AdrienneHC - just seeing if anyone is here yet?
AdrienneHC - www.nbpts.org
skeeter - wondering if this is working...
skeeter - are there only two of us here?
AdrienneHC - i am back now
AdrienneHC - so far it is only the two of us what is your area
AdrienneHC - what is your certificate area?
Liz - You have a third now
AdrienneHC - great
AdrienneHC - oh I guess I am asking a stupic questions...this is the EC/Gen chat...duh
Skeeter - is this the nbpts 4 oclock chat?
Liz - Actually, I am here looking for research participants who are in the NBPTS program.
AdrienneHC - Have you guys started working on your entries?
Liz - Not a dumb question!
Skeeter - i'm a retake candidate
AdrienneHC - I am in the program I guess I am a candidate for the 2003 cycle
AdrienneHC - ok skeeter good luck...which entry are you going to retake
Skeeter - didn't quite make it the first time....retaking the literacy and science/math entries
Liz - I am conducting a research project that explores how teachers are accessing and enhancing their professional development through participation in an online environment. Specifically I am interested in teacher participation that is independent of online coursework or any other credit. This study investigates why K-12 teachers voluntarily participate in informal online learning and how it influences their professional development. The ultimate goal of this research is to help school districts develop or invest in online learning opportunities that will be successful for their teachers.
Skeeter - trying to psyche myself up to do it again
AdrienneHC - I am new to this skeeter so I don't know if I will be of any help but I will try and we can help each other
Skeeter - thanks
AdrienneHC - Don't give up
Liz - I am looking for research participants. As a fellow teacher and part-time doctoral student I know that your time is scarce. However, with only 10 minutes you can answer a web-based survey that asks questions about your experiences with online professional development. If you are a willing participant, please email me or click on the link below to go directly to the survey.http://mason.gmu.edu/~eriddle1/research/survey.html
Skeeter - haven't been to this chat before, have you?
AdrienneHC - Liz I don't know if this is online learning...basically we are here for the chat to get ideas and suggestions for our NBPTS portfolios
Skeeter - do lots of people show up?
AdrienneHC - yes I try to make it every weekend or every other and I try to come iwth a few questions. Usually Kelly is here and she is a certified teacher. I don't know if anyone else in the room is certified.
Grandma9 - Hi. I am a 2002-2003 candidate who is not feeling very successful at this time. I have some super contacts in the process and found what I haven't been doing right.
AdrienneHC - between 6-10 people usually. But with the holidays it has been kind of low.
Skeeter - you mean nbpts certified?
AdrienneHC - Hey Grandma9 don't feel bad sometimes I feel like I am out here on my own
AdrienneHC - yes Nbpts certified sorry skeeter
Skeeter - my only question right now is..... i'm looking for good helpful books to assist me with the literacy entry .... iteach kindergarten
Grandma9 - Adrienne what are you working on right now? Which entry?
AdrienneHC - Grandma9 what entries are your working on or what have you started doing
AdrienneHC - I am working on Social STudies and beginning to work on Science and Math
AdrienneHC - Skeeter for the Literacy entry I have really been using the Marie Clay reading recovery books. These books helped me decided what kind of assessments to use and why
Liz - Adrienne, I was hoping to get input from some of you because you are using these tools (live chat) a little differently than maybe some other groups.
Skeeter - ahh, thanks, adrienne
Grandma9 - I have worked on all of them but literacy. I am in a strange position because after I applied my teaching assignment changed from K to two thirds Reading Recovery and some work with first developing a word work room.
AdrienneHC - There is also an Assessment book by Carson Delosa that has great tests to use it is on the readinglady.com website under the four blocks tab
Skeeter - thanks... i was just on that site for the first time, and it does look helpful
AdrienneHC - that's fine with me liz
AdrienneHC - Grandma what kids are you using for your portfolio
Grandma9 - My math/science was all completed when I began to get hooked into this chat room and the Yahoo mailring. That was when I discovered how far off base I was in regards to inquiry science
Skeeter - well, i've got to run, i may check out this meeting room again at 9 0clock
Skeeter - good luck to you all!!!
AdrienneHC - Skeeter remember that you cannot use running records for you assessment or work samplesbut you can use anything else
Skeeter - huh?
AdrienneHC - I am just beginning the science and I was going to do the lifecylce of frogs...do you think that is a good idea?
Grandma9 - For the literacy I am using two of my Reading Recovery kids who share the same classroom. The other two entries I did with students from a classroom where I am mentoring a first year teacher.
Skeeter - no running records? you mean like anecdotals, or informal observatios, or what?
AdrienneHC - I read in the directions that running records are not accepted and work samples from students in the literacy entry
Skeeter - hmmm
AdrienneHC - no running records where the kids read the text and you make check marks as they read to see if they know the text...anecdotal recoreds and informal observations are great
Grandma9 - That is also what I read. I will use the analysis of the running records to do my write up though.
Skeeter - oh, i see
Skeeter - thanks
AdrienneHC - yes you can use the ananlysis but the scorers don't want to see running records
AdrienneHC - Grandma what do you think about my science idea
Skeeter - i haven't received my new "box" yet, but am assuming that the directions and questions will be mostly the same as last year
Grandma9 - What were you planning for an inquiry as part of the unit on frogs.
