sonja - Hello
sonja - Is anyone a nbpts candidate?
Wanda (SC) - hello, I am
sonja - I am a retake candidate.
Wanda (SC) - I am EA Science
Wanda (SC) - I am EA Science
Wanda (SC) - what area are you?
sonja - I am ea ss/history
Wanda (SC) - this is my first go round
sonja - Are u 20023?
Wanda (SC) - yes, 2002-03
sonja - I needed 88 points to certify!
Wanda (SC) - what are you retaking?
sonja - I am only working on one section this time.
Wanda (SC) - all 4 portfolio areas?
sonja - Promoting social understanding
sonja - No only one it gets to expensive
Wanda (SC) - what sstate are you in
sonja - Ky
sonja - And u?
Wanda (SC) - south carolina
sonja - It is a hard journey!
Wanda (SC) - boy is it ever!
sonja - I work full time and have a family. I would like to work with a mentor if I could get one! Hi stenz
stenz - I'm a retake candidate
Wanda (SC) - so do i
Wanda (SC) - i work fulltime and have a family too
Sarah, in CNY - Hi all, I'm a banker too
sonja - Well join the crowd. I felt really heartbroken when I didnt qualify!
stenz - It is a good idea to have a mentor. Try going to the nbpts sight for your state and see who can mentor.
sonja - Do u have one now?
stenz - I don't think I'll ever get over the disappointment
Wanda (SC) - i have someone at my school who has qualified
Sarah, in CNY - I'm finding it hard to get focused again
sonja - Hi Sarah!
Wanda (SC) - she is helping me
Sarah, in CNY - I've been thru worse but my son's with the 82nd Airborne so I've been distracted...
stenz - Sonja- I hope you find a mentor
Wanda (SC) - Sara, best of luck, I wish your son well
sonja - Thats why I am doing one enrty at a time! Has he been deployed?
stenz - Try looking at the process as a 3 year program- and take your time
sonja - I hope I find a mentor also!
Sarah, in CNY - He'll be fine... ME, who knows!
Wanda (SC) - its tough being a MOM
stenz - That is a legitimate distraction
Sarah, in CNY - Nope, starting Ranger school Sunday for 2 months but his best buddies were this week
Wanda (SC) - very ligitimate
sonja - I have been teaching 19 years and 3 degrees but this has been the hardest!
Sarah, in CNY - I've warned my students that they'll have to be understanding about my stress, they were sweet.
stenz - I think it's about well you can write about what you do - but in my case it was not having enough time to complete an ac question.
Sarah, in CNY - I'm redoing entries 1 & 2 to be SURE that I get those 25 points
sonja - Are there any examples of the entry formats ,etc, from nBPTSW?
sonja - NBPTS?
Wanda (SC) - entry one for me is teaching a concept over time
Wanda (SC) - is that the same for most areas?
stenz - When I went to my state's info meeting they had sample writing entries to share.
Sarah, in CNY - There's no one else around doing this so the group is fabulous for ideas/support
Sarah, in CNY - umm, thought they weren't supposed to be "sharing" those written entries
Wanda (SC) - there are sample entries?
Sarah, in CNY - uless I misunderstood- the retired AC prompt samples are available
sonja - Is 88 points too far to reach for?
Sarah, in CNY - sonja, nope, I've heard of larger numbers
sonja - Where would u get the retired prompts?
stenz - sonja - go to the nbpts site and figure out the points on the site under retaking
sonja - 25 points ! u almost made it!
Sarah, in CNY - sonja, there were some available online at NBPST or maybe it was a link from there, check the candidate support spot
stenz - There are retired ac questions on the nbpts site
Wanda (SC) - AC prompt samples, what is that?
wizzlewolf - Hello NB people!
sonja - I sent my 300 dollars in today for the entry.
Sarah, in CNY - HI WIZ! your site is THE BEST
sonja - Hello wizzlewolf!
stenz - A sampling of the type of case study/questions to answer
Randi - Hi, everyone...
