Denise - Are you all candidates?
sherry - yes and you?
Denise - yes-MC-Gen
sherry - ldse
Denise - Is your deadline for your portfolio nearing?
sherry - april
Denise - Mine too.I'm beginning to get a little antsy!
Jana - mine too
Jana - Have you taped your entries yet?
Denise - No, I am planning to soon. You?
Jana - I tried - my audio was not very good - but I liked the lesson and other aspects - I'll try again
sherry - mine was fuzzy too
Jana - how clear does this need to be? - I taped in the class and there are background noises.
sherry - i am sure the background noise is fine......as long as they can hear you
sherry - and the background isnt too distracting
Jana - I am joining Weight Watchers as a result - maybe I'll mention it in my analysis
Denise - I agree with sherry.
gail - if you use a mini tape (i don't know what its called) and record to VHS, you can increase the sound
Jana - isn't that editing?
sherry - you are joining WW as a result of NB?
Jana - no - the video image
Denise - I have used the vhs-c. It's also easier to choose the exact 15 minutes that you want.
stenz - Anyone out there here when the AC center for Exceptional Needs Category will be?
sherry - no editing would be doctoring the actual tape or content not the audio....
gail - no, you can't submit the small video recording, so you record to the large tape, that's not editing
sherry - oh jana......i see........
Jana - that's good to know- I'll try recording to the "big" tape again - it may improve
gail - is anybody familiar with S.T.A.R.
Denise - Are you talking about the Standardized Test for assessment of reading program from advantage learning?
stenz - Well I found out that I was not a final candidate for the Golden apple award - I was nominated in Oct.
gail - no, its a program for social skills
Rosy - Gail what does it star stand for?
Denise - no, sorry
gail - Success Through Accepting Responsbility or Stop Think Act Review
Denise - sounds interesting
gail - i'm looking for something to do with a BED/ADHD kid
stenz - Sounds like a plan - Gail
Jana - what social skill are you teachnig and how old is the kid?
gail - the kid is 10 and i'm looking for something regarding impulse control
gail - this is for entry 3
Jana - have you tried anything with self-monitoring - it works with some of my kids
Jana - restraining is good too
gail - i was thinking more along the lines of behavior contract?
stenz - Gail - try picking one specific skill to work on
gail - ok, where do it go from there
Jana - you could show how you and the kid develop a behavior contract
Denise - gail what is your certification area
stenz - I worked with an child with tourettes how to play a game with a peer.
gail - yes, i thought about a functional behavior assessment
gail - i'm k-5 Resource, noncategorical
stenz - We worked on proper social interaction
gail - did you video tape a session working on this?
stenz - My video was a review of the skills and then the peer coming in to play the game.
Jana - I am EH/SED 4th and 5th - you could model to student how you pinpoint the behavior, think of consequences, set goals and come up with realistic contract
stenz - LD Resource teacher 4/5 grade
gail - where are you, stenz
stenz - I'm in IL
teddyjingles - not sure what all has been discussed and this is my first time here....what type of communication skills can we video,
gail - i'm NC
teddyjingles - from WV
Jana - any - communication, reading, writing, language...
ispy - where in WV?
ispy - seen several in here from NC
teddyjingles - southern WV, Mingo County, little town called Delbarton....
stenz - I got a 3.5 on my Entry 3
ispy - hmmmmm even sounds little
teddyjingles - i teach 8th and 6th grade math, lang. arts speci ed
ispy - you go stenz
Sonja - I just wanted to join chat tonight.....retake 2001-2002. Lacked 88 points hitting the big one
teddyjingles - are all 4 entries weighted the same?
gail - Lenoir, not far from Boone and Blowing Rock
Jana - no - 4 is less (I think 12??)
Sonja - I decided to go through the death throes and try it ine entry at a time
stenz - No- teddyjngles entry 4 is worth less
teddyjingles - if 4 is 12, what are the others....i am sooo very CONFUSED
Jana - which entry are you retaking?
ispy - sonja........one at a time?
Jana - others are 16
ispy - i couldnt take that......
