Donna - Hello,I am new to the chat
Annie - me, too
Chris - Hi Donna, me to...I'm looking for the EC_Gen chat...is this the right place??
Monika - new here too...uh oh!
Donna - yes, I think this is it
Kim - Any new bankers?
Monika - are you all just starting? (I am)
Chris - I'm a new banker!!
Kim - So am I, Chris
Monika - I have read that term often...is a banker someone in their 2nd year?
Donna - I am just starting the process. Hopng for some help on entries
Kim - What are you redoing?
Chris - Entry 2 &4 I think
Monika - same here Donna - but I haven't even received my box yet
Chris - How about you Kim?
ginger - hi,monica
Becca - Hi everyone!
Kim - I am not postive either. I keepplaying with the numbers
Monika - hiya ginger
ginger - hi, chris. I am a banker, too
liz - Hi everyone...I have a question about the new iteracy entry...am I to write goals and objectives? It seems so unclear
Donna - I have my box and am working on lessons to video
ginger - hi, becca
Kim - I also changed grades this year to 4th and am unsure of what to do since I will have to borrow a class
Monika - I shouldn't be here should I Ginger?? =)
ginger - yes, you most defintely should, monika
Donna - why not Monika?
sue - monika- welcome! you'll get lots of valualbe information
Kim - How many points is it feasible(sp?) to raise in one year?
ginger - sorry, liz i don't know the answer to that question
Monika - I am sooo clueless in this process & don't even know what to ask...just listening, that's all
Chris - I have the same question Kim...I need quite a few.
sue - monika- what have you started on so far?
ginger - so, enjoy listening and share a; smile when you can1
sue - LOL! I was like that thru most of the process. I does get better
Monika - nothing!! Haven't rec'd box
Donna - you will learn a lot by listening Monika, they have been a valuable source of info!
ginger - so, who is stuck or has a question?
Kim - I actually did OK on entry 4. Maybe I can offer some help . I certainly need it in other areas.
Kay - Ginger, you are such a positive person on the ring
Monika - the more I learn, the less I understand the process though
ginger - i still haven't even reread my entry that I am going to redo....maybe tonight
liz - me...I need to know if I should set leteracy goals and objectives or just speak in generalities??
ginger - thanks, kay, this ring is a lifesaver to me!
sue - ok monika- this is what you need to start on--- find all your documentation for your accomplishments and start writing #4
Chris - Kim, how did you organize your accomplishments...did you group any of them?
Kim - Ginger, are you redoing the same lesson?
liz - **LITERACY
Monika - sue - would love to, but don't know what # 4 is
ginger - yes, monika, also start saving peices of writing from a variety of sources
Bonita - Hi to all. Monika, I know exactly how you feel. I didn't even know what questions to ask last year, but I caught on quickly and you will too. Hang in there!
Donna - Monika, it will become clearer as you continue to read on. I assume you are on the EC_GEN listserv?
Monika - yep...as of yesterday I think
ginger - #4 is you accomplishments
sue - chris- I group some of the smaller ones for more impact--ie. website, newsletter, folders
Becca - I just finished my draft of SS and now I am moving on to literacy-
Kim - Chris, I really focused around working with students outside ths class.. I did home visits, I offered after school activities, etc. and really stayed in contact consistently with the families
ginger - monika, i think i heard that you can go online and look at what you will be required to do before you even get the box
sue - liz-- be specific. you need to prove you know each child
sue - oops grouped I mean
liz - That is what I am doing. Have you looked at the questions Becca?
Kim - Does anyone know if you can borrow a classfor the literacy section?
Monika - true..I downloaded it but can't read it at Works...all jargon fonts, will get help at school Monday I hope
Bonita - Is anyone else working on redoing ss and literacy entries?
ginger - i agree with kim. Start developing two way communication with parents, not just you telling them what's happening, but giving them a way to talk to you
sue - kim- I did that with other ones, too
liz - so I do need to write some specific goals and objectives..although it really doesn't ask??
Chris - I was thinking of grouping my web site, weekly progress reports, literacy logs, and newsletters as one great big Family Partnership log.
ginger - i am redoing literacy, bonita
Kim - I am redoing literacy
Donna - Monika, you can get a lot from the website- get the permission form the parents need to sign
sue - kim- you can but it will be harder for you to assess their growth unless you see them frequently
Bonita - Kim. it is my understanding that you can borrow a class for your literacy entry.
ginger - Chris, do you have a way for parents to respond to the progress reports and have some say on the literacylogs?
sue - chris- wait and see where you need the information
lori/fl - bonita, i am redoing ss, literacy and science
Bonita - Thanks, Ginger and Kim.
Kim - That is exactly what i am worried about. I can redothat and the science video and have more leeway with points. What is the chance of getting points up?
sue - lori- I just posted a list of science resources to the group
ginger - sweet lori, hang in there. A friend of mine redid 3 last year, and made it this year!
