Susan (NC) - Hi- is anyone here but me?
Susan - is this for the NBPTS EC Gen?
Susan (NC) - Yes, usually a lot of people are here by now -
judy - susan, i am logged on
judy - I think we are the only ones on
Susan (NC) - Susan, I can't believe we signed in with the same color.........let me change - be right back!
Susan - Judy, I just logged on, only Susan from NC on also
Susan (NC) - This is my "normal color" anyway!
Susan - I'm trying to figure the mechanics of this first
Susan (NC) - Are you both candidates or CIW's?
Susan - O.K. I figured the correct button
Susan - We're both candidates, what is a CIW?
Susan (NC) - It is pretty easy - once you get the hang of it!
Patsi K in MN - Hello Everyone!
Susan (NC) - A CIW is a "Candidate in Waiting"..........in other words - waiting for their scores later this month!
Susan (NC) - Hi Patsi-
Susan - are you a candidate
Patsi K in MN - I think it is quiet today because of the convention going on for NB right now. I know Kelly won't make it today. Or at least I don't think she will.
Susan (NC) - I am a banker; had to redo a couple of entries-
Patsi K in MN - hi Susan (NC) are you a CIW. I am
Patsi K in MN - How about Susan?
Patsi K in MN - Hi Judy.
Susan - any ideas on including cultural arts in the video for community
Susan (NC) - Susan, I used the old generation maybe Patsi could answer your questions?
Patsi K in MN - Ahhh! A question -I feel brain dead as I wait for scores! I should go grab my binder with my notes from last year. I'll be right back.
Susan - last year's standards are different than this year. That seems to be a problem, no one knows exactly what is expected this year
Susan (NC) - Where is everybody from.........you know where I live. Ha!
Susan - Judy, have you gotten anymore ideas.
Susan - Amanda was giving me an idea for a mask she did out of foil one year, you may be able to use it for the arts
Susan - I'm from Western NC
Susan (NC) - Susan, I'm in western NC too! Bryson City to be exact - are we close by?
Patsi K in MN - Shoot. I have it tucked somewhere - in a logical place I am sureBut can't find it now. I know that I visited several sites about Arts standards to get ideas -
Patsi K in MN - This is a link to the National Standards for Arts Education - http://artsedge.kennedy-center.org/professional_resources/standards/natstandards/index.html
Susan - thanks, I'm copying these down
Patsi K in MN - Here is another Arts link - professional development articles - http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/archives/arts.shtml
Patsi K in MN - Hello moshale
Susan - I had a Thanksgiving unit on diversity, etc, but I didn't have the cultural arts. I have the children creating a 'family feather' but not sure I can count that. I may have them role-play and then discuss their feelings.
Patsi K in MN - Role-play, puppetry, songs, dance ..... Role-play is a good one I think.
Susan - I feel like I have to make-up things for this video.
Patsi K in MN - The key for us last year was integration and making things seem like they connected seamlessly, not just a cute project thrown in among the unit.
Patsi K in MN - Hi AggieB!
moshale - Hi everyone, I'm new. I hope you don't mind if I join in.
Susan - I read in the dramatic role-play in standards but it doesn't seem cultural arts enough. I'll tape it and see what others think
Patsi K in MN - Susan, the video creates alot of pressure because with young ones they don't always cooperate. I found that I taped endlessly and then just watched and transcripted and found what would work.
Susan - Hi Moshale, I'm new too.
aggieb - Hi
Patsi K in MN - Glad you are "lurking" moshale. The EC_GEN ring and this chat are a great support.
Susan - I agree and I've taped lots, my children a ok with taping, but there is not a cultural art activity everytime I film
Patsi K in MN - Susan and moshale, how different are the portfolio directions this year. I started to download them today but the transfer was interrupted. I am a multitasker so I can't just let my computer do one thing at a time....
Patsi K in MN - Susan, what is your defintion of "cultural art"?
Susan - Thanksgiving and Christmas are good areas for community/social studies. I wanted to have a good tape prior to holidays so I can be writing it up
aggieb - I know this year that it spells out that it can be small group
moshale - I did a video the other day that completely bombed. Susan, I also feel like I'm making things up.
Susan - arts-visual arts, dance, music, and drama according to the standards
aggieb - I went to a meeting and the standards definitely have not changes
ginger - hi, everyone!
Susan (NC) - Did Kelly & Debbie Mc say they were not going to be here today? I missed last week...........
aggieb - Oh the wait,, oh the wait is killing me
ginger - i know kelly is in San Diego at the NB confrence
Susan (NC) - aggie b - I know the feeling; somehow waiting doesn't seem to be such a big deal the 2nd time around!!
aggieb - Moshale, you will get the right connection and the right video.. patience will do it for you
ginger - moshale, what do you teach?