AdrienneHC - I was thinking that I would have tadpoles on each of their tables when they arrive one day and then have the come up with questions about the creature they see...is that inquiry
Skeeter - for it to be good inquiry science, i think you will have to come up with some real questions that the children have about frogs, etc
AdrienneHC - Skeeter you mean they should develop the questions right? or do you mean something else
Grandma9 - Before I started reading about inquiry I would have said yes, now I'm not sure that it is. I'll find my site for more information on this topic. I understand that it should be something that students want an answer to and they come up with some ways to find that answer
pez - banker here, missed by 23 points
Skeeter - ditto what grandma said....their own questions, and ones that they (with your help) can find answers to by experimenting
Skeeter - the science seemed pretty good to me, but there probly wasn't enough inquiry going on
pez - I'm trying to decide what to do for my science/math video
Skeeter - and as for the literacy, i ran out of time and didn't really complete it
Grandma9 - Try the site www.scienceinquiry.com. I have decided that what I did does not qualify but I don't have the time to go back and do another lesson.
AdrienneHC - Me too...I was just bouncing the idea around about frogs
Skeeter - grtandma, why don't you have time.... isn't it due april 15th?
AdrienneHC - why do you guys keep saying that you ran out of time or Grandma you said that you don't have time to do another lesson..is that because you are using someone else's students?
pez - I'm writing down the other site too. I scored a 2.0 on my entry. Everyone who read it said it was good, Duh, I guess it wasn't good enough
AdrienneHC - Pez don't be too hard on yourself
brenda - A friend of mine who didn't certify last year said she bombed the AC. said that 70% of people did not pass last year.
Skeeter - i ran out of time because it was the last entry i did, and i seriously just ran out of time....didn't start it early enough, etc...
Grandma9 - Yes, I am using someone else's classroom and the person who took over my lessons for Reading Recovery kids is going in the hospital for major surgery in Jan and won't be back until after Feb Vacation - my box is due March 15
AdrienneHC - oh ok skeeter
Becky - Pez, I'm in the same boat as you. I also scored a 2. I thought inquiry was asking questions.
AdrienneHC - Oh I haven't read the entry completely but will now I did not know it linked literature too I thought it just involved math and science
Skeeter - why aren't they all due on april 15th?
pez - Becky, my kids were great on the video. They were asking questions, they each had their own job, they were recording their data, making equations, etc. My principal did the video taping for me and he was blown away by them, I teach K and I was so proud of them
AdrienneHC - Mine is due on March 15th and it is based on when all of hte $ was paid
brenda - Are you familiar with the GEMS book, FRog Math? It uses the Frog and Toad story "Lost button "
Skeeter - adrienne, you don't have to integrate reading too, i think ruth might be messing with your mind
AdrienneHC - Pez you did not score well on that one
Skeeter - oh, dang, now i'm really confused
pez - No Adrienne, a 2.0
Becky - My kids were also awesome, butI focused on the tech part with Graph Club. U picked the wrong part of the lesson to videotape. Now I know what is meant by technology.
Becky - That was supposed to be I instead of U.
pez - I'm thinking of doing a sink or float lesson this time
AdrienneHC - I used to teach in AZ do you know where you want to be
Skeeter - guess i better get out of this chat room and get busy....thought i had a month more than apparently i do
pez - or AIMS has a Huff and Puff lesson
AdrienneHC - what do you think was wrong with the other lesson Pez
Grandma9 - Not everyone is due at the same time. Some teachers in my district are also due in April because of when they applied
Becky - My students want to know how our fiber optic tree works. I thought this could be our beingging of a unit on color and light. I teach kindergarten. Does this seem too difficult?
brenda - another person from last year missed by only one point. They only thing they could figure out was that her science was too heavy in the math.
Becky - I missed by four points. One would be more heart-breaking.
pez - Adrienne, I think someone told me that it was more of an observational lesson than inquiry. They were mixing colors to make primary and secondary colors
AdrienneHC - oh so they really need to be involved hands-on doing something not just watching...who was mixing the colors
Kelly M - Adrienne - not just hands-on ... but really inquiry. Those are two different things...although inquiry involves a lot of hands-on...
pez - They were taking turns mixing the colors. They were asking themselves what would happen if we add more of this, or less than that, etc.
AdrienneHC - doing what?
Kelly M - Adrienne - yep - it's me-
AdrienneHC - that souhds like it was good Pez I don't know I am not certified yet
Evelyn - Does anyone know how the accessors determine your score. I was told that everyone starts as a 3 and points are added or deducted. Do they have a rubric and list of standards? I am just curious what their score sheet is like.
Becky - Pez, did they make guesses before mixing?
Kelly M - Evelyn-yes, the entries start in the 3.0 family. Depending on the evidence the assessor finds, it can go up or down (or stay the same)...
AdrienneHC - Evelyn what about the scoring guide that is availalbe online or by calling NBPTS
pez - Becky, we did extimating first, then they worked to see if their predictions were on target
Kelly M - And a
Kelly M - And Adrienne is absolutely right. Check out the scoring guide available online.
Becky - That's sounds fun!
Kelly M - The phone number is 1-800-22TEACH
AdrienneHC - My main questions for the day has to do with the right up
AdrienneHC - I have been reading the standards and highlighting what is related to the social studies entry and now I want to know if I am supposed to include what is in the standards in my right up or what?
Kelly M - Adrienne - what about the write up?
Evelyn - Kelly, Where can I find the scoring guide. Do I go to candidate resources or is it part of the portfolios instructions? thanks
Evelyn - Adrienne, yes, yes ,yes... don't quote the standards, but show that you teach to the standards.
Becky - Adrienne, I did address the standards in my SS write up. I did well on that entry.
Kelly M - Adrienne - you do not need to quote the standards. If you answer the questions you will be addressing the standards. Keep them nearby and go back and check to see that you mentioned things that relate to each standard...
AdrienneHC - The scoring guide is in the downloadable files in the Candidate resource ceter
pez - I'll be back in a few. Going to check on some sites
Kelly M - A person has to have taught for at least 3 years before applying for National Board certification.