Chris - I do ginger it is all two-way communication.
ginger - that's great, chris
lori/fl - 'm also looking at redoing two AC...as insurance
sue - kim- did you play with your numbers?
Donna - Sue where are your science resources
liz - Can anyone help me with the literacy entry?
sue - EC GEN groups on Yahoo
Bonita - Lori, you are brave! I need to redo all three, but made the choice to redo only two entries this year, as I want to read more on science/math. I need a better grip on the"Big Idea". I want to really know what I am doing to make all this work worthwhile.
Becca - liz-I just started today so I'm not sure I'll be much help
sue - what do you need liz?
kristi - Has anyone assessed ss/art? I have been videotaping lessons. However, for the majority of the time, my kids are sharing. I have been giving each a chance to share. It is more sharing than actual discussion. Are they wanting more discussion?
Donna - Liz, what help? we all probably have the same questions
ginger - becca, you would be surprised how helpful you can be just by talking about what you know about teaching
lori/fl - brave? no, just upset with myself...I had so many personal distractions last year that I didn't pay attention to what I was doing.....
Becca - I have been collecting sample since August and narrowed it down to my two in Oct so i have quite a bit of info collected on my two
sue - kristi= are they bouncing ideas off of each other or is it one at a time answers?
Monika - do the assessors take much account into very different teaching styles, philosophies & school philosophies?
ginger - kristi, i believe the best idea is to have the kids kind of in charge, and it be a discussion, but mine was pretty much teacher led and taking turns and i did ok on that one
lori/fl - i wan't planning on redoing literacy....thought that one was strong.....so i've got to start collecting more samples...am thinking of which students to focus on
Chris - becca what kind of samples
Donna - I am having trouble deciding which part of the lessons to video-In SS the art or discussion
ginger - becca, keep saving from at least two more in case someone moves
sue - becca- do more than 2-- what if someone moves. It happened to me 3 times last yr!!!
Becca - one of my lit kids is not bilingual but his parents are. Many of his oral language patterns are jumbled. I have work with the speech/language testing to do specific analysis and goal planning.
sue - donna- the video has to show all 3 at the same time
liz - Under the section #3 it does ask for chosen learning objectives and strategies. I'm wondering how may for each child and I suppose there should be at least one goal for each area??R, /W, Speaking and List???
ginger - donna, can you run lots of tapes and then pick the one you like best? I had about 5 hours and picked the 15 minutes i thought were best
lori/fl - since december is such a hectic month, i'm using it for planning and expect to get started in earnest come january
Becca - I'm pretty lucky at this point my two are very stable. I am preparign to write so my collection process will be over in two weeks
sue - becca- be sure to state how you collaborate with parents and other staff
kristi - Sue-During one of the lessons, we made a class quilt. Each child decorated a square for the quilt and told what they were thankful for. This was part of our thanksgiving unit. Do I need to get more discussion going instead of letting each child have a turn to share?
Donna - If there is discusion/sharing of ideas and materials during the video, will that cover all my bases?
Bonita - Lori, there is NO reason to be upset with yourself. This is a learning process! Keep your chin high. You can do this! Having to redo entries is NOT a bad thing. It might feel that way, but you are going to learn so much. I am EXCITED about this opportunity to grow in my understanding. It's alot more work, but so much more satisfying than sitting through rediculous professional development workshops that have little to do with early childhood. Hang in there! It will be worth it all!
ginger - liz, i definitely agree that there should be at least one for each of the 4 parts of literacy. How many in all i'm not sure as that was my weakest
Becca - I have a lot of two way parent collaboration, my low kid has LOTS of staff collaboration but is not as strong in the staff collaboration.
lori/fl - my kinders don't discuss much, at least on topic....i usually have to lead the discussions to keep them focused
sue - kristi- I think so unless the community shows bright and clear in the discussion
liz - thanks ginger
Monika - what types of logs should I start getting in the habit of using?
ginger - kristi, look at what your goals were. Do you show evidence of understanding the goals in the video?
ginger - monik, every time you connect with anyone regarding a kid, keep a log of it
Becca - Liz-would the scoring guid offer guidlines for how many objectives?
sue - liz- haven't seen the new directions. we had to analyze samples and prove that we knew how to help the students based on strenths and weaknesses
Becca - don't have my copy yet. My boyfriend will print it on Monday
lori/fl - thanks, Bonita, i'm over it, and i'm getting my ducks in a row now....my principal wants to talk with me on monday...think its about NB since we haven't had a chat in a while
liz - I will check
ginger - it can be a phone conversation from or to you, a note, a conference with another staff memeber, etx
Donna - Monika, start your communication log-it is easy to start. you can get a copy from the website
sue - brb
Monika - really? I have a verrry supportive group of parents, a volunteer everyday & I see half of them each day. Should it be for specific communication?
Monika - donna - the nbpts site?
ginger - yes, write a tiny memo of what it was about
liz - appropriate goals and objectives, no .I knew that would be the answersnumber
ginger - you will use SOME of that log as documentation
Monika - when i include the log, is it just an excerpt or the entire year?