Susan - Will this NB conference give clarity on some of the new standards?
aggieb - Thanks, susan (NC) I am prepared to bank!
moshale - I teach kindergarten
ginger - hi, diana
Diana - Hello all!
Patsi K in MN - don't let a video bomb get you down. I figured I would do my lesson and the tape would be great, however, I taped for 4 weeks and was lucky to get what I neededKdg students don't cooperate for video too easily. Keep trying!
ginger - oh, cute kids!
moshale - I'm also from NC near Charlotte
aggieb - Moshale, I am kindergarten also , and a CIW
Diana - I didn't get a good science video until the end of March and my portfolio was due in April.
aggieb - Oh I am from NC also on the east coast near wilm.
moshale - This is a really stupid question, but I have to ask. What is a CIW?
ginger - hey, debbie!
Patsi K in MN - Hi Diana!
DebbieD - Moshale - not stupid at all - Candidate in Waiting
aggieb - What questions can we help the new candidates with
DebbieD - Hi Ginger, Hi Patsi, Hi all!
Susan - I asked the same question,
ginger - i had so many people trying to help me tape, and there was one disaster after another. My good tapes finally came from borrowing my friend's camcorder and a tripod!
Diana - Do we have any candidates here today?
Susan - I teach 2nd grade, I've chosen 4 children to discuss literacy
ginger - I am a CIW.....a nervous one!
ginger - susan, i teach 2nd too
aggieb - I went to a meeting of new candidates today.. Make sure you read the standards over and over before even beginning to do the portfolio and videos.
moshale - I have a question about the science and math entry? I am working on food groups and this is a stretch, but I wondered if this would be a good topic. Here goes: Does the size of a fruit affect the number of seeds it will have? Remember this is kindergarten.
Susan - In literacy, do I just tell about what we do in literacy and what I see the children need and how I try to meet their needs?
ginger - it's good that you picked at least 4 kids to save literacy stuff from
Diana - moshale - that question could work - is it something your kids are interested in?
DebbieD - Susan, I certified under the old generation portfolio, but aren't there questions you need to answer?
ginger - moshale, that's a valid question. Think about what you need to teach the kids about. Does it fit? Do the kids express interest in it?
Diana - Debbie - the new literacy is VERY similar to the old - just 2 students instead of one and fewer writing samples.
aggieb - Susan, it helped me to read the questions to know what NB was looking for even before I started any enty, especially , how my entry will be socred
moshale - They like digging around in the fruits and pulling the seeds out. I felt like they could compare and contrast the fruit, sort the seeds and count them, then do a graph, all the while talking about the original question. Since my first idea bombed, I'm leary about everything now.
DebbieD - Susan - make sure you answer the questions and describe what you do for literacy very specifically about the children you feature.
Susan - There are questions and I've read them over and over. They are sometimes vague. Can I do a narrative on the children
Diana - How Will My Entry Be Scored? is absolutely the most important information in the instructions. Study it carefully. Each bullet contains one of the aspects that assessors will look for.
ginger - susan, list everything you do all day long that involves literacy. Just make a list and then see where each child uses those things.
DebbieD - Susan - it may read like a narrative, but you might want to start out by just answering the questions, then see where that leads you. You may find it's less vague as you answer.
Evelyn - hi everyone. I am glad to see someone is working on the Lit Entry. I have had a hard time organizing that entry!
Diana - moshale - i think you are on the right track. - don't be discouraged. getting a good video is a challenge for many reasons unrelated to your ability to teach
Patsi K in MN - I'll be back in a minute....
ginger - susan, remember to include things like having a classroom library and different types of books
DebbieD - Susan and others working on literacy - remember to include specific ways you worked with the parents to help their child in literacy.
ginger - moshale, i was really stuck on each entry so don't be discouraged.
Diana - I think the main challenge in the new literacy requirements is fitting it all in the space constraints - but every candidate must face that same challenge.
liz - hi all.I'm late...working on the ss port..ugh
aggieb - speaking, listening, writing, reading and viewing should all be included in the literacy
ginger - hi, liz
DebbieD - It's so hard to wait. I have lots of confidence in you.
aggieb - I agree, it has hard to tell it all in the page restraints, but be concise, and clear,, you can do it
DebbieD - liz - do you have ss questions?