Sarah, in CNY - AC=assessment center prompts are the senerios (I'm spelling exempt)
wizzlewolf - In every subject area, retired prompts are included in the SCORING GUIDE of that subject area portfolio. They are available online at the NBPTS site. I can give you the exact address if you want it.
stenz - Thanks Wizz
Sarah, in CNY - Hi Randi
Wanda (SC) - oh
sonja - Wizz, what are the odds of 2nd candidates qualfying? Please do!
sonja - Hi Randi
Sarah, in CNY - If you haven't found wisslewolf's site, you really are missing a tremenously helpful site
sonja - Hey It is Friday. Spelling is excused
Randi - Sarah, what is CNY?
wizzlewolf - Sonja, I don't even understand the question. What do you mean "2nd candidate qualifying"?
Sarah, in CNY - Central New York- where is snows & snows & snows...
stenz - Is it still snowing?
sonja - I wish I had his site when I was going through the 1st time.
Randi - gotcha. I'm a Long Islander originally...
Sarah, in CNY - oh, a Southerner
Wanda (SC) - which site is that?
wizzlewolf - Sonja, do you mean what percentage of candidates certify during the second year?
Randi - Even further south now...a Georgia peach
Sarah, in CNY - Yes, it's still snowing- we saw the sun today briefly tho
stenz - Having a mentor to read and reread your portfolio really, really helps
sonja - I am a retake. 88 points in certifying
stenz - Yes- I would like to know Wiz
sonja - correct, Wizz!
wizzlewolf - I have never seen exact numbers on that. However, I am sure it is much higher than the first year statistic of 45%. NB is not quick to share those kind of numbers.
sonja - Do u have any stats on that?
sonja - I wonder why?>
Sarah, in CNY - Wanda www.wizzlewoulf.com/nbc.html
wizzlewolf - I don't know why. However in all the years I have helped candidates it seems the second year is the charm for most retakers.
stenz - I heard that the IL stats were 39% passing the first time. I wonder how the other states did?
wizzlewolf - Sarah, NO NO
Wanda (SC) - thank you
gail - hi everybody!
Randi - hi, Gail
wizzlewolf - http://www.wizzlewolf.com/nbc.html
stenz - That is for this year because of the change in the test
gail - has anyone completed a video?
Sarah, in CNY - ooops, sorry, typos
sonja - how did u become involved with this process?
Randi - Ha! I wish!
wizzlewolf - No "u", it is wizzlewolf like the animal wolf
wizzlewolf - Sonja, are you talking to me?
Wanda (SC) - thanks wizz, got it
gail - Wiz, how can you get good sound quality?
Sarah, in CNY - That's why I have it saved in my "favorites"
wizzlewolf - Stenz, the percentages can vary from state to state. For example, NC and Florida have high passing rate because the candidates have a lot of support.
sonja - Correct ! Wizzlewolf.
naneb - Hi wizzlewolf!!
Randi - gail, I bought a mike a radio shack for $50. It sounds GREAT
stenz - There is a special microphone you can buy that would attach to your video recorder
sonja - Ky has about 300 plus certified candidates.
wizzlewolf - Oh, I found out about NB from an ad in a magazine back in 1994. I wanted to do it but when I sent for materials I realized I couldn't afford it.
Wanda (SC) - is that really necessary?
Randi - Called a boundary mike..it picks up everything in the room
wizzlewolf - HEY HEY HEY Nanny
naneb - MS has lots of certified teachers too
gail - Randi, did you hook it to your video camera?
Sarah, in CNY - Gail, I know one lady who hung a mic from a hook in the general area she was working.
Wanda (SC) - I have heard of alot who have done the video and passed without the microphone
wizzlewolf - Then in 1998, Florida offered to pay the application fee so I finally got to do it.
naneb - I used the mic from the camera and it was good enough, depends on the camera
stenz - It needs to be audible- the write up is where the points are.
Randi - yes, and I put it on a table. The sound quality was phenomenal. I tried and tried without it, but the built in mike didn't pick up the kids. Only my big mouth
gail - If you don't have good sound, do you write up what was said?
Wanda (SC) - okay, i see
wizzlewolf - Another type of mike that is good is a PZM mike you hook up to your camera and it picks up a lot
Wanda (SC) - i was told by someone who is an accessor
sonja - Tax deductible.. I had to put 2300 dollars up front...........but when i become certified I recoup 1700 back!
