jtb - hi deb, are you doing national boards
Debbie Mc. - Hi, jtb. No, I'm already certified.
Debbie Mc. - HI Kelly!
jtb - good for you, im going through this year
Kelly - Hi Debbie! How are you?????
Debbie Mc. - I'm fine. I'm off Monday and Tuesday! YEAAAA!
Kelly - jtb - are you doing EC-GEN?
jtb - im off too.......... yeah!!!!!!!!
Kelly - Hey - how come you folks are off???
jtb - yes, kelly i am
Debbie Mc. - Monday professional day, Tuesday National election.
jtb - workday and election
Debbie Mc. - I love our calendar.
Kelly - Yikes - our school board doesn't know how to say "work day"......we get NONE. Report cards are due next Wed....and we get no time off to prepare them....
jtb - HI Leigh
Debbie Mc. - We don't have work days either. If we don't do inservice on our own time, we do it on prof. days. We don't get time for progress reports either.
Leigh - hello everyone. I am a newbie.
Kelly - Hi Leigh and Sole19 - can we help you? And jtb, have you begun writing an entry?
Debbie Mc. - Hi Leigh. Excuse me ladies, I have to get something to eat. I'll be right back.
jtb - i havent written anything yet, but taped a science lesson last week and i am saving samples and have all my proff dev. dont know what to do next my science lesson turned out great i think i hope its what they want
Leigh - I havent started writing , creating my ss unit
Leigh - Have two workdays filled with workshops
Kelly - hi Carol.......I'll hope that we don't all get bumped this time.![]()
Kelly - jtb - what did you do for your science?
Carol - I am also new. I have lots planned, but nothing wriiten. I am paralyzed with fear. Planning to tape Sci (magnets) in a couple of weeks.
Leigh - I am also am confused on the science thing
Kelly - Are you all a part of our email ring? (EC_GEN@egroups.com)
jtb - i did small groups with focusing on science process skills. the students weere i nsmall groups observing and communicating about apples and pumpkins then they had to create their own venn diagrams
Debbie Mc. - jtb, were your students doing any hands on science? Discover or inquiry?
jtb - they measured weighed both of them and we really stressed the process skills like predicition, observation, communication, measurement and inference
Leigh - wanted to do a healthy living unit for science. Planned to pose a question about plaque, chew the red tablets and see what happens. Is this enough discovery
Carol - Yes, I am on the ring (since June) It has been VERY INFORMATIVE and encouraging.
jtb - i didnt know about mail ring do you just type in that address
jtb - yes, they had actual pumpkins and apples
Debbie Mc. - Carol, you really want the students to be involved in "doing" something. Don't you agree Kelly?
Kelly - jtb - (and anyone else!) write to me at lkelly46@cs.com - I can subscribe you to our mailring. We have over 700 members on it - all EC-GEN folks! It's a great place to be if you're involved in EC-GEN!
Debbie Mc. - Here's the lady to ask! Hi sinetag.
jtb - they were discovering and then using inquiry. do you think that sounds ok
Kelly - here's your science person! (Sinetag!) Ask away with your questions!
jtb - i will write to you kelly, would love to be a part
jtb - sinetag, would you give me feed back on my science lesson. i teach first grade we taped last week
sinetag - sure - what was your lesson?
Leigh - I teach first grade also jtb
Carol - I'm the one doing magnets. I feel that they will be prediciting, testing items to see if they are attracted to a magnet, and discussing. I will bring all groups together at the end. For science small group for the last two weeks we have "practiced" doing what scienctists do with discovery bottles and simple experiments chosen by the children from a book. I've made notes and given them feedback on their comments and quesitons.
sinetag - and have you taped your lesson yet?
jtb - over the last few weeks we have been doing a unit on pumpkins and apples. for the purpose of the tape the students were in groups of 5. The had actual pumpkins and apples and each person had a job. the first thihng they did was to observe and discuss characrerististics about the two and compare and contrast them. The recorder then filled in their responses on a venn diagram. I moved from group to group probing and asking questions. They came up with great ideas and used the terms of the science process skills. How does this sound
Leigh - sinetag what do you think? I want to a science unit on living a healthy life. I would like to pose some questons about plaque , have kids chew the red tablets and see what hapeens. Is this appropriate?
jtb - we have really been focusing on the science process skills
sinetag - jtb: besides practicing scientific inquiry skills (which it sounds like you're doing), what specific science content is the focus of your lesson and/or unit?
sinetag - Leigh: what else would you do in that unit?
jtb - seeds and the sequence of the growth of apples and pumpkins
jtb - do they want to see only small groups or some guided discussion. when i read it seemed like they did not want any transitions
sinetag - jtb: so your unit is on plant life cycles?