Chris - Monika, try to show different types of communication too...e-mail, phone, face to face, notes, etc.
Becca - Monika there is a volunteer sign in on the ...
sue - monika- com log is to show the type, variety and duration of communication with parents
liz - what assessments are you using becca?
ginger - it's an excerpt, perhaps showing the variety of communication
Becca - files. Soryy
Donna - My understanding is the log is for things like-Behavior, social needs. For example, talking to a guidance counselar or doctor about a trpoubled child. I read somewhere to include positive conference as well
Terri - regarding ss, kinders and discussion.....mine do not discuss well either. I was hoping to show them sharing art work. They are working on listening attentively. I thought I would have them share compliments, but that is not discussion.
liz - I read somewhere, between 5-10??
Bonita - I don't know how familiar your principal is with NB, but there are some brochures on the NBPTS website you can download and print. They are written specifically for adminstrators and school board members. They are informative.
Monika - I have printed out some of my parent's emails. I am just worried that I haven't documented up to this point? Is that unusual?
kristi - Next week, we will be finishing our thanksgiving unit by discussing each of our traditions. We will discuss how we all celebrated the holiday and then split into groups to make a class book. Would this be more on track than the quilt? Can you show part discussion, part working on the book? Thanks!
Becca - I used a SEPERATE volunteer log to show student impact of volunteers
ginger - yes, donna, and include things like conversations you have with counselors or other staff members
ginger - no problem, monika, you won't include the whole year anyway
Bonita - Welcome, Kimberly!
sue - kristi- mine showed whole group discussion and then cooperative groups
ginger - no, kristi, keep it whole group for the tape
Donna - how detailed and long should the log be? Seems like it could go on forever?
Kimberly - I am actually Kim ,my computer messed up.
liz - Is there a site that lists good assessments to use for Lit???
lori/fl - I'm sure she is supportive....we had 3 others certify this year.....almost 10% of the ec-gens in our county are at our school
ginger - hi, kim!
Bonita - Oh well, Welcome back then! lol
ginger - try looking for the richard gentry spelling test
Chris - That is what I did also sue...how well did you score if you don't mind me asking. I scored pretty low and am wondering if that was why.
Monika - where would I find the logs on the nbpts site?
lori/fl - I would like to hear her tell me that they won't be putting any new students in my room until after april!
sue - liz- a wonderful site- go to ERIC clearinghouse on reading, english and comminciation and click on assessments
Kimberly - Any suggestions on how to successfully do the literacy section with another class
kristi - ginger-would it be good to have the discussion with the whole group and then make the class book using shared writing with the whole group? Thanks for your input sue and ginger.
ginger - and the monster developmental spelling test by Gentry and Gillet
sue - lori- we have the most in our district at our school!
Donna - The standards section on site, scrool thru to fine communication log. I can't be exeact-I did it a couple of months ago
ginger - sue, thanks for the info on the ERIC....I will go there later today!
sue - ginger- I discovered the ERIC site while writing the Early Reading FIrst Grant. It has more information than you could ever imagine. check it out
lori/fl - once i certify, we will be at 10%--that's the highest in the county, too.....not too bad for a Title 1 school
Monika - ginger - I also teach at an Open & Performing Arts school which makes things a bit different
sue - monika- if you check the files, Sallie did one in word for our use
liz - I teach grade 3 and wonder if there are specific assessments for this level
ginger - kristi, i think it would be fine to break into small groups as long as you do the meeting and discussion as a whole and you only break into groups at the end
Bonita - Did any of you NBCs find the Social Studies Standards helpful? I am wondering if I should obtain a copy of them.
Monika - thanks
lori/fl - unfortunately i haven't heard that anyone is going for it this year...I guess that means that I can keep the vieo camera on long term loan
Kimberly - What did anyone use to help study for the assessment?
sue - for literacy-- the questions asked by you about the students development need to be answered by your assessments and supported with strategies.
liz - there are so many ???s I'm not sure which to use??
sue - chris- I scored well on all my portfolios
ginger - kim, I read as much as i could about that grade level, but i like the idea that someone had to actually meet with someone from that grade level and pick their brain
ginger - hi, holley!
Kimberly - Sue, are you a banker?
Donna - for literacy, how did you assess oral language?
ginger - liz,. i don't know what you mean
Kimberly - Ginger, what do you mean meet with someone from that grade level?
sue - liz- think of assessment as finding pieces to the puzzle. I know you have to do grade level and district tests. Use those as starting points
ginger - donna, show and tell, oral retelling of a story
sue - kim- no I'm NBCT
liz - How many assessments do you think I should use..??
Becca - Donna-after using anacdotal records to access I met with my speech language teacher and she guided me toward specific tests that allowed me to know my students more
ginger - kim, like they let you know that science will be on 3rd grade or something. Meet with someone who teaches 3rd grade science
Donna - Ginger, do I have to document? Include a transcript?
sue - donna- story retellings, instructional conversations, anecdotal notes
ginger - liz, how many are practical? Maybe 3?