Sonja - I am reading promoting social understanding
teddyjingles - is anyone on here already certified
stenz - Banker , Here
Sonja - The financial part of it for one and the mental part----gotta think of family here
teddyjingles - in exceptional needs, four entries, 1-assessment/question tool 2. communication video 3. social video 4. document4ed accomplishments
ispy - yes i know my other half is really suffering thru this with me...
Sonja - I am a ea ss /history
teddyjingles - stenz, what part did you find the hardest? what are you redoing
Sonja - I want to throw an idea on u all for the entry i am redoing
stenz - I am redoing one AC question - lost by 2 points because I didn't finish that question
teddyjingles - i haven't even thought of assessment center yet....i'mjust tyring to get thru portfolio first
Kibe - I just learned about the certification.... it's a bit overwhelming and confusing.
Jana - me too, I scheduled my AC in late May
teddyjingles - i meant national board certification
gail - have you guys made your appts. for assessments
teddyjingles - i havent' even scheduled mine yet..should i go ahead and do it now?
Tina - I'm still waiting for NB to send me my assessment letter. Georgia just paid the last part of my fee, so it will be a couple of weeks.
stenz - Jana- what are you doing in May at the AC - Mild/Moderate Exceptional needs??
Tina - I understand you need the letter to schedule (?)
gail - i heard you were suppose to set the appt when you got your box, but I haven't yet
teddyjingles - what letter do i need?
Tina - I'm about 3/4 of the way through the whole portfolio.
Jana - Yes - you do need a letter to schedule AC
ispy - i think you are supposed to set your appointment with the mental health center when you get the box too
Jana - It will be sent to you when they get all of the verification forms
teddyjingles - well the last part of my fees were just paid through a Appalachian grant...so should i get a letter then
cara - You should set your appointment now so you can have the date and time you want
Tina - Good one, Ispy!
Donna - I set my date for June fourth
Kibe - How difficult is the whole process??? If some of you don't mind answering.... I am curious if it is something I could handle.
teddyjingles - ditto on the mental health center...might should have done that FIRST....time for a commitment facility now
Jana - I got mine about two weeks after they received all the forms
Donna - Kibe, you can download the instructions and read it even if you aren't working on it currently
cara - not difficult just very!!! time consuming
teddyjingles - well i can't fairly answer as I am still in beginnig stage but more complex than i originally thought
Jana - It's very time consuming
gail - I don't think it is so difficult, its just that there is not example to go by so you second guess your entries every time you write one
Tina - Kibe, to me, it's as difficult as you make it. I took one part at a time. I invest about an hour a night, every night. It can't help but make you a better teacher for going through it.
teddyjingles - who has taken assessment center already...tell us what it's like please
Donna - Do you all know about NBRIC? You can check online to find out if they have your forms and what date they sent items to you.
stenz - I don't think I understand your question? Rosy
Sonja - The Patchwork of History---stereotyping groups in America-----pick 4 groups with 6 students have them each experience 4 stereo groups==hillbillies...i am from ky dont get excited...........basically set up stations for real life connections... having students create surveys and other artifacts.....
teddyjingles - yeah i just found out the part to check all that
cara - Emotinally handicapped 2-3
Tina - what grade level, sonja?
Kibe - I am only subbing right now... is it possible for me to complete the process without having my own class?
gail - what is NBRIC
Donna - anyone else working on EA/Math
Sonja - Going to have one student go to signing class
Kibe - How long does the process take in general?
Sonja - 6th
teddyjingles - sonja, wht do you mean Patchwork of history...what is your cert. area
gail - Hi Suz
Donna - I would allow six months to do it well
Tina - Kibe--check the requirements on the NB site.
Sonja - ea ss/history
stenz - NBRIC is the National Boards site that answers questions for you.
Donna - They even have a page of FAQ's
Kibe - www.nbric.com??? is that where I would check?
Suz - If you're thinking about the process, go to NBRIC and you can download the portfolio instructions.
Donna - www.nbpts.org
Tina - I think as long as you're a certified teacher, you are ok. You will have to have a class to do your videos and stuff with, though. But double check.
teddyjingles - oh, ok....i thought this site was just exceptional needs area....your idea sounded great but didn't fit in with what ex needs wanted...