Leigh - germs, dental, exercise. Collect germ samples from around the school find the germist place.Discuss all the ways to help keep a healthy body.
sinetag - kelly, you will have to answer questions about the specifics of the videotaping (length, etc.)
jtb - yes
jtb - i know they want 20 minutes, but wasnt sure if just 20 minutes of small group
sinetag - leigh: i like the germ sampling idea. how will you implement that? could you use that for the video?
jtb - sinetag, do you think my lesson sounds ok
sinetag - jtb: so when you talk about characteristics of pumpkins, etc., are you talking about color, shape, texture, or are you talking about how the seeds germinate, etc.
Kelly - Regarding the video - it IS 20 minutes - but can be broken once - so you could have a 10 minute portion of small group and a 10 minute of large group - or 2 10 minute small groups.....
Carol - i was planning to tape all of my small groups, choose one, then include at least a portion of our sharing session after all groups had met.
Kelly - Lana - thanks for the pics! They're wonderful! (Sinetag - you're in one!)
sinetag - how scary!
jtb - both they talked about textures and the sequence of the growth with root seed flower and so on and how the bees pollenate
Lana from Nevada - Kelly, glad they arrived. The conference was terrific. I'm already making plans to take more people next year!
Debbie Mc. - Lana, Can I be one of those that you take?
sinetag - jtb: it sounds like a good basis for a lesson to video
Leigh - I dont know. You have to grow the samples. Kids predict the germiest place , collect scrapings, grow undr a light. usually turns out not to be the places they predict. s this discovery or too techer directed.please excuse my hint and peck typing.
sinetag - jtb: it sounds like a good basis for a lesson to video
Lana from Nevada - Debbie, absolutely! We've got to get our NEA affiliates behind us. What state are you from?
sinetag - now it's all in the execution
sinetag - leigh: think about it. it sounds more inquiry-based than the plaque tablet activity
Debbie Mc. - Ky.
jtb - i know we have already taped now i just need to write up everything any tips the tape was great
Lana from Nevada - Debbie, has your state NEA ever sent anyone?
sinetag - good for you!
sinetag - lana, bring me next time too okay?
Debbie Mc. - Not to my knowledge. But my knowledge is limited.
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, I'm already thinking about how to get you to the conference in January in Reno.
Lana from Nevada - Debbie, I will seriously see if I can do something before next year.
sinetag - kelly, you're being awfully quiet today
Leigh - Thanks. I just wonder if I am on the right track with either one or I need to do something else.
sinetag - hooray!
Debbie Mc. - Lana, thanks! I hope you have a lot of power!
sinetag - leigh: what grade do you teach?
Kelly - I'm just sitting here laughing at all the conversations going on! You all are GREAT!![]()
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, I still have your card. Would you consider making a presentation about NB with me?
Leigh - first
sinetag - consider it? I'd love to!
jtb - kelly i just emailed you. I would love to be part of the mailring
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, I'll get in touch with your personally - after results come out .
Kelly - Sinetag is a "have card, will travel" kind of person!
sinetag - that's me!
Debbie Mc. - I want to "hear" the conversation about the NB presentation. I'm nosy about all things NBC.
sinetag - get in touch with me anytime!
sinetag - i have done *many* presentation on the NB process
Lana from Nevada - I'll have to approach things from two different ways - depending upon whether I'm an achieving candidate or certified.
sinetag - leigh: what else do you teach in science in first grade?
sinetag - lana: who is the audience?
Lana from Nevada - Debbie, my association put me on the IPD committee for Nevada. We have a conference each January. One of the sessions will be on NB. One advantage to being in a state with no NBCTs is that you can be very instrumental.
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, teachers in Nevada
sinetag - what is IPD?
Debbie Mc. - Ky only has 37.
sinetag - why should your candidate status affect what you present?
Lana from Nevada - Instruction and Professional Development
sinetag - ah
Leigh - living vs. nonliving, animals, plants, matter, personal health, movement
Lana from Nevada - Sientag, it won't effect what I present, just how I'll got about presenting it...
sinetag - leigh: so have you started your personal health unit yet? do you have a choice as to what to teach when?
sinetag - lana: got it
Lana from Nevada - Kelly or Anyone! How do portfolio scores compare to AC scores? Either group higher or lower?