Bonita - Sue, what resources did you use to help with your Social Studies entry? Did you read through the Social Studies Standards?
Becca - well the anecodotal records didn't assess but you know what I mean
Kimberly - Sue,can you tell me what is a reasonable amount of points to expect tocome up? I am now in a very supportive school and will receive a whole lot more guidance than i did this time last year.
Monika - ginger - am I required to use the volunteer communication log given or can it be modified?
Kimberly - How did you know what grades went with the different areas?
liz - I read somewhere between 5-10, the more the better....it was on one of these old files
sue - bonita- ss was easier for me. I had already written a school wide unit based on state and national standards. Start with your state standards and plug in your national standards
ginger - no, that would take too much space. You can say something like, "The.........assessment showed that...........is weak in..........as she scored at a...........level
Kimberly - Monike, i madeup my own forms and actually passed that section
ginger - monika, you can make it any way you want
liz - oh thanks for the input
sue - kim- it was posted in the AC booklet. You have to play with the numbers Kim. REmember portfolios are weighted at 16%
ginger - kim, the NBPTS site should have the info
Terri - Terri
liz - I bought the book, Word Matters and there is a pretty good section on assessment
Bonita - Sue or anyone else, do you know the website where I can obtain info about getting the National Social Studies Standards?
Becky - Hi, room
sue - liz- what grade level?
Terri - oops, hit the wrong key!
ginger - liz, that was my lowest entry so i am learning, too
Bonita - Hi Becky! Welcome!
sue - bonita- check the files for portfolio help 99-00.
Bonita - Becky, are you a newbie, banker, or NBC?
lori/fl - Kim, sounds like you are looking to make up a lot of points, too!
Monika - does anyone else have to use Literacy First reading program at their school?
Kimberly - Unfortunately yes...
liz - Actually the book is geared more to K,1,2..........I teach 3 but my 2 students are low...$35.00
Becky - I'm a new NBCT. Just got my scores.
sue - ginger and liz, do yo usually do portfolio assessment on your kids?
ginger - something i do remember as important in assessment in literacy. include some formal and informal ones
Bonita - Congrats!
Kimberly - Lori- what are you redoing?
lori/fl - e;ll do it...think of how many points you made this last time....
liz - yes, i do
Bonita - I'm a 1st time banker.
ginger - congratulaions, Becky!!!
Monika - believe me...I have enough of that...not by MY choice...
lori/fl - Kim, liteacy, ss, science, AC literacy, AC social studies
ginger - sue, if you mean do i save a variety of work, yes
Donna - The Literacy Map by Richard Gentry has a lot of literacy asessments-word recog.,sight word reading etc,
sue - ginger- mine was a mix of both-- anecdotals, rubrics, portfolio, draw a man
Kimberly - Wow, are you redoing all thisyear?
sue - congrats Becky!
ginger - sue what grade do you teach?
sue - I used Marie Clay's checklist,too
Becky - I had a nice website that helped me with the Social Studies. I'll check to see if I can find it.
lori/fl - Kim, yeah, I'm a glutton for punishment![]()
Bonita - Those of you who are redoing more than two parts of the portfolio...are you paying for the retakes out of your own pocket or is your school district picking up the bill? Just curious. I am the first one in my district to go through this process so I am paving the way for future candidates and I would like to know to what extent other school districts support their NB candidates.
Zora - Hi everyone. . Anyone here EAYA Art
Monika - if you change grade levels (we loop), how does that change things if you become a banker?
sue - I'm Pre-K. But, I will be the new Resource Teacher for the parishes Pre-K Program starting next week
ginger - hi, zora, most of us here are ECGEN, but welcome
Kimberly - I am having to pay for it all by myself, thus the dilemma on whether to redo 2 or 3 entries to get the score up
Zora - I am doing more than 2 and I am geting reimbursed for 1 but possibly more in Louisiana
ginger - bonita, we are trying to get some funds from our state (NY)
lori/fl - Florida has a lottery for retakes....think they will only pay for two, but i'm putting all five of min in the pot....have nothing to lose.
Bonita - Becky, I would really appreciate any help you can offer on the Social Studies entry. I you find the website, please email it to me at bbond_1966_2000@yahoo.com. Thanks!
ginger - LNChloe, welcome
lori/fl - FL will not pay anything for the 3rd year
LNChloe - Hi Monika I changed job positions.
marci - hi all, happy holidays
ginger - hi, marci!
Kimberly - I changed grades too, Monika and will have to borrow a class
LNChloe - Monika what grade level are you at now
kristi - Becky, I would like that website, too. Please post it on the ring or e-mail me as well. Kristi@arbuckleonline.com thanks!
sue - ginger- does your state have a literacy profile that is required for each child?
LNChloe - Hi Ginger...