Randi - the directions say they have to hear all of what you say and most of what the kdis say
Wanda (SC) - that it is more of how you write up the video, than how the video looks
gail - You guys are answering the questions before I ask them! Ha!Ha!
Sarah, in CNY - Gail, you can but you REALLY cherish the limited amount of space they give you for writing
naneb - Wiz, my superintendent sent me an email and he wants a copy of my videos, I freaked! he wants to use them to teach principals what good teaching looks like
Randi - Wizz--i asked for a PZM and radio shack told me this boundary mike replaced it
Wanda (SC) - they said that they read what you wrote on the video first and that counts alot more
stenz - Naneb- your videos must have been perfect
wizzlewolf - Nan, that is great. I burned my videos!! LOL
gail - has anyone completed entry 4?
stenz - I'm LOL too
sonja - How many videos did u do Nan?
naneb - they are awful!! He wants all of our NBCT videos, my district has 37 NBCT
Sarah, in CNY - Gail, Yep, that one passed last year
Randi - I'm TRYING to complete entry 4 but I find it boring--too much tooting my own horn
naneb - I think I will tell him I don't have them
wizzlewolf - Yes, boundary and PZM is the same thing. However, I wanted people to know that some places call them PZM (or boundary)
Randi - Hi Stacey!!!
Randi - I see
naneb - 2, Sonja I certified in 2001
Stacey (GA) - Hi what part of Ga are you in?
sonja - Hi Stacey!
Stacey (GA) - Are you attending the academies?
naneb - my behavior video is pretty good but my literacy video is awful
wizzlewolf - Randi, do some of your other entries then come back to Entry 4 later. It may refresh you.
Randi - Forsyth county--north of Atlanta, yes to the academies
tmw - Hello everyone!
wizzlewolf - Hello tmw.. Are you a candidate?
Sarah, in CNY - Nan, such a tragedy that your videos were taped overThey couldn't pay me enough to allow them for public viewing!!
Stacey (GA) - I have revised entry 1 and now I feel extremely stressed out
Randi - That's exactly what I was thinking of trying--I mean if its boring to me, I can only imagine what an assessor would think...
tmw - I am and EC-GEN candidate.
sonja - Documented Accomplishments? Isnt that entry 4
stenz - Stacey why do you feel stressed out
Randi - Me, too Stacey...I thought I had it done so well, and got bummed at all the questions and suggestions my mentor made...
Stacey (GA) - I was in the middle of a video right before break and had what I thought was going to be an excellent video. My wonderful team leader walked into my room to introduce a new student
gail - yes, how many accomplishments is a good number?
naneb - Randi, you will rewrie those entries until you know them by heart in your sleep
Stacey (GA) - Of course, new student no consent, etc
Randi - I know--I had a fire drill in the middle of the best attempt at videotaping yet
sonja - After sending in money what do u receive if retake candidate?
stenz - I wrote over entry 4 - 4 times, I refused to do it again- however I got a 3.0
tmw - What area is everyone in or going for?
naneb - I had a kid pick his nose and hold it up to the camera!!
Wanda (SC) - wow, great stenz
naneb -
Stacey (GA) - Another video was completely blank after transferring from VHS-C to VHS
Randi - I know, and the questions will help. I have to not take it so personally. I tell you, this is harder than giving birth. And I had a 10 pounder!
Wanda (SC) - i am EA science
Sarah, in CNY - Gail, there's no #, just show how the STUDENTS benefit- not only "our" students- and the community
stenz - Naneb- come-on show it to the principals - let them know what it's like to be in the trenches
gail - i'm exceptional children
naneb - my behavior video is just me and one student, I may send that one
Randi - tmw, I'm spec ed, too
naneb - me too, Gail
tmw - Is this just a general NBPTS chat?
Sarah, in CNY - Me 2!
Wanda (SC) - i had a 10 pound 12 oz baby
gail - what skill were you working on naneb?
stenz - I'm sped
Wanda (SC) - that was for randi, lol
tmw - Wanda, what part of South Carolina are you from?