Leigh - havent taught it yet. have full freedom.
sinetag - varies from candidate to candidate
Lana from Nevada - Assessment Center
sinetag - leigh: that being the case, you might consider one of the other units rather than the health - i'm not saying personal health won't work, but living/nonliving, animals, plants, etc., all have great inquiry possibilities
sinetag - my porfolio scores were: 2.625, 3.875, 2.75, 3.25, 4.0, and 2.25. my ac scores were 3.625, 2.0, 3.125, and 3.125.
Regina - leigh -- what do you do in your matter unit?
jtb - Leigh, what about life cycles or habitats of animals. that would be great
Lana from Nevada - Here's some exciting NB news! Our state allocated $10,000 last year. There's a bill pending to allocate $500,000 for the coming year to support NB!
Leigh - I thought about incubating chicken eggs, I have a source for the equiptment.
sinetag - good for you lana - were you personally responsible for this?
Anita - Hi, I'm just learning how to use a chat room, but I teach middle school social studies and English. I'll just visit and watch to see what happens. Thanks
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, very interesting (Can you see the laugh in guy?) Were your scores a surprise?
Kelly - Lana - good work! jtb - I just subscribed you to our ring. You'll be getting a message from me that egroups sends out to any new members. It will explain about the resources we have available and how to access them. Welcome!
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, I think I'm a squeaky wheel in our state!
jtb - thanks kelly!!!!!!!!
sinetag - leigh: just a suggestion - try focusing on outcomes for the unit and then work backwards and identify activities (including the one you want to use for the video).. i guarantee you that will help you tremendously in your writtencommentary
Leigh - Regina in my matter unit we do some things with changing forms with matter. I usually make gook.
sinetag - what is the laugh in guy? im so confused
sinetag - lana: only one of my scores was a surprise (the 2.25)
Lana from Nevada - sinetag, was the differences in scores between five and six a surprise to you? And the "Laugh In" guy is a guy from the sixties TV show. Oh, my age is showing!
Susan (NC) - This was a hectic week but I think I made some progress; especially on the science.....
jtb - hi ann, im from sc too
Debbie Mc. - I remember him Lana.
Lana from Nevada - Thanks, Debbie!
Leigh - susan what are you doing in science
Kelly - Lana - I remember Laugh In too........VERY funny show! Way ahead of its time!
Anita - I remember "Laugh In" too.
sinetag - the 2.625 was for my entry 1 which i knew at the time was an area of weakness for me - the 2.0 was for an ac exercise which was an area of weakness (english reading - at the time i had only ever taught reading in spanish, which is pedagogically somewhat different) plus I did not quite finish that exercise at the ac
Debbie Mc. - Don't you feel great about the science Susan?.
sinetag - oh believe my, i remember laughin
Regina - Leigh -- gook sounds like fun -- do you change any other matter? I'm ist gtrade teacher/sp. ed
Lana from Nevada - Yeah! Kelly! We've got to have a scheduled EC-GEN get together at the conference next year - and maybe in LA for the NEA conference too.
sinetag - i was confident i would do well on 5 and i did
sinetag - i was not as sure about 6, but did not expect to do as poorly as i did
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, that entry 1 is a tough one! I'm sweatin' my results!
Susan (NC) - Leigh, I'm doing a unit for K/1 on the 5 senses and have been doing several activities to get them started and I think I'll be using earthworms for the video - does this sound like it will work - you Veterans out there?
Kelly - Lana - we will definitely have a get-together at the NEA conference in LA! I'll get to see to that personally!
sinetag - however, in retrospect i do not think the level of reflection in that entry was what it needed to be
sinetag - remember my entry 1 is MC/GEN
Leigh - Should your ss unit include an arts objective or should the arts be used to help achieve the other goals?
Lana from Nevada - Susan, earthworms sound good - get those kids engaged in inquiry!
jtb - susan do you teach k1 multiage
Susan (NC) - Science was my favorite subject in school ( if you don't count the chemistry in Highschool & college...
Lana from Nevada - Oh, Sinetag, I forgot! Senior moment!
Kelly - Sinetag - I WISH I could have my entry 5 back to do again! It would be MUCH better this time!
sinetag - for us it is the teaching of the writing process, with student work in the areas of fictional narrative and expository writing connected to social studies
sinetag - no doubt kelly
Debbie Mc. - Whoa Kelly! I'm proud of you speaking with such power and positiveness! I'm among some founding "mothers"! This feels great! It's like being present at the writing of the Declaration of Independence.
Sharon (MS) - Hi, Everyone. Hi, Jane!
sinetag - when is nea coming to los angeles?
Kelly - Hey Sharon! How are you?
Leigh - Regina we do some activites with freezing
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, I think i June.