Zora - Will we have this discussion every Saturday
Terri - Becky, me too. please post it to the ring. Thanks.
Monika - LN - while working on it? I'm at K now, then ffirst next year
marci - are we discussing anything in particular?
ginger - no yet...we started to have one, then switched because NY state was redoing it's standards
Holley - Hi, I am a EA/YA Art. I am trying to use a Differentiation unit on Entry 3 –Learning to Study, Interpret, and Evaluate Art. In it I am working on adding Power Writing as an assignment. My question to you all is this – Are these teaching strategies familiar to you all or are these just a local/state buzzword strategies? If you all don’t use them am I working to hard on something that is not valued in the NB process and I should concentrate on other avenues? ( PS. I have never been in a chat room! =}
Monika - kim - borrow a class??
LNChloe - I believe I will be redoing assessment exercises only
ginger - yes, zora usually from 4- 5 or 5:30
liz - sue, does yourss?
Kimberly - I taught 1st grade while completing this last year and got a new job this year in 4th.
LNChloe - I was in 1st but am now a bilingual diagnostician
Bonita - Hi Marci! Happy holidays to you, too. I don't think we are discussing anything in particular. We are just shooting off questions fast and furiously. lol
ginger - holy cow, holley and zora can get together!!
sue - holley- sorry I am an EC GEN who works with 4 yr olds. I have no clue
Monika - ohh...but I will only go up 1, hope it won't be difficult
LNChloe - I guess you are in the same boat huh kimberly
Zora - LA doesn't use that language, Holley
sue - liz- yes-- it starts in PK and goes to 3rd. has lots of good information
LNChloe - Monika shouldn't be for you since EC-Gen covers 3-8 yr. olds
ginger - kim, you know you have to have 50% of your class be 8 or less to do ECGEN?
Kimberly - Yeah and I am concerned about the quality of work I can dowith another teacher's class
marci - I've only been here once and it was hard to keep up!
sue - hooley- go to wizzelwolf.com she has links to all certificate sites and info
LNChloe - I feel the same way Kimberly
Kimberly - Yes, that is why I have to borrow a class
ginger - holley, sorry, i don't know what that is
Monika - that's what i am thinking,,,heck, I haven't even started
ginger - oh you poor thing, kim
sue - liz- brb I'll see if I can find a link
Bonita - Marci, I understand. Just hang in there. It gets easier.
marci - do we need to get releases from the parents who write letters?
liz - cool
LNChloe - Yeah but she could borrow a class to complet her EC_Gen certificate
Kimberly - LN - what are you redoing?
ginger - we'll just have to help you even more!!
ginger - we'll just have to help you even more!!
Monika - marci...? hey!
Kimberly - Yes!!!
marci - I know I can keep their last names on the letters but should they sign a release?
LNChloe - Assessment Science and SS and maybe pe and health to make sure
LNChloe - I was short by 11 pts. for passing
ginger - i'm sorry to have to leave but i have a project that is calling me. See you all on the ring, and thanks for your positive input!
Kimberly - Sounds like you did pretty well.Good for you!
Bonita - Marci, I just sent releases home with EACH of my students, that way I was covered.
LNChloe - Kimberly, what are you redoing
Kimberly - See you Ginger
marci - Ginger, good to see you here, don't ever leave us!!!!!
Donna - how can you study for the ac?
Monika - bye ginger, thanks for the support!
lori/fl - bye ginger
Bonita - Bye, bye, Ginger! Thanks for your support. See you on the ring.
Kimberly - 11 points, that sounds definitely within reason...
LNChloe - read alot....
liz - by ginger...your input is always appreciated!!
marci - I sent the student releases and got them all signed but wondered if I should get all my verification people to fill out waivers too
Donna - any suggestions on what to read LN?
lori/fl - 11 points...sounds like a walk in the park to me!
Becca - I have to run too Trying to do two things at once is not going well. Good luck everyone! Stay healthy. calm and look to the future!
LNChloe - I can list what I read on the website but I have to look it all up
Kimberly - I have to redothe science video.I am not sure what else since the literacy section would involve borrowing a class but gives me more room for points. Or I can redo some test sections but have to do better...
LNChloe - I'm in Michigan right now visiting but live in Illinois
liz - by Becca thanks for conversingwithme!!
sue - liz- will post it when I find it. computer is not cooperating
Donna - I would appreciate that LI read alot of prof books, but mostly limited to literacy
Bonita - Bye, Becca! Have a great week.
marci - lori, where in Florida are you?
lori/fl - Kim, borrow the class for two weeks! The weight is much better than for an AC
LNChloe - Donna, if you want I read a pretty good book on children's play again the title escapes me but e-mail me off the ring LNChloe@aol.com
Monika - anyone know about how to sucessfully download? Trying to get the standards...
liz - thanks sue...you have beren very helpful....by everyone!!
lori/fl - Marci, Bradenton
sue - bye liz
Becky - I'm back. I found the website I used. Rose Marlow in SC has a site with links to all the standards. home.nc.rr.com/jrmarlow
Holley - Zora - Are you going to the chat room at 9 east? I think I will come back then. I am going to get my questions together.