Stacey (GA) - Okay, I have a question. I am mentoring a studnet (not sped) that was on my team last year. Could I count this as a documented accomplishment by getting parent to verify. She was failing last grading period. She is no passing every subject
Wanda (SC) - i am in Dillon
Wanda (SC) - that is just north of florence
Stacey (GA) - I can't spell, sorry
Randi - And you lived to tell about it...
naneb - we completed a worksheet together to help him target behaviors for a contract with his regular ed teachers
tmw - I live in SC too.
Wanda (SC) - where in SC tmw?
Michel - hi
Randi - naneb, what grade was the kid?
Wanda (SC) - stacey i think that you can
stenz - Stacey - can you relate to the student impact, family, community/.
naneb - 6th grade, middle school, very ADHD
gail - naneb, you mean you set him up on a behavior contract?
Randi - hi, michel
Michel - what are we discussing?
Stacey (GA) - Her mother has bragged in meetings (per her teachers) about the difference I have made
Wanda (SC) - thanks tmw,,,i dont know how to do that back
stenz - Get it in writing.
Michel - that's great Stacey
Randi - I'm thinking about doing a one-on-one with an 8th grader of mine...emotionally disturbed, ADHD, newly mainstreamed...
wizzlewolf - Stacey, you can count that if it is above and beyond the call of duty
Stacey (GA) - her parents are divorced, mom works at night she doesn't have much "female contact
Michel - I need a behavior contract for 2 of my students
sonja - I have to find a broad social topic to redo. I thought about stereotyping people living in Applachia. One of the major stations is wanting to do Bevely Hillbillies spin off..I read the article to kids in class and they were very aggravated at the poking fun at attitude!
naneb - the meeting I videotaped was to help him focus on behaviors that interfered with his learning in the reg. ed classroom, he selected the behaviors and we discussed alternatives and rewards and consequences and then met with his parents and teachers, it was great
Sarah, in CNY - I teach High school resource, any ideas to help student memorize their vocab words- my kid has no strong learning style & is borderline MR?
naneb - Stacey, ask her mother to write all of that down for you and use it for verification
Randi - My guy is so very social--I think he would just SHINE in a videotape--he really WANTS to be successful, but is so new at mainstream...
gail - naneb, was the parent/teachers meeting in the video?
sonja - check reading lady.com sarah
Randi - nan, was your video 15 minutes?
stenz - Sarah- find out what the students strengths are and teach the vocab using a strength
Stacey (GA) - I am teaching 6th graders -very immature I have gotten the Skills Streaming book-very excited about how my students will benefit and how super entry 3 will be
naneb - Sarah, teach the words in context, I don't think memorizing vocab really helps, kids have to see it, write, read it and use it to learn it
Sarah, in CNY - stenz- thanks!
sonja - Stacey can u use report cards, test scores to verify improvement?
stenz - Your welcome , Sarah
naneb - I think the behavior video was 10 minutes and literacy video was 15 but I might be worng
Stacey (GA) - are we allowed?
naneb - oops worng=wrong!!
Stacey (GA) - I have asked mom she has agreed I just wasn't sure if I could use it since she isn't sped
Randi - thanks, nan--I don't know if a one-on-one would last 15 minutes, and was worried about it
Sarah, in CNY - nan, the words are taught in context in regular ed, review helps but the sheer number of words in all content areas is overwhelming- to both of us
wizzlewolf - Sonja, the data from those sources is definite evidence of student achievement
naneb - Gail, no I did video tape the meeting but it was not a very good tape and so I used the other video
sonja - if u have parental permision white out identfiying history
Stephanie(MS) - hello!
naneb - Randi, I had plenty of minuts to make it 15 if I had needed it
Stacey (GA) - okay thanks for the help
Randi - I think I'm gonna go for it this week--we just got report cards, so we can review. If I don't like it I'll attempt it with him and another couple of kids
naneb - Sarah, write an accommodation so they don't have to know all of the words for every class
gail - hi stephanie!
Randi - Maybe I will, too...I might not be a very good judge!
Stephanie(MS) - big group this week!
Sarah, in CNY - stenz- she just slightly is stronger in visual, so I used quia.com to enter the vocab. & def. - even with practice, discussion and a word bank- she barely passes- God help her with the high stakes tests this year (shudder)
Randi - Hi Steph--how are the little ones?