Lana from Nevada - That's IN June!
Sharon (MS) - Hi, Kelly! I see I fit right in today...Laugh In??? Remember it well!!
sinetag - well, i can definitely show all of you the REAL LA if you're interested
Susan (NC) - jtb, I'm a reading teacher but have "borrowed my K & 1st graders"
kidsinpearl - hey everyone--i've been working on this since 4:00 this morning--i am having trouble with my social studies--sharon, how was your presentation at Orlando
Debbie Mc. - I can't go there either! You all are going to have to make videos and send them to me.
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, count me in unless I'm assessing somewhere.
sinetag - you're on
jtb - oh i teach first grade this year but am interested in reading about k1 multiage
sinetag - debbie: why not?
Kelly - Yes - NEA representative assembly will be in LA the end of June/beginning of July. It's always over the 4th.
Susan (NC) - I loved Laugh in.......just thinking about the tricycle falling over makes me laugh!
Debbie Mc. - I'm not in the group for NEA delegates.
Sharon (MS) - Jane, thanks for asking. It went well. At least I got through it! The conference was wonderful.
sinetag - can't any NEA member attend?
Lana from Nevada - Susan, have you seen that skit in "Joseph" by A. L. Weber? Hilarious!
Debbie Mc. - Sinetag, one word--money.
sinetag - where do you live?
Debbie Mc. - Ky.
Lana from Nevada - Sharon, what did you present in Orlando?
Leigh - kid how is your ss going what are you working on
Kelly - We're going to get Debbie to Washington next October for the nbpts conference........
sinetag - you can fly to la for $300
Susan (NC) - Lana, I don't think I know about that skit in Joseph? Any hints about it?
sinetag - it's a tax writeoff
Lana from Nevada - Yes, Kelly, we need to get NEA to help support candidates.
Debbie Mc. - I guess I'm going to have to get a second job to pay for my travel with you guys.
sinetag - that's right
kidsinpearl - i think the farm part is good, but my arts looks ugly to me--i did a collage and i don't like the way it turned out
Lana from Nevada - Susan, it's way off this topic - just a cute skit in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat" - a musical.
Debbie Mc. - Yes, Lana. Namely me.
Sharon (MS) - Lana , I presented Take a Stance for Better Reading Responses (#65 in program)
sinetag - i'm going to have to go in a minute - we have people coming over to comiserate about the upcoming elections
Lana from Nevada - Debbie, absolutely! Kelly will help; she's got pull in NEA.
sinetag - kelly has pull in general!
Debbie Mc. - That's what I hear Lana! Maybe she needs somebody to carry her luggage.
Lana from Nevada - Sharon, I sure wish I'd have known. I would've come to it. I will look it up in my schedule.
Kelly - Sinetag - vote early and vote often!![]()
Leigh - did the collage meet your goals? maybe you could somehow include it in your reflections
jtb - sinetag, thanks for your advice.
Lana from Nevada - Kelly, tell sinetag what your shirt says!
sinetag - indeed!
sinetag - jtb: no problem
Debbie Mc. - Art is objective. Don't worry about the ugly.
Susan (NC) - I have a question for anyone.........my ss & art is about Families and we have done a zillion things but the art part (?) I was thinking about them drawing their "families" of course, writing who is who and then signing it on a square. When all the squares are done, we could make a quilt to hang in the classroom- what do you think?
Kelly - The only pull I have is with my little red wagon. But we ARE getting the attention of NEA - and I am set to be a part of their efforts for candidate support.
sinetag - what does this shirt say?
Susan (NC) - Lana, I know that musical.......duh? where is my brain today?
Debbie Mc. - Sounds like art to me Susan.
Lana from Nevada - Susan, good start. Can they make songs about families? Dramatize family experiences? Do a mural about their families? Role play families? Include all artistic expression.
Leigh - kelly should you include a specific art objective in your ss unit.
Kelly - Leigh - yes. And you have to address how you will assess it. At least that's my understanding. Anybody else care to answer that one?
kidsinpearl - one of my parents is an art teacher and she suggested the collage--she said that it is fine--i don't think i know enough about it to write about it. it is supposed to be an assessment artifact where my goal states the students will explore texture--the kids glued anything and everything on the mural--if it wasn't glued down, they glued it to the collage--
sinetag - kelly: what does your shirt say?
Lana from Nevada - Leigh, yes include an art objective.
Carol - leigh, good question. I haven't understood how to address all the different kinds of art when you need to choose one art objective.
Debbie Mc. - kidsinpearl, does the artifact assess the goal? If so, that should be fine.