Monika - thanks becky!
marci - I'm from Jupiter area and am a newbie who is slooooowly going through the journey
LNChloe - I now Kimberly I am in the same boat with you on the literacy entry
Kimberly - Do tyou think I can successfully borrow for the literacy section?
Donna - Thanks LN=i will email you for the info
Bonita - Thanks, Becky!
Becca - PATHWAYS TO PLAY
sue - borrowing a class can work. Our HOSTS ( mentor program) teacher certified with a borrowed class
lori/fl - Pathways to Play was one book that was suggested
Terri - Thanks Becky
LNChloe - I thought I had done so well on that one too...guess that shows us how well we all know about the process.
LNChloe - Pathways to Play that was one of them
marci - is the book for the assessment center?
kristi - Thanks Becky!
sue - yardsticks is another good book to use for the AC
LNChloe - Yes for the ac
Becca - Pathways to Play-Hedemann was very helpful for the AC. Mostly the first part
LNChloe - surprisingly did well on both my science and SS videos and I thougth my science video wasn't that good
Donna - Has anyone found Building a Primary Classroom helpful?
lori/fl - I told my hubby that if anything happens to me he should donate all these books to the school and they could name a resource room for me
LNChloe - read that book too but I didn't get as much as info as pathways...
Bonita - Yes, Donna. It is loaded with great information.
Becky - It is odd how they score the entries. The one I thought was the best was my lowest score. The one I thought was the worst was the highest. It's all about how you write it up.
marci - what about Doing what scientists do? I bought it and haven't read it yet
sue - donna- that one and constructing curriculum
Bonita - Lori, I KNOW what you mean. I told my family the same thing. lol
LNChloe - you are definitely right Becky...
Kimberly - That is so true, Becky
lori/fl - Each entry was scored by two assessors this year, I wonder if they are going to keep i that way thiscomingyear or go to just one assessor.....
LNChloe - Had that book too but didn't seem to help me much...I think with Science you really have to know about the Big Idea and be able to apply it to anything
Becky - A useful book for Community Building component is The Responsive Classroom by Ruth Charney.
Bonita - Sue, who is/are the author/s of Constructing Curriculum?
Monika - could you post the site agin please...for the standards??
sue - marci- it's good but scinece for all americans really cleared up big ideas for me
Donna - I know my family thought they were readu for me to start this-until I did. Now they want to know when I will get off the computer or get my nose out of a book!
marci - who is it by?
marci - hi Patrice
sue - bonita- I'm horrible with author's names! check amazon
LNChloe - Hi Patrice...listen all see you on the website gotta go visit some friends...thanks for everyones help
Zora - Tell us about the Responsive Classrooom, Becky
Patrice in KY - Hi Marci...just scooting in for a bit
Becky - The Big Idea is the hardest part of the Science entry.
sue - I'm in te process of moving from my classrom to central office and have everything a mess!
Patrice in KY - Hi and bye LNChloe :0
Bonita - Thanks, Sue!
Monika - becky - didyou post the website earlier?
marci - have you come down from the clouds yet Patrice? I sent my version of your letter to parents last week. Thanks again.
Bonita - Well, I need to go. Take care, all and keep in touch on the ring. Have a great week!
Patrice in KY - What has been the big discussion for today
Patrice in KY - No problem, Marci...glad I could help.
Holley - Differeniation Exemplars on www.mcps.k12.md.us/departments/eii/diffexemplaryex.html There is Anchor Activities, Exit Cards, 3 Levels of Inquiry, Tierred Lessons, etc. More information on Math and SS than on anything else. I'm going to go for now. I hope this helps someone. Good luck everyone- bye- Holley
Kimberly - How do you get in touch with someone to proofread a portfolio?
marci - I just came on a little while ago, not sure
sue - patrice- LOL! confusion
Patrice in KY - I have been so busy cooking and cleaning the last few days I haven't had time to be in the clouds....except clouds of dust. LOL
sue - kim- this ring will no longer provide a readers list
Becky - The Responsive Classroom is creating an atmosphere of respect between children and adults. I'm not explaining it very well. It includes classroom rules, morning meetings, and problem solving techniques.
Patrice in KY - Well, Sue, if the discussion is confusion then I am in the right place. LOL That is the state I live in most of the time.
marci - I kept hearing that entry 4 would be simple, but all I do is rewrite, hard to pick just the right combinations
Monika - becky - charney?
sue - patrice- still on cloud 9?
Donna - Kim, you can probably find someone on the ring-I have seen offers there
Patrice in KY - Sue, busy...busy...busy...My husband and I head to Italy in a week and I am NOT ready.