Sonja - Have students as a final product create quillt piece
Kibe - Thank you so much.... didn't mean to interrupt those who are already in the process....
teddyjingles - sonja, where in ky are you from
stenz - My state hasn't paid my retake fee - so I have not received any dates from the NB for the AC testing - I wondered if anyone out there knows when Mild/Mod Ex Needs group is testing?
Sonja - u will have to borrow a class
Donna - glad to help, kibe
Tina - No problem, Kibe. That's what we're all here for.
Sonja - Menifee and u?
Donna - it's scary and a huge decision, but once you make it, you'll know you did the right thing
Suz - its an awesome process!
Donna - It is hard work, but worth it
teddyjingles - stenzz, would dates be in our books
Tina - I like it, Sonja. I'm exceptional needs, so what exactly is your entry asking for?
Sonja - U take a look at your soul and beyond that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
stenz - It should be in some of the paperwork - If I remember correctly
Donna - have a nice night.....I'm hitting the hay......meeting with my mentor in the morning
ispy - yes my soul has been bared a few times in the past few months
Suz - All those videos!
Tina - Good luck, Donna!
Sonja - Promoting social understanding small group how much more social can get
Tina - That sounds VERY appropriate. Do you often do things like that? Will the students be comfortable with it?
Jana - Sonja- I like your idea (and the quilt)
ispy - good nite donna
Lela - For Social understanding, could you focus on hygeine? Especially if you have a child with very poor hygeine?
Sonja - When I got my letter saying i hadnt made it i just sat down and cried...................Thanks so much my friends If u can get a ment9or
ispy - i think that would be good......
stenz - How is that impacting the student's learning
Sonja - get a mentor if u can
ispy - them go thru the process of getting up in the morning and the things they need to do b4 they come to school
Jana - hygiene is a good topic for social skills
Tina - Hygiene is an important part of social, because it affects the way a child interacts and other children interact with him.
stenz - Sounds good ispy
Lela - I have one child that my heart goes out to; he is soooo needy in this area.
Tina - Lela, are you exceptional needs?
Lela - yea
ispy - promote the idea of cleanliness as part of being a friend, job requirments etc
ispy - wow, what a great idea lela
Lela - Any ideas for a video?
teddyjingles - the only info i foudn for testing was if my date ws Jan31, tthen test is between Jan1 and June30
ispy - hmmmmmm........short of going to the kids house in his bathroom in the a.m........i dont know
Lela - ispy, I like your idea about the vocational aspect.
stenz - THanks teddyjingles for looking it up - I appreciate it
Tina - You could video a specific lesson (are you doing this in a small group) where you address a certain part of hygiene, such as taking a bath, why it's important, how it affects others when you DON'T take a bath, etc... what age level?
Jana - is this a child who does not have skills to keep clean or he doen't have access to needed stuff
ispy - your video could start out like a commercial.....walking up to the kids house and ringing the doorbell at 5am......
teddyjingles - i don't know...i ordered the skillstreaming books that everyone has raved about and trying some of those lessons....excellent ideas for social skills
Tina - Ispy, I love your sense of humor!
ispy - the parents open the door and get the little critter outta bed.......
ispy - you run the bath and dunk him in and out a couple of times......
ispy - ok ok maybe thats a bit extreme
Sonja - teddyjingles did u get an email about funding for paying for certification
Tina - If there's a bathroom in the school with a tub, you could have the lesson in there.
ispy - but you get the idea
stenz - LOL LOL LOL
Lela - Yes, I could be the Fairy of Good Hygeine and carry a toothbrush instead of a wand!
Tina - I don't know...just ideas....there are TONS of things to do with hygiene
ispy - or a back scrub brush
teddyjingles - no i went to nbric site and went in under my usernamena nd you can check status of forms. payment etc
Tina - That's a good one!
ispy - hmmmmm....the possiblities are endless with this one.....
stenz - Don't forget to get him out to the community
ispy - lela....how old are your children?