Evelyn - Kelly, do you really need to address everything within the standards. I was given a checklist that came from information within each standard. Sometimes I was able to check everything off, but on some entries it was sooo hard. Surely indeed it would be impossible. So many people I know are not making it and I am stating to second guess everything I write at this point.
AdrienneHC - where did you find this checklist it sounds interesting
Susan (NC) - Hi guys! Sorry I'm late.........
AdrienneHC - Hey Susan
Susan (NC) - Hope everyone is enjoying some rest between the holiday stuff going on!
Becky - I'm struggling with a science topic. If I am correct, my students need to direct the investigation with KWL chart, etc., and then diecide on a "guess" to investigate. Is that correct?
Kelly M - Hi Susan! Evelyn - I would make sure that you answer all of the questions first. Then take a highlighter and go back and highlight everything in one color that talks to one of the standards that needs to be addressed....then use another color and do the same for another standard listed that needs to be addressed, and so on. That way you'll find that you addressed them all.
Susan (NC) - Evelyn, I'm interested in your checklist.......did it come with the new generation NB materials? I'm doing the older version-
Susan (NC) - No, I'm from western NC-
AdrienneHC - evenly I am interested in the checklist also
Kelly M - Becky - you don't have to use a KWL chart, although that is certainly one way to begin. But you need to have the children questioning what they want to know about something. You will have to provide materials (or have them bring things from home, depending on what you're doing), and let THEM ask the questions (or at least answer them!). You can be helping them find those questions, but they need to be in the questioning mode themselves, too!
Evelyn - Kely, I have highlighted and find I am strong in some areas and weak in others. It is very helful, but I really want to know the nitty gritty. How many highlighted sentences under each standard is a good solid score? Anyone want to take on that ??????!
AdrienneHC - Kellly that is a good idea about the highlighting
Becky - Susan, I keep dreaming of science entries. My kindergartners really want to know how our fiber-optic tree works. I thought we could go with a color and light unit. Would using the fiber-optics as a technology be too high level?
Susan (NC) - We had snow on Christmas day but it is mostly gone by now-
Becky - Kelly, what do you think about the fiber-optic idea?
Kelly M - Hi bruppert! Glad to see you! Hope all is getting better every day at your house!
Evelyn - No, it didn't come from NBPTS. I think a local mentor typed it up.
AdrienneHC - That is really putting them on the spot I would say atleast 3 from each that way it would be clear, convincing and consistent
AdrienneHC - Hi Burppert
Kelly M - Becky - Try it out and see where it leads you! They'll only go as far with it as they are capable of!
bruppert - Things are moving along , thanks for asking, Kelly!!
AdrienneHC - Evelyn I would love to receive a copy...can you snail mail it or email it
Kelly M - Evelyn - I wouldn't be able to venture a guess on that one! But I think you want to have each standard well represented!
Kelly M - Evelyn - is the checklist something you could send to me that I could put in our files?
Evelyn - Well 3 should be easy. I thought it would be much higher than that. I wish I knew someone who actually knows how the scoring works.
AdrienneHC - I like the fiber optic idea that is great on the spot inquiry science
AdrienneHC - Evelyn I am not certified but do you think three is ok...I do
Becky - It's something they came up with. I know that's where I need to start. I thought about buying some half price items to take apart.
Kelly M - Hi Sarah - welcome!
Evelyn - Adrienne, it is 36 pages long!!!! Email me at Dalenvidge@aol.com and give me your address. I hopefully will have time to copy it and send it to you. I can't promise as I am totally overwhelmed right now. I have 3 children, a difficult class, etc
Sarah - Hello.. I am working on the social studies write up and am having a brain crash
Kelly M - Evelyn - what do you want to know about the scoring?
Becky - Sarah, I re-wrote for weeks. It will come!
Sarah - the questions almost seem redundant
AdrienneHC - thanks Evelyn and I totally understand the overwhelmed part
Sarah - and I am trying not to repeat
Evelyn - Kelly, I guess I am just curious about what they actually have in front of them that they tally or check off etc.
brenda - Evelyn, I have a VERY difficult class too!
AdrienneHC - I am working on SS too let's chat
bruppert - someone earlier on wrote they wanted to science inquiry on life cycle of frogs-- who was that?
Evelyn - Brenda, I love my class, but they are a challenging group for many reasons. VERy NEEEEDY!!!!
AdrienneHC - that was me
Becky - That's true. On the yahoo ring, Diana, II think), wrote yesterday to not repeat yourself. That seems hard. I guess you have to be SURE to clearly answer the questions.
Kelly M - Evelyn - I think it's a listing of all the things that are called upon to be in there.....
bruppert - I wanted to tell who ever wrote about the life cycle of frogs to do real frogs not dead ones
Susan (NC) - I am thinking about doing Magnets with a lst grade class - if everyone had their own magnet kit (ie different size magnets) do you think they can do some inquiry stuff?
Grandma9 - I am also working on SS and the videos that I did just helped me to learn how much I need to STOP talking
brenda - Is a life cycle a good thing to do the science on? I am drawing a blank on what to do for my science.
Kelly M - Susan - give them the magnets and let them decide what they want to find! Maybe talk first about what they already know....
Becky - Grandma, I learned that in my videos also!
AdrienneHC - well ifigured that after some of the other comments that were made I just haven't figured out how to make it inquiry that comes from them do you have any ideas
Kelly M - Grandma9 - LOL...I think we all learn that one!
AdrienneHC - Cycles is one of the big ideas for science isn't it?