Diana - 2nd grade teachers sometimes get so wrapped up in their reading and writing instruction that they forget to include oral language - make sure your instruction covers all three
liz - ? on the ss port. Should I have an art goal, and ss goal?
ginger - i think one of the best things i did was have my older son read my entry. He could tell right away where i could be more concise
DebbieD - Liz-That seems to be how many candidates organize it.Do the directions speak to that?
ginger - i don't know, liz. I did, but i'm only a ciw
Susan - give me an idea on the viewing in literacy
evelyn - any tips on saving space. Does the contextual info count as a page on the Lit entry?
aggieb - I will be back also... got to run to see my dad,
ginger - hi, evelyn
liz - very vague...I actually now have 2 ss goals but within one is an art skill
ginger - no, it doesn't evelyn
Patsi K in MN - When are the portfolios due this year?
Sherri (KY) - Hi everyone
ginger - hi, sherri
ginger - liz, you'll have a community goal, too, i think
liz - After completing the whole thing I now think the art should be as big as the ss......!???????
Patsi K in MN - Just a reminder to all new candidates - read, read, read, read, read, the standards. That hasn't been stressed as much this fall as it was last year.
evelyn - Thank goodness. I knew I was right on that. I get some misinformation at times. I have to double check myself on everything.
Diana - portfolio due dates vary depending on when you apply
moshale - I went to NCCAT in NC for a week and this may not help much, but our mentor said that most people double space at the end of each sentence, (we were taught to do this years ago). She said to single space to save a few extra lines.
ginger - evelyn, sometimes i had to double check before i gave myself permission to breathe!
evelyn - anyone working on Lit who would like to set up a chat and go through each question for clarity?
DebbieD - Moshale - that's good advice. Also, justifying your margins can help.
ginger - that helps, moshale.
Patsi K in MN - Regarding the double spacing - I automatically do that, so I did find and change. I searched for 2 spaces and had the software change it to 1. That saved some time!
Diana - liz - i think the ss is more important than the art, but the art should be authentically integrated - in other words it is a critical part of the instruction - you should definitely have an art goal
liz - ginger, did you hae one community goal, one ss goal and one art goal?
ginger - also, when you think your margins are correct, measure them with a ruler. sometimes a printer's margins are larger than they have to be
Susan - speaking of the art goal, it needs to be shown in the video to my understanding
DebbieD - Patsi - that's a good idea. One way to do this is to tape yourself reading the standards, and play it in the car whenever you drive. Course, if you have your kids with you they'll be bored!
Patsi K in MN - With our portfolios due in April last year, I really didn't get serious until after christmas about writing. I was able to complete everything in time, but did work almost non-stop.
evelyn - The community goal is now called Social Skills Goals.
ginger - yes, liz. But i'm a ciw so i don't know if i'm right!
ginger - that's easier to understand, evelyn!
Diana - liz - ginger's advice is good - at least one goal for each discipline
ginger - i basically had no life for months while i worked on my entries
Patsi K in MN - I did tape the standards and listen. I also scanned them, did an optical read of them so that they were text I could manipulate and put myself into them. Where it said a profession teacher did.... I entered I do... etc.
Diana - yes - the art should be visible in the video if at all possible
liz - ugh.I have to redo.I feel like my brain is mush
moshale - Ginger, while you were videotaping did you have to change your plans repeatedly or just keep taping until you got something you could use?
Patsi K in MN - I also had a goal for each area: social, social studies and arts.
Diana - liz - can we clarify anything to help you un-mush?
ginger - liz, take a shower, let a friend look at what you are doing, breathe...
ginger - moshale, i thought i only had one good lesson for each unit, til a friend helped me think of more lessons that would fit the taping perameters. Speak to a teacher you know who can brainstorm with you
Patsi K in MN - one thing that helped me clarify as I wrote was to use colors in the text I wrote.
Susan - ladies, you have helped me, I'v written down several ideas. Does this meet each Sat. at 4?
liz - Did you have skills in each one of those categories?
ginger - yes, susan, sometimes there are lots of us, sometimes just a few
Diana - hi tracy!
tracyOK - Hello, all.
Diana - yes, this group meets every sat at 4
DebbieD - Moshale, I know you asked Ginger, but one thing that helps the taping is to tape a lot, have the machine running as much as you can. When I certified, we had to tape for our entry on building classroom community. My kids brought up a problem in the morning when the tape wasn't running, and brainstormed ways to solve it. So when we discussed it later I had the camera going. That discussion took about 15 seconds, and I thought I was done for. Then someone else brought up another problem, and that discussion wound up being the tape I used! You never know!
Patsi K in MN - Susan, my website has a ton of links from the EC_GEN ring and this chat last year - feel free to check them out at abc123kindergarten.com - scroll down and you will see the ec-gen link
Diana - liz - yes you should have some specific objectives related to each subject area
moshale - Debbie, what grade do you teach?
evelyn - Patsi. Your website is amazing. You must have very good time management skills. Your help will be so appreicated by all who see your site!