Susan (NC) - Lana, we did the Little red hen using puppets; but I had to change it to little "brown" hen ( the puppet was brown!)
kidsinpearl - carol, me either
jtb - how does this sound for ss/art? We doing maps with an integration of pirates. We created our own maps with brown paper and art supplies and we acted liked pirates and hunted for treasures using maps. I guess then we used visual and dramatic arts. ANy other suggestions?
Lana from Nevada - Susan, excellent - puppets are another good art form!
Lana from Nevada - Use to arts to express what they learned..
jtb - I assessed them by the creation of their drawn maps. They had to include a map key and show at least 5 different items. For ex. plains, hills oceans ect
sinetag - do you have access to arts standards and/or an arts framework?
Debbie Mc. - Susan, in a DWOK unit that I have about families, the children design/construct a puppet pal and care for it.
Leigh - Susna I am doing families also. Sounds great. I am covering traditons. I am thinking of having each kid turn in a family recipie. Putting them in a recipie book. using marbling for the background for the pages. marbling is an art form passed through generatons in the turkish families. What do you all think.
kidsinpearl - yes, maybe i need to change my goal to fit the artifact--will that work
jtb - what do you think about my ss/art? Maps and pirates. any thoughts
Carol - Lana, are you saying to build art into the unit and then write about it in your write up? I plan to do economics after christmas with food, grocery shopping and ending with the kids serving parents and guests in a cafe.
sinetag - uh oh multiple kelly's!
Lana from Nevada - Yes, have the children express what they've learned through the arts...
Debbie Mc. - Sinetag said to work backwards, kidsinpearl. Seems to be working for you.
Kelly M - Look out! It's my split personality again! Actually, I got bumped off the net! Had to completely sign on again. Must have been something I said....
kidsinpearl - maps and pirates sound good to me--there is a really good article in Young Children about integrating maps--it's either may or october of this year
Lana from Nevada - So, Kelly, how do you do the smiley faces?
Susan (NC) - jtb, I think the pirate thing could be really neat they could dig for buried treasure using a "treasure map"-
Sharon (MS) - Remember how when you wrote a paper in college and did the outline last? Same principle! At least it was for me. I had a general idea about my goals. But I refined them after I had taught the unit.
sinetag - hope it wasn't my message!
Susan (NC) - I wondered about the smiley face too!
jtb - thanks kidsinpearl, ill look for it
Debbie Mc. - Do pirates fit in with Social Studies? How are you making the connection jtb? For the important concept in SS?
Kelly M -Same as always - I hit the colon key and the end of parenthesis key...this time it's coming out as the smiley face. Didn't used to in this chatroom, now that you mention it.
sinetag -![]()
jtb - debbie, i am focusing on map skills and thats a ss standard for us and bringing in pirates to tie in art. do you think that sounds ok
Leigh - oh the recipe books are christmas gifts for their parents. we will also take proceeds for extra books to go to a charity that benefit families, the children will choose the charity, any thoughts
sinetag -![]()
Kelly M - LOL
Lana from Nevada - Show offs! I have trouble finding the keyboard!
sinetag - now look what you've started!
Kelly M - We all really need a hobby!
kidsinpearl -how cute
Sharon (MS) - Or a life!
Debbie Mc. -![]()
sinetag -![]()
Kelly M - See what nbpts can do for you???????![]()
Carol - guess we better not throw a few of these into our entries, huh??
Sharon (MS) - Debbie,it's because you do NB 24/7!
Lana from Nevada - Sinetag, you're really being mean!
sinetag - i am?
Debbie Mc. - jtb, what are your ss goals? Maybe input from all of these great minds can help you.
sinetag - hey, i don't want to alienate you lana - i want to go to reno with you!
Debbie Mc. - Soooo true, Sharon. I love it.
Lana from Nevada - If I had to do smiley faces for my portfolios, I'd have all ones! ;(
Debbie Mc. -I'm sorry. I ADD.
Lana from Nevada - Reno, here we come, Sinetag!
sinetag - : ) but without the space in between the 2 characters
jtb - one is that students will use a map key and be able to identify locations.![]()
Leigh - Susan I am impaired also.
Lana from Nevada - Okay, Debbie, now you're rubbin' it in too!
sinetag - lana, i am so there!
sinetag - ready for some 21
Debbie Mc. - I love to learn new things. Sounds good for one jtb.
sinetag - ; )![]()
Lana from Nevada - How about Megabucks?!
sinetag - : (![]()
Debbie Mc. - Hey, sinetag. I'll send 5 dollars with you to Reno and you can win enough to finance all my conventions next year.