Stephanie(MS) - great! we can still threaten santa claus is watching - so they have been good
stenz - Just go with key concept - core of information about the subject - that reduces the amount of vocab
sonja - How about the topic, Wizzlewolf? Would it score well?
Jo - Hi everyone!
Randi - Steph, di dyou get anywhere with your assessment?
Stacey (GA) - hi jo
Randi - Hi Jo!!!
Sarah, in CNY - stenz- I wish I could but the state won't allow it- she has to pass the tests & the class to graduate with a diploma- she works VERY hard, thank goodness! a great kid!
wizzlewolf - Sonja, I lost you. What topic. Please repeat
Stephanie(MS) - i did!! I am going to look at what skills this kid needs to transition to kind.
Jo - Stacey, I just sent you email..... I have taken a break from everything and will get your entry back to you.
Stacey (GA) - I just sent you a reply. No Rush!! I was checking to make sure you received it
Stephanie(MS) - and then go to the actual class she will be in next year - once per week assess and then teach the other 4 days to the skills she is lacking
stenz - sounds tough Sarah- go multi-sensory approach
Stacey (GA) - I continue to have difficulties with my internet services
Stephanie(MS) - skills based on thorough collaboration with sped teachers, regular kind teachers, moms input and even the kids themselves asking them what you need to know on day 1 of kind.
Stacey (GA) - Jo, thanks for the Skills Streaming suggestion. I am very excited about implementing
Sarah, in CNY - stenz- will do, she just transferred in this year so we don't have a lot to go by
stenz - I need information on transitioning to kindergarten. Does anyone have a website I could go to?
sonja - Steroeotyping people that live in Applachia............One of the major networks want to do spinoff of Bevely Hillbillies...
Jo - Well my husband networked this computer and now it logs me off when I am in the middle of something. Be glad you are not married to a frustrated GEEK!
Stacey (GA) - I would love to use it with all of the sixth graders on my team
Randi - sounds like a plan--will she go to the same school she's in for pre-K? My daughter was in pre-K disabilities, but went to K at a different school--it was a tough transition
Jo - I think the Skills Streaming books are great and I had never heard of them until I went through this process.
Stephanie(MS) - yeah - same school - and i even know exactly which teacher and classroom she will be in
Randi - Oh, that sounds so great!!!
wizzlewolf - Oh Sonja, I think that is a VERY valid and interesting topic.
Jo - I see naneb is here........... did you change schools this year?
Stephanie(MS) - the plan is for this to help her make a smooth transition and to get her in regular ed for most of the day - she has down syndrome
sonja - I shared an article in newspaper with my class..........I could tie in many cultures with this approach
naneb - i did a 2 day workshop with Arnie Goldstein, he was a friend of my college advisor and shoe brought him to my district for the training
Jo - How are you doing, Randi?
naneb - shoe=she
naneb - No, same school!
Randi - It's been a stressful week for me! But got good news today!!!!!
stenz - Stephanie and Randi - do you know a site I could go to to learn about transition planning to kindergarten
Sarah, in CNY - sonja- you could also allude to stereotypes of those with disablilities
naneb - still thinking about changing but it is much better now, new principal
Jo - WHat news?
sonja - Wizzlewolf you dont know how helpful this has been to me. I came very close not going back and doing boards!
Stacey (GA) - randi, can you share?
Stephanie(MS) - there are TONS out there - just go to google.com and search for kindergarten readiness
wizzlewolf - Sonja, you just have to keep trying and have confidence.
Stephanie(MS) - what is that randi!?
Randi - Personal stuff--had to have a breast biopsy, but it came back good--have to have a recheck in 6 months, then all clear!
Jo - stenz, there is info on the Yahoo groups about transition sites.
sonja - That would also be very inclusive in the concept/
Stacey (GA) - Be like to little engine--I think I can I think I can
stenz - Thanks Jo
Stephanie(MS) - WOWOWOW! GREAT news! my mom is a breast cancer survivor
Jo - Like you need that stress..... good luck, Randi!
Randi - I'm sure you are all so interested in my health problems...but it is SUCH a load off my mind!