DebbieD - Moshale, when I certified I taught second. This year I'm teaching 5th.
Susan - Thanks, I need to go but I'll be back next week.
Patsi K in MN - I agree DebbieD - the tape ran all the time in my room. I didn't have a helper tape me, I just used a tripod and if I needed to move the camera I just stepped behind it and did.
Patsi K in MN - bye susan!
liz - so I basically shuld have 3 goals (ss. soc.sk, art with objectives under each?
Diana - liz - the goals for the arts don't have to be technical - this bugged me too until i looked at my state standards. i found they included things like understanding that art is linked to culture - what a natural tie-in for social studies
Patsi K in MN - The website is a hobby and alot of fun. It is my file cabinet of sorts:O)
ginger - i have to get some things done. Report cards due this week! See you on the ring!
DebbieD - Bye - ginger, I'll be thinking of you this week.
liz - right now I have 2 ss with the art and social skill within one of those.I guess I should redo?
Karin - Hello everyone! I am new to National Boards and chatting. I teach third grade so I am really at the upper end. I am really having a hard time with integrating all of the arts. Any suggestions on how many of the arts we should integrate.
Karin - Hello everyone! I am new to National Boards and chatting. I teach third grade so I am really at the upper end. I am really having a hard time with integrating all of the arts. Any suggestions on how many of the arts we should integrate.
Diana - Liz - you may not need to redo the entry - just clarify your goals and objectives - break the art and social skills out from the social studies
Patsi K in MN - Welcome Karin!
evelyn - Liz. I am doing SS on Native Americans as that is my heritage and we have a local tribe. I have around 6 Social Studies Goals, 4 or five Art goals and 3 Social Skills goals. I think it will vary depending on what you do. What do others think?
Diana - Karin - include whatever arts naturally fit with your social studies goals - there is no magic number - it could be 1 or 6 or....
DebbieD - Karin Hi! I don't know of many 3rd grade teachers in EC-Gen! Many second grade teachers opt for MC-Gen to avoid the preschool stuff. Do you have young 3rd graders?
liz - I'm third
evelyn - Hi and welcome Karin. I teach first and am a candiate.
evelyn - Anyone else working on Lit? If not, I guess I need to run.
moshale - Is anyone working on science and math?
Diana - Liz - lots of third grade teachers choose EC-Gen - you should do fine - I think having older students is an advantage for the social studies entry as they are much more able to discuss and demonstrate how they are able to interact and respect each other
DebbieD - Evelyn, feel free to ask your questions on the email list. You'll get answers there too!
Diana - Eveylyn, I just have a couple of minutes - I have assessed lit - what do you want to know?
Karin - I just barely made the 51% FOR THIS AREA> Many of my students just turned 8 over the summer. I taught preschool handicapp for three years. I feel very comfortable with preschool, I got stuck in third grade last year when I looped with my second grade class. I thought i could go back........
DebbieD - Karin, I didn't mean to suggest you shouldn't be EC-Gen, I'm sure you'll be fine!
Patsi K in MN - liz, when you think about redoing an entry because it's not going the way you would like, consider saving your draft before you start to change it - you may find there were things that you liked and would like to have back, if they are deleted they are gone!
evelyn - Oh gosh. I guess what confuses me is that if their samples are a month apart, they have made progress, so my goals change over the period of time. I can't figure out how to discuss it in 13 pages.
liz - good point
Diana - yes - the page limits are challenging - when you analyze the work samples, concentrate on what the sample shows that they CAN do already - then think about how you will build on those skills
moshale - Do you all get on-line every Saturday? I think this is great!
tracyOK - Patsi is making a very good point...about redoing...I know I came back and changed things a million times before mailing off my "box."
Patsi K in MN - evelyn - just discuss it and don't sweat the pages yet - unless you are really crunched for time. Once you get all your thoughts out you can organize, cut, whatever, but then you can decide....
DebbieD - Moshale - the meeting is here every Saturday, the people change from week to week.
Diana - moshale - we are "on-line" every day at yahoogroups
Diana - evelyn - patsi's advice is good - sometimes after you've written everything you can see the patterns and things that can be clumped together to save space
DebbieD - Well, I better get back to house cleaning and 5th grade paper work. Best wishes to all waiting candidates!
liz - thanks everyone..
Patsi K in MN - I need to go also - my daughter is on the phone arranging a sleep over, I better go see what is up!
Diana - Sorry - but my daughter just called to say she is stranded without a ride home - gotta go
Diana - candidates - if you are new to this chat - this is a great place to ask questions - check out the EC_Gen list on yahoogroups too. Bye!