Monika - becky - did you post the home.nc.rr.com/jrmarlow site?? I think I miswrote it
Becky - home.nc.rr.com/jrmarlow
sue - morning meeting and morning message
Monika - thanks
Kimberly - Do you think getting them up to2.9 or 3 is too much to hope for??
Patrice in KY - Marci, I finally had to pull my entry 4 to a close and rewrite about a month later...seemed to clear some things up for me once I moved away from it.
marci - is that site for standards for assessment center
sue - patrice- fun or work?
Becky - Sorry, I'm having trouble keeping up. Potatoes burning on the stove. We're doing our thanksgiving turkey tonight.
lori/fl - kimberly, I'm hoping to bring mine up to 3.1 or higher
Patrice in KY - Sue, work for my husband, fun for me.I said a week...I meant to say in TWO weeks.
Kimberly - Lori- have you talked to anyone about the chances of doing this?
sue - marci- don't focus too long on #4. It's not weighted as heavy as the others
Patrice in KY - Kimberly, I didn't catch what your question was about.
sue - patrice- have fun you deserve it!
marci - I've changed the format for writing it a couple times now. Do I specifically have to say "The nature of this accomplishment" or can I say I sent out parent surveys because they foster 2way communication, etc.
Kimberly - Marci- that is so true, I did really well on section 4, which is great except it isn't worth as much.
Becky - I haven't used the website since last year. I may have written it down wrong. I'll keep checking.
sue - marci- whatever works best for you
lori/fl - Kim, I was told that somebody made up 75 points in one year....I don't have quite that many make up but i'm shotting for the starts
marci - good, thanks, I'm getting caught up in the details and sometimes forgetting the whole picture
Patrice in KY - Because is a GREAT word for entry four. If you really want to make is reader friendly you can write.. Nature: and then write what it is. When space became an issue I did a little more choppy writing than I normally like to do.
Patrice in KY - thanks, sue
Kimberly - Hi Terri!
marci - It's hard getting out of the habit of being a good writer and being a concise writer. so far they don't go hand in hand
Terri - went to check out a link. found Science for All Americans online
sue - don't forget the space savers of orphan control and find
Monika - marci - have you just started as well?
Patrice in KY - Welcome, Terri
Terri - Hi all
Zora - Terri who is EAYA ART? Hi Terri
marci - I started in October, portfolio due in March. panic mode constant
Zora - Oh sorry.. . You must be Terri in science
Monika - I hear ya Marci - haven't rec'd box, due in April
marci - okay, orphan control and find?????
Terri - Not me.........I'm EC GEC or hope to be
sue - marci- it's doable. I gave myself a March 15th date to have a few weeks to edit and it worked
Patrice in KY - You are so right, Marci. I became frustrated because I could not elaborate as much as I like to do....but TAKE the FLUFF OUT...that is critical. ; You have to make sure every word you put in there is critical.
Becky - Don't panic. Take it a little at a time. Have fun!
Zora - but Hi Terri anyway
Monika - are each of the content areas equal in weight?
Terri - Not science either. Just a wanna be who is struggling wiht big idea.
sue - while you're waiting for the box--- cook! clip coupons for the nearest pizza place, buy rheams of paper and a spare ink cartridge
marci - did you all use the boundry mics for the videotaping? I'm beginning to wonder if I should buy one
Zora - great
Patrice in KY - Monika, entries 1,2,3 are weighted heavier than 4. The assessment centers are weighted much less than the portfolios.
Monika - haha sue...and spend time with my kid because I won't once the box arrives? haha
Becky - I'm going to see if I can find that site. Hopefully, I'll be back.
marci - I think I'm going to keep my "readers" busy getting out the extra words, I'm usually a two-adjective girl
Donna - Did you get someone special to videotape?
sue - write it. highlight what's needed as evidence of the standards, description and analysis and chop the rest
Patrice in KY - sue, I went through at least five ink cartridges!!!
Monika - assessment centers? Meaning the test?
marci - yes
sue - donna- my coworker. she knows me best and was able to follow my lead with the kids when they started questioning
Patrice in KY - yes, I meant assessments at the center. Too much turkey on the brain. lol
sue - patrice- I bought a 6 pack!
Zora - set your printers on econo fast or draft to print. .. It saves you a lot of money
Patrice in KY - good tip, Zora...
Donna - I am only a newbie, but found it helpful (I think) to go thru the standards listed with each entry and tied the standards into the entry-does that make sense?
marci - I'm having trouble getting my assistant to be able to do that. But not sure who else would be available except asst principal and that seems awkward
sue - zora- wish I knew about that last year
marci - zora, never heard of that, how do you do that?
Patrice in KY - Sure does, Donna. Anytime you work with those standards will make them more internalized...that is what you want.
sue - donna-I did that.made a chart of standards, highlighted those evidenced in my lesson
Becky - Here's the site: http://home.nc.rr.com/jrmarlow/
Monika - I am having trouble d-loading the standards & don't quite understand them...so I'll wait on that
sue - marci- what about another teacher that knows you well and have a parent cover her class?