Tina - I'll send my son up to do the video with you. He was "toilet paper man" for Halloween....(I don't know---he was 16!)
Lela - I have one who is ten, most are twelve and three are 14.
Tina - (You know how 16 year olds are!)
Suz - what ever you do (about the hygeine lesson) you gotta make them feel like it was their idea. Not all families have middle class values.
Sonja - teddy pull ur rubrics off of kde website good exemplars
Tina - Good point, Suz.
Lela - Suz, you are right!
Tina - Being clean is not important to all kids.
teddyjingles - what website for rubrics???
Tina - or families
ispy - could you possibly do a classroom setting where you have different hygiene items, soap , deo, aftershave, toothbrush .........
stenz - THey eat a pound of dirt a day my mom used ta say
Sonja - ky dept of ed
Lela - This poor child is covered with warts. I hope that If I teach him how to clean himself, they'll go away.
Suz - Not necessairly (?) to the students, but sometimes they just don't have a good role model to follow at home.
Sonja - www.wizzlewolf.com,
Tina - Oh....that breaks my heart.
teddyjingles - once i get to ky ed site....what do i look under
ispy - and then the children learn what each item is and its importance in their everyday life
teddyjingles - ok, i see now
ispy - yes that is sad lela.....
teddyjingles - sonja where in ky did you say u were from
Sonja - menifee
teddyjingles - what is that close to
Sonja - eastern portion u see why i can do the hillbilly thing
ispy - unfortunately it is true that cleanliness is not high on some peoples list, but it is an area that we as educators should be assisting
Suz - absolutely!
Sonja - released poprtfolio items
ispy - not saying or doing anything condones it
Sonja - mount sterling 25 mi east
teddyjingles - well as i said earlier, i'm souther wv and sort of partial to hillbillies LOL
Lela - I wish that I had a washing machine and dryer at school. I would teach them how to wash clothes.
ispy - i agree with Suz....not enough role models for children....in many areas of their lives
ispy - i am in TN and a hillbilly too
Sonja - do u have a home ec room
teddyjingles - i find hygiene difficult in cases where the families don't have access to wahsers ect for clothes...lack of facilities makes it rough
ispy - oh lela that would be a good one too
Suz - Field trip!
Lela - This community has a " washa teria" if they don't own their own machines.
teddyjingles - if you have home ec or sometimes some sports teams have washroom facilities
ispy - strip them all down in the laundromat
Sonja - Do u see when I say hillbillies what happens!!
Lela - I would looove to take them on the field, but because of several students with behavior concerns, my principal won't let me.
ispy - a whole classroom of little kids standing there in their drawers!
teddyjingles - i've had a student who's had to miss school because mom didn't have money or car to get to laundromat and get clothes clean
Suz - I miss hillbillies!
cara - there is your link to community get something going to bring attention to the problem and see if yiu can get big corporations to donate
ispy - if its cold they will have on their red long johns with the little flap in the back
teddyjingles - most behavior students are the best ones on a field trip because they are no longer told to sit at desk , etc...excited to be out
stenz - Ispy there you go again LOLLOL
Lela - Excellent Cara!
ispy - i try
Sonja - My class go so mad about abc wanting to do a hillbillies coming to beverly hills .
ispy - call maytag........that guy doesnt have anything to do anyway
ispy - he could bring over a few washers and dryers
ispy - wow what a video that would be!
Lela - I realize that. But one of mine has ran away from school several times in his past (not with me) and my principal is afraid he'll run.
Suz - or maybe donate a few hundred to purchase one for the school site.
stenz - Hey - Maybe the kids could write letter to the Maytag repair man to send in a used one!!!
ispy - hey there you go!
Lela - Oh! The Maytag idea is wonderfu;! another community contact!
ispy - dear mr maytag......
ispy - we stink....send a washer now
teddyjingles - letter to maytag would be a good communication entry
cara - it would be a wonderful opoportunity to work as a cooperative group for the good of all involved
stenz - We got some good brainstorming going on Ispy!!!!
Sonja - Article in Lexington herald leader.................read to students ......how about using scruboard.............
ispy - besides, my teacher will get an A on her project if you come thru for us
Lela - Y'll, my kids are Louisiana river rats! Some even eat coon meat!
