has raised my spirits
sue - liz- my coworker missed by 2 points last yr
Patrice in KY - bye debbied
ginger - liz, i'm sure that happens, but if you choose a part to redo, you don't have to redo the whole thing
sue - author of the gas we pass-- shinta chp
AdrienneHC - I am in the middle of writing entry 4 and have 5 pages typed already and was wondering if I am going to have enough room to fit in everything. Have you all had this problem?
liz - oh no!! Was she bummed???
liz - Did she know why?
ginger - guys, i don't have a digestion unit. i pull from a file full of stuff each year and choose what i want to use
tmw1 - me too
sue - major white out
auntieba - sue, ughhhhhhhhhhhh
djh - Is being part of a mailring a an example of networking/teacher as a learner? How would you prove it?
Patrice in KY - AdreenneHC, just type for now, you can cut later
Kelly M - Adrienne - I think everybody has space problems in their writing!
ginger - adrienne, yes, just keep typing. Later on you can have someone read it and helpyou shorten it
AdrienneHC - tmw1 are you speaking to my questions
Becca - AdrienneHC- I started with 16 and cut and cut and made it consice
liz - That would be awful.
marci - I just couldn't read the part with the sausage stuffing, etc. fast enough before it was gone
sue - sorry yall. I think it is a good book to include with gingers digestion unit
Becca - Science is the same way right now my planning and instruction is 8 pages long somehow I need to get it to 4
tmw1 - Yes
auntieba - where is everyone going i a, loosimg you
ginger - thanks, sue, it will be perfect!
aggieb - I agree that it is important to get your thought down first and then cut for any entry
sue - liz- one or two entries were lower than expected
djh - Type and type then edit- better to cut than scramble to add I am thinking as I work.
auntieba - u r back
AdrienneHC - great I like that better if I just keep typing because I and probably all of you think that everything is important
sue - all newbies- write, write write!! you can always edit down
aggieb - okk,, let's discuss one topic for 5 minutes. what will it be?
ginger - becca, when you get it all typed, let someone read it. they will tell you where you used extra words, or repeated something
Kelly M - djh - you get somebody on the ring to establish that you are indeed a contributing member! Maybe somebody who could say that things you contribute have impacted THEIR students!
AdrienneHC - this is great I am getting answers right away
aggieb - :<
liz - How can you pann for the science other than picking the big idea?
tmw1 - I am just really having a hard time with the reflection part
djh - Hmmmmmmmmmmmm..good idea
AdrienneHC - Are NBCT's allowed to read for Current Candidates?
DebbieMc. - becca, sometimes it's just a matter of cutting out all the stuff that you "think" you have to include. A lot of people ramble around and end up cutting most of the extra language. You'll have to look at it when you're through answering the questions.
sue - kelly- I used the tnet ring as part of my " learner/ leader" entry.
marci - how long does this chat go? I hour?2?
Patrice in KY - liz, do you have a curriculum map of where you MUST head according to state content or anything along those lines?
AdrienneHC - tmw1 maybe I will have some ideas for you after I work on the reflection part this evening and then on the next chat I can be of more help.
liz - what was your evidencce sue
sue - one of the things I did was use the " find" button in word. It told me how many times I used a specific word ie. that, the etc.
liz - yes, Patrice I do .so I should follow that first?
ginger - marci, i think we can stay as long as we wish, but i have to get some dinner soon
tmw1 - I would really appreciate it. thanks
sue - it saved space
DebbieMc. - tmw1, remember that when you reflect you find the good things and the things you need to work on more.
Patrice in KY - tmw1, you are not alone. As teachers we are accustomed to jumping from one thing to the other to get everything in...reflection is something that begins to evolve and will stay with you through this process.
Kelly M - sue - some have used the EC-GEN mailring. Adrienne - some NBCTs do read for candidates. marci - we've been in here as long as 4 hours! But usually it's about 1 1/2 to 2 hours!
auntieba - you did sue, how did you basically present that
sue - liz- the number of teachers who implemented take home programs as the result of sharing my workshop info
marci - I was thinking I'd miss too much if I went to the bathroom.