Susan (NC) - I'm going to start this when we get back Jan. 6, we haven't had any video practice so it should be interesting!!
bruppert - Susa n I was thinking of doing magnets iwth my first graders but I don't know any more about magnets than my children do -- so I have to read up and study on that aswell
Sarah - My group has a problem asking questions. I am the only teacher who has exposed them to project based learning. Their K teacher did worksheet packets.. argh.
Evelyn - Grandma, video every lesson if you can. I wish I had now with my Social Studies Unit
Becky - Adrienne, definitely. I nned to know more about big ideas too.
Sarah - My kids have an interest in worms and ants now.. I may start this in January.
AdrienneHC - I gave my students the opportunity to play in front of the camera for about five minutes and then let them watch it as a reward and now they are fine infront of the camera,...there are always a few who need a video refresher
Grandma9 - I did video every lesson and I didn't stop and watch each one as I went along. That was ab iig mistake
Susan (NC) - bruppert, have you found any good lessons on the internet? I found a few on Teachers.net.
Evelyn - I am saving Science for last so I can work with my students on forming questions and scientific thinking. I am also waiting on the Scienceline videos from PBS which show classes involved in inquiry. I have heard it is great and is available at PBS.org
bruppert - Sarah when my kids first started learning to ask questions-- we had them notice how many times we said a question word and asked each other questions. we sort of kept score if you will and that helped teach them to inquire
Becky - I'm not sure about a big idea for the fiber-optic lesson, maybe form and function. That will come up in my next few dreams. Bruppert, that's a great idea.
bruppert - No Susan I have not started yet as I was taking a break.but I guess I should do that
Evelyn - Sarah, someon did a unit on worms from the web ring at Yahoo. Maybe you can find it in the archives.
Sarah - I am willing to try anything right now.. they are getting better than August. I was a bit concerned that this would not be a great video group.
Sarah - I will look for the worms
sue - hi yall- sorry I'm late
Susan (NC) - well, folks - keep up the good work and don't ever give up......that is my new battle cry!
Kelly M - Hi sue - welcome!
bruppert - I am a banker and last year we did a unit on ice and things that could move on ice and it was all the children's idea-- what I did wrong in my portfolio is my write up and explaining the misconceptions and all.
Kelly M - Susan - you are SO right!
Evelyn - Hi Sue .
AdrienneHC - From what I am hearing in order for me to do my unit on frogs I need to have the students develop their own itnerest in frogs and then if I put tadpoles in little fishbowls on their desks that is not inquiry because I broght the tadpoles in is that right?
sue - to everyone-- tape the ant and rubber tree plant song to your computer. It worked!
Becky - Bye all! Happy New Year!!!
sue - adrienne- what will they manipulate to answer their own questions?
bruppert - Adrienne-- if you want to do frogs you could read the Frog and Toad books-- that has always stirred my students interest big time.
Evelyn - Adrienne, their interest in frogs led you to bring in frogs and then go from there.
Kelly M - Adrienne - no, I wouldn't think that is a problem. You can present the tadpoles, and then have them figure out what they would like to learn about them...how to manipulate things about their existence, etc. (Do they like the dark, the light...or does it make a difference....anything like that that they come up with!)
AdrienneHC - well i guess they can't manipulate the tadpole can they so they have to touch it not just look at it because that is only observation
Kelly M - sue - I LOVE that song! Oops...there goes another rubber tree....
Evelyn - they could manipulate the habitat for the frogs. Do they turn into frogs faster if they are in a bowl near the window and get sunlight. Will they develop faster if they recieve more food?
sue - adrienne- I highly recommend finding some FOSS kits or AIMS kit/information
Kelly M - Adrienne - but they can test what foods they like, whether they like to stay in the group or if they wander off....things that they CAN manipulate. (within reason, of course!)....
brenda - frogs--do they all develop at the same rate?
sue - the frog idea is good but it's long term-- do you have enough time?
Grandma9 - What great ideas i wish I had been part of this before I did my math science unit
Kelly M - Adrienne - sue is right on! Aims and FOSS (and GEMS) have great guiding lessons!
AdrienneHC - how about manipulating their environment to see if it affects their development into frogs?
sue - from tadpole to frog is about 21 days
Sarah - can someone tell me the difference between the part on planning and instruction about what came before and after and the question on the videotape analysis about what came before and after
AdrienneHC - I will check those out sue
AdrienneHC - that is a long time isn't it...is it too long for this?
sue - in p and i it's referring to the entire unit, the video is just that what happened immediately before or after the lesson
Evelyn - Sarah, I have the same question?????
Sarah - There is also a book by GEMS called Froggy Math
sue - adrienne- what age? my PK kids would loose interest over the time frame
bruppert - If you start the first of Jan and work into Feb. uyou have time to video and all
AdrienneHC - first grade
Sarah - My unit is 8 weeks long.. and art etc is all through the unit. So it was before and continues
sue - sarah- but check with MB to make sure
AdrienneHC - Is it correct that none of the units can overlap in time frame
bruppert - Kelly, what grade are you doing this year?
sue - adrienne- check the directions. I think artifacts can't be from the same units of study
AdrienneHC - ok
sue - adrienne- what is your math connection?
Kelly M - Adrienne - hmm...I'd check the directions on that one. I don't think you can use part of one unit in another, but I'm not sure they say you can't have two going on at the same time.... bruppert, I'm still in first.....
AdrienneHC - haven't gotten that far yet I was thinking about measurement of the frogs jumping what do you think?
sue - adrienne- what age and grade?