Lana from Nevada - Where the h____ is the "end of parenthesis"?
Debbie Mc. - Maybe it just works for people who have AOL Instant Messenger.
Debbie Mc. - Susan, hit shift, colon and then the parentheses. You have to experiment.
Kelly M - Look at your keyboard. Hit the caps key and the "colon" one. Then with caps still pressed hit the 0 at the top - the caps version is the mark that would be at the end of a pair of parentheses.....
Leigh -![]()
Lana from Nevada - Smiley learnin' impaired here. HELP!
Kelly M - Maybe I could make a description of it and put it in our Files!![]()
Lana from Nevada - We don't have AOL here in my neck of the woods...
Debbie Mc. - It's a good thing there's no technology entry.![]()
kidsinpearl - is anyone going to the naeyc meeting this week in atlanta
Leigh - Someone please give on honest opinion about my ss recipe book project.
Debbie Mc. - Your doing families Leigh? I think if you can justify that recipe book as art in your write up then it will be considered art. It's all in how you write it. But that's just my opinion and you know what they say about those.
Lana from Nevada - Leigh, just make sure you tie it to artistic expression. It really seems that it's HOW you write something up that matters.
Debbie Mc. - sinetag, are you gonna take me up on the 5 dollar deal?
Lana from Nevada - Debbie, make it six dollars. It takes three for each Megabucks play.
Carol - Off the top of your head, can anyone think of art that goes with a study of food and economics? I thought of decorative placemats, menus, centerpieces, a tape of the chldren singing playing during the cafe....
Debbie Mc. - Alright, make it six.
Susan (NC) - I'll send $6.00 too!
Debbie Mc. - What about signs for the cafe?
Lana from Nevada - How about the kids creating their own recipes, Carol? That could be great and even fun for assessors to read. .
Susan (NC) - Carol, could you do a restruarant thing with menus and cooking simple dishes to go along with it?
Debbie Mc. - You could always do art with vegetables. Have you seen any of those?
Lana from Nevada - How about singing waiters and waitresses? That could really be fun!
Debbie Mc. - I've always thought that the bottom of a bunch of celery would make great candle holders if you hollowed out the middle.
Carol - I'm making notes, thanks for the ideas, I'm making notes. We will brainstorm favorite recipes and eventually decide on what to serve. The kids will shop and cook and serve. Job applications, etc. will be included for literacy. Think of the math, too! But of course I will only be able to write what goes with my goals
Susan (NC) - kidsinpearl- there has been a lot on the list lately about the NAEYC conference; wish I was going-
Lana from Nevada - Carol, very smart to include other subjects!
jtb - bye you guys it's been great, I have to go take a shower and get ready for a date. Whenis the next meeting?
Debbie Mc. - jtb--a date?
jtb - yes, my boyfriend and i are going out
Debbie Mc. - Would we approve of him?
Lana from Nevada - I'll sign off too. Hubby and I are headin' for a Glen Campbell show in Mesquite, Nevada. Anyone remember him?
kidsinpearl - got to run too--i'm tired and i have no lesson plans for next week and progress reports due monday--have a great week![]()
Susan (NC) - It has been so long since I've had a "date" .....only use them in recipes! ha.
Debbie Mc. - Galveston, oh Galveston. I can hear...
jtb - yes, he's a great guy. We have been best friends forever and started dating 3 years ago.
Sharon (MS) - Wasn't he on Laugh-In???
Carol - i wish someone was taking me out to eat --speaking of cafes???!!!
Debbie Mc. - Well, I guess it's all of us no-lifers left.
Kelly M - Geez you guys! Dates - boyfriends! I'm impressed! And yes, I remember good ol' Gentle On My Mind Glen! Tell hubby hi for me Lana! He's such a gentleman!
Susan (NC) - Oh no.....not the laugh in again! ha
Debbie Mc. - have a good time jtb.
Carol - enjoyed the smiles--:)
Sharon (MS) - Debbie, Is there a correlation between the nolifers and remembering Glen Campbell and Laugh-in?
Kelly M - I could identify with the report card bit - that's all though!
Lana from Nevada - You guys are great! Can't wait for LA. By the time I get to Phoenix!!! Harrie says Hi to you Kelly!
Susan (NC) - Wish I had a life........I can't tell you how many times last week I woke up thinking about something that I could use or write about for NB.......that's the problem, all I do is think about it - - - it is time for action!
Lana from Nevada - Bye!- Sharon, no correlation at all....
Debbie Mc. - Susan, it will never end.
Debbie Mc. - At least we have memories of before NBC.