Suz - better to send the letter to a lawyer group...they have money and want to show that they are team players.
teddyjingles - well that's an eyeopener
ispy - ok your kids could write letters to PETA too
Tina - Lowe's and Home Depot will usually donate stuff like that........
stenz - You know what this idea of letter writing is not bad - You might get some donators
teddyjingles - well let's not leave out grant opportunites...
Tina - Interesting class, Lela!
ispy - hmmmmmmm.........dont say i didnt tell you so....
ispy - yes but corporate free is better than school board free
Tina - Especially if the kids write it up, or at least sign it.
cara - also is you had permission kids could make a video expaining the need
stenz - You might write to cleaners that my want to donate dryer/washer to the school
Lela - One of my kid's uncles owns a restaurant that he calls "Road Kill" restaurant!!! This is the mentality of what I'm dealing with!
Tina - And then you send a thank you picture of all the kids in their drawers standing around the new washer!
ispy - the Red drawers with the little flap on back
Lela - I could see this really happening!
ispy - oh my lela
Suz - catch of the day?
stenz - LOL LOL LOL
Tina - they can even be eating coon meat!
ispy - kill of the day
Lela - Alligator!
Tina - while waiting for the clothes to finish
Suz - or is that smash of the day?
ispy - and then.........
teddyjingles - don't forget the raccoon hats...
Sonja - coon meat isnt bad
ispy - of the kids could pull his coon skin hat out of the washer
Tina - Perfect, Teddy!
ispy - oh teddy you got me
stenz - You can sell raccoon hats and make money for the detergent
Suz - I think that coon skins shrink when you wash it...
Lela - I haven't tried coon, but szechaun alligator is delicious!
ispy - and then as a nother project the kids could raise coons for thanksgiving.......
teddyjingles - well if it was good enough for Davy Crocket and Daniel Boone, why wouldn't it work....
Tina - ok, Lela...you've been in Louisiana too long!
Lela - You ar ekilling me ispy!
stenz - I love all this comic relief : ')
cara - maybe you all should go to hollywood to be comedians instead of working on your NB - attitude is everything
Sonja - u have to skin and stretch out on board daniel wore a felt hat
Tina - Do they serve it in your cafeteria?
Suz - well...if you can't cry anymore....
teddyjingles - well tell that to the tv producers! lol
Lela - I would love to travel. No, nothing like this is ever served in the cafeteria.
Suz - my assessment is in less than a month!
ispy - if its a maytag......and they washed a coon skin hat......and it didnt shrink.........maybe maytag would want to do a commercial showing the high quality of their washers and then you would get royalties from the commercial and then you wouldnt have to worry about being NBCT
Tina - This is such a welcome break!
stenz - YEAH !!!!!!!
Tina - There you go....you've got it made, Lela
ispy - and then you could share with us too
Lela - I would probably be able to retire early!
Lela - We could all go on a trip!
Suz - we had something a little like it....but it had barbacue sauce on it...
ispy - well i figure my relationship is in the toliet so i may as well have a little fun in here........
teddyjingles - stenz, what cert are you
Lela - There is a gorgeous French guy at my school I could hook you up with.
ispy - hmmmmmm......
stenz - Exceptional Needs Mild/Mod
ispy - welli am hoping that after this whole process we can put our lives back together
Tina - Does he eat coon meat? Ispy may want to try it!
teddyjingles - what did you use for communication and social entries....how were the scores?
Tina - I gotta go, guys. Thanks for the laughs. Good night!
Sonja - signing class hearing impaired/spanish culture/disabled
ispy - hmmmmmm......i dont think the french cook with coon
teddyjingles - nite tina
Lela - There is a gorgeous French guy at my school I could hook you up with.I'd better go! it's getting time to put my little one to bed. See y'all next week!
stenz - I taught a boy with tourettes and autistic tendencies to play Scrabble with a peer - he had never done this before
Sonja - what do uthink about these being the 4 areas
teddyjingles - was that your social?