AdrienneHC - or maybe graphing
AdrienneHC - 1st grade 6 year olds
bruppert - Me too, Adrienne!! wonderful age, Kelly too does this age group
AdrienneHC - I love first grade forever!!!!
bruppert - Adrienne, you have to think of technology too
sue - first graders are the oldest I've taught
Evelyn - So for the question about what came before and after the video inthe planning and instruction section, we should write about the unit as a whole????? Then in the analysis of the video they ask the same question, but want to know what happened immediately before the video , but is not featured on the actual 15 minutes of film??????
sue - bruppert- there's a live frogcam site I;ve used that's great!
Evelyn - First Grade LOoping teacher here, too!
Kelly M - Adrienne - LOL...I don't know about forever!...but this is the 17th year in a row for me! Before that I taught Pre-K - 7th...every one of them! First graders wear me out... I don't know how many more years I'll stay in first!
brenda - Adrienne, could you graph the frog's development?
sue - evelyn- that's what I think but as with everything, check with NB. They're great about emailing
AdrienneHC - I am going to try to fit it all in....I am jsut beginnig this entry so I am really at the rough draft stage. I hope to have SS/ARTs finished in mid january and then put full focus on science. The literacy unit is ongoing
Kelly M - Hi Linda, wlecome!
bruppert - sue you are so resourceful
Linda - What do you all think of this. I did a math/science unit and then really learned about inquiry science after and realized I hadn't done inquiry that is written up all through my reflection
sue - bruppert- LOL! I just took the job as Pre-K resource teacher for the district!
AdrienneHC - Brenda would that be how they change each day or what?
AdrienneHC - If it was me Linda I would have to do it again but I am so anal that I can't stop squeezing
bruppert - sue, you were so helpful to me with children's play last spring
sue - adrienne- I;m still a little concerned over the time frame for the kids. It seems a lot " wait" for the kids
Evelyn - Sue, do you know the email address by heart? If so could you type it fo rme?
sue - bruppert- glad to know that!
AdrienneHC - Sue was it hard to leave the classroom
sue - evelyn- it's on my other computer that's boxed up becuase son is using the internet access for his
sue - I won't have it up and running again until end of Jan. do a google search
AdrienneHC - I think so too I just know I have to teach frogs and I thought it would be fun. i can do something else I just like frogs but I am not married to the idea yet
brenda - Could you graph how many developed hind legs, then front legs--which will they develop first? When does the tail drop off? Do some do it earlier than others?
Kelly M - Linda - The assessors have said that you can score on the science entry without inquiry....but you probably wouldn't have a strong one at all. I'd probably want to redo it if there were time enough....
sue - adrienne- yes but I will be in classes on a weekly basis
bruppert - sue I have done the tadpole thing in the spring and my first graders loved that as well as watching our butterflies develop
sue - bruppert- I've done it,too. but, I really think it lends itself more to observation and process skills rather than true inquiry
Evelyn - Painted lady butterflies lifecyle is very short. I think they turn from caterpillar ot butterfly in three weeks.
AdrienneHC - Bruppert did it take the 21 days that sue mentioned
bruppert - sue, me too
AdrienneHC - well I want true inquiry ....any ideas...I can do magnets
bruppert - oh yes, for sure!!
Kelly M - Hi aggieb - how are you today?
sue - kelly- do you remember a post called the 5 E's of Inquiry. I don't know how to find it in the files.
brenda - Adrienne, you could also do a daily log too--either you write if the students are too young or let them have turns playing "scientist" and writing their observations
Evelyn - Adrienne, I am doing force and motion.
sue - ((((( aggie B)))))
AdrienneHC - i have it but it was given to me at a workshop for NB
Kelly M - sue - yes...that sounds familiar. Hold on...I'll see if I can find it!
AdrienneHC - Evelyn is that with magnets
bruppert - AGGIE-- so glad to see your name!!
aggieb(NC) - Hi to everyone
sue - I think it would help to read the post. That would answer if you are doing inquiry or obsevation with your lesson
Evelyn - I am not happy with my Social Studies video, or at least my part. The class was fabulous. Great interaction and display of social skills. Should I just rip my self and the mistakes I made up and then focus on the great job thekids did?
sue - LOL! ask aggie how long inquiry took to click in with us last year
Evelyn - No, we will be doing toy cars down ramps etc
bruppert - Evelyn ask Aggie how she started all over 2 weeks before the box was due with SS.
pez - Back
aggieb(NC) - It took a lot of reading and rethinking but when you get it you get it!!
AdrienneHC - I think the focus will be on the children
aggieb(NC) - oh yes!! guys it takes a lot of reflections to do well
Evelyn - Aggie, did you really ditch everything and start over with a whole new unit or just redo the video? If I am not being too nosey!
pez - I was just at a site that had a really interesting lesson about change
bruppert - you are too cute Aggie!!
aggieb(NC) - I redid the written commentary..
AdrienneHC - I read the inquiry article at the ec/gen files but is there something else that I should read that will make me go aha!!
sue - hey pez!
susan - I'm thinking of animals in winter for entry 3. I'm hoping children will ask how they survive
pez - It centered around an erupting volocano. Do you think that would work for an inquiry lesson?
pez - Hi sue
Kelly M - sue - I found them! They are Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Extension, and Evaluation. I'll post to the ring the details about each....
aggieb(NC) - My first video of ss and science were excellent. I used them both but video more for my sanity
bruppert - what did your kids do Aggie fro science/math?