Stacey (GA) - Best wishes Randi
Stacey (GA) - Don't we all like to share good things? I know I do. I became an aunt for the 5th time over break. I LOVE being an aunt
Randi - anyway, on to more interesting things...stenz, you asked about prek transitions...
naneb - Great News Randi!!
Stephanie(MS) - are you a mother too satcey?
sonja - I live in a small school district and all school staff have been supportive!
Stacey (GA) - No, not married either
Stacey (GA) - so I have lots of free time to dedicate to this
stenz - Yes Randi- I fear that will be a question I will need to answer and all I have is transitioning from out of high school
Stacey (GA) - Supportive staff means so much
Stephanie(MS) - ahhh - i am married no kids - love being an aunt too - but mine are far away!
wizzlewolf - Sonja, you are very lucky to have support. Many candidates aren't as lucky!
Randi - Steph is the current expert--when I taught preK I didn't have any online assistance
sonja - Randi thats part of being in a teacher family
Stephanie(MS) - stenz - transition is path specific - what area did you pick?
Jo - stenz are you mild/moderate?
stenz - Illinois
Randi - I used to subscribe to "preK today," there's lots of good info there
Sarah, in CNY - Of COURSE we can do it! It's the journey, not the destination. I'm taking the Scenic route!
stenz - I'm Mild/Moderate Ld and had a transition plan ac question that I did not complete - and that is what i'm going to retake
Randi - stenz, it wasn't High School transitions?
Stephanie(MS) - i would say that if your question is on that - focus on FAMILY involvement and on involving allll of the related services people in the plan
sonja - I hope mine is not so bumpy...
stenz - The question was a high schoo student going into a work community
Jo - I think the transitions questions pertain to the legislation that mandates adolescent transition plans.....
stenz - Stephanie- that is what i needed to find out.
Stacey (GA) - what are you guys using to study for the ac
naneb - Do person centered planning and have a big meeting with all of the interested parties
Stephanie(MS) - that sounds practical to me - since there are more laws relating to older kids
Jo - There is lots of info at one site I go to regularly. Stenz, email me and I will send you the info. jrb97@aol.com
Randi - stenz, are you a CEC member? There was an awesome transition (post secondary) article a few months back
Stephanie(MS) - early childhood is family - family - family lol
Jo - Stacey...... don't even think about it yet!!
sonja - Should a person refer to national social studies standards, Wizzlewolf?
Randi - Family till I didn't want to see them anymore, as I recall!!
stenz - I have materal to transition from elementary to middle school and high school transition planning, but no one in my school knows about pre-k kindergarten transitioning
Stephanie(MS) - stacey - i used the standards first and foremost and then a 2003 intro to sped textbook
Randi - stacey--I'm filing all my CEC journals to read AFTER I submit my portfolios
Stephanie(MS) - stenz - do visits into the actual classroom - and be sure that everyone is involved
Sarah, in CNY - well, guys, I need my beauty sleep. thanks so much for the help. have a great week- 'nite
Stacey (GA) - okay, just beginning to freak again. I have to remember to focus
stenz - I studied the standards , CEC journals, textbooks in the ac areas
Jo - I also used a Best Practices book I really like and still use..... from Sopris West
Randi - my daughter's preK transition was a NIGHTMARE!!!
Stephanie(MS) - i am testing on 1/18 - talk about freaking!
Stephanie(MS) - what was WRONG with it randi - so I can learn from it?
wizzlewolf - Sonja, all standards are helpful. National, State, and local. HOWEVER, National Board want to hear about THEIR standards in your writing.
Jo - National SS standards did not help my score in that area!!
Jo - I am going too....... Keep working!
Stacey (GA) - bye Jo. Hope my revision is better
sonja - So restate, refocus and nbpts jargon?
Stacey (GA) - Randi, who is you mentor through the teacher center?
stenz - Thanks for the infor Stephanie- I will probably ask more as I gather the info to study- I don't know when I will be retaking- I haven't heard from nbpts yet
sonja - brb
Randi - Her preK center site was not her home school. She is language delayed and gifted, and they were attempting to have TWO meetings--one with an SLP and one with a gifted kindergarten teacher. Here I am teaching prek in the same county ready to file a due process suit... It was AWFUL--but, as you said, if they had invited all the right parties to ONE meeting...
wizzlewolf - BRB
Randi - My mentor is Kaye, but Jo has been so very helpful also
Stephanie(MS) - wow - identified as gifted in prek!? unheard of here!
stenz - Randi- that is really important piece to this type of transitioning
Randi - She would make a great case study for SOMEONE!!!
