tam - I'm working on NBPTS-mcgen
Nell - I'm an advanced candidate working on EASS. I'm having trouble with my videos.
tam - What kind of trouble?
tam - I had my share of troubles with those too. Finally got my science/math video OK'd by my mentor. That was really tough. I am looking for help with Big Idea right now.
Nell - My students are not talking enough. I have made three videos and they are not good. I am going to try to change the lesson plan a little and try again next week. Are you a 2003 candidate?
Hiddy Ho - Give a few of your video questions on NBPTS
tam - Yes I am a new 2003 candidate. My students were like that too. We just had to practice a few times. I have third graders and they were really kind of scared in front of the video. We just video taped informally a few times too so they could get used to the camera.
Hiddy Ho - I'm a NBCT in EA/YA Art
Nell - I have moved down to the third grade this year. I would have changed certification areas but I scored 3.5 on entry 1 and 4 last year for EASS. I was teaching 8th grade last year.
tam - I had to really put a lot of thought into the type of lesson I used. The more interaction the lesson required, the more talking I found they did. We also talked about their responses. I let them know it was OK to make mistakes and that their group would help them along. Wow-- from8th to third. What a drastic jump.
Nell - Middle School students are more thoughtful of what they say on camera. I think my third graders would love it.
tam - I did my video four times if that makes you feel any better. Do you think they're nervous?
tam - What type of video are you having to do . I'm not familiar with your certification area.
Nell - Yes, quiet different. I have taught 1st, K, and 6th and 7th. I really like a self contained classroom best. The upper grades of are departmentalized. I'm enjoying this age group. Yes, I'm sure they are nervous. I am having to borrow them during my planning time. I don't have every day to teach them the background like I would like to. and the topic
Hiddy Ho - Take a close look at your entry standards and try to match a lesson that captures all of those standards...without making the teaching and interaction appear staged.
Nell - I have to do 1 video whole group but with a lot of interation and small group for the other one. The whole group has to do with civic competency, citizenship, laws, constitution. The lesson plan I'm working on is about the new law arming pilots. Do they agree, would they feel safer if they are flying with an armed or unarmed pilot. Then discuss how laws are made and how citizens can be a part of the process.
Hiddy Ho - Try scripting you lesson on arming pilots to address all the standards .
tam - Sounds like a good topic- are you borrowing eight graders for this or using the third graders?
Nell - 8th graders. The certification area is ages 11--15.
DLee - I am trying for EAGen; switched from MCGen just before Christmas break. Teach 6th grade.
DLee - I am writing up my entry 2 (which is 15 mind. discussion in small group about a SS theme/issue and intergrating it with another subject area.
Linda - I'm a NBCT in EAYA/CTE. Anyone in this area?
tam - I'm wondering how many of them have ever flown on an airplane. I know with 3rd graders if they can't relate to the subject matter, it's really hard for them to discuss or write about it. Just a thought.
Nell - If I had known that I would be teaching third this year, I would have waited. That's true. They have not flown. I just thought with all the terrorists activity they possibly would bre able to discuss the topic. I may have to think of something else.
tam - Maybe if you found some articles in magazines/newspapers re: this topic and discussed it before hand, they would have some more background. Yes, you'd think with all the terrorist activity, they'd really be involved.
tam - to DLee- I am MCGen- Do you guys do the Big Idea in Science in EAGen?
Nell - Yes, we read an article and discussed different protective measures for citizens.
DLee - Yes -- it's almost the same, but I did have to re-do my video for both entry 2 and 3. Plus I am having to re-do all of entry 1.
DLee - I would have stayed with MCGen, however, I just didn't feel that I knew enough about the 7 through 10 age group. I have taught 6 through 9 graders.
tam - I'm stuck on the big idea. Oh my- you've had alot of extra to do. I did a lesson on water conservation and am trying to figure out the big idea concept. I've read everything and it's still confusing.
DLee - My email is Mrs-Lee4Kids@carolina.rr.com --- email me
Nell - I think that something to do with space would be interesting tothe children and you could get a"Big Idea" from that toipic.
DLee - There are a lot of sites to help you out. Let me get my manual
tam - OK I'll do that. Nell- I can't change my topic now , it's too late. I have so much time invested into it. I'll just keep researching.
DLee - Okay -- with water conservation: I think I would select using the Big idea as Change, consistancy, and measurement
tam - that's what I thought and they someone suggested systems - because of the water cycle. Then I was totally confused. Maybe a combo of both, but is that OK
DLee - You could do systems
tam - I've tried to Yahoo group and didn't get much of a response. Maybe I'll try again. My mentor is going to do more research for me also. I think that manual is so confusing. Oh well , I guess I'll just keep reading until it clicks with me.
DLee - Do you belong to any of the yahoo MC gen list?
tam - OK DLee thanks for the help. I am loggin off. Need to get my kids to bed. Yes I am on the yahoo group, so will try again some time to ask my question again.
tam - Thanks for your help.
DLee - okay ... email me -- I'll find a link for you