Kelly M - pez- the problem with something like that is that it is very hard to have something set up that the kids can actually investigate....
sue - thanks kelly. I wanted to use it with someone I am helping tomorrow
AdrienneHC - I know about the five e's but does anyone know how to break down inquiry into a quick example so I can see what I am not getting
aggieb(NC) - Pez, if you could let the volcanoes erupt with different variable or amounts of substances
susan - I'm not sure what math other than graphing we can do,
pez - gotcha
aggieb(NC) - Bruppert, I enjoyed slimy earthworms.. for 8 whole weeks
AdrienneHC - aggie how did you get them to want to know about earthworms
sue - adrienne- in inquiry the kids are asking and answering their own questions as they are actively engaged in an experience. they use the process skills as they investigate. Am I on track aggie and kelly?
bruppert - Aggie, I don't think I could do that!!
Evelyn - Hey someone was just talking about a worm unit. Are you stil there????
aggieb(NC) - I have plants on all my tables and they kids overwatered them and wanted to know what they were and where they came from
Sarah - yes.. it is me. I am working on the worm unit for Jan
sue - worms are fun!
Kelly M - Adrienne - this site was posted the other day....it looks pretty good. I haven't read it all, but what I did see I liked! www.enc.org/topics/inquiry/
AdrienneHC - do you have table captains that are responsible for watering the plants
Sarah - my kids think so.. I am less excited about the feel
Kelly M - sue - sounds like a great explanation to me!
AdrienneHC - thanks kelly I will look it up
aggieb(NC) - sue, yes and finding their own answers through the inquiry process
Evelyn - I would love to do a worm unit next year during October. Creepy Crawly Theme.
Kelly M - I really need to get going! I'll see you all on the ring....Happy New Year!
pez - looks like a good site
AdrienneHC - thanks kelly see you later
pez - need to go, bye
sue - pez- are you redoing science?
aggieb(NC) - Each group decided who would take care of them.. that is part of my class community.. they are the decision makers
bruppert - see you later kelly thanks I will be emailing you soon
Sarah - time for me to go.. see y'all
Evelyn - Gotta go too. Thanks Ladies.
AdrienneHC - that is good Aggie
sue - aggie- do you have pictures of your class posted on tnet?
AdrienneHC - so one day the worms just were on their tables when they came to school
bruppert - so aggie were there worm in your soil on purpose?
aggieb(NC) - My website is not current and I do not have any pictures of my kids at all. I live in rural town and parents would not have it!!
sue - adrienne- in my case the worms were used becuase my " wild one" dug them up with a spoon during outdoor time
AdrienneHC - what is your website
aggieb(NC) - Bruppert, nope,, i am from the country and I dug my dirt from a compose pile,,
bruppert - sounds like my community aggieb!! very rural and not hep on the internet idea at all
AdrienneHC - sue that is too funny
sue - aggie- didn't realize you were a true country girl
AdrienneHC - so how did the worms get there are there worms in a compost pile...I am a city girl forgive me
aggieb(NC) - I had each child draw his/her face and I put their first names with the pictures
aggieb(NC) - I compose my old grass, leaves , etc and make rich soil for my plants to grow and thrive.
sue - aggie- I gave up my webpage.my replacement doesn't want to be bothered with it!
bruppert - There is aplace where you can order meal worms I heard one time, but I don't know the place.
AdrienneHC - Your replacement
AdrienneHC - Oh, I amstill waiting to hear where the worms came from?
aggieb(NC) - Bruppert, I started out with inquiry on meal worms also.. it was fun.. my kids had a lot of experiences with meal worms
sue - adrienne- yes- I took a new job effective 12/20- resource teacher
brenda - You can get worms from a bait shop.
AdrienneHC - Congratulations?
aggieb(NC) - I meant a lot of experience with inquiry
AdrienneHC - I meant Congratulations!
bruppert - did you order the meal worms?
sue - walmart has earthworms
aggieb(NC) - Oh, the ones I used in my lessons were definitely from the bait shop The cost me 2 bucks for 12 worms
bruppert - sue, for real. Walmart!!
sue - you can do a google search for just about anything and find a source
brenda - Maybe you could involve your parents and ask them to dig up some worms.
Susan /Ohio - Hi everyone. I have a quick question
bruppert - Adrienne, what does the HC stand for?
AdrienneHC - ok
AdrienneHC - my last name
brenda - A google search for worms--that is too funny!
bruppert - aggie is NC for NOrth CArolina that is why I asked. thanks
AdrienneHC - hello Susan
sue - brenda- don't laugh, that's where I found a great site for the kids
bruppert - so am I correct in; understanding you, aggie, you did the mealworms to start the inquiry and then went into worms in the soil?
sue - aggie-still as busy as ever?
aggieb(NC) - They are easy to find on rainy days,, that was part of my lessons, rainy day verses, hot sunny days!!
Susan /Ohio - I am a board certified teacher. However, my school board is making a recommendation that all board certified teachers be transferred to low performing schools.
brenda - What site did you find? What was there?
sue - bruppert- I did it the opposite way... my kids thought the only kind of worms were earthworm
AdrienneHC - I don't agree with that Susan
sue - susan- I can see their point to a certain degree.
Susan /Ohio - Right now, I teach in a great HS in Cincy. I teach English. They want to transfer me to a school with a lot of crime and low test scores.
aggieb(NC) - I did living and nonliving, yes a quick lesson, two or three days on meal worms not a big unit like the earthworms.. just to see their habitants..
AdrienneHC - My district told all the retire/rehires that they had to do that too. I don't agree with it at all
sue - of the 8 who certified in our area- 5 of us are at schools who are academically below average
Susan /Ohio - I want to just give back my bonus $2300) from this year to stay where I am
AdrienneHC - I see their point but why don't they want good teachers everyhwere?
Susan /Ohio - Well Sue, were't you already in those crummy schools? I'm not
AdrienneHC - so you used the mealworms to help the children explore the definition of living/non linvibg because the mealworms don't appear to be alive at first right?