Stephanie(MS) - sounds fascinating...
Stephanie(MS) - really - i'm not being sarcastic! lol
Randi - the giftedness was discovered quite by accident. She had a psych as part of her transition testing.
Stacey (GA) - were one of you guys from FLA?
Randi - Her expressive skills were so delayed that she hid that intelligience really well
wizzlewolf - I am from Florida
Stephanie(MS) - has she caught up yet?
Randi - Stacey--I just moved to GA from FL (had to leave after threatening that due process suit
stenz - Randi - Best wishes to you! Bye for now!!
Stephanie(MS) - bye - email me if you need any more info
Stacey (GA) - Do you guys have an early intervention program? I have a neice that is 3 and is not speaking-at all I am extremely concerned
sonja - Randi go to NAGC -National Association Gifted Children
Stephanie(MS) - ok - oops she's gone lol
Randi - We did in palm beach county
wizzlewolf - It is now the law in Florida that all 4 year olds are guaranteed Pre school at public expense.
Stacey (GA) - do you think I should be conerned or am I just trying to identify
sonja - I am gigted talented coodinator for my county
Randi - Steph, her expressive is still nearly two standard deviations below her receptive, but all scores have come up.
sonja - gifted
Stephanie(MS) - and all 3's would be guaranteed public prek anyway
Randi - Thanks, sonja, I will.
Stephanie(MS) - delayed 3's nayway...sorry
Stacey (GA) - any suggestions for how I could gently suggest this to my brother?
Stacey (GA) - He doesn't see anything wrong
Stephanie(MS) - that is tough
sonja - Do a hypothetical kid at school!
Randi - Get one of those communication development milestone charts. Steph, do you have them?
Stacey (GA) - she doesn't interact with other kids(family reunion) she playd by herself
Stephanie(MS) - maybe give him a developmental checklist
Randi - Last year, when I was still in preK I referred to them all the time!
Stacey (GA) - I have one from college-forgot
Stephanie(MS) - i don't - i just get them as needed from the health department
Stacey (GA) - I'll try that. Background he is sped himself as well as wife
Stephanie(MS) - you might just have to say it. "you know - most three year olds should be saying...words...and have sentences that are ...words long"
Stacey (GA) - it tends to be a tender subject with them I just want what's best for my neice
Stephanie(MS) - he might just be thinking that he should know how to "fix" her and is in denial
Stacey (GA) - It's really difficult when my sister son is 2 and speaking in full sentences
Randi - Stacey, they don't see the differences themselves?
Stacey (GA) - no
Stephanie(MS) - if their backgruond is in sped - then they know...just give them time and they might come around - if not she will be "caught" in kind.
Stacey (GA) - of course, they have a 1 1/2 yr old and a newborn. I don't think they are looking that closely
Stephanie(MS) - wait - they are sped teachers - or were IN sped?
wizzlewolf - You really need to get a book on Assessment strategies because trying to explain it in this little box is not going to do it justice.
Stacey (GA) - I guess because of what I know and what should be done at early ages, it's killing me
wizzlewolf - Disregard that last message because it was meant for Suan who logged off
Stacey (GA) - IN sped
sonja - Stacey my middle was speech dalayed....My mother kept on until I had her screened .............3 years in speech and reinforcement from home did the trick.......
Stephanie(MS) - ahhhh - then disregard - you will just have to tell them
Randi - that's how I felt with my little girl--a little knowledge is a scary thing sometimes
Stacey (GA) - they don't work with her at all. She points to everthing
sonja - She is now in 7th grade and doing great
Randi - sonja, that's so good to hear...
Stacey (GA) - I'm afraid she withdraws. My brother need parenting skills. He screams at her
Stephanie(MS) - and she might just be delayed from lack of attention from having a housefull of babies. she might catch up when the 1.5 starts talking more
Stephanie(MS) - ahhhh
Stacey (GA) - I wish they would give her to me
Randi - God--how hard to sit back and watch all that, Stacey
Randi - Where in FL are they?