Leigh - I also do another unit in ss I have thought about using. we do santas workshop to study economics, wants vs needs, asssembly lines etc. we make ornaments and sell them to each other in a shop. the kids are elves (producers) they earn a wage to shop with, any thoughts Lots of arts and crafts. all my children clebrate christmas
Debbie Mc. - Economics is part of our ss curriculum.
Debbie Mc. - Leigh I think that it depends on you and your students. I don't think the unit has to be fancy. You just have to write it up using standards.
Susan (NC) - I need to know what I should be thinking about in the "artifacts" that I submit? Any suggestions that goes along with my families thing?
sinetag - i remember the glen campbell show
sinetag - for what it's worth, i have it on *good authority* that scores will indeed not be out until after thanksgiving
Debbie Mc. - I do too sinetag. Remember Bobbie somebody who sang The Day Billie Joe McCallister jumped off the Tallahachee Bridge. She was on there once.
sinetag - that's right
Debbie Mc. - Susan, remember that two must be instructional and two must be assessment.
Leigh - debbie I am not sure what you are getting at, could you elaborate
Susan (NC) - If the scores don't come out until after Thanksgiving; I wish all of our CIW something good to be thankful for!
Debbie Mc. - I mean that you have to prove that you're using the standards. It doesn't matter if it's cutsy or fancy.
Debbie Mc. - Think about which unit is more meaningful for your students needs, interests, abilities.
Sharon (MS) - Susan, also be sure each artifact addresses a goal. Through your four artifacts , you should cover all 3 of your goals. Does that make sense?
Leigh - my mind is running in circles. i cannot make a single decision. i ahve gone though some many ideas for both the ss and science.
sinetag - Bobbie Gentry!
Susan (NC) - Has anybody gone back to the archives and read the chat from the previous week? I do it all the time, especially since I am always LATE getting on.......
Sharon (MS) - Sinetag...you go girl
Kelly - Sinetag - I haven't heard anything about scores other than posts on the nbpts site. Those seem to be saying the week after Thanksgiving, too.
Debbie Mc. - Right! I hate it when I can't remember all of something. It was the third of June another sleepy dusty delta dayyyy. I was out choppin cotton and....
sinetag - sharon: i had to ask my girlfriend, she's the only person in this house who knows anything about country music
sinetag - kelly: i heard *after thanksgiving* from that ex-boss of mine i pointed out to you in orlando
Susan (NC) - Thanks Sharron & Debbie, as usual - you guys make a lot of sense. It is so frustrating reading the standards and then asking yourself, what did I just read?
Debbie Mc. - Well, Leigh you have to be the one to make those decisions. Have you tried rereading the standards to see if one seems to fit better.
sinetag - hey my guests are here, so I've got to go
Debbie Mc. - You're very welcome Susan. I know that I'm a rambler and often make no sense at all.
Kelly - sinetag - I figure the scores will get here when they get here. I suspect that nbpts will put something on the chatboard when they know a definite date. They did that last year.
Kelly - Sinetag - have a good week! Talk to you later. Fingers crossed for Tuesday!
Sharon (MS) - Yes, Kelly, and they also slipped up and posted more than they intended also!
Sharon (MS) - Bye, Sinetag
Debbie Mc. - I haven't chatted with you since way back last winter on the egroups site that I can't ever get to.
Leigh - Thanks debbie. Perhaps I need to reread the standards and take a day to clear my head.
Tracy H. - Hi to all....usually my computer is in use at this time by my husband!
Debbie Mc. - Sometimes it helps to separate yourself for a day or so Leigh.
Leigh - The ering and this site have really helped. I know NO ONE that has been through this experience.
Sharon (MS) - Leigh, where do you live?
Debbie Mc. - I didn't either Leigh. That's why we try to help!![]()
Susan (NC) - Has anyone got any plans for Thanksgiving? This is going to sound awful but I hate having to rearrage my guest room because all of my NB stuff is in it, on the bed, (you get the picture) I can't tell them not to come.......it's my parents!
Leigh - NC near charlotte
Tracy H. - The e-ring helped me more than any of the candidate workshops, etc., that were provided by our state...and their were quite a few.
Carol - Leigh, you sound like you are off to a great start. I love the egroup ring and my mentoring group.
Debbie Mc. - Susan, Stack it, move it, then unstack it the way you had it laid out. Place it in a very safe place for the Holiday.
Susan (NC) - Leigh, have you heard from NCCAT?
Debbie Mc. - Hi Kathi.
Kelly - Hi Kathi - can we help you?