Donna - Thanks Patrice- it seemed to help me zero in on details to include in my lessons/write up
marci - Becky, what is the site for?
sue - social studies standards
Monika - I got that one becky...but for our grade level (K) do I need all standards??
Patrice in KY - Marci, just an idea...do a video tape yourself of the class doing something and show your assistant what you are really looking for. Just a little training session...then let her practice. My assistant did mine and did a spectacular job.
marci - I guess I could try that. did you all ever want to become an ostrich and bury your head in the sand with this process? Not very professional but . . .
Becky - I remember going through each entry several times. I highlighted proof of NB standards, state standards, and national standards. The thing is you have to trust that the assessors will see it because you don't have room to list the standards in your write-up.
sue - monika- yes! our grade level is where it begings PK and K,
Donna - Monika, I copied all the standards before I got the box-about 84 pages. I teach K
marci - same here Monika
Zora - Click on printers and properties and printing options then you will find it. . Some windows programs name the files in a different way but that is the skeleton . .. You need to set the econo or draft option to be a default so that you only change the settings when you are printing something that needs a lot of ink like a photograph or something like that
lori/fl - i'm losing my assistant in Jan and don't know if i'm getting another....difficult to find people with an A.A. to work as aides
Becky - The site provides links to all the national standards, Marci. I found it very useful.
Patrice in KY - Just a quick tip before you do too much taping for your entries. Make sure you read what has to be analyzed before you tape. Think backwards. You don't want to sit in front of a tv screen and wish you had done "this and that." Make notes of what would be best case scenario. You only have 15 minutes to show proof of terrific learning going on.
sue - Don't forget to address your own state standards.
marci - thanks Becky
Kimberly - Gott go,my 5 year oldwants the computer...
Monika - is there a standard for performing arts or anything close than can be incorporated ... we integrate (almost) everything through the arts
sue - patrice- have a great time!!!
Becky - Good luck all. I have to go tend the dinner.
Becky - Good luck all. I have to go tend the dinner.
Donna - Patice, I am working on a unit on Russia- my tape lesson was going to be on Faberge eggs and the kids will make one. Should my video be on discussion, the art itself or part of both?
lori/fl - bye Kimberly
sue - monika- www.wizzelwolf.com click on national arts standards
marci - doesn't each state have an arts standards. I'm sure we have one in Fl.
Patrice in KY - Thanks sue!!
lori/fl - and my dog is throwing himself at the door...gotta go feed him...bye
marci - what grade Donna?
sue - to all PK and K teachers be careful! We do so much automatically, we forget how they are intergrated and the reasons we do what we do
Donna - K- bit I have a child who was adopted from Russia
Patrice in KY - Donna, tape everything with your unit. Then script each video..then look at what the requirements call for. which will meet the standards.
sue - marci- yes and they are mostly based on the state standards.
Monika - too true sue
Patrice in KY - the more you can show...the better, Donna
marci - I think a lot of us fall into that sue. I taught K for 8 yrs. now 1st and still do that
Donna - Marci- thought we would concentrate mostly on the Art end of Russian culture
Patrice in KY - I have got to scoot..time to decorate the tree. Bye all!
sue - monika- that how an excellent teacher bombed her literacy entry. she was doing think alouds, read alouds, guided reading but never called them that
Zora - Donna what are you working on (certificate?)
Donna - Thanks Patrice!
Monika - did you all find your teaching styles or methods change greatly while going throught his process?
marci - sounds interesting, I am doing traditions from around the world based on where my students and their ancestors are from
Donna - workimg on ECGEN -tying art in with Social Studies
Monika - sue - eww....doesn't sound good for me. I do that a lot, I DO good stuff but don't know what to call it

marci - isn't everyone in the room doing ecgen?
sue - donna- think of ss as a helicopter. start with the familiar and move out
Monika - my kids are at specialls classes more than they are in MY class so scheduling is verrry difficult

Donna - Fountas and Pinnell's book on interactive writing is also great
sue - donna- what about a russian penpal, any russian immigrants in the area to share their culture?
Monika - we have a great literacy facilitator...I think I will be treating her to dinner & drinks often this year
sue - for literacy just remember your assessments need to answer your questions
Donna - Sue, I am looking- do not know if paernts can help me out- I just got this brainstorm this weekend!
marci - do you all have other teachers in your school wither doing this or certified? just curious
sue - your questions need to lead to instructional strategies and activities.
Monika - also...for Russia, write their embassy & ask for info. THey will send great posters, brochures, info, etc...and check travel agencies
sue - donna-- what grade??
marci - don't know how that extra word got in there., sorry
Monika - I have 2 colleagues at my school going through this as well

Donna - I hope to do eggs as my art-Isn't Rachenka's Eggs about Faberge eggs?
xxkristy4lifexx - hello

Donna - Russian dance- good idae- Need to research that!
Monika - and never leave out the food!
Donna - Food- my FAVORITE!

Monika - both probably!