Patrice in KY - liz, in your contextual factors you include what guidelines you must follow, including state mandated content. Simply set the stage for inquiry.
ginger - hey! Here's an idea i got yesterday about inquiry. I did an internet search last night about the solar system and many of the sites listed national standards. Try that and see what help it might be
sue - it was not the whold accomplishment but part of another one
DebbieMc. - tmw1, also remember that accomplishments you include need to have impacted student learning. If not, don't include them.
ginger - marci, you make me smile!
liz - ginger, I wanted to do an inquiry on the solar system but someone told me unless I am out in space or something like that, it is not true inquiry?
Kelly M - marci - these chats are archived - although sometimes it takes awhile before they're uploaded! But it's sort of like reading our files....everything you read helps to make things a bit more clear!
marci - vice versa, where do you teach ginger? want to relocate to Florida?
liz - I ahd a great idea that wuld include all of the things.....math, tech.........
ginger - no i would NOT recommend it for inquiry. We were having a star gazing evening last night, and I had to come up with some indoor activities in case of rain
Patrice in KY - I have to scoot friends. My husband and I have dinner plans. Take care, have a great week and Newbies...write, write, write.
DebbieMc. - Could you do something on conditions on planets or explosions of stars and let the kids see what could be different under different conditions?
djh - Why do you have to visit the sun to see the effects of it- there is inquiry in the solar system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
marci - I have become a an achive reading junkie and have printed scads of posts hoping to gather insight for when I start getting this all together
ginger - marci, i live in NY, but if i relocated anywhere but CA, my sister would kill ,me!
tmw1 - I have written up 9 accomplishments and it took 12 pages. To me, they have all impacted student learning in some way or another. I didn't right up things like team leader because I felt writing up things that directly involved the students would be better. Am I on the right track?
auntieba - marci get a pot a pottie
ginger - patrice, thanks for sharing with us today. have a great dinner! xoxo
ginger - patrice, thanks for sharing with us today. have a great dinner! xoxo
sue - ginger- go to NASA.org You can have your class name included in the Saturn probe
liz - ok so I am correct that I need to choose something her on Earth that wuld be realistic that the kiddos could truly inquiry about
tmw1 - Bye Patrice. Have a great evening!
AdrienneHC - I am only on entry 4 right now am i behind
sue - tmw- team leader should have impacted your students or other students as well
DebbieMc. - Of course, you would have to guide the kids to wonder.
sue - adrienne- work on several at once
ginger - well, to all of you who participated today, thanks for the smiles and the positive attitude. My heart is lifted! Hope to see you on the ring.
aggieb - Adrienne, I would be planning ahead.
liz - by everyone...thank you for all of the wonderful insights
djh - liz-what effects of the solar system do the kids see in their lives? shadows? time? seasons?
ginger - sue, we went on and sent our names to some list that's going to Mars
ginger - bye
DebbieMc. - tmw1, you could include team leader if you showed that you helped your colleagues learn something/used something that impacted student achievement.
marci - I gave my students blown up balloons the other day (a paper mache project that didn't get finished) and I let them figure out what to do with them. Is this the type of thing that is an inquiry science lesson? They talked about static electricity, air movement, etc.
AdrienneHC - I think now that I have actually started typing that I can start looking at the others. It was hard to start but I just had to do what others said on yahoo groups...,just start like you are telling a parent what you do in your class. Is the chat over?
Kelly M - Adrienne - it's not over until the last person leaves!
djh - I think you have to do several entries at once but they can be in different stages of planning/writing
Melissa in KY - I can't believe it has been an hour! The time has flown by.
aggieb - ok,, I may be off did you add 12 for errors
sue - don't spend a lot of time of entry 4-- it's weighted less than the other entries
DebbieMc. - Well, I've got soup on the stove. Need to test it for seasoning and do some more catch up. Everybody have a great week. Remember you can't get the time back so enjoy it!
AdrienneHC - I guess you would need to have some sort of outline or ideas going for all of them
AdrienneHC - Oh, I did not know it was weighted less...where can I find out the importance of each entry? Is it in the directions?