Stacey (GA) - Actually, my brother is the reason I went into sped
Stephanie(MS) - how far away do you live?
Stacey (GA) - Tampa
sonja - Big brother?
Stacey (GA) - I am guardian in their will (I talked them into making a will) I have considered trying to push legal issues
Stacey (GA) - a good 7 hours yes 3 years older
Randi - Stacey--think long and hard before you go there...
Stacey (GA) - I know- mom said the same thing
Randi - Are they being abusive?
Stephanie(MS) - yeah - that is tough, but would it do any good - or would they just go to foster care?
Stacey (GA) - I just get frustrated. Other issues are involved
Randi - or do you feel that they are incapable because of their own special needs?
Stacey (GA) - I think possible neglectful
Stacey (GA) - No it's not special needs
Stephanie(MS) - my neices are "suspected" of being abused and when the school reported it their family moved at least 20 hours away from everyone at home
Stacey (GA) - Sister in law was LD and he had a TBI at
Stacey (GA) - I'm afraid that we would loose all contact if I mention even getting help for her delays
Stacey (GA) - age 4
sonja - TBI?
Randi - Can the pediatrician get involved?
Stacey (GA) - Tramatic Brain Injury
Stephanie(MS) - well the tbi *might* explain him screaming/ losing his temper...
Stacey (GA) - I don't even know if she goes to the pediatrician
Stacey (GA) - I know she didn't get her last set of shots
Stephanie(MS) - you could call whoever gives them their immunizations and while they shouldn't give you any information
Randi - I was wondering...maybe if it came from a professional outside the family
sonja - How about day care ?
Stacey (GA) - NO mom stays at home with kids
Stephanie(MS) - you can tell them anything and ask that they speak to the family...
Randi - It doesn't sound like there is any easy answer here, stacey...
sonja - Peer stimulation?
Stacey (GA) - they qualify for WIC--would the state keep then monitored for doctor visits?
Stacey (GA) - no
Stephanie(MS) - maybe call the health department or whoever coordinates early intervention there and suggest that they do a home visit or find them or whatever
Stephanie(MS) - i think so - stacey
Stacey (GA) - I was hoping to get her into some Pre K program for peer stimulation
Randi - Now THAT'S worth a pone call...
Randi - the WIC I mean
sonja - how many kids again?
Stacey (GA) - that get governmnet milk and cheese etc-low income
Stacey (GA) - 3
Stephanie(MS) - in my state i *think* that they don't get wic if the shots aren' current...
Randi - She could really take off in the right setting. It's funny how quick words can come if no one is responding to pointing and grunting!!
Stacey (GA) - that makes me feel better( shots)
sonja - Handful!
Stacey (GA) - thanks to all of you for letting me vent and giving adivce.
Randi - steph the same thing happened to me a few minutes ago!
sonja - I have 3 girls . 14, 12, 9.
Stephanie - call early intervention there - find it online and get in touch...
Randi - stacey when are your portfolios due?
Stacey (GA) - april 15
sonja - K5?
Stacey (GA) - yours?
Stacey (GA) - I don't know of any K5
Randi - March 15, and I'm starting to stress
Stephanie - ok - dumb question - wish wizzlewolf was still here...
Stacey (GA) - wow
Stephanie - does the AC cover gifted ed as well?
Stephanie - i am 3/15 too
Stacey (GA) - Good luck
Stacey (GA) - How far are you?
Stacey (GA) - Yes
Stacey (GA) - it does cover gifted
Stephanie - the ac for ecya-ens?
Randi - I'm about done with 1 (I think) and halfway through 4. Have the background done for 2 and 3, but no videos yet
Stacey (GA) - I don't think so -sorry
Randi - GIFTED?? Oh, give me strength!
Stacey (GA) - last message for stephaine
Stacey (GA) - Gifted has its on certification
Stephanie - ooh - well - c you guys next week!
Stephanie - you know - this is tons more helpful to me than the yahoo group itself!
Randi - i agree, steph!