Suz - I have a boy with tourettes in my orchestra...he plays the cello.
ispy - wow thats great
stenz - Yes social got a 3.5
teddyjingles - wow that's good...how was communciation..that is my hardest so far....but i haven't got too far yet either
stenz - My video of this student was fun -
ispy - i bet it was.......
ispy - the children are fun anyway
stenz - I taught reading strategies for independent reading and score a 2.6
teddyjingles - i have no idea where to begin with assessment question tool? entry 1....any suggestions
ispy - well i hear the timer on the oven..........my 7 layer coon lassagna is ready
ispy - time for me to go ........
ispy - talk to yo uall next week
Suz - now I'm jealous, ispy...
teddyjingles - by ispy
Sonja - what are u doing again teddy
ispy - write down your coon receipes
ispy - well come on over....its just me and the dog right now anyway......
teddyjingles - exceptional needs, mild moder disab.
Suz - okey dokey
stenz - When assessing for reading (example) pick one area to remediate and collect as much data to clearly understand what the deficit area is in
teddyjingles - and i just got a new class schedule this week....lovely...
Suz - bye ispy
ispy - bring a big glass of water to wash this stuff down
ispy - nite all
Suz - hang in there!
stenz - Nite - Ispy
ispy - thanks
teddyjingles - do i have to make up assessment tool or can i use one already available
Suz - I gotta go too. My family is snoring all around me.
stenz - Teddy- try to focus on one area is it's literacy - don't make it complicated
Sonja - look at a spec ed test and modify to meet ur own needs
stenz - I used one available - informal and formal can be used anything that collects data
Sonja - i would do both
Sonja - also makes graphs of pre and post situatons
stenz - Goodnight everyone - it's been fun
teddyjingles - well i know we used a lot informal data collection with our autism training and alternate testing...however, i still don't seem to some up with something I think is appropriate for this...so i thought i might do someithing with math or reading for assessment and who know with the commun enty
teddyjingles - letter writing was one though but i dont' think it would show up well on video...maybe using word perfect or something for comunication?
Sonja - go to special ed chatboard and make a post
teddyjingles - well looks like everyone's gone but us sonja
teddyjingles - is this your first time on here...it is mine...
teddyjingles - i prob will do that...i've been reading theirs...just haven't posted much
Sonja - well we hilbillies have staying power I usually chat on tnet
teddyjingles - is this tnet?
Sonja - chat room for special meetings
Sonja - yes this part of tnet
teddyjingles - i really like the quilt idea you're doing....
teddyjingles - our fifth grade class is doing one for part of CEDAR grant...their quilt is on coal
Sonja - my father is a quilter. This is where i came up with idea
teddyjingles - is this your first year trying for NBC
Sonja - father played a big influence in my teaching...he has come into my room and the kids have quilted with him
teddyjingles - when is your portfolio due
Sonja - retake ccandidate
teddyjingles - i think that is great....i love for kids to see the arts and crafts that are being lost in a big way with moderization
Sonja - only retaking one part this time...........2001-2002
teddyjingles - so which entry are you redoing?
Sonja - promoting social understanding enrtry 3
Sonja - i am not a quitter.
teddyjingles - what was assessment center like...overlook typing tonie. my cat is trying to help
Sonja - just study standards and be familiar with education lingo
teddyjingles - well i would love to pass first time through but i am finding that this first year is a lot of wading through for me...so i won't be totally disappointed if i dont
teddyjingles - by standards, do you mean NBC standards or our state content standards
teddyjingles - i hope i'm not asking too many questions but this seems like a perft oppor
Sonja - it is a broad journey.............nbc standards...........be familiar with spec ed legislation andfamous cases
Sonja - no it is ok... It helps to ask and ask ..Hi judy and grace
teddyjingles - i wish nbc would give more specific ideas or pointers to help us know if we're even in the right ball parkl
teddyjingles - how do you change type colors
Sonja - good luck.....go to www.gse.uci.edu./nbc/portfoliohtml
Sonja - This is a site where excerpts from teachers in all areas have shared.,.good site...
Sonja - God bless u ,teddy...gotta go