Susan /Ohio - I am so sick about this, I am on Tagamet for ulcers
sue - susan-- first of all my school is not crummy. we're a low income school with the problems associated with poverty.
AdrienneHC - Susan I am sure you don't mean minority by crummy do you?
aggieb(NC) - I am trying to volunteer to move to one and they think i am crazy .. I would love to go into one of those areas.. sorry!!
sue - I've had opportunities to go to the " good schools" and turned them down
Susan /Ohio - I do not want to teach in a school like that
brenda - Susan, that's like being punished for accomplishment. Why don't they just get a dynamic principal with a vision and ask for volunteers? It's not fair to be transferred for that reason alone--unless they want to pay you more!
aggieb(NC) - You have to want to be there!! and I want to be there!!
Susan /Ohio - Brenda, exactly
AdrienneHC - Aggie - so you used the mealworms to help the children explore the definition of living/non linvibg because the mealworms don't appear to be alive at first right?
AdrienneHC - I want to be there too!!!
sue - susan- then don't. they shouldn't force you but I can understand why they would want more " accomplished" teachers to handle problem areas
Susan /Ohio - I love my current school. It's close to home
Susan /Ohio - Sorry Sue, I don't want a bunch of problem kids
aggieb(NC) - Adrienne, email me offline and I can share with you.. Nope,, I started with simple things in their environment with living and nonliving.. you MUST start with what the childern know
sue - aggie- come to the burbs of new orleans. we need you in title I schools
AdrienneHC - what's your email
Susan /Ohio - I am going to go to the school board and protest
aggieb(NC) - aggieb@hotmail.com so everybody email me , ok
bruppert - AGGie please share with me too!!
sue - aggie- you're now the other official " bug lady"
AdrienneHC - Alright thanks Aggie i have to go now but it was nice chatting with teachers who want to be their for all kids
sue - so is everyone comfortable with their social studies entry
bruppert - no she will be the "Wormy Girl"
sue - bruppert- the joke is I was the " bug lady" at my school. I did worms, too.
brenda - Teachers should have a say in where they teach so they will do their BEST work. I teach in one of "those" schools. I love the kids and enjoy working with them--it's the 'nobody cares' administration that gets me down. Oh, they care deeply for test scores.
sue - herre's a bit of advice. If you are using a terrarium, make sure the lid is tight.
bruppert - sorry didn't know, but I thought you were the resident early childhood specialist
sue - I walked into worms squirming everywhere after lunch LOL!
sue - bruppert- about what?
sue - my EC room was a menagerie
aggieb(NC) - Sue is the officical " play " specialist!!
bruppert - one year I had the apple the kids eat just totally go bad on purpose so we could fruit flies and my teacher friends called me the bug lady for sure. we used the apples to make faces and dress them up for our history unitl
sue - aggie-- thank you! You know my principal says all we do is play in Pre-k LOL!
aggieb(NC) - Isn't it amazing how we all come together as one!
sue - great minds work alike
sue - aggie- how are you mentees doing?
aggieb(NC) - She has a lot to learn about play!
bruppert - do you remember aggie and sue we got on a chat and discussed play for some time last spring.?
sue - they have been showing the play scenarios on our local PBS station-- from the Annenberg Fdn
sue - bruppert- sure do
aggieb(NC) - My NC mentees are getting it!! a bit tired of me but hopefully they will pass.. one bought me the most beautiful teapot for Christmas,, and I told here she might be taking it back
bruppert - are they of your students?
aggieb(NC) - yeah , we made our own chat group..it helped so much.
bruppert - how many do you hve aggie?
sue - aggie- I'm meeting with mine tomorrow. She hasn't started on any portfolios!!!!!!!!!!!
aggieb(NC) - I am working with 8 .. a bit too much,,
bruppert - it really did!! I did much better than I thought I would
sue - aggie- are you going to be an assessor?
aggieb(NC) - two are bankers , i am helping them only on entry 4
sue - bruppert-are you redoing any AC stuff?
aggieb(NC) - I plan to work as an assessor,, I have that in my summer plans if they are in NC, SC or Va.
bruppert - sue - I am redoing Literacy and Science/Math portfolios and I will do the Literacy AC since it is first grade and try to pull it up high
sue - aggie-- when will they announce? If it's in july I can do it
sue - bruppert- I'll read if your want
aggieb(NC) - I hope they decide earlier since the process is in cylces now
sue - LOL! son just called and asked to be picked up from work. he has my car!!!!!!!!
bruppert - I would be honored to have your read thanks sue!! Aggie has offered to support me too
BELLACRU - My mentors are suggesting that we do one write up a month. I have completed entry 4. I am currently working on the Literacy write up for our January metting. We are doing SS for Feb and Sci for Mar. Does this sound doable?
sue - s.rotolo@cox.net
bruppert - sue , some things never change do they for me too
sue - don't forget the dot or it will arrive in the inbox of a 14 yr old boy. he regularly forwards errant emails
aggieb(NC) - your pace for work is very personal.. but I had to reflect and rewrite so much, I had several going on at one time..
sue - bella- when id your due?
BELLACRU - 4-15
aggieb(NC) - The more I read my entries, they stronger I could make them, especially after they got cold
bruppert - I am not a good writer and that was my downfall for the boards
BELLACRU - That's what I thought, too. I am doing the science unit in January just in case I need to redo. I am also doing the community helper unit for ss.
sue - bruppert--literally had a book fall in my lap
bruppert - what to you mean, sue?