Tracy H. - Susan, it's not awful! We've all been there. Clutter became a way of life during my candidate year...just be glad you have a spare room to stuff things in!![]()
Debbie Mc. - I had a hard time packing away my stuff when I was through. I left it there for about three months.
Sharon (MS) - I still have a box of drafts!
Kelly - Mine took over my dining room three years ago.....and is still here! I think of it as just part of the decor now!
Sharon (MS) - Is that ridiculous or what? Why don't I throw them away?
Leigh - susan you could give up you r room and sleep on the couch. That is what I would do rather than move your stuff, ha ha. I have not heard from NCCAT> I called yesterday, no one ahs returned my call. letters went out the week of the 23rd
Leigh - susan have you
Tracy H. - I still have a box of videos in the garage...lots of notes in there from books, etc. Couldn't bear to part with it all!
Debbie Mc. - I have mine filed but it stays out because I'm always digging through it for somebody.
Sharon (MS) - As a mentor, I'm ALMOST (but not quite) as nervous as I was last year.
Tracy H. - I hear you, Sharon...I know several candidates here that I'm keeping my fingers crossed for!!
Susan (NC) - Leigh, I heard last week, I'm in for the week of December 4-8 .
Kathi - Hi! I'm a Newbie! I went to a meeting on getting started on Mon. I met an NBCT who had attended the conference in Orlando. She found the info on mentoring to be very helpful.
Debbie Mc. - Congratulations Susan. Enjoy you're week!
Tracy H. - When you've mentored, it's kind of the same feeling I used to get at my daughter's piano recitals...pride and nervousness both!!
Debbie Mc. - I totally agree Tracy. I'm even nervous about the entries I read for people on the ring.
Tracy H. - Oh, yes, me too, Debbie!!!
Debbie Mc. - I don't have the entries because I destroy those but I have the comments that I made. I'd love to compare their scores to my comments.
Kelly - Kathi - That's great that you have a mentor right there. Are you a member of our email ring?
Leigh - That's great Susan!! I have a feeling that since I have not heard anything I probably was not so lucky.
Kathi - Yes, I have been for a few months and value all the great advice
pattie - no help just GIVE ME MY SCORES!! tee hee
Carol - Any words of wisdom to help me start actually writing? I do all sorts of avoidance things--like sitting at this computer! Thinking of all you waiting--I know it will be agonizing!
pattie - start typing the questions of the entry you want to work on........
Debbie Mc. - The first entry that I worked on was the hardest to write. But I was very naive. I thought that I had to write them in the order they were in the portfolio.
Tracy H. -Pattie, I remember those feelings so well!! I keep thinking "This time last year I was going crazy waiting for scores!!!"
Kelly - Carol - make a word document for each entry. Type in all of the question for each one. That way, when you open one of the documents, you're not staring at a blank page!
pattie - just back from an ALL star soccer game. First chat I have been to in a LONG time.
Susan (NC) - Hey Pattie, I loved your poem! Have gotten lots of postcards?
Leigh - Carol , I am doing the same things
pattie - YES, got one from Alaska today. My kids love getting mail. The list folks have been great.
Carol - Thanks. I made and labeled a disk for each entry last weekend. We are talking baby steps here.
Susan (NC) - I need to start thinking about dinner guys, until next Saturday - take care & bye for now
pattie - The list is full of feelings about scores. The waiting is almost a comfort right now, cause as of this moment there is hope that we ALL certified, yeah!!
Tracy H. - Carol...it helped me to think of the Nike slogan...you know, "Just do it!" Try sitting down, looking at a question, and writing absolutely anything that comes to mind...you can edit later, and it might help you get started. Worked for me...
Carol - Thanks for the encouragement. We have workday Monday and tues off, so I WILL get started!!!
pattie - LKelly, is someone going to post the stages candidates go through that ya'll learned about at the NB conference? Someone made reference to it on the ring.
Sharon (MS) - I agree with Tracy. Just get something down. Get a first draft. You can work from there.
Leigh - I must go also. Going out to celebrate my tenth anniversary.
Tracy H. - Happy anniversary, Leigh!
Debbie Mc. - Congratulations Leigh. Have fun.
pattie - happy anniversary.......!!
pattie - A good short week sounds wonderful and NO bus duty.
Beth - anyone here know what a social studies inventory might be?
Debbie Mc. - Beth are you on the ring?
Beth - no i don't think so, just stumbled upon this site
Debbie Mc. - Well, I guess I'm off to finish my laundry.
Debbie Mc. - Kelly, have a good week and keep me posted.
Kelly M - I'll talk to you all later! Have a good week!