Becca - Could we brainstorm shom characteristics of inquiry science. I'm stuck and I think it would spur me on
djh - That's what I have been thinking Adrienne- look at the year and what in your curriculum can fit each entry?
Becca - for example students raise questions
Becca - students observe but don't just look
tmw1 - I hope to get my box next week.
aggieb - students find out by exploring
djh - Inquiry sceince- questioning, enduring understandings, curiosity, building on what they know guided discovery
marci - teachers ask more questions instead of just giving answers
djh - Children could record what they note and changes
marci - teacher as facilitator
sue - adrienne - FAQ on the website according to kelly
tmw1 - Well let me go. My 2 year old is getting impatient with me. Thanks for the advice. Talk to everyone next week. Have a great week.
marci - u2
Melissa in KY - I have hungry kids. Gotta logoff.
djh - yes- it includes good habits of mind and investigative skills
Kelly M - becca - be sure to read Cheryl's paper on inquiry that is in our files. It is really good, too!
Becca - ah! I have that saved on my harddrive I'll pull it up right now
marci - I can't find that paper Kelly, I've been looking for it. where exactly in the files is it?
AdrienneHC - Cheryl's sigmon has a paper on inquiry
AdrienneHC - I would like to read it
sue - marci- try science p
marci - huh? science p?
sue - darn! it's freezing. don't know how northerners can handle this
sue - science portfolio
Kelly M - adrienne - the paper I'm talking about is not cheryl sigmon. she's four blocks! But our own cheryl wrote a paper about inquiry science. It's in the files on the EC_GEN website. Look in the old portfolio files....I think it's labeled Portfolio Help.
marci - any idea around the time frame for it Kelly?
Kelly M - Under Portfolio Help scroll down the different files....one is labeled Cheryl's Inquiry Science paper - or words to that effect.
marci - I'm still feeling my way around navigating the site. There's so much info.
Kelly M - I'll go check where it is exactly right now... be right back...
Becca - gotta run! Thanks everyone! Kelly I will SEE YOU on Thursday night or Friday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sue - click on sinteag's file
sue - gotta go
marci - thanks Kelly, I appreciate it
djh - bye
AdrienneHC - Kelly sorry oops wrong subject are you talking about the NBPCT website or some other sight?
marci - I thought she meant the EC GEN site
Kelly M - Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EC_GEN/files and scroll almost to the bottom of the files listed. Click on Portfolio Help. Inside that folder, scroll down something more than 15 files....and you will find Science Inquiry Paper by Cheryl Wolff....
aggieb - The inquiry is located in the Yahoo files
AdrienneHC - where is the EC Gen site
AdrienneHC - thanks talk to you next time
Kelly M - Adrienne - are you on our mailring?
Kelly M - Becca - YES...see you Thursday evening in San Diego!
Becca -
marci - thanks Kelly I'll try that in a little while
auntieba - hey i am having trouble finding the lingo for big ieas re leaves, temp, sun=seasons
auntieba - y ideas out there i know it is interaction with the environment
marci - wouldn't that be under change?
Kelly M - auntieba - it all depends on what you are doing with the leaves, etc. The 'big idea' is sort of the lens through which you are studying a topic. One topic could fit several different big ideas usually.....
Kelly M - homeschoolmom - how are you?
Homeschlmom - I'm just great Kelly and you?
auntieba - we are asking questions about why is it dry inder trees, looking at different shapes, sizes photosynthesis
aggieb - auntieba, would you focus on systems, eco systems?
Kelly M - I'm fine, thanks!
Kelly M - I'm going to have to run......have a great week everybody. See you on the ring!
aggieb - How the trees and the undergrowth all work together , etc
marci - I've been at this computer since 10 am reading emails and looking for good info on inquiry science. I think it's time for a walk in the fresh air. Thank you so much everyone for all the support and insights. Kelly, I'm going to go look for that paper before I go . Thanks again, I'll see you next week.
aggieb - auntieba, what inquiry lessons are you planning with leaves
aggieb - No questions?
auntieba - agg, we asked questions about how photo works, how and why leaves change colors, what do the viend do i a leaf