BELLACRU - We are meeting a total of six times. I feel more should have be provided.
sue - science process skills by ostlund. has so good basic ideas to start the inquiry process
aggieb(NC) - Bell you still need to be thinking and planning and reflecting.. just because it is written doesn' t mean it is ready to be mailed.. that was it for me! but it worked to rewrite and reflection..
sue - LOL_ I hit the stack of books next to the computer'
BELLACRU - I am trully uneasy about the whole process. When I saw the percentages for passing, my feathers fell.
BELLACRU - I am mapping my plans for each unit, but so much is going on with my classroom and extra assignments that makes it hard to think about one thing. I find that everything is getting tangled up in my mind. Is this normal?
bruppert - I have two of the science books they said get, doing what scientist do and the NSTA pathways to the science standards
BELLACRU - I have doing what scientist do
aggieb(NC) - bell what state are you from?
BELLACRU - AL
bruppert - yes dear BELLACRU this all is part of the joy of this journey!!
BELLACRU - Thank you, bruppert, for validating my thoughts.
aggieb(NC) - Bell I wasn't sure until the day I got my scores back.. I hope this helps!! but you can be almost certain if you follow the directions on how the entry will be scored!
brenda - where can I find the book, Doing What Scientists Do? Who wrote it?
BELLACRU - I am a fine print reader. I just keep thinking if I follow the directions, surely everything will be ok. Even if I have to bank.
BELLACRU - Ellen Doris wrote it, Brenda
aggieb(NC) - brenda, I have my book for sale
BELLACRU - Heinemann
bruppert - sue, you still picking up each book?
brenda - How much do you want for it?
Wash - Good night for everybody! I´m form Brazil and I´d like to try typing English...Anybody with patiente?
bruppert - I ordered my book either from amazon.com or barnesa nd noble
sue - gotta go
bruppert - did sue leave aggie?
Becky - Hi, all!
BELLACRU - Well, girls. I must call it a night. My family is grilling steaks. After the first, its back to the diet plan
bruppert - guess she did./
Becky - Congrats, Aggie!
Becky - I made it too.
brenda - Becky, how did you do at the AC?
Becky - OK...good enough I guess.
BELLACRU - Good luck, everybody. Take care!!
bruppert - same to you bellacru
brenda - I was told that there was only one 15 min break halfway between? I s that right?
aggieb(NC) - Yes, miss aggieb is NBCT... for one of my presents I got a shirt that said on the from, I AM.. and on the back it read NBCT.. so precious of a gift
bruppert - yes, that is true, but you want to keep working as your juices are up and moving.
Becky - Yes, but there was plenty of time. I only took the break cause I could. I wasn't desperate.
Becky - Cool! I want one of those shirts.
bruppert - I love your shirt aggieb, that is so cute!! My sister n law's best friend passed and she was asking me what she should do for her friend...
Becky - I have been commanded to appear at a school board meeting next week to be honored.
aggieb(NC) - The AC is not too bad.. just answer the questions!!
Becky - Who gave you the shirt, aggie
bruppert - aggie you say that now but you were so NERVOUS before you went in to take them. I remember keeping you calm!!
aggieb(NC) - Don't let anyone hear me say this,, but yes, answer the questions first and put the fluff last if you can;t think of anything else.. sometime the fluff helps you to think.. poor advice.. but answer the questions and evidence can be lifted from it
Becky - I didn't mind the AC. I felt it wasn't something I could have studies for.
aggieb(NC) - my college kid had it made for me. it is darling
bruppert - to me the AC was the shorten version of the portfolio just trying to answer the questions
Becky - I have to go. Bye, all!
aggieb(NC) - I wish I had not been so nervous about it.. but there is no need to be..
bruppert - you know they record these sessions aggie, LOL
bruppert - you were too just worried and wanting to do well for sure and I knew you would. you have a gift of being able to express yourself very well.
aggieb(NC) - Yes and right in front of the camera, I was talking to myself.. I said, " if you don't get it together you are going to fail
brenda - Aggie, was that on your video?
bruppert - good show!! aggiewhere did you do this?
aggieb(NC) - Bruppert, I have had a lot of obstactles to overcome in this life,, so I have to fight hard for what I get.
bruppert - I am loving ;you more with each admission you give!! lol
aggieb(NC) - Yes, it was just what I said,, I said it plain as day!! I had to give my self a pep talk,, I was very nervous. I had aching wrist.. the test was delay by 45 minutes.
bruppert - LET'S SEE WE SHOULD SEE THE MOVIE TOETHER -THELMA AND LOUISE
aggieb(NC) - They only can lift the evidence on the keyboard.. not what you say!!
brenda - Do they video you at the AC? Is that so people won't cheat?
bruppert - I have obstacles still to overcome too and I am being empathetic to you as I have done the same thing too.
bruppert - No one was videoing me when I did the AC
aggieb(NC) - It was not a good first start for me at the AC.. it took the third test for me to realize what at stake.
aggieb(NC) - There was a camera stuck right in my face
aggieb(NC) - At least it was mounted on the monitor
brenda - Just when you think there can't be any more pressure!!!
bruppert - Oh no, not at the place I was at. but they could have been video taping and I didn't see it but it was not in my FACE
aggieb(NC) - got to run and check on dad!
bruppert - yeah I say it was pressure!!
aggieb(NC) - Brenda, I am not sure, but I had a camera but I knew in advance. I had visited the center
aggieb(NC) - Bruppert, email me.. I am here to help if you need me
bruppert - I will check with my friends if we had one I honestly didn't see one that I remember
bruppert - I will email you -- I am officially starting the process Jan. 1
bruppert - right now I have two books I want to get read and finish knitting a Christmas stocking for my daughter n law
bruppert - by Jan. 1 so I better get busy. see you aggie and thanks for being you. I love it!!
